Mr Lloyd went back into hospital on Wednesday 1st May 2013 for a second operation to reverse the temporary ileostomy which he has had since his first operation in November last year. His consultant has told him to anticipate having to take a further three months off work in order to recover which may mean that Mr Lloyd will not be back in the Academy until September 2013. Mr Lloyd told INsight “I know I’ve got to be sensible and take the consultant’s advice but I hope I may be able to start back part-time in July, we will have to wait and see how it goes. I would like to wish all of our students good luck in their examinations. Revise hard and try to be the best you can be. I’m particularly sad that I will miss Year 11 leaving and their Prom and I would like to wish all Year 11 students every success in their future careers.”

Congratulations to Courtney Gallier (8CHA), Nation’s puzzle. Her name was drawn from all the correct entries received.

the winner of Mr

The answer was: John answered ten questions correctly. Courtney is pictured with her prize of a £10 W H Smiths gift voucher. Have you seen Mr Nation’s card trick on the home page of the VLE? There is a mystery prize for students who can figure out how it’s done.

Mr Townley, PSHE Teacher: Year 7 students enjoyed a visit from firefighters from Brierley Hill fire station. Building on work they did in Year 6 at their primary schools, students learned about fire risks that can be found in the home and how to protect themselves and stay safe. Also covered were the risks that young people encounter on the roads, the dangers from making hoax calls and also making sure all homes have a working smoke alarm fitted. Nyasha Ndemera (7KSM) can be seen here helping to demonstrate how firefighters stay safe themselves in their full protective equipment whilst keeping us safe in the event of an emergency.

In light of the recent Measles outbreak, and despite there being no confirmed cases in Dudley at present, there will be an MMR catch-up campaign in Dudley, led by the Office of Public Health. Children aged 10 - 16 years who have not been vaccinated will be identified by the Public Health Records team and invited to attend an appointment with their GP. Parents of unvaccinated children, who may have missed their MMR vaccination, should make an appointment with their GP to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Congratulations to our Students of the Month for April 2013. They will be presented with a special badge and certificate by Mrs Malone, Acting Principal. Their commitment to their work at Holly Hall is outstanding. Our students are keen to be successful and set themselves consistently high challenges.

Mr Malone, Senior Assistant Principal: We have been asked to pass on a warning from Health authorities about the dangers of magnetic tongue studs, after reports of serious medical emergencies, including some in Dudley. The studs give the wearer the look of a tongue piercing but without a hole. If accidentally swallowed, the magnets (designed to be worn either side of the tongue) can stick together

trapping parts of the intestine and leading to perforation of the bowel. While magnetic facial studs can be bought online, children are thought to be fashioning their own tongue versions using magnetic earrings and ball bearings from toy puzzles. We are advised that if a child accidentally swallows one or more of these balls, they should seek medical advice immediately.

Enrichment Day5 took place on Thursday 25th April 2013. Students enjoyed an action packed day. Year 7 students had a variety of experience based around a ‘Faith in the Community’ theme. They did bhangra dancing, hand painting, dressing up and food tasting. In the afternoon they visited two local churches.

Year 9 2D and 3D design groups worked closely with Dudley Council Air Quality Improvement Team on learning about emissions from different types of vehicles petrol, diesel and electric. Students looked at practical ways in which drivers can help to reduce their emissions, save money and in the process improve the environment. The 2D design group then used a specification provided by the air quality team to design signs that Dudley Council will produce and site around the Academy grounds to encourage parents to turn off their engine when waiting to pick up students at the end of the day. The remainder of Year 9 had a ‘Taste of Key Stage 4’ to help them decide what subjects to choose in Year 10 .

Year 8 students developed their investigative skills in three activities. They worked in teams to design and build a lighthouse using limited resources. Students also practised some forensic science techniques to solve a crime. The final activity was to test urine (imitation) samples to detect diabetes.

Year 8 also saw Mr Jabore demonstrate the principles of ‘Boyle’s Law’ with his carrot cannon. It states that the pressure of a gas in a container is i n v e r s e l y proportional to the volume. The energy stored in the tube is approximately 10 joules, which has the potential to deliver a projectile at 120 mph!! Year 10 spent their day in the English department. With only three weeks left until their English examination, this day was invaluable. All students took part in speaking and listening assessments and reading and writing preparation. The exam is Tuesday 4th June 2013. Keep working hard Year 10! A group of Year 11 students had a ’leavers trip’ to Alton Towers. A super day was had by all. Amy Walters (11HOW) - “This was a great trip. I had a break from studying and gained lots of memories to take with me.” Nathanael Dainty-Share (11BRS) - “This was a brilliant trip! It wasn’t very busy so I got on all the rides at least three times. I had great fun.” Alisha Wajid (11DHE) - “A fantastic leaving trip. The highlight of the day was seeing Mr Webster’s and Mrs Turton’s face on the ride ‘Thirteen’!” Page 3
