You may recall reading about our Brilliant Club in previous editions of INsight. Students took part in a scholars programme where they completed an assignment and were marked ‘degree style’. Ten students completed the course with very promising results. On Wednesday The Brilliant Club took part in their graduation ceremony at Holly Hall. Refreshments and even a red carpet were provided. Students wore graduation gowns whilst being presented with their certificates. Amman Ahmed (Year 10) said “The Graduation was an amazing way to celebrate our wonderful achievements and scores! I loved the feeling whilst walking on the red carpet!” Mrs Milovsorov provided the refreshments for the ceremony. She said A huge thank you to Sharntae Davies, Tasharna Mighty and Connor Currie (pictured left) for helping with the production of afternoon tea for forty people. This included sun-dried tomato bread, summer chicken rolls, carrot cake, swiss roll and meringue nests. These students worked hard after school to create the feast. Definitely chefs in the making!

During half-term we are running revision sessions to help our Year 11 students with their final examinations. Letters detailing these sessions have been posted home to parents and students have received their own copy.

It is widely publicised that the government guidelines are that we should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Unfortunately, only 15% of our students report to eating 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Fruit and vegetables play a vital role in our diets which include boosting our immunity, reducing obesity and reducing constipation. Fruit is on sale in Scotty G’s during break and lunch times.

Mr Jabore, Science Teacher: On Wednesday members of the Holly Hall STEM club paid a visit to their mentors, Harco Engineering and toured the workshop. Ryan Young from Harco has been instrumental in assisting the team in their quest to design and build Holly Hall’s entry for this year’s competition. The Team also met with Martyn Hughes, the director of Harco Engineering and a former Holly Hall student. Martyn’s wife Karen has been a regular visitor to Holly Hall on our Enrichment Days. She has taken part in our Dragon’s Den activities. The team are preparing to present their idea in July to the competition organisers, The Express & Star newspaper and Dudley College, and an audience that includes students from twenty-five other schools. Algesa Alistafa: “I thought that it was very interesting and engaging. I enjoyed learning more about the machines that are used in engineering. I recommend a visit for students who are interested in engineering. You will learn a lot!”

The Team consisting of Halima Asha, Humera Imran, Blessing Cubes, Algesa Alistafa and Alex Oleschuk are seen pictured with Ryan Young at Harco Engineering’s Brierley Hill base.

A report by Year 10 student Amman Ahmed: On Friday 18th May we celebrated the Royal wedding which took place on Saturday 19th May. We held a raffle and sold samosas to raise money for the Diana Award Trust. The samosas proved very popular ! Congratulations to Nathan Cooper-Davis (Pictured) who was the winner of the raffle prize. The money raised will soon be sent to the charity.

A report by Year 10 student Amman Ahmed:

On Tuesday, ‘Unity X’ said goodbye to Donna Garbett who has left the Anne Frank Trust. ‘Unity X’ would like to thank Donna for all the work she has put in to our campaign and wish her the best of luck for the future. The meeting included information about a visit to Amsterdam as a reward for all our work and ‘Run For Joel 2018’. We would really like it if people could sign up for the run which will take place at Sandwell Valley on 9th September at 10.00am. Mrs Lee, Assistant Principal: During the school holidays, and in particular in hot weather, increasing numbers of children put themselves at risk of drowning. On average 40-50 children drown per year in the UK. To keep yourself safe, when you are in, on or beside water, always follow the Water Safety Code.

Spot the dangers! Water may look safe, but it can be dangerous. You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water. The dangers of outdoor water include: ! it is very cold ! there may be hidden currents ! it can be difficult to get out (steep slimy banks) ! it can be deep ! there may be hidden rubbish, e.g. shopping trolleys, broken glass ! there are no lifeguards ! it is difficult to estimate depth ! it may be polluted and make you ill

Take safety advice! Special flags and notices may warn you of danger. Know what the signs mean and do what they tell you.

REMINDER: Students who are fasting will be allowed to use S10 (upstairs in the Sports Hall) during lunchtime.

Learn about water safety signs and the flags you should look out for on the beach.

Go together! Children should always go with an adult, not by themselves. An adult can point out dangers or help if somebody gets into trouble.

If you find yourself in difficulty The average temperature of British and Irish waters is 12-15°C, cold enough to cause cold water shock. Cold water shock makes you gasp uncontrollably and breathe in water, which can quickly lead to drowning. If you fall into water, fight your instinct to swim until the cold water shock passes. Float on your back until you are able to catch your breath. Doing so may save your life.

Learn how to help! You may be able to help yourself and others if you know what to do in an emergency. If you see someone in difficulty, tell somebody, preferably a Lifeguard if there is one nearby, or go to the nearest telephone, dial 999, ask for the Police at inland water sites and the Coastguard at the beach.
