I

llustrious Sirs & Nobles All, First, let me say thank you for supporting me in the election at the business meeting on January 14th. I am truly humbled that you have the trust in me and confidence in my ability to lead the Temple in 2017. I view it as a great honor, and an even greater responsibility.

My Lady Valerie and I are ready to make 2017 a year to remember.

Since our beginning in 1909, there are 100 Past Potentates that have plowed the same field that I’ll be plowing in 2017. I’m relatively certain that every one of them have had a goal of leaving the Temple and fraternity a little better than it was when they inherited leadership of them. My goal for 2017 is no different than any of my predecessors.

My theme for this year is “Charting Our Future”, and the logo on my pin is that of a compass rose. For a fair portion of my time in the Navy I navigated and conned some of the larger Navy ships. Charts and compasses are so important in that world. Together they provide a goal (to what port are we headed), a plan (a charted track to follow to get us there) and milestones (how do we measure our progress). The compass provided a means of steering the correct course. As we sailed, we continually measured our progress, and adjusted course and speed to stay on track. As I’ve explained during my official visits to the Shrine Clubs thus far, this methodology is the foundation of any Fortune 500 company’s business plan. They have business plans that include goals and objectives, paths to attain them, and metrics to measure progress. My chief goal for this year is to work with the Divan to develop a business plan that will give us a course to steer for at least the next five years.

Membership is our number one priority this year. Each year our numbers continue to dwindle and costs continue to increase.

Each year our numbers continue to dwindle and costs continue to increase. We started 2017 with 1700 members, 168 less than last year. At the January business meeting I appointed every Noble in the Temple to the Membership Team. All that I ask from the Team is that each of us represent the Shrine well in the community and in our Blue Lodges. Wear a shrine shirt or put a shrine pin on your lapel, ball cap or collar. Make yourself visible as a Shriner. When someone asks “what’s that”, take the time to explain it to them. Eventually they’ll ask “how can I be a part of that?” When you tell them that they first must be a Master Mason, they’ll ultimately ask how to do that, opening Masonry as a discussion item. We need to help our candidates through the Blue Lodge and into the Shrine. Once we get them here, we need to continue to mentor them as they learn more about what our organization is and try to find their niche in it. More on that will follow later, as we get closer to the Spring Ceremonial.

Please talk to the Worshipful Master of your Lodge and ask him to invite us to come and talk. I’m willing to go myself, we have a Speaker’s Bureau member who was a patient when he was in his youth, and it’s possible to arrange for a Shriner’s patient & parent to attend and speak.

Lady Valerie and I look forward to working with you and your Ladies this year, and seeing you at the various events at the Temple.

reetings Nobles, First let me thank everyone that attended the Annual Business Meeting and Election of Officers. Thank you for the support you showed in electing me Chief Rabban. I look forward to working with all our Nobles in keeping Khedive Shrine the NUMBER ONE Temple in the state.

Lady Susan and I also look forward to working with Ill. Sir John and Lady Valerie this year and I ask each of you to show your support for the upcoming year.

Mark Cook is our new Oriental Guide and I’d like to welcome him and his lady Valerie to the Divan.

As we all know membership and retention need to be our major goals for the year. We hear this every year and now it is more important than ever for the survival of our Temple. I ask that each of you find one Mason that would make a great Shriner. Also take a look around and see who is missing from our meetings. Give them a call and let’s see if we can’t bring them back to the Shrine.

Many of you have already seen the beautiful renovation of the lobby and front rest rooms. If you haven’t, it will be a very pleasant surprise. As you plan your fund raisers this year let us not forget our building fund. We all own a part of the Temple and it is up to us to maintain the building and grounds. We need to all come together and work hard for Khedive Shrine.

If there is anything that we on the Divan can do for you or your Unit or Club, please feel free to contact any of us.

Although I continue to learn I still do my best to make Khedive Temple better and succeed in 2017. I know with the help from all of you, Khedive can have a great year.

Ill. Sir John has planned some great fundraisers and in order to make them profitable it will take all the Nobility to support them. Come on out and enjoy all the festivities and an active be part of your Temple.

Nobles please check your dues cards and make sure they are current. Also, the Recorder’s office spends a lot of money sending out reminders on Rodeo Tickets, Seafood Tickets and Insurance (for Nobles who have parade insurance on their personal unit vehicles from the Temple), so please send your payments in as soon as they are due.

I look forward to seeing each of you on the street at our first parade on March 18th (Saint Patrick’s Day).

Nobles, in closing a reminder to all Units/Clubs heads to turn in their 990 tax form as early as possible.

obles, first of all Happy New Year to all. On behalf of my Lady Violy, thanks again for your continued support.

We are on our third year of our journey as a member of your Divan. We could not do it without you. My congratulations to all the elected officers of the Units and Clubs and also to the elected and appointed divans. we welcome our new Oriental Guide Mark Cook and Lady Valerie. Lets congratulate our new Potentate, Illustrious John Howe and Lady Valerie and give our all to support them in 2017. Lets all work in harmony and enthusiasm for the years success. Thanks to Illustrious Woody Brown, and Lady Terry and the whole 2016 official family. You all did an awesome job. It was a enjoyable experience in 2016.

Here is a summary of some of the happenings in 2016: -43 Nobles were awarded the MacArthur Award certificates.

-37 are eligible to receive the Go Getter Award.

-42 new members were enrolled in the 100 Million Dollar Club, Illustrious Buddy Bagley was the last member to enroll in 2016. We must remember the support of Noble Richard Naujoks. He departed this world on Dec. 17, 2016.

Let us give thanks to or Nobles who served, participated in, and dedicated their time all these years for the success of this Temple. It is saddening to see their Units fold due to different circumstances that are beyond our control.

Lets recognize all the officers and nobles of the following groups: Arab Patrol- 1909 Captain Hugh Spivey Chanters- 1926 Captain Charles Downing Horse Patrol- 1978 Captain Kenny Askew Corvettes- 1982 Captain Alex Kupetz Thanks for all the happy and enjoyable years. You will be missed.

We also have to recognize the sacrifices, efforts, and contributions of or nobles who ae behind the scene, but play a big part in our organization.

-All of our Roadrunners who drove our patients to our hospitals. Special recognition is given to Noble Ed McAlpine for the near 200 trips he made.

obles, As a new year starts I want to thank all of you that attended the Business Meeting to show your support for our Temple and voted for me to advance to High Priest and Prophet. Lady Marion and I look forward to helping lead our Temple iinto the future.

Our Potentate has appointed me Chairman of the 100 Million Dollar Club for this year. This club was started to help defray the cost of running our Hospitals.

It will be great if you will consider becoming a member.

If you are already a member, please, consider rejoining which is easy to do. First, you can see me when the Divan visits the Units and Clubs, or by filling out the form in the Hi-Noble and mailing it to the Temple. Also, you can visit the web site and use your credit card. With your membership you will receive a certificate and a Tassel Holder. With your help you will be ensuring the continued endowment to support our Hospitals.

I have again been appointed Chairman of the Golf Classic. The only information I have now is the date which is Thursday, September 28, 2017. The course will be determined later.

Again, I thank you for your support on election day.

ou have to be careful what you wish for. I wanted to start through the line and was elected Oriental Guide with no opposition. That could only mean two things, either I thoroughly intimidated the competition or I am dumb as a rock. After my first official visit to Chesapeake, the latter may be true.

When the official visits end, I look forward to serving with Illustrious Sir John Howe and the rest of the Divan. There is no doubt that the Oriental Guide is a very unique job for the first couple of months. My Lady Valerie is behind me fully and encourages me to leave the house as often as need be, even more.

The Potentate has appointed me Hi Noble Booster Chairman and I ask that each Unit Head, Club President and their Secretary’s help in our support of the Hi Noble. Ten dollars gets you an entire year, a good bargain and a chance to see your name in print. If you have a friend who is not active, maybe invest ten dollars for that Noble.

Thank you for your support. Over the next five years we will face many challenges. I look Forward to sharing the time with you my fellow brother and Nobles.

hank you so much for the honor and privilege of representing Khedive as First Lady in 2017. It’s going to be a great year and I’m looking forward to serving you.

This year’s First Lady’s program is the sale of a product called Aspirinpods. These are little pill containers that can be conveniently attached to anything, such as your golf bag, back pack, key chain, or purse. From the name you know that these are meant to hold aspirin. The heart shape reminds you that the aspirin are to be taken immediately with the onset of heart attack symptoms.

There are two beneficiaries of this program. The first beneficiary is the patients Khedive sends to Shriners Hospital for Children® in Cincinnati. For Cincinnatihospital burn patients, a summer camp called Camp Ytiliba (ability spelled backwards) is one of the programs used to help patients develop new life skills. The one week summer camp program provides opportunities to gain confidence and rebuild self-esteem…they can just be kids again having fun with others just like themselves.

100% of the net proceeds from sales are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children® of Cincinnati to send children to Camp Ytiliba.

The second beneficiary is you, your families, and friends.

Aspirin inhibits the formation of blood clots that might clog the arteries supplying the heart and brain. The trick is to have aspirin handy when it’s needed. Welcome Aspirinpod. Being prepared could mean survival. Our

own Ill Sir Don Meyers and Noble Hugh Spivey both used aspirin after experiencing heart attack symptoms and survived.

Aspirinpods are on sale for $6 each or 4 for $20. Please consider buying more than one and passing them to family members. Camp Ytiliba is a worthy program and aspirin could save lives! Thank you so much for your support.

llustrious Sir, Illustrious Sirs, Members of the Divan, and Nobles All: First and foremost, I would like to take the opportunity to send heartfelt congratulations to Illustrious Sir John Howe on being nominated and elected to the position of Potentate for the ensuing Shrine year. Secondly, congratulations are in order to each of the members of the Divan for the election to their respective positions. I look forward to serving Illustrious Sir John and trust that this will be a very exciting year for Khedive Shrine.

A “Thank You” is in order to Illustrious Sir John for appointing me to serve as Director of Uniformed Units for the 2017 Shrine year. Noble John Brown (Provost Guard) will be serving as the Assistant Director of Uniformed Units.

We have already hit the ground running with the Memorial Service and are truly looking forward to the remainder of the year as we begin visiting and encouraging our many units to attend as many functions as possible which will not only bring camaraderie amongst us but also afford the opportunity for Khedive Shrine to make a visible presence within our many communities.

As you are aware, our first Parade will be the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ocean View on March 18th. As in the past, Illustrious Sir Bill Kern will host a pre-parade breakfast; flyers for the event are forthcoming. We will also be having refreshments after the Parade at Knights’ Hall on Government Avenue.

As we participate in the many parades throughout the year, we are not only having fun but we are afforded the opportunity to make the public aware of who we are and what it is that we do, provide much need transportation and care to many children at Shriner’s Hospitals.

The Temple website contains a calendar of up coming events. I encourage each of you to utilize the website to stay abreast of upcoming events and other pertinent information that may be distributed.

In closing, I would like to say once again “I look forward to serving the Temple as Director of Uniform Units.”

017 is here and it is time to shake off the cobwebs, get off your rear ends and get busy. And I say that in a most friendly manner. I am never sure when this rag will get to your house so I just guess and hope I do not miss anything. That being said first up on February 25th is the Potentate`s Ball. This is always a good time and always well attended. Come on out and see how much weight people gained over the holidays. Heck if I wasn`t going to the Daytona 500 I might just join you. On to March, the 4th is the date of our annual Shrine Night with the Norfolk Admirals. The money raised from this event goes to support the Roadrunners and I cannot think of a better way to put it to good use. It is worth the admission cost just to see the Motor Corps slide around the ice during intermission. St. Patrick’s Day Parade is next on March 18th. This is a great time to get all dressed up and show the public that yes sometimes we do put on funny hats and drive little cars. But it also is a great opportunity to promote our mission and that is helping the kids.

Next up is one of my personnel favorites the Chesapeake Shrine Club’s annual Oyster Roast (photo top) and this year will be our 40th event. That is quite a legacy. So shake off the cabin fever and start the festival year off right.

April 9th is the Temple’s annual Easter egg hunt.

So bring out the kids, grandkids, neighbor’s kids and enjoy the hunt with the Clowns and everyone involved.

Nobles and Ladies the year is just beginning and already the Units and Clubs are going to work on their own functions of which there is too many to list. Please visit our web site at khedive.org. I am sure you will find something to your liking. We hope to see you around.

he 67th Annual Oyster Bowl Football Game has come and gone, with The Old Dominion Monarchs victories again in their 6th appearance in the Oyster Bowl against Florida International Golden Panthers 42-28. Ray Lawry was named the Oyster Bowl MVP for the first time in his career, as the junior running back rushed for 194 yards and an additional 23 yards in the air with 3 touchdowns to his credit.

I’d like to thank all the Nobility and their ladies, Units and Clubs who came out and supported this year’s Oyster Bowl through tickets purchases, donations and sponsorships. A special thanks goes out Harry Tew and Andy Bell for all their hard work putting on a Great Tailgate Party. This year we had over 467 tailgaters attending the party, with Imperial Sir Jim Cain in attendance. Alan Cannon along with Bill Lauterbach and the Provost Guard once again set up an alternate Tailgate area in the main parking area next to the Stadium.

Membership Committe Report Noble J. Richard Rawls, Chairman

N

obles, My name is Noble Richard Rawls and Ill. Sir John Howe, Potentate of Khedive Shriners, has appointed me Membership Chairman of Khedive Shriners for 2017. As with many appointed jobs within any organization, the newly appointed person is expected to come in the door with all kinds of wonderful ideas of how to fix a problem. You may have noted that Ill. Woody Brown last year worked extremely hard to do what he could to improve the membership of Khedive Shriners by visiting the majority of the Blue Lodges that are within our jurisdiction. We thank him for that major effort that he undertook, but even he noted at the Annual Meeting that it did not provide the success he had hoped for. Membership has continued to decline for many years and many people have worked hard to find the answer to the problem. We cannot stop the Black Camels which tend to outnumber the new members we bring in. But I hope that we can focus on those members that have been suspended for non-payment of dues; those have demitted for various reasons and on those that simply do not attend.

How many of you have signed a petition in your Blue Lodge as the recommender or voucher? How many of you have signed an application for a Blue Lodge

member to join the Shrine? How many of you have maintained a mentorship type of contact with each person that you supported with your signature in your Blue Lodge or in the Shrine?

We seem to have a tendency to sign a petition or application to get a person in the door, but fail to mentor to that person to make sure the journey they have started becomes a rewarding one to remember. If you thought enough of a person to help them into the door, why not think enough of them to help them be successful in their Masonic Career. I wish I could state that your Membership Committee has all of the answers to fix the membership issues, but we don’t. What I will tell you is that your Committee will be embracing

the programs established by Shriners International and will do all we can to advance the cause. But with that said, we cannot do it by ourselves. This is where each and every member of Khedive Shriners comes in. Ill. John Howe made all of you an active member of the Membership Team. No, you are not on the Membership Committee, but you, as a team of Shriners working for the same cause, can help to show the improvement needed to fix a problem that currently exists not only at Khedive but within our Blue Lodges.

Nobles, if we hope to fix the membership problems that currently exist in both our Blue Lodges and here at Khedive, we must work together to make it happen. This is a problem that belongs to all of us and a problem that will take all of us to fix. I would encourage each of you to seriously contemplate how you personally can help with membership and to actively do it. Don’t just think about it, don’t just assume that someone else will take care of it, but get up and help do something productive to help the cause.

I look forward to seeing you all at various events and also look forward to working with you to help increase our membership.

Transportation Report Cliff Atkinson, Director of Transportation

O

n 1 December 2016, I began my Eleventh year as Director of Transportation. When I started I thought I was pretty well versed in what was required to provide transportation for our patients and what constituted an acceptable patient for our hospitals.

Boy was I wrong. I have since found out that I was a “babe in the woods.”

I seem to learn something new each week. When I took this position, we only transported patients to Greenville and Philadelphia and provided air transportation to Cincinnati and Montreal. We now provide van transportation to Cincinnati along with air travel. I have found that it pays to provide local transportation to and from the airport. We have fewer flights being missed hence reduced costs. We now have a couple of patients that fly to Chicago for treatment. We also had a patient attending a special program at the St. Louis hospital.

While the official position is that we provide medical care for orthopedic problems, spinal cord injuries, burns, and cleft lip and palate, this is only the surface of what we do. Orthopedic problems means we take care of almost any condition affecting the neuromuscular/skeletal

area which covers a multitude of conditions. Treating burn injuries has expanded into birthmark removal, ear deformities, major ear canal problems, and scar reduction. Now when we get a call about whether or not we treat a condition, if we are not familiar with the condition we call the hospital to find out.

When I first started, a prospective patient’s family had a 3 page application to fill out and send to the hospital.

Now they just have to call the hospital directly. They no longer need a Shriner to sponsor them.

While this position seems to be constantly evolving, the one constant that I have enjoyed has been the unfailing support of the Nobility of Khedive Shrine. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You! Isn’t it great to be a “Khedive Shriner!”

O

nce again, the Shrine was prominently on display during the Rose Bowl festivities with a beautiful float providing visibility not only for our hospitals but indeed for Shrine International. I am always amazed at the attention given those all flower FLOAT presentations.

I am also happy to report that as we say goodbye to 2016 we say thanks for the success in raising the $1.5 million necessary in acquiring the special “Navigation System” technology which provides our surgeons more precision in their procedures. Another example of our being and remaining at the top of orthopedic hospitals world-wide.

The Philadelphia hospital is also pleased that the newly instituted “Fracture Clinic” has exceeded all expectations in anticipated volume and further enhances our visibility in Philadelphia proper.

Lastly, we are happy and pleased that our efforts in developing the Tele Health dimension of service delivery is proving to be the answer to meeting the needs of children in more remote places such as our clinic in Puerto Rico and elsewhere.

2017 is off to a very robust start!

i Nobles, Greetings from the Khedive Autos. Phew, things have finally calmed down from all the end of year activities!!

Our car show is done for 2016, now we have to get started on 2017’s show and another year’s worth of activities.

We had an excellent Christmas party and installation of our new officers: Captain Jack Smith, 2nd Lt Dave Clark, 1st Lt Bob Wadsworth and Secretary/Treasurer Skip Patnode. A big thank you to our past Captain, Pete Wright and his Lady, Debbie for the excellent job they did for the past 2 years!!

We are looking forward to the new parade season with the first one being the Ocean View St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the 18th of March.

We meet at the Shrine Center on the second Monday of the month. 6:00 pm Social, 7:00 pm meeting and we try to be done by 8:00 pm. If you have an old car, convertible, unique car or are just old and sick of walking in parades, come join us. We can always use new members and riders!

Whatever you do, join a unit or club or both. That’s where the fun is!

We look forward to working with our own Beach Bum Brother and Peninsula Shrine Club Member Illustrious Sir John Howe and supporting his theme of “Charting our Future”. If you have seen us riding in various parades in the past, we do our best to interact with the folks along the parade routes, especially the young children. Their expressions as we ride up to them and speak with them are amazing. We as Beach Bum Brothers do our best to spread the good cheer and message of Khedive to everyone we see along the parade routes and have been well received by all. Having fun and spreading the message about the great work of the Shriners is what we do best.

The Beach Bum Brothers are beginning their eighth year in Khedive and are excited about being a part of the various Shrine events. We are planning to participate in everything that our schedules allow. The officers of the Beach Bum Brother’s Unit for 2017 are Captain, Noble Richard Rawls, 1st Lieutenant, Noble Arthur Gandy and Secretary/Treasurer Noble Bruce Edwards. Our other members include Noble Robert Parker, Ill. John Howe and Noble Nick Raffaele. As you can see we are small in numbers but do all we can to represent Khedive and Shriners whenever possible in the area.

We are set to start another year of parades. The Fire Brigade is a small unit that does not march in parades, we ride. If you want to ride on the back of a parade ready

1941 Ford Fire Engine come join us. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is right around the corner. If you are looking for a unit to join or just curious about us come to our meeting. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month.

ello again from the eighth oldest unit in Khedive Temple. It seems like only yesterday we were crawling around the Temple foyer in diapers. The big man, Dave “Gonzo” Davis is back at the helm and we all pledge our support, kind of. The first order of the day is to thank all the Clowns that came out and supported the Temple Christmas events. It seems like everything is better with Clowns in the room.

Next up, we would like to send out a “Big” get well soon to fellow Clown Ray Gates. It seems Ray was involved in a wrestling match with a dresser and a flight of stairs and loss. Not as bad as Ronda Rousey but close.

Maybe next time he should pick on something his size like an end table on the deck. Just kidding Ray best of luck on a speedy recovery and some productive therapy.

We look forward to seeing you back on the streets.

Back to business, the Clown barbeque team just mixed up a big fresh batch barbeque and it is sitting there ready and waiting to brighten up your next function. As usual catch up with any Clown member or Head Chef, Harry “BoBo” Tew and get you a couple pounds. Leroy Lane also has the combination to the vault so you can drop by an see him as well during Temple business hours.

Parades are up next and right off the bat we have the Mack Daddy of them all the St. Patrick`s Day Parade on March 18th. Guys and gals if you have not participated in or at the very least watched this parade you are living in the stone ages. It is off the chain in every way. We always have a full line up of Clowns riding, walking and clowning around. We will be looking for you.

On April 9th the Temple will be holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt and the Clowns will be there in force blowing up balloons and making kids smile.

As always if anyone out there would like to experience what it feels like to make child smile this is the unit for you. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month in the Clown room. Come on out and see if you fit in and we will do the rest.

ongratulations to Illustrious Sir John Howe and his Divan on their election to serve our Temple for the year 2017. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir John Howe on my appointment to the position of Temple Director. I consider it an honor to serve with this Divan.

The Staff is looking forward to working with you and your Divan. If we are asked to serve “CHARTING OUR FUTURE.” Congratulations to Noble Mark Cook our new Oriental Guide for the year of 2017.

Saturday 14 January 2017 the Temple was opened for business and the election of Officers, Representative to the Imperial Council and members of the Board of Trustees. The report on Temple membership, it was reported that we started the year with 1871 Nobles and we lost a total of 156 Nobles. Illustrious Sir John Howe asked all in attendance to serve as his “Membership Committee” to help stop this downward trend. I do not know the answer on how we can sell the Shrine to our Brother Masons in these trying times.

Congratulations to the Old Dominion Monarchs on their win in the 67th Oyster Bowl Game on 26 November 2016, and their donation to our Transportation Fund, to get our kids from home to the hospitals and back. This could not be done without Noble Chairman Terry Riley and his Oyster Bowl Committee.

Sunday 15 January 2017 the annual Devotional and Memorial Service was held at the khedive Shrine Center.

As always a beautiful service followed by the reading of the names of our 75 deceased Nobles, Taps and closing remarks. The service was conducted by Temple Chaplain, the Reverend Noble Scott Foxwell. This years list of deceased Nobles, included the names of two past Potentates, a great lost to our Temple, Illustrious Sir Robert H. Foxwell Jr., and Illustrious Sir Charles E. Lee. They will be missed by all.

ongratulations to Joe Harris and his work as Director the past two years. He has established himself as another great Past Director. Those past Directors guide us on a steady and growing path. They keep our tradition and commitment alive.

We ended 2016 with a great parade at the Urbana Oyster Festival. This was a long and emotional parade. It seemed we saved the best for last. Congratulations to our newest Boot: Jordan Ludbag and his lady Marrine. Noel Corneja His snare proficiency at this parade was inspiring and appreciated.

The Drum & Bugle Corps preformed at Footers Sports Bar & Grill to Honor all who served on Veterans Day. It was an honor and privilege to play a tribute to all that have served and those presently serving. We must always keep them in our prayers. The rendition of Taps by Cesar Gelle was very passionate and respectful.

The 2016 ODU Oyster Bowl led by our distinguished Past Director Terry Riley. This was a huge success, with over 440 in attendance, and spring like weather. We had great Shrine participation and owe a tremendous graduated to the Hillbillies, Clowns, Swashbucklers, and the Chesapeake Shrine Club for an over the Chart presentation of Oysters, Stew, Wings and other comfort foods. We thank Richard, Cesar and Jessy for operating the gate. It is with a heavy heart that that I must ask for prayers for our Nobles that have loved ones that are in the hands of our creator. Only he can heal the pain because we all share in the loss. We had the honor of attending a Celebration of Life for Lady Jessica Glassman. Her leadership with the Shrine and Ladies of the Drum & Bugle Corps leaves a large void and her legacy will be remembered.

Please keep our Shrine children, sick and distressed in your thoughts and prayers. Remember to give thanks to the men and women protecting our country, past and present.

bring you Greetings from the quarries known as the Chesapeake Shrine Club. First off I would like to give a big shout out to now Past President Dave McClellan for an outstanding year at the helm of the Shrine Club. We had great speakers, good food and fine fellowship. Now Dave it is time to settle into the “amen corner” and beam about “your year.”

Next up to the plate is Al Kinchen who is wearing so many hats this year he may need a new head by the end of the year.

Upcoming events and we have plenty. First up is the granddaddy of them all, The Oyster Roast (flyer page 1).

This is the first big event of the year and it is a great time to clear out all of those cobwebs and shake off the cabin fever.

The date of the event is March 25 and the times are from 1:00 to 4:00. We are selling tickets everywhere and they are a steal at $35.00 in advance. We truly hope to see you there.

Our April meeting is slated as the Oyster Roast workers party and the meal is on the Club to celebrate the extremely successful Oyster Roast we held. May is Ladies night and once again it will be a party on the American Rover. Nobles this is a great evening of sailing down the

Elizabeth River with your favorite girl. The special evening will be Sunday May 21st. The cost has not as of yet been established but never fear it will be a deal. Do not wait until the last minute book your seats now.

June is Khedive Rodeo month with the Rodeo dates being June 9-10. We need help everywhere. There will of course be more to follow as the date gets closer. The meeting in June will be Past Potentate’s night. So let`s fill the room up in support of those who have lead this great Temple through thick and thin.

That is about as far out as I am going to reach with the calendar. Nobles I cannot close without mentioning attendance our numbers are slowly dwindling down. I will say it again what would it take for you to, once again become active in not only the Shrine Club but the Shrine Temple as well. We are open to suggestions. That’s enough rambling so remember; Chesapeake Shrine Club third weekend of the month, social starts at 6:00 with the dinner at 7:00. We’ll leave the light on for ya.

Khedive Band Director Secretary Kevin Gilbert We held election of officers and are pleased to report that Noble Pat McVicker was elected director of the band for 2017.

Noble Randy Bittner was appointed and accepted the position of AssistantDirector. Noble Kevin Gilbert was re-elected Secretary and Noble Rubin Kravitz was re-elected Treasurer.

We entered our second century as a unit in 2016 and continue to have a great time performing for audiences while bringing the mission and message of Shriners International wherever we perform.

Unfortunately, 2016 saw a lot of rain-outs for parades but we did participate in the Urbana Oyster Festival parade this quarter performing in front of crowded sidewalks throughout the parade route.

We are heading into 2017 with some new music for the Shrine Brass Band which is a smaller combo band made up entirely of Shriners. We are always looking for new members. If you played an instrument in high school or college and would like to see if you still have what it takes we can find a spot for you in our unit regardless of your level of playing. Even if you don’t play an instrument but would like to be in an active unit we are always in need of “roadies” to handle our equipment trailer, drive the float truck and keep us organized at events. We are a very active unit with rehearsals at least two or three times a month and an average of one outside performance per month.

Members of the Brass Band played in three Christmas music performances in December. We entertained the residents at Westminster Canterbury and at Kindred Nansemond Point Suffolk Rehab Center. We also played for the Khedive Suffolk Shrine Club Christmas party. A good time was had by both performers and our audiences. reeting Nobles, from our family to yours, we hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a happy new year. We would like to thank Past Potentate Ill Sir. Woody Brown and his Lovely Lady Terry for a great year. We rounded our year out with our annual Christmas party held on Dec. 17th at Smithfield Station. Along with the Christmas parade that morning, it made it a great day.

2017 is here and it is going to be a great one. The Motor Corps. would like to congratulate our new Potentate Ill Sir. John Howe and his Lady Valerie and the rest of the Divan.

We also want to congratulate a member of our unit, Noble Wayne Kelly for the 2nd year in a row has been elected as the recorder of the Temple.

We had our installation of officer’s ceremony at our Christmas party. I am honored to have been elected as the Captain of our Motor Corps. I am also honored and

welcome aboard our 1st Lt. John Skinner, 2nd Lt. Sam Patrick, along with our Secretary George Messinger and Treasurer Steve Smith.

We have a busy year starting off with Shriners Night with the Admirals. This is always a fun night and the kids love it when we have our cars on the ice. We are all looking forward to getting our cars out of the pits and back on the streets. So best to you all and hope we all have great year.

Golf Club Scheduler Johnnie Chander Greetings from The Khedive Shrine Golf Club and hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Now we are planning our 2017 golf season and the first outing for the season will be held at the Ocean View Golf Course in Norfolk on March 14, 2017, 9:A.M. shot gun start.

Before I go any further, let me go over the 2016 golf season.

Last year’s 2016 golf season started out being a very wet one, we had 7 rain-outs and one cancelation before the weather started to shine and stay dry for our Tuesday outings, then we had four of our members make Hole-InOnes during the season.

Our last golf outing for the 2016 season was November 15, 2016 and it was moved from the Ocean View Golf Course to the Red Wing Lakes Golf Course, at which time we name the Club Champion, gave out prizes, and had election of officers and lunch. Potentate Woody Brown, and his Divan Officers installed the Newly Elected 2017 Khedive Shrine Golf Club Officers., which are follows, President: J.W.Wilson, Vice President: Robert Collins, Sec/ Tres: Clif Smith P.P., Board Member: Bill Hoggard, Chaplin (Appointed) Ben Scofield and Johnnie Chandler: Director of Activities (Team Scheduler).

The Khedive Shrine Golf Club Champion for 2016 was won by Noble Bruce Lowery with a net score of 60.5, plus he won his flight. The low gross score during the 2016 season was Guest Member John Parsons with a gross score of 65.

The Khedive Shrine Golf Club membership made a $5,210 donation to the Khedive Transportation Fund this year. Also, during the 2016 season there were two organization groups, which have members playing with the Khedive Shrine Golf club that made separate donations to

Potentate Woody Brown, and his D ivan O fficers installed the 2017 G olf Club O fficers the Khedive Transportation Fund. The Law & Disorderly made a $1,000 donation and the Pungo Service Center made a $790.00 donation. We also have members in the club that make anonymous donations to the Transportation fund. We want to thank all those who help the Children who need our support.

The Khedive Shrine Golf Club at this time has 165 members on the roster and we are not adding any additional members until we find out who will be returning for 2017 season. We will take prospective membership applications for the 2017 season. This means you will be placed on a waiting list for membership openings.

Remember! Shriners will be selected first and then Guest members to fill any opening that become available.

Khedive Shrine Golf Club will be sending out new letters to all the current Shriners and Guest Members from last year, in January, 2017 for the upcoming golf season. If you have moved and we do not have your new address, you may not be getting any newsletter. You need to notify Clif Smith with your change of address information.

hedive Fall Ceremonial Open House was held on October 14th and 15th with the Swashbucklers providing the bar and the Legion of Honor provided the food along with the Drum and Bugle Corps. 1st Vice CDR Greg Gustafson presented a check for $4,000.00 to Potentate Woody Brown.

Participating in the parade on Saturday were PC Forrest Garland, PC R.G. Brown, SASA PC/PC Don Super, 1st Vice CDR Greg Gustafson, and SASA CDR/PC/Ill. Paul Pennybacker.

On November 3rd - 5th we attended the International Assocation Legion of Honor Arlington Wreath Laying Memorial. It was attended by IALOH Adjutant Emeritus/ MASA PC/PC Ron Lee and his Lady Helen, SASA CDR/PC/Ill. Paul Pennybacker, SASA Adj./PC/Ill. Pete Gordon, PC R.G. Brown, PC Jack Laursen, LN Herb Hurst and Lady Gail, and LN Kevin Wilkerson.

On November 30th LN Kevin Wilkerson retired from the US Coast Guard at the McArthur Memorial. It was attended

by SASA PC/PC Don Super, IALOH Adjutant Emeritus/MASA PC/PC Ron Lee, and PC Jack Laursen.

SASA PC/PC Don Super and his Lady Phyllis and PC Forrest Garland and his Lady Harriet attended the Khedive Oyster Bowl game at Old Dominion University on 26 November. Old Dominion University beat Florida International University 42-28.

On December 9th we held our Installation of Officer’s at Gus & George Spaghetti House. We had a good turn out of Nobles, Guest and their ladies. Our Officers elected and installed were Adjutant Kevin Wilkerson, Finance Officer SASA PC/PC Don Super, 1st Vice CDR David Conner, 2nd Vice CDR Harold A. Campbell, and CDR Greg Gustafson by Chief Rabban John Howe. Also in attendance were his Lady Valerie and Oriental Guide Oscar Obsuna. CDR Greg Gustafson daughters Merrissa and Jessicca Gustafson presented the CDR with his CDR’s Fez and medallion.

PC (2006) Antonio (Tony) Quezon passed away on December 10th 2016. The family received friends at a visitation on the 13th of December at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Home in Norfolk during which a Rosary and Chalice Service were conducted. A funeral Mass was held on December 14th at St. Pius X Catholic Church, followed by burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Military Honors, and a reception following at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

On December 15th the Khedive Stag party was attended by CDR Greg Gustafson, PC Forrest Garland, LN Herb Hurst, and LN John Glauner.

he Roadrunners are the single most important Club in Khedive Temple. We are the Nobles that make what Shrine stands for happen. Transporting our kids and parents to our hospitals is the single most important act we perform. Each Noble should attend a meeting and get involved in this. Taking a child to our hospital and seeing them get their first prosthetic or walk or see the smile on a parent when he realizes that their child can get the best care in the world is the best feeling one can have. Why do we do this? The pay, no the reward of a hug or a smile are what makes each Roadrunner proud to do this. I encourage each of you to join and become a part of the greatest Club in Khedive.

Noble Dunbar just completed his 50th trip with Gaby and her Mother. His reward was a smile and a hug. He received the greatest pay ever. Please congratulate Noble Dunbar on his accomplishment.

We sponsor a Khedive Hockey night and have a picnic to show our patients just how much they mean to us. First we offer congratulations to the new “Pote” Illustrious Sir John and the whole line. We at Tidewater Shrine Club are particularly happy and proud that we have one of our own club members in that line. Noble Mark Cook expressed a desire to be one of those that truly make a greater commitment and was elected as our Oriental Guide. I have to tell you having been on official families I feel the obligation the Divan members have. I know Mark is excited but I also think I have had the point driven home of how much you are going to be giving of yourself in these positions. We at Tidewater will be there to support you and know that Noble Mark will make us proud. Once again, congrats to you all.

Unfortunately, I did not get to a good brother and the Black Camel took him from us. Noble David Crockett was our Chaplain and he was as quick with a joke as he was with a prayer. His good humor has gotten us over some “contradictory” times and he will surely be missed. We gave him a good Masonic send off and I am sure he will be looking after us from Heaven.

I will not make this long as we have had a hectic holiday season and we need to calm down, but rest assured we look forward to seeing as many Nobles at our meetings and at the Temple as well as at different functions all the units and clubs put on. We will be at Nicks Steak House in Gloucester Point at the bottom of the bride on the third Thursday of every month. Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner and meeting at 7:00 p.m. Come and join our new Noble President, Bud Garner whenever you can. We welcome your company. he Provost Guard held their annual Christmas Party and Officer Installation December 9th. The Party was held at Virginia Wesleyan College and the evening was much enjoyed by all. Thanks to the Captain and his committee for a superb Social and meal. Captain Wesley King dismissed his committees and thanked everyone for all of their support last year. Thanks to my Lady for providing the decorations for the event.

Installed as Officers for 2017 were Captain Gwinn Dunbar Jr., 1st Lieutenant Bill Batten ,2nd Lieutenant Mike Phelps, Sergeant Mason Keeter and Secretary/ Treasurer Larry Hale. Installation was by Illustrious Woody Brown assisted by Assistant Rabban Mike Coffman.

Congratulations to Noble and Guard member Col. Gary Meyers for being selected as Provost member of the year for 2016.

We congratulate Illustrious Sir Woody Brown on the fine job last year and we look forward to a continued growth with Illustrious Sir John Howe and the newly elected Divan.

Congratulations to all the new officers in their clubs and units. Let’s all step up and make this year the success our Kids and Temple deserve. As we have all heard Temple membership is at an extreme low and it is up to us to attract new Nobles from our Blue Lodges.

Let’s make this year one of extraordinary growth.

reeting all from Surprising Suffolk, Suffolk Shrine Club has been busy this quarter. We have continued to work on our property. We have had numerous work days to improve the condition of our building.

We meet the 4th Wednesday every month, unless otherwise noted. Our meeting stats a 6:30 with a social and 7:00 PM Dinner. We welcome everybody out and hope you will make at least one visit in the coming year.

We welcome all Nobels and Masons.

We put a team in the Golf Classic and we did respectful. Sorry for the rest of the team having to pull all my dead weight. A good time was had by all.

We hosted a lunch after the Peanut Festival parade.

Thanks for coming out and making it a fun filled afternoon. We also supported the Oyster bowl with a few of our members going out and rooting for the Monarchs.

Its was a great event. We want to give a shout out to all the Organizers.

We also supported the Khedive Christmas party for the Kids. The Stag party was a huge success with quite a few of our members working on the Chef’s Committee.

Suffolk Shrine Club held its Christmas Party with our Ladies and guest. We were entertained by the Khedive Notes Band. The entertainment was wonderful and the food was great. Thanks to all that made it a success.

The club supported the Annual meeting and the Units and Clubs meeting.

Our Official visit with our new Divan was held January 25, 2017. This year we combined with Portsmouth Club for a Joint Visit. The meeting was well attended and a good time was had by all. We want to congratulate our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir John Howe. We look forward to working with the entire newly elected Divan and having a great year. The new OG Mark Cook was given a bucket to hold surprises for you at all upcoming events.

Lastly, we look forward to seeing everyone south of the Border at Elizabeth City Shrine Club Venison Feast on February 4th 2017.

ike everyone else the Hillbillies like to celebrate the end of a year and with it the prospect of an even better new year. It’s also a time for reflection, to look back on things done and perhaps things that need improvement.

More importantly, it’s a time to remember those loved and lost in the past year or even years, and we lost many a good brother and lady this past year. Keep in mind however, that no one is ever truly lost as long as we keep them in our hearts and minds.

For the Hillbillies, the Urbana Oyster Festival starts off with a unit get together Friday evening. I think we kept the folks at the Pilot House Motel up till the wee hours of the morning with singing and laughing. But a great time was had by all. If you were at the parade you know that we were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers.

The Oyster festival in Urbana is always a great time. Our next adventure was not associated with the Khedive

Hillbillies or Khedive Temple but supported by members of the Hillbillie unit wishing to participate and support the Hillbillie Clan from ACCA. It was enjoyable to be a part of and raise money for our hospitals at the same time.

With Christmas upon us it was time for Christmas party and officer installations. The Chesapeake Shrine Club hosted the Hillbillies and numerous other units and clubs for dinner and entertainment, a great evening for all. There was even some entertainment provided by the Khedive Swashbucklers singing the “The 12 Days of Christmas”. Ok, ok, maybe not singing exactly, but it was an enjoyable performance. Perhaps not ready for “Americas Got Talent” but at least the “Gong Show.” Well boys and girls that’s all for now. Wishing you and yours a safe and prosperous new year!

he Khedive Yacht Club held its annual Christmas party and Change of Watch on December 20, 2016 at the Virginia Beach Resort and Conference Center.

Last year was a very successful year under the leadership of Commodore Clyde Dixon. The club repeated the capture of the Burroughs and Evers awards emblematic of the outstanding Mid-Atlantic Shrine Yacht Club at its annual rendezvous in addition to the award for the best club of the year of the eight that make up mid Atlantic region of shrine yacht clubs.

Past Commodore Don Super welcomed the members and the guests. The newly elected officers were installed

by Illustrious Sir Dick Wright with recorder Wayne Kelly assisting. The following officers were installed: Clyde Dixon and Hugh Van Brimer ( joint Commodores); Fred Rudiger Vice Commodore; Ray Clyburn Secretary and Fleet Captain, and Ron Filer, Treasurer.

During the Ill. Sir Dick Wright’s remarks he mentioned that 34 years ago in 1982 he had the honor of installing Lou Larcombe Jr. as Commodore in this yacht club.

We look forward to the new year supporting our new Divan and dreaming of the coming cruising and the fellowship of fellow yacht club brothers and spouses.

reetings from the officers and Nobles of the Peninsula Shrine Club and may 2017 be the most successful and prosperous New Year for each and everyone. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate our newest Potentate, Ill. Sir John Howe and all the members of the Divan of Khedive Shrine on their recently elected positions.

The Peninsula Shrine Club and its Nobles look forward to working with and supporting the entire Divan this year, again, congratulations to all.

The Peninsula Shrine Club held its annual Christmas dinner on December 20, at the Fort Eustis Club. A social time with hors d oeuvres, etc. was held prior to a delicious dinner of prime rib or salmon, vegetable, beverages, salad, and dessert. Immediately after dinner, the newly elected officers of the Peninsula Shrine Club were installed . The installed PSC officers are as follows: President – Noble Bernie Martin , Vice President – Noble Van Wilson, Secretary – Noble Pete Eure, and Treasurer – Noble Joseph DeRyder. Following the installation of officers, door prizes were awarded. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.

For our upcoming stated meeting on January 30th, we will host the Divan for its official visit and we look forward to it. Their visit and comments will be our program.

Nobles, if you have a particular program that you know of or a subject that you would like discussed, please do not hesitate to let me know as I am working on a list of other

Also, if you have ideas for a fund raiser or just a fun event let one of your officers know. I do not have a date yet but a paper drive is forthcoming along with our annual fishing trip . Noble Jerry Whitlock is working on the details and you will be notified when the plans have been fully fleshed out.

Nobles, in closing I would just like to thank the members of the Peninsula Shrine Club for electing me your President but I nor the other officers can make this year a success without your help and support. Please come out to our stated meeting on the 5th Monday of this month.

We meet at Joe and Mima’s, on Route 17. social time: 5:45 – 6:30, dinner and meeting open at 6:30. Additionally I encourage each one of us to not only work hard this year for Khedive Shrine but also for our Blue Lodges. They, like us, need members and we should do everything in out power to grow our numbers not only in the Temple but also in our lodges as well. Remember from whence our membership comes.

The Color Guard continues to be a small but active unit and we are currently looking for new members. As the “Number One Unit” of the Khedive Shrine, we are the first unit to represent this great Temple in all parades. We provide our members with their uniform and our dues are currently only $25.00 a year! Fellow Nobles or our Masonic Brethren that would like some additional information please let us know. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM (doors open by 6:30 PM) in our meeting room at the Temple.

Active or former military members as well as nobles that can simply march/walk in count are more than welcomed!! The Swashbucklers arrrr off and skally waggin’ and looking forward to a great 2017. As the new victim (I mean Cap’n) I look forward to working with the Nobility and the newly elected Divan. Joining me on the ships bridge arrrr the following: 1st Mate Eric Farrer, his lovely sister Boatswains Mate Jack Farrer, Scribe P.C. Alan (Domingo del Black) Brown, and Quartermaster P.C. Grant (Domingo del Red) Smith.

We had a great 2016 under the leadership of P.C. Alan Brown. A record turnout at our 5th Ever Pig Pickin’ and we added a total of 7 new Mariners and 2 new Landlubbers (associate) members to our ranks! It will be tough to beat last year’s success but we arrrr already on our way as we have already pre-sold 150 Pig Pickin’ tickets and they haven’t even been printed yet!!

We had a fantastic time joining the Chesapeake Shrine Club at the joint Installation and Christmas party and looking forward to it again next year! I hope everyone in attendance enjoyed the musical stylings of the crew!! Although we haven’t received any recording deals yet, we found that we were able clean up our act enough to perform in a public setting so we’re currently taking reservations for weddings, birthday parties, and bar mitzvahs!

Our ship, the Bounty of Hope has been on dry-dock over the cold winter months getting ready for the upcoming

parade season and we arrr looking forward to sailing the high seas of Ocean View in the 50th annual St Patrick’s parade on March 18th.

This is the part where I think I’m supposed to say any new Nobles, anyone not in a Unit, or anyone thinking about affiliation, feel free to come visit……..but I want to try something different.

I’d like to invite any Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, Master Mason, or Noble to come visit with us during any monthly social hour and have some great fellowship Pirate style.

We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Uniformed Units wing at the Temple. Social @ 1800 and meeting at 1900……or 6 PM and 7 PM for you landlubbers.

reetings from the Virginia Beach Shrine Club. We are off to an exciting and eventual year. Our first effort will be to try and establish a comprehensive and accurate membership list for the club to include phone and email information. We hope, in that regard to be able to move our newsletter to electronic format(PDF). This will allow us to more frequently inform the nobles about our meeting agendas and upcoming activities. You will shortly be receiving a communication from the club Secretary asking you to provide the necessary information.

We will, this year, be reintroducing Past Presidents Night, Past Potentates Night, and a Blue Lodge appreciation night. These dates are yet to be determined but, with the advent of an updated, accurate membership list all nobles will be well informed.

I remain open to all comments and help from any noble and will be happy to discuss any issues relative to the club that you may wish to entertain. You may, to that effect, contact me at (757) 576-2012 or email at wbramsey1@aol. com. I will respond to all comments and suggestions.

Williamsburg Shrine Club Gary Palmer Greetings from the Northwest corner of Khedive territory! The Williamsburg Shrine Club extends its congratulations to Illustrious Sir John Howe on his election to Potentate for 2017, and to all the members of the Divan in their new positions. Our club extends sincere thanks to Past Potentate Woody Brown for his leadership during 2016 and for all the years he served on the Divan, and to Lady Terry for her support during Woody’s years of service. A special welcome to the Divan to Oriental Guide Mark Cook.

By the time this column is printed we will have had our Official visit and we’ll have feasted on peanuts !

2016 was a good year for our Club. Activities included two Spaghetti dinners, two paper drives, and our annual Golf Classic. The total funds raised and turned over to Khedive for the hospitals, transportation fund, and building fund was a bit over $13,000. Our goal is to beat that number in 2017.

During 2016 our membership grew considerably, and we welcomed 3 new nobles into our group. Welcome to Tom Lane, Vern Dockins, & Warren West.

December was our annual Christmas Party and Installation. Officiating was Assistant Rabban, Williamsburg’s own Mike Coffman. Mike administered the oath of office to Noble Jerry Frey - President, Noble Don Bartholomay - Vice President, and Noble Richard Stratton Treasurer, and to our incoming Board of Directors.

2016 was a fun year 2017 will be even better. If you can make it up to our neck of the woods all are welcome at our meetings. We meet the first Wednesday of the month (except August & December which are our Ladies Nights) at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Rd. Social hour starts at 6:00, dinner at 7:00. Take Rte #64 west to the Camp Peary exit and make a left, then a right at the 2nd light on to Rte #132 to By-Pass Rd. Make right on By-Pass to the Holiday Inn. Before signing off, the Williamsburg Shrine Club extends a sincere thank you to our Past President Tom Damon for his service and leadership during 2016.

s we advance our efforts for a prosperous new year our unit wishes to thank everyone who participated in the numerous events and worthy causes supported by the Khedive Temple. With Potentate John Howe “Charting Our Future” we highly recommend our new associates to socialize with our fraternal brothers and sisters and share in the numerous Khedive Temple’s Unit festivities during 2017.

Reflecting over some of the more eventful outings orchestrated under the watchful eye of Captain Gilbert C. Sawyer, our merry band of parading truckers participated in the Clam Slam in Cape Charles, The Lynnhaven Colony Estates Daylight Christmas Parade as well as The Virginia Beach Christmas Parade at the oceanfront on that same evening in December. Additionally our members caravanned to Middlesex County’s Christmas Parade. We were hosted by Nobel George “Terry” Putt and his lovely wife Nena prior to the parades step off. The Middlesex Christmas Parade was one of the most friendly and well organized excursions of the year. Afterwards Captain Sawyer treated our participating members and their families to an excellent lunch to celebrate the end of his

term as Unit Captain before turning over the reins of control to newly elected Captain Walter “Dink” Pope.

Our year has ended with the election of officers and the addition of three new members. We welcome aboard: Nobles Bob: Boss” Mills, William Bickel and Melvin Fortson.

We are all looking forward to attending the Potentates Ball on February 25th and kicking off the start of the parading adventures on March18th with the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Norfolk’s Ocean View. And a reminder: Our Gold Tournament will take place on May 22nd at the Greenbrier Golf Course in Chesapeake, Va. Please, if you are friends with another Master Mason, invite him to further enjoy Freemasonry by exploring the many functions at our Temple in Chesapeake, Va. Our order is in need of new members if we are to continue our efforts to support Shrine charitable activities.

As always we have space for a few new members to add to our fleet of truckers. We invite you to drop on by “The Truck Stop” meeting room. We gather together on the first Monday of each month at seven o’clock in the Chesapeake Khedive Shrine Temple.

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach.

Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws: §335.3 Use of Name “Shriners Hospitals For Children.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the chairman of the board of trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited. §503.11 Commercial Use of Name. The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the boards of directors and trustees has been first obtained.

Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: 1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations, shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof. (b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. (c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with §335.3 and §503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws and that there is no representation, expressed or implied, that would lead a reasonably prudent person to believe that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. If the potentate is in doubt, he must receive the opinion of the Imperial Potentate who, after consultation with the Director of Temple Accounting, shall make the final determination. (d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and, additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws. (e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International.

Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, shall be promptly mailed to him.

2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising

activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Permission therefor must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P. O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356. No charitable fundraising activity shall be held in the jurisdiction of another temple without the written permission of the potentate of that temple.

(1) A joint charitable fundraising activity with another 501(c)(3) charity may be authorized, provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity.

(2) A charitable fundraising activity conducted by a temple located outside of the U.S.A. may be authorized for other charities, provided that the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity. (b) All Shrine temples and their units, Shrine clubs, Shrine Associations and their units and Imperial Sessions of Shriners International are prohibited from engaging telemarketing firms and direct mail firms to assist with fundraising for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Any existing contracts may be completed, but not renewed. No new contracts are permitted without first obtaining written permission from the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees. (c) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fundraising—Approval And Reporting provisions of this General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of any General Order.

Provided, however, if the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution. The remaining net proceeds from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children and may not be designated or restricted in any way other than for research at one or all of our hospitals. (d) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundraising activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fundraising—Approval And Reporting provisions of any General Order.

1ST QTR 2017 (e) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of Shriners International. (f ) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees to raise moneys for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements reviewed pursuant to §§334.6 & 337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners International within 120 days of the activity.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure: (a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted material, regarding the use of the proceeds.

Examples: “Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Shriners) ( Shrine club) activities.”

“Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.” (b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on all solicitation material, including tickets, programs, documents and electronically transmitted material, that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.” (c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any general order by U.S. temples.

4. Compliance with Applicable Laws: It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.

5. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles and affiliated and appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records. (b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years. (c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds and Activities provision of any General Order.

6. Notification to Nobility: A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of this General Order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year.

7. Prior Permission: Every Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, temple, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations is prohibited from entering into any telemarketing agreement or contract to raise money for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children without first obtaining written permission from the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P. O. Box 31356, Tampa, Florida 33631-3356.

8. Discipline: Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.

When 17-year-old Abby Waldo looks back on her year in 2016, she recalls the summer being one that she will remember forever. She was able to do all the normal things that teenagers are supposed to do during a vacation from school. She was able to spend time with friends, be active and catch up on sleep. This quintessential summer may not have been possible without the care she received at Shriners Hospital for Children — Greenville.

“When I came to Greenville Shriners Hospital it was because my back had begun to hurt,” said Abby. “It came to a point where it was keeping me from sleeping and other normal parts of life were being affected.”

What was causing Abby’s pain in her back was scoliosis, a disorder in which the spine is curved in an abnormal manner. Noting the changes in her everyday life, she and her family came to the hospital for an appointment to discuss her treatment options. It was at that time that Abby decided she wanted to move forward with surgery.

In May, she received a spinal fusion to join together vertebrae in her back, and just three weeks after surgery she was already seeing improvements.

“I am already doing all the basic things I was worried I couldn’t do,” said Abby. “All of this is thanks to my doctors and nurses.”

For this vibrant teenager, Greenville Shriners Hospital not only gave her a chance to comfortably enjoy daily activities that most people take for granted, but also gave her inspiration for the future. With hopes of pursuing a career in medicine, Abby gained a better understanding of what the future can hold.

“This hospital is a place where children can come and receive care that is geared towards their needs as kids,” she said. “Because of that I started my recovery from surgery with a backbone of nurses and doctors that truly cared about me as a person. I will look back on my experience at Greenville Shriners Hospital and know that is the type of medical professional and person I want to be.”

Just months after her surgery, Abby was able to job shadow her physician, Cheif of Staff Dr. Michael Wattenbarger, further showing her that Greenville Shriners Hospital not only cares about physically treating a patient, but also cares about their future and development as a person.
