Outside The College Doors When the bridesmaid forgot to get her dress hemmed, GSC Assoc. Professor Sharon Pittard got down on her hands and knees just before the wedding ceremony started and used Velcro to put in a hem. It’s just one of many “fixes” she’s come up with while serving as a volunteer wedding planner for her family and friends. Sharon teaches NUR 201 (Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and MedicalSurgical Nursing). She has been at the College for 26 years.

How long have you been a wedding planner and how did you get into it?

Any “I can’t believe they did that” stories?

I have been a wedding planner for fifteen years. My first experience as a wedding planner began when I assisted my sister in-law with her wedding at my home. She had a small wedding. The largest wedding has been for 200 people.

At one wedding, the baker dropped the first layer of the cake and left without telling the bride and groom or me what had happened. Somehow, she thought that no one would notice!!! The bride was obviously upset when she arrived at the reception and noticed the cake was missing a tier. She received a free wedding cake, however, when she had another reception out of town.

Tell us about some of the unexpected problems you’ve solved at weddings. I have had several. In one wedding, my niece was a bridesmaid. She also was breastfeeding a three- month old baby and had not recently tried on her dress prior to the wedding. We were unable to zip up her dress because her breasts had grown. It was a struggle, but I ended up folding the dress into a V in the back and used her shawl to cover it. Once, I had a groomsman start to pass out because he was diabetic and he had not eaten. I was able to help him, I keep crackers and orange juice with me just in case. People don’t always eat when they’ve got pictures and a long stretch before a reception. I’ve also created an emergency wedding kit with supplies to fix all types of unexpected things that can occur.

You’ve had a few of your own panicky moments, right? Oh yes. A big one occurred at the wedding of one of my own daughters. I was required to provide all of the decorations for the venue four days before the wedding. I had them in boxes containing elaborate illustrations and directions on how to decorate the area. I was informed that the staff would decorate the hall several hours before the wedding. Unfortunately, when I went to check the venue just two hours before the wedding, the workers were still cleaning up from the previous night’s wedding and no decorations were in place. I decorated the hall myself while dressed in my own gown and with only the assistance of my niece.

Share with us your best tips for anyone planning a wedding. •

Make lists and identify who is responsible for completing the many tasks. I have developed my own checklists for the bride and groom. The couple needs to provide themselves with enough time to plan for specific, minute details. As a wedding planner, it is important to stay calm and level headed because during the final week of the wedding, everyone’s nerves are frazzled!!!! Someone needs to be in charge and that is usually the wedding planner. That person must anticipate what will happen and/or what could potentially happen and be prepared for any situation. I do not recommend being the wedding planner for your own child’s wedding (I did both of my daughters’ weddings) because it was extremely stressful for everyone involved. They both ended up having a beautiful wedding, however!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT A Path to Higher Excellence Healthcare and Higher Education industry trends are placing increasing downward pressure on hospital-based programs like GSC. The shifting landscapes are creating calls for significant and rapid change to adjust to technological advancements, a changing regulatory environment, and increased competition to prepare a differentiated workforce (Educause, 2017). The Association of Governing Boards (2017) also suggest three emerging priorities in the higher education environment. Declining Net Tuition: An examination of the average tuition price published at four-year private colleges is $32,405. A Shrinking Market: For colleges that rely solely on a campus-based delivery model, some markets are shrinking due to declining regional high school demographics. Growing Market Segments The capacity to expand enrollment also will be determined by an institution’s ability to serve diverse and growing market segments. This includes transfer students, adults seeking degree completion, and graduate students, as well as those students seeking certificates and credentials. Our bold, new strategic plan was approved in November, 2016 with a new theme and focus, Your Future in Healthcare Begins Here. Early successes at the college include:  Growth & financial health through enhanced recruitment strategies.  Student centered campus environment through focus on broadened opportunities for student engagement, identification, and intervention of vulnerable populations of students.  Approved for $8M in facility renovations to redesign and upgrade the entire campus.  Team member engagement is at an all-time high.  Expanded BSN programming and discounted tuition for TriHealth team members, industry aligned curriculum, increases in online teaching and learning, as well as future program development for Medical Assisting in the Allied Health program. As you can see, we’ve already made significant progress on multiple fronts, and the engagement of our entire college board, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of GSC has made all the difference! As we continue our celebration of our 120 Year Anniversary, we look forward to seeing you in and around campus. Look for more exciting news as we press forward and continue our path of higher excellence. It is a good time to be at GSC!

TURNING BROKEN LIVES INTO PRODUCTIVE ADULTS Miriam (Mimi) Krusling RSM ’63 has worked more than 20 years with 100+ boys at the St. John Bosco Boys’ Home in Manchester, Jamaica. It houses boys who have lived on the streets or left a broken, neglectful home. The purpose of Bosco is to give the boys love and a healthy dose of structure and discipline so they can achieve the skills they need to become productive citizens of Jamaica. In the August 2010 BlueStreak, Mimi shared the story of her work at the home. Mimi told us then that her hope and prayer was to stay healthy so she could continue to make a difference in the lives of the boys she works with each day. We recently caught up with her for an update on the Bosco Boys Home and her work with them.

E

xcept for the Zika virus that slowed her down for a week last year, 75-year old Mimi is in her own words, “still going strong” in her care for the boys. She lives at the home and helps to run its programs. Besides a general education, the home has traditionally taught the boys trades such as meat cutting/ processing, animal husbandry, catering, or farming. Bosco is the home to more than 2,000 banana and plantain trees, 500 coffee trees and many other crops. All farming is done by the boys in the crop farming program. Most of the produce is used to feed the boys at the home and supply its Catering department. Bosco also houses 6,000 chickens and 500 pigs. The pigs and chickens are part of the animal husbandry training program. The animals feed into the Butcher shop which teaches the boys all areas of meat cutting and processing. Some of the Butcher Shop meat is sold locally and the rest is used for the Catering Department. Catering is provided for conferences, weddings, birthdays and other events. In 2015, the home added an outdoor restaurant called The Falls to train some of the boys as waiters, which as Sister Mimi explains, is very different than serving in the catering environment. Two nights per week, the boys practice their waiter skills while serving food to locals who frequent the restaurant. Many of the boys who complete one of the Home’s programs develop the skills needed to pursue a trade and become self

3

sufficient. One of the Bosco waiters, Ramone was just 4 years old when he came to the Home and Mimi began to raise him. He said he considers her his mother and recently told her when the time comes and she needs care, he must take care of her because she raised him. Mimi constantly utilizes her nursing skills while caring for the boys at Bosco. Taking care of the health needs of more than 100 active boys can be difficult. But Mimi is dedicated and closely watches the health of every boy. Besides monitoring their health, such as keeping the boys on a daily vitamin regimen, she addresses their medical care. This may include taking a boy to a clinic to address a specific problem or treating it at the home. She cites her biggest nursing challenge to date occurred this past summer when one of the mentally challenged Bosco residents had an infected foot that required surgery. The follow-up involved more than 5 months of daily dressing

changes while she tried to keep the wound clean. Since Bosco Boys Home is also a chicken and pig farm, this proved quite difficult. However, with perseverance, Mimi has been successful and the boy’s foot has continued to improve. Faith is an important part of the Bosco Boys’ Home. They receive support from the church community St. Paul of the Cross Cathedral. Which is located near the home. In the US, the Bosco Boys Home is sponsored and operated by the Sisters of Mercy, South Central Community. Outside of Bosco, she also works on the Mandeville dioceses

clinic committee. The committee serves people in the middle of the Island through four clinics. Mimi orders the clinic medicines and supplies and coordinates the Medical groups that come down to the clinics. But her main focus is giving the boys at the home love and a sense of family. “Over the years, it gives me great pleasure to see the boys return and tell me how well they are doing, especially in their trades,” she said. “It is surprising how some are now 30 and 40 years old and return to show their family, friends and bosses where they grew up and were trained.”

Twice each day, the boys feed the 6,000 chickens at St. John Bosco Boys Home. This responsibility is part of their Animal Husbandry Program. Sunday mornings is haircut day, which is part of the extensive hygiene training each boy living at Bosco receives.

Poem Written by a Tuesday Nursing I clinical group: Alexa, Meghan, Kristina, Kelli, Maddie, and Kaitlyn Today we have our nursing care plan for Mr. Smith, a 79 year old man. He fell at his home and didn't injure his hand, but his fractured right hip does not let him stand. His C/C is constant stabbing pain. He grimaces when he moves. It's all on his brain. Unable to get up without help from Lorraine, our goal is for his complaints to wane. When he walks he gets pretty weak, with a sluggish cap refill, diminished pulses on his feet. Lorraine doesn't want to see him get meek, so some nursing interventions is what we seek. He lives alone and can't drive to the store. His impaired mobility is something we can't ignore. Alternative living conditions are something we might explore, because getting Mr. Smith better is all we ask for.

WHOOT KNEW!

Whoot the Broomball Star

Our GSC Whoot participated in Mascot Broomball, an event sponsored by 3CDC at Fountain Square. Whoot was one of about 20 Cincinnati area mascots to take the ice and battle it out for a 30 minute Broomball match. The match ended in a 33 tie. Whoot had an assist on the tying Blue Team score.

Recycling Paint and Collecting Items In December, some GSC students and staff volunteered at Matthew 25: Ministries’ Rainbow Paint Reblending Program. The group opened paint cans and poured the contents into primary color barrels. The latex paint is sent and used by the poor throughout the U.S. and around the world for rehab and upgrade projects. The Student Government held a Thanksgiving Collection of canned goods and toiletry items for TriHealth Ministries Outreach Program. The items were delivered just after Thanksgiving.

Dear Fellow Alumni, As I walk down the halls of Good Samaritan College, I see a group of students huddled together intently observing the instructor demonstrate sterile technique. If you’re like me, these scenes take you right back to your days as a student at GSC. GSC continues to provide high-quality education to a student body that looks different than when we attended, yet the highest standards remain in place, just as I remember. Today, most students are not young women right out of high school.
