We are pleased to announce that Mr Landers has been appointed Principal of Holly Hall Academy. Mr Landers has been interim Principal since January. One of his key tasks will be implementing the DAT's new strategic plan, which was released this week. He said: “I am delighted to be taking up the reins at Holly Hall. I truly believe this is an exciting time for the Academy and for the trust as a whole. I am fully committed to delivering all of the strategic priorities in our new plan, as I believe the young people of Dudley deserve the very best from their education, which I will work tirelessly with my staff to give them.” DAT chief executive Jo Higgins, said “Mr Landers would provide 'the energetic and committed leadership the Academy needs to drive through a substantial improvement programme for the future’. He knows the area and its students well and, as an outstanding classroom teacher, he will be able to bring a wealth of experience to his new role.”

Mrs Turton, AIG Career & Aspiration Advisor: This week we saw the installation of a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) at the Academy. This piece of equipment is used when someone is in cardiac arrest. The device gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall. Should you suspect that someone has had a cardiac arrest. Here’s what you should do … DIAL 999 START CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) FIND OUT IF THERE IS A DEFIBRILLATOR NEARBY For more information about cardiac arrest, please visit: https://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/conditions/cardiac-arrest Many thanks to intu Merry Hill who funded the PAD and intu representatives Naomi Campbell and Shaun Stokes for organising the installation.

ADVANCE NOTICE The Academy closes for half term on Friday 25th May. We re-open on Monday 4th June 2018.

Health Survey Worries about school? In our survey we found that 12% of students have missed school at some point due to worries about school. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that any problems you are worried about can be discussed with a member of staff. Staff in Base 34 are available to discuss and help you with any problems you may have. You can also talk to your form tutor or any other member of staff.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

Mrs Turton, AIG Career & Aspiration Advisor: We would like to express our thanks to Naomi Campbell from intu Merry Hill who visited the Academy to deliver careers sessions to all of our Year 7 students. In these sessions students looked at the importance of body language and eye contact. She spoke about how to conduct themselves during interviews and what employers look for when recruiting staff. Students were surprised to learn about all the varied job roles that are within the Merry Hill Centre from HR to Cleaning staff .

Students took part in a listening skills exercise and won £20 Vouchers. Musi Masawi said: “Naomi came to talk to us about careers and covered topics such as interviews. She gave us a task to carry out. We had to remember as many items as possible from a list. The prize was a £20 gift voucher. I had fun and I won a £40 gift card by being bold and going for the extra money.” Owais Iqbal, Arsild Leka, Kamil Paruszewski and Victoria Thomas also won gift vouchers. Year 9 student Ashley Colley took part in a 5k run recently. The aim was to raise money for The National Autistic Society who provide information, support, pioneering services, and campaign for a better world for autistic people. Here’s what she said about the race: “The race was really fun. We did a warm up first and then set off. Throughout the race there were obstacles which were quite easy. The last one was very scary! I am so happy that my family and friends did it.” If you would like to know more about their work visit www.autism.org.uk/.

Mr Townley, Assistant Principal and Amateur Astronomer: With these warm spring nights we have at the moment did you know it is possible to easily see both the planets Venus and Jupiter in the twilight sky? Look in the direction of the sunset just after the sun goes down and hanging in the western sky is the planet Venus - it's easy to see as it is the brightest object in the sky! Venus is sometimes called Earths twin as it is a similar size. However, it has a thick atmosphere of Sulphuric acid clouds and winds that blow at over 200 miles per hour making the planet very inhospitable. If you turn to the southern part of the sky as it goes dark you can see the planet Jupiter shining brightly. Unlike Venus the planet Jupiter is composed of gas instead of rock. Jupiter is 2.5 times larger than all the rest of the planets in the Solar System combined and its diameter is 11 times larger than Earth. In other words, you could put 11 Earths side-by-side to match the diameter of Jupiter. The planets are so far away that it takes 6 minutes for the light to come from Venus to Earth, and 43 minutes for the light to come from Jupiter to Earth.

Can we please remind parents and carers to be considerate when dropping off or collecting their children from the Academy. We have had reports of residents access to their property being blocked and pedestrians being forced to walk on the road due to vehicles being parked on the pavement. Please encourage your child to walk when possible but if you do have to bring them, consider avoiding the area immediately outside the Academy.

Students who are fasting will be allowed to use S10 (upstairs in the Sports Hall) during lunchtime.
