OUR PURPOSE

For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has been building trust in the marketplace with the purpose of enabling consumers, businesses, and ultimately our communities to thrive. We believe an honest, fair, and equitable marketplace for all benefits and requires the support of both businesses and consumers. There are many ways BBB works to foster marketplace trust, which enables people to connect with businesses, brands, and charities they can trust in their communities.

As a nonprofit organization with community-based offices across North America, BBB sees trust as a function of two primary factors — integrity and performance. Integrity includes respect, ethics, intent, and working toward a diverse, inclusive, and equitable marketplace. Performance speaks to a business’s track record of delivering results in accordance with BBB standards and/ or addressing customer concerns in a timely, satisfactory manner.

BBB.ORG continues to be a useful resource to assist consumers to research businesses in our community. Our 2023 Consumer guide is a comprehensive directory of BBB Accredited businesses that are committed to promoting BBB’s “Vision — An ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other”. Consumer education is critical to empowering people to safely and effectively navigate the marketplace. BBB is a reliable source of information and advice to a variety of media outlets and channels. This outreach empowers consumers with the data and information they need to make informed decisions, choose businesses they can trust, and avoid bad marketplace practices or experiences.

More than 100 million unique visitors view BBB Business profiles on BBB.org across North America. Included on most BBB Business Profiles is a letter grade. While other organizations base their ratings solely on consumer reviews, BBB uses a unique algorithm to evaluate businesses, and posts alerts when a company is facing major governmental action, has lost its license to operate, or has been subject to a BBB investigation. This at-a-glance assessment of trustworthiness helps instill consumer confidence. We know that the BBB letter grade impacts a buyer’s decision to engage (or not) with a business. In a recent survey, 87% said they are more likely to do business with a company that has a higher letter grade (A/A+), and 67% are less likely to do business with a company with a low letter grade (D or F).

Part of BBB’s mission as a nonprofit organization is to improve marketplace satisfaction by providing free dispute resolution services. BBB encourages consumers to resolve a dispute directly with a business, but if they have been unsuccessful in their attempts, consumers can file a BBB complaint. BBB acts as a neutral third party to encourage dialogue between the consumer and business until the matter is closed, ideally resulting in a resolution.

A survey of BBB.org/ScamTracker users found that 60.5% visited BBB Scam Tracker to examine, verify, or inquire if a situation they were experiencing was a scam and 22.2% believed the information at BBB Scam Tracker helped them avoid being scammed. BBB Scam Tracker is an online tool that enables consumers and businesses to report scams that are subsequently published on BBB.org/ScamTracker to prevent others from falling prey to similar cons. The easy-to-use tool collects and presents scam data online, showing users the number and types of scams and hoaxes reported in their communities.

BBB Education Foundation continues to support youth programing and scholarships to support the growth of an ethical workforce for tomorrow.

TOP 10 RISKIEST SCAMS IN CANADA

In 2022, Canadian consumers reported 1,297 scam reports to BBB Scam Tracker (3.2% of total reports submitted in both the United States and Canada). The overall median dollar loss reported in 2022 was $300 CAD, a 20% increase from the 2021 median dollar loss ($250 CAD). The percentage of those who reported losing money after being targeted by a scam (susceptibility) increased from 45.1% in 2021 to 46.9% in 2022.

The top three riskiest scams reported in Canada shifted slightly in 2022, with home improvement scams rising to the number one riskiest scam type from fourth riskiest in 2021. Reports of home improvement scams increased in 2022; reported median dollar loss for this scam type rose 187.4% from $661 CAD in 2021 to $1,900 CAD.

Tips for avoiding HOME IMPROVEMENT SCAMS

Say no to cash-only deals, highpressure sales tactics, high upfront payments, handshake deals without a contract, and on-site inspections.

Whenever possible, work with businesses that have proper identification, licensing, and insurance. Confirm that your vendor will get related permits and make sure you know who is responsible for what according to your local laws and that your vendor is ready to comply. Research the company first at BBB.org

Ask for references and check them out. Before hiring anyone to work around your home, get and compare written quotes from multiple contractors or home improvement service providers. Ask for references and when possible, view samples of their work.

Tips for avoiding ONLINE SCAMS

Be extremely cautious when dealing with anyone you’ve met online. Never send money to someone you have not met face-to-face. Be cautious about what you share on social media.

Don’t click on links or open attachments in unsolicited email or text messages. If the person claims to be somebody you know or a well-known organization, contact the person directly or go directly to your account to confirm the details.

Take precautions when making online purchases.

Don’t shop on price alone. Scammers offer hard-to-find products at great prices.

Don’t buy online unless the transaction is secure. Make sure the website has “https” in the URL (the extra “s” is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar. However, even secure websites can be fraudulent.

Avoid making quick purchases while browsing social media. Scammers advertise websites that offer great deals, but either don’t deliver the product at all or deliver counterfeit products.

Do more research on those products you found via online search.

General tips for AVOIDING SCAMS

Don’t believe everything you see or read. Scammers are great at mimicking official seals, fonts, and other details. Just because a website or email looks official does not mean it is. Even Caller ID can be faked.

Use secure, traceable transactions when making payments for goods, services, taxes, and debts. Prepaid/gift cards, for example, cannot be traced.

Never share personally identifiable information with someone who has contacted you unsolicited. If somebody asks you to share your SIN or your driver’s license number, consider it a red flag to proceed with caution.
