THE CULTURAL EVENTS SERIES ... AND YOU

We have a saying here to maintain perspective: “You’re only as good as your last show.” After our spectacular 2010-2011 season – which embodied the three main components of the ultimate cultural events series: live performance, educational outreach and experiential education – we were feeling good about our “last show.” The problem is, how can we top it this season?

We’re also excited to introduce the new LIVE! at StarScape series where you can experience stellar performances (the Stars) in a club-style setting (the Scape), gathered with your friends around small tables while you enjoy your favorite beverages and light fare.

Well, we think our line-up for the upcoming season will do just that! This season, come ready to be amazed by

We look forward to sharing our newest venue, the recently renovated Lane University Center, as well as continuing to provide events that engage and encourage the audience to be part of a culture that will always appreciate the arts.

SQUONK OPERA – “ASTRO-RAMA” Wednesday, August 31 & Thursday, September 1 – After Sunset (9:00 PM) Upper Quad, Frostburg State University Campus

Join us under the stars when Pittsburgh’s innovative Squonk Opera returns to Frostburg with “Astro-rama.” While attempting to make contact with alien intelligence from far-flung galaxies, the Squonk musicians rise high above the audience in scissor-lifts and cherry pickers. With the help of the giant robot PAL 9000, they compose a musical multimedia message from the residents of Earth. Finally, the artists tilt a 45-foot radio telescope dish into space and transmit the message toward 51 Pegasus, the first non-solar planet discovered. This witty and timely exploration of science and belief is made accessible with pop culture and sci-fi references. Bring your lawn chair, your picnic blanket and your family to the upper quad of the FSU campus and help us kick off an exciting season. “An American, terrestrial and perhaps galaxy original … a unique mix of geek and polish, eccentric design and mocking wit.” – Pittsburgh Post Gazette Presented with Student and Educational Services, Student and Community Involvement and University Programming Council

Paul Taylor, one of the most revered American choreographers of the 20th and 21st centuries, is the last living member of the pantheon that forged America’s indigenous art form: modern dance. At 81 – an age when most artists’ best work is behind them – Taylor continues to win acclaim for the vibrancy, relevance and power of his recent dances as well as his classics. Since its inception over 50 years ago, the Paul Taylor Dance Company has become a celebrated and prominent member of the international dance community. During their visit to Western Maryland, these world-class dancers will present an electrifying evening of Taylor’s masterful works both new and old. “Paul Taylor is the reigning master of modern dance.” – Time Magazine Sponsored by Gary Horowitz

COMPAGÑIA FLAMENCA JOSÉ PORCEL – “GYPSY FIRE” Tuesday, November 8, at 7:30 PM Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall, FSU Lane University Center

The passionate music and dance of Flamenco developed in the gypsy communities of southern Spain. In 2010, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization declared it to be a precious form of cultural expression and heritage by recognizing it as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” Featuring some of the world’s most acclaimed flamenco dancers and musicians, Compagñia Flamenca José Porcel is renowned for performances that radiate with the passion, vitality and intensity characteristic of this art form. As Spain’s foremost flamenco company, they bring the age-old gypsy traditions of Andalucía to life with an energy that is sure to delight audience members. “A musical savant, a charismatic personality and a master improviser ... Porcel commanded the stage, drawing much tension from oases of repose, suddenly exploding into episodes of staccato footwork.” – Allan Ulrich, Voice of Dance P resented with Latin American Student Organization ARTS FOR ENRICHMENT Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel Masterclass See page 14 for more details

BETTYE LAVETTE Friday, September 16, at 8:00 PM Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall, FSU Lane University Center

Veteran soul singer and Grammy Award nominee Bettye LaVette arrives in September to present a passionate performance. LaVette’s expressive voice is full of raw emotion and spectacular intensity that critics have praised wholeheartedly. The New Yorker declared that she “can deliver a heartbroken wail through a whisper or make a slow ballad pulse like scorching gospel rock,” and Entertainment Weekly dubbed her “a force of nature we’ll just have to settle on labeling as awesome,“ while The New York Times said that “this is soul singing at its rawest and most persuasive.” “Ms. LaVette, 64, now rivals Aretha Franklin as her generation’s most vital soul singer. She uses every scrape, shout and break in her raspy voice, with a predator’s sense of timing, to seize the drama of a song.” – The New York Times Sponsored by Gary Horowitz

SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE – “THE MUSIC OF STEVIE WONDER” Saturday, October 8, at 8:00 PM Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall, FSU Lane University Center

SFJAZZ Collective has quickly become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the international jazz scene. The all-star ensemble was created in 2004 as a commitment to promoting jazz as a living, significant art form. Their innovative approach honors jazz history while advancing the genre’s current direction. For their 2011 tour, SFJAZZ Collective takes on the timeless melodies of pop music icon Stevie Wonder. Wonder’s impact on American musicians and songwriters of all genres is presented to full effect in this glorious musical tribute. The Collective’s 2011 ensemble features MacArthur Genius Grant winner Miguel Zenón on alto sax and flute, Guggenheim Fellow Edward Simon on piano, Grammy Award-nominated vibraphonist Stefon Harris and leading jazz masters Mark Turner on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, trombonist Robin Eubanks, Matt Penman on bass and Eric Harland on drums. “The Collective demonstrates that decades-old music needn’t lose its contemporary relevance – not, at least, in the hands of a group this encyclopedic in its knowledge of tradition, but just as versed in the foundation of jazz as a living, breathing and forward-reaching thing. As definitive of the modern mainstream as it gets.” – All About Jazz

Saturday, February 11, at 8:00 PM Windsor Hall, Town Centre, Cumberland

Songwriter and jazz vocalist René Marie is blessed with a sensuous voice and a style that incorporates elements of jazz, soul, blues and gospel. Although she did not begin her professional career until the age of 42, her performances reveal the strength and stamina of her character; she often explains that finding herself through singing gave her the courage to leave an abusive marriage. Unmistakably honest and unpretentious, she has transformed audiences worldwide with her powerful interpretations, electrifying deliveries and impassioned vocals. Since 1996, she has encountered a whirlwind of success and critical acclaim – from the Los Angeles Times to The Washington Post to the Chicago Tribune. She has appeared as the headliner at major festivals, such as the Kennedy Center’s prestigious Women In Jazz festival, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in Scotland and the Shanghai Jazz Festival in China. She has also received several prestigious awards, including Best International Jazz Vocal CD by the Académie Du Jazz, the oldest and most independent awards organization in France.
