Our BBB.org/scamtracker website is quickly becoming a significant online tool. You have the ability to drill down into your neighbourhood through an online map of North America to view and report scamming activities. You can research and learn about how many consumers have been taken advantage of and how not to make the same mistakes. We can all work together and fight against criminal activity that often preys on our most vulnerable. Do your part in our fight against unreputable businesses that need to be exposed for their illegal practices. The last two years have proven difficult for businesses. Many were faced with a significant drop in revenue and a shortage of trained workers. Our tourism sector made up of transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, recreation, entertainment and travel services have been significantly impacted. As restrictions loosen, BBB encourages consumers to support local businesses, which are the cornerstone of our communities. This summer, visit local rural communities that are rich in cultural festivities and spectacular sightseeing opportunities. Many of our citizens struggle to make ends meet. Buying local will go a long way to ensure our economy has the momentum to address rising inflation and help to support those struggling during these times. BBB Education Foundation continues to deliver Ethical Decision-Making Skills. The LIFT Certificate program takes youth on a journey into their mind. It helps them understand why people think the way they do and how to change thought patterns. Beyond helping with decision-making skills, the LIFT program helps learners identify positive character traits and offers students an opportunity to define their personal brand. The time is now to deliver this program. Our youth need to have exposure to ethical decision-making and the importance of their personal brand. In many cases these lessons are currently being learned on the playground and the streets. Ethical dilemmas are not always comfortable to discuss with parents or family. Currently, no learning alternative exists. One powerful observation is how peers have respectful discussions in a learning environment about difficult decisions they’ve made in their life. LIFT places all participants on a level platform as they engage in discussions. Often peer segregation occurs socially. LIFT brings all groups together in an inclusive group working together to learn from each other. Ethics is a lesson worth teaching. BBB Education Foundation’s pro-active and preventative approach may be a defining moment for some young people. By developing more critical thinking skills like ethical decisionmaking, young people and those most vulnerable will be more supported, employable and importantly, better-engaged citizens in the community. We need less tragedy in the news involving our youth. Let’s come together and help them succeed. Visit bbbef.org to donate.

TOP 10 RISKIEST SCAMS IN CANADA The riskiest scam type reported by Canadians in 2021 was cryptocurrency scams, thanks to high susceptibility (69.6%) and a median dollar loss of $1,500 CAD. Advance fee loan scams fell from the riskiest scam in 2020 to the second riskiest in 2021, with a susceptibility of 57.7% and a median dollar loss of $1,000 CAD. The third riskiest scam type reported in Canada was online purchase scams, again making up almost a third of all scams reported by Canadians. Notably, phishing scams rose from the eighth riskiest scam in 2020 to fifth riskiest in 2021. Counterfeit product scams rose from tenth riskiest in 2020 to sixth riskiest in 2021; this is likely related to the rise of online purchase scams since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Don’t shop on price alone. Scammers offer hard-to-find products at great prices. Don’t buy online unless the transaction is secure. Make sure the website has “https” in the URL (the extra s is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar. Even then, the site could be shady. Research the company first at BBB.org. Avoid making quick purchases while browsing social media. Scammers advertise websites that offer great deals, but either don’t deliver the product at all or deliver counterfeit products. Do more research on those products you found via online search.

Be extremely cautious when dealing with anyone you’ve met online.
Don’t be pressured to act immediately.
Whenever possible, work with businesses that have proper identification, licensing, and insurance.

Don’t believe everything you see or read. Scammers are great at mimicking official seals, fonts, and other details. Just because a website or email looks official does not mean it is. Even Caller ID can be faked.
Never share personally identifiable information with someone who has contacted you unsolicited.

Investors are scammed into paying money or trading their own digital assets, known as cryptocurrencies, even though the scammer has no intention of building a company. These scams also involve scenarios in which investors store cryptocurrencies with fraudulent exchanges.
Job applicants are led to believe they are applying for or have just been hired for a promising new job when instead they have given personal information via a fake application or money to scammers for “training” or “equipment.” In another variation, the victim may be “overpaid” with a fake check and asked to wire back the difference.
Door-to-door solicitors offer quick, low-cost repairs and then either take payment without returning, do shoddy work, or “find” issues that dramatically raise the price. These types of schemes often occur after a major storm or natural disaster.
INVESTMENT These scams take many forms, but all prey on the desire to make money without much risk or initial funding. “Investors” are lured with false information and promises of large returns with little or no risk.
