Pius X students excelled academically and through many extra-curricular activities throughout the school year while keeping Christ at the center of their lives. Highlights of the year included State Championships by many teams, including girls baseketball. Senior Maddie Simon was named the Gatorade Nebraska Girls Basketball Player of the Year, and choir students successfully performed a Madrigal Dinner. The Aca Deca team placed second in division two at Nationals with Philip Hanigan placing 11th overall. Congratulations to all Pius X students on an outstanding year.

The 2014-2015 Pius X High School budget is $6.262 million. Parish assessments are provided by the 14 parishes of the Lincoln Deanery and four parishes from outside the deanery. Parish assessments for the 2014-2015 school year make-up 40.9% of the operating budget.

n May 17, we welcomed 269 graduates to the rank of alumni. Once again, I am amazed by our incredible students. These young men and women made up the 59th graduating class from Pius X and excelled in countless ways. Over 95% of our graduates are enrolled in higher education, over 15% have earned a 30 or higher on the ACT, and 44 students earned Regents Scholarships. Our academic decathlon team won state and placed 2nd at the national competition. Extra-curricular activities flourished as well with girls cross country, girls basketball and baseball winning state championships. Boys tennis and boys cross country teams were the state runner-up. Many of our other activities earned entrance into state tournaments as a team or with individuals. Band, drama and vocal music groups shined in all their performances. I also want to congratulate Jake Moore who is retiring from coaching volleyball after 25 years. He will still be teaching and will continue as assistant athletic director. This year Jake reached 700 career wins and Pius X’s 20th straight State Volleyball appearance. BOLT 2015, “Thirty is not enough,” was another joyous and successful evening. The BOLT event reached an all-time high for Pius X: a total of more than $532,000 was netted that evening. This includes $229,000 from the auction/gala event, $26,000 from direct donations to increase teacher salaries, and $25,000 matched by the Bishop Flavin Fund from the Diocesan “Gospel of Joy” Capital Campaign. A real highlight, particularly for me, was riding a 2014 Harley Davidson Ultra Limited Touring Motorcycle into the gymnasium for the auction! This 103 cubic inch V-twin beauty has all the bells and whistles, and sold for $18,500! A special thank you to Union Bank and Trust for donating this biker’s dream. As if that wasn’t special enough, the morning of BOLT I was contacted by an anonymous donor who committed to matching the net profit from the event. Wow! Thanks to this generous donor, Pius X received another $252,000.
The money raised at BOLT will be used for several capital improvement projects including air-conditioning in the practice/PE gymnasium; completing the rest room renovation project; and continuing to save for large maintenance projects like field turf replacement, track resurfacing, tennis court resurfacing, and parking lot resurfacing. The $51,000 from straight donations and the Bishop Flavin Fund will go directly into teachers salaries for next year and help move Pius X toward our strategic goal of bringing our teachers’ salaries to an average of 90% of LPS. The $252,000 anonymous gift will be used in part for this same purpose and to forward fund our school operations. For the last four years Pius X received a $510,000 grant from an anonymous foundation to keep tuition affordable for everyone and to keep parish assessments low. While the direct grant has expired, Pius X is still committed to keeping tuition affordable for all Catholic families, parish assessments reasonable, and staff salaries just and competitive with our public school counterparts. This anonymous gift will go a long way to help us strategically continue forward with all three of these financial priorities. On May 28th, Pius X participated in the 4th annual Give To Lincoln Day. This one-day, city-wide philanthropic push has been very successful for Pius X, and has helped with important capital improvements. This year the funds will be used toward the three-fold commitment described in the previous paragraph. Thank you to everyone for your support, as we raised more than $225,000. We are also blessed because Pius X had four alumni ordained priests and two ordained deacons this month. Fathers Stephen Graeve ’07, Corey Harrison ’07, Ryan Kaup ’06, and Chris Stoley ’07 were ordained for the Diocese of Lincoln on May 23. Chris Eckrich ’08 was ordained a transitional deacon for Lincoln on May 22, and Brother Innocent (Scott) Montgomery ’03 was ordained a transitional deacon for the CFR Order in New York on May 18. Thank you for your prayers and support for Pius X High School. May your summer bring joyful times with family, relaxation, and rejuvenation! Let us continue to pray for one another. t’s a good thing Brother Angelus wears glasses, otherwise it would be really hard to tell him apart from Brother Innocent. It’s tricky enough as it is, given that they’re brother-Brothers: siblings and consecrated Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (or CFRs). They’re also twins – or rather, two-thirds of a triplet. Their triplet sister Katie is (no, not a nun) back home in Nebraska with her husband and family. All three are graduates of Pius X High School - Class of 2003. Besides their looks and matching grey habits, Brothers Angelus and Innocent share an infectious zeal and joy for the Gospel that they’re taking to the streets – and to TV – come fall 2015 with a new documentary-style show called “Icons”. “The traditional concept of icons, especially in the theology of the East, is that icons are really a sacramental, there’s a real presence of Christ there,” Brother Angelus told CNA. “So the fact is that young people are icons in the world. They reveal Christ in their relationships, in their work, in their vocations, in their family, whatever they do.” For their show, the Brothers are seeking out young people who are icons in the real world – those who are living and working for the Lord and inspiring others to do so as well. And rather than inviting them into the same studio for a talk show every week, the Brothers are hitting the road to film them in action. “It was kind of inspired by CNN heroes, where they honor heroes throughout the year and do documentaries on them,” Brother Angelus said, “so we were like yeah, that is exactly the kind of model we want, we want to go out and tell people’s stories.” The first season of “Icons” will have 13 episodes, and the Brothers are hoping that young people will send in their nominations through the website for people who are icons in their life who should be featured on the show. “We want people from every walk of life who have met the Lord, who have really become a disciple of him, and now they go out in the world and reveal him to all those they meet,” Brother Angelus said. “Those are the kinds of people that the world needs right now, because people are hungry for the Lord.” Even though the Brothers spend much of their days studying to be

The formation we received in faith gave us a firm foundation in the spiritual life and friendship that propelled us forward into our college years, seminary, and now in professed religious life. Our Catholic education and formation inspired us to seek a relationship with Christ and bear fruit and serve Him in the world. priests and serving in their apostolates in New York, they are no strangers to television. Starting a few years ago, they helped host EWTN’s Sunday Night Prime after Father Benedict Groeschel, the late founder of the CFR brothers, retired from the position. They loved being able to share people’s inspiring stories of faith, but they wanted and were encouraged to develop a show that would reach a younger audience. “Catholic media is really irrelevant right now to a lot of young people,” Brother Angelus said. “That’s a dramatic statement, but it’s true. So we wanted to wrestle with that question and wrestle with that reality that Catholic media is irrelevant to a lot of young people today.” Brother Angelus said they realized that in order to make a compelling show, they had to tell real stories about real people, and they had to make it as highquality as possible. “If it’s not high quality, young people aren’t going to be interested,” he said. “They’re used to secular media, they’re used to secular TV shows, they’re used to the internet. So we want to tell people’s stories, but we also wanted it to be the highest quality we could so that people couldn’t write the show off.” Keeping that in mind, the brothers teamed up with media professionals in the Catholic world and started fundrais-
ing. The show is owned and being produced by the Live Greater Foundation, a non-profit that was the fruit of many years of the Live Greater movement established by the Brothers even before they were both in the friary. “There was always this movement to really take our faith and live passionately, like in John 10:10, ‘I came that you might have life and have it abundantly,’” said Brother Innocent. “And that’s the whole concept behind the Live Greater Foundation, as it’s grown to be.” The Live Greater Foundation is also a family business: the Brothers’ parents, sister Katie and brother Bob are all a part of the foundation’s work, which has three main outreaches: media, charity, and family life. Working with family, and especially as brother-Brothers, has been one of the greatest blessings of this endeavor so far, Brother Innocent added. “It’s just such a gift to do this together, we’ve been best friends our whole life, and then having this opportunity to do this together as brothers, that’s definitely a unique gift and I find myself grateful just to do that with him,” he said. With their new show, the Brothers feel they are answering their call as Franciscans and the call of Pope Francis to reach out to the peripheries and to spread the Gospel. “We were really inspired by Fr. Bene-
dict, our founder and hero,” Brother Innocent said. “He was a father to the poor but also he had this kind of amazing gift to use evangelization and media.” “The world sees the bad news of the Catholic Church, the scandals, and young people are really formed by that,” said Brother Angelus. “We want to tell the good news of young people who are living the faith, and then also, we want to create a community around ‘Icons’ so young people know that they belong to something, because there are other people who are living for the Lord, I’m not alone in this.” Part of that relatability and community is going to come from telling real stories which show that the Church is not a “place for the perfect” but for those who fall but get back up, Brother Angelus explained. They are also hoping to dispel the myth that having a relationship with Christ means begrudgingly following a list of cumbersome rules, he added. “Sometimes young people say if they live for the Lord then they’re going to have to follow all these rules and life’s going to be miserable,” he said. “But people who live for the Lord, especially young people, are some of the most joyful people we know, so they’ll see that being Christian and being joyful and authentic and real is possible.”

The Ambassadors Within by PJ Book
“We’ve given it a formal name and enhanced our organization, but the truth is that our school has been blessed with amazing students who have served as Christ’s Ambassadors to our student body for many years,” commented Director of Guidance Jan Frayser who began to formally organize the current Ambassadors program during the 2013-2014 school year. “As our administrative team grappled with how to keep our school centered on Christ during times when bullying and forms of depression have become increasingly prevalent, I believe that God planted this idea in my mind.” With approval from administration, Frayser teamed with guidance counselors Shelly Pick and Matthew Nolde and Academic Success Coordinator Raina Volkmer to create a Pius X version of the many inclusive community programs taking shape in school systems around the country. “I spent the summer of 2014 reading voraciously about best practices that combat bullying and create an environment where students feel welcomed by other student leaders who are passionate about being Christ’s ambassadors. I spoke with many people and gathered as much information as I could find from various sources and speakers who taught curriculum on creating the environment we want present within our school,” Frayser continued. Although the curriculum and organization only recently evolved into the cur-

rent Ambassadors program, elements of a student empowered community of acceptance have existed at Pius X for many years. Students who felt isolated, bullied, or struggled with other maladies were matched with a circle of friends designed to provide support and encouragement during difficult times. The practice later became aptly named the Circle of Friends program. Frayser recalls a circle of friends that was created for a student with Down Syndrome. “By the time this student graduated, we were noticing that many of the students in his circle of friends had experienced a two way relationship that greatly impacted their high school experience. While the circle of friends offered structure and security to this particular student, the student was teaching them about compassion, joy, and unconditional friendship,” shared Frayser. “The Guidance Office started receiving essays for college applications and scholarships that detailed how much the Circle of Friends had taught our students about Christ’s love being present in our everyday interactions.” 2015 graduate Sarah Endacott participated as one of the first members of the Ambassadors program. “I know that being part of this effort has tangibly affected my growth as an individual because I am constantly reminded by other Ambassadors to be a kind, compassionate individual. I believe the program gave me the opportunity to contribute to a positive and welcoming atmosphere at Pius X.” Using the foundation established by
the Circle of Friends, the Guidance Department facilitated a smooth transition to a more school-wide approach. Frayser envisioned meetings, instruction, and speakers who taught acceptance of all people as Christ’s children. The motto for the program became Jesse Jackson’s instruction, “Never look down on anybody unless you are helping them up.” Senior Gus Mattern stated that he believes the message is taking shape within the student body. “I know that I have been able to help and befriend people that I may not have otherwise encountered in my day to day life. I have seen parts of our school grow in ways that transcend social standing. The Ambassadors program conveys the idea that every student is valuable to the well-being of our school based on how they use their talents for the betterment of others.” While Pius X did not invent the idea of an internal school ambassadors program, Frayser and her staff developed a model specific to the core values of Pius X, beginning with the school’s motto to “Restore All Things in Christ.” “We aren’t the only group of kids at Pius X who build up those around us,” sophomore Clare Morehouse said. “Ambassadors is just a stepping stone that teaches us to specialize in serving others. We meet in the Blessed Mother Theresa Room for most meetings and that is fitting because she once said that a life not lived for others is not worthwhile. We are learning how to do this better within our high school, but I think the goal of the

WITHIN program is to eventually reach the ends of the earth.” Over 130 current Pius X students (more than 10% of the school’s total enrollment) take part in the Ambassador program. Frayser’s staff conducted training sessions beginning in the summer of 2014 and facilitated meetings between the Ambassadors and various speakers throughout the school year. “Our kids have given up lunch periods, study halls, and free time to educate themselves and offer academic and emotional support to our student body,” Shelly Pick said. “We have welcomed professional speakers like Drew Miller and Mike Donahue and we’ve also had some of our own Ambassadors speak. We address topics ranging from cyber bullying to physical and mental disabilities. Our goal has always been to empower our students to intervene when they see someone in need.” Frayser envisions a school where all students find acceptance from a student body modeling discipleship in Christ. “Our Ambassador group serves as a reflection of Christ’s love for all people. And all people are worthy of respect. We cannot possibly know what crosses other people are carrying, but we can know with certainty that Christ loves each of us without reservation. The more we share His love with others, the more it grows inside of us.”
Pius X Alumni Ordained to Priesthood Puis X is proud to announce the ordination of four new alumni to the priesthood. Bishop James D. Conley ordained eight priests for the Lincoln Diocese on Saturday, May 23, 2015. The four new priest alumni brings the total count of Pius X alumni who have been ordained or taken religious vows to 46. Pictured left to right are: Rev. Corey Harrison ’07, Rev. Denton Morris, Rev. Jim Morin ’08 will be ordained a transitional deacon in Rome this coming October.
Catholic Schools Week Eucharistic Procession led by Pius X Alumnus Monsignor John Perkinton ’75, Lincoln Diocese Superintendent of Schools, led a Eucharistic Procession through the halls of his alma mater. He also joined Pius X students, faculty and staff to celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass. The procession and Mass kicked off a week of activities to celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2015. On May 25, 2015, Msgr. Perkinton’s celebrated his 30th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. He is being honored with a card shower. Students Earn Top Scholarships at UNL Chemistry Day Pius X seniors Firdavskhon Nasimov and Madison Royse swept top honors at the annual UNL Chemistry Day, each bringing home one of two $1,500 scholarship prizes. The budding scientists also earned awards in two science competitions during the day-long event. In addition to earning the only two $1,500 scholarships awarded that day, classmates Royse and Nasimov also made strong showings in the Quiz Bowl (2nd place) and Scavenger Hunt. “I have been fortunate to have both Maddy and Firdavs in my classes, and I’m continually impressed by both,” Pius X Advanced Chemistry Teacher Mikala Bradley says. “They are top students and are quick to help tutor other students.” Bradley, who accompanied Royse and Nasimov to Chemistry Day, says that her students enjoyed participating in demos and competitions at the event and were able to experience what a college level lab and lecture is like. “I think this built their motivation and desire to pursue chemistry at the collegiate level,” she explains. “The scholarship is well deserved by both and I’m looking forward to seeing how they further develop and use their education.”
Kruse Earns 36 on ACT Congratulations to junior Liam Kruse who has earned the top composite score of 36 on the ACT exam. Nationally less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn the top score. Kruse said he was “pleasantly shocked” when he first saw the score. “I knew I was close to a 36, but was pretty sure that I was just a few points shy,” Kruse commented. “I remember jumping around the kitchen after the score first popped up on the computer screen.” After he received a score of 34 on his first attempt, Kruse enlisted the help of his math teachers at Pius X to prepare for that portion of the test. He gives the majority of the credit for his accomplishment to his parents. “I was homeschooled for eight years prior to my freshman year at Pius X. It was during those years that my parents gave me my foundation for English, math, and reading.” In a letter recognizing this exceptional achievement, ACT CEO Jon Whitmore said, “While test scores are just one of the many criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals.” While Kruse has not yet finalized his college plans, his choices are much broader after his perfect ACT score. Kruse’s current choice is between Purdue University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and he plans to major in aerospace engineering.
Academic Decathlon Claims 2nd at Nationals Pius X High School students claimed second place in Division II at the 2015 United States Academic Decathlon. Held in Garden Grove, Calif., on April 16-18, Pius X placed 8th overall out of 46 teams. The national competition is split into three divisions based on school size. A highlight of Pius X’s performance was a gold medal earned in the Super Quiz competition. Senior Philip Hanigan led Pius X individually and ranked 11th out of all competitors. This is the second year in a row that Pius X won the state competition and earned the trip to compete on the national level. The Pius X Aca Deca team is coached by Mrs. Ann Kotopka, Mrs. Shiela Sievert, Ms. Mary Jo Kopf and Mrs. Margaret Kaiser-Woodward. The Super Quiz team participants included: Honors - Philip Hanigan, Liam Kruse, Catherine Krueger; Scholastic - Henry Jaros, Jacob Schreiber, Anna Tetherow; and Varsity - Noah Schimenti, Freddie Barie, Esther Brown. Baseball Team Repeats as State Champion Nine seniors led Pius X through a 5-0 tournament run that ended with a 6-3 victory over Norris in the state championship game. 2015 saw the Pius X baseball program play in its fourth consecutive state championship game and hoist its seventh consecutive district championship trophy. State championships in 2012, 2014, & 2015 reflect the investment of young men modeling accountability, dedication, and a selfless love of their teammates and the game of baseball. Girls Basketball Wins State Championship Congratulations to the Thunderbolt Girls’ Basketball Team who claimed the Class B State Basketball Championship. The verteran team returned to the hardwood after finishing with a state runner-up title a year ago. In the state tournament the Lady Thunderbolts defeated Scottsbluff (55-29) and Omaha Gross Catholic (54-29) before taking on Norris (41-33) for the championship. Team members included Becky Brokaw, Whitley Bryce, Kelsey Daberkow, Savannah Hanus, Mackenzie Helman, Alex Hewitt, Megan Quigley, Kylie Root, Kennedy Sander, Briahtia Sebek, Briley Sebek, Maddie Simon, and Regan Taubenheim. Pius X Students Shine in Performing Arts

The spring musical “Once Upon a Mattress” featured an amazing performance by Pius X students as they gave a fresh and witty take on the classic fairy tale, “The Princess and The Pea.”
The voices of Pius X students combine for perfect harmony as they entertained and wowed crowds at choral concerts, performances, and competitions throughout the year.
The vocal department presented a very special Christmas show. The Renaissance Madrigal Dinner featured a 3-course meal, Wassail Toast, trumpet fanfares, skits, and the amazing talent of Pius X students. The Pius X Vocal Music Program offers five choir groups, including acapella, classical music, performance choirs, all girls, and now a men’s only choir.
The Pius X marching band earned the first Division I Superior rating in 27 years at the State Marching Festival. The band also received an Excellence in Academic Achievement for having a cumulative GPA exceeding 3.5 and an award for High School Music Participation at the Exceptional level.

Imagine being able to program your toddler’s stroller so it will move on its own while you jog behind it, arms unencumbered. Imagine being able to control a computer with a laser pointer rather than hands, use a remote device to lift heavy things, or open car doors with wristband remotes while holding bags full of groceries.
Five Pius X High School students did, and then they made a video about it, and won $20,000 to split among themselves and another $20,000 for their school’s foundation. The Windstream competition, called “Smart Tomorrow,” also provides the winners a virtual learning session with a venture capitalist who will provide feedback on the video and offer career advice.
Pius X Students Earn Junior Achievement Scholarships Pius X students excelled in their participation in Junior Achievement® (JA) of Lincoln with two students earning scholarships. This is the 5th year in a row in which Pius X students have been awarded JA scholarships. Junior Achievement at Pius X is sponsored by business teacher Mr. Ryan Psota. Senior Sarah Endacott was awarded the Ken Carlson Scholarship ($1,000). Chosen from amongst all participants, Endacott earned the award based on her record of academic success and achievement in JA programs, her future plans to pursue a business major in college, and a required essay. Senior Hayley Stamper received a Driven Youth Invitational (DYI) Scholarship ($500) which was sponsored by Nelnet. Stamper was presented with the scholarship during a “Shark Tank” competition. The Driven Youth Invitational is a free 7-week program through which students are able to interact with some of Lincoln’s most successful and renowned entrepreneurs, and gain hands-on experience to create, build, and maintain a thriving business. Of the 21 students in the program, 12 were Pius X business students. Junior Achievement’s economic education programs have been offered to Lincoln-area high school students for more than 43 years. Junior Achievement works to empower young people to own their economic success by educating and inspiring them to value free enterprise, understand business and economics, and be workforce ready.

Thomas Hanzl, Jacob Hotovy, Brody Rolfes, Andrew Shonka and Nick Korta found out they’d won Thursday morning during an all-school assembly complete with the school’s pep band and some giant checks and glass trophies. The five competed with three other teams from Pius, and those from East, Northeast and Southwest high schools. A total of 35 students competed. The winners, still pumped over their third-place finish in a schoolwide Halloween video competition, thought they’d give it a try. They came up with the video, “Outside the Box,” and when the winner was announced Thursday, they jumped, they fist-pumped, they hugged and they smiled as they made their way to the middle of the gym to accept their trophies and giant $4,000 checks. Windstream created the competition to challenge students to illustrate their visions of the connected world of 2025 through short videos. The company focused on high school students because they will be the innovators of the future, said Sarah Day, Windstream’s senior vice president for consumer and small business marketing. Pius X Principal Tom Korta said he asked teachers to encourage students to participate because the local nature of the competition made it seem like a good bet. “It was definitely worth their time and energy,” he said. The winners agreed, and they gave most of the credit to Hotovy, a senior who will be attending a California filmmaking school next year. Hotovy said he and his mom sat down and brainstormed practical ways to use technology to make life easier. The group took a day to film the video and several more days to edit it. They were nervous. They knew, they said, they were going up against the smartest kids in the school. But Rolfes said they also knew they had Hotovy. “We had the secret weapon behind it all,” he said. The “Big 5” or “Straight Cash Homies,” as they call themselves, said they’ll use their winnings for college. Awhile back, they struck a pose illustrating “cash” -- fingers rubbing together, making it “rain” money -- during a show choir event. For fun, an inside joke. They did it again Thursday for the cameras after the assembly. For fun. And because this time, it really was raining cash.

2015 Inductees
Don Kelley – Coach. Kelley made an indelible mark on Pius X athletics coaching football, baseball, and both boys and girls basketball, winning multiple state championships and impacting hundreds of student athletes. He was also inducted into the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame in 2007. Chris Wickham – Class of 1964. Wickham received multiple state and city accolades throughout his career, culminating in the school’s first trip to the state basketball tournament in 1964. Wickham led the state in scoring that same year and his name is present in many categories throughout the Pius X basketball record books. Paul Kastl – Class of 1998. Kastl authored a very decorated career that included a gold medal in the 1998 Class A wrestling championships and multiple selections to All-City and All-State football teams. Kastl sits in the top five in every notable rushing category in the Pius X football record books. He also participated in baseball.
Nikki (Colson) Harrington – Class of 2000. Harrington produced a highly decorated volleyball career at the high school and collegiate levels. She was a three time 1st Team All-State selection at Pius X and a two time 1st Team Super-State selection. Pius X won three state championships during those seasons. She completed her career as the record holder for assists in a season and career at both Pius X and all Nebraska high schools. She also lettered in basketball. 1957/59 Golf Teams – Team Award. Pius X will honor the first state championship teams in the school’s history with a unified induction of the 1957/59 golf teams. The first state championship team in school history came from the efforts of Phil Breitfelder, Charles Burda, Robert Lane, and Thomas Melby. Two years later, the team of Jere Carey, Jules VanDersarl, Tom Yax, and Joe Herrod brought home another gold. These teams began a tradition of athletic success that has produced over 80 state championships in the 59 years of Pius X athletics.

“My sister, Mary, loved the Cornhuskers, card games, book clubs, and bible and church history classes and discussion groups, but most of all she loved her Catholic religion and her Catholic education,” commented Kay (Rocke) Owen ’57. Mary Ellen (Rocke) Keef was a 1956 graduate of Cathedral High School, the last graduating class from Cathedral High. Before Mary passed away in January 2015, she generously included the Pius X Foundation, along with other Catholic organizations, in her estate plan through a gift from her IRA. Mary’s daughter, Denise Emery, reflected on her Mom sharing: “The Catholic parishes and schools meant a lot to my mom. She was a very devout Catholic all her life. She attended St. Teresa’s grade school and then Cathedral High School.” Mary considered Pius X High School to be part of her own legacy and championed its growth and success. Denise continued, “her sister (Kay Owen ’57) was part of the first class to graduate from Pius X. Mom wanted to make sure that our parishes and schools continue to thrive.” Mary was an accomplished leader and business woman. She was a board member for Doane College and Crete Bank; co-owned two thriving businesses, taking active parts in their management; and also had a dress shop in the Haymarket. “Mom was very involved, not just in parishes and schools, but in a lot of organizations in Lincoln. She was a very giving person and generous to everyone,” Denise reflected. Gifts Allow Pius X to Reward Teachers; Build Usage of Strengths by Deb Hoge
Pius X High School is proud to announce that it has received two generous gifts to reward and support its faculty. The first donation provided a financial bonus to Pius X teachers, and the second gift enabled teachers to discover and build upon their God-given talents and natural abilities. An anonymous donor approached Pius X last fall with the intent to provide a gift to teachers. In February, the gift of more than $41,000 was funded and distributed to award faculty members for their dedication to their students and for their service to Pius X High School. Pius X has 85 full or part-time certified faculty members who received a bonus check through the donors’ generosity. “What a wonderful tribute to our teachers who make such a difference in our students’ lives and impact them daily,” stated Michelle Birkel, Pius X Director of Development. “We thank these benefactors who are investing in the education of our students by supporting our teachers.” “Pius X is an outstanding school with strong community support,” shared the anonymous donor. “We are proud of Pius’ affordable tuition rates, but we recognize that it limits how much the school can afford to pay teachers. Our donation is a way to supplement the teachers’ base pay and reward teachers for their outstanding work. Each teacher has a huge impact in helping our students find and use their God-given gifts to serve others,” continued the donor. “We hope our gift reinforces the importance of the work they are doing.” “I am grateful for this gift and to the donors for helping to tangibly express what I can only say with words: I am blessed to be able to work with all of our teachers at Pius X,” commented Principal Tom Korta. “Our teachers are very dedicated and positively touch the lives of the young people entrusted to our care. They are indeed the hands and mouth of Christ.” The second donation was provided at the start of the New Year when Dr. Courtney McCashland offered her expertise and business solution to Pius X’s administration to help build a strengthsbased culture within its academic program. McCashland is the CEO of Strengths Research, a performance-based talent assessment and development company.
Dr. Courtney McCashland, CEO of Strengths Research, shared with Pius X faculty information about the positive impact of understanding and intentially using and engaging our strengths on a daily basis.
Pius X faculty were asked to take a 3-minute survey to measure how deliberately, effectively, and consistently they engaged their strengths in their work. The survey is part of a Strengths Engagement Track (SET). McCashland’s goal was to start Pius X on a journey of “intentional focus around how to engage your strengths at work every day.” McCashland, who is a member of the Pius X Foundation Board of Directors, explained that “once we understand our innate talents, we can then engage those talents and become highly successful. I believe that the better we know ourselves and the activities that bring out our best, the more effective we will be at using our time wisely.” While each teacher received the results of their individual strengths survey, McCashland presented a summary of the results at a faculty meeting on March 16th. Her research has found that highly effective teams play to their strengths 84% of the time. She explained that when people engage their talents through strengths ac-
tivities, they “feel invigorated and aligned with God’s plan for them.” The key is for teachers to understand their strengths and to manage their time and day around those strengths. After the session with McCashland, Pius X teachers were provided a series of video workshops designed to help them learn to use their daily activities to identify their strengths and to focus their time on those activities for which they have the greatest passion, impact and fulfillment. “I sincerely thank Courtney for offering her expertise to help our school,” Korta acknowledged. “She is providing our teachers with an opportunity to learn more about developing their strengths and how to capitalize on the gifts God has given to us to live a happier, more satisfying life.” “By putting our collective strengths to work, Pius can fulfill its mission to graduate students who experience the joy of an authentic, Christ-centered life of service,” McCashland added.

The gratitude of students and parents for making a Catholic education possible for them and their children is evident in scholarship thank you letters. While each letter is unique, they all carry a common theme - a deep appreciation for the gift of a Catholic education and Pius X High School. The cost of a Catholic education, even with Pius X’s successful efforts to keep tuition affordable, is still a burden for many families. Thank you to all of the individuals and families who have so generously helped thousands of students attend Pius X High School over the years. This year more than $75,000 was generously awarded to 104 students through the Pius X Foundation’s endowed scholarships and special scholarship grants. Additionally, three other students received college scholarships to the University of Nebraska - Lincoln through the Marilue Becker Scholarship and the Drs. Mary and Kevin Case Scholarship. Most scholarships are awarded based on financial need. Scholarships are only awarded to a portion of the students needing assistance, and most do not cover the full cost of tuition. Larry Dugger ’64 returned to Pius X to inspire students to discover the career opportunities in engineering. Dugger, who recently retired from a 40 year career in nuclear energy, also served as the keynote speaker for the National Honor Society’s Honors Night. In his presentation, he told students that he wanted them to be fully aware of the advantages they will have acquired by graduating from Pius X.
Pius X Alumnus Shares Experiences, Speaks at National Honor Society by Deb Hoge
Larry Dugger, Pius X High School class of 1964 alumnus, returned to his alma mater to share his career and life experiences. After presenting and answering questions during six class periods, Dugger was the keynote speaker at Pius X’s National Honor Society (NHS) Honors Night. The convocation marked the 30th year that Pius X has honored its top scholars with induction into the National Honor Society. To qualify for induction, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher and meet the by-law requirements of the four NHS ideals. “NHS is founded on the ideals of character, service, leadership, and scholarship, all of which are at the heart of the Pius X mission,” stated Mr. Tom Seib, Pius X faculty member and NHS sponsor, noting that “while we emphasize all four goals, the Pius X Chapter focuses mainly on service and leadership. Larry Dugger talked about the importance of living up to all of these ideals and appreciating the gifts given to us in all of our lives.” As one who had previously walked the Pius X halls, Dugger’s goal was to help students be fully aware of the advantages of graduating from Pius X. Recently retired after a 40 year career, Dugger held senior management positions at three nuclear power stations, worked for 29 years at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, and served as the chairman of the Nuclear Safety Committee. “The core values and related behaviors
that you are acquiring will substantially enhance your professional development and the satisfaction you will receive from your life’s work, if you continue to practice them,” Dugger shared. “Your values will drive your quest for personal excellence and success. In retrospect, I consider myself very fortunate to have graduated from Pius X.” He continued by encouraging the honored students to worry less about what they were capable of and to be more ambitious in the goals they set for themselves. He further reminded students that personal values are directly tied to personal excellence. “Excellence is a journey,” Dugger stated. “The pursuit of excellence is a culture and a set of behaviors and underlying values that become a way of life. The most fundamental of these are integrity, humility, compassion, and respect.” Dugger challenged students to make a commitment to their own personal excellence. “You have been taught these values explicitly in your religion classes. You have also seen them illustrated by class assignments and the example of the Pius X staff.” Dugger also emphasized that companies and professional institutions actively seek people with ethical values that match their vision. While some companies believe people can be coached into the right personal or organizational behaviors, “it is an uphill battle and the learned behavior may not be sustained unless the right val-
ues were engrained during an individual’s upbringing.” “The world desperately needs the values you have learned,” Dugger noted. “If you identify them, internalize them, and live by them, they will drive both your career success and personal satisfaction in your life’s work.” Pius X students gained valuable insight into career opportunities in the engineering field throughout the school day as Dugger also took time to talk with six physics classes, including two groups of advanced placement students. “Interacting with the students today was really enjoyable,” Dugger shared. “The upper classmen were particularly attentive and curious. They really led the discussion and asked quality questions. They truly own their own learning process.” Pius X is more than twice the size as the days when Dugger was co-captain of the football team and a member of the first Pius X basketball team to win the city title and go to the Class A state tournament. Returning to his alma mater felt very good. “I received a great start here and the opportunity to give back in some small way is very special,” Dugger commented. “My goal was to help make students aware of the advantages of graduating from Pius X and to stimulate and encourage them to use these advantages as they approach their careers.”

Bits & Pieces O’Shea-Creal Stars In New York Show Con O’Shea-Creal ’04 was one of six featured singers and dancers in “All Dancing! All Singing! Irving Berlin in Hollywood.” According to a review in The New York Times, the show was: “Directed and choreographed by Randy Skinner, this lighterthan-air revue of Berlin movie songs featured six singer-dancers.” O’Shea-Creal (pictured left with fellow co-star Kristen Beth Williams) was one of the six who “reprised the gliding ballroom style of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.” The review also stated that the show “smoothly accomplished what Depression-era movie musicals did so skillfully. Flattery on Stage in Lincoln Sean Flattery ’10 recently starred in the Lincoln Community Playhouse’s performance of “Oklahoma!” Flattery played the role of Curly McLain. “Oklahoma!” opened on Broadway 72 years ago and premiered on the silver screen nearly 60 years ago. Based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, “Green Grow the Lilacs,” the musical tells the story of Curly and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. Flattery was quoted in an article in the Lincoln Journal-Star: “One of the major themes is the way men look at women. I think it’s a driving force. Curly sees Laurey as a woman, and Jud (the musical’s villain) sees her as a thing. It’s still relevant today.” Flattery is a veteran performer at the Lincoln Community Playhouse. Last fall he starred in “Mary Poppins” as Bert, and he has also appeared in “West Side Story” and “Anything Goes.” Since graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in art and film studies, Flattery works as a graphic designer at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland.

Anne (Daddario) LaBella ’85 was a criminal defense lawyer with her own practice until 2010, when she was appointed judge for the City of Kansas City, Mo. One of eight judges in the municipal court, she sees cases from parking tickets to assaults, guns and drug cases - all misdemeanors. She is also the drug court judge, a treatment court designed to work with offenders who are going through treatment in an effort to change their lives (and avoid jail). She has two sons: Benny (9) and Joey (11). Jon Conradt ’87 has worked for Apple, Google, Microsoft, eBay, and Amazon since graduating from Pius X. He has lived in Sweden and Finland, and now resides in Mercer Island, Wash. He was

on the team that created the Chrome browser. Jon and his wife Heidi were married in 1991, and they have a son and a daughter. Heidi is a elementary special education teacher.

After medical school at UNMC, she completed her residency in Kansas City. She also completed a pediatrics internship at the Children’s Mercy Hospital
and her dermatology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She returned to Lincoln this past summer with her husband, Dr. Jesse Weir of Associated Anesthesiologists P.C. They have two daughters, Allie and Hannah. Army Specialist Caroline Haug ’07 graduated from UNL with a B.S in Science. She is now living in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and will return in 2015 to finish her Bachelor’s degree at Bryan School of Nursing. Jacob Pribnow ’08 received his bachelor’s degree in PGA Golf Management from UNL. After graduation he worked at the Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln before moving to Jackson Hole, Wyo., where he worked for two seasons at the Teton Pines Country Club and Resort. He then moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he worked at Minnehaha Country Club. Jacob just recently moved back to Lincoln, and accepted an assistant golf professional position at the Country Club of Lincoln. Ashley Haug ’09 graduated with a B.A. from UNL, and is now teaching second grade in the impoverished Mississippi Delta through the Teach for America Program. She is currently working on her Masters of Education program through Johns Hopkins University.

Jake Ramsay ’10 was named the men’s GPAC Soccer offensive player of the year for the second straight season for the Hastings College Broncos. He led the Broncos to a 17-3-2 season. Liz Szatko ’11 graduated on May 9th from the UNL College of Architecture with a B.S. in Design with High Distinction. Liz will continue her education this fall and work towards a Master’s Degree in Architecture at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Maggie Dawson ’12 has been awarded a Boren Scholarship which will take her to Mozambique where she will spend her fall and spring semester at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo. She will spend the summer learning Portuguese at the University of Florida. She was one of 171 award winners out of 750 applications. She will be volunteering her services through the CARE (Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere) program, which is an international organization focused on alleviating poverty. It’s a Bug’s Life! Alexander Cunningham ’93 is an Entomologist/Identifier for USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) Plant Protection and Quarantine division in Miami, Fla. He identifies organisms from other countries, in order to protect the United States from new pests or weeds coming into our country which could harm crops, trees, or natural lands. Cunningham and his team discover new species unknown to science on a regular basis. He also volunteers for outreach events at schools, orchid and tropical plant shows, and agriculture events, and assists with conservation efforts such as prairie restorations and invasive weed removal. After graduation from Pius, he was awarded an internship at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from St. Olaf College, and later returned to Lincoln to get his master’s degree at UNL.

Krick posted a time of 58.09 in the 400 meters, the second fastest mark in school history. She also had a time of 26.02 in the 200 meters. Teel posted the top GPAC time in the 600 meters at 1:21.33. His time was the third fastest in school history. He also was
on a 4 x 400 meter relay team that posted a time of 3:22.48 which ranks second in the GPAC this season.

Your generosity raised more than $229,000 to support the capital improvement needs of our school and the efforts of the Booster Club. This year, the funds will be used to add air conditioning to the physical education/practice gym. An additional $26,000 was raised through a special challenge Dawn and Adam ’01 Raun match to help Pius X retain and recruit high quality teachers, and which allowed Pius X to receive $25,000 from the Bishop Flavin Fund/Joy of the Gospel Campaign.
