2017-2018 Looking to the Future … Creating a Culture of Engagement The arts are a reflection of the world around us – a world that has never been viewed as more complex and vibrant than it is today. Our environment is being shaped by a world whose borders continue to blur. New technologies continuously reimagine the ways in which the arts are created and presented, while changing demographics redefine how audiences engage in the arts. As CES patrons, you have told us that you appreciate the diversity of our series and that you want to deepen your engagement in our programs. CES is committed to bringing our tri-state community together as we reaffirm our role as a regional steward of the performing arts. We remain steadfast in our mission of presenting live performances, educational outreach and experiential learning opportunities to our students, patrons and presenting artists. As we look toward the future, allow me to restate our goals: • Cultivate the next generation of arts participants • Enhance patron experience with deepened educational outreach opportunities • Maintain an unwavering commitment to artistic excellence • Broaden our marketing and communication efforts to meet 21st-century needs • Encourage active involvement as volunteers, donors and audience members What to expect in our 2017-18 presenting season? A glorious program of classical music is in store when Moscow’s finest young string ensemble, the Russian String Orchestra, brings its trademark virtuosity, high energy and warmth to the Pealer Recital Hall. The program includes Gioacchino Rossini’s playful Sonata for Strings, written by the composer at the young age of 12; Sergey Prokofiev’s vibrant Visions Fugitives, Opus 22; and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Serenade for Strings, Opus 48. Under the baton of founder and music director, Misha Rachlevsky, the Russian String Orchestra is recognized internationally for impassioned performances that linger in the soul long after the last note has been played. Born in the countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Joan Soriano fashioned his first guitar from fishing line and a discarded metal box. Today, he is known as “El Duque de la Bachata” – the Duke of Bachata. The Miami New Times proclaimed that he “seems to embody the very history of his music.” Bachata is essential to the Dominican culture, drawing on a variety of musical influences from Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. As the undisputed master of the genre, Soriano infuses his music with down-to-earth spirit, punchy guitar-based rhythms and gutsy, street-born attitude.

Lobby, FSU Lewis J. Ort Library The Ort Library highlights the Great Hunger that affected Ireland from 1845-1852 and the contributions these new immigrants made to the United States in a display from the library’s collections.
Offstage Series With WFWM CES joins forces with Frostburg State University’s own WFWM-FM to present the Offstage Series With WFWM. After select performances, WFWM station director Chuck Dicken joins the artists onstage for a lively interactive discussion with the audience.

Teachers are invited to bring their classes to attend an educational school-day performance. Based on E.L. Konigsburg’s classic book, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler takes viewers up the stone steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and into the middle of a mysterious adventure. The hour-long musical is especially recommended for grades 2-6. Renaissance STEAM Fair DATES TBD Based on Arts for the School Day Reservations

Immerse yourself in the time of the Italian Renaissance, when artists such as Michelangelo created masterful works. The program engages children in a series of fun, hands-on learning experiences with teaching artists from the Evergreen Heritage Center. Activities reinforce themes from the play, which follows a mystery involving what may or may not be a Michelangelo statue.
Learning Stations The Science Behind the Paint
Children will compare three different types of paint used by the great Renaissance artists. Using traditional tools and methods, they will work with egg tempera to experience grinding and mixing dry pigment from natural minerals.
Hide and Seek in the Museum
Using the music of the Italian Renaissance, children will experiment with the creative process of dance improvisation. Each time the music stops, participants will hide in plain sight in an imaginary museum setting.
Renaissance Inventions
Children will learn about the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance-era masters who developed the printing press, parachute and hoisting gear. Then, with assigned scenarios and tasks, they will be challenged to create their own inventions.

Driving Directions to Frostburg State University Frostburg State University is located in the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland. Traveling on I-68, take Exit 33, Frostburg. Turn onto Braddock Road toward Frostburg and travel about 1 mile to the main entrance to the FSU campus, on the left. After turning left, make an immediate right into the parking lot and proceed to parking in front of the Pealer Center. Refer to the map for additional parking. NOTE: The venue address is provided for events not held on campus.

Gift Certificates
Gift certificates can be purchased at the box office for any amount and may be used for any performance.
Box Office Information Venue Seating
LIVE! at StarScape and On the EDGE offer table seating in a club-style atmosphere, complete with food and bar available before, during and after the performance. Most other performances are reserved continental seating unless specified.
Special Accommodations
FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. Please advise the ticket agent PRIOR to purchasing tickets when special seating is required. The Lane University Center Box Office will direct your request for special accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office: 301.687.4102 (VRO 1.800.735.2258). Frostburg State University is a smoke-free campus.
Ticket Mailing and Will Call
All tickets orders received within a week of the performance will be held at Will Call. Please arrive 30-45 minutes prior to the published start time to pick up Will Call tickets at the venue box office. If you prefer e-tickets, they can be printed at home.
Parking and Seating
To receive the most up-to-date information regarding parking and seating, please provide the Lane University Center Box Office with a current email address. Updates regarding parking conflicts and/or suggestions are emailed within four days of the performance date.
Lost or Misplaced Tickets
If you can’t find your tickets, call the Lane University Center Box Office at 301.687.3137 to have duplicate tickets waiting for you at Will Call or emailed to you. Please note that we scan tickets at the performance entrance, and once tickets are reprinted, previously issued tickets are no longer valid for admission.
Refunds
Refunds are given only in the case of an event cancellation or date change.
Children
All persons, regardless of age, must have a ticket for admission. Our box office staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding child-appropriate performances.
Late Arrivals
Patrons arriving after the start of the show will be admitted at an appropriate break or intermission; decisions are made at the discretion of the staff based on the nature of the performance and the artist’s requests.
Inclement Weather Policy
In case of inclement weather, please call the box office at 301.687.3137 or the University Information Desk at 301.687.4411 for updates on performances. If a performance is cancelled, every effort will be made to exchange tickets for an alternate or rescheduled performance, or refunds will be issued.
