Mrs Turton, Intervention Coordinator: B ir m ingh am City Univer sity offer a Summer School for Year 10 students who are curious about higher education. Your Future Your Choice gives students an opportunity to find out what it is like to study at university, and in particular a research-led institution like Birmingham. We are pleased to report that Abigail Boden (10WDW), Kourtnei Heathcock (10ARE), Kelsey Macklin (10THO) and Lucianna Songole (10WDW) have been offered places in July. Look out for reports in INsight following the event.

Miss Anslow, SENCO: A huge congratulations to former Holly Hall teacher, Miss Katie Yorke (now Smith), who was this week announced as the winner of Lorraine's Top Tales competition on ITV! Back in October, Miss Yorke was diagnosed with a Brain tumour. Whilst off work and recovering she entered a competition on the Lorraine Kelly show on ITV to write a children's short story. Out of three thousand entries Miss Yorke was selected to go through to the final three, a tremendous accomplishment in itself! On Thursday 12th May, Miss Yorke was crowned the winner of the book competition with her entry The Pumpkin Project, live on television. As a result of this, the book will be published in October for people to buy. You can watch the moment when Miss Yorke received the fantastic news on the ITV website - http://www.itv.com/ lorraine/hot-topics/our-top-tales-winner-revealed Everyone at Holly Hall sends their congratulations to Miss Yorke on this fantastic achievement and wishes her all the best in her recovery!

Miss Harrison, Coordinator of English: This weeks Holly Hall Reads Star is Mr Townley. He said “I have always been interested in space and

astronomy and enjoy reading about it to keep up with the most up to date, cutting edge news and science. This is especially important as I am a regular writer for the BBC Sky at Night magazine; with its 24,000 subscribers, 8,000 monthly news stand sales and 25,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. With so many people reading what I write it is important that I get my facts right and the only way I can do this is to read. My next article is in July’s issue of the magazine which is due out at the end of the month.” Remember, all entries for Holly Hall Reads will be entered into a prize draw. Send your photo to Miss Harrison to be in with a chance of winning.

Mrs Lee, Director of Key Stage 4: On Wednesday lunchtime Lynn Howells, School Health Advisor and two colleagues ran an information session on testicular and breast cancer. Leaflets were distributed and the Health Care team gave invaluable advice to our students. The students who attended were very mature and asked some great questions. Health awareness is of utmost importance to us at Holly Hall. If students require any further information regarding cancer detection or any other health related matter, they can speak to Lynn Howells. Grace Devere (7ONE): “My friends and I went to the session to find out more about cancer. There were objects that resembled breasts and testicles and we had to feel them to see if we could detect any lumps. Lynn gave us leaflets and spoke to us about how and when it is best to check yourself. We found out that anyone, at any age can develop these sort of cancers but if they are found early they can be treated. We now feel more re-assured about cancer as we know so much more about it.”

Mrs Lee, Director of Key Stage 4: Year 8 and 10 students recently took part in the 'Children's and Young People's Health and Well Being Survey'. Students were asked ninety-four questions about their health and well being. The information provided is invaluable in deciding on themes for enrichment days, tutorial work and also topics to be covered during the next few weeks in PSHE lessons. Mrs Lee would like to draw your attention to some of the answers given by our students: 15% of students said they did not eat lunch on the day before the survey took place. Students are welcome to bring a packed lunch with them or can eat in Scotty G's where a full selection of hot and cold food and snacks are available. 9% of students said they are not able to drink water during lesson time. Drinking water during the school day is encouraged and it is crucial for our students to eat and stay hydrated to maintain their concentration levels during afternoon lessons. Students must ensure that they bring a suitable water bottle to school, these can be refilled at drinks fountains before school starts and during break and lunchtime. Look out for more findings from the survey in future editions of INsight.

You may recall that five Holly Hall students took part in the Think First Police Programme during the Easter holidays (featured in INsight 15 th April). Think First is a five day interactive programme for 13 to 17 year olds looking at the consequences of certain behaviours that affect young people and enables them to learn key life skills. Activities include off site visits and various community safety themed workshops. PC Paul Davies has informed us that the programme is running again during the Summer holidays commencing 22nd August and will run for 5 days. The programme would be particularly beneficial to students who are interested in public services. If you would like to know more, why not speak to one of the students who took part. If you would like to take part please speak to your Intervention Coordinator in the first instance.

Have you lost something? If so, come to the Resources Office during lunch or break time and see if it has been handed in.

Mr Townley, Leader of Arts & Design: The theme for this weeks assemblies was STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and maths. Students learnt how STEM is all about looking to the future, not being static and coming up with new ideas that end up being the inventions of tomorrow. Students learnt about things that were invented by NASA in their space programme which are now common place in today’s society. At the time people said that it was a 'waste of money' and 'nobody would need them', but now, we all know that things like computer micro chips, battery powered tools and smoke alarms are part of everyday life. Sometimes there are things that seem pointless at the time, but it is only when you look back at them you realise the significance and importance of them!
