The call for applications for the 2015 GHC-GBCHealth Business Action on Health Awards has been extended. These awards highlight the important and innovative contributions of the corporate sector to improving global health outcomes. Corporations and their NGO partners are encouraged to apply. Extended deadline: June 30.

Global Health Roundup 

Last week, USAID, the World Bank and WHO hosted the Measurement and Accountability for Health Summit in Washington, DC. During the three day meeting, The Roadmap for Health Measurement and Accountability and the 5-Point Call to Action were both released. These documents provide the support for ensuring effective measurement and accountability systems in country-led global health programming. GHC, in partnership with


 

CHESTRAD International and Action for Global Health, released a civil society statementcalling for clearly defined measurement and accountability mechanisms and for meaningful engagement of civil society in these mechanisms. . The Middle East Institute's full-day conference, "Cut Off from Care," on June 25 in Washington, DC, will reflect on the extraordinary policy challenges posed by the health care crisis of displaced populations in the Middle East. The discussions in and around this high-level event should energize and inform efforts by donor governments and other contributors in emergency response and in the rebuilding of health systems. A new WHO and World Bank Group report, "Tracking universal health coverage," shows that 400 million people do not have access to essential health services and 6% of population tipped into or pushed further into extreme poverty because of health spending. Advocacy Update 

FY16 Appropriations Update: On June 11, the House Appropriations Committee passed the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations (SFOPs) bill for fiscal year 2016 (FY16). Overall funding for global health is flat compared to FY15 enacted levels. Family planning and reproductive health is capped at $461 million which is the FY08 enacted level and a reduction of $150 million from FY15. The full House could vote on the SFOPs bill before the July 4th recess, but it has yet to be scheduled for floor consideration. Detailed funding chart available here.
