The kids will love the projects just waiting for them at the very popular Lowe’s Kids Construction Zone and the Trinity Inflatables jumping castle! 2016 Home Show Committee The planning and execution of an event of this size requires a number of volunteers contributing time, effort, energy, and ideas! The individuals listed below have put in a tremendous amount of effort and deserve to be recognized! Without their support and involvement, this event simply would not be possible. During the weekend of the Show, there will be close to 100 people volunteering their time greeting attendees, assisting vendors, assisting in setting up the show and tear-down, too. We sincerely thank each of our valued volunteers for contributing their time and talent to help produce a great event for our community!

Complete Design, Inc. Often times, when our client is considering building a custom home, they study different aspects of homes being built in the area and dream about how the most appealing parts can be incorporated into their new home. Complete Design has been assisting clients with putting these ideas into the form of buildable plans since the year 2000. In the NCW area this has resulted in over 2500 new residences. Ultimately it is our goal to have a final product that the client and their contractor can be proud of. Complete Design’s knowledge of the local building industry and the requirements of the governing jurisdictions are fundamental to this success. By providing services from early design concept through final permitting, Ryan Kelso, our founder and CEO, puts much emphasis on designing structures that “work” from the contractor’s point of view, but are creative from the client’s. It is this, combined with our reasonable rates, that make us distinctive. Our use of three-dimensional design technology helps customize the home to meet the client’s desires, and in turn, present it to them in a very visual way. This allows for modifications when the project is still in the design phase, avoiding costly revisions once construction begins. Complete Design can be counted on to create a home that feels comfortably familiar from the day the client moves in, because it is exactly how they dreamed it would be.

Outstanding communication and providing as much pertinent information as possible are just two of the ways in which Complete Design strives to eliminate some of the bumps that inevitably come with building a home. You are encouraged to visit our website at www. completedesign.cc, it is designed to answer many of the questions homebuilders have and is a wonderful resource for anyone just getting started with a project. In depth information that is a must to know is available in the free resource section. As well ,visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/#!/CompleteDesignInc to enjoy viewing many of our home renderings’. Contact us at 509-662-3699. Dear Lexar, Our experience working with Lexar Homes was exceptional. The process from picking out blueprints, to choosing options and putting the entire package together was pleasurable. The individuals working for Lexar in the office and on the work site were professional, courteous, helpful and above all, honest. By honest, I mean that they did not gloss over the facts, they under promised and over performed. We built expecting this to be our last home we would live in. We chose several upgrades, enhancing our home. We were able to modify the plans “2130” to our liking without resistance from Lexar. Everyone was easy to work with, they stayed on schedule and we were able to move into our home on time. We often refer others to Lexar. Building a Lexar home was a very pleasant experience, and now having been in our home for almost a year and a half, our opinion has only gotten better.

Dave Shoults Agency

The Dave Shoults Agency was created 4 years ago this February with zero members. Many weeks were spent planning on how to make the agency different from all of the other insurance agencies in the Valley. In an industry that is so price driven with everyone saying they will save you money if you switch, The Dave Shoults Agency decided to focus on one member at a time. Consultative selling and relationship building was the direction the agency took. Treat every potential new member as if they were family. Give them the service they deserve, explain the coverages and help the members make sound choices for their policies. With this philosophy, The Dave Shoults agency has grown tremendously, solely on word of mouth. You can find The Dave Shoults Agency in the Go USA building in Wenatchee, Town Toyota dealership in East Wenatchee, Spokane, Kennewick, Yakima and Seattle. The team consists of 12 licensed agents and an office management team that offers complete support to all of our members. The Dave Shoults Agency offers Auto, Home, Commercial, Life, Financial Services products in 9 States. Call or email anytime for a consultative and service oriented approach to your insurance needs.

Hidden Construction Hazards Submitted by: Jeff Story, Story Construction LLC

Have you ever wanted to tackle your own construction project? Many of you may already have, or you are thinking about starting one, but you may not be aware of the many hazards that are present on construction sites. In this article, we will discuss several of the health hazards that are present in construction projects today that are not seen or known, such as asbestos, lead and mold. Asbestos was and is used in many construction materials such as insulation, roofing, drywall materials and adhesives. It is known to cause serious health problems that don’t show up until years later. Because asbestos can stay airborne for up to 96 hours after it has been disturbed, it takes special training and equipment to ensure proper and safe removal of asbestos containing materials. The only way to know if the materials you plan on disturbing contain asbestos is to have it tested by a certified analysis lab. Lead is a relatively new hazard even though it has been around and used for years. Many people don’t know about lead and its effects on people, especially pregnant women and children. The EPA has set new laws for contractors and landlords who work on structures built before 1978. It takes special training and equipment to safely alter surfaces that contain lead based paint. Even though they sell test kits at local hardware stores, you have to be trained to know what kits to use, and on what surfaces to use them on because not every kit is compatible with all types of surfaces.

Eastern Washington has a fairly dry climate compared to the west coast, yet we still have our fair share of mold problems. Mold can begin growing within 24 hours under the right conditions. Mold is commonly found anywhere dampness might be such as crawlspaces, attics, kitchens and baths. There are many different types of mold, some which are not actually bad for us, but the only way to know what type you have is to have it tested by a certified lab. One of the biggest misconceptions about mold is that it can be cleaned and remediated using bleach. Bleach will clean a surface, but it will not kill mold spores. It takes special chemicals (which are not available to the general public), equipment and training to effectively remediate mold. Some of the most obvious hazards on a jobsite actually come from the tools used to complete the job. Examples of these hazards are nail guns, saws, drills and jack hammers. These tools are loud, which can cause hearing loss if exposed for long periods of time. They can also create dust, which, if inhaled can harm your respiratory system. Using the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will help to reduce hazards to you. This article was intended to help and inform you about possible hazards on Do It Yourself projects. The more informed and educated you are about possible hazards, the easier it is to keep yourself, your family and others safe during your project.

A Few Frequently Asked Questions Submitted by: Ryan Kelso, Complete Design, Inc.

Is It Advisable to Buy an Existing House or to Have a Custom One Built? Building your own house offers many advantages. It gives you the flexibility to plan an efficient and beautiful home as per your requirements. Building your own home can also be very rewarding. You may save more money in building your home. In fact homebuilding is a great learning experience. After locating a piece of land on which you would like to build, contact a local design professional who is experienced with design and construction issues in your area and can also provide initial site evaluation services. It is important that you should keep your design simple and efficient. Your construction costs can vary significantly depending on many factors, which may include your region, the site, the design, local construction activity, as well as other factors. You can check with local home listings to determine what the cost per size and amenities provided would be for your area. What Is a Guide to Use for Establishing a Home that I Can Afford? The monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 33% of monthly household income for most families. WESTERB984CF

How Do You Determine Cost Per Square Foot? Cost per square foot is typically calculated by dividing the total cost by the square feet of living area. Costs such as impact fees, water meter fees, sewer hookups, septic systems, wells, temporary utilities, plumbing, garage doors, cabinets, appliances, site concrete work such as driveways and sidewalks, and landscaping are included in the total cost and affect the cost per square foot calculation. But they are unrelated to the square feet of living area in the home. Consequently, smaller homes generally cost more per square foot than larger homes because there is less finished square footage to divide these costs into. What Frequently Adds Costs to Construction? Change orders and building delays. Where Do I Start? Contact a designer to set up an appointment to discuss your needs and wants. It works great if time can be spent together at the site to discuss orientation, views, approaches and exposure to weather. From here you and your designer can set the base for direction, scope and timeline of the project. The Custom Home Design Process Submitted by: Ryan Kelso, Complete Design, Inc.

Phase I - Schematic Design Phase I involves determining the project goals and requirements, which in turn define the program for the project. This “program” states the required functions of the project. It explores questions related to budget, time frame, square footages, indoor and outdoor space usage, spatial relationships and form. This is also the research phase of the project, when geotechnical, zoning, applicable building codes, etc. are discovered and addressed. The design team, based on the client’s needs and wants will be assembled. This phase produces a final schematic design, to which the owner signs-off on after discussions with the designer. Phase I will result in floor plan design. Phase II - Design Development Using the floor plans created in Phase I, this phase takes the process one-step further by generating elevations & roof features. The result is drawings that define the “style” of the building and specify design elements such as material types. A Site Plan is also created during this phase.

functionality of the structure, construction documents are created. These drawings have greater detail and will include structural components and construction framing. Phase IV - Construction Documentation Phase This phase takes the drawings created in phase III and compiles them, along with specifications and details, into a set that will be used for submittal to building officials for approval, as well as to the builder for construction purposes. Phase V - Document Submittal Phase This final phase is one in which all the construction documents, along with all the backup information from the design team, is made part of the building permit application. Phase V also includes submitting this package to the applicable building department jurisdiction.

Phase III - Construction Drawings Phase Once the client and designer are satisfied with the aesthetics and

Before Hiring a Contractor, Recognize the Warning Signs of a Scam • Contractor provides a credential or reference that can’t be verified. • Contractor offers a special price only if you sign today, or use other high-pressure sales techniques. • Contractor only accepts cash, require large deposits or the entire costs up front, or asks you to make the payment in their name. • Contractor does not provide a written contract or complete bid. • Contractor asks you to get the building permit. In most instances, if you have hired a contractor, the contractor is required to take out the permits. Permits are your protection and help ensure that work will meet local building codes. • Contractor offers exceptionally long warrantees. • Contractor wants to do most or all the work on weekends and after hours. • Contractor gives you an offer that sounds “too good to be true.”

We frequently receive inquiries from homeowners who have run into problems with their contractors. More often than not, these homeowners have hired an unregistered, uninsured ‘contractor’ who isn’t properly bonded, and the homeowner finds themselves in impossible situations as a result of the temptation to choose a contractor based solely on price rather than completing their due diligence—much less recognizing the warning signs.

As referenced above, an offer that sounds “too good to be true” is more than likely your warning sign that you’re dealing with an illegitimate contractor, and to steer well clear! If you select an unregistered contractor for your construction or home-improvement project, you risk having absolutely NO recourse if things go bad. For those who have ever found themselves in this predicament, know what a very, very painful and costly experience this can prove to be. In addition to heeding the warning signs above, remember to: • Utilize the BNCW website as a resource for completing your due-diligence • Ask contractors for references • Ask what inconveniences might arise • Obtain a written contract • Make sure you understand the terms before you sign anything • Be cautious about paying for work not yet completed • Put all change orders in writing • Avoid making final payment until you have received a lien release from suppliers and subcontractors For more information, please visit www.buildingncw.org.

Key Details to Look For in Your New Home Submitted by: Rob Eldred & Shawn Larson, Lexar Homes

Not every home is created equal! A home includes literally hundreds of individual systems and parts that all come together to create the single largest investment you’re likely to make in your lifetime. As you look to purchase or build your new home, the following are just a few important considerations that you will want to include in your decision making process. SUPERIOR ROOF ASSEMBLY Look for superior roofing shingles with an extended material and labor warranty. Your roof is not where you want to skimp. It’s the umbrella for every other part of your home so having the added protection that Lexar provides is an immeasurable value. Look for an engineered attic ventilation system. Such an attic ventilation system has been engineered by ventilation specialists to ensure a proper airflow balance, protecting your home from potential moisture causing issues. An improper balance of air intake and exhaust can lead to very damaging results. Framing Benefits Look for Advanced Framing Techniques. Reducing the amount of wood used in your home increases the amount of insulation in your walls, lowering your heating costs, saving you valuable dollars. Glulam

headers, insulated corners, ladder framing intersecting walls, and balloon framing interior walls all add superior insulating value to your home. HIGH EFFICIENT LIGHTING Look for 100% Energy efficient CFL lighting (LED’s in dimmable locations). CFL bulbs use 1/5th the power of incandescent and have similar lighting to the incandescent you were used to. LED’s are again 50% more efficient but last 6x’s longer yet. EFFICIENT HEATING/AC SYSTEMS Look for high-efficient heating systems. Electric furnaces with heat pumps, gas furnaces or innovative and more efficient ductless minisplits are all great choices and represent the newest technologies and advancements. SMART HOME AUTOMATION Look for Smart Home Automation. The convenience, safety and comfort of knowing that you won’t be arriving home to a dark house is priceless. Turning on your exterior, entry, and kitchen lights from within your car is no longer a thing of the future. Adding security cameras, entry lock, plus a garage door opener and home security from your smart phone offers you peace of mind.

Considering a Central Vac System?

Submitted by: Karen Weaver, Sew-Creative Sewing & Vacuum

There are several good reasons for considering central vacuum systems in new homes. The most obvious is indoor air quality. Indoor air quality is a huge marketing tool for potential homeowners, especially if they have kids. While traditional vacuums can recirculate dusty air, central vac removes most allergens from the home. Stanley M. Naguwa and M. Eric Gershwin of University of California at Davis School of Medicine conducted a study of 25 people, in which some individuals used a conventional vacuum for three months while others used a central vacuum system. At the end of the three months, they switched. During the six month time period, they measured the participants’ activity, sleep, non-nasal symptoms, practical problems, nasal symptoms, eye symptoms and emotions. For all categories, the central vacuum system was deemed the better choice. Weight is another factor. Instead of lugging around a heavy receptacle that unplugs from the wall every time users go a little too far, central vacuum systems consist of hoses and handles.

Manufacturers have other features that will attract buyers as well. If you’ve been considering investing into a central vacuum system, the findings of this study provide just one more great reason that your investment is a smart one.

5 Things to Avoid When Thinking About Buying a Home Submitted by: April Wiggins & Amanda Pearcy, Branch Managers, Washington Federal If you’ve done any research on the home-buying process, you know it’s just that – a process. And for many potential homebuyers, this process starts before they’re even aware. Unfortunately, sometimes the decisions potential homebuyers make with money, credit and employment can greatly influence when they can buy a home and the type of loan they qualify for. To help make the road to home ownership a little smoother, here are 5 things to avoid when thinking about buying a home. Use cash instead of credit for your purchases. If necessary, postpone major purchases until you have saved enough money to pay for your purchase in full. Most lenders will evaluate your overall debt when determining your ability to take on a major purchase, like a home. So don’t run out and buy a car if you’re trying to also buy a house, since the additional debt will affect your mortgage qualification and your ability to make loans payments. Not staying informed as to your credit balances. Although this is good practice in general, it’s especially important when you’re thinking about buying a home. Uncertainty about how much you

owe is dangerous and you don’t want any surprises to pop up when a potential lender pulls your credit. Avoid skipping bills to make other payments. Although skipping a payment may bring immediate relief, it is only a temporary solution if you have a long-term problem with cash flow and have trouble living within a budget. Changing jobs before applying for a mortgage. Most lenders look for consistency in employment when evaluating your ability to pay back your loan. If you can, avoid a change in jobs right before or while you’re in the midst of applying and being approved for a mortgage. Not seasoning your assets. “Seasoned assets” refers to liquid cash, so usually money in a checking or saving account, which have been available to you for a period of time. Many lenders require a borrower’s reserves to be seasoned for a minimum of 30 - 60 days.

Project Planning: Keeping Your Budget in Line Submitted by: Dane Strausz & Greg Armstrong, ProBuild Once you’ve decided how much you can afford to spend fulfilling your remodeling dreams, the real challenge is making sure you stick to this budget. So, how can you prevent your expenses from spiraling out of control? • Plan on spending only 80 percent of what you can afford. Put the additional 20 percent in reserve to cover changes, unforeseen problems, and miscellaneous charges. • Remember that anything not included in the original contract will cost extra. It’s very easy to start tacking on hundreds and even thousands of dollars in change orders that will break both your budget and your time line. • Stay focused on the task at hand. Stick to the project you have planned rather than deciding that now is the time to overhaul the rest of the house. Is it time for a change? Perhaps it was that moment when you realized avocado green and harvest gold are no longer the “in” colors. Or maybe you had an epiphany one day as you stood in line to use your own bathroom. Whatever the impetus, the thought has crossed your mind: Maybe it’s time to remodel . . . . The reasons for remodeling are as varied as the projects we undertake. Some of these include: • Adding more space. • Upgrading cabinets, counters, appliances and fixtures. • Creating a floor plan that’s customized for your lifestyle. • Improving energy efficiency with new windows, doors, insulation, and climate control systems. • Increasing the resale value of your home. What do you want? Before you head too far down the remodeling path, it’s a good idea to think through your wants and needs and create a prioritized list. • Decide what changes you want to make. • Figure out what you and other family members like and dislike about the house. • Look at magazines and collect pictures of what you like. • Think about traffic patterns, furniture placement, colors, lighting and how you want to use the remodeled space now and in the future. Do it yourself or hire a professional? Do-it-yourself (DIY) projects have skyrocketed in popularity on the heels of Martha Stewart Living, HGTV and other popular homeimprovement programming and publications. And for certain small projects, a DIY project can be rewarding and fun – if you are prepared and have the proper skills.

Before you start knocking down walls and taking out wiring, ask yourself the following questions: • Do you have a clear idea of what you want your project to look like? • Do you have the time to complete this project? • Have you ever undertaken a project like this before? • Do you know everything you will need (materials, tools, etc.) to complete the project? • Do you have all the tools you will need? • Where will you obtain the necessary materials? • Are you familiar with the applicable building codes and permits? • Do you enjoy physical labor? • Do you have the necessary skills for this project? If not, do you have the time and resources to learn these skills? • If you cannot complete the project according to your original schedule, are you (and your family) prepared to handle the resulting inconvenience? • Will you need assistance with this project? If so, who will assist you? Do they have the time and skills required for this project? • Do you understand all the safety issues associated with this project? • Are you familiar with the architecture and structure of your home (i.e., how knocking down one wall will affect the rest of the structure)? • Have you considered the hidden costs associated with doing it yourself – time, tools and the possibility that you may actually decrease the value of your house if the result isn’t up to professional standards? It is easy to look at the cost of hiring a professional remodeler and think only of labor and materials. However, remember that a professional remodeler offers you an important service – years of experience, the right tools, a network of suppliers and subcontractors, and an in-depth understanding of legal regulations, cost estimating, scheduling and the latest construction techniques.

4K? Is It Worth It?

Submitted by: David Arseneault, Arseneault Automation With the new introduction of 4K ultra high definition TV’s taking over the market place, most people wonder if it’s worth buying into the technology. 4K or ultra high definition (UHD) is a fairly new term that was introduced in August of 2012 by the Consumer Electronics Association. Ultra High Definition describes the amount of pixels within a picture. UHD is described as having at least 3,840x2,160 pixels, which is about 8 million more than 1080p. A HD image is made up of 1080 rows high and 1920 columns wide whereas a UHD image doubles both those numbers and has about four times higher resolution. For example, if you take four 60” HD TV’s (for a combined size of 240 inches) it will contain the same amount of pixels found in a single 60 inch 4K TV.

Just like every new format release (720p, 1080P, and even 3D) the hardware is introduced before the content. At this time, 4K content is growing on a daily basis, but can still be hard to find exactly what you want. Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, PlayStation store, Ultraflix along with cable companies such as Direct TV and Xfinity all offer 4K content solutions. The list is constantly ons growing. custom homEs

4K is not going anywhere and the shift from 1080p to 4K is inevitable. In tilE fact, there has been word that 2016 is the year for 4K content. Up until NCW now, Homecontent Tour has been slowly trickling out, but in 2016 manufacturers

will open the floodgates and consumers will see a large increase in content. The times have changed and people no longer call the TV repair man to come over and fix a broken TV. The majority of the public update their TV’s every 3 to 8 years. We live in a world where it’s not only cheaper to buy a new TV, but somewhat impossible to repair an old one. Just like the evolution of smartphones, computers, and drones, TV’s are getting cheaper and smarter everyday. If you have ever compared a VHS to a DVD, or a DVD to a Blu-ray, you may have noticed a huge difference between the formats. When TV’s jumped from standard definition to high definition, there was a very noticeable improvement. However, the difference between 4K and HD is harder for the human eye to see, especially on a smaller screen. Experts say it’s easier for people to see a difference on screens larger than 55 inches. Whether it’s 4K, 8K, 3D, curved, or smart, you can be sure that manufacturers will not stop releasing the latest and greatest “must have” TV’s. For the time being, 4K is the newest and the content is growing; so hey, why not buy a 4K TV.

Post-Frame Buildings A Great Option

Submitted by: Tanya Davis, Western Ranch Buildings, LLC

Do your home improvement plans include a new shop, outbuilding or maybe you simply want to protect your vehicles, equipment, and RVs? You might want to consider a post-frame building as an economical alternative. Post-frame buildings have a wide variety of uses and styles – from a basic structure with a simple wood frame and metal roof and walls to a complex roof design with various roofing and siding materials and complete interiors. Options for post-frame buildings are endless, and, there are many finish options that allow you to create the look you desire. How is Post-Frame construction different from other types of construction? Post-frame construction requires minimal footing and foundation materials and limited wall and roof framing materials. Post-frame building utilizes a series of treated, durable wood posts, which function as the foundation, structural frame, and wind bracing for the building. Lumber embedded in the soil is pressure treated with preservatives to protect against decay for the life of the building. The metal roof and wall panel act as the structural component and the weather protection for the building eliminating the need for plywood or OSB sheeting. Clear span trusses and simplistic secondary framing coupled with no need for a formed foundation allow for cost savings and efficient construction times. Post frame buildings are a great solution for a wide variety of uses including garages, RV storage, shops, and small commercial buildings. With all of the design and finish options available, your new building will beautify and enhance the value of your property.

6 Tips For Using Your Credit Card This Year Submitted by: Lisa Carnes, CornerStone Lending

More than 60 percent of adults own at least one credit card. If you have a card, you might have been using it a lot lately to purchase gifts, meals, and travel expenses. Credit cards can help you build and maintain good credit, as long as you use your cards responsibly and pay your bills on time each month. That’s why we’re sharing six tips you should keep in mind when using your credit card this year. 1. Pay your bills on time Pay your bills on time, every time. One way to make sure your payments are on time is to set up automatic payments. But, you have to watch your bank balance to make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the automatic payments. Also, if you can afford to pay more than the minimum amount, you can pay off your debt quicker. Keep in mind that people with the best credit scores usually are those who pay off their credit cards in full every month. 2. Don’t get too close to your credit limit Credit scoring models look at how close you are to being “maxed out,” because the formulas predict that people who are using too much of their available credit may have future trouble with repayment. If you use too much of your total credit lines, you can hurt your credit score. Experts advise keeping your use of credit at no more than 30 percent or less of your total credit limit.

3. Get your free credit report every year Visit AnnualCreditReport.com to get a free copy of your credit report from each of the nationwide credit reporting companies. You can receive a free credit report from each reporting company once every 12 months. By requesting the reports at the same time, you can determine whether any of your files have errors. By requesting the reports separately, you can monitor your credit files more frequently throughout the year. 4. Read your credit report and dispute any errors Identity theft and fraud is on the rise, so it’s important to check your credit report and dispute any errors immediately. If you find something wrong with your credit report, write to both the consumer reporting agency and the creditor that provided the information, if applicable, to tell them what you think is wrong and why. Include copies of any documents that support your position. When a consumer disputes credit report information, the agency and the creditor generally have to investigate the dispute and correct inaccurate information. 5. Avoid paying upfront fees to “repair” your negative credit history There are many places that promise to “repair” or “fix” your credit for an upfront fee but no one can remove negative information, such as late payments, from a credit report if it is accurate. You can only get your credit report fixed if it contains errors and you can do that on your own. 6. Be proactive First, it’s important that you act right away. You do not need to be behind on your payments to ask for help, and many creditors may be willing to help if you’re facing a financial emergency. Here’s what to do: Add up your income and expenses. Look for ways to cut costs. If you can’t find enough to pay your minimum payment, decide how much you can afford to pay. Call your credit card company. Be sure to clearly explain: • Why you can’t pay the minimum. • How much you can afford to pay. • When you could restart your normal payments. Consider credit counseling. If you need more help, credit counseling organizations can teach you more about handling your money. Many credit counseling organizations are non-profit. Before you sign up, ask if you’ll be charged, how much, and what services will be provided. Watch out for for-profit debt relief companies that: • Charge fees before they settle your debts. • Give a guarantee that they can make your debt go away. • Tell you to stop communicating with creditors.

Help Keep Your Pipes From Freezing this Winter Submitted by: Travis Turner, Turner Restoration

Ideally, you should winterize your pipes in the fall, before winter seriously sets in. But if you’ve forgotten and all of a sudden you’re in the middle of a deep freeze, there’s still time to prevent disaster. Here are some easy techniques to save your pipes from bursting: Turn On Your Faucets If the temperatures have dropped into freezing and intend to stay there, turning on your faucets — both indoors and out — can keep water moving through your system and slow down the freezing process. There’s no need to waste gallons of water: Aim for about five drips per minute. Open Cabinet Doors During cold weather, open any cabinet doors covering plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom. This allows the home’s warm air to better circulate, which can help prevent the exposed piping from freezing. While this won’t help much with pipes hidden in walls, ceilings, or under the home, it can keep water moving and limit the dangerous effects of freezing weather. Wrap Your Pipes If your pipes are already on their merry way towards freezing, wrapping them with warm towels might do the trick. You can cover them with the

towels first and then pour boiling water on top, or use already-wet towels — if your hands can stand the heat (use gloves for this). This should help loosen the ice inside and get your system running again. Pull Out Your Hairdryer A hairdryer (or heat gun) can be a godsend when your pipes are freezing. If hot rags aren’t doing the trick, try blowing hot air directly on the pipes. Important note: You don’t want to use a blow torch or anything that produces direct flames, which can damage your pipes and turn a frozen pipe into an even worse disaster. You’re trying to melt the ice — not your pipes. Frozen Pipes? Shut Off the Water Have your pipes already frozen? Turn off the water immediately. (Hopefully you know where the master shut-off is, but if not, now’s the time to find it!) Make sure to close off any external water sources, like garden hose hookups. This will prevent more water from filling the system, adding more ice to the pile, and eventually bursting your pipes — the worst-case scenario. This also will help when the water thaws; the last thing you want after finally fixing your frozen pipes is for water to flood the system — and thus, your home.

Chelan PUD is participating in a regional program to bring CFLs and LEDs at reduced prices to customers at local stores.

Check the temperature of your water heater. Make sure it’s at 120°F, but no higher. You'll save energy and avoid scalding.

Turn off the lights in unoccupied rooms or consider installing timers, photo cells, or occupancy sensors to reduce the amount of time your lights are on.

If you have aging electric baseboard or wall heat, consider supplementing or replacing it with a ductless heat pump. Chelan PUD offers $750 rebates to help with the cost. Heating can account for almost half of the average family's winter energy bill. Make sure your furnace or heat pump receives professional maintenance each year. Consider upgrading to a highefficiency heat pump. Chelan PUD rebates can cover part of the cost. Review additional strategies to reduce your water heating bills. Water heating can account for 14-25 percent of the energy consumed in your home. Survey your lights for opportunities to replace them with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Since 1983

Unplug equipment that drains energy when not in use such as cell phone chargers, desktop printers and TVs. During winter, open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows. Clean or replace filters in your furnace, air conditioner and heat pump. Check once a month. ENERGY STAR labeled products can cut your energy bills by up to 30 percent.
