On the cover Pius X students, parents, alumni, and friends have had a wide array of accomplishments to celebrate, tragedy to mourn, and blessing for which to be thankful. Pius X Football alumni congratulated Coach Tim Aylward ’69 for two accomplishments - more than 30 years of coaching and more than 200 wins. The Pius X Cheerleaders formed a purple heart as students, faculty, and staff all mourned the loss of Justice Coleman ’16 who tragically died in a car accident. Generations united in celebration for the annual Founders & Grandparents Day: Sally Burt and Joe Burt ’18 and Mary Messineo ’19 and Tony Messineo ’59. As per our school’s motto, the Pius X family restored “all things in Christ” by gathering on many occasions for Mass and prayer.

P

ope Francis announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy less than a year ago stating, “I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God.” (Pope Francis’ announcement of the Year of Mercy, March 13, 2015) How fitting for Pope Francis to declare this year of mercy which began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 2015. As terrorism and prejudice continue to flourish and frighten, this special year is to “render more clear her

(the Church’s) mission to be a witness to mercy; and we have to make this journey. It is a journey which begins with spiritual conversion.” Consider for a moment the effects of increased forgiveness among families, coworkers, classmates and citizens of our country and the world. Through prayer, let us strive together to make it a year where the ugliness of hatred and judgment lose their stronghold and give way to acceptance, working together and kindness. Let’s do our part in offering forgiveness and mercy so that when this year of mercy ends on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (November 20, 2016), a transformation of heart will be felt within each of us and every person on Earth. As we enter this Holy Year of Mercy and the graced season of Advent and Christmas, I pray that you and yours may know the gift of God’s mercy more wonderfully. Know that I am very grateful for the gift of faith that is shown to me by the Pius X family and very grateful for the gifts of your prayers and generous support for Pius. I remember you in my daily prayers and will especially remember you in my Christmas Masses. Let us continue to pray for one another! Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Rev. James J. Meysenburg, Chief Administrative Officer

PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE JUBILEE Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,

and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

The

Journey Pius X From history documented by P.J. Book

to

This is the first in a 3-part series on the history of Catholic education in the city of Lincoln in celebration of 60 years of Pius X High School history.

1879

The story of Catholic education in Lincoln began when Bishop James O’Connor (Omaha), following a summit of American bishops, urged the diocesan communities of Nebraska to invest in Catholic education.

1883 Bishop O’Connor canvassed the U.S. hoping to find an order of sisters who would come and teach in the new building. An order in Pennsylvania sent two religious sisters. The building had become a home for vagrants and crawly things and the Sisters had no money, but they simply set to work cleaning as best they could. The Sisters and parish approached the Fitzgeralds again and again to ask for funds to knock-out walls, restructure the building, and create a proper school. John and Mary Fitzgerald continued to supply the project and the newly named Academy of the Holy Child opened to its first class of Catholic school students on August 29, 1883. Many students had to be turned away. The school was in debt and the majority of students were boarded from surrounding communities. The school simply could not take on the expense of additional students while operating in the red. When the school was unable to meet monthly and yearly expenses, the Fitzgeralds would balance the school’s account from their own pocket. Fitzgerald would die in December of 1894, leaving the Academy of the Holy Child without a benefactor.

1882

Fr. Michael Kennedy of St. Theresa’s parish near 13th and M Street found an unused building on 14th and U Street. It had originally been built by a man named Fairfield and was to be used as a convent and dormitory. The building sat vacant and was to be sold at a sheriff’s auction in 1882. Fr. Kennedy approached John (pictured) and Mary Fitzgerald with a request to buy the building.

Rev. Thomas Bonacum became the first bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln. After taking formal possession of the position in December of 1888, he desired to build a Catholic school for boys. His larger vision included maintaining the Academy of the Holy Child as a school and dormitory for girls while building a school east of St. Theresa Pro-Cathedral. Construction of the building cost approximately $35,000 and the school sat at 13th and M Street.

1890

1887

Classes at St. Theresa Pro-Cathedral were to be taught by the Brothers of Christian Schools, with whom Bishop Bonacum had a long standing relationship. However, when the doors were to be opened in 1890, the Brothers were unable to send any instructors. Bonacum instead invited the Sisters of Charity, B.V.M. to come to Lincoln. He opened the school to coed education, and used available teachers along with five religious sisters. The school was dedicated on September 7, 1890.

Fitzgerald Impact The Catholic schools of Lincoln can trace their roots back to the philanthropy and passion of John and Mary Fitzgerald who actively dedicated themselves to truly restore all things in Christ. John Fitzgerald was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1828 and made his way to New York as a lad. He learned how to dig canals and took his expertise further inland and made a name for himself building railroads and developing property. He ended up in Lincoln and married Mary. The Fitzgeralds felt they had a blessed obligation to perpetuate their faith and bought the building which became the Academy of the Holy Child for $5,500. He faithfully supported the inception of Catholic education in Lincoln until a stroke and failed health eventually led to his passing. A priest came to say Mass in his home on Touzalin (pictured) shortly before he died on December 27, 1894. Fitzgerald stated “God’s holy will be done. Mercy, my Jesus, Mercy” and passed away. At his passing, Fitzgerald’s $3 million fortune was nearly gone due to recession. Mary was forced to sell what remained of the Fitzgerald mansion and estate, and moved into a house near 19th and D until her passing.

1897

School curriculum at both the Academy and St. Theresa extended through the primary grades into some advanced (middle school) classwork. Within a few years of opening St. Theresa, Bonacum had implemented high school level curriculum for females, leading to the first Catholic school graduation in Lincoln in 1897.

1907

After a decade of operation, the old school building called the Academy of the Holy Child was operating on borrowed time. The deteriorating property and loss of the Fitzgerald’s support (upon his death in 1894) coincided with a shift in enrollment to St. Theresa’s. The sisters attempted to procure a new location for a new school building on 10 acres of land at 27th and A St. They borrowed $1,000 for an initial down payment on the $7,000 tract of land, awaiting permission from Rome and financial support from the community to complete the purchase. Neither materialized and the sisters closed The Academy of the Holy Child. The first Catholic school in Lincoln existed from 1883-1907 and concluded operation when the sisters from Pennsylvania boarded a train and left Lincoln, Nebraska.

Students Excel at Stock Market Challenge Pius X economics students competed in the inaugural Junior Achievement (JA) stock market challenge at UNL’s Innovation Campus. With all four teams performing well, Pius X had the highest finishing team of any Lincoln school. Teams bought and traded companies for 60 days using a real-life stock market floor atmosphere and real world situations, including initial public offerings, stockholder dividends, quarterly revenue projections, devaluing of foreign currency, and foreign terrorism, among other situations. One of the Pius X teams placed 3rd overall and received a trophy (team members were: Jakob Andreasen, Nathan Merritt, Tracy Nguyen, Whitney Tran). The other teams placed 8th, 15th and 16th out of 56 total teams.

Pius X Repeats at Chemistry Day Scott Allder, David Liescheski, and Nina Bui swept top honors at the annual UNL Chemistry Day and claimed a $1,500 scholarship prize. This is a repeat win for Pius X, as the Thunderbolts won the competition a year ago as well. “I have been fortunate to have these students in my class as well as in STEM club,” Pius X Advanced Chemistry Teacher Mikala Bradley says. “They are very bright students who all share an excitement and passion for science.” About 100 students and teachers participated in the demonstrations, chemistry lab tours, hands-on science experiments, and competitions. Students also learn more about UNL’s undergraduate Chemistry program, careers in chemistry, and scholarship opportunities.

Second Pius X Student Earns Perfect Score Senior Indy Talken has become the second member from the class of 2016 to earn a 36 on the ACT test. Senior Liam Kruse also has earned a perfect score. Talken said she was “in a state of disbelief ” when she saw her score. “I called my Dad asking him to log on to my ACT account and verify the 36 was real. I was so excited that my words were incomprehensible.” Achieving a 36 score has been a goal for Talken for many years, but she gives credit where due. “My Dad has been there for me, helping and guiding me, my entire life. I have received great guidance, including my St. Joseph teachers, Mathcounts student teachers, and, of course, Pius X. I spent a lot of time taking practice tests and utilized Mr. Hanus’ test preparation strategy.” Her 36 ACT score will provide Indy with many scholarship opportunities. She plans to pursue a degree in computer science, engineering, or law.

Pius X Claims Giant Silver Fork The Giant Silver Fork will remain at Pius X for another year thanks to the efforts of the Student Council. Pius X participated in the Southeast Nebraska Student Hunger Drive and walked away with the fork trophy for the third year in a row. The Student Council also earned a $1,000 prize to go toward next year’s drive and won the new “Canned Sculpture” contest with their Minion inspired “Hunger is Despicable” creation. The student-led effort collected more than 14,000 lbs. of food in the competition that included 11 area high schools. In total more than 41,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to the Food Bank of Lincoln. The food collected by Pius X was donated to Catholic Social Services.

Pius X Spanish teacher Katie (Reinsch) Hayes has been named the Outstanding World Language Teacher by the Nebraska International Languages Association (NILA). Hayes is a 1999 graduate of Pius X and has a Master of Arts in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. Hayes will now represent Nebraska at the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to be held in Columbus, Ohio, March 10-12, 2016. She will also compete for the Central State’s Teacher of the Year honors by submitting a portfolio and being interviewed as part of the selection process. Hayes was recently featured in Channel 8’s KLKNTV’s Excellence in Education series. A link to the news story is available on Facebook and at www. piusx.net.

Coach Aylward Reaches Milestone, to Step Down “This is something that I’ve been thinking about for a while, and after this season it seemed like the time was right.” Coach Tim Aylward ’69 announced his retirement from coaching on November 9th after 31 years as head coach of the Pius X Thunderbolts. Aylward served as only the 2nd head coach in program history, taking over for Vince Aldrich, the coach Aylward played for at Pius X in the 1960s. “This was a very difficult decision for me,” Aylward said. “I enjoy coaching very much. I will miss the day to day interactions with the players and the coaches, but as the athletic director I’ll still be involved in things. There are some things I want to do as AD.” The longtime coach retires with a career record of 208-133, guiding the Thunderbolts to state championships in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2004. Pius X recorded a 7-4 season in 2015, earning a playoff win at Grand Island Northwest before being eliminated to conclude another winning season and playoff trip that mirrored countless successful seasons over the last three decades. Thousands of young men will remember Coach Aylward for his weekly messages emphasizing the importance of being a good person as well as a good teammate. “It would be hard for me to pick out any single highlight or memory that stands out in my career because there have been so many. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented players and to have worked with some really good assistant coaches.” Aylward will have the opportunity to help lead the search for his replacement after a time line is established by the Pius X Administration.

Distinguished Stewards, Outstanding Alumna Recognized at the Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception by Deb Hoge

Msgr. Liam Barr introduced this year’s Distinguished Stewardship award honorees Agnes and Joe Hanigan.

The deep support for and dedication to Catholic education took center stage on Sunday afternoon, August 9 at the annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception. The event, hosted by the Pius X Foundation, honors the dedication of time, talent and treasure of many Pius X benefactors. The event also featured the presentation of two special awards for exemplary leadership, service and achievement. “Pius X is very fortunate to have the support of so many alumni, parents, the Lincoln community, and all of you,” noted Pius X Director of Development Michelle Birkel in her opening remarks. “You have made a difference in the lives of our students. Our students are deepening their Catholic identity and because of you, have a strong foundation for the rest of their life.” Joe and Agnes Hanigan Distinguished Stewardship Msgr. Liam Barr, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, presented the 2015 Distinguished Stewardship Award to Joe and Agnes Hanigan. Barr reflected on both his time as a young seminarian when he lived with the Hanigan family and as the school’s superintendent (19811994) as he eloquently explained the Hanigans’ impact on Pius X. As supporters for more than 55 years, Joe and Agnes have worked selflessly to support Catholic education at Pius X High School and in the Diocese of Lincoln. They are a true reflection of the value they place on the importance and

transformational power of Catholic education. Barr specifically noted how the couple laid the foundation for much of the current growth and development evident in the financial support system that exists at Pius X today. Joe and Agnes joined a select group of Pius X parents to organize and develop financial stability for the athletic Booster Club, were instrumental in the development of the BOLT dinner and gala event, and provided leadership in many fundraising campaigns, especially for the school library and locker rooms. Pius X and Catholic education were simply a part of the Hangian family. The long-time Lincoln couple raised eight children, all graduates of Pius X High School. They now have 46 grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren - many of whom will continue the growing family tree of Pius X graduates rooted in Agnes and Joe’s devotion to the Catholic school community. A successful and well respected businessman, Joe created and operated Midland Medical and AAA Rents. He would also develop property for State Farm Insurance later in his career. Joe and Agnes have also been active leaders in both the Catholic and Lincoln community at large. Agnes currently serves on the Pink Sister’s Executive Board and volunteers in the St. Teresa Thrift Shop. Joe is a 53-year member of the Serra Club, and he has served on many area boards, including Catholic Social Services, Madonna Professional Care Center, the Bishop’s Lay Committee for

Vocations, and St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center. Joe also worked on many stewardship drives, including the first addition to St. Joseph School and the Sisters of Christ the King convent. Dr. Mary Jean (Anderson) Case ’67 Outstanding Alumna Ms. Shannon Anderson ’78 introduced Dr. Mary Jean (Anderson) Case ’67 as the 2015 Outstanding Alumna. “I have the pleasure of presenting the Outstanding Alumni Award this year to a very special person in my life, my sister Mary Jean Anderson Case,” started Anderson during the introduction of her sister. “It is indeed an honor to be part of this recognition…Pius’ mission to restore all things in Christ is amended daily by her commitment to restore all things all the time in Christ. Mary Jean is fearless in her commitment to bring out the best in those around her and fierce in her faith to do so with peace and love, especially in what others believe to be impossible.” Dr. Case is a National Board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist with subspecialty training in neuropathology. After graduation from Pius X she earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Mary College and a master’s in environmental engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Case graduated from medical school at the University of Nebraska in 1976. She continued on to a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Iowa, and a neuropathology fellowship at the Universities of Washington and Iowa.

Dr. Case worked in private practice at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha and Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, Washington. During the course of her professional career, Dr. Case added four professional foci to her resume: Hospice and Palliative Care; The Stanford University Chronic Disease Self Management Program; a Minister of Presence at Recovery Café, a private day program for recovering addicts; and Emergenetics, a psychometric tool that helps individual’s creative, positive and dynamic working environments at home and on the job. Today she serves as a Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Facilitator and Master Trainer, an Emergenetics Facilitator with advanced certification, and an Emergenetics International’s Staff Neuroscientist. Mary’s husband Kevin is a radiologist working within a perinatology practice, exclusively serving at risk pregnant patient families. The couple continues to reside in Washington State. Their two daughters, Mairead and Siobhan, live in Denver and Boston, respectively. Despite growing up in Washington, Dr. Case’s daughters know the legacy of Pius X and the University of Nebraska campus, having attended many football games in Lincoln and Masses at St. Patrick parish, where Mary attended school and where she and Kevin were married. Case and her husband have also established a scholarship at UNL for a female Pius X graduate.

While life branched out to take Dorothy Jeanne (Vestecka) Kouwenberg around the world, her roots were firmly planted in Lincoln, in her Catholic education, and in her family. A 1946 Cathedral High alumna, Dorothy graduated from UNL in 1950. After WWII, she worked in Japan as a historian for the Air Force and volunteered at St. Joseph’s orphanage in Tanashi. She also worked for KOLN-TV for four years before moving to New York City in 1957. She married her husband Ben in 1969 and lived in Amsterdam, Holland, for many years. After her husband’s death in 1981, she returned to New York where she worked for Springer Publishing Company. She authored several books, including Diminuendo (2001) and Never Since the Dews Began (2009.) She also played violin in the Riverside Community Orchestra and performed classical duets with her sister Helen, a pianist. Dorothy was affectionately known and will be remembered by her family as ‘Dood.’ “I think this picture captures my Aunt Dood. She was warm, friendly, and outgoing, and was deeply committed to her family and her faith,” commented Dood’s niece Marie Gray. Dood passed away on September 20, 2015. Never forgetting her roots and honoring her commitment to her faith, she generously included the Pius X Foundation in her estate plan. Her family, honoring her love of music, also requested that memorials be designated to the Pius X Band. Dood’s gift is a beautiful testament to her life, and, as her nieces and nephews wrote in her obituary, “her faith in God and in the goodness of His creation [which] radiated through her entire being.” All individuals are encouraged to consult with a professional advisor before entering into any charitable or planned gift agreement. Please contact Michelle Birkel at michelle.birkel@piusx.net or call her at 402-488-1046 to visit with you as you consider your legacy gift to Pius X High School/Foundation or if you have already included Pius X in your estate plan.

Fulfilling a need from the Teachers’ Wish List is a great Christmas Gift...and it’s tax-deductible, too!

This past summer a number of school beautification projects were completed through the main hallway of Pius X High School leading from the front entrance to the Pius X Chapel. One of the projects was our Parish Community wall which displays the partner parishes, schools and current pastors. The only missing parish and school is St. Patrick’s which recently built a new church. Their pictures will be added to the display this spring. SECOND ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CLASS INDUCTED

A beloved coach and teacher, and alumni from 4 different decades were honored as the second class to be inducted into the Pius X athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held Sunday evening, August 9th, and capped off a weekend of events which celebrated Pius X’s history, friendships and promising future. Hosted by the Pius X Booster Club and the Pius X Foundation, the evening reception was attended by more than 200 guests. Tim Aylward ’69, Pius X athletic director, detailed the accomplishments of the inductees and presented each with their Hall of Fame medal.

by Deb Hoge

Don Kelley - 1968-2005 • Teacher, Coach Coach Kelley served as head boys’ basketball coach at Pius X from 1968 to 1980, advancing to the state tournament five times and winning the 1974 state championship en route to a 123-120 record. During this time he also served as head baseball coach, earning a state championship in 1974. He was also an assistant coach on four state championship football teams. Kelley took over as head girls’ basketball coach in 1985 and compiled an astounding 145-19 record, reaching five consecutive state championship games and earning back-to-back state championships in 1991 and 1992. Kelley earned multiple statewide coaching awards and was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He was instrumental in advancing high school basketball in Nebraska through the development of a Lincoln youth basketball camp originally held at Pius X and the development of the state’s first all-star game. He also taught social studies for 45 years before retiring in 2005. The Governor’s Commission on Education recognized Kelley as the High School Teacher of the Year in 1997.

2015 Hall of Fame Inductees: (back, l-r) Chris Wickham ’64, Don Kelley, Nikki (Colson) Harrington ’00, Paul Kastl ’98, (front, l-r) Joe Herrod ’60, Jules VanDersarl ’61, Tom Melby ’57, and Charles ‘Chick’ Burda ’57.

Chris Wickham - 1964 • Basketball, Baseball Wickham concluded an exceptional year as captain of the 1964 basketball team that not only earned the first state tournament bid in Pius X history, but also stands as the only basketball team to earn a bid into the Class A state tournament. Long before the three point line and creating shots off the dribble became integral parts of the game, Wickham brought both long range shooting and advanced ball handling to the gym for Pius X. His 422 points in the 1964 sea3 son led the city in scoring and still ranks as the fourth highest season total in program history. Wickham’s 22 ppg still ranks as the second highest scoring average in a season more than 50 years later. Wickham also earned two letters on the Pius X baseball team. 7 6

Paul Kastl - 1998 • Football, Wrestling, Baseball Kastl serves as one of the elite examples of the many exceptional multi-sport athletes that have walked the halls of Pius X. He earned All-City recognition two times and was an All-State and Shrine Bowl selection in football. He still holds the all-time record for most rushing yards per game in school history and sits in the top four in rushing yards in a career, rushing yards in a season, touchdowns in a career, and touchdowns in a season. Kastl moved on to wrestling season and qualified for the state meet multiple times, winning the 1998 Class A gold medal in the 189 lb. weight class. He spent his spring lettering on the baseball field. Kastl walked on at the University of Nebraska, earning a football scholarship his junior year. He earned his B.A. in Sociology and moved to Omaha to work for Werner Enterprises as a regional operations manager. Nikki (Colson) Harrington - 2000 • Volleyball, Basketball Colson excelled at volleyball throughout high school and college, writing a decorated story along the way. She was the first freshman to earn a starting position for Coach Jake Moore, earning four varsity letters. She was eventually named a four time All-City selection and four time All-State selection, winning three straight State Championship trophies from 1997-1999. She graduated holding Pius X records in assists in a match, season, and career. She also held the record for ace serves in a career. In addition to her records at Pius X, she graduated as the Nebraska high school record holder in assists for a match and career. Not only were Colson’s teams the first in Pius X history to win gold in volleyball, they never lost a match to a Class B school. Colson led volleyball teams completed a four year record of 11321. She also lettered in basketball. Colson continued her playing career at Michigan State University, earning All-Big 10 honors and multiple awards for her accomplishments as a setter. While serving as a three year captain for MSU, Colson set records for assists in a season and career and was twice named MVP of the Spartans. She was named to the Dean’s List and graduated with a degree in Communications from MSU before earning a Master’s in Speech Pathology from the University of Nebraska.

1957 & 1959 Golf Teams Many people may not know that the Catholic High Schools of Lincoln gained statewide notoriety for their golf teams as much as any sport when Pius X first opened its doors. Cathedral High School brought home Class B state championships in golf in 1955 & 1956. Some of those players brought the newly formed Pius X High School its first ever state championship in 1957 by way of Pioneer Golf Course on Friday, May 11, 1957. The Bill Inbody coached Thunderbolts defeated Omaha Holy Name by nine strokes with a team total of 252. Phil Breitfelder, who won the individual gold medal on the 1956 state championship team, shot an 82 on a rain soaked course to tie for first place. Teammates Charles ‘Chick’ Burda and Tom Melby rounded out the composite scoring for Pius X with sophomore Jere Carey also competing. The Carey led team would finish 2nd place in the 1958 state tournament. 1959 brought another state championship to Pius X, completing a run of four state golf championships over five years. This time senior Jere Carey would win the individual title at Pioneers Golf Club with a score of 78. The team’s score of 257 defeated Ord by seven strokes. Sophomore Jules VanDersarl, senior Tom Yax and junior Joe Herrod rounded out the scoring for Pius X. This title would be the last championship won by Pius X for nearly 15 years, but these first two championships set the bar for the next 60 years of athletic tradition and excellence, culminating in over 130 state championship games and over 70 state championship trophies currently present in the halls of Pius X High School.

Reunion Weekend Brings Friends Together On Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, our alumni and guests enjoyed an evening at Pius X as part of the 2015 All Honor Year Reunion weekend. This year’s reunion honored all classes whose graduation year ended in 0 and 5. The reunion events began with a tour of the school, followed by Mass in the Pius X Chapel. Rev. James J. Meysenburg, Chief Administrative Officer of Pius X, celebrated the Mass, which was offered in memory of our 62 deceased honor year class members. Everyone then gathered in the Pius X Commons for a reception and lots of catching up, with laughter, memories, and smiles being shared with old friends. Fr. Meysenburg spoke about the history of the school, including the many changes that have taken place over the years, and highlighted the school’s plans for the future and the fact that we are at our highest enrollment ever. The class members having already celebrated their 50th class reunion, including Cathedral Alumni, were honored as members of the “Golden Thunderbolt Club,” receiving a special token to celebrate the event. The 2015 Reunion Weekend, sponsored by the Pius X Alumni Department, also included individual class gatherings on Friday evening, and the ThunderBOLT Fun Run on Saturday morning with a record number in attendance including 18 Religious Sisters. Thank you to the classes of ’75, ’90, ’95 and ‘05 for sponsoring the Fun Run. Many classes also held other class activities on Saturday, including golf outings and parties. On Sunday, many alumni returned to attend the annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception and the athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The reception featured the honoring of this year’s Distinguished Stewards, Agnes and Joe Hanigan, and the Outstanding Alumni award recipients, Dr. Mary (Anderson) Case ’67. The Hall of Fame honored eight former Pius X athletes, Coach Don Kelley, Chris Wickham ’64, Paul Kastl ’98, Nikki (Colson) Harrington ’00 and the 1957 and 1959 Golf Teams.

McKee Spends Summer in Uganda Hilde McKee ’12 served a 10 week internship in Uganda this past summer. She spent her time tutoring kids at a Jesuit high school which educates about 750 students; all boarders and many of whom are orphans, former child soldiers, and/or victims of violence. The students have very long days - waking for breakfast at 4:30 a.m. with school days that go from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The interns found that their best talents were their friendly smiles, welcoming ears, and open hearts. During her short time there, Hilde learned a tremendous amount about their culture and history, but also about kindness, human strength, and dignity. Her day consisted of attending and helping to teach classes and leading extracurricular clubs. The most important part of her experience was simply being present to the students. McKee is a senior Psychology student at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. After graduation, she plans to serve a year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps before pursuing a graduate degree.
