pius welcome

A

s we celebrate this grace-filled season of Christmas, I pray that you and yours may know the gift of joy and gratitude for all the blessings and treasures in your life. God works so wonderfully in our daily lives. The greatest example of God’s work in a human, tangible way is that He sent his only Son. Jesus was born a vulnerable infant child in a barn, totally dependent on Joseph, Mary and God the Father. Christ knows our struggles in this world and in our spiritual journeys. He walks with us; if we let Him, He carries us. Paul’s letter to the Philippians poignantly reminds me of this. He is with us in our times of rejoicing, when we feel contentment and peace. He is with us, as well, during our most difficult and trying times. He brings a peace that cannot be stolen from us. While incarcerated, mistreated, hungry and lonely in Ephesus, Paul wrote, Brothers and sisters: I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now…Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. These words from Paul at a time when he could have been filled with gloom give us hope and reassurance. If we rejoice in the Lord always, our hearts will be ever filled with His joy, contentment and peace. Then, kindness will reign in our world, anxiety will be put to rest, and prayer will be ever on our lips. Indeed, we offer prayers of thanks as we appreciate Pius X’s largest enrollment ever with 1,277 students. We are bursting with faith and have added four portable classrooms to accommodate these students.

With tuition and fees averaging $1,875 per student, we are one of the best deals for a great Catholic school education in the country. The national average for Catholic High School tuition is more than $10,000. At Pius X, tuition pays less than one-third of the actual cost to educate a student. The remaining two-thirds comes from the generosity of the 18 parish communities that support Pius X and the continuous support that our parents, alumni and friends give through the annual Fund for Pius X, BOLT, and many more opportunities. Pius X continues to thrive as a mission-driven Catholic school. Last year, our seniors had an average ACT score of 24.5, three points higher than the Nebraska average. We have 26 alumni who are currently in seminary or religious formation. I could go on and on, and I am very proud of our students, teachers, parents and families. With a great sense of gratitude, thank you for your generous support of Pius X through your prayers, your works and your giving. May you and your family know how graced you are, regardless of how wonderful or trying life might seem. May you thank our Lord for your blessings and may He allow you to be His light shining for others. I remember you in my daily prayers and in a particular way in my Christmas Masses. Let us continue to pray for one another! Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Rev. James J. Meysenburg, Chief Administrative Officer

Journey Pius X From history documented by P.J. Book

to

The last in a 3-part series on the history of Catholic education in the city of Lincoln in celebration of 60 years of Pius X High School history.

1954

Bishop Louis B. Kucera mailed an invitation to the people of Lincoln’s six Catholic parishes on July 25, 1954. He stated that, “Now the time has come for the Catholics of Lincoln to emulate the builders of nearly seventy years ago and together build another school that will serve posterity for more than half a century.”

The official laying of the cornerstone was held on the afternoon of March 4, 1956 by Bishop Kucera.

1955

Groundbreaking ceremonies (right)took place on October 23, 1955, and marked the realization of a 35-year dream for Catholics in Lincoln.

1956

1956

Construction moved quickly and on October 1, 1956, Pius X opened its doors for the first day of school and greeted 168 students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors). The cost of tuition to attend Pius X was only $100, and the school’s mission statement read: “To Restore All Things in Christ.”

1957 Bishop Kucera officially dedicated Pius X High School on January 27, 1957. The event attracted state and city leaders, including (l-r) Mayor Bennett Martin, Gov. Victor Anderson and State Commissioner of Education Freeman Decker.

The Birth of the BOLT A reflection by Msgr. Ivan Vap

I am the sole survivor of the foursome responsible for the naming of the Pius X mascot, and feel it necessary to put the story into writing. In early September of 1956, the football team unanimously accepted the colors of forest green, gold, and white. Although every creature under the sea, on land, or in the sky had been proposed as a mascot for the newly built Pius X, none seemed appropriate for our new school and we remained without a mascot heading into our first season of football. Due to construction around the school grounds, Coach Aldrich did not schedule a football game for the opening night of that season in 1956. Fr. Dan Kealy, Coach Vince Aldrich, Coach Bill Inbody, and myself drove instead to Columbus to scout St. Bonaventure (now Scotus High School) since we would play them later in the season. While driving northwest we noted the late fall thunderstorm growing in the darkening sky. Our conversation in the car revolved around the lack of a mascot as the storm grew around us. Fr. Kealy was an accomplished pilot, and I was in the process of working towards a pilot license.

1961-67

When classes began in the fall of 1956 construction was far from finished. The north wing (150 hallway) included additional classrooms, a biology lab, library, language labs, and gymnasium lobby. Bishop Casey dedicated the completion of the north addition in September of 1961. The added space allowed for the hiring of additional teachers and the eventual enrollment of the first freshman class in September of 1967.

The meteorological portion of those studies turned our conversation to the skies. Fr. Kealy talked of the tremendous force of nature hidden within a thunderhead, rising thousands of feet into the sky and weighing massive tons. All of a sudden, all four of us focused in on a force of nature that aptly projected the force within the student body of our new school - a Thunderbolt. We sat in the rain in Columbus before returning to Lincoln. I arrived at my residence and found my copy of Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and thumbed to page 1,041 to find the word “Thunderbolt.” The definition stated, “A single discharge of lightning with accompanying thunder.” What a great way to depict the Thunderbolts – a bolt of lightning. And then came the clincher as I read the next definition. “A person or thing likened to lightning in suddenness, effectiveness, and power.” What more could we ask for? I immediately phoned Fr. Kealy and read him what I had found. He called Coach Aldrich and the next day dawned with Pius X officially being the home of the Thunderbolts. The public learned of the decision the next Friday when our football team took the field as the Thunderbolts and defeated Syracuse 20-6. Our scouting trip turned out doubly successful following our defeat of St. Bonaventure later in the season. Early broadcasters often mispronounced our name as “pea-ous ex” until word traveled that we were, in fact, Pius the tenth. Before long, and to this day, we are known across the state as the Bolts.

New Scholarship Serves as Reminder to have the Best Day Ever The Pius X Foundation and Pius X High School extends their gratitude to the family of Lori (Laux) Johnson for the establishment of an endowed scholarship in her name. The Lori Ann (Laux) Johnson ’75 Memorial Scholarship will forever be a lasting legacy to a Pius X alumna who was known for helping others and making them smile in times of trouble. The scholarship, which is now endowed with the Pius X Foundation, will provide a yearly tuition scholarship to a student or students in financial need. Lori Ann (Laux) Johnson was born March 2, 1957 to John and Jean Laux, and was the first of four children. Lori and her three siblings all graduated from Pius X - Lori in 1975, Larry Laux in 1978, Lisa (Laux) Schafers in 1983, and Tammi (Laux) Rea in 1984. Although Lori passed away suddenly

and unexpectedly on May 10, 2014, her legacy of helping people and making them laugh in times of trouble will never be forgotten. She always took the time to listen when friends would call. She would never judge others for their actions, but rather would empathize, support and encourage those that needed a shoulder to lean on. Lori touched the heart of so many people, even strangers she had never met before. Lori lived to help others as Jesus challenged each one of us to do. She would stop and take the time to help someone in need. Whether someone had a problem or just wanted to share some good news, Lori always stopped what she was doing to listen and engage in conversation. Lori loved to travel and see the world, especially taking cruises and admiring the splendor of God’s creation in the mountains and canyons. While at home, she

took pride in using her creative talents to knit blankets, and make Christmas decorations and little crosses made with ribbon. She loved to give out those crosses to people, especially those in need of a piece of God’s reminder that everything will be okay. Lori made sure that grace was said at every meal, even when out having dinner with close friends and family. She took her faith in the Lord seriously and was devoted to her family and husband. She so loved her family, especially her Dad and brother Larry, who were always there for her as role models of how to live life and be kind to others. Lori’s friends and family all remember her in their own ways, but they all agree that Lori provided inspiration, peace and joy to everyone she met and touched. Her unforgettable lasting legacy is what she used to say when ending a call or conversation: “I hope you have the Best Day Ever!” That is all she ever wanted to do: to make people smile and feel good about themselves.

With Faith Everything is Possible, but Not Always Easy Sally Hakel knew who she was, what she wanted out of life, and what was important to her - her faith and her family, especially her children. The Pius X Foundation is proud to announce that Sally’s family – her husband Jim, her children Desirae (2013 Pius X graduate) and Nolan (2015 Pius X graduate), and her sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Dave Smith, along with memorial gifts from hundreds of family and friends – has established a lasting tribute to Sally’s memory, her faith, and the school to which she entrusted her children. The Sally Hakel Memorial Scholarship will provide tuition assistance to a Pius X student(s) with financial need. Sally’s faith was tested many times during her life. The first came at the young age of 19 when she was diagnosed with cancer. She had grown up Lutheran, joining the Catholic church before she and Jim married, and had always believed in God. After her doctor found the cancerous tumor at the base of her brain, she believed “one hundred percent” and adopted the motto that “with faith everything is possible, but not always easy.” There were many more tests of faith: miscarriage, a nonmalignant tumor, a cancer diagnosis for Jim, and the loss of loved ones. Her family writes in a biography memorializing her life: “Sally’s faith never wavered, but grew stronger through each trial, through each loss. It was as though God was slowly preparing her for her own final battle with cancer.”

The final test of faith arrived during the first week of September 2013, six days after Sally’s 55th birthday on September 2. She was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Over the next two and half years, through pain, suffering, sickness, and loss, her spirit never diminished. Her fortitude, her resolve, and especially her faith grew stronger. “Cancer didn’t beat her,” Fr. Kenneth Wehrs declared during his funeral homily for Sally, “because the sicker she got, the stronger and deeper her faith grew.” Like all exceptional mothers, nothing was more important to Sally than the well-being of her children. Sally’s sister wrote: “Her world revolved around Desirae’s and Nolan’s school, church, and sporting events.” Perhaps Nolan provided the most powerful testimony to Sally’s selfless love and devotion to her children. For a school assignment he wrote an essay, entitled “Why Must My Mother Suffer from Cancer?” The answer was twofold: his relationship “with God had suddenly grown stronger than ever” and his family “had grown so much closer since the day of mom’s diagnosis.” In the last paragraph Nolan wrote: “She’s still the happiest woman I know and is back to the way she was, with a little less hair, of course. But my Mom will always be the #1 woman in my life.”

“You can’t be afraid of living, and you can’t be afraid of dying.” Sally once shared these words to Desirae and the words were part of her philosophy of life. She cherished life and lived each day to its fullest, undaunted and unafraid. She carried her faith, her love for her family, and her gusto for life with her as she decided to forgo further chemo treatments and enter in-home hospice in February 2016. Family, friends and co-workers surrounded her for the next two months, caring for her and being inspired by her. One friend and co-worker, Krysti Michl, described spending those days with Sally: “She never once complained about her treatment or the symptoms she was experiencing…Even when she knew the end of her life on earth was near, she didn’t think about herself, but how her departure would impact her family. Her last few weeks on earth were spent preparing her family for life on earth without her. It was never about her, but her care and concern for others.” On Monday, April 18, with Jim, Desirae and Nolan at her side, and armed with her unwavering faith, Sally died as she has lived: with love, dignity and courage – undaunted and unafraid.

Scholarship Honors a Mother’s Life and Her Faith in Christ A newly endowed scholarship honors the memory of a woman who lived for the Lord, especially during her battle with cancer. Her life and her faith in Christ inspired her children to establish the Maureen Helling Memorial Scholarship. The endowed fund, now part of the Pius X Foundation’s permanent assets, will provide an annual tuition scholarship to a student or students with financial need. Maureen Helling was born and raised in Omaha, Neb. One of three children born to Richard and Phyllis Greenberg, Maureen always set the standard for excellence in everything she did, whether in school, fellowship, or raising her children. She attended and graduated from Omaha’s Central High School before

8

moving to Arizona. Missing her family, she moved back to Omaha a few years later to graduate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, get married, and raise a family. From 1991 to 1998, she welcomed four children into the world: Brett, Andrew, Emilee, and Rebecca, with whom she chose to stay at home to raise. After her children were grown, she worked a variety of jobs to which every day she brought a smile, joy and hard work. Her ability to work began to slow when she was diagnosed with cancer. During the next few years, Maureen was nothing but positive, upbeat, and optimistic, even when her series of remissions were

plagued only to have cancer return again. Despite each setback, those that knew her knew Maureen to never give up hope. She always continued to fight no matter how grave the circumstances appeared. On June 29, 2015, Maureen lost her battle to cancer, a battle she fought long and hard. She lived her entire life for the Lord especially in the last few months of her life. Maureen did everything in the name of Christ, her rock and foundation. Whether reading her Bible, praying nightly, or donating time and money to those in need, Maureen lived every day as if it were her last. She made an impact on everyone in whom she came in contact. It was through that impact that her children were inspired to create this scholarship. Maureen’s spirit lives on through this memorial and she will forever help others in their time of need grow closer to the Lord, just as Maureen did so many times during her life.

Pius X Band Scholarship Established A newly endowed scholarship will honor the memory of the first band instructor at Pius X High School. Each year the Phil Murphy Memorial Scholarship will provide tuition assistance to a senior band student with demonstrated financial need. The $10,000 gift to establish the scholarship was made by Phil Murphy’s wife and family, including their children Janet Koerner, Paul Murphy and Jane Manzitto. Phil Murphy’s legacy began with his adoption by his parents at age six. He was raised on a beautiful farm surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins; the family he didn’t know he would ever have. This is where he also met his wife, Florence (Flo) Feller Murphy. His legacy continued with his children (Janet, Paul and Jane), followed by 11 grandchildren. His family considers their father and grandfather to be the first of many generations at Pius X High School, and this year brings the fourth generation with one of his 15 great-grandchildren starting school. He received his Masters in Music Education from the University of Nebraska, and began his teaching career in established music programs at Wymore and York, Neb. In 1960 Fr. Gene Kalin challenged Murphy to launch an instrumental music program at Pius X, the new Catholic high school in Lincoln where Vince Aldrich was the only lay teacher. “I was five years old and grew up in the long halls of Pius as my dad grew a music program from the parish schools starting everyone on tonettes,” his daughter Jane recalls. At that time, the parish schools consisted of St. Teresa, St. John, St. Mary, St. Patrick, Blessed Sacrament, Holy Family(Cathedral of the Risen Christ), and Sacred Heart. Students began playing instruments around 5th grade with Murphy giving private lessons and instructing group ensembles. Eventually middle school bands were added.

In 1964 Murphy was joined by Mike Veak who spent most of his time in the parish schools. This allowed Murphy more time to work with the students at Pius X. “As you can imagine, scheduling and attention to detail was everything. We were all held precisely to this standard, as a student and as a band member,” Jane notes. Phil Murphy’s drive and love of music started with piano lessons shortly after his adoptive parents brought him home to Wisner, Neb. He had been cared for by the fine priests and sisters of St. James Orphanage in Omaha since his birth and now had parents to take over. “Dad had a deep love for his parents and great respect for them. They mentored his developing skill and talent in music,” Jane explains, adding that another mentor was his high school band director, Duane Schultz. “Mr. Schultz was a very positive influence and inspired my dad to pursue a career in music.” Murphy marched in the United States Marine Corp Band, as well as the University of Nebraska Band. All of these experiences formed his drive to produce wonderful musicians and fabulous bands. Early in his time at Pius, Murphy commissioned someone from UNL to write the Pius Fight Song which was memorized by all. Under his leadership, the Pius X Band attended, performed, competed and excelled in many competitions and parades. “Dad was known to

begin and end most concerts with a lively John Phillips Sousa March, which was particularly difficult for us in the clarinet and flute sections.” “Dad worked everyone hard in band, but the reward, his pride of the end result and his constant praise for fine performances made it worth every bit.” His former students would attest to this, especially as many went on to make careers in music as well. Murphy may be most remembered and loved for his Pius Homecoming Lights Out Shows. Performed on the Pius football field, the only lights were the flashlights taped to the left ankle of each marching band member. Murphy was proud of his students, bands and their hard work and accomplishments. Music was his ministry and he devoted himself to his Catholic faith and to help grow Pius X. With God as part of his everyday life, Catholic education was important to Murphy and his wife. “Dad would say being in a Catholic school invites God into everything we did. As a family, we are excited to be a part of this growing, thriving and loving school. And we are especially proud of the instrumental music program that has continued to grow and develop from its inception under Dad’s direction.” “Dad’s greatest legacy is his family!” Jane shares. “And, now, as members of our Dad’s “Murphy Family Legacy,” Mom, Janet, Paul and I would like to extend this legacy to his and our “Pius Family.” Just like the farm community where he was raised, you begin with raw land and a lot of hard work and passion. The result is a beautiful harvest. That was what Pius allowed Dad to do...begin with the raw material to mold and grow a great band program. For his children, Pius allowed him to be with my sister, brother and myself every day and to be our hero!”

Distinguished Steward and Outstanding Alumna Recognized

Msgr. James Dawson was surrounded by family and friends as he was named the 2016 Distinguished Steward.

Dr. Kathy Carey ’65 (center) was presented the Outstanding Alumna award by Michelle Birkel, Director of Development (left) and Kristin (Edwards) Heath ’91, Alumni Director.

The annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception honors the dedication of time, talent and treasure of Pius X benefactors and features the presentation of special awards for exemplary leadership, service and achievement. 2016 graduate and Marilue Becker Scholarship recipient Bradley Moss shared his personal testimony to the more than 200 supporters in attendance: “Many student stories share some common ground with mine, beginning with the fact that an education at Pius X was made possible because of the influence and impact of people who I do not know personally,” Bradley explains. “Many people give generously of their time, talent, and treasure in order to cultivate an environment that welcomes students like me and allows us to flourish.” After attending Lincoln East High School, Bradley transferred to Pius X after joining in his parish’s Godteens program. “The joy, friendship, and deep love of Christ that I witnessed in them prompted me to explore the direction in my life.” “My experience at Pius X will always be unique to me, but to some degree, it shares some common themes,” Bradley comments. “We are part of a community of students, faculty, families, alumni, and benefactors who care about one another.”

Msgr. James Dawson Distinguished Stewardship Msgr. Dawson’s first assignments as a priest were to Holy Family and St. Teresa parishes in Lincoln and St. Cecilia in Hastings. After earning his educational administration degree at Catholic University of America in 1961, he started his long-running role as Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Many new schools began in the diocese during his 29 year tenure. The founding of Villa Marie School for children with special needs remains an accomplishment that Msgr. Dawson holds close to his heart. He served as principal of Pius X from 1959-1961 and in 1964, concurrent with his Diocesan duties, was the Superintendent for one year. During his journey of more than 60 years in the priesthood, his service has included many Diocesan leadership roles and travel to 45 countries, frequently serving as chaplain for a group. For a 2004 story in the Lincoln Journal Star, Msgr. Dawson gave the following summation of his life: “The beautiful thing about being a priest is being able to go into the confessional, hear people’s confessions and then tell people that their sins are forgiven. The sacraments and serving those in need - that’s my life.”

Dr. Kathy Carey ’65 Outstanding Alumna As a Director of Liturgy and as an educator, Dr. Kathy Carey was among the first to bring the theology and practice of the Second Vatican Council to communities around the country and enrich the spiritual lives of countless people. Her work at local, archdiocesan, and national levels has yielded a wealth of joyful celebrations, deep insights, and life-changing experiences in the context of Catholic liturgy. She graduated from the College of St. Mary in 1968 and taught in the Omaha Catholic schools. In 1979, she received the degree of Master of Arts in Theology and Liturgical Studies from St. John’s University and received her PhD in Philosophy and Religion in 2001 from the California Institute of Integral Studies. On both the parish and diocesan levels in Colorado and California and at Marquette University, she created and facilitated worship for children and adults, recruited and prepared ministers of Eucharist and of the Word, developed small faith communities, initiated the RCIA process, and instructed staff and parishioners in every aspect of liturgical life. She also taught World Religions at Colorado State University. In 1986 she was named Director of the Office of Worship, Art and Music for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Her considerable skills were used in sacramental theology, RCIA, and catechetical ministry, serving a diverse cultural community. She was also a member of the Interfaith Committee for the Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. A highlight of her service was her position as Co-director of the Liturgy for the Papal Visit of Pope John Paul II in 1987, a celebration of national importance which St. John Paul himself personally assured her was “beautiful!”

ST. PIUS X

Legacy Society

Your life and your choices have made a positive difference in our world. A planned gift can ensure that your lasting impression and the legacy for which your family, friends and community will remember you also makes a positive impact on our world and our community. You are invited to become a member of the Legacy Society. Established in 2005, the St. Pius X Legacy Society recognizes the generosity of individuals and families who have included Pius X High School/Foundation in their wills or other forms of planned giving. Importantly, planning today for charitable giving upon your death has the potential to provide your family with significant tax and estate benefits. At Pius X, we have witnessed countless ways in which individuals have changed the lives of students through their generosity. Your gift will leave a lasting memory to your family, protect the future of Catholic education for generations to come, and display your commitment to the faith and your desire to see our Catholic faith passed on to future generations. The following members of the St. Pius X Legacy Society have committed themselves to the long-term success of Pius X High School and the Pius X Foundation through a planned or estate gift.
