2015.2016 It’s often said that things improve with time and age. This is certainly the case with wine and cheese and even friendships! It’s also said that good things come to those who wait. So, what does any of this have to do with our 2015-16 CES season? I’d like to think that our new season demonstrates how we’ve improved with time and age, and that good things definitely do come to those who wait. This season you’ll see the return of Broadway-style musical theatre with the presentation of Flashdance – The Musical. You’ll enjoy classical music with the return of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. You’ll also see the return of the CES concert when Grammy-winning rock artist Daughtry performs in the Cordts PE Center Main Arena. You might also notice something brand new. We encourage you to check out the cutting-edge artists included in our

new On the EDGE series. These performances take place in a cool club setting complete with food and beverages. We hope you will join us On the EDGE. Perhaps the most exciting component of improving over time is the news that next year, in our 2016-17 season, we will celebrate our 60th anniversary. We’d like to think that we have improved over the past 60 years of presenting professional performances at Frostburg State University. We look forward to celebrating our accomplishments and planning for the future as we launch a campaign to raise $60,000 for our 60th anniversary. I look forward to sharing our history and building a future with you. I hope you will enjoy the season’s offerings and join with us to help shape the future of CES.

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail

Join us for a festive weekend of Appalachian heritage, culture and history. The Crooked Road celebrates the traditional Appalachian music of southwest Virginia that has been preserved by communities since colonial times. It’s a rich music tradition that is as vibrant today as it was for the listeners and musicians of previous generations. Three Crooked Road artists will appear in Frostburg during Steel Wheels Weekend.

The Whitetop Mountain Band

l

Bluegrass musician and master storyteller Sandy Shortridge conveys the emotions and pride felt by many mountain people.

l

The Whitetop Mountain Band epitomizes traditions of old-time singing, fiddling, banjo picking, ballads and flat-foot dance.

l

Adam McPeak & Mountain Thunder provides a distinctive blend of bluegrass and beautiful vocal harmonies.

Events coincide with Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s annual Steel Wheels Weekend. Exhibits about folk music, railroad and coal-mining history will be displayed in Frostburg’s Arts and Entertainment District.

His award-winning albums defy and honor the banjo’s long role in the world’s music. Focusing on songs collected by legendary folklorist Alan Lomax (1915-2002), the Lomax Project reimagines traditional music from up and down the North American continent, including Bahamian sea chanties, African-American a cappella singing, ancient Appalachian ballads and work songs collected from well-known musicians and everyday folk.

“ This is a piece of absolute enchantment. We were in the palm of his hand for every second of one of the tenderest, most life-affirming shows. ...” – The Scotsman, Edinburgh “ This production, like much of Indian Ink’s earlier repertoire, has the power to move across cultures, classes and eras to create something truly great and utterly entertaining.”

The Elephant Wrestler Follow the humble tea seller Kusitar as he solves life’s mysteries from his chai stand in India’s Bangalore train station. Inspired by the traditional Indian folk tale of Punchkin and featuring live music, it’s at once heartbreakingly beautiful and outrageously funny. The Sydney Morning Herald picked The Elephant Wrestler as “one of the theatrical highlights of 2010,” while the New Zealand Listener named it the “feel-good production of the year.” Founded in New Zealand in 1997, Indian Ink blends Western theatrical traditions with Eastern flavors and has been praised for its use of live music, humor, pathos and skillful storytelling. Their use of the “serious laugh” – employing laughter to reveal deeper themes – is central to their approach. International tours have brought great acclaim, including two Fringe First Awards at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. GENERAL ADMISSION ADULT
