Paige Moran (10DHE): During Enrichment Day1 on Wednesday this week, the Academy was lucky to receive a visit from TV Presenter and GP, Doctor Hilary Jones. He gave out good advice particularly aimed at students with a history of allergies or asthma. Students heard an interesting account of his experience of being a doctor. He was j oined by addit ional speakers including Emma, the founder of the Charity ‘Haydn’s Wish’. Emma lost her son tragically when he suffered a severe allergic reaction. The charity aims to improve knowledge and raise awareness of the relationship between childhood asthma and allergies and has an informative website, www.haydns-wish.co.uk. The students later had the opportunity to ask questions. It was a great experience for both students and staff.

Friday 26 September was the ’World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, an annual event held to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The student led leadership team, COFO hosted our coffee morning in the hall, where they sold cup cakes made by the ’Foodies’ catering team and their friends. The cakes were delicious and proved very popular. The students raised a super £57.50 which will be sent to the charity. Page 3

At the end of the Summer term a group of students visited Krakow in Poland. INsight has been featuring a day by day diary. Day 3 was written by Lauren Johal (11HAL). Day Three - “We visited Auschwitz which was a harrowing and emotional experience. Images that will always remain with us are the exhibitions of personal belongings that were kept. We saw the gas chambers that were disguised as shower rooms and were burnt by the Nazis just before the camp was liberated, and a memorial to commemorate all of the innocent people that suffered and died there. Over 700 Jews were housed into one hut with just wooden slats for beds. Later that day we dined at a traditional Jewish restaurant where we ate Jewish dumplings and was entertained by a Klezmer band. Our final day at Poland had been an eye opener and one that we will never forget.”

From Monday 6 to Friday 10 October, the Academy will close at 2.20pm each day for staff Performance Management reviews.
