Outside The College Doors

When GSC is on spring or Christmas break or summer recess, Chemistry Professor Karan Singh is nowhere to be found around campus. Instead, he is usually vacationing on another continent or out at sea on a cruise. Karan has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles over the years, visiting cities, jungles, mountains and beaches around the world. How did you form this love for travel?

Life has a tendency to become a monotonous blue when one day slips into another day. Travel breaks the monotony and as we get older, only memories are left. I once saw a T-shirt which was inspirational to me. It said that if life throws lemons at you then look for vodka. Traveling is my vodka to make lemons useful.

What continents have you visited? All, except for Antarctica and Australia.

What is your favorite vacation spot around the world?

Canadian Rockies (Banff and Lake Louise), Alaska, Dominica, St. Lucia, Aruba, Thailand, Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Island), Amsterdam.

What’s your best tip for those of us who haven’t traveled the world?

Book airline tickets very early on a Sunday morning or early evening on Tuesdays to get the best prices. Stay in places that are at least as clean and good as your own house. Otherwise, it becomes frustrating. Pay for almost everything BEFORE leaving, counting money during a vacation is depressing. Always carry some currency of the country being visited because a credit card payment might be denied or ATM might not be available.

Which is your favorite type of setting and why? Best Beach: Magen’s Bay in St. Thomas and Virgin Gorda, Ko Phi Phi Island.

Best Mountains: Canadian Rockies, Himalayan Mountains in

Nepal and Bhutan. Best City: Amsterdam, beautiful and laid-back lifestyle. Best Jungle: Dominica (Caribbean), Sunderban (India): both absolutely greenest places on earth. Best food: Thailand

What is the biggest “uh-oh” moment you’ve experienced while traveling?

A long time ago, I decided to try a newly opened airport and hotel in Lukla, Nepal (near the base camp for climbing Mt. Everest). The airport now has been designated as the most dangerous airport in the world, something that I did not know at the time. The runway is only 500 yards long and is at 10,000 feet altitude on the side of a 22,000 foot mountain. The approach to the runway is between two towering mountains, and clouds obscure the view without warning. Gusts from the top of the mountain can slam little planes into the ground any time and weather changes every few minutes. There are kids who are responsible for clearing the runway from goats before a plane lands. There are no radars at the airport and you land when you land. The landing and take-off were truly breathtaking and stomach churning.

What is the one place you think everyone should try to visit in their lifetime and why is it so special?

Ko Phi Phi Island in Thailand. I went there last year totally unplanned. In fact, I knew absolutely nothing about the place. I was approached by a travel agent at Bangkok airport who showed me some pictures and suggested that I go there, so I did. Absolutely breathtaking islands in the Andaman Sea. Great hotels and wonderful food. Also watched a soccer game between two teams of elephants and a performance of monkeys going to school to learn the process of plucking good coconuts from tall trees.

What do you usually do at the places you visit?

Depends on the place. I like to hike, so I love mountains. In a city like Amsterdam, there are a lot of museums to see. Of course, I like to try local cuisine.

Where will you be traveling for your next vacation? Maldive. The country is probably going to

disappear in ten years with global warming and I want to be sure I see it before it’s gone.

April “I am really excited to be here,” Dr. Hauschildt said. “It is evident to me already that at GSC we live our mission through the professional education and services we provide our students. I’m looking forward to working with our board of trustees, health system leadership, administration, faculty, staff, students, and our strong Alumni base that takes such great interest in our continued success as a college. ” Jim and his family moved to Cincinnati over the Christmas holidays from Kansas City, Missouri, where he had been the President/Chief Academic Officer at Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences. Affiliated with St. Luke’s Hospital, the SLCHS has almost 600 students and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. During his tenure at the college, Jim fostered new grants and other funding of $1.5 million and spearheaded new revenue development of $6 million. He led strategic planning for the college and helped develop and implement a new master’s degree program. A search committee consisting of members from the College faculty, staff and student body, TriHealth and GSC administration, GSC Alumni Board, and GSC Board of Trustees, spent several months in the selection process. “We conducted a national search to find the best person to lead our College and Jim became the committee’s consensus candidate,” said Meg McCann, Chair of the GSC Board of Trustees. “Jim brings the experience and the academic credentials required to take the College to the next level. We also saw his passion for health care and education as critically important; we’re thrilled to have him as part of the Good Samaritan College team.” Jim began his nursing career in 1996 when he graduated from Allen School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa. His career has expanded into other areas, such as clinical nursing in military and civilian health systems, college-level teaching and corporate training. Along the way, he earned a BSN from the University of Kansas; an MA from Webster University; an EdD from University of Northern Iowa. Jim, his wife Kianna and children Lauren (16) and Andrew (13) are residing in Mason, Ohio.

President Cohen Retires

T

he final boxes were packed. His pictures were off his desk and down from the walls. Most of his goodbye celebrations had taken place. President Cohen was beginning his retirement in a few days. We asked him to reflect on his Presidency and his legacy as the last Director of Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing and the first President of Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science.

Tell us a bit about your career journey to GSC? After serving in the Army, I attended Ball State University on the GI Bill. I selected nursing somewhat on a whim…a lifelong friend’s future wife was studying nursing when I started college and I was intrigued by her studies and experiences. Since I had no other burning interests when I entered college, I chose Nursing as a major and it stuck. Following graduation, I married Cindy and we moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. My first jobs were in Surgical Recovery and then Emergency/ Trauma. A job opened at the school of nursing where my friend’s wife worked. I was offered 50 cents/hour raise, day shift, and no nights and weekends, and from that time forward I have been an educator. During my time at that school, I taught in all areas of nursing and eventually became the Assistant Director of the school. In 1986, the hospital closed the school and we moved to Albany, New York, where I became the Administrative Director of the Samaritan School of Nursing. While there, we converted the school to a degreegranting program recognized by the New York Board of Regents. In 1989, we moved to Cincinnati and the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing.

Give us a few of what you consider your high points and proudest achievements here at GSC. Re-founding the school as an independent private college was an extraordinary experience. We really had the vision in the early nineties, but it wasn’t until 1998 that we really started down the path in earnest. If you add in all the associated approvals and accreditation, this really dominated my entire tenure. I am very proud of the Alumni Association. We had a few little bumps in the beginning but my philosophy for the college was that we had an obligation to serve everyone. Together we’ve raised nearly $5 million for endowments and restricted funds, and that is a pretty good legacy. Was any one of those achievements also your most difficult? I do not view the many achievements as difficult…it was the work. Some things evolved and were accomplished more timely than others. We had a vision, we set goals, and we worked together to achieve them. Tell us a few of your memorable moments: Students: It is always commencement…Nothing better than seeing the product of your work, and the promise of their future in their faces. Alumni: Our first Phonathon…we took over the hospital Accounting Department because they had a lot of phones and called every graduate we could find. And we beat our goal! The Young at Heart Luncheon each year is always a favorite. Faculty/Staff: When we always pulled together for each other. Didn’t ever matter whether it was personal, or family, or college related, we have been great colleagues and, better yet, great friends.

Is there any goal you had for the college that you were unable to achieve during your presidency? If so, what is it? The college is ready to expand degree offerings and grow its student body but is limited by its facilities. I am sorry this did not get the attention it deserved. What are your hopes for the college over the next few years? The college is really positioned to drive toward fulfilling its vision to be the regional leader in nursing and health care education. I know the college will succeed in developing a graduate DNP program. And to begin expansion into other allied health occupations for workforce development should also be a priority. This college could easily have 2000 students in multiple degree programs and really have an impact on health care workforce development for the whole region. You’ve hit several family milestones while you were President of GSC. Can you share a little about your family and how it has grown over the years? When we arrived in 1989, we had three daughters under 15 months: twins and one to follow. Obviously, they have been and are the center of Cindy and my family life and they grew up around Good Sam, too. All three have completed undergraduate and, within the next year, graduate school

at UC. The twins are married and a wedding in May will complete three weddings in two years. What are your plans for retirement? The only plan right now is to change our lifestyle to a more leisurely pace and get through the wedding in May. From there we will just see where it takes us. Share with us a nugget of wisdom that you’ve learned through your experiences at GSC and that you can leave with us. I think for me professionally and for the College - to not let anybody limit accomplishing your vision…keep working through it. Don’t focus on the problem but on the solutions. It is easy for someone to say you can’t or shouldn’t do something but if you believe in it, you keep working it… find a way…around, over, or through…but you must keep moving forward. We get to make choices all the time about our attitude and how we treat other people. Whether you are interacting with folks in environmental services, catering or maintenance, or with upper leadership and renowned professionals, it really takes no energy at all to treat people with respect, to be nice and appreciate who they are and what they do, and to smile…it’s an easy choice.

The BlueStreak

At the final Good Samaritan College Board of Trustees Meeting, Morey looked back on his career with this reflection.

Steve Jobs said when asked about finding happiness in your career, “The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Throughout our life, especially in teaching, we have serious choices to make. Every moment, every situation, every encounter offers us a chance to bring life to it. If life is for learning and all of life teaches, then every person we teach and every moment of our teaching presents a unique opportunity. What a great way to spend a career… to teach and develop generations of wonderful young people. I can only reflect that I have been so lucky to have found such happiness in my career.

Sherri Haynes Joyce ‘88 Alumni Association President I want to express my sincere gratitude to President Cohen for the dedicated time and self-investment he has provided to Good Samaritan College. The alumni appreciate his support and guidance over the years. The Alumni Association expresses a warm welcome to Dr. James Hauschildt, our new GSC President. He attended our January Alumni Board of Directors meeting to greet our members. We look forward to working with him with all our alumni activities. The alumni have had some excellent events this past year. In September, our Alumni Social included Dr. Singh’s talk on The Chemistry of Love. Lots of fun and laughter occurred that evening. In October, we presented a continuing education event on Human Trafficking 101. More than 50 people attended this seminar. Alumni stated that this was an “eye opener” for many. In November, we celebrated our seasoned alumni with a Young at Heart Luncheon. The Historic Inclines of Cincinnati talk at the luncheon provided an educational experience. Did you know that Cincinnati had five inclines all running at one time? In December we went to Chicago by bus for Christmas Shopping. In the past, this was a one-night trip but it was a. two-night event this year. Many felt the two nights were more relaxing and less rushed. The weather was beautiful and it was a financially successful event, profiting more than $4,000 for the Alumni Association Annual Fund. Please look at future events in this Blue Streak to re-connect with your alumni friends. Plans for next year’s bus trip are underway. Do not forget about our Homecoming events on April 29th and April 30th. Details on all upcoming events are on the Alumni Page. Join us for an educational or social program this year!
