DEAR READERS, Without a doubt, choosing the right watch for a specific occasion is a question of style, and there is no question that Swiss watches have a defining influence on style. In our latest issue of INSIGHT by Carl F. Bucherer, we show you how Swiss design and style are conquering the world, taking you on a journey to architectural highlights and works of art all around the globe that have a stronger Swiss influence than might be immediately apparent. To complement their stylishly assured appearances, the two Friends of the Brand Puja Gupta and Lisa Haydon choose the feminine timepieces created by Carl F. Bucherer. The newest highlight is the multifaceted Pathos collection, whose design is reminiscent of many a filigree architectural masterpiece. Our report describes how Pathos came to be and how it acquired its exceptional form. We also offer an insight into the long history of ladies’ watches created by our company. As befits the cold season, our Friends of the Brand from the world of winter sports talk with us. They describe their fascination with skiing, their dreams, and their triumphs, and how important style is both on and off the slopes. Whether in architecture, design, or art, style plays a defining role—and design made in Switzerland does so most notably. I hope you find this an interesting read! Sincerely,

Sascha Moeri

INSIGHT FEATURE STORY

SWISS DESIGN IDENTITY AS A SIGNATURE Swiss design is a worldwide synonym of quality, and as for every example of good design the appeal is significant, but difficult to detect. Discover Swiss design products that you will find everywhere and that you may not recognize as Swiss in origin.

We use them on a daily basis, we peel our food with them, we read them, we drink out of them, we sit on them. We are surrounded by Swiss design objects without realizing it. Today, Swiss design has impacted the world. Take a closer look at some of these impressive examples. The exhibition “Familiar Unknown” (“Unbekannt-Vertraut”) held at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich in 1987 showcased for the first time a series of technical objects made in Switzerland since 1920, whose authors were largely unknown or misknown. Yet the quality of those products was self-evident as they improved the life of their users: Fixpencil pencil, Elna sewing machine, Sigg aluminum water bottle, Rex peeler, just to name a few. Swiss design is rooted in a tradition of precision mechanics, consistent implementation of projects, functionalism without decoration, and effective vocational education at the schools of arts and crafts. Swiss army knives are a typical example of Swiss design known worldwide. The official knife of the Swiss army is manufactured by Wenger, founded in 1893 in Courtetelle, near Delémont, and by Victorinox, founded in Ibach (Schwyz) in 1884. The blade and tools are stored inside the handle through a hinges mechanism, making this knife the symbol of products suitable for the extreme 6 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

conditions of military life: essential, precise, light, and multi-functional. The brand is nearly identical to the coat of arms of Switzerland, and these knives have traveled everywhere: they are present in the kits of NASA astronauts, have accompanied climbers on Mount Everest, and are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of

Modern Art in New York. The shape and aspect of Swiss army knives and cutlery are design icons, yet they can be changed, adapted, and interpreted. Tomo knife is a model designed by Kazuma Yamaguchi in 2011: it adds to Swiss perfection the minimalistic simplicity of Japanese design with a softer approach.

The launch in 2012 of the operative system iOS 6 for Apple iPhone and iPad was accompanied by a new design of the application Clock: an interface very familiar to the passengers of Swiss trains. The similarity was so evident that representatives of the Swiss federal railway were glad to acknowledge that Apple was employing the look of SBB clocks without authorization. The black rectangular hands for hours and minutes, and the red thinner hand with a dot on the tip for seconds are a protected trademark. Apple reportedly agreed to pay a lump sum of $ 21 millions to mount on each iPhone sold in the world a Swiss clock designed in 1944 by Hans Hilfiker for SBB stations.

But the most diffused and unreported symbol of Swiss design is the typeface Helvetica, designed by Max Miedinger with the supervision of Eduard Hoffmann for Haas type foundry in Münchenstein in 1957. Originally named Neue Haas Grotesk, it was marketed as Helvetica in 1960 in order to make it suitable for an international market and to ideally connect it to a tradition of Swiss Style, which made famous a group of Swiss German graphic designers in the 1950’s. A sans-serif font as ever-present as the air itself, this typeface is a symbol of modernity and simplicity. Helvetica is the standard typeface of choice for a variety of brands (Nestlé, 3M, Lufthansa, Microsoft) and visual communication systems (New York underground, Apple interfaces). It is by far the most ubiquitous Swiss artifact, due to its neutral perception and identification with “corporate” communication. For its fiftieth anniversary in 2007 it was celebrated with a book (Helvetica: homage to a typeface, Lars Müller Publisher), a documentary (Gary Hustwit, Helvetica, Plexifilm), and an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (50 Years of Helvetica curated by Christian Larsen). What is remarkable about Swiss design is in fact this worldwide diffusion; the market of Swiss design was hardly limited to Federal boundaries, yet it has reached a global audience since the post war period. The fame of Swiss designers who worked temporarily or permanently abroad, founding design agencies or collaborating with foreign clients and companies, contributed to the reputation of Swiss design abroad. This Swiss diaspora, due to educational, cultural, and economical reasons, has fostered a capillary diffusion of Swiss design all over the world in forms of architecture or design products.

INSIGHT FEATURE STORY Le Corbusier, Palace of Assembly, Chandigarh

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, known as Le Corbusier, was born in La Chaux-deFonds in 1887 and started traveling at the age of 19, eventually settling in Paris and opened a studio with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret in 1922. Le Corbusier, who became also a French citizen in 1930, designed and built architectural structures all over the world: in Moscow (Tsentrosoyuz, 1933), in La Plata (Curutchet house, 1953), in Tokyo (National Museum of Western Art, 1959), as well as in Europe. The impressive series of public buildings for Chandigarh, the capital of the Indian state of Punjab, allowed Le Corbusier to apply for the first time on a large scale the architectural principles of the Radiant City (high-rise buildings, free circulation, and large green spaces). The works by Le Corbusier are part of the Swiss tradition of precisely implemented and functional design, specifically the Modulor grid utilized in most of his 8 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

His buildings and product designs are strongly geometric, based on elemental shapes. The plastic bottle for Valser water, a cylindrical tower covered by a texture of bricks, was designed by Botta in 2000 and goes back to the roots of Swiss design; objects are designed to be “anonymous,” lacking stylistic signatures that would make them too personal, yet they are functional, solid, precise in their implementation, and they “speak” to an international audience of users.

INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL

ART AND DESIGN: INDIAN AESTHETICS, CULTURAL HISTORY AND COMMUNITY While contemporary design aesthetics speak in local as well as global languages, Indian design in particular straddles both of these forms of language with a unique language of its own. With the evolution of globalization and now in the midst of late capitalism, Indian design is one of the more accessible aspects of Indian culture that offers a nuanced understanding and mix of aesthetics, cultural history and community. by Renuka Sawhney

10 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

The aesthetics, philosophies, and theories of contemporary western design can be traced to modernism, in India the philosophic basis of design has more to do with the community to which it owes its beginnings than anything else. With the fracture of community life, the focus has shifted from the community to the global and as such design uses the global aesthetic languages to speak of a unique contemporary India, where the underlying historical depth goes deeper than a discussion of aesthetics, utility and process, but remains sufficiently accessible on the surface to affect fashion and aesthetics.

Lotus-Tempel in Delhi

Indian tastes in fashion, art and design have always been innovative and varied, but over the last 25 years, the taste for luxury goods in fashion and design have become sophisticated. With the advent of a global Indian, influences not only come from outside but travel around the globe with their fashionable owners. Historically, Indian Design is closer to fashion in the sense that it has more to do with aesthetics than it does with addressing the utilitarian aspects of design. For a considerable part of the country’s history, craft-based design was the norm, and the support and funding of craft guilds ensured the preservation of local cultural techniques around the country. At the beginning of independence and through the 60’s and 70’s, large scale manufacturing extended to industrial goods. It is only in the last 20-25 years that industrial design has taken on scale. However, Indian design in the contemporary global sense of the word is

only one of the few areas in India to reconcile the complexity and contradiction between traditions, contemporary culture, utility, craft and aesthetics. In contrast, where craft based, local techniques are expensive and bespeak an economic need to return to the basics in the rest of the world—regard the handmade and locally sourced materials and crafts sold from Brooklyn to Seattle to San Francisco—in India it is the norm.

In contrast, while design is economically accessible to the middle class, contemporary art is an entirely different beast. The complexities of India are not so easily reconciled in art, even though it too speaks in a global language using abstraction, video, photography and minimalism, the content of contemporary Indian art continues to be critical and confrontational.Nonetheless, following the meteoric growth of the art market over the last decade and the consequent slump, Indian art lacks teeth and its sensibilities have been blunted. Rather than moving towards an understanding of the ability of design to clarify sharply and aesthetically the center of an idea, just as images and drawings are meant to do, contemporary Indian art has become more design than design, more adept at adopting the surface aesthetic of design than understanding the complexity and history underneath, and as such contemporary art, while collectable, nullifies itself. INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10 – 11

INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL This trend has not gone unnoticed, however, and the focus has shifted to acquisitions of objects of historical significance, such as antiquities and their design related offshoots. From large items, such as furniture, to watches, a certain Indian aesthetic laden with history and elegance take precedence. In furniture, old mixes with the new and brings about a space of indulgence and historical sense. Newly minted auction houses such as Pundole’s and established firms such as Saffronart have already started the movement towards preservation. Their blockbuster sales of antiques offer a spectacular mixture of art nouveau, kitsch, and cultural gems. However, to truly see the evolution in Indian aesthetics one needs to look no further than fashion; high as well as street fashion- from couture to street fashion clothing and accessories. Indian Fashion serves as a barometer and a reflection of the aspirations and identity of Indian society. In the past, Indian Fashion has often maintained a fixed identity. With the evolution of the economy, and the open access to global markets the

12 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

concurrent evolution of fashion and design has kept pace. Puja Gupta, former Miss Universe 2007, model and actress and current brand ambassador of Carl F. Bucherer says, “In my opinion, the Indian aesthetic has evolved from a largely traditional sense of beauty that celebrated the history of India to one that is more comfortable embracing and incorporating more modern and global influences. Our choices today are educated and inspired by eclectic and international fashion. For example, traditional Indian wear now incorporates cuts, materials, embroideries and designs from all parts of the world. Importantly, we have embraced this leap forward in aesthetic as a society, and it is acceptable to wear the new avatars of the Indian dress in deeply traditional settings. It wouldn’t be a large stretch to say that the movie industry in India plays a large role in influencing fashion and style. To this extent, our current generation of actors and actresses play an important role in guiding their larger audiences about world fashion. Therefore, I aspire to make the right choices that maintain a balance of being respectful of

Puja Gupta –––

The model, actress, and “Friend of the Brand” of Carl F. Bucherer Puja Gupta received her breakthrough in 2007, when she won the title of Miss Universe India. She made her acting debut in the film “F.A.L.T.U.”. Since then, the model has quickly developed a successful career as an actress and has won roles in several other films. Besides spending time in the spotlight Puja is a strong supporter of the animal rights organisation PETA, campaigning for vegetarianism, and she also plays an active role in promoting AIDS awareness.

This balancing act, while precarious and subject to a variety of dissenting and public opinions, nonetheless signifies a certain confidence in the individuality of identity. This is where fashion is embedded with artistic vision, and where artistic vision – that exalted utopian view of the world mixes with the grit required to change it. Gupta embodies that self-determination in her charity work, she says, “I think as a tastemaker, I believe I have the responsibility to be a global citizen and inspire and influence my audience with a world view. To this extent, I humbly believe that I do have to take serious care to be educated about my lifestyle, my choices and the virtues by which I stand. The most serious commitment, I believe, of a global citizen is that she needs to be cognizant of her sphere

Indian tradition and embracing modern design. I can only hope as my sense of style continues to evolve, I can inspire others in a positive way.’”

of influence, and use her influence in a positive and impactful way. At the heart of it, I think it’s most important for me, as a global citizen, to think about how I can create a lasting positive impact. For me this means helping the less fortunate and embracing the joy of giving”. In dealing with the exigencies of living and working in India, as a contemporary woman, she has this to add: “The role of a woman in India is evolving.” Indian Fashion and Design have also become technologically adept. Not only is street fashion quirky, playful and largely INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10 – 13

INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Lisa Haydon –––

Lisa Haydon, supermodel, actress, designer, and “Friend of the Brand” of Carl F. Bucherer, harboured the desire to be a model and actress from an early age. Her dream became reality when she was 21. She has graced the catwalks of many famous brands at fashion shows and international events. Her breakthrough as an actress came when she won her first role in the film “Aisha”, a story based on Jane Austen’s novel “Emma”. The film was very successful and Lisa Haydon also made a name for herself as an actress.

constructed out of separates, but identity, previously fixed into performing roles for many women, is itself becoming fragmented and dispersed. However, traditional craft based work remains as an insertion and in some ways as an intervention of the artistic labor at work, claiming its place in postmodern India. Lisa Haydon, model, writer and brand ambassador for Carl F. Bucherer, says, “There will always be a craft based industry here. Even though we love to experiment with styles and trends, there are still fundamentals and cultural elements that will always be in demand... Again, for example, embroidery etc... When it comes to craftsmen there is a demand for even more skilled labor”. Into this mix of tastes from modernist and minimalist to quirky and skill based, a return to a classical aesthetic lives alongside a desire 14 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

to culturally integrate modern, and postmodern realities of India. Often an internally contradictory country with a gregarious culture and powerful history, India stands at the praxis of where homogeneity and individuality meet community and the global. With the power of a growing pocketbook and a younger demographic hungry to see homegrown aspirations take form, Indian tastes cannot be decisively pinned down. Yet, there is an equally growing desire to conserve and complement historical traditions rooted in community and the consequent desire to communicate these in a decidedly unique language, which finds an outlet in design, art and fashion.

Making of: How does a new watch collection come to be? The mission: To create something new. The brief: A round ladies’ watch in an innovative new design. Carl F. Bucherer, the Swiss brand with a long tradition, opens its workshop doors to Insight and shows how a watch is created.

This can be a particularly daunting challenge in the watchmaking industry. If one sets out to design a new collection, simply being different from others will not suffice. The collection must also have strong features of its own that give it an unmistakable character. The designers and developers at Carl F. Bucherer have set to work on the idea of

creating a round ladies’ wristwatch with unusual decorative features. They are focusing on the design of the case, which is to be filigree and striking. Kurt Allemann, Vice President Product, gathers ideas, regularly talks them over with experts, and takes feedback on various details.

Insight by Carl F. Bucherer Nº10 – 15

manufactory

This is his way of examining the feasibility of the ideas. The model is to combine the most precious materials, such as rose gold and diamonds. At the same time, the watch must radiate femininity and be comfortable to wear. Ergo, the case must be made lighter. This practical need has spawned the idea of creating a filigree open case to carry the movement. Draftsmen prepare the first design drawings by hand. This involves

experimenting and trying out various alternatives. What would look good? How should it be proportioned? The notes and sketches fill an entire file folder by the time they are complete. The sketches are then drawn up on the computer. These renderings already depict the color scheme and the materials. They provide a 3-D version of the model that allows its visual perfection to be scrutinized from every angle.

However, what looks good on the screen must also pass muster from a tactile standpoint. The next step is to create the first prototypes, and at this point both tactile and visual senses come into play. What does the watch feel like when worn? Does if fit snugly around the wrist, or is there something that may prove to be an irritant? Are there any details that reduce wearing comfort? Only when an optimum result is achieved at this

stage are the design plans for the final collection drawn up. Once the case design has been finalized, the team devotes its attention to the details. The dial, hands, and crown are to take up the special features of the case design. The watch then goes into production. Cases are made, dials are decorated, hands are put into place, and the movement is integrated. Finally, quality checks are conducted. A final decision is made in favor of a basic collection in various materials, with and without diamonds. Setting gems takes a steady hand, as every stone must be carefully and precisely positioned within the filigree network. The pavé work on the bracelet requires a particularly high level of craftsmanship. This expertise has been ingrained at Carl F. Bucherer for generations and is what enables this manufacturer to produce such exclusive pieces. A fitting name must also be found for the new collection, one that is not only agreeable to the ear but also fits in well with the collection lines already in existence. The new round ladies’ watch collection bears the name Pathos, which stands for grandeur and passion. The process of creating a watch normally takes several years. Once the initial idea is conceived, five years may go by before the finished product is launched on the market. The Pathos collection, however, was realized much more quickly. An exceptionally high-quality collection emerged from the initial idea within two years. This was possible primarily owing to the high level of expertise at Carl F. Bucherer and the coherent idea behind this unique collection. The Pathos collection offers an abundance of variety, and exciting new models will continue to be developed at Carl F. Bucherer in the future.

THE PATHOS COLLECTION —UNIQUELY FEMININE Unusual shapes, new visual stimuli, and an aesthetic never seen before. Design is much more than mere surfaces. For the Lucerne-based Carl F. Bucherer, a brand with a long tradition, visual virtuosity is one of the most important factors in its brand identity. Every timepiece has a character all its own, one that reflects the personality of its wearer. This high standard is evident also in the most recent women’s collection, Pathos, which combines unique design and precious materials. The new line delights the viewer with a completely new concept. One design feature, in particular, lends the timepiece an unmistakable character: the aureole. This filigree halo, elegantly embedded in the case, breaks the light into a brilliant display of a thousand hues and makes the wearer’s wrist gleam. One of the most enchanting elements of the design is the aureole, which presents an opportunity for endless variation in design and materials. Whether in a curved flame shape or a fascinating lattice structure, or fashioned out of stainless steel or 18-carat rose gold, every variety of the unusual halo possesses its own distinctive charm. The timepiece thus becomes the ideal expression

of feminine individuality without losing its unmistakable charisma. With a passion for unusual details, Carl F. Bucherer has created a graceful ladies’ watch defined by a special design vocabulary. Decorated with gentle flame-like ornaments, the white dial made of Nerolit reflects the light in a display of great aesthetic variety. A harmonious effect is created by the fine indices and Roman numerals made of rose gold, which underscore the refined character of the ladies’ watch. Studded with precious diamonds that ornament the case in a curved line, Pathos becomes the expression of feminine grace. Even the crown fits in perfectly with the visual concept that makes the timepiece so exceptional. It, too, is covered by a lattice structure and gives the watch’s design an elegant finishing touch. The breathtaking culmination of the Pathos collection is the majestic Pathos Haute Joaillerie. An aesthetic masterpiece, this timepiece demonstrates the expertise of Carl F. Bucherer in combining first-class

watchmaking craftsmanship and the high art of jewelry making. Set in a case made of pure white gold, innumerable diamonds bring this magnificent ladies’ watch to radiant life. The baguette and diamond cut precious stones are painstakingly and individually embedded by hand, making the dial shimmer in the shape of a feminine hourglass. The aureole, studded with luxurious diamonds, attracts universal attention. Completing the exclusive timepiece is a bracelet that, like the dial and case, is gracefully ornamented with diamonds. With its aesthetic perfection, the Pathos collection marks a new peak in a long tradition of extraordinary, standard-setting ladies’ watches by Carl F. Bucherer. The individual masterpieces created by Carl F. Bucherer have always opened up new horizons in design and innovation. The Pathos collection continues the tradition of revealing, through trailblazing design, previously undiscovered possibilities—as an expression of multifaceted femininity and character.

HISTORY & TRADITION

DEDICATED TO THE LADIES A Swiss history of the feminine timepiece: For nearly 100 years the Swiss manufacturer Carl F. Bucherer has been designing and making ladies’ watches whose unique appearance dazzles the eye. Created to captivate, the ladies’ watches that line the chronology of Carl F. Bucherer are unique pieces of jewelry that are always ahead of their time. In 1919 Carl Friedrich Bucherer and his two sons launched their first ladies’ watch collection, which was designed entirely in the art deco style. This was a revolutionary step, as scarcely anyone at that time recognized the innovative potential of the wristwatch. The decorative timepieces quickly won a place on ladies’ wrists.

20 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

GLITTERING TIMES Dazzling watches, usually made of fine materials such as platinum and diamonds and featuring a filigree design, characterized the following decades as well. In the 1930’s watches with unusual shapes enjoyed increasing popularity. The brooch watch in the form of a horse-drawn carriage is made of silver and studded with marcasite. Hidden behind the carriage door is the watch, which has been mounted with the 12 at the bottom to make the watch easier to read. Also

legendary are the delicate ladies’ watches with leather straps. The cases, which are often narrow, are made of platinum, and the dials are usually ornamented in a manner typical of the times. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the precious metal gold dominated the Lucerne-based brand. The straps became bigger and transformed the timepiece as a whole into a piece of jewelry. Many dials were skillfully hidden behind richly ornamented lids that lend the watches an unusual charm. Created from precious materials and decorated with filigree elements, the end

result is a magnificent accessory. Around the middle of the century, an abundance of variations in the shape of the case emerged. Whether round, square, rectangular, or oval, the designer’s fancy was given free reign. This is a trend that would continue to assert itself in the decades to follow.

SHIMMERING GEMS Truly precious pieces made of white or yellow gold were created in the ensuing period. Some timepieces were ornamented with new, unusual dial shapes that make the watches look like jewelry at first glance. It is only on the second glance that the observer becomes aware of the dial. The Swiss company also created delicate timepieces that gracefully hug the wrist and skillfully underscore the radiant beauty of the wearer. Another piece wholly dedicated to beauty is the lipstick watch. On the underside of the marcasite lipstick tube, well protected under an elegantly designed lid, a timepiece is hidden. By the 1970’s the Swiss watchmaker already had a knack for unusual combinations of exclusivity and functionality.

AN ILLUSTRIOUS FUTURE Ladies’ watches have always been important to Carl F. Bucherer, perhaps as a reflection of the art and skill of watchmaking and jewelry making so deeply rooted in the company. On the other hand, Carl F. Bucherer continues to create fresh and distinctive timepieces that delight the world.

This is a challenge that Carl F. Bucherer takes on with enthusiasm. The concept underlying each of these elegant watches is always thought out in every detail. The Alacria line, for example, embodies femininity with its curved edges, while the Pathos collection captures the charming radiance of the wearer. The watches also underscore the wearer’s strength of character and are a tribute to women who were ahead of their time. Wilhelmina Bucherer-Heeb, the wife of Carl Eduard Bucherer—the founder’s son—died tragically in a ship accident at a young age. A dedicated businesswoman, she was a constant source of support to her husband and contributed decisively to the success of the business. In 2005, to preserve the memory of this strong woman, Carl F. Bucherer created a series of ladies’ watches, limited to 70 pieces, featuring a modern interpretation of the art deco style. The stories behind these fascinating people have inspired the watches of Carl F. Bucherer, capturing their spirit in a unique way. Now and in the future, these watches will remain true to their promise to tell more than just the time. INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10 – 21

DAVOS – A PERFECT DAY Davos is always in season—whether it’s winter or summer, the little Swiss mountain town has very special insights and outlooks to offer. INSIGHT by Carl F. Bucherer spends the day with Josef Lauber, Managing Director of Bucherer Davos, accompanying him to his favorite locations.

8:00 a.m.

Davos

“Davos is uniquely situated,” declares Josef Lauber. “As the highest-altitude European town, it gives you the impression of being on a high plateau.” Points all around Davos command a fantastic view of the town and a spectacular panoramic view of the Alps. A magnificent way to start the day!

Hotel Edelweiss

9:00 a.m.

Rolls fresh from the oven, aromatic coffee, and delicious muesli—Josef Lauber cannot recommend the breakfast buffet in the Hotel Edelweiss highly enough. “Indulgence in a relaxed atmosphere—I find it simply marvelous,” he says. And that, reports the trained watchmaker, is how you could generally characterize Davos. “Davos is a town that has preserved its village charm. You quickly feel comfortable and at home here.”

30 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

10:00 a.m.

Town center Going for a walk among the old buildings, visiting the Winter Sports Museum or one of the medieval churches—the town’s atmosphere meanders between historical and modern. The city’s ice stadium exemplifies the same spirit. “Shaped like an oyster and designed with a great deal of wood, the stadium radiates a very warm and natural atmosphere. But at the same time it’s also a modern facility that is constantly being modernized,” says Lauber in describing the building. “And it’s generally said that all sports enthusiasts should attend a hockey game there at least once in their lives, preferably the Spengler Cup games in late December.”

The Jakobshorn

12:00 p.m.

The peak of the Jakobshorn is reached by taking the GüggelBahn, which at 254 meters is the shortest public cable car in Switzerland. “Once you’ve arrived, you can really relax. Preferably over rösti or other Swiss dishes, while letting your gaze wander, of course, ” says Lauber. “And “Taking a little time-out is important to him. “I often work a seven-day week, as our retail business is open every day during the high season. It is important then to schedule little resting points for myself and to unwind.”

Café Weber 4:00 p.m.

2:00 p.m.

The slopes!

Davos is a place where winter sports beckon. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding … whatever strikes one’s fancy—the pistes are always extremely well-prepared. “One really intriguing feature is that the crosscountry route runs straight through Davos—and serves as a golf course in the summer,” says Lauber, who is himself a sports enthusiast.

Chocolates or tortes—Davos is home to several cafés and pastry shops offering sweet delicacies. “The nut torte in the Café Weber is pure poetry,” raves Lauber.

Monstein Brewery

5:00 p.m.

The Monstein Brewery has been brewing beer since 2000. It is located at the highest altitude of any brewery in Switzerland and was set up on a former Alpine dairy farm. “There are different offerings for visitors every day—and a great many fantastic beer varieties.” Lauber thinks highly of the brewery. He sets great store by craftsmanship, tradition, and the importance to everyone—whether individuals or businesses—of going one’s own way. “If that then leads to something extraordinary, then I am thrilled.”

Hotel Schatzalp

6:00 p.m.

The town of Davos also enjoys a reputation as a health resort. It inspired the Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann to write his novel “The Magic Mountain”, the plot of which is set in the Hotel Schatzalp. To this day you can sense the charm of a bygone era. You can also savor a unique atmosphere in the Waldhotel, the former forest sanatorium where Thomas Mann’s wife Katia once cured her ailments. “Incidentally, in Mann und Co., the gourmet restaurant in the Waldhotel, you can enjoy first-rate dining. You can admire the magnificent panorama at the same time,” recommends Lauber.

10:00 p.m.

Hotel Grischa

8:00 p.m.

Posthotel Morosani “If you’re looking for something classic, fine, and elegant, then dinner in the Posthotel Morosani is just the thing,” recommends the managing director. Lovingly prepared haute cuisine dishes are served in the restaurant’s art nouveau ambience. “A delight for all the senses!”

ZAI—BOARDS THAT MEAN THE WORLD There’s no question that skiing means adventure. Downhill runs on untouched slopes with clear air in your lungs and adrenaline coursing through your veins: skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts all over the world love this feeling. However sportspeople seldom give much thought to the skis upon which they embark on this

34 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº10

adventure. Discovering what is concealed within a ski becomes a journey of adventure into another dimension. The Swiss ski manufacturer zai uses some particularly unusual materials. Granite, cedar, vulcanized rubber, and space-age thermoplastics are all found in a single ski. New, revolutionary materials are developed all the time, while new uses are found for other materials that are older but not normally used to make skis. One example of an innovative material is Dyneema. This synthetic fiber is sixty percent stronger in relation to its weight than carbon fibers and up to fifteen times stronger than steel. It is also exceptionally light, and, in contrast to other materials, it does not become brittle when exposed to low temperatures. One material that is primordi-

ally basic, but unusual in ski production, is stone. Gneiss, a type of granite, is wrapped in a special carbon laminate and then bent into shape. Downhill runs on skis made with solid rock thus gain an added nuance—highly valued by professionals and recreational sportspeople worldwide. It’s no wonder that zai has its origins and home in Switzerland, where the manufacturer owes its success, not just to the mountains and the long tradition of winter sports, but also to the expert craftsmanship that is deeply rooted there. The company was founded by the successful ski designer Simon Jacomet in 2003, and since then it has pursued with passion the goal of designing and producing skis of outstanding quality.

The word “zai” comes from Romansch and means “tough.” This toughness is reflected in the ski’s resistance to wear. The unusual combination of materials creates a robustness that speaks for itself.

Sascha Moeri, CEO Carl F. Bucherer, and Benedikt Germanier, CEO zai.

Specialists work with extreme care to bring these marvels into being. Ever in pursuit of the inspiration needed for innovation, the master craftsmen of zai are quick to entertain new ideas that can be applied to production, design, and materials. These innovations also call for unique machines and tools, along with exceptional people who possess the skills needed to produce the skis. The production specialists usually come from families that have been intimately involved with the craft for generations. This knowledge, combined with the most advanced ski production technologies in the world, form the foundation of zai employees’ work. If you observe the specialists at work on any given day, it seems as though they are intent on endowing the skis with a soul of their own.

It should come as no surprise to anyone, then, that time, money, and expense are not a consideration in the production process. Zai is setting standards in design as well. In accordance with the puristic principle that “form follows function,” design is reduced to the essential. It involves minimalism in the service of maximum performance. The ski experiences minimal performance loss even under extreme stress. Regardless of the speed, the ski always delivers smooth and stable performance. It is not just to the production of skis that zai applies such high standards and principles. Since 2012 the company has also begun producing golf equipment as well. Here, too, the specialists dispense with

superfluous details and concentrate on the essential aspects. It is a philosophy that delivers on what it promises. This is why all of zai’s products are true masterpieces that bring new intensity to the way the sport is experienced and give the sportsperson a sense of the passion that goes into these products. Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer, holds the brand in high esteem. “Independence, innovation, and Swiss craftsmanship—zai and Carl F. Bucherer share these values. Therefore we are two partners who share the same ideas and values. Even as we each tirelessly pursue our own paths, with our new cooperation we are now moving together in the same direction.”

Personal style plays an important role, especially among professional sportspeople who are always in the public spotlight. Wendy Holdener is also aware of how much changes when you live in the limelight. This exuberant skier is in the early stages of a successful career—a career that promises many challenges, peaks, and adventures to come. Despite her success, she has always held to her convictions and values, “for it is only with honesty and genuine joy that success can be made to last.” Wendy Holdener does not regard the sport as simply a profession. It is also her passion. The principles by which she lives call for bringing out the best in herself, never giving up and, most importantly, never losing her passion for her profession. “Success is nice, but it doesn’t come close to being everything,” she asserts. “The things

Wendy Holdener exudes a vigor that captivates. Her authenticity inspires colleagues and fans. The spirited skier has no difficulty maintaining her self-assurance in the public arena either. She has already found her own style: sporty, elegant, and always open to inspiration from anywhere in the world. Wendy Holdener loves to travel to different countries and discover their distinctive highlights. She reflects on the legendary ski trends of the last several decades with a trace of irony. “Norwegian sweaters of course have great vintage charm, but I doubt they would suit me,” she remarks with a smile in her voice. Instead, she enjoys dressing elegantly when it befits the occasion. This creates an interesting contrast to the sporty ski racer in a helmet and ski suit. Wendy Holdener plays with her various roles, does not allow herself to be pigeonholed, and goes her own way. She never forgets her roots. “Of course, skiing itself motivates me. When I am standing on my skis, I forget everything around me, but knowing that my family is always behind me is my greatest source of motivation.” With the additional support of her staff of trainers, who urge her on step-by-step, Wendy is pursuing ambitious goals. She wants to continually improve, to dedicate herself entirely to the sport of skiing, and to live her vision. Skiing talent Wendy Holdener is conquering slopes all over the globe with self-awareness, strength of will, and optimism—and she is looking forward to a successful future.

FRIEND OF THE BRAND

FRANCO CAVEGN— CHANGE AND PASSION Steep slopes, soft snow, dynamic downhill runs. Skiing is a sport that brings a thrill of excitement to young and old alike. It has had the appeal of something special from time immemorial. The 60’s were an unforgettable era when, as it was said in Switzerland, “Everyone skis!”

“The fascination with winter sports is truly shared by the entire population of Switzerland—we’re absolutely crazy about sport. Switzerland offers excellent infrastructure for guests from all around the world.” Skiing is in fact gaining in importance internationally, says Cavegn. “One phenomenon that clearly demonstrates its growing popularity is, for example, the indoor ski venues in the Arab Emirates or China,” he explains. “I think it is great that people are using these facilities to learn to ski. Later, when they visit Switzerland, they will enjoy the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains and the indescribable feeling of a downhill run in a natural setting.”

In the decades that followed, long lines continued to form for the ski lifts and swarms of winter sports enthusiasts glided down the white slopes into the valleys. The enthusiasm could be felt everywhere—but does this excitement still remain? How much has the nature of the sport changed? Does this fascination with skiing still exist? Former ski racer Franco Cavegn provided some answers in an interview with INSIGHT by Carl F. Bucherer. Thanks to his unbridled determination, he is now able to look back on sixteen successful years as a top-ranking sportsman. Passion and strength of purpose took him to the most important competitions in international skiing, including three Olympic Games and seven alpine skiing world championships. The fast-moving sport has lost none of its fascination for Cavegn. “What makes skiing so special is the competition. Not just between two parties, but also with oneself.” This ambition to continually outdo himself enabled him to place among the ten best skiers in thirty-five world cup races, in which top athletes from all over the world competed. “In contrast to other types of sports, in skiing, you have no one to rely on but yourself. There is no team to offer cover. The only thing that counts is your own performance,” says Cavegn in describing what makes skiing unique for him. “A lot has changed, of course,” confirms the former professional sportsman. “Both the industry and piste preparation have changed and steadily improved.” While mogul slopes and untrammeled wilderness were the order of the day less than half a century ago, nowadays modern ski run vehicles turn the slopes into perfectly smooth surfaces. Even the way skiers are trained has changed, as Cavegn reports from his own experience.

In every word Franco Cavegn says, one senses genuine passion for a sport that combines the beauty of motion with the energy of an adrenaline high. If the conversation has revealed anything, it is that the mystique of skiing as a sport lives on. But one thing is more important than ever: never giving up. “An indispensable condition for success, whether in skiing or any other context, is never abandoning the fight. Those who don’t fight don’t have a chance.” Cavegn has experienced many emotional moments in the course of his career, both successes and setbacks. Nonetheless, he never lost sight of his goals, even in the most difficult situations. “I find that it is important to keep looking ahead to the future,” he says as he describes the philosophy that made him a successful top-level sportsman. He continues to live by this philosophy today as the managing director of his own events agency. As a Swiss native who grew up with skiing, Cavegn is well aware of the great importance of the alpine sport for his homeland.

Q&A What are you fascinated by? The feeling of approaching my own limits and overcoming them. Why did you pick skiing as a sport? I grew up in a small village in Switzerland where I really had no other choice (laughs). What is your motto? Cool running. And still giving your best every day.

As a crossroads for different languages and cultures, Switzerland has succeeded in securing a stable position in the global watch market. The often considerable cultural differences in the world’s various regions make broad product diversification necessary. This diversity is on display in the new “Pathos” collection by Carl F. Bucherer, for instance. Some models are discreet, while others are studded with numerous diamonds. The Lucerne-based watch manufacturer has designed two of its collections to appeal exclusively to women. Nevertheless, more and more women are choosing classic men’s

models—which undoubtedly also make a compelling impression on feminine wrists and whose more masculine design does not in the least detract from the femininity of the women buying them. So do classic men’s watches exist at all anymore? The answer to this question probably depends on personal taste, existing gender roles, and the culture in which one is living.
