AUTUNNO - AUTUMN 2021

Prima [ENG] Hegel states that everything is inherently contradictory and that contradiction is omnipresent in the existence of reality. It is impossible to contradict such an idea in light of the events of 2021! This has been the year whose buzzword is “sustainability”. Be it speaking about the environment, economy or social matters, the shared ideal is to start a process of social and ecological change and transformation that will allow us to fulfil our needs today and guarantee the necessary resources to satisfy the needs of the future generations. Such a process involves the great systems and the everyday actions of every single person. There are seeds of sustainability sprouting in tourism: an increasing number of travellers opt to use less air travel and go on foot or by bicycle when on holiday. More and more tourists prefer choosing typical restaurants that serve food made from locally sourced produce, and lodge in environmentally-conscious hotels and holiday rentals. Tourists now know they are guests, and as such, they respect the host country’s culture. Nevertheless, some fundamental steps towards a form of tourism that clashes considerably with the idea of sustainability have marked this past summer: aerospace tourism. Indeed, on 11 July, Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic, and a crew of four people carried out the first tourist space trip in history and enjoyed the view of Earth from approximately 80 kilometres. Nine days later, on 20 July (anniversary of the moon landing of the Apollo 11), the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, participated in his Blue Origin’s first suborbital space mission. And still, on 16 September, the SpaceX Falcon9 rocket of the visionary founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, left on a three-day trip around the planet with four civilians and no professional astronaut. These travels, of course, have stellar priced tickets: an 11-minute space experience with Virgin Atlantic can cost something like 250 thousand dollars (with prices now sky-rocketing!), and a trip on the Falcon 9 can add up to a couple of dozens of millions of dollars. What evidently clashes with the sustainability of space tourism is that it is exclusively for the very rich and raises concerns regarding the environmental cost, which, too, is stellar. Let’s put it simply: at present, a civilian that can travel to space is not a tourist but a bold privileged person. And as I learn that there are already over 600 people that have booked their space trip with Virgin Galactic, a quote by Robert De Niro comes to mind, reminding us that “There’s nothing more ironic and absurd as life itself.”

[ITA] Hegel sosteneva che tutte le cose sono in sé stesse contraddittorie e che la contraddizione è onnipresente nel reale. Come dargli torto, guardando quello che sta accadendo nel 2021? Questo è l’anno in cui la parola d’ordine è sostenibilità. Che si parli di ambiente, di economia o di società, l’ideale comune e condiviso è quello di avviare un processo di cambiamento ecologico e sociale che permetta di soddisfare i bisogni del presente e che consenta di farlo anche alle generazioni future, lasciando loro adeguate risorse. È un processo che coinvolge i grandi sistemi e la quotidianità dei singoli. Anche nel turismo stanno germogliando i semi della sostenibilità: sempre più viaggiatori cercano di usare meno l’aereo e quando possibile vanno a piedi o usano la bicicletta, privilegiano ristoranti tipici che fanno uso di prodotti a chilometro zero (o quasi) e alloggiano in strutture costruite nel rispetto dell’ambiente e alimentate da energie rinnovabili. E sanno che il turista è un ospite, e come ospiti rispettano la cultura di chi li accoglie. Eppure l’estate appena trascorsa è stata costellata da importanti e fondamentali tappe verso una forma di turismo che rischia di stridere sensibilmente con l’idea di sostenibilità: il turismo aerospaziale. L’11 luglio infatti Richard Branson, il fondatore di Virgin Galactic, assieme a quattro uomini di equipaggio ha effettuato il primo volo turistico spaziale della storia e ha potuto godersi la vista della Terra da circa 80 chilometri di distanza. Nove giorni dopo, il 20 luglio (anniversario dello storico sbarco dell’Apollo 11 sulla Luna) il fondatore di Amazon, Jeff Bezos, ha partecipato alla prima missione spaziale con volo suborbitale della sua Blue Origin. E il 16 settembre il razzo SpaceX Falcon9 del visionario amministratore delegato di Tesla, Elon Musk, è partito per un viaggio di tre giorni attorno al pianeta con a bordo solo quattro civili, senza alcun astronauta professionista. Viaggi i cui biglietti hanno prezzi stellari: si va dai 250mila dollari (ma sono destinati a salire, e di molto!) per gli 11 minuti di esperienza spaziale con Virgin Atlantic, alle decine di milioni di dollari per le giornate a bordo di Falcon 9. Ma non è solo il fatto che questi viaggi siano riservati a facoltosi passeggeri ad allontanare il turismo aerospaziale dalla sostenibilità, quanto le preoccupazioni sui loro costi ambientali, anch’essi stellari. Mettiamola così: per ora un civile che va nello spazio non è un turista, ma un coraggioso privilegiato. E a pensare che sono già oltre 600 le persone che hanno prenotato un volo con Virgin Galactic, tornano alla mente le parole di Robert De Niro, che ci ricorda che «non c’è niente di più ironico e contraddittorio della vita stessa».

[ITA] Lungo la strada che collega Aquileia e Palmanova, due cittadine Patrimonio Unesco, sorge Strassoldo, una graziosa località che fa battere il cuore a chi ama i piccoli borghi storici. Un borgo così bello da far parte del prestigioso club dei Borghi più Belli d’Italia. Questa frazione di Cervignano del Friuli è famosa principalmente per i suoi due castelli e il villaggio medievale sorto attorno ad essi, attraversato da rogge e limpidi corsi d›acqua. I due manieri furono costruiti attorno all’anno Mille a difesa della via Julia Augusta dalla nobile famiglia di origine tedesca che in quel periodo si insediò qui. A Strassoldo abitano ancora oggi i conti che diedero il nome alla località (o viceversa? non si sa...) e che sono proprietari dei castelli da quando la storia ci ha lasciato traccia, il che è un fatto raro nel panorama europeo. In questo antico borgo, da ben 23 anni le primavere e gli autunni sono allietati da suggestive manifestazioni nei castelli, che eccezionalmente aprono le proprie porte ai visitatori e ospitano espositori e artigiani selezionati. Anche l’autunno 2021 vedrà la festa a Strassoldo. Sarà “Magici intrecci autunnali”. Cuore del programma rimarranno artigiani, vivaisti d’eccellenza, suggestivi addobbi autunnali e il fascino antico del sito, mentre nuovo sarà il formato, studiato per garantire la massima sicurezza. Venerdì 15, sabato 16 e domenica 17 ottobre un filo magico legherà la storia e la natura del luogo con gli espositori. Sarà il momento ideale per fare acquisti natalizi originali, senza per questo spendere cifre esose. L’itinerario si dipanerà fluidamente in parchi e giardini secolari e nella Cancelleria del Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra. L’area della manifestazione sarà molto vasta, per cui si eviteranno assembramenti e saranno garantiti i protocolli di sicurezza. Il week-end propone anche visite guidate per ammirare gli interni del Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra, che saranno abbelliti con addobbi autunnali, un piccolo angolo ristoro curatissimo e sicuro e una mostra di galline ornamentali. L’evento si terrà anche in caso di pioggia.

[ENG] Along the way between Aquileia and Palmanova – both listed as UNESCO World Heritage cities – lies a hamlet that will melt the heart of those who love small historical villages. Strassoldo is so pretty as to be listed one of the most beautiful villages by the Borghi più Belli d’Italia club. The village, just outside Cervignano del Friuli, is renowned for its two castles and the medieval hamlet crossed by small canals of fresh clear water. The two manors were built around the year one thousand by a noble family of Germanic origins to defend their property on the Via Julia Augusta. The Strassoldo noble family, who gave the village its name (or was it the other way round?) and have held the castles since records go back, still live there, fact that is quite rare in Europe. Every spring and autumn, for the last 23 years, the two manors have opened their gates to the public and come to life with a uniquely charming event where premier artists and crafts people exhibit and sell their works. In autumn 2021, the festival will once again be held in Strassoldo and dubbed “Magical Autumn Weaves”. During the weekend of 15-17 October, the festival will again be the magical thread that weaves the heritage and landscape of the historical site with the mastery of the exhibitors. It will also be a special occasion to do some Christmas shopping and buy original gifts, at very reasonable prices. The world-class artisans, premium horticulturists, spectacular autumn displays, and of course the charming age-old backdrop are always at the heart of the event, but the format, this year, has been redesigned to adhere to comprehensive health and safety measures. A predefined itinerary will flow effortlessly through the gardens, the orchards and the Chancery of the Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra, and the festival grounds extended to guarantee that social distancing protocols are followed. Guided tours of the exquisitely decorated manor of Strassoldo di Sopra will also be available during the weekend, a cosy, safe little refreshments corner and an ornamental chickens exhibition. Glory. The Apotheosis of the Unknown Soldier

[ITA] Tra il 1920 e il 1921 in tutti i paesi vittoriosi fu istituita una solennità nazionale in ricordo dei soldati morti nella Grande Guerra e la cerimonia della sepoltura del Milite Ignoto portò quel culto all’apoteosi. In Italia l’idea di tributare onoranze solenni a una salma sconosciuta di soldato tra i suoi 650.000 caduti è del colonnello Giulio Douhet, fondatore dell’Unione Nazionale Ufficiali e Soldati, che la propone tramite un articolo pubblicato nel periodico Il Dovere, da lui diretto, nell’agosto del 1920. Si presenta un disegno di legge che è approvato nell’agosto dell’anno successivo e diventa immediatamente operativo. Il ministro della Guerra, Luigi Gasparotto (di Sacile), dà subito incarico a un’apposita commissione, presieduta dal generale Giuseppe Paolini (della quale facevano parte anche quattro ex combattenti che rappresentavano l’esercito nei suoi vari gradi e nelle sue qualifiche e designati dal sindaco di Udine, Luigi Spezzotti), di percorrere i campi di battaglia in ogni zona del fronte per raccogliere undici salme non identificabili, una delle quali, scelta a sorte, sarebbe stata tumulata a Roma nel Vittoriano, il complesso monumentale inaugurato dieci anni prima in onore di Vittorio Emanuele II, primo re d’Italia.

[ENG] Between 1920 and 1921, the victorious countries instituted a National Remembrance Day to commemorate the soldiers who died in the Great War. This cult reached its culmination with the symbolic burial of the Unknown Soldier. In Italy, the idea of a ceremony for the burial of an unnamed soldier among the 650,000 fallen during WWI was proposed by Colonel Giulio Douhet, founder of the Italian National Union of Officers and Soldier, in the pages of the periodical Il Dovere on 24 August 1920. As a result, a draft law was presented, being approved and introduced the following year. The Minister of War, Luigi Gasparotto (from Sacile), immediately appointed a commission which among others included four former soldiers nominated by the mayor of Udine, Luigi Spezzotti, to represent the Army Forces. The commission’s task was to exhume the bodies of eleven unnamed soldiers from various frontline battlefields and randomly pick one to be buried in the Vittoriano – the Roman monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy that had been inaugurated ten years earlier. The first seven coffins were brought to Udine, the “capital of war”. [ITA] Le prime sette salme rinvenute vengono portate a Udine, la città che fino a tre anni prima è stata “la capitale della guerra”. La partecipazione popolare all’evento, all’arrivo dei feretri il 13 ottobre 1921 e durante i cinque giorni della loro esposizione nella chiesa di Santa Maria del Castello, è imponente e commossa, come testimoniano la stampa dell’epoca e le foto di Attilio Brisighelli conservate nell’Archivio dei Civici Musei. Fu proprio a Udine che si constatò quanto tale impresa fosse cara alla popolazione, che intervenne in massa a quel rito collettivo, con forti sentimenti di identificazione. Il 18 ottobre le sette salme sono trasportate a Gorizia, la “città martire”, nella chiesa di Sant’Ignazio, ancora mutilata e segnata dalle ferite della guerra. Nei giorni seguenti altre quattro salme vengono rinvenute nella zona del fronte: il monte Rombon, il San Michele, le foci del Timavo, Castagnevizza del Carso (limite massimo dell’avanzata italiana). Il 27 ottobre le undici salme raggiungono Aquileia. Intanto il Ministero della Guerra, attraverso il Comitato Esecutivo per le onoranze al Soldato Ignoto, aveva bandito una sorta di concorso per filmare in esclusività tutte le fasi dell’evento. L’incarico viene affidato alle organizzazioni F.A.C.I. (Federazione Artistica Cinematografica Italiana) e U.F.C. (Unione Fototecnici Cinematografici), che offrono di dare la loro opera in modo completamente disinteressato, di fare il film a loro spese e di devolvere i proventi al Comitato Nazionale degli Orfani di Guerra. Such participation is evident in the press of the time and the photos by Attilio Brisighelli, now held in the archives of the City Museum. The massive heartfelt response by the people of Udine showed how such a collective rite had evoked strong feelings of identification. On 18 October, the seven caskets were brought to Gorizia, “the martyr city”, and exposed in the war-torn church dedicated to Saint Ignatius. A couple of days later, the remains of other four unknown soldiers were exhumed on Monte Rombon, Monte San Michele, the mouth of River Timavo, Castagnevizza del Carso (the extreme point of the Italian advance). On 27 October, all eleven caskets reach Aquileia. Meanwhile, the Ministry of War, via the committee in charge of the Unknown Soldier funeral service, announced a public selection to film the various stages of the ceremony. As a result, the event was filmed by the cameramen of the Italian Cinematographic Federation and the Phototechnical Cinematographic Union. Moreover, they worked for free, donating all the proceeds to the National Committee for Orphans of the War. In light of these circumstances, the Executive Committee designated the prime filming spots to the camera operator crew – among others including Ettore Catalucci (class 1894), who was to become the “father” of Italian camera operation - to best film the entire ceremony without disturbing the progress of the formalities. The footage from the event was edited into a documentary: “Gloria. Apoteosi del Soldato Ignoto” (Glory, The Apotheo-

[ITA] matografici, tra cui Ettore Catalucci (classe 1894), che diventerà il “padre” dei tecnici italiani, le migliori facilitazioni di postazione, in modo che il film possa riuscire al meglio possibile, senza turbamento alcuno delle cerimonie in atto. Con il girato viene quindi montato il documentario “Gloria. Apoteosi del Soldato Ignoto”, che, con una narrazione fluida e grande forza comunicativa, fornisce una testimonianza immediata di quella che, fino a quel momento storico, fu la più imponente manifestazione patriottica del giovane Stato italiano, cogliendo non solo gli aspetti ufficiali, ma anche il grande impatto prodotto dall’evento sulla gente comune intervenuta in massa, riuscendo a portare su pellicola l’elaborazione di un lutto collettivo. Un prezioso documento visivo e insieme una fonte primaria in ambito storiografico, il cui restauro è stato realizzato nel 2007 dalla Cineteca del Friuli, a partire da materiali a 35mm conservati presso la Cineteca Nazionale di Roma. A Trieste viene filmato l’allestimento della carrozza-feretro che trasporterà «la Sacra Reliquia da Aquileia a Roma», come cita la didascalia della prima scena del documentario. Segue la scena del convoglio ferroviario che parte dalla sta-

Thanks to its evocative communicative force and narrative fluidity, the documentary gives evidence of perhaps the most impressive demonstration of patriotic fervour of the fledgling Italian state. Moreover, it perfectly captures both the official formality of the event and its emotional impact on the population, conveying the unfolding of collective mourning on film. As it was a visual document and primary source for historiography, the film was carefully restored in 2007 by Cineteca del Friuli, starting from the 35mm footage held in the archive of the Cineteca Nazionale, the Italian National Film Library, in Rome. The footage filmed in Trieste shows the preparation of the hearse that would transport the “Sacred Relic from Aquileia to Rome”, as the subtitles in the first scene of the documentary state. The following scene depicts the railway convoy departing from the city’s station. On the morning of 28 October 1921, the camera operators are at work in Aquileia. The military and civil authorities, ex combats, war mothers, widows and orphans walk in procession through the streets adorned with flags, floral garlands and triumphal arches

Nelle vie imbandierate e decorate con festoni, ghirlande e archi trionfali rivestiti di fronde d’alloro sfilano autorità militari e civili, ex combattenti, madri, vedove e orfani di guerra. In una scena successiva compare Emanuele Filiberto, duca d’Aosta, comandante della Terza Armata, che si appresta a lasciare Grado per raggiungere, via mare, il luogo della grande cerimonia. Particolarmente suggestive le parti filmate all’interno della Basilica di Aquileia, ove, in un’atmosfera mistica e solenne, che la pellicola rende ancor più austera, utilizzando in maniera drammatica ed espressiva i forti contrasti chiaroscurali e le spirali di fumo degli incensi e dei torcieri, si sta celebrando la sacralizzazione del sacrificio, il lutto collettivo di una nazione. Le scene girate all’interno della basilica aquileiese rendono partecipi milioni di persone (questo documentario fu proiettato in tutte le principali città italiane e anche all’estero, dove venne accolto con patriottico favore dalle comunità degli emigranti) degli stati d’animo, dell’inten-

One of the following scenes shows Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta, Commander of the Italian Third Army, leaving Grado to reach the venue of the grand ceremony via the sea. The footage filmed inside the Basilica of Aquileia with its mystical and solemn atmosphere is particularly evocative and, through careful filming, enhances the contrast between light and shadow, the swirls of smoke from the incense and candles conveying and even more austere. It, indeed, brings about the sacralization of a sacrifice, the collective grieving of a nation. The scenes inside the Basilica of Aquileia reached millions of people; indeed, the documentary was screened in all the main cities in Italy and abroad and was received with great patriotic fervour by the emigrant communities worldwide. The audiences shared the feelings and intense emotion, and the religious anticipation climaxed with the “Triestine War Mother pointing to the Unknown Soldier destined to be entombed in the Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland)”. La popolana, ripresa in piano medio e quindi in primo piano, di spalle, si prostra davanti al feretro, mentre le campane cominciano a battere tocchi grevi e profondi e i cannoni sparano a salve. La mattina del 29 ottobre il convoglio funebre parte lentamente dalla stazione di Aquileia e si dirige a velocità ridotta «sulla via del Friuli», seguito da automobili sulle strade polverose e sorvolato da velivoli dell’aviazione militare. La seconda parte del documentario inizia con l’omaggio reso alla stazione ferroviaria di Udine, ove il convoglio sosta dalle 10,10 alle 11. Poi prosegue attraverso Codroipo, il ponte sul Tagliamento, Cusano. Si ferma quindi alla stazione di Pordenone, gremitissima. Quando, dopo Sacile e Conegliano, arriva al Ponte della Priula, dalle carrozze si lanciano fiori nelle acque del Piave.

On the morning of 29 October, the funeral convoy departed from Aquileia on its slow voyage down the “via del Friuli”, followed closely by a procession of cars on the dusty roads flanking the railway and the flypast of a group of military aircraft. The second part of the documentary begins with the honours presented upon arrival at the station in Udine, where the convoy stopped for a little under an hour. The procession then continues through Codroipo, Cusano and across the bridge over River Tagliamento. Again, the train stopped in Pordenone at the station overflowing with people. After travelling past Sacile and Conegliano, the convoy rolled over Ponte della Priula bridge, where mourners scattered flowers into the waters of River Piave. [ITA] Dopo la sosta a Venezia, il viaggio continua attraverso Mestre, Padova, Montegrotto, Monselice, Pontelagoscuro, Ferrara, Bologna, l’Appennino, Firenze, Arezzo, Orvieto. È l’Italia, con le sue folle riverenti, che diventa teatro di una grandiosa celebrazione, un rito corale di cordoglio nazional-popolare: le folle ammassate nelle stazioni ferroviarie, le donne piangenti chinate lungo i binari, e i tanti bambini e tanti giovani che lungo la ferrovia lanciavano fiori al passaggio del convoglio. L’eccezionale partecipazione popolare si vede anche nelle commemorazioni a Napoli, Milano, Genova, Bergamo, Catania, Torino, documentate poi nella quarta parte del film. La notte del quarto giorno di viaggio il convoglio sosta alla periferia nord di Roma. Prima della panoramica della capitale dall’alto dei colli appare una didascalia con versi di D’Annunzio: «La Madre chiama: in te comincia il pianto, nel profondo di te comincia il canto, l’inno comincia degli imperituri». Versi che sottolineano il concetto Patria-Madre-Roma. Il figlio, che con il suo eroico sacrificio ha liberato e redento l’antica Aquileia e le terre che ad essa facevano capo, ora ritorna glorioso alla Madre-Roma.

Italy all, with its revering crowds, becomes the stage of a massive celebration of unified national mourning: the thousands of people gathering at the stations, along the railway, weeping women with their heads down in grief, and lots of children and youth scattering flowers as the convoy slowly rolled by. Exceptional public participation also took place in Naples, Milan, Genoa, Bergamo, Catania, Turin, among many others, as documented in the fourth part of the film. On the fourth night of the journey, the convoy stopped in the outskirts of Rome. In the documentary, the verses by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio: «La Madre chiama: in te comincia il pianto, nel profondo di te comincia il canto, l’inno comincia degli imperituri» which roughly translates as The mother calls and in you begins the crying. Deep within you begins the song, the hymn of the everlasting begins, introduce a panoramic shot over Italy’s capital city taken from the hills. The words underline the ideals of Motherland-Mother-Rome. With his heroic sacrifice, the son, who has liberated and redeemed ancient Aquileia and its lands, returns victorious to the Mother-Rome.

[ITA] Il 2 novembre, ricorrenza dei defunti, il convoglio funebre entra a Stazione Termini, accolto dal re Vittorio Emanuele III e dalle più alte cariche militari e civili. Questa pellicola, di grande valore storico, documenta quindi l’apoteosi di quella religione della Patria che, elaborata sin dall’inizio dell’Ottocento (soprattutto a livello letterario), trova ora in questo evento una compartecipazione e una condivisione da parte della collettività, che nella trasfigurazione simbolica del soldato sconosciuto, tumulato il 4 novembre 1921 (terzo anniversario della vittoria) sotto la statua della Dea Roma, riconosce valori, virtù, memorie, significati. Si calcola che oltre trecentomila persone siano accorse quel giorno, da ogni parte d’Italia, e che più di un milione di italiani fossero presenti a Roma per onorare la memoria del Caduto. Contemporaneamente le altre dieci bare di ignoti soldati vengono sepolte ad Aquileia nel Cimitero degli Eroi, proprio dietro alla Basilica.

[ENG] On 2 November, All Souls’ Day, the convoy rolled into Termini Station in Rome received by King Victor Emmanuel III and the highest military and civil authorities. This historically significant documentary chronicles the apotheosis of a religion of patriotism, which had developed starting from the beginning of the nineteenth century (mainly at a literary level) and culminated with the collective involvement and sharing in the symbolic transfiguration of the Unknown Soldier, hence the recognition of values, virtues, remembrances, and meanings. The hero was entombed on 4 November 1921 (the third anniversary of the victory) below the statue of the goddess Roma It is estimated that more than three hundred thousand people gathered from all over the country, and millions of Italians were present in Rome to honour the Soldier’s remembrance In the same moment, the other ten coffins containing the remains of unknown soldiers were tumulated in Aquileia, just behind the Basilica, in the grounds of the Cemetry of Heroes.

Da Aquileia a Roma Il Centenario del Milite Ignoto

[ITA] Dal 1914 al 1918 il mondo è in guerra. Eserciti e Nazioni si fronteggiano per mare e per terra. Circa 650.000 militari italiani muoiono sui campi di battaglia o negli ospedali delle retrovie. Oltre 200.000 di essi rimangono ignoti e senza sepoltura. Il 28 ottobre 1921, in una cerimonia che si tiene all’interno della Basilica di Aquileia, Maria Bergamas, madre di un fante italiano disperso, sceglie tra undici bare con le salme di soldati non identificati quella del Milite Ignoto. Caricato su un convoglio speciale, il feretro che rappresenta il sacrificio e il patriottismo del popolo in armi parte alla volta di Roma, dove viene tumulato al Vittoriano il 4 novembre. Questo evento è stato documentato dal film del 1921 “Gloria. Apoteosi del soldato ignoto”. La pellicola, nella versione restaurata digitalmente dalla Cineteca del Friuli, è stata proiettata il 27 luglio scorso ad Aquileia nel corso di una serata-evento di cinema muto e musica dal vivo. Il documentario è stato accompagnato dalla nuova colonna sonora del film in musica elettronica eseguita per la prima volta dal vivo; un progetto musicale sostenuto dalla Fondazione Aquileia e realizzato nel 2021 da Aquileia Digital Arts. Questo evento ha dato avvio ad Aquileia alle celebrazioni per il Centenario del Milite Ignoto, che culmineranno il 4 novembre con la cerimonia solenne che si terrà all’Altare della Patria in occasione della Giornata dell’Unità nazionale e delle Forze Armate. A cento anni della traslazione del Milite Ignoto a Roma, Aquileia si è anche trasformata in set cinematografico per le riprese del docu-film “La scelta di Maria” diretto da Francesco Miccichè, che vede come protagonisti Cesare Bocci, Sonia Bergamasco e Alessio Vassallo. Il film andrà in onda il 4 novembre in prima serata su Rai 3 e ripercorre, attraverso ricostruzioni filmiche e repertori d’epoca, la vicenda storica del Milite Ignoto, soffermandosi sugli aspetti umani dei protagonisti. Il docu-film è prodotto da Gloria Giorgianni (Anele) in collaborazione con Rai Cinema, Fondazione Aquileia, Comune di Aquileia e Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, con il patrocinio del Ministero della Difesa e il supporto della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia e PromoTurismoFvg.

Numerose sono le iniziative in programma per il Centenario del Milite Ignoto. Tra tutte spicca il “Treno della Memoria” che partirà dalla stazione di Cervignano del Friuli il 29 ottobre: una riedizione del convoglio speciale che nel 1921 trasportò la salma del soldato da Aquilea a Roma. The Centenary of the Unknown Soldier [ENG] Between 1914 and 1918, war was raging across the world. Armies and nations confronted one another on land and sea. Some 650,000 Italian soldiers perished on the battlefield or in the hospitals behind the front lines, of which over 200,000 were unidentified and had no proper burial. On 28 October 1921, with a solemn ceremony held in the Basilica of Aquileia, Maria Bergamas, the mother of a nameless infantry soldier, chose one among eleven coffins containing the remains of unidentified fallen, as the Unknown Soldier. The coffin, which represented the sacrifice and patriotism of the nation’s people, was ceremonially loaded on a convoy to Rome, where it was entombed in the Vittoriano monument on 4 November. This collective event was documented in a 1921 film titled “Gloria Apoteosi del Soldato Ignoto” (Glory. The Apotheosis of the Unknown Soldier. Masterly restored by Cineteca del Friuli, the documentary was screened on 27 July last summer during a silent cinema with a live music event held in Aquileia. The documentary was accompanied for the first time by a new live electronic music soundtrack. The musical project was conducted by Aquileia Digital Arts in 2021 and supported by Fondazione Aquileia. This event started the Centenary of the Unknown Soldier celebrations in Aquileia that will culminate on 4 November with the solemn ceremony at the Altare della Patria (Altar

One hundred years after the Unknown Soldier was brought to Rome, Aquileia was once again the location of filming for the docu-film “La scelta di Maria” (Mary’s Choice) directed by Francisco Miccichè, featuring Cesare Bocci, Sonia Bergamasco and Alessio Vassallo. The film will be broadcast during prime time on Rai 3 on 4 November. Through careful editing of the original footage and period repertoires, the documentary chronicles the celebrations of the Unknown Soldier, focusing mainly on the human aspects of the protagonists. The film was produced by Gloria Giorgianni (Anele), in collaboration with Rai Cinema, Fondazione Aquileia, the Municipality of Aquileia and Istituto Luce-Cinecittà with the patronage of the Ministry of Defense and support from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and PromoTurismoFvg. The Centenary of the Unknown Soldier will be marked in many different events, one among many others, the “Treno della Memoria” (Remembrance Train), which will leave the station in Cervignano del Friuli on 29 October as the revival of the convoy that in 1921 transported the coffin of the Unknown Soldier from Aquilea to Rome. Piazza Unità, la Statua della ninfa Thetis Le Ragazze di Trieste

[ITA] Per trascorrere una bella giornata a Trieste ci sentiamo di consigliare una cosa: dimenticare l’automobile. È molto piacevole raggiungere Trieste in treno, assaporando dall’alto del tracciato della linea ferroviaria il panorama mozzafiato della costa giuliana. Insuperabile però è la visuale che si presenta a chi raggiunge la città dal mare. Ogni visita che si rispetti dovrebbe iniziare, o culminare, con piazza Unità. La piazza principale della città si specchia sul golfo, alle sue spalle il Colle di San Giusto, ai lati il Borgo Teresiano e Giuseppino, edificati in epoca austriaca dagli imperatori di cui portano ancora il nome. Su piazza Unità si affacciano gli edifici rappresentativi della città: tra gli altri il Municipio, il palazzo della Giunta Regionale e la Prefettura. Nelle immediate vicinanze troviamo anche un’importante istituzione culturale triestina: il Teatro Verdi, inaugurato

[ENG] In order to spend a pleasant day in Trieste we feel we can suggest one important thing: forget your car. One very pleasant way to reach Trieste is by train and enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast from above. Nevertheless, definitely unequalled is the view you are given approaching the city from the sea. Every trip that is worth the while ought to begin or reach its climax by visiting the Piazza Unità. The main square of the city reflects on the gulf, is backed by the Colle San Giusto hill and flanked by the Borgo Teresiano and Borgo Giuseppino, the two districts built during the period of the Austrian Empire, which bear the names of the Emperors who erected them. Several representative buildings overlook Piazza Unità: among others the Town hall, the Regional Council Building and the Prefecture. Nearby there is an important cultural institution of the city of Trieste: the Verdi Theatre, which opened its doors in 1801, is one of the most ancient opera houses still in active use. Just opposite the theatre, Palazzo Tergesteo, a building connected to Svevo and his life. The imposing mid-nineteenth century building is pierced by a pleasant passageway which connects it to Piazza della Borsa, where two other important buildings face the square: Casa Bartoli, a graceful Libertystyle building and the old Stock Exchange building which is incontrovertibly neoclassical in style. Not to be missed, the old town, which lies just behind and on the right side of Piazza Unità with its narrow alleys whose names are evocative of the trades and family names of the past. Starting from Piazza Cavana you can take Via delle Mura which widens a view across the Roman Tergeste. The recent archaeological excavations and building sites in operation

[ITA] nel 1801, è uno tra i più antichi teatri lirici in attività. Di fronte, Palazzo Tergesteo di sveviana memoria. L’imponente struttura di metà Ottocento è attraversata da una graziosa Galleria che la collega a piazza della Borsa, sulla quale si affacciano due importanti edifici: casa Bartoli, leggiadro edificio liberty, e la vecchia Borsa, inconfondibilmente neoclassica. Da non perdere la città vecchia, che si estende alle spalle di piazza Unità e alla sua destra. Strette e suggestive viuzze portano nomi evocativi di mestieri e famiglie del passato. Da piazza Cavana si consiglia di imboccare via delle Mura che apre uno scorcio sulla romana Tergeste. Lungo il percorso si osservano recenti scavi archeologici e altrettanto recenti interventi di riqualificazione di un’area un tempo degradata. Proseguendo ci si imbatte nell’Arco di Riccardo

Noteworthy are the rose window, the mosaics within the cathedral and the bell tower, which houses the famous bells of San Giusto. Near the Cathedral there is the Roman forum and the San Giusto Castle. The building has recently been renovated and is used as a museum. Strolling downhill simply “wander aimlessly” among the alleys and stairways that crisscross the hill; going down the Via Rota you get a suggestive glimpse of the roofs of the old

[ITA] di epoca romana. Nelle vicinanze due chiese: la romanica San Silvestro e la barocca Santa Maria Maggiore. La sommità del Colle di San Giusto non dista molto. Vale la pena fare un piccolo sforzo in più per raggiungerla. Qui ci aspetta infatti la Cattedrale di San Giusto, mirabile esempio di fusione di diversi edifici. Spiccano il rosone, i mosaici interni e il campanile con le famosissime campane di San Giusto. Vicino alla Cattedrale troviamo il foro romano e il Castello di San Giusto. Ristrutturato di recente, è ora sede museale. Per scendere dal Colle si consiglia di “perdersi” tra le viuzze e le scalinate che si intrecciano ai piedi del colle, per esempio prendendo via Rota da dove si ammirano i suggestivi tetti della vecchia città. Scesi dal colle, ecco il Teatro Romano. Facciamo un salto nel tempo e spostiamoci nel Borgo Teresiano, inconfondibile per la sua struttura ordinata e rego-

lare. Da non perdere le chiese ortodosse di San Nicolò dei Greci sulle rive e di San Spiridione sul Canal Grande. Interessante anche chiesa la neoclassica di Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, che dalla sua posizione invidiabile regala uno sguardo aperto fino al mare. Poco distante, il viale pedonale XX settembre, zona di caffè e gelaterie da cui è facile raggiungere anche il Politeama Rossetti e la splendida sinagoga con il vicino Caffè San Marco. Per gli amanti dell’arte moderna si consiglia il Museo Revoltella, ospitato in parte nella residenza baronale di Pasquale Revoltella. Da non perdere per nessun motivo il Castello di Miramare che, raggiungibile comodamente in autobus o in barca, regala momenti intensi all’insegna dell’arte, della storia e della natura in un contesto paesaggistico assolutamente indimenticabile.

[ENG] town. Once at the foot of the hill, you are met by the Roman Theatre. Making a leap in time we reach the Borgo Teresiano, a district characterised by its regular and tidy layout. Here there are the Orthodox churches of Saint Nicolò dei Greci on the shore and San Spiridione on the Canal Grande. Noteworthy is the Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo church in Neo-classical style from which you can enjoy a spectacular view down to the seafront. A short stroll and you reach the pedestrian avenue XX settembre, a vibrant area where there are many cafés, bars and icecream parlours. From here you are just a stone’s throw away from the Politeama Rossetti theatre and the splendid Synagogue, which is close to the Caffè San Marco. For those who are keen on modern art, visiting the Revoltella Museum which is partly housed in the Baron Pasquale Revoltella residence, is a must do. Miramare Castle should for no reason be missed. It is easily reachable by bus of by boat. By spending some time in the castle and its gardens you can enjoy intense moments amidst art, history, and nature immersed in unforgettable dreamlike landscapes.

Pleasures of Autumn

[ITA] In fondo a un cassetto ho trovato un foglio ingiallito sul quale, molti anni fa, avevo appuntato un resoconto di inizio autunno, quando, da studentessa, partecipare alla vendemmia significava racimolare i soldi per il motorino o per la vacanza con gli amici. Un ricordo che, ne sono certa, è comune a molti di voi. «Sveglia alle prime luci del giorno. Raggiungo l’azienda; qualche nozione su come non farsi male e su come raccogliere l’uva. Dotazione d’ordinanza: guanti, forbici, cassetta e tanta buona volontà. Siamo un piccolo gruppo, arriviamo alla vigna mentre l’umido della notte si sottomette al tiepido sole mattutino. Le oche che pascolano tra i filari sembrano stizzite dalla nostra presenza; ci guardano di sbieco e ci lasciano passare. Inizia la giornata di vendemmia: uno dopo l’altro i grappoli vengono colti. La cassetta si riempie. Passiamo in rassegna un filare dopo l’altro mentre il caldo sulle spalle si fa più intenso. Nell’aria un sommesso chiacchiericcio; un omone intona qualche canzone, ma sono pochi i coristi che lo seguono. Un grappolo mi scivola dalle mani. Lo raccolgo da terra e non credo alle mie narici: sento un intenso profumo di menta. Cosa ci fa la menta, tanta menta, sotto alle viti? La curiosità è forte. Alla prima pausa affianco il fattore e glielo chiedo. Con un sorriso mi spiega che il suolo e tutta la vita che si sviluppa su di esso e al di sotto di esso sono considerati elementi importanti per ottenere prodotti sani e buoni. Anche la menta. Mi fa notare che sto camminando su un terreno soffice: è tale per le tante essenze che vi crescono e perché la terra è ricca

[ENG] At the bottom of a drawer, I found a yellowed-by-age page of my diary where I give an account of my experience as a harvester during my student days. The grape harvest was a way to earn some pocket money to buy a scooter or go on a camping holiday with friends. I am sure I share similar memories with many of my peers out there. «Here I am, up at the crack of dawn. Once I get to the estate, I am given some notions on safety in the vineyard and my grape harvesting tools: gloves, harvest shears, a crate, and lots of elbow grease. Finally, in the company of a small group of harvesters, I reach the vineyard, the moist air of the night rising off the sun-warmed ground. The geese grazing among the vines seem irritated by our presence but let us go through looking at us askew. And so, a day of harvest begins. One by one, we choose and pick the clusters of grapes, slowly filling the crate. From one row of vines to the next, we feel the sunshine getting warmer and warmer. The air is filled with the soft voices of the harvesters’ chitchat; a huge old chap strikes up a folk song, but only a few join in the choir. I inadvertently drop a bunch of grapes, and as I bend down to pick it up, my nostrils catch a scent I was not expecting: an intense note of mint. Why is a plant of mint growing right here among the vines? My curiosity is piqued. As soon as we stop for a break, I approach the vineyard master and ask him for explanations. He smiles and explains that the soil and all that grows and lives on it are considered essential elements in developing a good, healthy product, including mint plants. He points out that the ground we are treading on

Alla fine della vendemmia veniamo tutti invitati alla festa della pigiatura che si tiene nella corte della grande casa colonica. L’aria è vibrante, come è d’uopo nei momenti importanti. Davanti al bianco porticato ci sono tre grandi tini colmi d’uva. Vengono scelte quattro donzelle per ogni tino. Arrotolano i calzoni fin sopra al ginocchio e si lavano. Gli ospiti intonano le canzoni del folklore regionale e le ragazze danno il via alla pigiatura. Più schiacciano l’uva, più affondano nei tini. È tutto uno scalpiccìo, uno schizzo e uno scivolare, tra risate, urli, canti e fischi. La festa alleggerisce la fatica della pestatura.

The air is filled with excitement, as it always is at such important events. There are three wooden tubs filled with grapes standing in front of the whitewashed portico of the vinery. Four young girls are chosen for each tub. First, they roll up their trousers to their knees and wash their feet. Then, the people gather around start singing folk songs, and the girls begin stomping the grapes. As they crush the load of grapes, they sink deeper into the tubs. Stomping, splashing and slipping on the grape skins, the festive ritual goes on amid laughter, music and

[ITA] Le ombre si distendono e arriva il ristoro per tutti i partecipanti. Tra un bicchiere di vino e una cucchiaiata di polenta mi ritrovo a parlare con il titolare dell’azienda agricola. Gli brillano gli occhi mentre mi racconta che nella sua azienda gli ingredienti di un buon vino sono tre, e solo tre: l’uva, il terreno e l’uomo. E che ci vuole grande rispetto da parte dell’uomo per le viti e per il suolo, che a loro volta regalano al vino colore, gusti e note inconfondibili. Mentre nell’aria si diffonde il profumo del mosto, il suo sguardo si fa più serio: Ci vuole grande cura per il vino: va seguito e va lasciato invecchiare. E niente additivi» Per vivere anche oggi quest’esperienza di intenso contatto con la terra e con l’uva prima che il suo nettare si trasformi in vino, è possibile partecipare alle vendemmie di Harvest&Taste, una delle proposte dalla Strada del Vino e dei Sapori del Friuli Venezia Giulia organizzate presso le fattorie didattiche in tutta la regione. Uno dei laboratori che di certo fa rivivere sensazioni che rischiano di andare perdute è la vendemmia alla fattoria didattica Gelindo dei Magredi a Vivaro (www.gelindo.it). Qui anche i bambini diventano protagonisti e dopo la raccolta dei grappoli si divertono come matti a pestare l’uva a piedi scalzi.

The winemaker must tend to the vines and the soil with great respect, and in turn, these will give the wine its colour, flavours and distinctive aromas. The smell of must slowly fills the air, and his expression turns reflective: Making wine requires great care: it must be carefully managed and left to age properly, without additives.» Join in the Harvest&Taste experience, organised by Strada del Vino e dei Sapori del Friuli Venezia Giulia at several learning farms in the countryside all over Friuli Venezia Giulia, to enjoy this grounding experience in contact with the earth and the grapes before their juice is turned into precious wine. The traditional grape harvest is one of the traditions that are at risk of dying out. However, you can still fully experience it at the Gelindo dei Magredi learning farm in Vivaro (www.gelindo.it). Here the little ones become the protagonists of the harvest. After picking the grapes, they will enjoy stomping them with their bare feet.

Sentori di paesaggi e di gusti [ITA] Ogni viaggio ha un lato enogastronomico più o meno marcato; quelli nel Belpaese sempre più spesso si contraddistinguono per la vocazione gourmand. Oggi in Italia, in Europa e in gran parte del mondo la motivazione enogastronomica è quella principale nella scelta di una destinazione. Secondo l’Unwto (United Nations World Tourism Organization - l’Organizzazione Mondiale del Turismo), sarà proprio il turismo enogastronomico il motore della ripartenza dell’intero settore. In questi ultimi due anni il turismo di prossimità ha consolidato il binomio enogastronomia-vacanza. E Alessandra Priante, direttrice per l’Europa dell’Untwo, è sicura che non si tratti di una tendenza ma di una realtà che rimarrà tale anche dopo il Covid. Agricoltura, ruralità e mondo culinario si incrociano fortemente con i temi di identità, economia e cultura. A Scent of Landscapes and Tastes [ENG] Any travel involves enjoying food and wine to some measure, and travelling to the “Belpaese” is becoming more and more celebrated for its gourmand pleasures. Gastronomy and wine are key elements when choosing a destination in Italy as much as in Europe and any other part of the world. According to the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization), gastronomy and wine tourism will be the driving force behind the recovery of the entire tourism industry. In the last two years, proximity tourism has consolidated the combination of enogastronomy and holiday. Alessandra Priante, UNWTO Regional Director for Europe, is convinced this is not merely a trend but a development that is here to stay even after the coronavirus pandemic. Agriculture, rurality and enogastromomy intertwine with identity, economy, culture and heritage. Hence food and wine tourism is a way to learn about different cultures and territories more authentically, gain appreciation of the inner value of heritage, and enhance areas that are less overrun by mass tourism. Italian enotourism is a sector associated with optimism and growth, an industry worth 2.65m euros and one of Italy’s main visiting cards. The natural environment, the landscapes, colours, scents, and peace and quiet are the central factors in the choice of destination for wine tourists. Wine tourists know very well that farm fields are no longer untouched environments but rather areas that humans have skilfully transformed. The rural landscapes we so appreciate and consider “natural” are in actual fact sketched out by human farming. A glass of wine reflects the cultural heritage of a land, the tenacity, the frailties and virtues of the locals and the history behind their culture. Indeed, the wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia are all about the blend of the Mitteleuropean, Mediterranean and Slavic cultures, languages and traditions that, in this region, have carried on an instinctive flair for winemaking which has its roots in Roman times. The wines ageing in oak barrels down in the cellars are also an expression of the various geographical and climatic features of Friuli Venezia Giulia. This vast vineyard lies between the mountains and the sea, crowned by the Alps shielding it from the cold winds blowing from the north and is lapped by the sea and lagoons on the other edge. This land is lightly brushed by the warm, dry winds blowing from the

Negli spazi limitati di questa piccola regione, che si percorre in un paio d’ore di macchina sia guidando dal confine con la Slovenia ad est fino a quello con il Veneto ad ovest, sia che si parta dal mare per arrivare alle montagne, troviamo superfici coperte da vigneti diversi tra loro ma accomunati dal sembrare giardini. Nelle zone pedemontane e in quelle collinari e carsiche a ridosso del confine sloveno, dove la qualità dei prodotti premia le più difficili condizioni di produzione, troviamo filari aggrappati ai versanti e sistemati, ad esempio, a rittochino (ossia seguendo le pendenze) o a girapoggio (perpendicolari alla pendenza); le vigne si dispie-

[ENG] south and whipped by the strong gusts of Bora wind from the east; it enjoys lots of warm sunshine and is replenished by abundant winter and spring rains. Within this small geographic region, which you can cross in a couple of hour’s drive – from the Slovenian border in the east to Veneto in the west, or starting and from the coast travelling to the mountains – there are vast areas covered with various vineyards but so well appointed as to resemble a garden. On the steeper hill slopes and on those of the Karst just next to the Slovenian border – where the quality of the wines is the reward for such difficult conditions – the vineyards literally cling to the slope in a fashion following either right angles to the natural inclined surface or perpendicular to the hill (contour farming). Down below instead, the vineyards spread out over the alluvial plain up to the coast where the salty sea breeze air them, yielding more grapes.

[ENG] Due to the various types of soils and microclimates, nine different DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) areas have been established: in the plain Friuli Annia, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo and Friuli Latisana; Carso on the Karst rocky plateau while and on the hilly areas, Collio and Friuli Colli Orientali; and finally, Friuli with other three interregional DOC areas, Lison-Pramaggiore, delle Venezie and Prosecco. The DOC Colli Orientali then includes the three regional Controlled Designation of Origin Guaranteed (DOCG): Ramandolo, Picolìt and Rosazzo, plus the DOCG Lison. In this pleasantly varied landscape, there are some 1500 wineries that produce a range of exceptional wines, ranging from the whites that are amongst the best in the world and the very particular red wines, yielding some 80 million bottles a year. Sulle tavole di mezzo mondo abbinati ai gustosi e raffinati piatti della gastronomia locale e internazionale, direttamente nelle tante tipiche cantine disseminate sul territorio, o al tavolone di una frasca o di un’osmiza, si possono degustare bianchi regionali preziosi come il Ramandolo e il Picolit, bianchi profumati (come Prosecco, Tocai friulano (ribattezzato “Friulano” dopo una lunga diatriba con i vignerons ungheresi), Verduzzo friulano, Malvasia istriana,

[ITA] Chardonnay, Pinot bianco e grigio, Ribolla, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer aromatico, … ) e robusti rossi locali (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Terrano, Pinot nero, Schioppettino, ...). Non è solo la produzione vinicola ad essere trainante in regione, ma anche l’enoturismo. E proprio agli enoturisti è dedicata una Strada ideale che unisce la produzione vitivinicola e l’agroalimentare d’eccellenza con l’accoglienza e la scoperta di bellezze storiche, architettoniche e naturalistiche: la Strada del Vino e dei Sapori. A disposizione dei visitatori ci sono sei diversi itinerari che riuniscono la grande eterogeneità di culture, nature e prodotti e guidano il turista (ma anche chi vive in Friuli Venezia Giulia) a conoscere i produttori e le loro produzioni dalla montagna alla costa attraverso i colli, la pianura e i vigneti della regione. Sei esperienze di turismo enogastronomico fatto di tradizioni, eccellenze e vita quotidiana. Ma non solo: i produttori vitivinicoli del Friuli Venezia Giulia, Promoturismo FVG e il Movimento Turismo del Vino locale si sono inventati nuove occasioni di assaggio e di visita immersi nella natura rigogliosa dei filari. A seconda delle stagioni, per scoprire le eccellenze enogastronomiche regionali vengono proposti pic-nic in vigna, safari, immersioni, “bagni” e meditazione tra i filari, degustazioni in montagna e in laguna e passeggiate bucoliche tra le vigne. E cantine, distillerie e birrifici diventano anche insoliti palcoscenici di concerti e spettacoli. In the last few decades, the wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia have been widely marketed outside the regional and national borders earning the position as the top products the region presents on the international market thanks to extensive efforts to improve quality. Precious regional whites like Ramandolo or Picolit, whites with great aromas (Prosecco, Friulano or Tocai Friulano, as it was formerly known – a name which was changed after a long dispute with the Hungarian winemakers – Verduzzo Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio, Ribolla, Riesling, Sauvignon, aromatic Traminer) and more robust local red wines (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Terrano, Pinot Nero, Schioppettino) which are now served at the dining tables across the world paired with refined dishes of local and international cuisines as well as at the many wineries scattered around the region, or at the heavy wooden tables of a frasca or osmiza (private farms where the owners serve and sell their local produce and wines in a friendly and relaxed environment). Dalla terra alla cucina [ITA] Quella del Carso è la zona del Friuli Venezia Giulia il cui patrimonio enogastronomico si è conquistato il maggior appeal sui turisti. E molte sono le occasioni per gustare le prelibatezze che questa terra offre. Una di queste è Sapori del Carso – Okusi Krasa, la gustosissima manifestazione che tutela e promuove i sapori della tradizione, la memoria delle ricette tradizionali e i prodotti locali del Carso e nel contempo offre un’indimenticabile esperienza culinaria. L’obiettivo è, come sempre, quello di raccontare - anche a chi viene da lontano - il Carso nel suo complesso, con la storia, la cultura, i sapori, i prodotti e la natura unica. La 20° edizione di Sapori del Carso si terrà dal 22 ottobre al 7 novembre 2021 e avrà come filo conduttore lo sviluppo sostenibile della cucina carsolina. Declinando l’idea “dalla Terra alla cucina”, verrà presentato il patrimonio culinario del territorio e le sue interpretazioni contemporanee come una delle opportunità per lo sviluppo di esperienze sostenibili nel Carso. I ristoratori, le panetterie e pasticcerie aderenti all’iniziativa celebreranno questa ricorrenza con menù e ricette a tema. I prodotti tradizionali locali, rigorosamente carsolini, come

[ENG] The Carso is the district in Friuli Venezia Giulia where the cuisine and food heritage has most appealed to tourists. There are tons of events and occasions where enjoy the produce and delicacies this land has to offer. One very enticing occasion is the Sapori del Carso - Okusi Krasa food festival. The festival is a celebration of traditional food, old folk recipes, and the local produce of the Carso highlands, which promises an unforgettable culinary experience. The goal is, as always, to introduce the Carso plateau to the newcomers in all its quintessence through its particular heritage, culture, flavours, specialities, and distinctive natural surroundings. The 20th edition of Sapori del Carso will take place between 22 October at 7 November 2021, and the central theme will be the sustainable development of the cuisine of the Carso. By following the “from farm to table” concept, the culinary heritage and its contemporary reinterpretations presented at the festival will be an opportunity to offer further sustainable experiences of the Carso district. The restaurants, bakeries and patisseries taking part in the event will be serving menus and delights specially designed for the occasion. A wide range of wines, cheeses, cured meats, extra virgin olive oil and honey, along with unique coffee blends, chocolate and cakes produced in the Karst area, will also be available at the Angolo del prodotto tipico sales points located in the restaurants, cafés and shops adhering to the festival. [ITA] Ci sono luoghi particolarmente legati a determinate stagioni, tanto da divenirne, durante il lento corso del tempo, vere e proprie icone. Scontato forse il moderno connubio estate-spiaggia affollata, piuttosto che inverno-piste da sci, un po’ meno evidente quello più antico tra autunno e frantoio. La Bianchera, Belica in sloveno, è la varietà di olivo che meglio si è adattata al clima rigido e variabile del territorio triestino e istriano. [ITA] stiene, con la sua vitalità estrema, la sua generosità di frutti, la sua robustezza oltre ogni aspettativa, tanto che solo il rigidissimo inverno del 1929 riuscì a minarne la sopravvivenza, parliamo però di temperature che per alcuni giorni non salirono mai al di sopra dei -9°C in città, con la presenza di vento a 150 km/h… Cultivar selezionata da ben prima della conquista romana, la Bianchera trova nell’autunno inoltrato il momento in cui i frutti hanno la giusta maturazione. La raccolta delle olive inizia così a partire dagli ultimi giorni di ottobre e può arrivare fino a fine novembre. I frutti vengono subito conferiti al

It is grown for its extreme vitality, generosity of fruit, and its robustness beyond any expectation – only the unsurpassed harsh winter season of 1929 actually made its survival difficult. Still, we are talking about temperatures that for days never rose above minus nine degrees Celsius and winds that gusted up to 150 km/h… For the Bianchera, a cultivar selected long before the Roman conquest, late autumn is the time when its fruits are ripe at their best potential. Olive picking begins at the end of October and continues through to the end of November. Once the olives are picked, they are taken to the mill for pressing. The oil that runs off the press is clear and fragrant, and in the words of the experts, low in acidity and rich in polyphenols; it has intense fruitiness and a distinct bitter-spicy character with herbaceous notes of raw artichoke. It is an integral ingredient of the local cuisine and was the backbone ingredient of the very popular garum, also produced in many factories along the coast from the Timavo river to Pula and destined for the tables of the ancient Romans, and earlier still, the Greeks. Rich and poor dishes that developed out of peasant origins or dishes that are the expression of continental cuisine, inspired by local ingredients that enhance their roots, in many cases have become, in a manner of speaking, the calling card that Trieste and its hinterland present outside. Although only a few dishes have been chosen to represent the Triestine traditional cuisine in modern iconography,

Anche se l’iconografia moderna ha scelto solo pochi piatti da ricondurre alla tradizione triestina, in realtà esistono una ricchezza e una varietà di ricette davvero importanti. Le contaminazioni culturali non si contano, come la varietà di ingredienti richiesti, autoctoni o meno, o le interpretazioni più o meno familiari, ma l’insieme armonizzato da scelte razionali, porta alla creazione di una dieta variata e completa. In un famosissimo libro di cucina triestina del 1927 e recentemente ristampato, Maria Stelvio raccolse quasi 1200 ricette che andavano dalla preparazione dei grassi lavorati alla produzione dei liquori fatti in casa. Sfogliandolo si notano molte preparazioni sicuramente superate dai tempi e dalla disponibilità di prodotti industriali, ma anche spunti per un nuovo sperimentare culinario nel segno della riscoperta di antichi sapori. Un antico piatto praticamente scomparso è sicuramente la polenta di grano saraceno, o saresin in dialetto. Questo piatto era in passato comunissimo, tanto da finire

[ITA] anche nelle leggende carsiche: pare che lo škrat, un folletto burlone che vive nelle grotte, trascorra il proprio tempo mangiando in continuazione questa polenta da una scodella di coccio. Per questo non bisogna mai buttare sassi nelle grotte: se si colpisse la scodella dello škrat, egli si adirerebbe, rapendo il colpevole, del quale non si saprebbe mai più nulla. Torniamo al grano saraceno: è in realtà un legume, la cui pianta dalla crescita rustica si adatta bene alle condizioni sfavorevoli del Carso. Si può utilizzare direttamente in seme in ottime zuppe, o sotto forma di farina in altre preparazioni, tra cui la famosa polenta. Ci sono molte cucine regionali italiane che lo utilizzano in piatti tipici, e nella vicina Slovenia è presente in molte ricette tradizionali. Grazie alle moderne discipline alimentari prive di ingredienti di origine animale è stato praticamente riscoperto per innumerevoli preparazioni, e lo si trova ormai con relativa facilità anche nella grande distribuzione.

[ENG] some exciting hints to experiment when preparing dishes that accent ancient flavours. An ancient food that had almost disappeared is buckwheat polenta or polenta de sarasin, as it is called in the local dialect. In the past, this food was so common as to be often mentioned in the legends of the Triestine Carso: the Škrat, a mischievous sprite who dwells in the karst caves, spends most of his time enjoying his polenta, eating it out of a crock bowl. Never through a stone down a karst crevice, because if it lands in the Škrat’s bowl, he gets furious and kidnaps the poor wrongdoer, who disappears never to be found again. But, let’s go back to the buckwheat: it has nothing to do with wheat, as it is actually a rapid-growing rustic legume that well adapts to the unfavourable conditions of the Carso. The grain works wonderfully in soups, while the flour can be used in many recipes, among which the locally most common, polenta. The local cuisines of several regions in Italy

[ENG] use buckwheat as an ingredient in their typical dishes, as do many traditional recipes of nearby Slovenia. Because of contemporary no-animal-product food disciplines, buckwheat has been brought back to popularity and can now quite easily be found on the shelves of our supermarkets. Autumn also stands for the grape harvest. The areas around Trieste have always been planted with vineyards, often interspersed with olive trees at the end of the vine rows. Each farm family would produce their own wine, called domacio from the Slovenian domaci, “homemade, local” – without bothering too much about which variety of grapes went into the wine. And even though the final result was not always up to expectations, domacio became the synonym of a genuine product. Some native varieties, such as Vitovska, Malvasia Istriana, Terrano del Carso – a variety of Refosco dal penduncolo rosso – and Glera; a variety which was “exported” to Veneto giving origin to Prosecco, have gained particular attention. This well-known sparkling white owes its name to the sun-drenched terraced karst hills that gently degrade southwards into the Adriatic Sea, where it was selected and grown in ancient ages. We have only mentioned a couple of varieties, and perhaps those that are more widely recognised. However, many pas-

Da sempre i dintorni di Trieste sono stati coltivati a vigne, spesso in coabitazione con gli ulivi, posti a dimora all’inizio e alla fine dei filari di viti. Ogni casa contadina tradizionalmente produceva il suo vino di casa, chiamato domacio dallo sloveno domače - “casereccio, nostrano”- senza troppo badare al tipo di uva che veniva usata, e non sempre il risultato era all’altezza delle aspettative, ma nonostante ciò il vino domacio divenne sinonimo di genuinità. Ma l’alto valore delle piantagioni permise in tempi relativi recenti la valorizzazione di vitigni autoctoni, quali la Vitovska, la Malvasia Istriana, il Terrano del Carso, varietà di Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, la Glera, che “esportata” in veneto ha dato origine al Prosecco, vino frizzante omonimo del paese carsico nei cui terrazzamenti esposti a Sud e degradanti nell’Adriatico è stata selezionata e coltivata in epoche davvero remote.

[ITA] Ne abbiamo citati solo alcuni, forse i più famosi, ma il solerte ed appassionato lavoro dei vignaioli di Trieste e del Carso sta riportando in vita sapori che sembravano scomparsi, e che in futuro potranno venir apprezzati anche da tutti i buongustai. E dopo la produzione del vino, nell’economia contadina in cui nulla viene sprecato, ecco comparire le grappe, un tempo distillate in casa, la cui produzione adesso è disciplinata e controllata da leggi e regolamenti a tutela della qualità del prodotto finale. Nei rioni e nelle frazioni periferiche a spiccata vocazione agricola, il tempo d’autunno aveva i profumi del mosto prima, delle vinacce messe ad essiccare poi, quindi del fuoco di legna che riscaldava gli alambicchi da cui, in un tripudio di essenze, goccia dopo goccia, la grappa, trapa in dialetto triestino, scendeva ormai distillata. E con l’avvento delle stagioni fredde, le campagne assumevano l’aspetto mesto della terra incolta e già rivoltata, mentre i falò di stoppie riempivano le serate con i loro fumi acri di resine e fieno. L’autunno è la stagione in cui nei buffet, le tipiche tavole calde triestine, si riaccende la caldaia, l’attrezzo deputato a lessare la mitica porzina, ovvero la coppa di maiale lessata lentamente nel sapore del lauro e appena salata, accompagnata nella cottura da altre carni ed insaccati locali. Un assaggio che non può proprio venir tralasciato. A questo punto, buon appetito!

[ENG] sionate, hardworking winemakers of Trieste and the Carso strive to revive ancient varieties that almost disappeared to be enjoyed again by wine and food lovers. In a rural economy where nothing was to be wasted, farmers would produce homemade grappa from what was left after the production of wine. Nowadays, such production is regulated and controlled by laws and regulations that guarantee the quality of the end product. The rural hinterland autumn days were filled with the heady smell of must followed by that of drying grape pomace. Then finally, the scent of the wood fire burning under the stills mingled with that of the distilled grappa, or trapa as it is called in Triestine dialect, slowly dripping in an explosion of essences. As winter progressed, the fields lay bare and weary, their soils already tilled, while stubble burning would fill the evening air with the pungent smoke of blazing straw and resin. It is in autumn when on the characteristic old-world fastfood counters, locally called buffet, the kettles are on full steam and loaded with porzina, lightly salted pork shoulder slowly boiled in stock and bay leaves, served with pork cutlets and sausage. Definitely a food experience that cannot be missed! Buon appetito! Enjoy!

[ITA] Il Friuli Venezia Giulia raccoglie il territorio che, assieme alle contermini alture slovene e all’area veneta del Piave - Monte Grappa - Altipiani, ha visto le più importanti battaglie della Grande Guerra sul fronte italo-austriaco. Di conseguenza il territorio è uno dei più ricchi, a livello europeo, di testimonianze belliche ancor oggi in parte visitabili: trincee, gallerie, postazioni d’artiglieria, strade, casermaggi e... graffiti. Proprio su quest’ultima tipologia di patrimonio storico-culturale, vogliamo catturare la vostra attenzione. Per “graffiti di guerra” s’intende l’insieme di scritte, incisio-

[ENG] Friuli Venezia Giulia together with the bordering Slovenian highlands and the highlands of the Piave - Monte Grappa - were the theatre of the most important battles on the Italian-Austrian front of the Great War. As a consequence, today, it is one of the most interesting region in Europe for war heritage sites, which include trenches, galleries, gun posts, military roads, barracks furniture and fittings, and ... graffiti. It is on this particularly important record of cultural and historical heritage, that I want draw your attention. “War graffiti” are all the inscriptions, bas-relief scratchings, etchings, gravestones and epigraphs made by the soldiers during the 1915-1918 Conflict. A considerable collection of

In circa trent’anni di ricerca, tra l’alta montagna e il Carso ne sono emerse migliaia e ancora oggi se ne reperiscono di sconosciute. Italiane e austro-ungariche, germaniche, inglesi e francesi, queste epigrafi - importantissime per il loro significato storico - sono elementi che ci portano le voci dei milioni di soldati europei che un secolo fa si confrontarono nelle regioni nord-orientali d’Italia. Molti graffiti presentano un taglio ufficiale (segnalano reparti e date, commemorano conquiste, eroi e sepolture), altri, spontaneamente incisi da ufficiali e soldati sulla roccia o nel cemento delle trincee, comunicano nomi, pensieri, provenienze, auspici. Gli esempi scorrono dal Sempre avanti Savoia! leggibile in una cavernetta sopra Vermegliano sul Carso al Maledizione e vendetta al tradimento nemico echeggiante dalla base di una ex teleferica militare austro-ungarica poco lontano da Passo Pramollo, dai ripetuti W la pace (che potevano procurare, all’autore, sanzioni da parte della giustizia militare) ai tanti artistici fregi raffiguranti gli orgogliosi stemmi dei reggimenti che hanno fatto la storia d’Europa.

[ENG] graffiti has been found, in about thirty years of research and explorations on the mountains and the Karst lands, and the process is an ongoing discovery. Whether they are Italian, Austro-Hungarian, German, English or French all these inscriptions – equally historically very important – are a record of the voices of the millions of European soldiers who, a century ago, confronted each other in the north-eastern regions of Italy. Many graffiti have an official character – they bear the name of the unit and a date; they commemorate achievements, heroes and casualties – others, are a spontaneous expression by officers and soldiers who scratched the stones and cement in the trenches leaving there names, thoughts and hopes. Examples range from Sempre avanti Savoia! (an Infantry war cry used before ordering an attack) that can be seen in a cave near Vermegliano on the Karst, to Maledizione e vendetta al tradimento nemico (Damnation and vengeance for traitors) found scratched on the platform of a former Austro-Hungarian military cableway, not far from Passo Pramollo, to the many W la pace (Long live peace), signs, that could get the author of such inscriptions in big trouble with the

[ITA] Itinerari di visita ai graffiti della Grande Guerra Sebbene parte significativa dei graffiti si conservi al di fuori dei tracciati turistici ed escursionistici, proponiamo alcuni itinerari che conducono presso notevoli e suggestivi elementi epigrafici riconducibili al confitto 1915-1918. Ricordiamo che le epigrafi sono tutelate dalla legislazione nazionale e regionale, donde è penalmente vietato asportarle o danneggiarle. Gli itinerari vanno intrapresi con mezzi adeguati: calzature, abbigliamento, prudenza, attenzione al meteo, scorta d’acqua e cibo, cartografia. E magari con l’accompagnamento di un esperto storico.

Fogliano Redipuglia, Dolina dei Bersaglieri

Forcella Clautana, profetica epigrafe del 1912

[ITA] Presso il Museo, aperto tutto l’anno nei pomeriggi di martedì, giovedì, sabato e domenica (info: www.grandeguerra-ragogna.it), si possono chiedere informazioni sui percorsi e prenotare visite con esperti specializzati sui siti della Grande Guerra. Dopo la visita al museo e al cippo che ospita, dal posteggio imbocchiamo il tracciato - privo di difficoltà - che in circa due ore ci porta sulle Rive del Tagliamento. Seguendo le marcature, s’individuano tre epigrafi austro-ungariche risalenti al 1918 che recano l’indicazione del Corso per Truppe Tecniche della 6a Armata, i cui allievi edificarono le postazioni difensive a guardia dei guadi sul maggior fiume friulano mentre i combattimenti coinvolgevano l’area del Piave.

Forcella Clautana Peculiare è l’itinerario escursionistico che ci porta sulla Forcella Clautana, al limitare dei comuni di Claut e Tramonti di Sopra, nelle Dolomiti Friulane. Partiamo in automobile da Claut e, percorrendo tutta la Val Cellina, ci dirigiamo al posteggio sito poco prima di Casera Casavento. In quel di Lesis attraversiamo un ponte risalente al 1911 con il fregio degli Alpini e lo Stellone d’Italia. Da Casera Casavento, seguendo a piedi l’antica carreggiata, in un’ora e mezza di salita raggiungiamo l’alto valico. Qui, un’iscrizione scolpita nel 1912 dall’8° Alpini recita: Ove in queste valli grido di guerra risuoni, su questa via dagli alpini dischiusa, si alzi il canto della Vittoria. Alla luce della battaglia del 7 novembre 1917, quando il Tenente Erwin Rommel qui subì (per sua stessa ammissione) la propria prima sconfitta in un assalto, sorprende il carattere profetico rivelato da questi versi giunti fino a noi.

Monte Sei Busi, Artistica epigrafe dei Cavalleggeri

After visiting the museum and the memorial stone located just outside, take the path that leads to the Tagliamento riverbanks after an easy 2-hour walk. Follow the signs on the path which indicate three Austro-Hungarian inscriptions of 1918 showing the name of the Engineering Troop Course of the 6th Army, whose trainees built the defence posts guarding the river fords of the main Friulan river while the battles raged on the Piave River battlefields.

In light of the outcomes of the battle of 7 November 1917, when the Lieutenant Erwin Rommel endured (by his own admission) his first defeat in an assault action, the words of the inscription sound rather prophetical. Monte Sei Busi If there is one site that bears testimony to the Great War through its many inscriptions, that is Monte Sei Busi on the Carso above Redipuglia, the infamous grounds of the first six Battles of the Isonzo (June 1915 - August 1916).

Forcella Clautana The itinerary that leads to Forcella Clautana, on the edges of Claut and Tramonti di Sopra in the Friulian Dolomites, is quite a peculiar one. Leaving Claut behind, we drive along the whole Val Cellina valley and park our car just before reaching Casera Casavento. At Lesis we cross a bridge dating back to 1911 and which bears the coat of arms of the Alpine Troops and the Italian emblem, which comprises a five-pointed star. From Casera Casavento, we hike up the dirt trail and reach the high-pass. Here, we can see an inscription carved in 1912 by the 8th Regiment of the Alpine Troops. Monte Sei Busi, Trincea Giraud, raffigurazione inneggiante alla pace

[ITA] Monte Sei Busi Se c’è una collina davvero ricca d’iscrizioni della Grande Guerra, questa è il Monte Sei Busi sul Carso sovrastante Redipuglia, famigerato e leggendario scenario delle prime sei battaglie dell’Isonzo (giugno 1915 - agosto 1916). L’itinerario, che non propone dislivelli rilevanti e in una sua prima parte si svolge entro un ben curato circuito storico all’aperto, parte dal posteggio dell’area della Dolina dei Bersaglieri (nota storicamente come dei Cinquecento). Lungo il circuito tematico tocchiamo diverse doline, tra cui la maggiore, quella, appunto, dei Cinquecento, che ospita i resti di un posto di medicazione dove si possono individuare alcune preziose testimonianze come la targa con i nominativi dei medici, un fregio reggimentale dei bersaglieri e il masso epigrafato che vigilava, unitamente ad un’alta croce sormontata dalla testa di Cristo, una grande fossa comune. Percorrendo il cosiddetto trincerone italiano verso Doberdò, ci imbattiamo in numerosi graffiti italiani, tra i quali i reiterati auspici “W la Pace” e alcune singolari testimonianze non prive di gusto artistico, opere di guerra dei cavalleggeri appiedati e delle unità di fanteria. [ENG] The itinerary starts from the parking area of the Dolina dei Bersaglieri (also known as the Dolina dei Cinquecento). It takes visitors through a first very well-appointed open-air historical museum area before leading into a more natural karst landscape. The themed itinerary touches various doline, funnel-shaped basins typical of karstic regions, among which the largest is the Dolina dei Cinquecento. It bears the traces of a field hospital where some precious evidence can still be found, including a plaque with the name of the medical doctors, the insignia of the Bersaglieri regiments, the memorial stone and a statue of Jesus Christ on a tall cross overlooking a large mass grave. Walking through the so-called trincerone, the large Italian trench leading towards Doberdò, you can spot many graffiti made by the Italian Cavalry and Infantry soldiers. There are quite a few hopeful “W la Pace” (long live peace) and other singular graffiti, which are also artistically interesting. The Austro-German offensive of Caporetto took shape, between the 24th and 27th October 1917, in this very area, forcing the Italian army to retreat from Friuli.

Da Cividale partiamo in macchina alla volta del museo all’aperto della Grande Guerra del Kolovrat e di quattro eccezionali fontane del 1916 con epigrafi: due a Biacis (Pulfero), una delle quali propone in chiave satirica i volti dei sovrani degli Imperi Centrali, una a Peternel (Drenchia) e una a Monte La Cima (Pulfero) dedicata al re Vittorio Emanuele. Giunti a Passo Solarie, posteggiamo le auto e visitiamo il sovrastante museo, sconfinando in territorio sloveno. Rientrando a Cividale sostiamo a Blàsin (Savogna), per cercare l’affresco a tema religioso dipinto dai soldati, e poco prima di Azzida, dove il cippo della Brigata Sassari recita: Qui attendò il più bel battaglione del mondo. [ITA] Linea dei Plans in Val Dogna Sulle cime della Val Dogna durante la Grande Guerra i soldati degli opposti schieramenti si affrontarono per oltre due anni, mantenendo le posizioni su cime superiori ai 2000 metri anche nelle rigidissime stagioni invernali. Un complesso fortificato facilmente visitabile che conserva molteplici graffiti è la Linea fortificata dei Plans, che si trova ben segnalata nella parte alta della vallata, e in particolare il possente trinceramento corazzato italiano lungo la Costa Brusinizze.

Lungo la mulattiera di salita al Freikofel - Pal Grande

[ENG] hikers. Along the military mule tracks to Casera Pal Grande di Sotto you can see one of the most touching graffiti: Mamma ritornerò (Mother, I will return). These words were scratched on a rock by a foot soldier of the Catania Brigade. Climbing up the difficult Selletta Freikofel crest up to the top at 1757 metres asl, we find ourselves where the opposite front lines were only about ten metres from one another. Here, there are many, many graffiti. One in particular, shows the profile of an Alpine soldier carved in the rock. The summit also features a range of inscriptions, among which the pisciatoio (urinal). The Austrian slopes of the mountain are difficult to reach because of the vegetation, there are however, some interesting graffiti made by Carinthian infantrymen.

[ITA] località Laghetti. Questo itinerario riservato a escursionisti allenati ed esperti. Lungo la mulattiera di guerra per Casera Pal Grande di Sotto emerge uno dei più toccanti graffiti conosciuti: Mamma ritornerò sono le parole incise sulla roccia da un fante della Brigata Catania. Risalendo l’accidentata cresta della Selletta Freikofel sino alla vetta quota 1757 m, percorriamo un luogo in cui le opposte linee si fronteggiavano a qualche decina di metri e in cui numerosi sono i graffiti, come quello dell’alpino decorato e immortalato nella roccia. La vetta riserva un catalogo assai ampio e vario d’iscrizioni, tra cui spicca la singolare individuazione del pisciatoio. Il versante austriaco del monte è meno facile da visitare a causa della vegetazione, tuttavia non mancano interessanti testimonianze, riferite soprattutto ai fanti carinziani.
