2016.2017 Diamonds have become the recognized symbol for celebrating a 60th anniversary. Diamond is derived from the Greek word adamas, which means unconquerable and enduring. It is also believed that the fire in the diamond symbolizes the constant flame of love. Although I recognize this is usually referring to 60 years of marriage, I can guarantee you that it is also fitting for our CES program at Frostburg State University. We have been fanning the flame of love for the arts for 60 years! As we began developing this special 2016-17 season, we were determined not only to move forward, but also to take this opportunity to look back in our celebration of the arts. This year you will find a season that features an array of international artists as well as the return of some of our favorites from the past. We are excited to offer at least one performer from almost every continent – what a great way to fulfill the FSU tagline of “One University. A World of Experiences” – and the return of The Capitol Steps (2004/2008/2012), The Mystical Arts of Tibet (2002), Maryland Symphony Orchestra (2002-2016) and A Winter Solstice (1993). In addition, many of our upcoming performances will take you on a trip down memory lane as they remind you of past performances. For example, if you remember jazz icons such as Herbie Hancock, Poncho Sanchez, Dave Valentin and others, then you will be thrilled that the Hammond B3 master, Dr. Lonnie Smith, will heat up our LIVE! at StarScape in April; or if you were enthralled by the daring artists of STREB in our 2009-2010 season, then you won’t want to miss the jawdropping acrobatic dancers of Australia’s Gravity and Other Myths in November. These are just a few examples of what lies ahead in our 60th season celebration! As you celebrate 60 years with us this season, you will also notice some changes as we position ourselves for 60 more years. We invite you to: • Join CES as a member and enjoy the members-only benefits.

• Visit our new easy-to-use CES ticketing portal and purchase your tickets online any day and any time and print them at home.

• Help us ensure a future of at least 60 more years by contributing to our 60th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign.

• Celebrate the past 60 years through our interactive history website and lobby displays.

• ENJOY THE CELEBRATION WITH US!

Celebrating 60 Years Since 1956, when Frostburg State University presented the now world-famous Joffrey Ballet in its premiere performance, FSU has served as a prominent community arts presenter. The University’s Cultural Events Series (CES) offers an annual professional performing arts season involving international artists whose presence might otherwise be unheard of in a rural region. Legendary, world-class performers in diverse performing arts genres have graced CES stages over the years, including the Martha Graham Dance Company, country and bluegrass musician Kathy Mattea, actors John Astin and Jack Klugman, and The Acting Company. Add to these a multitude of GRAMMY nominees and winners.

To further contribute to the local arts environment, an annual schedule of supplementary activities ensures that community members are able to connect with professional artists beyond performance attendance. Examples include lectures, workshops, masterclasses, children’s performances and even opportunities for community members to appear onstage with the artists. Another significant component of CES is the Experiential Education Program, which provides FSU students with valuable curricular and co-curricular experiences. Working behind the scenes, hard-working students gain firsthand experiences in the professional world and develop essential life skills in time management, collaboration, teamwork and leadership. Each year brings new commitment to provide greater accessibility to the world of the arts. We trust that long after our programs have ended, community members will remember their experiences and maintain an avid appreciation for the arts. We look forward to the next 60 years!

Four stars from the original cast of Broadway’s Jersey Boys reunite with a live band for a high-octane concert-style performance celebrating the music that defined the 1960s. Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award nominee J. Robert Spencer shared the Broadway stage for more than 1,000 performances. Now they come together for an electrifying and soulful new production with top-shelf choreography, incredible vocal performances and legendary onstage chemistry. The New York Times says, “Sidling up to the microphone, the singers had the air of the Rat Pack, Motown and a nightclub act rolled into one,” while the New York Daily News proclaims, “The Midtown Men sound as crisp as their Rat Pack-inspired suits. Their voices blend together so flawlessly on stage.” VIP Package includes seating in the first two rows along with a special pre-show reception and Meet and Greet photo opportunity with the artist. “ The troupe has become a favorite on the Washington social circuit. Its political satire brings chuckles, … rave reviews, … guffaws … and bipartisan grins all around. The satire hits the mark.” – The Wall Street Journal

What to Expect When You’re Electing WEDNESDAY, OCT. 26 | 7:30 PM

Pealer Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center Just in time for the 2016 presidential election, the skilled satirists of the Capitol Steps present an uproarious evening of political comedy. These Washington comedians emerged in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to lampoon the very people and places that employed them. Digging into the headlines, the Capitol Steps’ song parodies and skits convey a special brand of humor. Sidesplitting bipartisan fun serves as an antidote to campaign seriousness in all its forms. It’s a boisterous, ego-puncturing and – yes – even uplifting look at the chaos, the issues, the speeches, the posturing and the personalities that are all a part of an election year.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet

Richard Gere and Sacred Music, Sacred Dance ADrepung Loseling

THURSDAY, MARCH 9 | 7:30 PM

Pealer Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center The Tibetan Monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to Frostburg for an extraordinary five-day residency endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The performance of Sacred Music, Sacred Dance combines chanting, music and dance with a goal of world healing. Pieces are drawn from the authentic Tibetan temple dances and music that have been performed for thousands of years. Drepung Loseling monks are renowned for multiphonic chanting, known as zokkay (complete chord). Chantmasters simultaneously intone three notes, each individually creating a complete chord. Robed in colorful, intricate costumes and playing traditional instruments, the monks invite audiences to experience the beauty of their ancient culture. The New York Times described the experience as “remarkable … the music and the dance invoke sacred ecstasy.” CES MEMBERS ONLY $19.20 ADULT $24.00 UNDER 17/ FSU STAFF $21.60 FSU STUDENT $5.00

“Tibetan Buddhist culture has a distinctive contribution to make to the world’s precious common heritage. I feel sure that Drepung Loseling Monastery’s … tours will deepen the appreciation of our culture. It is my hope that everyone witnessing these events may find in them inspiration and understanding that in some way contribute to their own inner peace.”

– His Holiness the Dalai Lama

About the Monks

Drepung Monastery was established near Lhasa, Tibet, in 1416. It had four departments, of which Loseling, or The Hermitage of the Radiant Mind, was the largest, housing more than three-quarters of Drepung’s 10,000 to 15,000 monks. After the 1959 Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet and the destruction of its 6,500 monasteries, 250 monks left Tibet and rebuilt their institution in India. Over the years, young spiritual aspirants have fled occupied Tibet and sought entrance into the monastery, which houses over 2,500 monks. Ancient societies throughout the world conceived that ritual performance of sacred music and dance at auspicious times establishes communication with higher powers, bringing about healing on environmental, social and personal levels. During Tibetan spiritual festivals, people from surrounding villages assembled at the monastery for several days of sacred music and dance. The monks have toured the world for more than 25 years. They were featured on the Golden Globenominated soundtrack for the film Seven Years in Tibet. Two of their albums have appeared in the Top 10 of U.S. music charts and they have shared the stage with artists such as Phillip Glass, Michael Stipe, the Beastie Boys, Paul Simon, Patti Smith and Sheryl Crow.

Experience Tibetan Culture Mandala Sand Painting The Architecture of Enlightenment

SUNDAY, MARCH 5, THROUGH THURSDAY, MARCH 9

Lewis J. Ort Library

Mandala sand painting has its roots in the tantric legacy of Buddhist India, extending back more than 20,000 years. The lamas painstakingly lay millions of grains of sand to create the traditional iconography of ancient spiritual symbols. They begin by drawing an outline of the mandala on a wooden platform. Over the next five days, colored sands are delicately poured from traditional metal funnels called chak-purs. On completion, the sands are swept up and placed in an urn. To fulfill the function of healing, half of the sand is distributed to spectators, while the remainder is dispersed in a nearby body of flowing water to carry the healing blessing to the ocean; from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.

Visit the Lewis J. Ort Library throughout the week to observe the monks creating the mandala.

Mandala Creation Daily Schedule SUNDAY | 3 - 7 PM MONDAY - WEDNESDAY | 10 AM - 7 PM THURSDAY | 10 AM - NOON

Mandala Opening Ceremony SUNDAY, MARCH 5 | 3 PM The monks consecrate the mandala site with traditional chants, music and mantra recitation.

Mandala Closing Ceremony THURSDAY, MARCH 9 | NOON The monks dismantle the sand mandala for dispersal in a nearby body of flowing water. Half of the sand is distributed to observers as blessings for personal health and healing.

Which mandala would you like to see the monks create during their visit? Be sure to vote in our online survey, which will be included in our monthly Inspiring Arts newsletter. The 60th Anniversary CES season closes in spectacular fashion with the return of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of Music Director Elizabeth Schulze, whom The Washington Post calls “a superb conductor,” MSO will fill the Pealer Recital Hall with the music of Ludwig von Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto and Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op 67. Joining MSO is guest artist Yuliya Gorenmen. The Russian-born musician has rightfully been called a “pianist without fear.” With artistic fire and a fluid, unpretentious technique, she has become known for the lyrical honesty and generosity of her playing. She first achieved international acclaim as a prizewinner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium. She has since performed solo, chamber and orchestral concerts throughout the United States and Europe. CES MEMBERS ONLY $28.80 ADULT $36.00 UNDER 17/ FSU STAFF $32.40 FSU STUDENT $10.00

Dr. Lonnie Smith SATURDAY, APRIL 22 | 7:30 PM

Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall Lane University Center A legendary master of the Hammond B-3 organ for more than five decades, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been hailed as a musical icon. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste illustrates that no genre is safe. Jazz Times playfully describes him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban,” while the Chicago Times gushed, “When organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith sits down at the Hammond B-3, it’s all about soul. Not speed, not flash, not tricky riffs – just hard-core, deepdown feeling. …” “Jazz is American classical,” says Smith. “And this music is a reflection of what’s happening at the time. … The organ is like the sunlight, rain and thunder. … it’s all the worldly sounds to me!”
