The Blue Streak is published three times per year by the GSC Alumni Services Staff. Tisha Bruemmer, Editor, Alumni Advancement Coordinator Mary Jo Kathman, Dean of Student/Alumni Services Maureen Coz, Alumni Relations Coordinator Clare Allaire, Student/Alumni Secretary

By profession, Jacqueline Evans is a Secretary in TriHealth Library Services. She also produces historical displays for the college. But ask her what she considers her true calling and her answer is, “To be a Poet.”

Outside The College Doors

Why do you write poetry? I write poetry to honor the gift that has been bestowed upon me. Writing offers me a peace and a connection to the words that have been instilled in me. Before I write, I pray, and ask my Heavenly Father to give me the words and let them be a blessing.

How long have you been writing poetry? For about three years. I began writing when a dear friend of mine died from cancer. The poem is entitled Forever Friend. It was my tribute to her and was a true release as I remembered the times I shared with her. She was an awesome mentor and I truly miss her.

Can you share one of your poems with us? Certainly. I wrote After The Rain simply as I envisioned and I was in awe of the hues of a color palette that cannot be duplicated.

After the Rain God’s rainbow often appears Gaze in the beauty of its appeal Reflect upon colors of magnificence This joy is Heaven sent Accept its importance Forbade as a nuisance Life instilled in ambiance For the rainbow will take a bow Never miss its grandeur through the clouds -Jacqueline Evans 2012

Which poet is your favorite and why? My favorite poet is Maya Angelou for her extraordinary insight; her words seem to envelope you as you read them.

Would you like to become a published poet? I believe through God’s Grace and Mercy it will happen in His time.

What inspires you when you are writing? I am inspired by what I envision, see, and experience. My inspiration comes from scriptures, books, TV, movies, people and emotion. For example I was just watching my granddaughter (Maleah, two years old) and grandson (Joshua, seven years old). As she was combing his hair, she was standing on my bed behind him and he was sitting. So this was the beginning of a poem I call Siblings.

Tell us your connection to the Martin Luther King program here at the Hospital. For the last three years, I have been truly honored to read a piece of my poetry aloud at the hospital’s Martin Luther King program. This opportunity has taken me out of my comfort zone, as I’m generally a very shy person. For the past two years I have written the poems just a few days before the program. This is stressful but it is how it was meant to be. In January 2015 my inspiration came from a picture of Martin Luther King that is in our Clifton Lobby.

What is your overall goal related to your poetry? My goal is to be remembered, and have my poetry touch, inspire and comfort a multitude of readers.

e g d E after women.” Though she worked days, many of her classmates had taken jobs working evenings.

urnet Woods was a favorite hangout for Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing students in the sixties. They would gather in the large park, located across the street from their dorm Victoria Hall, to lie on towels and catch the sun’s rays. Or they used the park as a cut-through on their way to local restaurants and student nightlife. But from December 1965 through December of the following year, Burnet Woods, along with most of the Clifton and Price Hill neighborhoods, became an unsettling place to venture without several friends in tow. The “Cincinnati Strangler” had become front page news. In early December 1965, the first homicide in a string of rape/ murders in Clifton/Price Hill occurred. The second followed a

Headlines tying the three crimes together escalated the terror around the city. Gun sales spiked and children were kept indoors. At GSHSN, the school was put on high alert. Sister Andrew, the Director of Nursing Education, took the threat seriously. “We were told we couldn’t go to Burnet Woods unless we were in a group of 20 or more,” remembers Terri Schumacher ‘69. “Security at the school and at the hospital was really tight.” Diane Motz ’65 had begun working at the hospital. “We were worried. It was a scary time because we knew the man was

“We had some people who worked on East 200. I remember them telling me about the woman who worked evenings there who would put on a man’s hat and long coat and would carry a cigar so she’d look like a man,” Motz said. “It was her way of feeling safer when she walked to her car.” Motz remembers when she married in June of 1966 (not long after the murder in Burnet Woods), her father drove through the park on his way to Virginia Bakery to return plastic wedding cake spacers. When he stopped his car in the park to rearrange the tipping plastic pieces, he was quickly approached by Cincinnati police checking to see why he had stopped in the park. Mary Rath was a graduate in the summer of 1966. “When I was a student, we didn’t take it very seriously. We’d go walking through the parks. But, I do remember my heart racing when we cut through Burnet Woods,” she remembers. Mary took a position in the Emergency Room at Good Samaritan Hospital after her graduation from GSHSN. “In the ER, we were constantly waiting for another victim to come in,” she said. “And when we walked to the car, I did have a guard go with me sometimes.” The killing continued through the summer and fall. The time for Halloween trick-or-treating was moved to the daytime. In October, GSHSN suffered a personal loss when one of its alumni, a 1937 graduate, became a victim of the Strangler. Her daughter also had graduated from the school in 1965. That murder spawned a massive manhunt throughout Cincinnati. But the murders continued until December, 1966, when a local taxi driver was arrested. After his incarceration, the murders ceased. He was attributed with six strangulations. The Strangler was convicted the next spring of one of the serial murders. He died in prison in 2007.

I am so grateful that the professional foundation of my career was started with my learnings from the GSHSN. I am honored to be the ’15-’16 President of the Alumni. I want all my fellow alumni to know that there are a lot of fun events planned throughout the year. These activities help raise money for scholarships, technology advancement, and educational programs. I encourage you to come and try it out for yourself. Our 2015 Homecoming was held in April. The Friday night event of socializing on a private patio at Cock and Bull is a fun time with a great atmosphere. It was wonderful to see some old friends plus say hello to some of my instructors I had in the past. This year, my classmates and I decided to bring our spouses to the Friday event. We all had a great time. The Saturday lunch was perfect timing because we had plenty of time for lunch and reunions and could still make plans that again included spouses for the evening. We also had silent auctions, gift basket chances, and split the pot games. I also want to thank everyone who donated to the 2015 Annual Fund. We ended the campaign with more than $110,000 in donations that will be used for student and graduate scholarships. Last, I want to be sure everyone knows that President Morris Cohen announced his retirement this coming year. I want to personally thank him for years of support and leadership for the college and the alumni.
