CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE In Spring, 2017, Dr. Karan Singh was awarded the “GSC Outstanding Educator of the Year,” due to his impressive teaching ability, demonstrated course outcomes, and award-winning personality. Dr. Singh, Professor of Chemistry, has taught various courses at the college for over 35 years, most notably in Chemistry. He exemplifies a student-centered approach in his teaching by going the extra mile for students to help them learn and apply course content. He often comes in on weekends to meet with students around their work and family schedules to conduct review and guidance sessions. Dr. Singh is known thoughout the college as a gentleman, scholar, and advocate for the students. “Dr Singh’s passion and excellence for education along with the success of his students is extraordinary. He uses his humor to maintain attention and has a way of relating material to real life experiences. He remains current and is very knowledgeable in the field which he teaches. He makes learning easy and fun. He sincerely respects students and conveys a caring attitude. He is willing to help outside class hours and on the weekend. He invests in his students. Once you are his student you will always be his student. His giving becomes contagious. He truly demonstrates a sincere desire to teach. COLLEGE CALENDAR

Industry forces are driving colleges and universities to operate more effectively and efficiently in support of students through programs that are flexible, integrated, efficient, and affordable. The Department of Higher Education recently published a 2017 report on principles guiding collegiate stakeholders to envision and expand the impact of higher education. Namely, promoting academic success through guiding students toward education that enables them to achieve their goals, is suitable to their needs, and aligns with their interests. Additionally, these concepts center around preparing students for post-secondary work, and are designed to be flexible, supportive environments building meaningful pathways to program completion and successful transition to employment.

• Blended Learning Designs: This trend has shifted to understanding how applications of digital modes of teaching are impacting students.

According to the New Media Consortium’s (NMC) and EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative’s (ELI) 2017 Higher Education Edition of the annual Horizon Report, technology is a primary driver of healthcare and higher educations’ pursuit in increasing levels of quality outcomes. Key trends that are serving as accelerators include:

• Collaborative Learning: Cloud-based services, apps, and other digital tools promote persistent connectivity, enabling students and educators to access and contribute to shared workspaces anytime.

• Growing Focus on Measuring Learning: As societal and economic factors redefine what skills are necessary in today’s workforce, colleges and universities must rethink how to define, measure, and demonstrate subject mastery and soft skills, such as creativity and collaboration. • Redesigning Learning Spaces: Educational settings are increasingly designed to support project-based interactions with attention to greater mobility, flexibility and multiple device usage.

• Advancing Cultures of Innovation: The focus of this trend has shifted from understanding the value of fostering the exploration of new ideas to finding ways to replicate it across a span of diverse learning institutions. • Deeper Learning Approaches: To remain motivated, students need to be able to make clear connections between their coursework and the real world, and how the new knowledge and skills will impact them.

WHOOT NEW! CRAYONS FOR COMPUTERS

Whoot and several other Tri-state mascots visited Trader Joe’s in August to celebrate Wart’s (Trader Joe’s mascot) birthday and Crayons to Computers. As part of the celebration, shoppers wrote cards of Good Wishes for Cincinnati area students who are receiving backpacks of school supplies through the Crayons to Computers program.

WHOOT AT THE ZOO In July, the College Board of Trustees held a retreat in the Tree Tops Conference Center at the Cincinnati Zoo. It was a full day of updates related to active progress made on strategic college initiatives. Meanwhile, Whoot entertained kids at the zoo. At the end of the retreat, the Board of Trustees recieved a surprise visit from Whoot and two zoo animals. Whoot got to meet Caspian, the Eagle Owl!

GSC students volunteered for the Flying Pig Marathon as part of a community service project on behalf of the Omicron Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. The students were assigned to the children’s races and distributed pink gift bags to runners at the finish line.

NUR201 visited Killgour Elementary and Bond Hill Academy. They created teaching activities based on the specific school’s needs and taught 20 classes (grades K-6) utilizing the tools they created. Activities included a PowerPoint and an interactive game.

No Easy Path to Success Take one minute to talk to Vikki Kimbrough and you will instantly know she is passionate about Good Samaritan College and becoming a nurse. From her first day of class where she was a nervous wreck, to her scholarship awards that help her with the cost of tuition, she feels blessed to be part of a wonderful legacy. Vikki, like many students at Good Sam, has not had the easiest path in pursing her education; that has not stopped her in fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She has overcome many obstacles: domestic violence, surviving breast cancer, where her diagnosis was at the young age of 37, and being a non-traditional student. While a patient, she experienced people who cared for and helped her. “I promised to God I would fulfill my dream of becoming a nurse no matter what age so that I am able to give back and help others,” Vikki explained. Vikki is fulfilling that promise. She is a Nursing 3 student who will be graduating in May 2018. When asked about her experience at Good Sam she felt that she has been very lucky to have small class sizes, outstanding professors, and scholarships to help ease her financial burdens. Her biggest support at the College has been Dr. Singh who she truly admires. “He is dedicated, unselfish, and 20 years later, you’re still his student.” She says that when things get tough, as they often do in nursing, she will turn to him and he gives her encouraging words, “You got this, if it was easy anyone could do it.” The inspiration from her professors as well as the financial support she receives helps her every day. The financial assistance allows her to work fewer hours, so she can focus on her classwork. When she received her first scholarship, her thoughts were, “I’m so thankful that someone took a chance on me. Someone who had read my letters of recommendation and believed that I would become an excellent nurse.” Once she graduates in May she is excited to begin her career and start giving back to help a current nursing student. WORTH NOTING New Programs & Resources GSC Offering Two Medical Assistant Programs GSC is again expanding its offerings to the Tri-state community. This Fall, the college is offering a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant preparatory course for non-certified TriHealth Medical Assistant employees with at least 2 years of experience. By completing the 6-week, evening-class program, students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam. Dozens of TriHealth MAs have already expressed an interested in taking the class which will be offered twice during the Fall. The 12-month program includes a 200-hour practicum. The curriculum will be a combination of classroom clinical, lab and medical office training (delivered in lecture, laboratory, and simulation formats). Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the RMA exam to become a Registered Medical Assistant.

GSC Phlebotomy Students Learned the “Stick” in Summer Classes Seven GSC students took part in a Trihealth Phlebotomy Program at the college this summer. Upon completion of the program, they went to work in Phlebotomist positions in the Trihealth system while completing their nursing degrees at the college. Not only can these students improve their venipuncture and micro-collection skills,but it’s the perfect opportunity to gain extensive patient contact and exposure to the hospital environment. The phlebotomy program was a natural synergy between TriHealth and GSC. TriHealth had an immediate need for phlebotomists and GSC students were easily trainable since they were prepared academically, and comfortable serving a diverse patient population. The interest from the students was overwhelming, and the feedback from TriHealth laboratory staff has been very positive. GSC expects this program to continu in the near future.

GSC Takes Off with new Orientation Format Students entering the college experienced a new type of orientation this summer when “GSC Takeoff” was held in the beginning of August. The new format moved students through stations where they learned about topics ranging from Compliance and Parking to Clubs and the Facilities Renovation. Each student was offered a Blessing of the Hands and a photo op with Whoot. Returning students also were briefed on changes in the college during three lunch presentations during the first week of classes.

Need a Little Help? Find it Through the New GSC Student Assistance Program Through a partnership with TriHealth, GSC students and their dependents now can take advantage of free confidential services such as 24/7 counseling, financial education, attorney consultations, and identity recovery support. Through this program, the college also will be holding Lunch & Learns on topics important to students. The program is offered through the TriHealth Employee Assistance Program. 15

WORTH NOTING Promotions Megan Ayers MFA, Associate Professor of English was promoted from an Assistant Professor role. JoAnn Sommer MSN, Assistant Professor in the Skills and Simulation Center recently became a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Tisha Bruemmer MBA, Marketing Communications Administrator was previously the Alumni Program Administrator and has been with the college since 2004. Terri Pullen DA, Director Institutional Assessment/Research was previously the Director of Institutional Assessment and Planning. Abby Villarroya MSN, Undergraduate Nursing Department Chair was an Assistant Professor at the college for five years.

New Employees Erica McCain J.D., Student Success Director & Title IX – 504 Coordinator brings experience in federal healthcare claims, regulatory issues, disability and accommodations law. Kierstin Nishihata MBA, Alumni Program Administrator was previously the Administrative Secretary of Patient Experience at TriHealth. Norma Ragland BSN, Manager of Medical Assistant Program previously led successful accreditation efforts at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Clark State Community College.

Retirements Yvonne Irvin, Secretary, Academic Affairs retired in June. She came to the college in 2003 and supported several departments.

Mary Jo Kathman, Dean of Student and Alumni Services retired in May after 35 years of service to the college. During her tenure at GSC, she oversaw Student Government, Student and Alumni Activities, Fundraising and the Archives of the College. Although Mary Jo was not a graduate of GSC, she was named an honorary Alumni. Moya Kearney, Department Chair Skills and Simulation Center retired in June after 39 years at the College. She began her career here in 1978 as an OB Instructor and moved into a Nursing Department Chair role in 1992. Moya was instrumental in community education programs development. One of her first was the Healthy Moms & Babies program. Dr. Dave McCowan, Chair of General Education retired this summer. Dave has been at GSC since 2010 and has served as the Chair of General Education since 2014. Under his leadership, the ASHS program produced its first graduates and he started the Men-In-Nursing chapter at GSC. Joann Sullivan-Mann Professor and Skills and Simulation Center Coordinator retired in July after working 27 years at the College. In 2007, Joann coordinated the current Simulation and Skills Lab which houses many advanced educational technology simulators. She requested and received many GSH Guild Grants to enhance the Lab equipment. Fall 2017

ALUMNI CLASS NOTES Brandi Baldwin ‘11 worked as a floor nurse before becoming the Assistant Director of Nursing at Judson Care Center. She passed the NP boards in February and is now working as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Ohio with Advance Health. Christopher Baute ‘14 started his career in pediatric oncology, and transitioned into a new position in 2016. He was one of 6 nurses chosen to open the first proton radiation therapy center in the area and continues to work to improve that department as it grows. Carol Martin Belmont ‘67 retired in 2012 from her role as Vice President of Dell Services. She has since been actively involved in assisting abused, abandoned, and neglected children in 3 Florida counties. She serves as the guardian for 6 children and has been named President of Children’s Guardian Fund Board for next 2 years. April Haddix ‘06 is a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital who fosters babies born addicted to drugs. She has made it her mission to wean the infants off drugs and help their mothers get clean. Her extraordinary work has been featured many times in the news. Ashel Kruetzkamp ‘99 is the Director of Nursing, Emergency Department, at St. Elizabeth in Fort Thomas. She was one of the first to identify the community-wide heroin crisis. She was also the main organizer of the Young Women Lead conference for 700 high school girls at NKU. Emma Flodder Meyer ‘11 got married in 2013. She is now the surgery case manager for the gynecology and podiatry department at her hospital. She completed her BSN degree in 2016 and is looking forward to the future opportunities nursing will bring. Katrice Roper ‘12 has committed herself to help in the fight to save lives during this heroin epidemic that is hitting our communities. She is the Director of Nursing for an addiction facility in Middletown, focusing on addictions and mental health issues. Amanda Stevens ‘13 & ‘16 became a Certified Medical-Surgical RN last year and this year she took a new position in the ICU at Bethesda North Hospital. Corinn Taylor ‘97 is the Fetal Infant Mortality Review & Adult/Maternal Child Home Programs Director, Cincinnati Health Department: Giving babies a fighting chance. Jennifer Williams ‘00 & ‘16 received the Florence Nightingale Award from UC College of Nursing in May. She also was awarded a one year planning grant from Bethesda Inc. to investigate increasing primary care access in Butler County and improving patient engagement & outcomes. She has a new role as Project Grant Coordinator. Neka Hutson Williams ‘04 left being a NICU nurse at GSH for 11 years to become a flight nurse at Cincinnati Children’s. She obtained her RNC-NIC last year, along with her TNCC. She also was nominated for the Florence Nightingale Award this year. ALUMNI ADVISORY BOARD Greetings Fellow Alumni,

I hope your summer was filled with fun, family, and much-needed relaxation.

The Executive Committee met frequently this summer to identify and realign the Alumni Association to meet the needs of the College and of Alumni as we look to the future. We identified a need for more information sharing among College stakeholders. Therefore, we invited a newly-formed, diverse group of key members, now called the Alumni Advisory Board, for advice and feedback. Our goal was to appraise the effectiveness of the Alumni Association’s activities and outreach methods, and to form a plan to meet future needs. From our meetings, two themes emerged: first, the need to develop strategies for alumni engagement, and

second, the need to provide opportunities for student and alumni interaction. To support these needs, the Board reviewed and approved a new set of bylaws. There were three major changes adapted in the revised bylaws:

• The Alumni Association was renamed The Alumni Advisory Board to reflect its role as an advisory body. • Composition of the Board was expanded to include students, faculty, and the Good Samaritan Foundation. • The Executive Committee continues as the working arm of the Board. These changes in structure will carry on and strengthen the Board’s overarching goal to engage all of us--Alumni, students and the College--in meaningful and dynamic ways.

Alumni Advisory Board BYLAWS

Article I - Name The name of this organization is: Good Samaritan Alumni Advisory Board, Cincinnati, Ohio

Article II - Purpose The purpose of this Board shall be to foster in each graduate a lifelong commitment to Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science and to the continuing experience of learning. Section 1. The Alumni Advisory Board is an auxiliary organization of Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science and shall be responsible to the College . Section 2. As a reflection of the alumni body, the board provides the college with insights into alumni sentiment on various issues. The work of the board is primarily engagement, not policy-making, or governance. Section 3. The Board. serves as a liaison between alumni and our administration and staff to provide input on alumni activities and projects. Section 4. The Board members shall support the Annual Fund Campaign which is implemented through The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. The Foundation governs all fundraising for the College and thereby oversees the fundraising activities of the Board. Section 5. The Board will lead alumni in honoring the achievements of fellow alumni. Section 6. The Board shall advocate in the Community on behalf of the College.

Article V – Reporting Activities Section 1. Annual Report. The annual report of the Advisory Board will be announced in The Blue Streak. The Advisory Board reports to the members on the year’s activities and projects and how they met the yearly Goals and announces appointments to the Advisory Board. Section 2. Board Meeting. A regular meeting of the Board is held two to three times per year. Section 3. Special Meeting. A special meeting of the Alumni Advisory Board may be held at the discretion of the President of the Board or upon request of two members of the Board. Due notice shall be given of such meetings to state the purpose of the meeting. Section 4. Executive Committee Meeting. The executive committee meets on the request of any member of the executive committee. This committee does not hold stated meetings. Section 5. Attendance. A member of the Board who is unable to be present at two successive meetings of the board is deemed to have resigned membership on the Board. The Board of Directors will appoint an alumni member to fill the unexpired term. Section 6. Quorum. At any meeting of the Board, regularly and properly called, a majority of the members constitute a quorum.

Article VI – Executive Committee/Working Groups Section 1. Executive Committee The Executive Committee shall consist of the President and Vice President of the Board, the President of the College, Alumni Programs Administrator, Marketing Communications Administrator, and Foundation Officer. It shall have the authority to act on all matters between meetings of the Board of Directors. The purpose of the Executive Committee is to oversee operationalizing of the goals identified by the Alumni Advisory Board by determining a Suggested Projects List, presenting it to the Board for review and prioritization; forming and overseeing Ad Hoc Work Groups to implement the projects and present a yearly summary of success of initiatives to the Board. Section 2. Ad Hoc Working Groups The Working Groups shall consist of representative groups of Alumni that come together to implement the projects which will operationalize the goals and report to the Executive Committee.

Article III – Membership of the Association Membership in the Alumni Association which is represented by the Alumni Board: Section 1. Alumni - All graduates of Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science, and the Seton School of Practical Nursing are members in full standing of the Association. Section 2. Bylaws. These bylaws may be amended by the Board or at any meeting of the Board by a two-thirds majority vote of the members present and voting, provided the proposed amendments were published with the call to the meeting. Section 3. Parliamentary Authority. At all meetings of the Board, the conduct of said meeting shall be in accordance with the provisions of these bylaws. All documents or materials of this organization shall contain gender neutral language. In the absence of a provision in regard to procedure, Robert’s Rule of Order, Revised shall prevail. Article IX - Effective Date The bylaws shall become effective August 18, 2017
