pius welcome
O
n May 22, we welcomed 264 graduates to the rank of alumni. Once again, I am amazed by our incredible students! These young men and women, the 60th graduating class from Pius X, excelled in countless ways. Over 95% of these graduates are enrolled in higher education, 50 students earned a 30 or higher on the ACT and two students earned perfect ACT scores. Two students received U.S. Military Academy appointments and 26 students earned Regents Scholarships. Our Academic Decathlon team won state and placed 5th in the nation. Extra-curricular activities flourished as well with our speech team placing 6th at the state speech contest, the highest in Pius X history. Three female students qualified for the national speech contest and one placed third in the nation in Expository Speech! Our girls swim and dive team also made Pius X history with its highest finish in history, third at state. Our students excel in academics and activities, use their talents to the fullest, share their faith, help those in need, and strive to find God’s path. You have every reason to be very proud of them and proud of Pius X. I also want to congratulate Ray Forycki who is retiring from 30 years of teaching history and coaching. Ray has been the head boys basketball coach since 1994, and ended his head coaching career with a record of 301-164. Ray has always been one of Pius X’s best and most loved teachers and coaches. He will be truly missed in the classroom and on the court. Sister Patricia Ann Hanus, M.S., the Pius X registrar for the last 22 years, is also retiring. Sr. Patricia Ann’s incredible attention to detail made her a great fit in her position, helping countless colleges receive accurate information about our great students. Three other teachers, Annette Kunzman (11 years), Jeannie Imler (9 years), and Sandi Sullivan (9 years), are also retiring this May. These wonderful educators have been a great blessing to Pius X, and I wish them the best as they begin new chapters in their lives.
BOLT 2016: “Unveil the Potential” was another joyous and successful evening, netting more than $280,000 for Pius X and our Booster Club. The proceeds will be used to re-tile several hallways which still have the original flooring from 1956, re-carpet and renovate several classrooms, and purchase student desks, equipment and furniture for our growing student population. Thank you to Deb Schulte and the BOLT executive committee for their leadership. I also thank the hundreds of volunteers and donors who each year step up to make this event successful and incredible. It is a true testament to the tremendous support of Pius X High School. Next year, our enrollment will be around 1,275 students, up 50 students from this year. It is wonderful…we are bursting with faith. Pius X has purchased two portable classrooms (each portable has two classrooms). The portables will be located to the east of the school, and will be ready when classes begin in August. The portables are temporary. Since the diocese is in the midst of the Joy of the Gospel Campaign and for other reasons, Bishop Conley and his advisors do not feel the timing is right to have a formal campaign. While no decision has been made on which teachers will use the portables, administration is working to find the best solution for our students and teachers. On May 26th, Pius X participated in the 5th annual Give To Lincoln Day. So many people support Pius X on this day of giving throughout our city. Final numbers are being tallied and will be reported via our website and through e-mail. The funds raised will be used to recruit and retain great teachers and purchase and furnish the portable classrooms. Thank you for your support. One last incredible blessing that we must celebrate: two alumni have been ordained priests and four alumni have been ordained as deacons this month! Fathers Chris Eckrich ’08 and James Morin ’08 were ordained priests for the Diocese of Lincoln on May 28. Tim Danek ’07, Jason Doher ’05, Cole Kennett ’09, and Andrew Litt ’09 were ordained transitional deacons for Lincoln on May 27. Please pray for these young men of God. Thank you for your prayers and support for Pius X High School. May your summer bring joyful times with family, relaxation and rejuvenation! Let us continue to pray for one another! Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Rev. James J. Meysenburg, Chief Administrative Officer

This is the second in a 3-part series on the history of Catholic education in the city of Lincoln in celebration of 60 years of Pius X High School .
School curriculum at both the Academy of the Holy Child and St. Theresa (pictured) extended through the primary grades into some advanced (middle school) classwork. Bishop Bonacum implemented high school level curriculum for females within a few years of opening St. Theresa. This led to the first Catholic school graduation in Lincoln in 1897.

1912
After a decade of female graduations, a group of boys petitioned Bishop Bonacum and St. Theresa asking for the implementation of a high school curriculum for boys. The petition passed in 1912.

About five years after a boys curriculum was added at St. Theresa’s, the parish community approached Bishop Bonacum again, this time with a motion that St. Theresa Pro-Cathedral respond to the growing Lincoln community of students attending from various parishes and reflect solidarity within the Catholic community. The motion to change the school name passed and the Class of 1917 received diplomas that stated they had graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School.

Bonacum Institute
As Lincoln continued to grow during the early part of the 20th century, Cathedral High became over-crowded. Bishop Kucera and the parishes of Lincoln proposed the construction of a new central Catholic High School. After a study of locations and the growth of Lincoln through the 1920s, Bishop Kucera secured initial funds from the Lincoln Trust Company to purchase land near 20th and J Street. The building would be named for Bishop Thomas Bonacum, who not only served as the first Bishop of Lincoln, but had championed the development of Catholic education throughout the Diocese of Lincoln. Construction of the Bonacum Institute began in 1931 with a building budget of $300,000 and a capacity of 500 students. Even with the Great Depression weighing heavily on both the American and Lincoln economy, Bishop Kucera pushed forward believing the school would still open in the fall of 1932. Before the dream could be realized, the Lincoln Trust Company failed and 1932 came to an end along with the dream of the Bonacum Institute. The land and building remained unused until 1941 when it was sold to Lincoln Public Schools. The building became part of the property of Lincoln High School and is still in use today.
Students and classes moved into the new Cathedral High property on 15th and K Street on March 13, 1949.
1949
After the failure of the Bonacum Institute, Bishop Kucera made another attempt to construct a central Catholic high school. This time he intended to sell the Cathedral building at 13th and M in order to purchase land at 35th and Sheridan. The parishes of Lincoln voted against this proposal in 1946, stating that Sheridan Boulevard was not a central enough location. An understandably frustrated Kucera responded that the parishes would need to see to their own educational needs. Most parish communities responded by adding 9th grade curriculum to their local elementary schools.
1946
1948
On August 23, 1948, Bishop Kucera and the Diocese of Lincoln signed a 99 year lease with the Lincoln Telephone Company for use of the property known as St. Theresa Pro-Cathedral (13th & M).
1949
Six short days later on March 19, 1949, the former Cathedral High School erupted in flames. Investigators attributed the fire to either vagrants or vandals who tussled with a vending machine within the old school.

National Honor Society Members Inducted; Addressed by Pius X Alumnus by Deb Hoge
The 31st class of National Honor Society members was inducted at Pius X High School on Monday evening, Feb. 15. The convocation ceremony honors the top scholars and leaders of the school for their dedication to and exemplification of the four National Honor Society (NHS) pillars: character, service, leadership, and scholarship. As the largest student organization at Pius X, more than 300 young adults participate in NHS. “Although all four pillars are important, the main emphasis of the Pius X Chapter is service and leadership,” noted Tom Seib, Pius X Social Studies instructor and NHS sponsor. Seib made special note of the impressive list of community service and number of hours completed by NHS members. “Our students volunteered at a large variety of organizations, from Matt Talbot Kitchen to Autism Awareness to the Lincoln City Library and the Zoo. They also volunteered at their parishes, at Pius X, City Impact, hospitals, Catholic Social Services, YMCA youth sports, and many more,” said Seib. “In all, our students completed well over 2,000 hours of service in the Lincoln community.” NHS members also provide outstanding leadership for the Pius X student body. Seib noted that junior and senior NHS members were involved in 26 clubs, 15 sports, and 8 performing groups during the first semester of the school year. Regent Scholarship Winners Regent Scholarships are awarded to top academic seniors in the state of Nebraska who will be attending one of the University of Nebraska colleges. This year Pius X is proud to announce that 26 seniors received Regent Scholarships. The scholarship is valued at full tuition for up to 135 credit hours or the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever occurs first. This year’s Regent Scholarships recipients include: (l-r, front) Maresa Searls, Jacquelyn Wright, April Kruse, Liam Kruse, Catherine Krueger, Rose Kotopka, Rylee Sukup, Reagan Scott, (l-r, back) Jared Yost, Scott Allder, Alexis Chapelle, Nathan Asselin, Nicholas Dean, David Tines, and Fiona Fitzgerald. Not pictured: Savannah Hanus, Rylie O’Meara, Broderick Rolfes, Independence Talken, Whitney Tran, Sydney Bonta, Phuong Bui, Rachel Duden, Alex Fish, Willa Koenig, and Matthew Pham.
Seth noted that students may choose from a wide variety of vocations, “but whatever gifts you have, it is not about your own success and enjoyment. It is about laying them down at the feet of Christ by putting them to use for the good of others.” He also encouraged students to “ask God to open the doors He wants opened” and to lead you to use scholarship, character, and service to mend the world around us. With too many examples of bad leadership in our world, Seth encouraged students to “commit yourself to a study of leadership throughout your life…Become as good of a leader as you can be, which is precisely what the world needs of you.” He also noted that leadership is about relating to others. “Everyone has the capacity to lead and influence others.” As he concluded, Seth explained that “your gifts are not about you. God does not care what you do as long as you are seeking to use your gifts to rebuild His kingdom.” National Honor Society is open to all Pius X students in grades 10-12 who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher and meet the by-law requirements of scholarship, character, service and leadership. The NHS officers for 2015-16 were Anna Stuchlik, president; Henry Jaros, vice president; Independence Talken, secretary; Liam Kruse, treasurer; Reagan Scott, senior; Clare Morehouse, junior; and Kristie Le, sophomore.

Coaching Changes Announced; Alumni and Long-Time Assistants Picked to Lead Thunderbolts by Deb Hoge
Coaching changes are not a common experience at Pius X High School, especially for football and boys basketball. Both of these programs, along with boys soccer and softball will have new leadership for the next school year. In the school’s 60 year history only two coaches - Vince Aldrich and Tim Aylward ’69 - have led the Thunderbolt football team. In the past 30 years only two men Tom Seib and Ray Forycki - have coached the boys basketball team. Alumnus to Lead Football Program Ryan Kearney ’98 has been named the new head football coach of the Thunderbolts. “I am honored and humbled to be given this opportunity by God to serve Pius X,” noted Kearney. “I am excited to continue the outstanding tradition, which was established by Vince Aldrich and continued by Tim Aylward, of helping young men use the sport of football to grow within the core values of Pius X.”
Kearney played for the Thunderbolts during the 1990s and was a member of the 1997 state championship team. He has also served as an assistant to Aylward since 2004, starting as an assistant position coach before moving to coaching linebackers and tight ends. Kearney was named defensive coordinator in 2006. Assistant Coach Takes Over Immediately following Forycki’s retirement announcement at a team meeting, Athletic Director Tim Aylward promptly named long-time assistant coach Brian Spicka the new head coach. “I am very excited to be succeeding Coach Forycki as head coach of the Pius X boys basketball team,” Spicka said. “Ray is a great coach, mentor, and above all a tremendous person that has helped me grow as a coach and a person.” Spicka joined Forycki’s staff in 1999 while student teaching at Pius X. He joined the faculty in 2002 and in 2008 was named the assistant varsity coach.
Alumna to Lead Lady Bolts Christy (Kobza) Kruger ’05 will replace Don Rempe, who stepped down last fall after 5 years as coach of the Lady Bolts softball program. Kruger served as a Thunderbolt assistant coach under Rempe, who was an assistant coach three of the four years in which Kruger wore the Green and Gold uniform. As a former Thunderbolt softball player and captain, Kruger was a 4-year letter winner and a part of the 2002 State Championship Team. “It is an honor to have been chosen as the next head softball coach for Pius X,” Coach Kruger commented. “I am very excited for what the future holds for the program and this great group of girls.” Editor’s Note: At press time, a new boys soccer coach had yet to be named. Please watch the Pius X website or follow Pius X on Facebook and Twitter for information when a coach is named.

Coach Forycki Announces Retirement by Deb Hoge
“This is the perfect time for our basketball program,” basketball coach Ray Forycki shares as he announced his retirement. He met with his players after school on May 18 to break the news. “Moving forward we have as much talent and depth as we have ever had, freshman through seniors.” The Thunderbolt basketball program had great success under Forycki’s leadership. Pius X Celebrates Christ’s Global Revelation by PJ Book
The Lion Dance is a cultural tradition in China and many Asian countries and is usually peformed at celebrations.
Junior Joel Enriquez sang a Spanish ballad as part of the multi-cultural celebration.
12 U piusx.net
The word “epiphany” originates from a Greek word meaning “to reveal.” Pius X celebrated its 2016 Epiphany Mass on Wednesday, Jan. 6 amidst the message that Christ revealed himself to all people so that He might be Lord of all people. The presence of a global family of faith exists within the halls of Pius X High School every day. Eighteen different nationalities make up the student populace at Lincoln’s only Catholic high school. Students from each of these nationalities opened the celebration held in the Bishop Flavin gymnasium by carrying the flag of their family origin in a procession to join the American flag. Father Ramon Decaen, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, celebrated Mass alongside five of his brother priests who teach at Pius X. Fr. Ryan Kaup, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish and theology teacher at Pius X, offered the homily. Students read the scriptures and petitions in native languages that included Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Polish while English translations were displayed on a projector. Musical numbers both during and after Mass included hymns sung in Latin, Spanish, and German, as well as a song by the Vietnamese Youth Choir and an African spiritual performed by the Pius X men’s choir. Four additional performances took place following Mass, with each receiving loud applause and approving cheers from the crowd of more than 1,200 students. Each unique performance highlighted entertainment that embraced all cultures with universal languages of song, music, and dance. Members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Vietnamese Parish performed the Lion Dance, a cultural tradition in China and other Asian countries. Five two-person teams danced to percussion instruments in brightly colored, traditional costumes. The Lion Dance is usually performed for celebrations and special occasions. The dance transitioned to a piano solo performed by 2015 Pius X graduate Hyunseok Kim. Kim was an exchange student from Korea, and is currently a freshman at the University of Nebraska where he is studying to be a concert pianist. Current Pius X junior Joel Enriquez sang a Spanish ballad accompanied on guitar by Pius X choir director Todd Krier. The Lincoln Southeast Step Chain concluded the assembly by performing their body music dance routine fueled by percussion generated through clapping, slapping, and stomping. Director of Guidance Jan Frayser and her team organized the celebration and stated that, “It was an awesome celebration of the Epiphany and our rich and wonderful diversity at Pius X.”

Allow Us to Thank You One of my favorite quotes from Mother Teresa is “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”
Pius X Foundation
All of us at Pius X High School and the Pius X Foundation have definitely felt your love and support. You have blessed our faculty and staff and made it possible for more than 1,225 students to receive an outstanding Catholic education. Thank you. Because of your support, Pius X continues to grow. Next year our enrollment is expected to surpass 1,275. That is our highest number of students ever! Thanks to you, each of these students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and discover and pursue their talents and passions in a positive environment where they will also be able to deepen their faith and grow closer to Christ. That is the power and importance of Catholic education. It happens every day in our classrooms, in our chapel, in our gym, through our activities, and in our library and computer labs...all because of you.

And because of your generosity of time, talent, and treasure, we ask you to join us for our annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception on Sunday, Aug. 7. This is a thank you reception featuring Hors d’oeuvres and drinks and an opportunity for you to see first hand the impact of your investment in Catholic education.
Two Ways to Support Pius X A charitable gift annuity may be of interest to you if: 1. You want to be charitable to Pius X High School. 2. You would like to generate a guaranteed income for the rest of your life using an existing asset that has value and may currently be generating a low return on investment (cash, low interest CDs, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement account funds, appreciated assets, depreciated assets, or real estate). 3. You could use a charitable deduction to reduce your income tax. 4. You would like to avoid capital gains taxes.

He will be awarded the Distinguished Stewardship Award. Every day I am reminded that Pius X alumni make a posititive impact on our community and the world around us. This year’s Outstanding Alumna has truly inspired thousands of souls through her vocation of spreading the Catholic faith. Please join us in honoring Dr. Kathy Carey, Class of 1965.
Charitable Gift Annuity
You should find out more about a charitable gift annuity if you like the idea of generating a steady, guaranteed income for the rest of your life, and want to make an immediate gift to support Pius X. If you make regular donations to Pius X, your parish, a Catholic grade school, and other Catholic organizations, you should consider If you are interested in establishing a charitable opening a donor advised fund through the Pius X Foundation. You simply tell us what gifts you want to make, and we will send donation checks and letters on your behalf. Donor advised funds can be started with a minimum $5,000 donation through gifts of stock, bonds, mutual fund shares, real estate, appreciated assets, depreciated assets, and retirement fund distributions. Through proper planning, you may receive significant tax benefits. Once gifts are made on your behalf, you will receive thank you letters in the mail from the organizations that received your donations. Donor Advised Funds are simple and convenient, and are perfect for business owners and individuals who wish to make gifts and receive charitable tax deductions at a preferred time, and wait until later, even years later, to make donations to Catholic organizations and charities of their choice which are in harmony with Catholic morals and teaching. While money is retained in the Donor Advised Fund, it receives a market rate of return. Monthly statements of fund activity are mailed to donors.

Long-time Supporter Honors Pius X with Estate Gift by Deb Hoge
“One of the things Dad said before he died was ‘Sure glad I am Catholic’,” writes his family when sharing their father’s background and love for Pius X. It was a background deeply rooted in the Church and in Catholic education which inspired Bob McCabe to remember the Pius X Foundation and Pius X High School in his estate plan. Bob, the grandson of Irish and French immigrants, grew up in a Catholic household in Omaha. With a rich and diverse culture, Omaha had many ethnic and religious divisions at the time and many Catholics were openly discriminated against. “Dad’s family centered on Holy Name parish and his father was friends with Fr. Flanagan at Boys Town,” the family notes. “Catholics in Omaha stuck together in community, school, and social events.” Growing up in a typical Irish Catholic household with the house full of religious icons and family photos, it was natural that Bob attended Catholic schools. Starting at Holy Name grade school, he went on to attend Campion Jesuit School in
Prairie Du Chien, Wis., and then earned a degree from Creighton University. “One of the many attributes Dad learned from those years was a sense of loyalty - to family and to his religion,” the family recalls. Bob employed the virtuous attributes he learned in Catholic schools and the Catholic community while raising his own family and during his decades as a business leader in the Lincoln. He was dismayed seeing those attributes chipped away by society changing over time. “It was clear to Dad back then, as it is clear now, that his children, all Catholic children, and children from other denominations or no denomination, by attending Catholic schools, might have a chance to learn and carry with them in life the virtuous attributes Catholic schools taught then and teach today,” the family notes, adding that Bob understood supporting a Catholic school system meant supporting Catholic life, just as it did in his younger days. Bob put his faith into action and was always a supporter of Catholic schools. He believed that being Catholic meant
showing loyalty toward the Catholic faith - the true faith, the religion started by Christ himself. “Dad felt that having kids attend and be involved with Catholic schools was the foundation for the Catholic community to come together to offset, not the ethnic and religious discrimination of his past, but the secular society of today,” shares the family, noting that Bob’s priorities in life were faith, family and work, but not always in that order. “The Catholic school system in Lincoln and his parish were a big part of his life,” the family continues. “He believed in the Lincoln Catholic School’s mission to provide affordable, quality Catholic education to any student. Dad believed in Pius X High School and felt strongly a Catholic K-12 education was paramount to formation of Catholic faith.” Bob was connected to Pius X in the same way he felt connected to the Omaha Catholic community when he was young. “Dad understood the financial needs of keeping an organization running. He loyally supported Pius for decades in time, talent and treasure because he believed the Catholic school system is a cornerstone of the Catholic faith. He knew supporting Pius was the right thing to do.”
Scholarship Established for Families Dealing with Cancer by Deb Hoge
To Robb and Courtney Hagen, passing on their faith by providing a Catholic, Christ-centered education for their four children was a blessing that they deeply treasured. After Courtney passed away from cancer on November 5, 2015, an anonymous donor chose to honor her belief in Catholic education and her courageous battle with the disease by establishing a scholarship in her memory. The Courtney Hagen Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a child of a person suffering from cancer or has passed away due to cancer. Catholic education set the foundation for Courtney’s faith formation. During her time at Cedar Catholic High School she met a lifetime friend and religious mentor, Monsignor Cyril Werner. Msgr. Werner had a dramatic impact on Courtney’s faith and her positive outlook on life. He would always close their conversations with “God is good.” Those who

knew Courtney remember her often repeating those very words. Courtney Marie (Heimes) Hagen was born May 15, 1974, to Allen and Cindy (Miller) Heimes. She graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in Hartington, Neb., in 1992. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Dentistry, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene. Courtney married Robb Hagen on October 12, 1996, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. They had four children, Brynn (1999), Ella (2001), Avery (2006), and Willem (2007). Courtney referred to her children as ‘her babies.’ They are a reflection of her. She demonstrated her love and passion for people during her 19 year career as a dental hygienist. Courtney genuinely cared for her patients’ dental health, but also cared deeply for them on a personal
level. Her prayer list was filled with the names of patients, along with many family and friends who needed prayers. Courtney’s faith truly shined when she was diagnosed with spinal cancer in June 2014. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, the cancer was contained until new growths were discovered in June 2015. Courtney restarted treatment, but the cancer spread to her brain. In times of struggle, especially during her cancer battle, Courtney lived her life as a testament to Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Courtney’s incredible courage, radiant spirit, and faith in God never wavered; she considered each and every day a blessing. “The support and prayers that we received during her battle was overwhelming,” Robb reflects. “From the candlelight rosary, to the endless support of the Pius X staff, it’s proof that all involved with Pius X are family.” “We are honored that a scholarship has been created in her memory,” Robb shares. “Courtney touched so many people through her volunteer work, through

The Make-A-Wish Foundation and GodTeens were two examples of her infinite kindness and how her enduring love provided inspiration to embrace your God-given talents. Dianne shared many years granting wishes. She loved bringing great happiness through a wish and she mourned with the family when a child passed away. Dianne proudly celebrated her GodTeen kids’ achievements, always serving as their biggest cheerleader. Dianne also shared her many talents at Blessed Sacrament Church. She led the Home and School Association, many fund raisers, and weekly bingo. At Pius X she volunteered for B.O.L.T. and led the auction team for several years. Dianne’s other favorite pastime involved sitting in the bleachers cheering for the Thunderbolts, especially her nephew and niece, or any student she was privileged to meet. Dianne provided a blueprint for a life of happiness by always sharing love for others. She especially loved helping children and young adults. Her favorite random act of kindness included volunteering at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach and the People’s City Mission, as well as collecting for the needy. Dianne always shied away from recognition, preferring to focus on people in need.

Courtney’s legacy will live on through the lives she touched, especially her family, friends, and those in her community that she so cherished. “Her uplifting attitude was evident through her contagious smile and warm spirit. Courtney simply loved life,” Robb reflects, adding that “her spirit lives on in her children and the many lives she touched.” While her family and friends feel the loss of her physical presence, they pray that this scholarship will inspire others
Fund for Pius X
Your generosity, especially through the Fund for Pius X, keeps Pius X tuition affordable. This year’s goal was to raise $600,000. Of this amount, $200,000 went directly to the operating budget of Pius X High School to improve teacher salaries. The remaining funds stay with the Pius X Foundation to build the endowment and secure the long-term future of Pius X. While this was a hefty goal, more than 2,200 alumni, parents, business community members, and friends of Pius X have given more than $620,000 - surpassing the goal! Thank you for ensuring that Pius X remains financially strong and that a Catholic education is available for generations to come.

2016 Inductees
George O’Boyle – Coach. Coach O’Boyle joined the Pius X community in 1967 and started the cross country program in 1968. In nearly 50 years of service as a coach, teacher, and athletic director, O’Boyle led Pius X to 19 state championships in cross country and track.
Eddie Cripe – Class of 1952. Cripe was an All-City performer
in two sports for Cathedral High School during an era when the school did not participate in any spring sports. Cripe also earned All-State honors for football while guiding the Bluebirds to an undefeated 10-0 season and state championship in six-man football in 1951. Cathedral High also enjoyed tremendous success on the basketball court behind Cripe’s All-City campaigns, earning recognition in the Class B and Class C Catholic basketball tournaments.
Corey Harrington – Class of 1998. Harrington completed
one of the most accomplished three sport careers in Pius X history, earning 1st team All-City and All-State honors in football and baseball while earning 2nd team All-State honors in basketball. He was part of two state championship football teams and made an appearance in the state basketball finals while gaining even more recognition on the baseball field where his career at Pius X concluded while holding numerous program records.
Maura (Dawson) Browning – Class of 1992. Dawson engi-
neered a basketball resume that can be argued as one of the best in Pius X history. She earned 1st Team All-City and All-State honors her junior and senior seasons. She was named the USA Today Nebraska player of the year following an undefeated 1992 season that capped off with a 25-0 record and second straight state championship. Dawson diversified her athletic portfolio by earning All-City honors in track and earning trips to the state track meet in the long jump, 200m, and mile relay.
1992 Girls Basketball. Pius X celebrates the induction of the
1992 girls basketball team as one of the greatest basketball teams in the history of Thunderbolt athletics. The 25-0 campaign of 1992 came via an average per game score of 59-41. Seniors Steph Schug and Maura Dawson each averaged over 14 points per game. The skillful duo was joined by fellow seniors Carmen Easley, Michelle Metzger, Dana Seiler, and Lynde Thelen and underclassmen Maggie Easley, Joanne Groth, Chris Kapler, Cari Ortmeier, Michelle Rowe, and Emily Schultz. The 2016-2017 school year will be the 25th anniversary of the legendary 25-0 season that culminated with a 63-42 state championship over St. Paul.

Cathedral High School Reunion Join us August 6-7, 2016 Dear Cathedral graduates, I am excited to announce that Cathedral High School will continue our annual reunion this summer! Pius X has once again extended an invitation to all Cathedral graduates to attend the All Honor Year Reunion. All Cathedral graduates, Pius X alumni who have already celebrated their 50th class reunion, and all Pius X graduates from years ending in 6 or 1 will be honored. I hope many of you can join your Cathedral classmates at this Reunion honoring both Cathedral and Pius X High School.
Lois (Wolfe) Zoz ’55 and her husband, Frank Zoz
We, Cathedral alums, had our last CHS reunion in 2011. Some of us have not seen each other in a long time, so please make an effort to come and join in a great time together. Come for all events or any part of the weekend. You are also invited to the Friends of Pius X appreciation reception and the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sunday, August 7. This year one of our own CHS alums has been selected for the Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Studnicka Brothers - Jim ’55 and Charles ‘52
I hope to see many of you August 6 and 7. Sincerely, Mary Cripe Oltjenbruns, Cathedral High School, Class of 1950

On March 18-19 the 12th annual Alumni Basketball Tournament - March Madness Thunderbolt Style was held at Pius X High School. An amazing 29 teams, plus a Pius X Boosters team, turned out to play in the tournament, enjoy the friendly competition, and renew friendship on and off the court. Four games were played at a time with both the practice gym and Bishop Flavin gym seeing action. Each alumni team played at least three games with current basketball players and Pius X seniors providing the scorekeeping on each court. Thank you to everyone for your participation, volunteerism, and support. A great crowd was on hand to watch and cheer on our players. The event was another great success as many players and spectators continue to enjoy coming back, participating, watching, and reminiscing. Every player received a tournament t-shirt, provided with help from Tom Gourlay ’86 and Proforma Print & Promotional Images. On Saturday hamburgers and brats were provided for all the players and spectators by Pius X’s wonderful kitchen staff, and after the final games, the teams and their families headed to Dino’s Eastside Bar & Grille for more catching up with their classmates. Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s tournament - March 17-18, 2017.

The Card that Cares.
“The convenience when compared to the traditional SCRIP program. Carrying several different gift cards and dealing with partially used cards with small balances does not appeal to us. The Propelr app makes it very easy to manage the cards, upload funds, and track spending.” - Todd Furasek, Pius X Alumnus and Parishioner at St. John’s
Why do families love Propelr?
“The ability for family members to have more control over giving back with spontaneous spending… We don’t have to plan ahead for who will need to carry which gift cards for gas and groceries, making it a little easier to teach our kids to be mindful of spending in a manner that gives back to the schools we support.”
“Getting the card made me feel like I was giving back, which is big for me; my wife works part time, we have four kids, money is tight. We give as much as we can, but it’s hard. Propelr made us feel like we were “in the club” and part of the stewardship community.” – Jeremy Ekeler, Pius X Alumnus and Parishioner at Cathedral
– Janel Andreasen, Pius X Family and Parishioner at St. Teresa’s
