Nimra Hussain (11STO): This week saw the opening of our new shop. Members of the COFO charity team have been selling Royal British Legion merchandise at lunchtimes. These will be available until the end of next week. There are lots of items available for a contribution from as little as 10p so come along and contribute to a very worthy cause. Shortly you will be able to purchase items of stationery from the shop. Pictured: COFO members and student customers

Mr Townley, Leader of Arts & Design: You may remember our Year 10 girls whose winning design (left) got through to the national finals for the 'RU Different' programme to reduce risk taking in young people. Well now is the time to s h o w y o u r support. We need all students, staff, parents and friends of Holly Hall to cast their vote; this can be done via the Academy Twitter feed, or alternatively on the front page of the VLE. Please share this, re-tweet it and tell as many of your friends as you can, because, quite simply, the design with the most votes will be the overall winner, and we would love this to be Holly Hall.

The Travel Academy in association with Network West Midlands are running a competition for you to win an amazing prize! All you have to do is design a poster for Road Safety Week (23-29 November 2015). The top three designs will be showcased in INsight and the winning design will be displayed around the Academy. Hand your design to M i s s Haycock by Friday 20 November. Pictured are some of our students working with Travel Academy.

Wednesday 11 November is Remembrance Day. The Academy will be observing a silence at 11am and assemblies on this theme will be taking place.

Mr Sissons, Director of Learning: I would like to tell parents of an important change that is being introduced across the Academy. Starting from next week students will regularly receive feedback stickers in their class books and on their assessments when their work is marked . These stickers will not just tell students what they have done well and how they can improve but will now also importantly ask students to respond to the feedback either through writing to show that they understand the comment or by returning to their work and making improvements. Parents are also welcome to add your comments to these stickers. The Academy is introducing this change in response

to findings of new educational research that has shown that getting students to regularly read and respond to good quality feedback can improve their rate of progress by up to 8 months each year. Another change students will see is that a second sticker will be stuck on the front cover of all their class books and work folders. This is a marking for literacy and will help them to understand the codes teachers use to identify English errors in their written work. Our new Marking, Feedback and Assessment Policy will be reviewed in March. In the meantime we would be delighted to receive any feedback from parents about how this is going.

On 5 November students enjoyed a Bonfire Day themed lunch in Scotty G’s. The posh dogs and spicy veggie bean burgers were a particular hit!

Bonfire

Night celebrations happening over this weekend we urge you to take care. Fireworks are explosives which can cause serious injury. The damage that can be caused can have a lifelong impact on an individual’s health and can particularly have severe consequences for children. Wherever possible we advise that you attend an organised display but if you are celebrating at home, an adult should be responsible for bonfires and fireworks.

Congratulations to Miss Adams, Textiles Teacher whose baby boy Jack Richard was born on Saturday 24 O c t o b e r , weighing 7lb 5oz. Both mother and son are doing well.

Mr Stokes, Coordinator of Science: A group of budding Year 11 scientists visited Bishop Milner Catholic School on Monday this week for an A Level Science taster session. The lesson was enjoyed by all and they are looking forward to returning for two further sessions. Students who attended: Bethany Ireland (11STE), Alisha Jarrett (11STE), Paige Moran (11DHE), Chandler Newman (11STE), Radha Patel (11DHE), Jordan Sefton (11WES)

Mr Jabore, Director of KS3: You may remember before half term that it was a good time to see Mars, Venus and Jupiter in the morning sky, well these three planets are still putting on a great show in the dawn sky around 7am if you are up early. This Saturday morning you will find another member of our solar system joining them when a thin crescent moon complements this celestial conjunction. It is worth taking a look because this grouping of heavenly bodies won't be like this in the sky again till 2021.

Mrs Mahi-Newton, Science Teacher: If you would like Science support for homework or exam preparation. Please come along to D3 on Friday lunchtimes.

Mr Davies, Senior Science Technician: Do you read a newspaper at home? Do you read the Metro on the bus in the morning? Do you see any Science based articles or pictures? Please bring anything you find to me in the Science Department to use in a display on the Science corridor.

Mrs Milovsorov would like to remind students about the cookery ingredients they will require for week commencing 9 November 2015. Year 7 (Monday) - Pasta Salad Year 9 (Tuesday) - Fajitas Year 9 (Wednesday) - Cheesecake Page 4
