pius welcome

A

s we prepare to enter the graced seasons of Advent and Christmas, I pray that you and yours may know the gift of joy and gratitude for all the blessings and treasures in your life. God works so wonderfully in our daily lives. The greatest example of God’s work in a human, tangible way is that He sent his only Son. Jesus was born a vulnerable infant child in a barn, totally dependent on Joseph, Mary and God the Father. Christ knows our struggles in this world and in our spiritual journeys. He walks with us; if we let Him, He carries us. Paul’s letter to the Philippians poignantly reminds me of this. He is with us in our times of rejoicing, when we feel contentment and peace. He is with us, as well, during our most difficult and trying times. He brings a peace that cannot be stolen from us. He asks us to be filled with His grace, His life, and His love. He abundantly pours out His love for us in the Sacraments (tangible outward signs of His life and love). Armed with that love, Christ sends us as witnesses of Gospel joy into a world of fragile peace and broken promises. While incarcerated in Ephesus, Paul wrote this letter to the Philippians during a time when he was mistreated, hungry and lonely. Yet, his heart was filled with the joy of Christ. Brothers and sisters: I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began the good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ… Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. These words from Paul at a time when he could have been filled with gloom, give us hope and reassurance. If we rejoice in the Lord always, our hearts will be ever filled with His joy, contentment and peace. Then, kindness will reign in our world, anxiety will be put to rest and prayer will be ever on our lips. Thank you for generously supporting Pius through your prayers and works. May you and your family know how graced you are regardless of how wonderful or trying life might seem. May you thank the Lord for your blessings and may He allow you to be His light shining for others. I remember you in my daily prayers and will especially remember you in my Christmas Masses. Let us continue to pray for one another!

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Jim Meysenburg Superintendent

One day an elephant saw a hummingbird lying on its back with its tiny feet up in the air. “What are you doing?” asked the elephant. The hummingbird replied, “I heard that the sky might fall today, and so I am ready to help hold it up, should it fall.” The elephant laughed cruelly. “Do you really think,” he said, “that those tiny feet could help hold up the sky?” The hummingbird kept his feet up in the air, intent on his purpose as he replied, “Not alone. But each must do what he can. And this is what I can do.” This ancient Chinese parable describes exactly how Pius X High School has flourished for almost 60 years – through the tremendous dedication and involvement of thousands of feet, hands, minds and hearts of parents and students, staff, alumni and other Pius X supporters, both past and present.

Pius X High School Strategic Plan • 2014-2

sion “To enrich the mind, heart, and soul of each student through a Christ-centered Catholic environment that provides academic excellence and preparation to achieve a meaningful faith-filled life,” the strategic plan is designed to keep tuition affordable; maximize student learning; growth and development; continually enhance the curriculum; expand our facilities; and more. Like the story of the hummingbird and the elephant, all members of the Pius X family are needed to contribute their God-given talents and gifts to make the strategic plan a success. And when that happens, we won’t be holding up the sky – we will be reaching for the stars.

A modern-day fishes and loaves story, this year Pius X welcomed the largest freshmen class in school history which coincided with the unveiling of Pius X High School’s new five-year strategic plan: Pius Proud – Faith. Education. Life. Rooted in faith upon a mis-

SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE Pius X High School named to Catholic Education Honor Roll

P

by Sophia Werning

ius X High School was recognized by The Cardinal Newman Society as it released this year’s Catholic Education Honor Roll 2014 Schools of Excellence. This distinct honor places Pius X among the top 5 percent of Catholic High Schools in the United States.

most affordable in the nation, with an average of $1,525 annual tuition compared to $9,622 nationally for incoming freshmen. This enables students from all socioeconomic backgrounds who seek a Catholic education in Lincoln to attend Pius X.

Since 2004, the Honor Roll has celebrated quality Catholic education throughout the country. Honor Roll schools receiving this designation are marked by the integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics. This year, Pius was one of seventy-one schools who received the honor of being named as a School of Excellence, and was the only school in Nebraska to earn this distinction.

“I wish to thank the Cardinal Newman Society for the honor they have bestowed upon Pius X, our central Catholic high school in the City of Lincoln,” notes the Most Reverend James D. Conley, Bishop of Lincoln, a staunch supporter and proponent of Pius X and of Catholic education throughout the diocese. “I am grateful to our faculty and staff who witness to the fact that the goal and purpose of Catholic education is to form disciples of Jesus Christ, thus demonstrating the beauty of Catholic education. Beauty attracts hearts and minds. Beauty captures imaginations. Beauty wins souls for Christ.”

“Since competition began in 2004, the Honor Roll has been a helpful tool for administrators, families, and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school education,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “The Honor Roll schools are a reminder that Catholic education is getting better every day—not only academically, but in the renewal of Catholic identity—and we are delighted to see the increased level of competition among the schools that participated in the program this year.” This honor comes just as Pius X celebrates its largest ever enrollment since opening its doors in October of 1956. Importantly, Pius X High School tuition is among the

“This is a great blessing and honor for our school,” Pius X Principal Tom Korta reflects. “The award speaks to the quality of our teachers and staff, the support of our parents, and the commitment to Catholic education that exists in the Lincoln Diocese.” Since the competition began in 2004, this marks the fifth time Pius X has been honored by the Catholic Honor Roll award. The school has twice made the top 50 Catholic high schools list, and twice has received an honorable mention in the category of Catholic Identity.

RETURN TO LEARN

Concussion Intervention Program Launched at Pius X by Sophia Werning

The Return to Learn Protocol helped Senior Scott Schieuer after he suffered a concussion while playing soccer last spring. His recovery process took nearly a month and required the cooperation of many faculty and staff. Scott is just one of approximately 30 Pius X students who have been helped by the Return to Learn program this year.

As fall high school sports kicked into full gear across the state, Pius X was working on fully implementing a new program. The Return to Learn Protocol (RTLP) is designed to monitor and assist students who have suffered sports-related or accident-related concussion or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Already, the program at Pius has helped approximately 30 students, including senior Scott Schieuer, who suffered a concussion during a home soccer match in March of this year. “I was playing and went up for a header,” Schieuer explains. The contact caused a large gash to the head, and he was taken to the emergency room, where he received two staples. It was not believed at that time that he had suffered a concussion. “Drew [Erks, the school athletic trainer] asked me where I was, what half we were in, what the score was, who was winning, who scored – and I was able to remember everything,” Schieuer says. When he was treated at the emergency room, he was asked similar questions by doctors, which he was able to accurately answer.

6

U piusx.net

The next day, Schieuer attended classes as usual, but went to check in with Erks as he was experiencing severe headaches. “Drew told me to see how it went over the weekend and to get lots of rest and not do anything,” he recalls. Following this advice, he went home and rested all weekend. The Return to Learn Protocol (RTLP) was used to help Schieuer, and is a nationally recognized program being implemented in Nebraska and around the country. It is designed to help schools put a policy in place to address concussionrelated injuries among students and to facilitate their safe return to both the classroom and onto the playing field. As the days wore on, Schieuer felt extremely fatigued. “I stayed at home and slept pretty much all day for about a week,” he recalls vaguely. When he made a return visit to his physician to have his staples removed, the doctor advised him to wear sunglasses as he was very sensitive to light, even indoors. “When I came back to school, I was told not to go to band for a while because of all the loud noises,” Schieuer says.

The establishment of the new program at Pius X included the creation of a Concussion Management Team comprised of Athletic Director Tim Aylward, Academic Success Coordinator Raina Volkmer, and Athletic trainer Drew Erks, MSEd, ATC. The team works closely together – along with teachers, guidance counselors, medical personnel and parents – to ensure that students who are referred to the program receive coordinated attention, monitoring and communication as they recover from a concussion or other brain injury. Approximately two weeks transpired before Scott returned to class at a routine but slow pace, beginning with only two classes the first two days back. Even when Schieuer returned to a full class schedule, he was exempted from participation in morning band practice to allow him to sleep longer and arrive at school for second period. For a time, he resumed a regular class schedule, however, was given extensions on when he would be given tests and quizzes, and one speech assignment was exempted altogether. “Teachers were really willing to work with me, and were very flexible about when I would be able to do assignments

academic success again,” he recalls. “They knew that I could not do as much work in the evening because I would get tired very easily. I would come home and go to sleep immediately for a couple of hours, and then wake up and do my homework.” As part of his adjustment back to school, after meeting with the athletic trainer the first two days, Schieuer would meet daily toward the end of the school day with Volkmer. She would assess his tiredness, ability to focus, light sensitivity, nausea, or other symptoms that would affect his ability to learn. Schieuer’s concussion symptoms seemed to fluctuate on his road to a full recovery. “There would be several times when I would be feeling better, and then the next day I would have a headache,” he recalls. “Drew and Mrs. Volkmer were helpful with planning when I could resume regular activities.” Although it was believed originally that he had a milder concussion and that he would be able to re-enter after one week, Schieuer did not return to his full schedule of extra-curricular activities for close to a month following his injury. Starting last February, Pius X became one of approximately 6% of schools in the state to move forward with design and implementation of a Return to Learn Protocol. Full implementation began with the new school year just in time for the fall and winter sports season, which is statistically the time of year when incidents of concussions spike nationally. “We need to make sure everyone at Pius X is aware of the effects of concussions,” Aylward says. “In addition to this awareness, we designed the Return to Learn protocol to help students who suffer from a concussion return to the classroom and be able to learn as effectively as possible.” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), “allowing adequate cognitive rest may help minimize a worsening of symptoms and potentially facilitate a quicker recovery without significant disruption to the student’s life.” In following with this recommendation, the RTLP at Pius X emphasizes that rest is considered “the best medicine” for those suffering from brain injuries. The concussed brain is effected in many functional aspects as a result of the injury. Memory, attention span, concentration and speed of processing all significantly impact learning. The protocol further explains that the concussed student returning too soon to the stimulating school environment may delay the resolution of symptoms needed for recovery. Consideration of the cognitive effects in returning to the classroom is also an important part of the treatment of concussions and head injuries.

Julieanne Clifford Taylor Endowment for Band and Tuition Assistance Established As a loving tribute to his daughter, Chuck Clifford of Lincoln has established the Julieanne Clifford Taylor Endowment for Band and Tuition Assistance. Julie Clifford Taylor was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on March 17, 1959 to Teresa Ann Loney and Charles F. Clifford, Jr. She attended St. Teresa Grade School in Lincoln and graduated from Pius X in 1977. Her siblings are all Pius X graduates: Marianne Clifford Upton ’72; Charles F. Clifford, III ’74; and Carol Clifford Jenkins ’80. In 1981, Julie graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and went on to work for CBS Television in Minneapolis, Minn. She married Michael J. Taylor in 1989 and from this union were born three daughters: Emily Catherine, Carolyn Nichole and Amanda Margaret. Julie was an active parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and was a “Super Soccer Mom” for her daughters on Texas state championship teams. As a full-time loving and caring mother, she committed her life to family and raising her three daughters. She loved volunteering at St. Anthony’s School (Texas), field trips, Girl Scouts and cooking for anyone in need. The fund, established within the Pius X Foundation, is a lasting memorial to Julieanne and will support Pius X in perpetuity, as the principal of the endowment will never be spent. Each year, a distribution from the earnings of the investment will be used to support the Pius X Band, as well as provide a scholarship to a St. Teresa student attending Pius X. The band donation may be used to purchase or repair instruments, band uniforms, or music stands, or purchase needed music or other supplies. You can make a gift to the Julianne Clifford Taylor Endowment at any time by visiting www.piusx.net or by contacting the Pius X Foundation at 402-488-1046.

The RTLP involves a series of steps and accommodations that are made for students like Scott in coordination with teachers, parents, medical personnel, and the guidance department. For some students, returning to normal school and extra-curricular activities may take just a short period of time. For others, the process can take weeks if not months or longer. “Every student is different,” Volkmer explains. Throughout Schieuer’s ordeal, the new RTLP program served as a tremendous asset and relief to his concerned parents. “What Raina did was tremendous,” reflects Scott’s father, Kevin. “I cannot overstate the value of her ability to coordinate with the teachers, the trainer, and, in particular us as parents. She listened to and heard what we said, and was able to coordinate with teachers to make progress.” He adds that corresponding with one contact person at the school versus all eight teachers made a challenging time much easier. “It was obvious that helping our son was Raina’s primary concern. She made

it so efficient so we could stay on track in dealing with the health issues.” Scott’s mother Heidi agrees. “Raina was phenomenal in helping us manage it, stay on track, and do what was appropriate,” she recalls. “I felt like Raina was an advocate for the family. I talked to her multiple times on the phone about Scott. She took the information I shared with her and communicated it to the coaches and teachers day to day. She grasped our perspective of how he was doing and put it into words and got everyone on the same page.” Volkmer also assisted with structuring Scott’s day, including mandatory rest time and meeting daily with him to monitor and log his symptoms. “Raina helped with determining and prioritizing what assignments Scott really needed to do, with a focus on the main part of what needed to be learned,” Scott’s mother Heidi notes. “The teachers were very accommodating to make adjustments and kept an eye on him as they were made aware that not getting enough rest prolongs recovery. We are really blessed to have this program at Pius.”

Pius X Wins 1st in Food Drive For the second year in a row, Pius X has won first place in the Southeast Nebraska Student Hunger Drive (large school category), bringing home a gigantic fork as a trophy and earning a $1,250 prize to go toward next year’s drive. Between Oct. 8 and Nov. 3, students collected 13,495 pounds of food in the effort to feed the hungry in our community. The successful drive was organized by the Pius X Student Council and their sponsors Shelly Pick and Jeanne Vaggalis. Approximately half of the food that was collected by Pius X will benefit Catholic Social Services.

Boys Tennis Team Named State Runner-Up The Boys Tennis Team completed a strong season with a runnerup finish at the Class B State Tournament. Each Thunderbolt competitor made it to the semifinals and medaled individually including: Sam Coy (#2 singles) State Runner-Up; Adam Olson and Tom Kelly (#1 Doubles) - State Runner-Up; Riley Warner and Joe Burt (#2 doubles) - State Runner-Up; and Landon Warner (#1 singles) 3rd place. The Bolts are coached by Head Coach Nolan DeWispelare and assistant coaches Sarah Buescher, Scott Burns, and Nick Vuko.

Marching Band Earns Top Rating Pius X’s 2014 marching band season culminated in the school’s first Division 1 rating in 27 years at the Nebraska State Marching Festival. This is the highest rating available to a band at the State competition. In the month of October, the Pius X Marching Band & Color Guard competed at three marching contests and the State competition. Their show was titled “Minimally Speaking” and featured music from three songs: Newrhythmics, Layers, and Echos. The band consistently improved their score throughout the competition season with judges rating the band on individual and ensemble music and visual performance and both the visual and musical general effect. “This year’s band is one of the largest ever with 140 members,” Band Director Jared Wilhelm notes. “The band students worked very hard all season and performed well at all marching contests.” Wilhelm adds that the band performed at a very high level all season, and that the feedback received on their performances has been outstanding. “We are so proud of them,” he says. Wilhelm’s assistants at directing the band are Amy Gammel, Scott Dinslage and Christa Schissel.

Cross Country Teams Named State Champion and State Runner-Up

Pius X’s Cross Country teams raced to the head of the pack claiming the Class B Girls State Championship and the Boys State Runner-Up titles. This is the second year in a row that the Girls team brought home the state championship, while the Boys Cross Country team earned runner-up this year after placing third at state the previous season. Both teams are led by long-time Head Coach George O’Boyle and assistant coaches Josh Kramer, Bill Rice and Jamie Burns. “Their success was a result of a lot of hard work, really,” O’Boyle said of his back-to-back Girls state championship teams. “They started running July 7th and worked hard all summer.” “I really credit Coach O’Boyle,” senior Ellie Beiermann says. “We all love him. He always stays positive for us. Cross Country is a very mental sport, and Coach O’Boyle always helped put into our mind that we could really do this.” “I think we were successful this year because we were very unified as a team,” senior Kade Kalkowski reflects. “We had team nights, we ran together every day, we pushed each other. We really became like a family.” Individually, the Girls took home 1st (Willa Koenig), 2nd (Alex Pace) and 6th place (Ellie Beiermann) at State. After claiming a perfect score at the district competition (taking 1st - 5th), the Boys had two top 10 finishes at state: Jared Yost - 5th and Jack Goeden - 8th.

Music Department Receives Grant

Pius X’s growing and thriving music department recently was gifted a generous grant from the Lincoln-based Pearle Francis Finigan Foundation in the amount of $21,093. Funding from the grant covered the cost of upgrading the performing arts sound system and purchasing new choral risers and band uniforms. The sound system upgrade included a microphone package and new sound board. Pearle Francis Finigan, who passed away on October 6, 2009, was a strong proponent of music education and appreciation. In his youth, Finigan, who was confirmed at St. Patrick Church and came from a musical family, was involved in band both at school and in a Catholic band in Lincoln. “Pearle believed all students should have music in their lives,” notes Liana Sandin, the Foundation President. “We have a mandate that we mainly give to music education, partially because it is often neglected. Music does things for your brain that you cannot get any other way.” Photos: (far right) Brothers Ed and Pearle Finigan pictured with their cousin, Veryl, members of a Catholic band in Lincoln. Fund for Pius X

As Catholic school tuition across the country has sky-rocketed, your gift to the annual Fund for Pius X will ensure that Catholic education remains affordable for every student and their family. Even locally in Lincoln and Omaha, the average tuition for a religious or faith-based education is more than $9,000 per year compared to an average tuition cost of $1,525 per year at Pius X. This is made possible by the incredible sacrifice of our local parishes and through your generosity to our fund-raising efforts, especially the annual Fund for Pius X. This year’s goal for the annual fund is to raise $550,000! This is a hefty goal, but to date, we have received more than $429,000 in pledges and collected $254,000. This brings us to 78% of our goal.

The annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception held at the school’s commons featured the presentation of three special awards for exemplary leadership, service and achievement. Distinguished Stewardship Tom & Rhonda Peed On hand to receive the 2014 Distinguished Stewardship Award were Tom and Rhonda Peed of Lincoln. Founders of Sandhills Publishing, the Peeds were acknowledged as long-time supporters of Pius X and Catholic schools throughout the Lincoln Diocese, contributing an extraordinary amount of time, talent, and treasure through building construction, matching grant programs, teacher pay enhancements, and other funding.

As strong supporters of Catholic education, their goal has been to help ensure Catholic schools don’t simply become private schools that only the wealthy can afford. “Tom and Rhonda Peed understand that when we are blessed by God, we have a duty and obligation to be good stewards of those gifts,” Pius X Superintendent Rev. James Meysenburg explains. “It is their love for Catholic education, vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and for the church that has led them to be very generous and giving of their time, talent and treasure.” Among their many notable gifts, recently the Peeds established the Nebraska Wesleyan University/Pius X Endowed Scholarship and the Tom & Rhonda Peed Work Ethic Fund. The fund rewards hard work by providing self-help grants of up to $3,000 to match the summer employment earnings of any Pius X High School graduate attending Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Outstanding Alumni Dr. William C. Mobley ’66 The 2014 Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Class of 1966 alumnus William C. Mobley, MD, PhD. Dr. Mobley currently serves as a Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosciences at University of California – San Diego (UCSD). He also serves as Executive Director of UCSD’s Down Syndrome Center for Research and Treatment and is the Florence Riford Chair of Alzheimer Disease Research. The Outstanding Alumni award is presented each year to a Pius X graduate who has been an outstanding representative of Pius X High School and serves as an example of leadership and service to family, friends, community and country. Considered one of the most prominent academic neurologists in the U.S., Dr. Mobley has earned an international reputation for his research on degenerative disease of the central nervous system. His emphasis on the neurobiology of Down syndrome has brought new insights into the disease, including possible treatments. He has also done pioneering work on the neurobiology of Alzheimer’s disease. In a touching moment, Jamie Andrews, a Pius X graduate from the class of 2011 who has Down syndrome, gave the introductory remarks honoring Dr. Mobley’s work. “When I was a freshman here, my sister was a freshman at Stanford and there I met Dr. Mobley,” Andrews recalled. “We toured his lab and found out about

his work in neuroscience with mice and Down syndrome. He is making a difference in many good peoples’ lives.” “Dr. Mobley’s research is extremely important for expecting parents who receive a pre-natal diagnosis of Down syndrome,” Jamie’s father, Don Andrews, who nominated Mobley for the award, reflects. “Today, a couple hearing that diagnosis experiences tremendous uncertainty about the future and don’t have a lot of good information. Any treatment that would improve the cognitive abilities of infants and young people with Down syndrome would lead to better school performance, and greater acceptance [and understanding] of children with Down syndrome in all environments.” He added: “Dr. Mobley is a fantastic example of the kind of student Pius X High School turns out every year and I think his story would inspire current students and alumni alike to make a difference in the world.” Outstanding Alumni John J. Hanigan IIV ’66 Surrounded by many family members, former classmates and friends, Sharon (Houser) Hanigan ’64 of Lincoln received Pius X’s second 2014 Outstanding Alumni Award of the evening on behalf of and in memory of her husband of 45 years, John J. Hanigan II, ’64. Hanigan was honored for his strong commitment and service to Catholic education, the Lincoln Diocese as a whole, and in particular to Pius X. Among his many contributions,

Sharon Hanigan ’64 (center) and family accepted the Outstanding Alumni award in memory of her husband and their father, John J. Hanigan II ’64. John’s leadership has made a lasting impression on Catholic education.

his legacy will continue with the establishment of the John Hanigan Endowment to supplement new teacher salaries at Pius X. Hanigan passed away on March 8, 2014. “John was very gifted in his profession as a CPA, and he was also very committed to sharing that gift with his parish, with his school, and with his diocese, realizing that he had a great deal to give,” Msgr, Liam Barr, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, noted in his remarks prior to presenting the award. “And he did so, very quietly, and under the radar screen, most of the time, except for when he was very passionate about issues.” Barr emphasized that the functioning of the Diocesan financial structure as it is today is in large part a result of the many years of Hanigan’s leadership. John also devoted time and leadership to many local, regional, and charitable organizations. The annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception began in 2008 to recognize and thank supporters of Pius X High School and the Pius X Foundation. Pius X relies on the generosity of many to strengthen the current operation’s budget and the school’s endowment enabling Pius X to continue its tradition of making a Catholic education affordable for all families in the Lincoln area. Complete biographies of the honorees can be found online at www.piusx.net.

Pius X alumni and friends, including Keith and Pat May ’66, gathered to celebrate Catholic education at the annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception. Keith and Pat, who are friends and classmates of Dr. Bill Mobley’ 66, were the first recipients of the Distinguished Stewardship award in 2007.

Joe and Linda Rinaker, parents of alumni, and Laura ’88 and Kristian ’87 Anderson visited during the social part of the reception. Kristian, owner of Right Eye Digital, assisted Pius X in producing two videos thanking donors for their support of Pius X.

building a strong foundation

Fund to Support New Teacher Salaries Established An endowed fund within the Pius X Foundation has been established to provide funding for the support of new teacher salaries. The John Hanigan Endowment for New Teacher Salaries was established by John’s wife and children, Mrs. Sharon (Houser) Hanigan ’64 and Jennifer ’87, Darin ’92, and Ryan ’96. The funds for the establishment of the endowment were received by the Pius X Foundation as memorials when John passed away earlier this year. John learned the importance of Catholic education from an early age, attending grade school at St. Teresa Catholic School. Along with his wife of 45 years, John and Sharon (Houser) Hanigan both graduated from Pius X High School in 1964. John graciously devoted time and leadership to many local, regional, and charitable organizations. He also served on both the St. Peter Parish and the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln Finance Committees, advocating not just for financial management improvements, but for meaningful, disciplined enhancements centered on Catholic values. His commitment to his family and faith carried over to every aspect of his life. Through his family, faith, friendships, and work, John touched

many lives and left a lasting memory. John’s strong commitment to Catholic education led him to serve the Diocese of Lincoln. His legacy will continue with the establishment of this endowment. Specifically, the John Hanigan Endowment will benefit teachers who have five years or fewer of teaching experience. Typically, the largest gap between teacher salaries at Pius X and those at Lincoln Public Schools are seen in the first five years of teaching. This endowment will provide monetary support for the teachers who choose to teach at Pius X.

For a more complete history of John’s life, please visit www.piusx.net (Development/Support - Endowed Funds). Donations to the John Hanigan Endowment for New Teacher Salaries can be made any time, and will enable the fund to grow. As the principal balance increases, more funding to support new teacher salaries will be available. For more information on how to contribute to this fund, please contact Michelle Birkel in the Pius X Foundation at 402-488-1046.

Band and Art Department to Benefit from Endowment The Sean Michael Varner Endowment for Art & Band has been established to benefit the future needs of the band and art departments. Sean, a 1988 graduate who participated both in band and in the Art Club, passed away on November 25, 1997. The endowment was established by Ron and Carol Varner in their son’s memory. The endowment seeks to benefit the greatest number of students in these areas of study. The Art Department may use the funding to purchase reference books, materials and teaching aids, art equipment, or fund field trips or other needed supplies. Distributions to the Band Department may be used for new music or to purchase or repair instruments, music stands, or band uniforms. The first distribution from this endowment was used to purchase new stools for the art room to go with large work tables that were recently donated by Jim and Marilyn Slattery, owners of Art & Soul in Lincoln. You can donate to the Sean Varner Endowment for Art & Band at any time by visiting www.piusx.net or by contacting the Pius X Foundation at 402-488-1046.

What is a Charitable Gift Annuity? Charitable gift annuities can provide tremendous benefits to you, the donor, while providing important financial support to Pius X. In essence, this type of planned gift to Pius X will create: 1) Income you can’t outlive - Gift annuities pay a fixed amount for life to one or two people. 2) Increased income - Gift annuity rates are often significantly higher than rates for CDs, money market accounts, dividend yields, or other interest earning instruments. 3) Tax deduction - You will also receive a charitable tax deduction at the time the annuity is established. 4) Lasting impact - Your gift will help ensure Pius X’s ability to continue providing a strong Catholic education at an affordable price. Anyone who makes a charitable gift annuity or any other type of estate or planned gift to Pius X becomes a member of the St. Pius X Legacy Society. Regardless of income level or age, you can impact Pius X’s future by prayerfully considering including Pius X in your estate planning. For more information about establishing a charitable gift annuity or about other planned giving options, please contact Michelle Birkel, Director of Development, at michelle.birkel@piusx.net or 402.488.1046.

Superintendent Fr. Jim Meysenburg and Principal Tom Korta welcome students on the first day of school.

O

n behalf of the pastors of the 18 Catholic parishes which form Pius X High School, I express our heartfelt gratitude and thankfulness for the varied and generous support we receive from you and each of our numerous benefactors. Your support makes the cooperative effort of our parishes to provide a quality, Catholic education on the secondary school level possible. Thank you so very much. It is important that we are grateful and express this thankfulness, for thankfulness is a key attitude for a disciple of our Lord Jesus. Pius X is dedicated to the education and formation of our children in a manner that not only provides academic success, but cultivates in them the qualities and desire to achieve a meaningful, faith-filled life after graduation. We understand that growth in knowledge needs a direction, otherwise it is simply information. Christian discipleship gives that direction. Jesus said: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Denial of self and embracing the Father’s will is not an easy endeavor, particularly with the values that surround us on all sides. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure to Pius X High School and the Pius X Foundation make it possible for us to fulfill our mission of growing young disciples of Jesus. Your generosity also provides a powerful example to our young people of others who are denying themselves, embracing the Father’s will, and giving to others. Your generosity provides a living example of our vision for all of our students to experience the joy of an authentic, Christ-centered life of service, in which they will use their gifts to help others know and love God. Thank you for sharing in our important work.

Ollie will be remembered for his magnanimous spirit, his fierce work ethic, his fortitude, valor, and his dedication to his family. LORI (LAUX) JOHNSON ’75 May 10, 2014

Lori Johnson of Tarpon Springs, Fla., was born in Lincoln to John and Jean Laux. She had three siblings, and many nieces and nephews. She moved to Florida in 2007 where she married her husband Lynn. She will be dearly missed by her loving friends and family. She will be remembered most by her ability to listen and care about people, and the way she always met you with a smile. One lasting legacy is she would tell you to “Have the Best Day Ever”.

Bits & Pieces 1950s Eugene Zadina ’59 was born November 22, 1941, the second of four children (Patricia, Eugene, Mary, and Ann) born to John and Irene Zadina. Each of the children received their primary education at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School. Patricia graduated from Cathedral High, with the rest graduating from Pius X. While at Blessed Sacrament, Gene delivered newspapers for the Lincoln Journal Star, and became an Eagle Scout. His Pius X High School class of 1959 was the first to go all three years there. After graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 1963, he was drafted into the United States Army. His immediate induction was postponed because of the assassination of President Kennedy. While in the Army, he was stationed at Ft. Lewis Army Base in Tacoma, Wash. Gene’s service included a tour in Vietnam, before returning to Lincoln in 1966. Gene developed close relationships with his Army buddies, and after their discharge would get together on a yearly basis to renew their friendships. Gene moved to Chicago where he worked for the United States Postal Service. Eugene began suffering from kidney cancer. His illness was short as Eugene left us in 1986 at the age of 45. May God keep and bless him always. 1960s Wayne Arrigo ’66 is a retired United States Department of Agriculture Ag Credit Officer, a retired Army National Guard Band substitute teacher, and is currently

Wayne also volunteers for the Denver Rescue Mission and Boys and Girls Club. 1990s Sarah (Sumner) Kuhn ’98 graduated with a B.A. in English from UNL in 2003, and married Justin Kuhn. They have a daughter, Gemma Rose, born in November, 2011, and a son, Ryan Charles, born October, 2013. Sarah left her position as head copywriter at Sheplers, Inc. to stay home with their children. Justin is manager of Trade Compliance at Textron Aviation. He earned his MBA in Business Administration from Newman University in 2010. The family resides in Wichita, Kan. Elaine (Treick) Hansen ’99 is married with two children, Katie (6) and Hunter (4). They currently reside in Waverly. Her husband Justin works for Burlington Northern Railroad. They are an “outdoorsey” family, as Justin hunts deer in the fall and they fish in Minnesota every summer. Their daughter and Elaine are the runners of the family, completing a couple of runs together each year. Elaine participates in the “mud runs” for fun and exercise. She also loves to read and bake apple pie, which is her specialty. Katie is in CCD class at St. John’s parish in Lincoln and is attending school at Waverly public schools. Hunter, the baby of the family, will be in pre-kindergarten this fall and is very excited to be a “big kid”! Both of their children are avid swimmers, and enjoy the pool every day during the summer.

A Tribute to Pius X’s First Band Teacher Editor’s Note: A special request was made to share information about Phil Murphy, Pius X’s first band director from 1960-1978. Phil passed away in January 2014. The following was adapted from information shared with us by Phil’s daughter, Jane Manzitto, and Mike Murphy, Pius X band director from 1978-2014. Phil Murphy’s love of music was inspired by his high school band director, Duane Schultz. He went on to march in the U. S. Marine Corps Band and the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Band. Murphy taught at both Wymore and York, Neb., after receiving his Masters in music education from UNL. In 1960, Fr. Gene Kalin asked Murphy to start the music program at Pius X. At the time, Pius had only one other lay teacher, Vince Aldrich. Murphy accepted the challenge and let the Pius X band program until 1978. The Pius Band performed, competed and excelled in many competitions and parades. Early in his time at Pius, Murphy commissioned someone from UNL to write the Pius Fight Song, which was memorized by all. Murhpy may be most remembered and loved for his Homecoming Lights Out Shows. These were performed on the Pius football field, where band members marched with flashlights taped to their left ankle. “Dad worked everyone hard in band, but the reward and pride of the end result and his constant praise for fine performances made it worth every bit,” Manzitto remembers. “His former students would attest to this, especially as many went on to make careers in music as well.” Mike Murphy, Phil’s successor, adds: “While studying music education at UNL, I was always hearing of the Pius band program and specifically what a wonderful teacher Phil was. I can honestly say that even though he was still a relatively young man at the time, he was considered one of the top music educators in the state.” During Murphy’s last year at Pius X (1978), the marching band won the only superior awarded at Harvest of Harmony contest where Pius competed against 10 class A bands. The rating was Pius’ 13th superior in a row.

Atheletic Hall of Fame Becomes Reality by Deb Hoge and Sophia Werning

Athletes spanning two generations of alumni; a distinguished benefactor and beloved superintendent; a coach of significance and lasting impact; and a historymaking team were combined to create the first induction class to the Pius X athletic Hall of Fame. Held on August 3rd, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony capped off a weekend of events which celebrated Pius X’s history, friendships and future. Hosted by the Pius X Booster Club and the Pius X Foundation, the evening reception was attended by more than 225 guests. Fr. Jim Meysenburg, Superintendent, began the evening with an opening prayer and gave the crowd a brief overview of the changes being planned for Pius X in the future. Tim Aylward ’69, Pius X athletic director, and Richard Rice, 1950 Cathedral High graduate, enlightened the crowd with information about the rich athletic history of both Pius X and Cathedral High School. Special thanks is extended to the selection committee, which reviewed more than 70 nominations. The committee was led by Aylward and included Jake Moore, Assistant Director of Athletics, Michelle Birkel, Director of Development, Kristin (Edwards) Heath ’91, Director of Alumni, Mike Aldrich ’72, Carmen (Easley) Sanchez Andrade ’92, P.J. Book, Steve Burt ’86, Jeremy Ekeler ’97, Jim Hansen, Keith May ’66, Bill Rice ’75, and Bud Synhorst ’90. “The nomination and selection process went well, and we had a lot of eras represented,” Pius X Athletic Director Tim Aylward commented on the establishment of the Hall of Fame. “This gives us a chance to recognize those athletes, coaches, teams, and benefactors who helped build our tradition of athletic excellence over the past 60 years.”

The following week, Pius X upset Lincoln East 13-12. East had previously been ranked as the #1 team in the state. The Thunderbolts compiled six first-team All-City selections. Alumni Reunite to Remember Their Days at Pius X On Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, more than 100 alumni and guests enjoyed an evening at Pius X as part of the 2014 All Honor Year Reunion weekend. This year’s reunion honored all classes whose graduation year ended in 4 or 9. The reunion events began with a tour of the school, followed by Mass in the Pius X Chapel. Rev. James J. Meysenburg, superintendent; Rev. John Keefe ’59; Rev. Sean Timmerman ’94; and Msgr. Ivan Vap, former superintendent, celebrated the Mass, which was offered in memory of the 55 deceased honor year class members. Everyone then gathered in the Pius X Commons for a reception and lots of catching up, with laughter and smiles being shared with old friends. Fr. Meysenburg spoke about the history of the school, including the many changes that have taken place over the years, and highlighted the school’s plans for the future. Class members having already celebrated their 50th class reunion, including our Cathedral Alumni, were honored as members of the “Golden Thunderbolt Club,” receiving a special token to celebrate the event. Mary (Cripe) Oltjenbruns ’50 also was honored and thanked for leading the Cathedral High reunions for many years. The 2014 Reunion Weekend, sponsored by the Pius X Alumni Department, also included individual class gatherings on Friday evening, and the ThunderBOLT Fun Run on Saturday morning. Thank you to the classes of ’64, ’74, ’79, ’84, ’89, ’94, and ’99 for sponsoring the Fun Run. Many classes also held other class activities on Saturday, including golf outings and parties. On Sunday, many alumni returned to attend the annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception and the first athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The reception featured the honoring of this year’s Distinguished Stewards, Tom and Rhonda Peed, and two Outstanding Alumni award recipients, Dr. William Mobley ’66 and John Hanigan ’64.
