By-Law Article 325.11 (a) The printing, publication, circulation or distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets or other devices; by a Noble suggesting, recommending, opposing or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the Temple is prohibited. (b) For any violation of (a), the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new election.

Potentate’s Message By Woody Brown
H
appy Holidays Nobles and Ladies, Wow, this really has been a very quick year. Lady Terry and I have traveled far and wide representing Khedive Temple this year. It really has been a pleasure. Since our last edition, we have had MASA and SASA Fall Conventions. Although back to back, Khedive took to the task and did very well. Congratulations to all of the Units that received trophies for their hard work. In October, we had our Fall Ceremonial. Nobles and Ladies of Khedive, let’s really show a great welcome to our new Nobles and their Ladies. It really makes a big difference if one feels welcomed. Everything we did this year went very well. I have to start with some very big thanks yous. Noble Joe Ramsey, I can’t thank you enough for all of your hard work. From the Rodeo to the Seafood Fest, then the Family Picnic. You are just the best. Noble Kenny Askew for all of your help with the Rodeo and cooking. If you didn’t have all the knowledge and contacts for the Rodeo, it wouldn’t exist. Noble Kent Daughtry and ALL of his Chefs. You guys have really set the bar very high with the dinners we have had this year. Thanks to you all for your support. Noble Al Kinchen, you did a bang up job leading the Units this year. Your leadership was superb.

reetings Nobles, temperatures are finally falling signaling that Fall is upon us. The leaves are already beginning to turn color on some of the trees here on the Peninsula, and will soon begin to fall. It’s the time of year when the dues notices start rolling in, and the Shriners notice will be among them. Please remember that you need to maintain your dues in both the Blue Lodge AND the Shrine, and for 2017, both are due before the end of this year. I urge everyone to pay your dues on time. Please remember that the 10-day cruise to Alaska will be departing from Vancouver, BC on June 18, 2017. We’ll be aboard the Holland America ship M/S NOORDAM, cruising the inside passage for seven days, then spending two days in Denali National Park and one day in Anchorage. We’ll fly home
from there on June 28th, or you can opt to stay longer if you desire. Our travel agent has advised us that the ship is filling up. If you are planning on joining us, I recommend that you contact our agent, Mike Saylor, at 610-779-8640. Once again, Val and I would be most honored for you to join
us. Flyers are available in the Khedive Office for the cruise, a special offer from the travel agent and on-board drink packages. At the September business meeting, our architect presented the plans for the renovation of the lobby, club room and lobby toilets. By the time that you read this, work should be well along. This is a major project that will add to the appeal of our facility and definitely improve the first impression factor. As always, Val and I look forward to seeing you at the various functions and fundraisers, as well as the upcoming Christmas parties. reetings Nobles, It is hard to believe that the year is almost at an end. We had a very successful MASA and SASA conventions this year and many trophies won by our units. The Temple Business meeting and Fall Ceremonial will be held on October 14-15. As always we still need new candidates for the fall class. The Oyster Bowl will be held on November 26th. reetings Nobles ~ This year has flown by and is quickly coming to an end and it will be time for the Christmas Parades and annual Christmas parties and installations. I would like to thank Ill. Sir Woody for a great year. His leadership, and Lady Terry’s, have been excellent. I hope the Officers of all the Units and Clubs have accomplished all they had planned for the year of 2016. A word for the incoming Captains, Directors and Presidents, as well as the Secretaries and Treasurers, you all have a responsibility as a leader of your Club/ Unit. If you don’t know a requirement or have a question regarding a function or Temple Imperial By-Laws, please call the Recorder’s Office. If we don’t know, I can always call the appropriate person in Tampa and get you an answer. To all Unit/Club leaders, please send the Recorder a copy of all new Officers for 2017 as soon as possible after your elections are held. I will mail or put in mail slots in Unit rooms for each Unit/Club Captain/President a form called “Reports of Shrine Clubs and Temple Units Financial Statements,” better known as 990 forms. Please complete ASAP and mail it back to me with the supporting documentation that is asked for on back of the
form. The requirement is mandatory. This is your input for the year 2016 taxes we have each year for the IRS. Noble, now is the time to start planning for the Imperial Council, MASA, and SASA conventions. Deadline for the Imperial Council is February 1, 2017. That means that 1st night deposit has to be paid by then. However, your room binder fee (non-refundable) has to be paid now to reserve a room ($20.00). The form can be found @ http://khediveshrine.org/2017_ImperialDeposit. pdf. I would like to thank the Nobility for electing me to serve as YOUR Recorder. obles and Ladies, Greetings. This year is going by so fast, I just cannot believe that we are entering the 4th quarter of this year. We had so much accomplished but let us not
forget the remaining important events that’s left in our calendar. Imperial Session went well. Our temple garnered more trophies at MASA and SASA. Congratulations to all our trophy winners. Let’s not forget to thank our Chief Aide Stormy Thorson and Lady Linda and Personal Aide Scott Benton and Lady Amy. And the whole crew of our hospitality room at MASA and SASA. They have worked so hard. The overall presentation, food arrangements and the hospitality were superb. reetings Nobles, What a whirlwind year this has been. I cannot believe we are in the last three months of the year. July was busy with fundraisers, visiting the Clubs and Units and a joint meeting with ACCA at Tidewater Shrine Club. This meeting was filled with great fellowship, good food (especially the oysters) and great hosts. Way to go Tidewater Shrine Club. More visits were made in August. Ladies Night at Williamsburg Shrine Club which was a great evening with wonderful food and fellowship. Next we went over to Cape Charles for their parade. There were a lot of people on the parade route as they
are really glad to see us there. After parade we were treated to a great lunch in the Fire Station. We need to support this parade more. So many were asking where our other units were. The Auto Club show was a big hit again this year and our Seafood Fest was also a great success. We need to make this event a bigger fundraiser. This is only 1 of 2 Temple Fundraisers we have to help pay our bills. In September we attended Fall MASA in Virginia Beach. New officers were installed. ILL. Mark Mettler, President, ILL. Ron Klee, Secretary/ Treasurer and our own ILL. Joe Register, Third Vice President. Our Temple was successful in winning numerous Competition Trophies and 12 Parade Trophies. A big thank you and congratulations to all who helped make our Hospitality Room a big success and lots of good food and fun entertainment. Our trip to Myrtle Beach for SASA was great. We had raining weather on Wednesday but rest of week was great weather. Congratulations to ILL. Stephen G. Tucker, President. The SASA parade stepped off at 1pm on Saturday. This year we were the 3rd Temple in the line up so we finished early. Our Temple did not win as many trophies at SASA. We have two Nobles that hold offices in SASA Association, Noble Paul Pennybacker, Commander ot International Legions of Honor and Noble Mike
HI-NOBLE Warlikowski, officer in SASA Provost Guard. Our Golf Classic held on September 29th at Red Wing Golf Course was a great success. We had no hole in ones this year, but some low scores were acheived. The Classic was a sell out of 37 teams. If we had more carts, we would have had at least 40 teams. Golf was good, food was great and fellowship was outstanding. The committee and I thank all Contributers, Sponsors, Golfers and all others who had anything to do with helping to make this the success it was. Our Kids thank you, I thank you and Khedive Shrine thanks you. We are looking forward to next year. We had our Fall Ceremonial on October 14th and 15th. Then on November 5th we traveled to Urbana for their Parade and Festival. Our Temple Business Meeting is on November 17th at 6:30pm. Then the Units & Clubs Installations of Officers and Christmas Parties will be held. That will bring an end to this year. Nobles, this is the last issue before the end of the year. reetings Nobles, Time has swiftly passed by and here we are in the fourth quarter Hi-Noble. Since our last publication, we have seen MASA and SASA come and go, with some well-deserved trophies being earned both in drill competition and during the parades. I want to thank ALL the Units that participated in both of the aforementioned parades. October 1 we participated in the Suffolk Peanut Festival Parade. We sure enjoyed all the smiling faces and the “thank you” we always receive. A heartfelt thanks to Suffolk Shrine Club for providing lunch and fellowship after the parade. The Fall Ceremonial Parade on October 15, followed by the Uniformed Units Dance that evening, we hope you enjoyed. Wrapping up the official “Temple Function” parades on November 5th - the Oyster Festival Parade in Urbanna, VA. As a reminder, your Unit is welcome to participate in local Christmas Parades, however, a request must be approved by the Illustrious Potentate. Thank you again for your support this year. reetings everyone, I hope your summer has gone well if only a little too fast. I would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Seafood Feast. I do not have the final numbers but hopefully we made a little money for the Temple. Now on to what is happening for the remainder of the year. First up we have what has become an annual event the Oyster Bowl which is on November 26th. Nobles we make quite a bit of money for the Hospital on this event. Tickets available in the Khedive office for $32 or a block of 10 for $250. Noble Terry “Butterbean” Riley and his staff do a great job promoting this event let’s help him out and support his efforts. Next up is the Christmas Tree Lighting and Pot Luck dinner on November 27th (letter inside back page). Throw one of your favorite dishes together come on out and get the holiday season started off right. The Children`s Christmas party with Santa will be held on December 18th from 1-4. Bring your children and or grand children out and enjoy the fun. Sorry I am not sure about a New Years Eve Party but there is a rumor that the Ritualistic Divan may be putting one together. As always check the Temple website for more info on this event or any other events that are coming up. In closing I would like to congratulate Illustrious Woody and his staff on great year and I look forward to see what John and Valerie have up their sleeves. he 67th Oyster Bowl Football Game is 1 month away!!! The Old Dominion Monarchs will be playing host to the Florida International Golden Panthers @ Foreman Field Saturday, November 26th, kick off will be @ 3:30PM. Tailgating begins @ 11:30 AM at the Kauffman Mall between 49th and 48th street next to Hampton Blvd. This year’s VIP Tailgate Gate Party is being headed up once again by Noble Andy Bell and Harry Tew, so come out and see Andy and Harry and their crew as they will entertain you from 11:30 till 3:30. W
hen comparing the number of trips this year versus last year at this time, we have 13 more this year than last year. We had 4 more van trips and 9 more commercial trips. Through the end of September, we have driven over 58,500 miles. We are having a good year. During this year, we have added seven new patients. During the Swashbuckers Pig Pickin, Keith Williams heard a couple talking about having to get a mortgage on their house to pay for their child’s operation for club feet. He called Nancy to ensure that Shriners Hospitals covered that condition. Nancy, along with a patient’s parents, described to them what we do. When Nancy left them, they were crying with relief and were going to call Greenville for an appointment. Nobles, keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities for new patients. Well done Keith! When donating to a specific Shriners Hospital, make sure that you designate your donation for a designated project at that hospital. A list of available project at Greenville has been emailed to all clubs and units. If you are donating to Philadelphia, designate your donation for

the “Navigation System.” This is a portable, low-dose CT Scan system that can be adapted for use in the existing E. R. environment. If you are donating to Cincinnati, designate your donation for the “Inpatient Rehab Unit.” Currently, when the patient reaches the Rehab point, they are released to continue that phase closer to home. Despite Cincinnati efforts teaching local professionals what rehab exercises are required, the patients and their families are not responding well to the change from Cincinnati to a local location. They prefer to work with the personnel at Cincinnati. As I have mentioned before, the big fundraisers for Transportation come at the end of the year so it is a guessing game how we are doing. Currently it looks like we will break even this year or be close to it. Once again, my thanks for your support in helping our efforts to get our kids from home to the hospitals and back. That being said, don’t forget our Temple. A lot of effort needs to be expended to keep the building, not only in good repair, but also looking like a place that the public wants to be at. Isn’t it great to be a “Khedive Shriner!”

ello Nobles and families, Greetings from Greenville. We have had a great year so far. Donations are up, as is Patient Care. I would like to take the time to thank you all for your donations and support. A special thanks to all the drivers for getting the patients to their appointments on time, and safely. I would like to let you know that three of our out patient clinics are up and running, Bluffton SC, Hendersonville NC and Johnson City TN. Anderson SC will be opening soon. Spartanburg SC is scheduled to open the first quarter of 2017. We are developing a patient education video for new patients and families to watch, in order for them to get an idea of what they can expect with their future treatments. Remember when you were young and nervous or afraid to visit the doctor? I have yet to see a patient who did not want to go to the hospital or return for the next visit. Heck, they don’t even want to leave the hospital when their appointment is over! That is when you know the hospital is doing something right.
My friends, how about trying all of these things together: fun, fellowship, temple patronage and hospital support? These four things are a great recipe for the success of our fraternity. Sometimes we don’t know which of these is most important, but they all are, especially when we can enjoy each others company while keeping the children as our main focus. We can easily get sidetracked and forget our purpose. As Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, let’s think of those less fortunate, and remember to be thankful for everything we have been blessed with. A
s we approach our annual period of thanks, in addition to being grateful for our hospitals and the unmeasurable hope and happiness they provide our children, we ought not forget to all thank Mrs. Hale. Most of us take for granted that Thanksgiving was always a national holiday but it wasn’t. Until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation nationalizing the day, Thanksgiving was celebrated at random, according to the whims of local town or state governments. Probably Lincoln’s proclamation would have passed unnoticed if it hadn’t been for the zealous campaigning of Sarah Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, she pleaded for 15 years for nationalization of the holiday. To promote interest in the day, she publishd a recipe to guide homemakers in
the planning of their Thanksgiving menus. Here is her suggestion and learning of it in 1976, the Weber family has employed it every year since. reetings Nobles from the Khedive Autos. This is a busy time of year for the Autos. We just completed a very successful 25th anniversary car show with over 300 cars entered, 80+ trophies awarded, many outside vendors and our biggest inside craft show ever!! A big THANK YOU to everyone involved. We followed this the following weekend with another very successful Ladies Night with plenty of good food and fellowship. We had 9 cars entered in 5 different classes in the MASA competition with 8 cars wining trophies. We then put 10 cars on the street for the MASA parade. We didn’t win that competition but we sure looked good and had a good time! We also participated in the Temple Hospitality Room with again, more good food and fellowship! Our next parade was the Suffolk Peanut Fest. Again, I say, “If you don’t participate with a Unit or Club, you are just a dues payer and missing out on a lot of fun in Shrinedom.” Our meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month, Social at 6:00 pm and meeting at 7:00 pm. C’mon out and see if maybe we are the unit for you!! We’ll see ya on the street.

ime flies – the 4th Quarter Hi-Noble is coming out already. In a few months, the Khedive Carts will be a year old. We should have a party! The Carts have been busy. We participated in the successful rodeo and had a great time! The Carts ventured to the Eastern Shore to participate in the Cape Charles Parade – it’s small town America at it’s best! We had a delicious BBQ lunch served at the Fire House – great hospitality! We had a good turnout for the MASA Parade with six of us on the street (photos top). We congratulate our own Ill. Sir Joe Register on being elected 3rd Vice-
President of MASA. Myrtle Beach welcomed us with Tropical Depression Julia but we soon sent her packing and had terrific weather for the competition and parade. We are looking forward to the rest of the fall parades and the Fall Ceremonial. If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact any member of the Carts or just come to our regular meeting on the first Monday of each month. Scooter Patrol By Captain Jack Price
H
aving experienced MASA and SASA, we are heading for the final parades. The Scooter Patrol squeaked out another Parade second place for both MASA and SASA. Unfortunately we were disqualified from MASA competition due to equipment malfunctions. We didn’t compete in SASA. Our LUAU (photos top) was very successful this year. We have only 1 parade left after the Suffolk Peanut
Fest parade on 1 October, the Urbanna Oyster parade on 5 November. Since the Urbanna parade is the last parade for 2016 let’s make a good showing for this parade. Those of you who have not participated in the parades this year make a special effort to attend the last parade. Support Your Unit. Don’t forget the upcoming election of officers in January.
Khedive Band By Secretary Kevin Gilbert
W
e had a busy August and September in the Khedive Brass Band. We played a few gigs with the “Notables” band at Big Bands on the Bay this summer in Norfolk as part of their Sunday evening series. We also performed in Cape Charles to an energized crowd who said they couldn’t wait for us to return. We were busy as well with the Brass Band having performed in the MASA and SASA parades. We placed 2nd in both parades under the category of Concert and Brass Bands. Thanks to all our Nobles who participated in the parades and made this happen. I am told it is the first time in as long as anyone in the band can remember placing in the top three at both parades in the same year. We also scored quite well in the band competition held Friday morning for the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Band Association with an average score of 87.3 from the three judges. Some of the band members sat in with the Boumi Dance Band on the boardwalk at MASA on Friday and Saturday entertaining the passers-by with dance classics from Glenn

Miller and other swing band favorites. We also played with the Drum and Bugle Corp at their hospitality suite and on the boardwalk at MASA and with them at the “Barrel” and then later on the patio outside the Sea Mist hotel for SASA. We have a full schedule of events remaining which will keep us practicing and performing throughout the remainder of 2016. If you have played an instrument in the past or just want to be a part of a growing unit, we are always looking for new members. We need a full time driver for the parades and can always use help with equipment and other things. We rehearse at the Shrine Activities Building Tuesday evenings. his has been another uneventful year for the Staff, by not having to build for the Ceremonials, we kept in touch with our members,by the old outdated phone and emails. I want to thank all of our members for their support. We have not had a Traditional Second Section Ceremonial since 2 June 2012. I hope the Staff is not the only unit and Nobles that remembers their trip across the Hot Desert Sands, and over 90 years of Temple History. On 26 November 2016, Khedive Shrine will host the 67TH Annual Oyster Bowl Game. The Old Dominion Monarchs will be playing the Florida International Panthers. This will be Old Dominions 6TH appearance in the Oyster Bowl Game. with 4 victories, going for number 5. GO BIG BLUE. This game is for the benefit of Shriner Hospitals for our Children. On 1 August 2016, our Temple and the Staff lost a friend to all, Noble Robert H. Foxwell Jr.,P.P., he will be missed by all. The Directors Staff would like to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

ummer is quickly coming to a close and soon we will all be complaining about the cold. Enough on that let`s get on with the good stuff. One of our very own members, Bill Manier, makes guitars out of cigar boxes as a hobby. He recently made one for Illustrious Roy Clark, who you may remember from televisions Hee-Haw. Most Worshipful Wayne Flora attended the Grand Ole Opera recently and presented it to Roy back stage. How cool is that? But wait that is not all. Right Worshipful Al Cutchin had the honor of presenting Raymond (Rainbow) Wimbrough his 70 year Veterans Plaque at Seaboard Lodge recently. From all of us, Rainbow congratulations on reaching this tremendous milestone in your Masonic career. Moving on, we had a good showing of Clowns at the MASA parade with one exception “BoBo” who could not attend due to a personal matter. I am sure Harry missed being there but not as much as the spectators on Atlantic Ave. Next I would personally like to applaud Dave “Gonzo” Davis this year’s Director for doing a great job keeping everyone up on all the Clown happenings. If we are lucky you will be Director next year. We still have a number of parades to attend as well as the Children`s Christmas party in December so don`t put up your make-up yet. Hope to see you around the town. Clown barbeque we have it, you want it, so come get it. Just contact Harry Tew or any Clown member and we will gladly sell you a couple hundred pounds. Beach Bum Brothers By Captain Richard Rawls
N
obles, Hopefully you all can relate to what I am about to say, especially if you have retired from a lifetime of work as many of us have done. You retire and think that you will have all the time in the world to do all those things that you were not able to do when you were working. Or, you take on a “small” job in your Lodge and find out that you are the only person doing the work. Thus is the nature of many of us today. As we retire, we think that we need to stay busy and we fail to learn a key word – NO ! In our daily lives after retirement, we need to be selective in how much we do and to focus our attention on those things that should mean the most to us. These include our family, church, our health and other activities we choose to be a part of. The Beach Bum Brothers Unit, still the only Peninsulabased Unit of Khedive, is made up of wonderful Masons who have ALL retired from the regular work they have done. And like many folks, they have kept themselves very busy with family, Lodge work and many day-trips or vacations. Nothing wrong with any of that and I know they are all enjoying themselves. Nobles, it is very difficult to be everywhere and do everything, but I hope that you all are able to set your priorities and do what is necessary to bring joy to your life. The Beach Bum Brothers continue to work hard to support Khedive and our Lodges and are always looking
for new members. Please take a look around your Lodge and see if there are any members that you feel would benefit from membership in the Shrine. Talk with them, let them know of the great work done by the Shrine, invite them to attend open Shrine functions and do what you can to encourage them to join. And after they join the Shrine, let them know about units like the Beach Bum Brothers Unit who ride those wonderful Segways and spread the good work of Khedive Shriners wherever they go. Nobles, I know this has not been the typical message that you have come to expect, but we need to do all we can to increase our membership in our Lodges and then in the Shrine. As Captain of the Beach Bum Brothers and member of the Membership Committee of Khedive, I strongly encourage you all to make your Lodges stronger and thus make our Shrine stronger. reetings from The Khedive Shrine Golf Club and by the time you get this Hi-Noble we will have completed our 2016 golf season and have started planning for the 2017 golf season. As stated in our last Hi-Noble, our season started out being a very wet one, but the weather started to shine and stay dry for our Tuesday outings. So far this year we have had four Hole-In-Ones’s made. The first one was made by Noble John Styron, on Sept. 13, 2016 on the Par Three hole # 7 at the Sleepy Hole Golf Course, the other three Hole-In-One were made on the same date at the Cypress Creek Golf Course in Smithfield, Va. Tim Schanken and Chuck Brewer made their Hole-In-One on hole # 7 and Richard Decker made his on hole # 13. “Way to Go John, Tim, Chuck and Richard”. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club is now preparing for the Club Championship, which will be decided after playing the selected golf courses, which are Cypress Creek, Bide-A-Wee and Cahoon Plantation. Our last golf outing for the 2016 season will be at the Ocean View Golf Club, Norfolk, Va. on November 15, 2016, at which time we name the Club Champion, give out prizes, and have election of officers and lunch. Also, the Potentate or one of his Divan Officers will install the New Khedive Shrine Golf Club Officers for the year 2017. On behalf of the Khedive Shrine Golf Club Officers and the Potentate, Woody Brown, wants to thank all the 13 golf Courses that allowed us to play their course this year and to the Golf Club Shriners and Guest Members
for another outstanding year. We also want to thank Anne Harriman for her support with the Khedive Shrine Golf Club website that she generated and maintains for the club. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club at this time has 165 members on the roster and we are not adding any additional members, but we are taking prospective membership applications for the 2017 season. This means you will be placed on a waiting list for membership openings. Remember! Shriners will be selected first and then Guest members to fill any opening that become available. Khedive Golf Club will be sending out newsletters to all current Shrine and Guest members in February 2017 for the upcoming season. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club Officers would like to wish all its Shrine and Guest Members Happy Holidays, along with a prosperous and peaceful New Year. A
s the year slowly begins to come to a close on behalf of soon to be Past President Dave McClellan I would like to thank everyone who supported the Club`s many endeavourers in 2016. From working the Oyster Roast to assisting in making the MASA convention a success, you guys and gals are the greatest. Please do not get lost, 2017 President Al Kinchen will need your help to make his year another successful one. Let`s recap a couple of our most recent events. The Club was extremely honored to present Paxton Dunphy a $1,000.00 scholarship check. Paxton is the daughter of proud parents Danny and Amy Dunphy and equally proud grandparents Butch and Leah Casper. We wish you the best of luck to you Paxton throughout your college adventure. The Past President’s Party held at the Aberdeen Barn was well received and enjoyed by all. Past President Wayne Sherman did one whale of a job organizing the MASA hospitality room at the oceanfront this year. All of the Units involved owe Wayne a round of applause.
The Shrine Club Christmas Party and installation of Officers held on December 19th will be on us before we know it. Wayne is running point on that as well so if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to him. s always the Fourth Quarter was a busy time for the Legion of Honor. On July 10th we had our Annual Commanders Picnic at the Rigg’s family farm. Special thanks go to CDR John Jones and Lady Andrea for a great party. The following also attended: PC Don Super and Lady Phyllis, PC Forrest Garland and Lady Harriet, PC/Ill. The catering was provided by Past Master Corinthian Lodge Joe Daigle and son Mike. On August 20th the LOH had a work party for cleaning and painting the trailer. On August 21st the Past Commanders had their annual picnic at the Dockside restaurant in Virginia Beach. On August 28 the LOH
provided the liquor and worked the bar along with the Drum and Bugle Corp’s for the Annual Khedive Seafood Feast. The following LOH Nobles that worked the Seafood Feast were PC R.G. Brown, PC/Ill. Paul Pennybacker, PC Jack Laursen and LN Dave Conner. MASA was in Virginia Beach 7-11 September: The LOH participated in the In-Line Inspection and the team won the First Place Trophy. The team consisted of IALOH Adj. Emeritus Ron Lee, SASA PC/PC Don Super, PC Jack Laursen, PC Forrest Garland, PC R.G. Brown, and LN Herb Hurst. LN Herb Hurst had family in from Pittsburg that attended the In-Line Inspection. The LOH won the Second Place Trophy in the parade competition. SASA was in Myrtle Beach 1418 September: The LOH attended the SASA Legion of Honor Banquet and Installation of Officers. Congratulations go to PC/Ill. Paul Pennybacker who was installed as SASA LOH Commander and SASA LOH Adjutant PC/Ill. Pete Gordon was reinstalled as SASA LOH Adjutant. The LOH participated in the In-Line
Inspection and the team won the First Place Trophy. Lady Guida Marie Whisner, wife of PC Marshall Whisner entered into eternal rest peacefully on August 15, 2016. The family received friends at Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Interment followed at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. PC Milt Midgette says it is time to start signing up for the Khedive High Noble Booster Program. This is his sixth year at running the program. Drum & Bugle Corps By Assistant Director Richard Quintilone
T
he Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps would like to thank Joe Harris for his leadership these past two years. He will assume more responsibilities next year as a “Past Director,” and the new Director will concur as we end another year and marching into 2017. We congratulate every Noble in the Drum & Bugle Corps for doing a super job and the 2nd place trophy at the MASA parade in Virginia Beach. We enjoyed playing at the Best Western Pool and an evening on the Boardwalk. The following weekend at the SASA parade in Myrtle Beach we received the 3rd place trophy despite Richards “Drum Rolling.” We played with emotions, pride, precision and exhaustion. Again: Congratulations on a job well done to all that committed to perform. We thank our High Priest & Prophet: Oscar Obsuna for donating our marching ascot to our parade uniform. Our new look and New Feet on the Street are welcomed. We thank everyone that helped at The TGIOV/Festevents this year. The Cape Charles parade was like a walk on the Beach. We can hardly wait till next year. We are grateful to Frank and Joe for pulling together the annual family picnic which was well attended with great weather. There are not enough accolades written that would express our thanks and appreciation. We look forward to the Urbanna Oyster festival Parade, Fall Ceremonial and Parade, George’s Oyster Roast, Christmas Parade TBD, Oyster Bowl at ODU, and our highly anticipated Country Club Christmas Social. We will be looking for more playing venues to increase our proficiency and get the Shrine word out. Contact Richard if you would like to host the Drum & Bugle Corps. One Past Director noted that “We play for food.” A special thanks for the Corpsmen that went over to Mike McGrath’s house and played for him (photo top). You could see and feel the smile on Mike’s face when he started playing with us. This was the first time he has actually played his Glock since his illness. He said, he really enjoyed us coming and playing, also wanted to thank everyone for doing so. And soon after he laid down his working tools as the Corps played Mike’s favorite song: “Disney’s, Small World.” Please keep our Shrine Children, Parents, Caregivers and Roadrunners in our prayers as they travel to their medical appointments. Let us pray that the greatest healing power on earth is our number one driver. Remember to give thanks to the men and women protecting our country. Please pray to protect those in harm’s way. Freedom is not free.
To our sick and concerned we have often said, “If you need anything, please give me a call.” Please call or better visit an ill or distresses Noble. We have to take care of our Nobles. You can make a member very happy and you will be the person that perpetuates a smile and brotherly love that makes our fraternity strong. May God shed his healing light on our Ladies and Families, and All Good Children say “Amen.” Take a moment to contact a Noble, bring him back to the Temple. Motor Corps By Past Captain Ernie Ayers
W
here has the time gone, summers over and here we are getting ready for the holidays. Since our last communication Motor Corps has participated in the Cape Charles parade and served up some of the best margaritas in town at the Khedive Seafood Feast, always a hit. On August 21 The Motor Corps held its annual outing at Top Golf in Virginia Beach. Can’t recommend this enough, what a great day. The food was outstanding, the staff could not have been more accommodating and except for a few we found out how bad we were at golf, but we all had a great time doing it. Many thanks to Past Capt. George Messenger for putting this event together. Motor Corps participated in both the MASA and SASA parades and competed in the obstacle course at SASA. MASA and SASA are always great events and great fun but
I think this year’s SASA (photos top) was by far the most fun we’ve had in years. Our hospitality room has huge and well stocked, the parade went off without a hitch and the entertainment was outstanding. We would like to thank our Captain Curt and his lady Viki from making this year’s trip to Myrtle Beach the best yet. Before the end of the year Motor Corps will participate in the Neptune Parade, Urbanna Oyster Parade and one our favorites The Smithfield Christmas Parade where we will hold our annual Christmas Party and installation of officers at the Smithfield Station. Well that’s all for now and since this is the last writing of the year all of us with the Motor Corps would like to wish everyone happy and safe holidays.

Hillbillies By Assistant Director Scott Slocum
W
ell, here we are in the 4th quarter and 2016 is winding down to a close. It’s been a good year for our Temple and so too for the Hillbillies. It’s also a good time to reflect on the past and take stock of what we have done and what remains to be completed. As time changes so do people and what they do, in that respect there are some folks that should be recognized by our unit for their invaluable service through the years. Bill Nolan, Ralph and Ethel Ward, David Swoope and Nancy McAfee. These individuals have put much effort into our unit making it a strong and better unit for all. Thank you for your time and commitment to our unit. No, they’re not going anywhere just reducing work load or focusing on new endeavors. As a Unit we experimented with a new fundraiser purposed by our Director Sam McAfee. Our breakfast fundraisers at Applebee’s were an absolute home run and shall be continued into the future. No pun intended but that was a sweet move on Sam’s part. Our family picnic was well supported and enjoyed by all. Plenty to eat, drink and be merry. Then on to a very well supported joint meeting with the Suffolk Shrine club with music provided by our very own Hillbillie musicians. The highlight of our festivities however was at MASA (photos top), where the
Hillbillies won a first place trophy. Then we celebrated the night away at the joint hospitality room, what a night to remember. Next we traveled to SASA for a great time and fellowship. The great news from SASA, we will now become an outhouse for the “Hillbillie Degree.” We will soon be putting on our own degrees, raising money for our hospitals and having fun. Now for something a little more on the somber side. We lost another good friend and brother in the Hillbillie unit, Don Howard. Best way to describe Don, he was a man’s man. Knowing the end was near Don refused to give up. He came to unit meetings and supported the unit in good old Don style. Don was battling cancer and absolutely refused to give up. Even at the very end Don refused to let cancer have even one win. You see, Don chose the time to depart, not cancer. Love you brother! This will be my last article for the Hillbillies as my time is up. I hope you enjoyed reading the articles as much as I enjoyed writing them. he Virginia Beach Shrine Club will soon bring 2016 to a close and will welcome in 2017. There have been many changes in the Club and I am sure more will come as we move forward. I want to take this moment to thank you for allowing me to be your president. Now it’s time for someone else to take the lead. I want to thank my BOD and officers for their support. One man can’t run this club alone - it takes a team. In particular I want to thank Phil Cromarti for his invaluable support this year. Without his support, there would not have been any banner sales. Color Guard By Secretary/Treasurer Pat Garrison

reetings from the “Number One Unit” of the Khedive Shrine! We would like to congratulate Captain Chris Dell for an outstanding year as the leader of the Khedive Color Guard during 2016! Thank you Captain Chris and Lady Amanda for a great job – we really appreciate your dedication and effort. Nobles, as many of you know, our Color Guard is a very small unit. We are in desperate need of new members and would love an opportunity to talk to any noble, whether a new member of the shrine or old, about this great unit. As the “Number One Unit”, we are the first members of the Khedive Shrine on the street representing this great Temple, and we make every effort to carry those flags proudly. We provide our members with their uniform and our dues are currently only $25.00 a year! Any Noble or Masonic Brethren interested in becoming a member of this great unit that would like some additional information please let us know. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM (doors open by 6:30 PM) in our meeting room at the Temple. Active or former military members
Suffolk Shrine Club By President Hunter March
S
uffolk Shrine Club has been busy this quarter. We have continued to work on our property. We have had numerous work days to improve the condition of our building. In July we held our Sudan-HillbillySuffolk Shrine Club Night. Since none of us can count that high, we stopped counting at 100 Nobles. We estimate that over 110 Shriners gather in Suffolk that night for great food and fellowship. The Hillbilly band did an excellent job of entertaining. The food kept coming and the spirits were flowing. Sudan brought a large contingency. Our Friends from the North and West, Acca Temple were also present. Many units and clubs from the Khedive

Temple showed up to support our event. Nobles it was such a pleasure to see our club full of Shriners. I wish all our Temple events had this much participation. Once again that you for coming out to our Sudan-HillbillySuffolk Shrine Club night. In August we held a Blue Crab Feast. We had a great attendance and everyone left with a belly full of crabs. We try to use these events to attract Blue Lodge members to Shrinedom. We also co-sponsored a bar at the Seafood feast. We did this along with Franklin Shrine and the Portsmouth Club. Thanks for all your help. September was a busy month with MASA and SASA. Our members went and supported both of these great events. Congratulations to all the units that participated and won trophies. We supported the Khedive Golf Classic as a hole Sponsor. Several of our member hacked their way around the course. On October 1st, following the
Suffolk Peanut Fest parade, we had lunch and refreshments at the Suffolk Shrine Club. Everyone was invited. Also, we had our “Famous Fish Fry” October 22, 2016. As a reminder in November the Suffolk Shrine Club will be Dark. We look forward to seeing you in December at our Christmas Party. Our party will be on the 21st at 6:00 PM. See you then. hedive Shrine Yacht Club wins Burroughs Trophy! The Mid-Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs held its annual Rendezvous in Crisfield Maryland the weekend of July 14-17. The Rendezvous brings together Shrine Yacht Clubs from nine Shrine Centers. Represented at this year’s rendezvous were clubs from Almas, Boumi, Crescent, Kena, Khedive, Lulu, Kismet,Nur and Zemo Shrine Centers. The rendezvous included lots of great fellowship, games like Bingo And Cornhole, remote control boat races, boat Padres, and boat Decorating activities. There was also a memorial service to recognize Those that “passed
the bar” during the past year. The weekend concluded with a banquet dinner at the Crisfield Heritage Museum on Saturday night. The Mayor of Crisfield joined us for lunch Saturday and addressed our group. He thanked the Shriners for the good work they do helping children. A highlight of the weekend is a friendly competition that recognizes the most active club in attendance. Points are awarded for the various activities and the club with the most points is awarded the Burroughs Trophy which moves from club to club based on the annual winner. Criteria on which points are awarded include such items as boat parade, boat decorations (theme based), remote control boat race, number of Nobles attending, number of boats attending, largest boat, smallest boat, best dressed club, and club with the most Nobles arriving by land.

At the Saturday night banquet, MAASYC Commodore Travis Twiford Announced that the Khedive Shrine Yacht club was the recipient of the Burroughs Trophy for 2016. This is the seventh year in a row that the club has received this recognition.
Williamsburg Shrine Club By Noble Gary Palmer
H
ere’s hoping that everyone has a pleasant fall and winter season. The Williamsburg Shrine Club has had a very busy 2016 so far. Our fundraising efforts have yielded good results for the kids and as we close in on the last quarter of the year our club is planning the second of our semi-annual spaghetti dinners, and our final paper drive. If you’re able to join us for some delicious pasta, salad, and garlic-bread, please come join us at the Capitol Pancake House on October 21 from 5 to 8 PM. It’s located at 100 Capitol Landing Rd. in Williamsburg. If the Mrs. says that you never take her anyplace nice, this is your chance to make it right. All funds raised from our Spaghetti dinners go to the Hospitals. Wednesday December 7 will be our holiday party dinner dance and installation of officers. We’ll again be at the Fords Colony Country Club, and will have DJ
Billy Mitchell with us to provide entertainment. All are welcome, please contact Noble Dick Jones for reservations. Provost Guard By Captain Wesley King
T
he Provost had a relatively quiet third quarter with summer vacations and family activities being primary during July and August. The Provost family picnic in July was a huge success with over 60 family members and Divan present. Music was provided by the up and coming DJ Jenna Dunbar. Thanks Jenna. Grill masters Bill Lauderbach, Jeff Tuell and Jay White provided an abundance of hot dogs, hamburgers and hot sausages. Desserts from watermelons to ice cream sandwiches were plentiful. Clint Post, Gwinn Dunbar, Alan Cannon and many other members kept the drinks and food line well supplied. The Guard superbly handled the duties assigned for the Temple Seafood Feast in August. There were 20 members and 6 spouses working the fish, clams and french fries. A special thank you to the ladies who are always an integral part of Provost activities. Then, along came MASA and SASA. The Guard assisted in manning the MASA Temple Hospitality room along with Chesapeake Shrine Club and other Units. If you did not attend the hospitality rooms you missed a fantastic event from dinners Friday and Saturday nights to the unlimited bar and most importantly the socialization with our friends and Nobles who were visiting. All who manned the hospitality room deserve a huge thank you from all Nobles as the room was a tremendous success. We then participated in the Parade on Saturday with 13 Guardsmen participating and they blew away the competition for 1st place. Great job guys. SASA, in Myrtle Beach SC, a week later brought another parade and competition for the Temple Units. Provost had 12 members present and ready to march with the superior marching ability from MASA, however the Judges failed to see the excellence. As always a top notch hospitality room was established and manned throughout the weekend. Again the ladies kept the tradition of assuring we didn’t mess up on what was served. A special thank
you is extended to Allan Cannon and Gwinn Dunbar for loading, transporting and maintaining supplies including the return transportation to the Temple of all supplies. Thanks guys. Planning continues for the Urbana Parade (November 5) and the upcoming Temple and Unit holiday events. As the year rapidly comes to a close I began reflecting on the year and the many opportunities available to all Nobles. I have heard over the years the statement “what does the Temple provide for me and my dues/ fundraiser efforts?” I will admit I was one of those in the past until I got involved/attended Temple activities. As the old saying goes “you get out what you put in” and this holds true for Shrine. First and foremost we get the opportunity to provide care and opportunity for thousands of young children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to run and play. In addition I have listed (hopefully) the many free activities available to the Nobility: Four dinners at Business Meetings which includes our Ladies, Spring and Fall Ceremonials with hospitality rooms Friday night and a lunch on Saturday, hospitality tent at St Patty Day parade for all, Easter Egg Hunt, meals at the Rodeo, hospitality rooms Thursday, Friday and Saturday at MASA and SASA with plenty of food and beverages, Children’s Christmas Party, Fall Festival (Family Picnic) and Stag Party. The only requirement to enjoy these events is that you pay your dues and attend the function. As we continue to move forward with support of our Temple let’s make an effort to attend the many activities and get to know the Nobility. You may be surprised at the friendships you may develop. (My Lady and I have firsthand experience.) It will only cost you time and can make support of our children that much stronger. Motor Patrol

016 is coming to a close. This has been a busy year for the Khedive Motor Patrol. The Patrol participated in the Cape Charles Parade on the Eastern Shore Aug 6th. It was a nice ride and the hospitality and food afterwards was excellent. Now on to MASA and SASA. All the practices paid off. Rick Patterson’s drone was helpful to critique our rides and it was also fun to watch. Between Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach we won 11 trophies for Khedive Temple (photo top). Our unit and pit crew works hard to put Khedives name out there and it shows. Our next big adventure will be The Imperial Session in Daytona Beach July 2017. We have the opportunity to ride our Harleys on the Daytona International Speedway and have our pictures taken in Victory Lane. We will be competing against some of the top motorcycles in all of Shrinedom. They know we are coming and we look forward to the competition. Our Yeti Tundra 45 cooler and GALA fundraisers went very well and I would like to thank everyone for their support. This is my last Hi-Noble article and I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season which is soon approaching us. On a personal note, I would like to say I have enjoyed being Captain of the Khedive Motor Patrol this year. We had a good year with everyone working together for our goal of being the best we can be. I am so proud of our Motor Patrol family. The Motor Patrol meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month in our unit room at 7pm. We are always looking for new members. Sincerely, Captain Roger Hartman

There are so many to thank I don’t know how to begin, but here I go. I’ll give it a shot. Thanks to all of the Swashbuckler’s families and friends, to our Sponsors, to the other Khedive Units & Clubs that jumped in and helped. (Hillbillies, Desert Patrol, Clowns, Chesapeake Shrine Club). The Chesapeake Sheriffs Dept, the groups that used our Event to have their parties, (NADEP 20TH Reunion, Elevator Contractors Union, The ILA) Thanks to The Jobbies for their outstanding soft drink service. Thanks to our 50/50 seller Kathleen Speak. Thanks to the Khedive Divan for 100% participation!!! I hope I didn’t miss anybody. Oh yeah, The Khedive Swashbucklers!!!!!!!! Great job Pirates and Ladies. The Swashbucklers are growing!!!! Since last quarter we’ve added 5 Pirates to the crew. Tim, Toby, Lester, Larry and Justin, Welcome!!!! Also, a welcome to our Pirates that have been sailing less than a year. Trey, Jo, Welcome Aboard!!! Least not forget our newest Landlubber, High Priest and Prophet Oscar. MASA was a blast!!!!!!!! Swashbucklers knocked down another 1st place Parade Trophy. Way to go Pirates!!!!!! We have our Ship, The Bounty of Hope looking great and our crowd participation is stellar!! Keep it up Men. Anyhow, I’ve babbled on enough. If you want to see how we roll, c’mon out to a meeting. We meet the 3rd Wed. of each Month. We have an hour of fun and fellowship from 6pm-7pm. Peninsula Shrine Club By President Bruce Edwards

obles, greetings from the officers of the Peninsula Shrine Club (PSC). I hope everyone is looking forward to the fall season, cooler weather and the holidays. Football, homecomings, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah all give us many reasons to come together and celebrate. As we celebrate with our friends, family and loved ones please take the time to give thanks to our men and women in uniform and the first responders that serve and protect us. Also, be thankful for the many blessings we enjoy; generous to the needs of others; and mindful of our obligations as Masons. The PSC has moved its meeting location. Please join us the fourth Monday of each month at Joe and Mimma’s Restaurant, 5742 George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17), Grafton, Va. The move provides the Club a large meeting room at no charge to the Club. An extensive menu of Italian food, pizza, sub sandwiches, beer and wine is available. Each member will order from the menu and pay individually for their meal (20% gratuity). There will be no preset meal price at the door. This allows each member to control their meal cost. Hopefully this will encourage more Nobles to attend. Our meetings begin with a social gathering at 6:00pm and meeting at 6:30pm. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. I want to congratulate Noble Stan Atkins for his continued effort in selling Shrine Plaques. The sale of a Shrine Plaque benefits a business by showing they care about the community and their customers. The money from the plaque sale benefits Shriner Hospitals. And we as Shriners benefit by getting our message out to the
public. As you can see it’s a Win, Win, Win for everyone. I encourage all members of the Club to participate in selling Shriner Plaques. Stan, thank you for your commitment to the Shrine and all you do to help me and the PSC. Keep up the good work! Our next Board meeting will be Monday, November 14, 2016, 7pm, at the Newport News Scottish Rite. I encourage all Board members and Club members to attend. One of the discussions on the agenda will be Club Officers for 2017. Installation of new officers will be at our December meeting. If you are interested in being President or Vice President of the PSC please contact me or Secretary Pete Eure. Nobles, this has been a fast moving year for me. It was a difficult decision to leave our long standing meeting place, but financially the Club had to make a change. I want to thank the Board members for supporting the move and their help throughout the year. Secretary Pete Eure, and Treasurer Van Wilson deserve the Club’s thanks for all they do for our Club. Also, Noble Jerry Whitlock has been a worthy Brother to me and the Club. Thank you Jerry for your advice and guidance. We had a very successful Onion Sale this year; Fishing Trip and Paper Drive as well. Annual Potluck Dinner and Tree Lighting Greetings Club Presidents, Unit Captains and Nobles All, Every year all the Units, Clubs, and many individuals help with generous donations of money and toys for the Khedive Shrine Children’s Christmas Party. I personally would like to thank all those who contributed and made the Christmas Party a success last season. It’s that time of the year again and we are in need of your generosity once again. The price of toys has increased especially in the remote and higher tech toys the children play with now. The dues that are collected each year for the Units & Clubs Association do not cover the cost for the food and toys etc. We are asking for donations of $100 to $150 to fund the Khedive Shrine Children’s Christmas Party on December 18, 2016, 1:00 - 4:00 PM. “Please help us make this a happy event.” I would like to personally invite every Noble and his Lady to our Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Tree Lighting at the Shrine Center on November 27, 2016. The dress is casual with Fez. Social begins at 4:00 PM and Dinner at 5:00 PM. We ask that you bring a covered dish and a toy for a child. The Units & Clubs Association will provide beverages, a main dish, and veggie tray. Toys should range from infant to 12 years of age, up to a $30 value, unwrapped and in its original packaging. All toys will be wrapped for Santa before the Christmas party so Santa can give them to the children. Once again all toys need to be in original packaging for health reasons. Please no stuffed animals or used toys. Thank you again in advance for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the Pot Luck dinner.
