llustrious Sirs & Nobles All, The first four months of my tenure as Potentate have flown by at breakneck speed. There aren’t enough hours in the day nor days in a week to get everything done that I’d like to. There have been a few distractions that weren’t planned along the way, not the least of which has been moving and settling into a new home, selling the old one, and the accounting issues that I spoke about at the January business meeting. By the time that you will be reading this, I hope to have all three behind us. I want to say a hearty “Thank You” to the Nobles and the Ladies that helped us plan and hold the Potentate’s Ball at the end of February. I’ve put the event in the “huge success” portion of the mental tally sheet. Our decorating committee did a world class job of dressing up temple and the hospitality room. The Chief Aide’s staff took great pains to make sure that the Ball came off as planned and did an excellent job of staffing and provisioning the hospitality room, as well as coordination transportation for our guests to and from the Hillbillies Breakfast and between the hotel and the temple. The band put on a performance and the caterer fed us a meal that could not have been better. Again, Val’s and my heartfelt thank you to those of you that worked so hard to make it a wonderful world-class event. Our Children’s Easter Egg Hunt also came off without a hitch. The Easter Bunny showed up and hosted the hunt, and left several Easter Eggs outside for the children to find. The Clowns made plenty of

balloon animals and other implements for them. They had a lot of fun playing on the blow-up rides, collecting the eggs, sitting on the Easter Bunny’s lap for pictures, and discovering the treasures that the Easter Bunny had placed in the eggs. After lots of fun and being filled up on sweets, they departed for home with smiles on their faces. Our next big event is or Spring Ceremonial on the 12th and 13th of May, followed a short four weeks later with the Rodeo on the 9th and 10th of June. I hope to see as many of you as possible come out for the open house on the evening of the 12th and for the Ceremonial on the 13th to properly welcome and support our new Nobles. The Rodeo is one of our biggest Temple fundraisers and is an “All Hands” event. It takes a lot of help before, during and after the event to set up for, execute and clean up after the event. I expect each unit and club to assist in putting this event on in some way. Each unit and club will need to have a representative at each of the planning meetings to discuss their part in the Rodeo. Let’s work together to make this a successful event for the benefit of all of us. Lastly, The Imperial Session is coming up in July in Daytona Beach, and MASA and SASA are coming up in September. Please watch for announcements in the near future regarding these important conventions. Again, I ask each of you to please talk to the Worshipful Master of your Lodge and ask him to invite us to come and talk. I’m willing to go myself, we have a Speaker’s Bureau member who was a patient when he was in his youth, and it’s possible to arrange for a Shriner’s patient & parent to attend and speak. reetings Nobles all - It has been a busy time since the January 14th elections and YOUR Divan has hit the ground running. As a reminder, the Khedive Temple Rodeo (June 9-10) is approaching fast, and the Rodeo Committee, working with Nobles Joe Ramsey and Kenny Askew, are again working to make this event a major Temple fundraiser. So Nobles, be a Rodeo Daddy and send your Rodeo tickets back with $30.00, or more. Or you keep the tickets and send the money in to support this Temple fundraiser.

The Khedive Temple’s Seafood Feast will be held on Saturday, August 26th. Mark your calendar. This is an event that you do not want to miss. Nobles, don’t forget your dues. As of this writing, we have 178 Nobles who haven’t paid their dues for 2017. The Temple must pay the per capita and hospital assessment regardless for Nobles who are on the rolls as of January 1st each year. Take a look in your wallet and if you haven‘t paid your dues, please do so. Remember we have to have a Temple before we can support our charity—the Shriner‘s Hospitals for Children. Come on out and support your Temple and enjoy the festivities. If you are a new Noble, or a Noble who doesn‘t belong to a Unit or Club, contact me and let me know and I‘ll introduce you to the Nobility. The Divan will also make you feel at home and you’ll want to come to all the Temple functions. Call me (757-420-4510) and I’ll break the ice for you, plus give you all the details. All Units and Clubs should be gearing up and making plans to attend the Imperial Session (July 8-13), Fall MASA (September 7-9) and Fall SASA (September 14-16). reetings Nobles. The first 4 months have been a whirlwind of activity. The Divan hit the ground running in January and has not stopped. At the official visits, we were received with great hospitality and fellowship. Your HP&P, Bill Hoggard, and I attended spring SASA meeting in Columbia South Carolina and the SASA leadership has some exciting new ideas for the upcoming meetings. Next year spring SASA will be held in New Bern, North Carolina at Sudan. We have begun the Parade season. We had a great turn out for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I hope you will support all the upcoming parades and show Khedive Spirit to all who come out. Our Spring Ceremonial is coming up on May 1213. We need new members. I know that we will come through with petitions to keep our fraternity and temple running for the future. Most of our Units and Clubs have begun with their fundraisers. Support those that you can. I’d like to remind you when you split your money to remember your Temple. We have a Board of Trustees that are working hard on the repairs and upkeep of your Temple. ear Nobles and Ladies. As we approach the second quarter of 2017, your Divan under the leadership of Illustrious John Howe is on track charting the future of our Temple. Rest assured that we are behind him to fulfill his endeavors not only during his tenure but for years to come for the future of our Temple. I am sorry being inactive the past few months. My Lady and I have experienced a situation that’s beyond our control. First I would like to thank my Lady whole heartedly for the love and care she gave me during this difficult period. On behalf of Lady Violy and I, we would like to thank the whole Nobility and the Ladies for the prayers, phone calls, cards and flowers we received during this difficult moment in our lives. We truly appreciate everything.

For the Units and Clubs functions that I have missed, I am truly sorry. During my absence recuperating, it gave me time to re-energize and reassess my dreams and vision for our Temple. I want to visit all Units and Clubs in the coming days to make up for the days that I’ve missed. It is sad to know that Noble John Glauner already left us for the celestial lodge in heaven. I was recuperating and it was too late when I found out. He was a brother chief, a confidant and a true brother . I always enjoyed the short discussions and the short time we’re together. Your Temple needs your participation to make our Temple successful. We need all of you! Nobles, check the calendars for events. Some important ones, Business meeting May 25th, Spring Ceremonial May 12-13. We need candidates, visit your Blue Lodge, talk to a brother and give him a petition. It’s the only place we can get members. We also have several parades, NATO April 29, Holland May 20, Strawberry May 27 and the Ceremonial parade. These parades are a good way for to be visible in our community. We need good participation in all of the parades. Nobles, as the Million Dollar Club Chairman, I want to thank all of you that have given to the endowment in the past and this year. This endowment as you know, supports our Hospitals. Anyone who would like to contribute, can call the office and Anne will take of it for you or Wayne or myself can also do it when we visit. Nobles, we have some work to do, on membership, fundraising and taking care of our building. If we all work together we can make Khedive really great again. y wife continues to be excited about the Oriental Guide position since I am gone at least two nights a week. Visiting units, clubs and Divan meetings make for a pretty full calendar. I recently attended Oriental Guide school in Tampa with 177 members from the 199 Temples throughout Shrine International, it was a good school. I was fortunate to attend with Oscar and my peers from the other 3 Virginia Shrine Centers. We toured Shrine headquarters and saw many things of interest, including the guns John Wayne used in most of his movies. If you are visiting Tampa take the time to visit, and also the hospital. reetings Nobles, Amazing how time seems to fly by. We are entering the Second Quarter and do we have a lot going on?! As you know, we kicked off the Parade Season with the 50th Annual Ocean View Parade. Mother Nature kept trying to put a halt to our Parade but we managed to get through it. I would like to thank all of the Units that came out and supported our First outing of 2017. As we head into the upcoming spring and summer months, our schedule will continue to be busy, not only with Parades but also with various Unit fundraisers. I encourage each Unit and Club to get out and support one another whether it be attending or lending a much-needed hand. After all, we are all in this together. The following is a listing of upcoming Parades for the Quarter and I will continue to keep you abreast of any changes or cancelations, as I am made aware of them. o you need to know what`s happening around Khedive Temple? Then you came to the right place. Where should we start? The Khedive Shrine Rodeo this year will be held on June 9th and 10th. Nobles and Ladies this event is getting bigger and better every year and it never fails to show what we can do when we all work together. As the Rodeo Co-Chairman along with my life partner Kenny Askew I am going out on a limb to thank each and everyone who plans to come out and help. From selling tickets, cooking food to cleaning up the mounds of trash each and every one of you is important. Can you tell I am passionate about this event? Join me it’s a blast. The following week is the Potentate`s cruise which is

setting sail on May 17th. I don`t know for sure but there may be a couple cabins waiting just for you. Jumping ahead a few weeks the Scooter Patrol Luau shows up on July 22nd. Plenty of tickets are still available and believe me those cats know how to have a good time. July 26 is the date of Suffolk Shrine Clubs annual joint meeting with Sudan Temple. Come on out and enjoy the fellowship with our Brothers from south of the border. Next I am going to stretch this out all the way to August. August 19th to be exact which is the date of the Auto`s Car & Craft Show. If you like cars, crafts and good food and fun this is the place for you. Best of all “IT`S FREE”. I just saw 3,500 Shrine ears perk up. The following week is our annual Seafood Feast. Nobles this event is slowly dying on the vine. I need your help reviving it. Come on one more time for old time’s sake. Buy your tickets; sell your tickets just do something with your tickets. Nobles and Ladies, Masonry and the Shrine are not dying they are just sleeping. Injury Care Coming to Greenville Shriners Hospital Philadelphia Hospital Report

he Philadelphia Hospital and all our hospitals take great care in providing surgical procedures considered to be the finest children can receive anywhere. It is also our responsibility to reflect that same sense of excellence as it relates to the appearance and condition of the physical plant in which those services are delivered. With that as a given, the SHC-P will soon undertake a major renovation and make-over of the main entrance lobby and adjacent areas. The space will be designed employing a color scheme and artful adaptations aimed at engaging children, their parents and indeed all visitors with an uplifting atmosphere. First impressions are important and the new look will contribute significantly to that end. Further, the work place environment will also contribute to more efficiency and effectiveness throughout the hospital’st atmosphere. Our hospitals provide extraordinary service. They also are cognizant of the need for an appearance to match.

or decades, Greenville Shriners Hospital has been synonymous with expert care for specialized orthopaedic conditions like scoliosis, cerebral palsy, club foot and hip dysplasia. But injury care? It’s simply not been our focus – until now. We are excited to announce that starting tomorrow, Thursday, March 30, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. we will be receiving our first appointments for injury care. This expansion of services brings us closer to our ultimate goal of transforming in to a leading source of comprehensive pediatric orthopaedic expertise. By offering injury care, we are answering the call from many of our current patients, as well as local referring physicians, for us to expand our capabilities to regularly attend to this sub-specialty. With the recent additions of Drs. Keith Gettys and Lauren Hyer, we now have the manpower to successfully respond to this request. Physician Assistant Erin Howell, who managed an injury clinic in Charlotte, NC for eight years, will bring additional depth of experience and knowledge to our patients. We are setting out on this venture after the successful launches of similar programs within the Shriners Hospitals for Children system. Northern California as well as Spokane have both offered positive reports following the expansion of their services to include injury care. In addition to this being a fantastic opportunity for us to help more kids, the branded slings and boots that our patients will wear during their treatment – complete with our logo – will be another avenue to help make even more people aware that Greenville Shriners Hospital is here in their community and ready to help. As we begin, we will only take appointments referred to us by the child's physician. As time progresses, we will adjust the program to best meet the needs and demands of our patients. We are looking forward to injury care being yet another way we honor our commitment to caring for kids. “This expansion of services brings us closer to our

They found that other Temples do not sit with or converse with the patient families where we do. We call it just good manners or plain ol’ “Southern Hospitality.” We have had in the past and continue to have some of the best drivers around. Last year we submitted an application to the

“Q” Foundation for a grant to purchase a new van. Unfortunately, despite several inquiries, we have not gotten a response. I hope we hear something soon. We currently have over 270,000 miles on our oldest van and it is starting to show it’s age. I’d like to thank all of the Nobility who expressed their regrets over the flooding of my house back last October. Many of you not only expressed regrets but went out of your way to offer your help or helped. It made me feel not only humble but very proud to be a member of this great organization. I am proud to be a “Khedive Shriner!”

Khedive Shrine’s Oldest Unit is now…Khedive Shrine’s Newest Unit!!

s many of you may remember, at our January business meeting, Noble Hugh Spivey announced that after many years the Arab Patrol would be putting away their marching shoes permanently. The thought of seeing the very first unit of Khedive Temple go silently by the wayside, and the loss of so much history with in the temple, was unbearable to many members. Several Nobles stepped up to the plate and joined the Arab Patrol, in an effort to keep the unit active. The current members of the Arab Patrol, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and say THANK YOU, to the remaining members of the original “PATROL” for all of your years of hard work and dedication. We have had quite a bit of interest from the Nobility in what they could do to keep the unit active. After several months of discussions, at our April meeting the membership voted to make a change. Formed in 1909, Khedive’s original marching unit “The Arab Patrol” is on the move! We invite you to come out and join us as we transition from a marching unit to the most super cool, awesome collection of JEEPS to ever hit the roads, woods and beaches in the Tidewater area. We are looking forward to the great possibilities of next generation of the Arab Patrol.

an you believe it’s almost summer – probably will be by the time you read this! The Khedive Carts had a great time at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade – three of us were there. It was wet – we were wet – we were chilly – but we had a fantastic time.! We had planned on participating in the Daffodil Parade, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out! The Carts are looking forward to being in the Norfolk NATO Parade, the Founders Day Parade in Holland, the ever- popular Pungo Strawberry Festival

Parade and the Farmer’s Day Parade in Union, West Virginia. And of course, we will be out in full force for the Spring Ceremonial Parade May 13th. If you’re looking for a fun unit with few requirements, we are the Unit for you! Any golf cart able to be safely driven on the street is the only need – no special color or equipment. i Nobles, Greetings from the Khedive Autos. Our big project now is preparing for our 2017 Car Show on the 19th of August. We are looking for another great show with over 300 cars on the field. The new parade season is in full swing. We usually have 15 cars or more on the street for the St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day parade but this year due to the dampness we only had 4. We started with 5 but due to the weather, we had one (who will remain anonymous) back out and go home early. But, it was success with all the seats full in all our cars. We are looking forward to participating in as many parades as possible throughout the year. We are also planning on handling the parking at the Khedive Rodeo on the 9th and 10th of June. We meet at the Shrine Center on the second Monday of the month. 6:00 pm Social, 7:00 pm meeting and we try to be done by 8:00 pm. If you have an old car, convertible, unique car or are just old and sick of walking in parades, come join us. We can always use new members, riders and workers! Whatever you do, join a unit or club or both. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where the fun is! See ya on the street

he Beach Bum Brothers Unit of Khedive Shrine Center was founded in 2010. It is amazing that we have been together that long. We are a small Unit and enjoy participating as much as possible. In this issue, we would like to mention two of our Associate Members that have been so supportive of our Unit over the years. Neither of them rides a Segway, nor have they expressed a desire to do so. But they like what we are doing and are proud to say that they are part of our Unit. Noble Nicholas Wright Raffaele and Ill. Noble John Howe have continued to be a part of our Unit and we are happy to call them Beach Bum Brothers. We very much appreciate their support. To the new members of Khedive Shrine who have joined in the Spring Ceremonial, we say Welcome. You have joined a great organization who provide tremendous support of the Shrine Hospitals. Caring for the children is the main reason many of us joined and we hope that you have the same feelings. As with every Ceremonial, every Unit and Club will be trying to get you to join their respective groups. We are no different, but would ask that you strongly consider what each group provides and make a choice based on your own personal desires. Every Unit and Club at Khedive does outstanding work and they all would be pleased to have you become a member of their groups. The Beach Bum Brothers Unit continues to support the activities of the Peninsula and Tidewater Shrine Clubs. he Clowns have definitely been busy during the first part of 2017. First off how about the St. Patrick`s Day Parade? The rain held the crowds down somewhat but not the enthusiasm especially with the Clown unit (photo top). We had six no seven no eight, heck I don’t know how many. We had a lot of Clowns there and we had a blast. If you missed it well you missed it. Next up was the Easter celebration at the Temple. The unit always does a go job at this event and is always well received by the children. Worshipful Bill Manier along with several of the guys visited Lake Drummond on the Lodge’s family night. See it never hurts to have a clown around. The Unit is always looking for new members. If you are fun loving guy and would love to see a child’s eyes light up with laughter. Please contact one of our members or better yet stop by one of the monthly meetings. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 in the, where else, Clown room. Last but certainty not least Clown barbeque. You have tried the rest now try the best. And at $6.00 a pound it is a steal. Why not buy a couple pounds or ten and serve it at your next function. reetings from The Khedive Shrine Golf Club and the 2017 golf season started off as a wet season. Our first outing for the season was scheduled to be played at the Ocean View Golf Course in Norfolk on March 14, 2017, but it was a complete wash out due to the rain. Since then the weather god has been good to us and we have gotten in five games with an average of 100 players per outing. Our sixth game for the season is scheduled to be played at the Suffolk Golf Course and we have approximately 30 teams signed up to play, but it appears we might get rained out for the outing on April 25. We have not had any Hole–In-One’s yet, but there have been some real close to the pin shots that have been less than an inch from going into the cup for a Hole-In-One. Here it is the end of April and we are just getting all of our last year members back for the 2017 season; some have been on leave or vacation. We have had several members drop out of the Khedive Shrine Golf Club this year and now we have several opening for new membership. Remember Shriners are to be considered first and then guest for new membership. Each Guest member has to be sponsored by a Shriner of the Khedive Golf Club. Please notify J.W.Wilson or Johnnie Chandler for information on new membership applications. April 18, 2017 at the Red Wing Lakes Golf Course two of the Khedive Shrine Golf Club members, Buddy Walker and Linny Fentress, on behalf of the Law & Disorderly organization, made a $1,000 donation to the Khedive Transportation Fund. ow Khedive Shrine Temple lost its Directors Staff after 92 years, the Staff was formed in 1925. The events play out like a tragic “Two Act Play”, with a move to become “Political Correct” and the need for the Temple to find additional storage space, It played out as follows. ACT ONE - On 20 October 2012 the Temple received a notice from Noble Jack H. Jones, PIP, the Imperial Recorder, with an Order to modify the Second Section of your ceremonial of initiation to comply with all “anti-hazing” laws, nor condone any activity or conduct that may cause a candidate embarrassment, distress or injury. From this date on our Temple has been in full compliance with this order. Our last traditional Second Section Ceremonial was 2 June 2012. The Directors Staff stands by the Potentates decision, to move away from the traditional ceremonials. The non-traditional ceremonials rituals are provided the Ritualistic Divan. Act TWO - On 21 January 2017, at the Units and Clubs meetings, without any notice I was told by the Temple Recorder and the Potentate that the Directors Staff would have to surrender our storage room so the Temple could use it for their record storage, on 25 January 2017, the temple took over the room and started to remove all of its contents. The Directors Staff used this room to store our stunts, building materials for our stunts, a refrigerator and a microwave oven. The Staff can live without the stunts, and building materials, now that we no longer have second section ceremonials. The Staff holds quarterly Pot Luck Dinners, without our refrigerator and microwave we will not be able to continue this practice. Without the duty of a second section ceremonial and the lost of our pot luck dinners, the Directors Staff has been ”RENDERED OBSOLETE,” after 92 years. If the Temple required additional storage, the Divan made the correct decision, but a painful one for the Staff. The

Staff will continue to operate as a Unit and support our Temple and our Shriners Hospitals for Children. THE END OF OUR PLAY. The Directors Staff is a small unit, but it has provided the Temple with three Potentates: Ill Stanley Brinson, 1944, Ill Herman Nowitsky, 1947, and Ill Richard Wright, 1982.I would like to thank the Staff for their years of service to our Temple: Clayton Cartwright, 44 years, James Kiphart, Secretary/Treasurer, 16 years, Herb Myers, 7 years, Watt Perley, Director, 56 years,Donald Respess, Assistant Director, 28 years, Albert Thereault, 34 years, Richard Wright,P.P.,Life Member, 55 years, for a total of 240 years of service to our Temple. A special thanks to Leroy Lane for all of his help to the Staff. On 15 March 2017 I attend my third Century Club Luncheon, hosted by Ill Sir John Howe. This luncheon for the 100 members of Khedive Temple, by length of service. This is a fun time, with the fellowship and stories of the past 50 years, and a great lunch. I sat between two old friends, Century Club member and former Major League Baseball Catcher, Henry “Hank“ Foiles, and a friend of 55 years, a Century Club Member and a life Member of the Directors Staff Richard “Dick“ Wright, P.P., it does not get any better then that. Dick told the group that the Staff is the only Unit or Club with two Life Members and Members of the Century Club. I would like to thank Century Club Member Willie V. Bradshaw for all of his kind words about the Directors Staff. Happy Birthday to two Staff members, Albert A. Thereault, 12 April and Clayton E. Cartwright, 23 April. May God Bless our Temple, our Units, and our Century Club.

he Ocean View St. Patrick’s Day was a success with two dozen strong. The rain cleared and Jack proudly led “The Beat of Khedive.” Our Energy wowed them at the Knights of Columbus Hall. It was a great time for everyone and we got the Shrine message out. The festivities were highlighted by the Nobles celebrating the wearing of the green literally with “Green Beards, Mustaches and Green neck ties”. This was the first parade for our newest Tenor Drummer Ernesto Soriano (Lady Tess). The Drums sounded the entire parade route without fault. Our Annual Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps Paper Crusade is traditionally held on Easter Weekend. This is the second busiest retail weekend, surpassed only by the Christmas retail shopping period. We meet the public to address our philanthropy for the Shiners’ Hospitals and Transportation Fund. With fantastic weather we exceeded our goals. The Drum & Bugle Corps Annual Fish Fry was well-attended event that showcases our cooking talents that include: Frank’s and Charlie’s Beans & Slaw, Clam Chowder, hot dogs, highlighted with Jack’s cooking crew & the Motor Corps’ Fried Fish and Hushpuppies. We were thankful

for the services of the Churchland Jobs Daughters. The Combined Corps members and invited guest, “Jammed together” for outstanding patriotic and family tunes. The Drum & Bugle Corps Ladies put out an amazing desert & craft table. New this year was face painting by Rachel. We were entertained by Eddie’s D.J Tunes and Bruce Barefoot from Footers’ Sports Pub served as the auctioneer. All in All a great day was had by everyone at the Khedive Shrine Center.

Sunday, April 18, 2018 is our next Fish Fry, so mark your calendars. Monday, May 22nd is the annual Drum & Bugle/18 Wheeler Golf tournament. The facilities at The Greenbrier Golf Club provided great refreshments and fellowship. Everyone enjoyed that day. The Holland Parade (May 20) is quickly approaching; this is a short but happy parade. May 21st we will

help Festevents at Town Point Park for the Brew Fest. June 9th & 10th is the Khedive Rodeo, we will be playing the National Anthem with combined Bands. August 20th is our annual picnic. It is with a heavy heart that I report that Lady Nancy I. Curles Quintilone was called home to be with the lord. Her 2 ½ year battle with cancer ended. The loss of our Directors wife placed a toxic strain on his health with recovery in the distant future. I sincerely thank the Khedive & Zulekia family for their prayers and support through her journey. She was proud to be a Lady Shriner. We are all going to miss her purple hair and artistic talents. The Drum & Bugle Corps had the honor of playing a Military tribute to Joseph “Ranny” Ryan at his Celebration of Life Ceremony. He will be truly missed as he retired his Glockenspiel to be with his creator. It seemed that he was present every Monday with his words of wisdom. Our prayers are with Lady Doris and her family. The Drum & Bugle Corps were shocked at the passing of Aquino L. Kenney” Cantal, He played the Tenor drum with great Flare at the Fish Fry. He was Corps Man of the year in 2003. We wish Lady JoAnn and his family our prayers. The Corps had the honor of playing a graveside tribute. Please keep our Shrine children, sick and distressed in your thoughts and prayers. Remember to give thanks to the men and women protecting our country, past and present. Please pray to protect those in harm’s way. May your families be blessed with God’s graces. Apologies to Nobel Terry Putt and Lady Nena for my misnaming “The Matthews County Christmas Parade” last issue. Many thanks for the hospitality and participations in Norfolk’s Ocean View Saint Patrick Day Parade on March 18th (photo top). It was a foreboding Saturday morning filled with wind and rain. Waiting for the start, many of us wore gear or plastic barrel liners, the clouds parted and the rain stopped as we caravanned our way through Ocean View. This was a wonderful parade with plenty of excited young people, parents and old friends. We look forward to the Spring Ceremonial May 13th, The Holland Founders Day Parade May 20th, The Pungo Strawberry Festival Parade May 27th The Portsmouth Memorial Day Parade may 29th and the South Norfolk 4th of July Parade and the Cape Charles Parade August 5th if our tires and horns hold up. ow! Were you at the Chesapeake Shrine Club Oyster Roast? It was a blast. The ”Good Lord” blessed us with great weather; the workers did a great job keeping the food and drinks flowing. No one was arrested. Come on really? Are they ever? Heck what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, and we made money. I want to send a special shout out to the guys and gals at Xenith Bank for their help by selling more tickets than I care to mention. In fact let`s give a big shout out to everyone that sold tickets. We had almost 2,300 come through the gates. Which to tell you the truth is probably all we can stand and still provide the great service we are so proud of. May is Ladies night and President Al has already reserved the American Rover for an “Elizabeth River Sunset Cruise.” The boat fills up quick so grab Al or ”Chowda” Sherman and make your reservations. Our next big undertaking is the Shrine Rodeo which is June 9 and 10. The Shrine Club will once again be setting up on Thursday the 8th and taking down Sunday morning the 10th. Oh did I forget to mention; cooking the food for the concession area on Friday and Saturday. We could really use some help on Sunday morning taking stuff down. I know you`re tired who isn’t. Moving on July is our annual Father/Son/Daughter/ Grandkids/Neighbor’s Kids/Dogs whomever you want to bring. Just please bring someone because just like everything else this event is slowly fading away. Nobles we need to stop the bleeding now not tomorrow. August is slated as Ladies Night and also our annual Crab Feast. So grab your special lady and come on out and pick some crabs. Reaching way out to September 7, 8 and 9 will be MASA at Virginia Beach. The Shrine Club will as always be in the middle of the hospitality room from start to finish. We need a lot of help with this one from set up to take down and everything in between. Again contact “Chowda” Sherman (God I love that guy) to see where you fit in. Rumor has it that once he retires, which the way Sears is going may be sooner than later, he is throwing his hat in the ring for Oriental Guide. You didn’t hear that from me though. Okay I have had enough and I am sure you have as well. Remember your Lodge needs Masons and your Temple needs candidates. e are now well into 2017 and the band unit has been busy working on some new charts for our upcoming performances. Look for the Notables performance at the upcoming Strawberry Festival in Pungo. We will be performing on the bandstand May 27th. Come out and listen to some of our standards as well as some of our new material. The brass band will also be performing in several parades and at performances held in assisted care facilities throughout the region. A few of the band members helped with the Drum and Bugle Corps at their Fish fry performing on bugle and bass bugle. It is always fun performing with this high energy unit. We also assisted with their spring paper drive fundraising for Shriners International. It is with sadness that I report the loss of one of our long-time Notables performers. Mr. Drake Akroyd passed away March 25th after a longtime battle with Parkinson’s disease. He played with the Notables before becoming disabled.

He also played in the Tidewater Concert Band, Hampton Roads Metro Band, plus, for a few years, he managed his own Big Band ensemble and was quite the saxophone player in his day. If you played an instrument in high school or college and would like to see if you still have what it takes we can find a spot for you in our unit regardless of your level of playing. Even if you don’t play an instrument but would like to be in an active unit we are always in need of “roadies” to handle our equipment trailer, drive the float truck and keep us organized at events. We are a very active unit with rehearsals at least two or three times a month and an average of one outside performance per month. We enjoy good music and great fellowship wherever we play. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Pat McVicker or Kevin Gilbert and we’ll provide answers to any questions you may have regarding the unit. he season has begun and our Captain will be returning from the Philippines on May 2. Before he left he wished to thank all the 2016 Officers for a good job last year but it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it into the 1st qtr Hi Noble. The first parade of the year (St. Patricks) had a poor showing by the Scooters but was successful anyway (photo right). The next parade is the Nato parade, and I am looking for a good turnout. Support your unit. We are looking forward to the upcoming events especially the Imperial Session in July as well as the LUAU also on July 22. We need participation at these events and other future parades coming up this year. The By-Laws committee is working on the By-Laws and we are now at the Rules for Scooters. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on that part

of the By-Laws before we change them. Send your comments to me by Email by the End of May. Check your Scooters for the upcoming parades and advise me of your problems. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s welcome Ike back with enthusiasm and make the rest of 2017 a great year.

he first quarter is complete under the leadership of Illustrious John and his Divan with great success and look forward to continued success. Many new efforts are being reviewed to expand our fund raising efforts for the many needs of our Temple. Provost participated in the Saint Patrick Day Parade with all of the glitz and glamour of a local Mardi Gras. A great time was had by all from breakfast to the refreshment tent at the end. Our Ladies were invited to ride in the parade along with several patients, All accepted the invite and truly enjoyed the event and opportunity. Hopefully this will become an annual opportunity for our Ladies and special children. Kudos to our Captain for including the children. Provost members traveled to Greenville S.C. April 20 thru 23 for the Spring SASA Provost Meeting hosted by Hejazz Temple. The event was attended by 17 members and Ladies who enjoyed a weekend of Hospitality rooms, Hospital tours, BBQ’s, golf match(Khedive took 2nd) and a Prime Rib dinner with a dance. Mike Warlokowski was elected to the position of Captain with Major and Chief yet to come. Congrats Mike. The Spring BBQ fund raiser was a great success thanks to all of the nobility and friends who came out and supported the Provost in this endeavor. French fries by our Fry Masters Butch Casper and Roy McKinney were again consumed with enthusiasm as 100 + lbs of spuds were fried to perfection. They were assisted by Mike Cannon. A great breakfast was provded for the workers. Thanks to all who assisted from Friday grinding (fresh BBQ) until final cleanup Sunday. Thanks to all the ladies for again providing a fabulous dessert table. The Captain continues to furnish dinners before the meetings. Drop by and check us out. We are always looking for a few good men, come join us, we meet the 2nd Wednesday, of each month at the Temple. reeting all from Surprising Suffolk. Suffolk Shrine Club has been busy this quarter. We have continued to work on our property. We meet the 4th Wednesday every month, unless otherwise noted. Our meeting stats a 6:30 with a social and 7:00 PM Dinner. We welcome everybody out and hope you will make at least one visit in the coming year. We welcome all Nobles and Masons. We hosted an oyster roast in March with great attendance from the Temple. A great time was had by all. We enjoyed Steamed oysters, fried oysters, fried fish, frog legs, and hush puppies. Thanks for coming out and making it a fun filled afternoon. Special thanks to Brother George Poston who set up a tent with heat. It was the coldest day of the winter as we had planned. We also supported the Potentate John Howe and the rest of the Divan in their election in January. Congrats to our new Divan, you will do great. In February a group from Suffolk Shrine Club went to Elizabeth City for their annual Venison feast. We were successful in out bidding the Chesapeake Shrine club to get a delicious cake. Needless to say, it was gone before we left the building. Suffolk Shrine Club held its Official Visit our new Divan was held January 25, 2017. This year we combined with Portsmouth Club for a Joint Visit. The meeting was well attended and a good time was had by all. We want to congratulate our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir John Howe. We look forward to working with the entire newly elected Divan and having a great year. The new OG Mark Cook was given a bucket to hold surprises for you at all upcoming events. We also had a group of Nobles travel to other official visits around the Temple. We took a group to the Pote’s Ball. What a great job Potentate John Howe did throwing that party. It is such a pleasure to come together as Nobles and Socialize. Once again, GREAT JOB. Lastly, we attended the Roanoke/Chowan Shrine Club Fish muddle. The catfish muddle was out of this world. Color Guard

n December 2016 the Khedive Color Guard held their annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers for 2017. On behalf of Illustrious Sir Woody Brown, Illustrious Sir David Monell was the Installing Officer for the event and did a magnificent job. However, unbeknownst to him, the Color Guard had a surprise in store for him as well (page 25). You see, Illustrious Sir David is also a Past Captain of the Khedive Color Guard. In fact, he was the first Color Guard Past Captain to be elected Potentate of the Khedive Shrine. The members of the Color Guard were justifiably proud to purchase and present the Illustrious Sir with his Potentates Fez at his installation. Illustrious Sir David joined the Order of the Mystic Shrine in 1991 and the Color Guard in 1995. He worked his way up through the ranks to become Captain of the unit in 1998. He also served on the Khedive Board of Trustees for 3 years (96-98), was President of the Portsmouth Shrine Club in 1995, and served as President of the Khedive Units and Clubs Association in 1997. He then went on to become Potentate of the

Khedive Shrine in 2002 and President of the South Atlantic Shrine Association (SASA) in 2009. He is currently an honorary member of the Khedive Provost, Hillbillies and Legion of Honor. Upon becoming a Past Potentate in January of 2003, Illustrious Sir David gave his Potentates Fez back to the Color Guard to be displayed in the Color Guard’s trophy case. In early 2016, it was noted that we had a Potentates Fez in our Trophy case without identification and therefore, no one other than the Color Guard knew who it belonged to. With the blessing of the unit, Noble Brother Pat Garrison sat out to rectify that by finding a box for that very important Fez. Finally, after the completion of the Installation of Officers, Noble Pat asked Illustrious Sir David to come off the stage where the beautiful and long overdue Fez Box was presented. So if you get a moment, please wander down to the end of the Uniformed Units hallway and look in the Color Guard trophy case and check out the Fez box the unit was proud to present to Illustrious Sir David L. Monell, our first Color Guard Captain to become Potentate of the Khedive Shrine and President of SASA. The officers and members of the Color Guard are extremely proud of the accomplishments of Illustrious Sir David over the years and happy to call him one of their own.

n 1962 I went to work as an apprentice pipefitter. I was assigned to a supervisor who was one of many working on the commissioning of the USS America. Sitting on the dock by the ship were several Utility boats that would be loaded on board to be used by the officers and crew when visiting the many foreign ports. I said to myself, one day I’ll own me a 40 footer like that. Fast forward to 2006 a young family friend of ours who owned Quality Boats on Victory Blvd. in Portsmouth said to me “Mr C why don’t you come and buy the 40 foot PE that is on our lot?” I bought the boat and he gave me a bay in the boat yard to do the conversion to turn it into what it is today. A double cabin, pilot house cruiser complete with central heat and air conditioning, and a bath and half bath.

In honor of the boats history having served aboard the aircraft carrier, USS America, we named her “Miss America.” We have cruised with the Khedive Yacht Club to many ports up and down the coast as far north as Fairley creek north of Baltimore and South to Edenton N.C. She is resting in her boat house at my dock loaded, fueled up and ready for another fun filled summer of crusing with the Yacht Club. Come join us. We would love to have you.

obles, it has been a great year so far. We had a fantastic time sailing the high seas of the Ocean View St. Patrick’s parade (photo right). The natives were restless that day and we took on heavy cannon fire along the journey in the form of Jell-O shooters but I’m happy to report we had no injuries and the Bounty of Hope sustained no significant damage! We had a great turnout of Mates for the Potentate’s Ball and Chesapeake Shrine Club Oyster roast. I trust the CSC had a very profitable day because the turnout was incredible! Down river, we arrrr looking forward to supporting the Provost BBQ and Motor Corp Shrimp Feast. I hear the Provost has the 2nd best BBQ in Khedive next to the Swashbucklers of course!! We’re also looking forward to the Spring Open House and Ceremonial and Rodeo in June where you’ll find us slingin’ peanuts and drinks to the crowds in the stands. Speaking of pig, we will have arrr 6th “Ever” Pig Pickin to be held September 30th from 2 – 5. This event just keeps growing every year and we really appreciate the support. This year we arrrr happy to have The Baddadz back for arrrr band.

reetings to all my Noble Brothers ,this report has me pretty happy as we have just concluded our annual paper drive. In two days on Easter week-end at the Gloucester Wal-Mart Noble Rob Parkers team amassed a grand total of $2200.00 + for the transportation fund.It was two beautiful days but the Nobles freely gave of their time on this important family week-end and we showed how strong the Tidewater Shrine Club’s commitment is for our children. I will go ahead and put in my plug for our Shriner of the quarter by calling out Noble Rob Parker. Rob has served as president twice, Paper Drive co-ordinator more times than I can count, Chief cook and bottle washer many many times and just all around be there guy. We are so lucky to have so many members like him that are always ready to give their time and talent. Thanks Rob and thanks to all my brother nobles. The Daffodil parade was a little sparse for us this

The annual picnic will once again be at Noble Woody James beautiful home and we will have a phone tree with directions and instructions. The onions are on their way and we expect to have the same excellent results as always. This fund raiser helps us to maintain our club but all the customers enjoy the product and we are definitely in the “ Public Eye “for a proud reason. Never hurts to be in the public eye. This summer will be full of many events, don’t forget the Rodeo. It will be almost impossible to attend all the Temple, units and clubs events that are out there. All I can say is the food is always great, the entertainment out of this world and best of all the comraderie we share is unbeatable. So have a good summer for yourself. As always feel free to join us at Nick’s in Gloucester at the bottom of the bridge every third Thursday. Fellowship at 6:15 dinner and meeting at 7:00. All are welcome and we hope to see you there. s always, the Second Quarter was a busy time for the Legion of Honor. On March 4th we presented the colors for the Shrine Night with the Admirals. The Colors were presented by CDR Greg Gustafson, PC Jack Laursen, 1st Vice CDR Dave Connor, and 2nd Vice CDR Harold Campbell. On March 5th we presented the Colors for the LOSNA Zulekia Court 35 installation of the 2017 High Priestess. Colors were provided by CDR Greg Gustafson, SASA CDR/Ill/PC Paul Pennybacker, PC Jack Laursen, and 2nd Vice CDR Harold Campbell. On March 12th the LOH held their annual BBQ, with entertainment provided by the Joe Singer and The Good Ol’ Boy’s and the Suffolk Peanut City Cloggers. We had a great turnout from the Legion and special thanks to our Ladies for selling the 50/50, raffle tickets for a 39” HDTV, three gift basket and deserts: Betty Cunningham, Helen Lee, Harriet Garland, Barbara Holden, Vanya Conner, Helen Gordon, Nancy Pennybacker, Glenda Reed, and LaVerne Kingsley. At our meeting in March LN Will Griffin donated a complete POW/MIA table for the unit room. LN Alton L. McKeithan, USN (Ret.), 94, passed away on March 26, 2017. The family received friends at HollomonBrown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel on Friday March 31st. The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday April 1st in the funeral home chapel. Entombment followed in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. LN John Godfrey Glauner, USN (Ret.), 85, passed away April 5, 2017. The family received friends at HollomonBrown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 1 to 3 p.m. with Masonic Rites at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Dr., Chesapeake, VA 23320. Get Ready to Share Your Fraternal Pride on June 6 On June 6, 1876, the Imperial Council, the original governing body of the Shriners fraternity, was founded. To honor this important milestone in our history, Shriners International has declared June 6 as Shriners International Awareness Day. On this day, nobles everywhere are encouraged to celebrate their great fraternity and raise awareness of its importance in their communities. The leadership of Shriners International is mindful that June 6 is also honored as D-Day, the day in 1944 when Allied forces landed on the beach in Normandy to begin the invasion of northern France. While Shriners International certainly honors the valor and courage of everyone who served on D-Day, many historic events happen on a single day; and June 6 also holds a separate, special meaning for our fraternity.

A Time to Honor and Celebrate Our Rich Heritage

On June 6, Shriners International asks all nobles to publicly display their pride in their fraternity by wearing a fez (when appropriate), hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item with the Shriners International logo. In addition to wearing Shriner apparel, Shriners International also encourages all temples and Shrine clubs to organize special events at their temples and in their communities to honor our fraternity’s incredible history and achievements, and invite others to participate, as well. Along with increasing awareness, these events will also support membership efforts, because the more information we share with our communities about Shriners International, the more potential we build for membership growth. Participating in this international day of recognition will motivate potential members to learn more about us, and also inspire our current members to become more involved. Shriners International Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity to showcase our pride; share information about our fraternity and the benefits of becoming part of an organization dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropy; and highlight the different ways our organizations impact the world around us. On this day, we ask you to honor our history by sharing both our heritage and your own unique story of being a Shriner, as well as our philanthropy’s mission to improve the lives of children and make the world a better place.

Get Involved

Here are a few ways both nobles and temples can get involved: ▶ Wear your fez on Shriners International Awareness Day when appropriate (during an official Shriners function).

▶ Show your pride in Shriners International by wearing a hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item with the fraternal logo. Your family members can also wear appropriate clothing items that promote the fraternity. ▶ Organize an event at your temple or in your local community. Inviting the public to participate will increase awareness and interest in both your local temple and Shriners International. ▶ Promote Shriners International Awareness Day on your temple website and social media pages. Announce the date at all club and unit meetings to ensure all nobles are informed. ▶ Post information about our organizations on your own social media pages on June 6. ▶ Distribute fraternal literature and pocket petitions to potential prospects during community events. ▶ Hold an Open House at your temple. ▶ Contact your local media about your Shriners International Awareness Day events. ▶ Host a Media Night. ▶ Ask family members to take fraternal literature to their place of employment, if permitted.

During this time, we hope you also take the time to reflect on why the fraternity is important to you personally, and why you became a member. We are all a part of the greatest organization in the world – we should be proud to share our enthusiasm for the fraternity with the world around us, and Shriners International Awareness Day is a great opportunity to do so.
