Inspiring Audiences

How do we give our audiences more? How do we inspire our audiences to want more? I am excited to announce the Cultural Events Series 2012-13 season. As we put this season together, we kept returning to two questions. How do we give our audiences more? How do we inspire our audiences to want more? Inspiring audiences quickly became our focal point. While searching for direction, I found an inspirational quote that succinctly expresses our focus.

“ Art can inspire artists and uncreative people alike. Art can provide transportation to another world or can reveal bits of truth about the world around you. Art is something different to the artist and each person who views the art. That is the beauty and complexity and greatness of art.”– Anonymous With this focus at the forefront, we have begun the transformation of Cultural Events Series into a program that will inspire our audiences to take the performances “beyond the stage” and into their lives. Educational outreach has always been a major component of our program. Now, instead of offering only structured opportunities for learning, we challenge our audience to learn more about the arts and apply this knowledge to their lives before, during and after the performances. Throughout the brochure, you will notice various “Inspiring Audiences” activities. These “structured” events are designed to expand your knowledge about various art forms and increase your appreciation for our performances. They are a challenge to you to begin going “beyond the stage.” They are all FREE. When you visit our newly designed website, ces.frostburg.edu, you will find additional “Inspiring Audiences” components. These range from children's activities, to international food recipes, to lesson plans focusing on core curriculum teaching, to just plain fun facts and trivia. We hope you enjoy and feel inspired by this season's performances. We challenge you to bring the arts into your everyday life! Thank you for your continued support! Frostburg Bicentennial Celebration Capstone Event

KAThY MATTEA ~ cAlling ME hoME Saturday, September 15 • 7:30 PM Main Arena, FSU Cordts P.E. Center “Mattea remains one of Nashville’s most spiritual singers, and the songs she sings about love lost and humility are as fine as any she has recorded.” – USA Today To celebrate the bicentennial of the city of Frostburg, CES welcomes Grammy-winning artist Kathy Mattea back to Western Maryland. Mattea’s performance will take the audience on a musical journey through Appalachia and its rich musical heritage. Throughout her career, this West Virginia native has acted as a “song catcher” by gathering the traditional Appalachian songs that depict the bravery, pride and emotion of her homeland. Her Grammy-nominated 2008 release, “Coal,” explored the culture and musical legacy of the region’s coal-mining community. Now, her 2012 release, “Calling Me Home,” pays further tribute to her heritage and allows her to extend her song-catching reputation. Mattea calls the album her “love letter to Appalachia.” There is no better way to celebrate 200 years of the Mountain City’s rich history. Sponsored by the Frostburg Bicentennial Committee

TiTAnic ThE MusicAl Sunday, September 30 • 3:00 PM & 7:30 PM Drama Theatre, FSU Performing Arts Center In 1912, the world’s first “unsinkable” ship met its fate in the icy waters of the Atlantic. In 2012, the Cultural Events Series observes the 100th anniversary of this maritime catastrophe with the presentation of the timeless Tony Award-winning musical, “Titanic.” Set amid the Edwardian era’s rigid social hierarchy, “Titanic” tells the stories of the many individuals who boarded that ill-fated ship. Unaware of the tragedy that awaits them, the third-class immigrants yearn for a better life in America, the second-class passengers dream of achieving a wealthier lifestyle and the millionaire barons of the first class envision that their power will endure forever. All the while, crew members reveal from their perspectives why the Titanic was going too fast, saw the iceberg too late and could not summon help to arrive in time. Winner of five 1997 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical!

INSPIRING AUDIENCES BEYOND THE STAGE: THE IMPACT OF HISTORY ~ SEPTEMBER 25 • 7:00 PM, LUC 111 Who are you, where did you come from and why should you care? ThE cApiTol sTEps Wednesday, October 24 • 7:30 PM Pealer Recital Hall, FSU Performing Arts Center “They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” – Larry King, CNN “The troupe has become a favorite on the Washington social circuit. Its political satire brings chuckles … rave reviews … guffaws … and bipartisan grins all around. The satire hits the mark.” – The Wall Street Journal Just in time for the 2012 presidential election, the skilled satirists of the Capitol Steps return to Frostburg for an uproarious evening of political comedy. The energetic troupe of Washington comedians emerged in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. Digging into the headlines, their legendary song parodies and skits convey a special brand of satirical humor. No matter which side of the political fence you’re on, the Capitol Steps are a side-splitting delight that serves as an antidote to campaign seriousness in all its forms. Come for this boisterous, ego-puncturing and – yes – even uplifting look at the chaos, the issues, the speeches, the posturing and the personalities that are all a part of an election year.

The Art of Giving . . . FRIENDS OF CES

As you make plans to enjoy the 2012-13 season, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Friends of CES program. Ticket sales account for only 25% of the cost of these internationally-touring, professional productions. Your donation not only ensures that we are able to continue presenting great performances, but it also assists with our arts integration, inspiring arts, and experiential arts programs. Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft said “… I have seen the critical role that the arts play in stimulating creativity and in developing vital communities….the arts have a crucial impact on our economy and are an important catalyst for learning, discovery, and achievement in our country.” Help CES to be a catalyst in the process of discovery in our own community. Friends of CES are “at the front of the line” when tickets first become available. As a Friend at the $500 level or higher, you will receive advance notice of all performances and priority handling of your pre-season ticket orders. We encourage you to join our circle of Friends and include your tax-deductible contribution with your ticket order. If you prefer to make your contribution online, visit www.frostburg.edu/foundation/donor-form and be sure to designate “I would like my gift to benefit… “Cultural Events Series.” If you are interested in learning more about specific opportunities within CES that are in need of funding, please call Mary Jane Plummer.
