POTENTATE’S MESSAGE By Woody Brown

G

reeting Nobles, First, please let me thank each and everyone of you for the confidence you have shown in electing me as your Potentate of Khedive Shriners for the year 2016. I promise that I will do my absolute best in managing your Temple for 2016. Now, I would like to give Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal the praise he deserves for his leadership in 2015. Ill. Sir, your devotion to this Temple will be remembered forever. Lady Pat’s and your friendship means the world to Lady Terry and me. “WELL DONE” Illustrious Sir! I would also like to thank Illustrious Sir Charlie Lee for his 16 years as Recorder for this Temple. Ill. Sir Charlie and Lady Joan, you will be missed! This year I am taking a different approach in the Temple. My theme for 2016 is “Strength In Unity.” Nobles, I am not trying to take anything away for our mission of Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. That will always be our goal. However, I believe that we must take care of some issues now. That main issue is of course Membership. By reestablishing

our ties with the 62 Masonic Lodges in our Oasis, I believe that we can certainly attract new members to Khedive Shrine. These lodge members are our only resource pool. So, I am asking everyone to revisit your lodge; rekindle friendships, and make them aware of what Shrinedom is all about. If we all strive to do this, we will have “Strength In Unity.” My Lady Terry has a fundraiser this year. She has named it “Feed the Pig.” We will place piggy banks in the various Units And Clubs. All that she asks is for you just to drop your change in your pocket in these banks. All of the proceeds will benefit some renovations that are needed in the Temple. My congratulations to Noble Wayne Kelly and his Lady Cheryl Valeriano on his election as the Temple Recorder. I am looking forward to working with you both this year. Also, to Noble Bill Hoggard and his Lady Marion on his election as Oriental Guide. Both of you will be an asset to this Divan. And lastly, to the rest of the Divan and your Ladies on your advancement on this line.

In closing, I just want to say again, that this Divan works very hard to make this Temple succeed. And together we can have “Strength In Unity.” Yours in the Faith, Woody Brown Potentate 2016

Khedive Divan

CHIEF RABBAN By John Howe

F

irst, thank you for your support and confidence in advancing me to the office of Chief Rabban at the January business meeting. The time continues to fly by at an unbelievable speed. I’d like to reiterate a couple of points from a year ago. As the 2015 year closes

and we pay the final invoices, we change our focus to the current year. In order to repeat the success of 2015 efforts to provide a budget that has excess revenues over expenses we will have to meet our other revenue producing goals, mainly from fundraising (Rodeo & Seafood Fest) and building/property rentals. Question is, can we do that? Year-over-year, attendance at the Seafood Fest is down. Recent code changes for bleachers has resulted in some challenges this year that may increase the expense of the Rodeo, and subsequently reduce revenue. There is a need to improve the building so that we can offer a better facility that will provide more and better paying rentals. We need to examine these issues and find solutions. On another note, over Thanksgiving week, Val & I and Jimmy & Sandy Newby visited Kora Temple in Lewiston, Maine to look at the inner workings of a weeklong fundraiser that they do. Kora is approximately the same membership size as Khedive with the same age demographic,

so on the basis of worker availability it’s a match. Their net revenue from the event is in the neighborhood of a quarter million dollars each year. This was their 10th year and they’ve never lost money in any year. Later in the week Val & I visited Anah temple in Bangor, ME, again the same size as Khedive, and in their third year of the same fundraiser. This year they cleared a cool quarter million as well and haven’t ever lost money. We took a lot of notes and pictures. Sometime in the near future we’ll be presenting a brief to the Divan and others so that we can look at the possibility of doing the same or a similar effort at Khedive. Fundraisers like this do what I’ve been espousing for three years – they transfer the cost of operating and maintaining the Temple onto the public sector. More to follow on this… As always, please feel free to e-mail or call me. Yours in the Faith John Howe Chief Rabban

obles one and all, I want to thank each of you for electing me as your Recorder for 2016. I look forward to this new adventure in my life and I will do my best to make Khedive Temple better and succeed in 2016. I know with the help from all of you, Khedive can have a great year. Ill. Sir Woody has planned some great fundraisers and in order to make them profitable it will take all the Nobility to support them. Come on out and enjoy all the festivities and an active be part of your Temple. The Potentate’s Ball and Reception will be held on Saturday, February 27th. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend this great event. This is one you do not want to miss. Nobles please check your dues cards and make sure they are

current. Also, the Recorder’s office spends a lot of money sending out reminders on Rodeo Tickets, Seafood Tickets and Insurance (for Nobles who have parade insurance on their personal unit vehicles from the Temple), so please send your payments in as soon as they are due. I look forward to seeing each of you on the street at our first parade on March 19th (Saint Patrick’s Day). Nobles, in closing a reminder to all Units/ Clubs heads to turn in their 990 tax form as early as possible. Be sure to sign the form and give me a phone number in case I need to call with any questions. Should anyone have any questions, please give me a call or come by the office From Lady Cheryl, and I, we wish each of you a very Happy New Year. Fraternally, Wayne Kelly Recorder

O

n behalf of my Lady Violy and myself, I would like to thank all the Nobles for the continued support, encouragement and trust that you bestowed on us, allowing us to continue our journey as your High Priest and Prophet for 2016. We are so blessed to have such special people in our life and to be a part of this fine organization. Our congratulations to all the elected officers of every Unit and Club. Let us welcome our newly elected Potentate, Illustrious Woody Brown and Lady Terry. Let’s all come together and be a team to support their projects and make this year a successful one. This year I was assigned as your $100 Million Dollar Club Chairman. To be a member you can make a $100 dollar donation and receive a certificate and a tassel holder. You can also donate as a Unit like some of our Units and Clubs have done, and proudly display their certificate in their Unit room. Remember your donations goes to a good cause, our Shriners Children’s Hospital. Your blessings will multiply for what you do. Let me and Lady Violy be the first to support this endeavor this year. Please support this program and have your name or your Units name appear in the “High Noble” editions. Our utmost appreciation to Illustrious Elwood and Lady Pat for a memorable and exciting year. You will be missed. During Illustrious Elwood’s tenure, we started the “Go Getter Award” certificate for our first line signers, for recruiting new Nobles. Included with this program is a certificate and a pin from our Imperial Potentate. The continued support and hard work of

Khedive Units

DIRECTOR OF UNIFORMED UNITS By Al Kinchen

I

llustrious Sir, Illustrious Sirs, Members of the Divan, and Nobles All: First, I would like to congratulate Illustrious Sir Woody on his nomination to the office of Illustrious Potentate, evidence of his hard work and dedication to the Khedive Shrine Center. Secondly, congratulations to the Divan for their election and advancement in leadership for 2016. I look forward to serving with Illustrious Sir Woody and the Divan in making this an exciting and fun filled year for Khedive. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Woody for appointing me as Director of Uniformed Units for 2016. It is an honor to serve in this position once again. Mark Barham, Assistant Director, and I have a busy year ahead of us. We are working hard to encourage Khedive Units to attend as many functions as possible to provide needed visibility and recognition. The parade season begins with the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade at Ocean View on March 19th. A pre-parade breakfast will be hosted by Illustrious Sir Bill Kern. Refreshments will be served at the Knights of Columbus on Government Avenue after the parade. This parade is the first of many. Your participation in parades is vital. Whether a Shrine Mason is in uniform walking, riding cars, motorcycles, or floats, we have the opportunity to educate the public of the amazing work being done at the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. To the right is a list of 2016 Temple parades and events. For further updates, visit the Temple web site and mark your calendars. There are many events to enjoy this year; the Chesapeake Oyster Roast, Shrine Night with the Admirals, Khedive Rodeo and the Oyster Bowl, just to name a few. I will make sure you have the information you need as each event gets closer. Please mark your calendars now to reserve the dates. Participation is very important as when we socialize and share our experiences of the Mystic Shrine and Masonry at any event, it helps to educate the public on what we are all about. Remember to utilize the Temple web site. It is a valuable resource that provides a calendar of events, articles, procedure manuals, photos, fund raisers, and much more to keep us informed. Contact Anne to add information to the site. A welldeserved thank you to Anne for all her hard work diligently maintaining this valuable resource. I look forward to working with each and every Unit Head as we support our Temple through increased visibility. I will provide appropriate leadership to the best of my ability and look forward to enthusiastic participation throughout the year. Yours in Faith, Alton Kinchen - Director of Uniformed Units

Khedive Transportation

FROM THE DESK OF CLIFF ATKINSON By Chairman Khedive Transportation

F

or the third time in two months, we’ve had to tell a parent that we could not get drivers to take them to the hospital. When I reviewed our driver’s list, I found we have a number of “official family” member listed (on our list for insurance purposes) and a number of drivers who only make a trip once a year or so. Recently, we’ve had couple of our drivers who have taken trips at the drop

of a hat decide it was time to slow down. The number of drivers who actually want to make trips is now relatively small. We are in need of drivers who are in good physical condition willing to drive on short notice. If you would like to be a driver, please contact myself or Nancy in the Transportation Office. I always like to look at our recent past to see how we are doing now. Sometimes we can spot trends that are not readily apparent. Over the last five years, we have provided van transportation to 532 patients with 491 trips, an average of 98 trips per year. Where five years ago we only had to provide 10 commercial air trips to Cincinnati with 7 air wing trips, this year we had to provide 16 commercial trips with only 1 air wing trip. The difference is we now only have 2 volunteer pilots available where before we had 10 or 12. In 2015, we spent over $30,000 on commercial air trips. It could have been

worse if we hadn’t made 5 or 6 trips to Cincinnati by van. I also like to look at how we are spending our money versus how much we are receiving. Over the last five years, through your efforts, the Transportation Fund has received just over $699,000. During that same period, we have spent $671,730, or about $ 27,500 less than we received. However, if we look at only the past three years, the Transportation Fund has received only $8900 more than was spent. Is this a result of our dwindling membership? This past year, the Transportation Fund received $10,000 less than our three year average. My dilemma is where do I cut spending without affecting the safety of our drivers and patients. At least we currently have a Transportation Program that has been recognized as one of the best by our hospitals. Isn’t it great to be a “Khedive” Shriner!

PHILADELPHIA HOSPITAL REPORT By Lon Weber Member Board of Governors

T

he importance of the position of Recorder at each Shrine Center cannot be overstated and with this writing we bid a fond Khedive Shrine and Masonic farewell to Charlie Lee who has served us with distinction for more than a decade and a half. Charlie has been the fulcrum around which all action of benefit to our Shrine Center has moved. He possessed the knowledge and historical perspective that will be difficult to replace in the coming years as difficult decisions concerning our hospitals everywhere will present themselves, including our own at Philadelphia. Having said that, Noble Wayne Kelley who by unanimous vote at our Business Meeting January 9, is a person, Mason and Shriner who by his experience and dedication brings to the position of Recorder the necessary strengths to build upon the foundation and move forward with new vigor and enthusiasm So it is with sincere thanks and appreciation to Recorder Lee and a hardy welcome to Recorder Kelley that this entry on behalf of the Philadelphia Hospital is dedicated. If we are lucky there may be some Khedive Clowns and balloons there. Hold on to your hat the next event is the max daddy of them all the Chesapeake Shrine Oyster Roast on March 26th from 1:00 to 4:00. Folks this is the event where everyone gets to break out of that cabin fever blues and have a great time. Be there or be square. I could go on and on forever with good things happening and I would stop there but I will run through a couple of high lights in April. April 10th is the date of the Provost Barbeque. The following weekend on the 17th will be the Drum Corp. Fish Fry. Still want more fish? The Ladies Shrine well be holding their Annual Fish Fry on April 24th. reetings and Happy New Year from the Khedive Autos. We are a group of motor-heads/old car nuts. We don’t have to walk in parades, we ride in our old cars. We also work hard all year to put on our Annual Car and Craft show the third Saturday in August. 2015 was an extremely successful event with nearly 350 cars attending. 2016, being our 25th year is going to be even better. We had very successful and well attended Ladies Night and Christmas Parties this year. We are sponsoring a dance at the temple on March 12th for a Group named Simonsdale (page 40), the proceeds from which go directly to the Transportation Fund. Come on out!!

Our ladies are also very active supporting the Potentate’s lady’s charities. We meet at 7:00 pm with a social hour at 6:00 pm on the 2nd Monday of the month at the Temple. If you have an Antique, Classic, Custom, Street Rod or Rare or Limited edition car or just like cars and want to ride instead of walking, please consider joining THE AUTOS!

KHEDIVE BAND By Secretary Kevin Gilbert

W

e are pleased to report that Jeff Davis was re-elected as director of the Khedive Band and Buddy Creasy was appointed and accepted the position of assistant director. Kevin Gilbert was elected secretary and Rubin Kravitz was re-elected treasurer. We celebrated our 100th year as the Khedive Shrine Band and two nobles saw their 50th anniversary as Shriners, Granville White and George (Bud) Keen, 3rd. Congratulations to both of them for all they have done for Shriners International over the past 50 years. Also within the last year the concert band was transformed into a smaller combo group because the instrumentation makeup of the band significantly changed. The combo band is reminiscent of many club bands that performed in the 1960’s and 70’s playing jazzy versions of contemporary pop hits. The band plays a wide mix of tunes ranging from standards like “Stand by Me” to fun tunes like “Margaritaville” providing a range of numbers sure to spark fond memories and create new ones for audiences young and old. As the band enters its second century of providing quality entertainment for a good cause our goal is to spread good cheer through our performances throughout the Tidewater region. We are excited that the Band added four nobles in 2015 including, Kevin Gilbert and James Hollinden on trombone, Adam Haney and Jeff Haney on trumpet, all welcome additions to our brass section. We are excited to see how our band grew this past year. Members of the Brass Band played in two Christmas music performances in December. We entertained the residents at Westminster Canterbury and Atlantic Shores Retirement Community. Both groups indicated a grand time was had by all who were in attendance. The band participated in both MASA and SASA in September this year for the first time in a long time. Unfortunately, our parade effort was rained out for SASA but we did manage to entertain on the patio of the hotel for two evenings playing many upbeat contemporary numbers enjoyed by all. The band joined in with the Chesapeake Shrine Club attending the annual Christmas party. We had a grand time celebrating and installing our officers for 2016. Our “Spring Swing” dance will be held at the Khedive Temple on May 7th, 2016 featuring dance songs from our “Notables”

Big Band. Doors open at 7:30 with music from 8-10 PM. Horsd'oeuvres and drinks will be provided. It’s BYOB and admission is $15.00 per person or $25.00 for couples. Lace up your dancing shoes and come join us for a fun evening of dancing and music. If you have played an instrument in the past or just want to be a part of a growing unit, we are always looking for new members. We need a full time driver for the parades and can always use help with equipment and other things. We rehearse at the Shrine Activities Building Tuesday evenings. For more information, please give me a call at (757) 339-1986 or Jeff Davis at (757) 831-1635. Kevin Gilbert Secretary Khedive Band

reetings from everyone’s favorite unit the Khedive Clowns. First off I would be remiss if I did not give a honk of a Clown nose to all of the Clowns who came out and supported the Christmas Party. Y’all sure can light up a room. Thanks. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is our units first big test. And we are chomping at the bit to get at it. Come on guys let’s show Norfolk what Clowning is all about. The very next day on March 20th we have the Children’s Easter Egg hunt which is always a fun time. Folks the Clowns are always looking for smiling faces. So if you want to see what it is like to look into a child’s eyes and make them smile or laugh out loud this is the unit for. I have been there and I have done that and there is no better feeling in the world. We have people that can help you learn the art of make-up and even help you make up that first time. Last but certainty not least we have the world renowned “Clown barbeque.” Often imitated but never duplicated as the saying goes. Give Harry Tew AKA “BoBo” a call and he will hook you up. Or if you just want to drop by the Temple then look up our go to guy, Leroy Lane, knows where the secret stash is. Hope to see you on the streets. Keep Smiling, Joe Ramsey AKA Jingles

irst we want to extend our congratulations to our new Potentate, Illustrious Woody Brown and all elected and appointed officers. We will do our best to help in making this a year to remember! We would also like to thank Charlie Lee for all the assistance he has given us over the past several years as Recorder. Charlie has always been there for us when we needed some advice or just a little friendship. If there is ever anything we the Corvettes can do for you please let us know. We are excited to start 2016 and are starting off the new year with a new member. We welcome Noble William (Trey) Phelps to our unit and we look forward to having him participate with us and help us grow. We are getting our cars in order and will be ready for the St. Patrick's Day Parade! We are still in need of members and have cars available so anyone interested in our unit please give myself or any other member a call and we can set it up so you can come out and try

one of these little cars out. If you have never driven one of these little cars trust me you will love it and there is nothing more wonderful than seeing the faces of the children, young of older, when they see you go by in one of these cars. You are more than welcome to come out to our meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 PM in our meeting room at the Temple. Come on by and say hello! CHESAPEAKE SHRINE CLUB By Secretary Joe Ramsey

W

ell it’s 2016 and I guess it is time to start from scratch again. Before we do all of us at the Club would like to give Past President Wayne Sherman a big “high five.” What a great year he had. The sad part is that a lot of ya’ll missed it by not showing up. We had a great Oyster Roast; we had boat trips, magicians, hearty meals shucks I could go on and on. The best part about it was that Wayne was right in the middle of it all getting his hands dirty. Now don’t you run off Wayne we need you now more than ever and hell we could use a bunch more or you if you know where we can find them. Okay that is enough of my man crush. What??? Great job “Chowda” no kidding. Next up let’s talk about the Oyster Roast. First off I cannot express how happy we are around the Club now that Eddie Hodges, Chairman Emeritus, is on the mends. It would not be a Roast without him giving us his world famous battle cry “Sell Tickets.” Now back to business the Oyster Roast is March 26th from 1:00 to 4:00. Club members should be receiving their tickets shortly. If you need more tickets we have plenty. PP Charlie Taylor already has us scheduled to be on the “Hampton Roads Show” March 24th. Nobles, being on the show is a great time to get together with friends and have fun. After the show there may be a breakfast on the horizon. If you are planning on working the event please

make sure you have signed up with your committee chairperson to get your name on the entry list. Let’s see if we can top 3,000 people through the gate again. Our April meeting will be our workers party, come on out and pat each other on the back and talk about another job well done. Our monthly meeting in May will be Ladies Night. President Dave has tentatively scheduled a trip on the American Rover out of Waterside normally going out on a Sunday. Nobles there will be a cutoff date for reservations and payment if we don’t have enough people we aren’t going simple as that. I will say it is a great time of as they say, “food, fun and fellowship.” I am planning on taking deposits well in advance so keep your ear to the ground. I am on a roll and I go on forever but my mouth is getting dry so it is time to wrap things up. In closing I would like everyone to take a second and say a pray for all the sick and afflicted in our group. Illustrious Sir Buddy Curran and Illustrious Sir Bob Foxwell come to mind right away please. Prayer does work and unfortunately we have quite a number among us who could use it right now. Nobles if you have an idea for theme for one of our meetings or a guest speaker we may be interested in hearing please let one of the Officers or Board members know and we will see what we can do.

Top Photo Left: Incoming 2016 Chesapeake Shrine Club President Dave McClellan with Wayne Sherman 2015 President Photo Bottom: CSC 2016 Officers

Also anyone who wants to become more active please contact me we truly want to see some new smiling faces and the Chesapeake Shrine Club is the best place to do it. Right off the bat I will tell you we need hors d’oeuvre preparers for our monthly meetings. What a great way to meet the guys. Remember your Lodge needs Masons and your Temple needs candidates. Chesapeake Shrine Club 3rd Monday of the month doors open at 6:00 and dinner is severed at 7:00. “We’ll leave the light on for ya.” Until Next Time - Regards, Joe Ramsey

reetings and Happy New Year from the Khedive Motor Patrol. I was honored to be installed as Captain of the Motor Patrol by my father in law Illustrious Sir Charlie Taylor, P.P. at our December meeting. Also installed were Noble Eric Williams 1st Lieutenant, Noble Jim Allen 2nd Lieutenant, Noble PC Steve McGowan Secretary and Noble PC Phil Williams as Treasurer. The Motor Patrol would like to congratulate Illustrious Sir Woody Brown and his Divan on their recent elections and offer our support for 2016. On December 13th 2015 the Motor Patrol participated in a Christmas Parade in Chester VA, with the ACCA Shrine Motor Patrol. It was a fun parade and a joy to see all those White Harleys together on the street. It was a real crowd pleaser. The ACCA Motor Patrol is planning to join us for the St. Patrick’s day parade in March. The Patrol is making preparations to compete at the

International level in 2017 at the Imperial session in Daytona Beach Florida. We will be representing Khedive Shrine Center, and supporting our member Howard Helwig who will be President of the International Association of Shrine Motor Corps. We look forward to putting on a good show and to bring home a few trophies. The Motor Patrol meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in our unit room. She also stepped up to the plate in support of Past Director

KNIGHTS OF MECCA By Secretary/Treasurer Ed Meise

W

e wanted to try something different in 2015 with regard to our Annual Installation of officers for 2016. We asked Chesapeake Shrine Club and Brother Joe Ramsey if the Knights of Mecca could be included along with other Units in its Annual Installation of Officers. He agreed and our officers in the group were installed.

reetings from The Khedive Shrine Golf Club, hope that all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Year. The 2015 Khedive Shrine Golf Club season ended on November 17 and this year the weather was very exceptional to us, with almost no rain outs and allowing us to get our 36 scheduled outings in. We did have one outing (Greenbrier C.C) that we started and got as many as 14 holes played before the rains came and stopped us from finishing. We had our last outing for the season at the Ocean View Golf Course where we had lunch, announcement of the club winners and prizes being given for the six different flights, plus announcing the Club Champion for 2015. The Club Championship this year went to two of our members, because they were tied with same net scores. Bruce Lowery and Phil Hopkins were tied with a low net score of 67 each (include handicaps) for the two round of golf that were required

HI-NOBLE

The officers of the Knights of Mecca for 2016 are Edwardo I. Cantada, Past Master of Churchland 276, as President, John F. Skinner Jr., Past Master of Portsmouth 100, as Vice President, and Edward Meise, Past Master of Lynnhaven 220, as Secretary/Treasurer. Our Board of Directors are Edward Usita, Woody Brown, Ronnie Shank, and Stormy Thorson, all Past Masters. We pledge our support to Illustrious Woody Brown, Potentate of Khedive Shrine for 2016, and wish him well for a successful year.

to be played. The low Gross Score during the season was won by Freedie Veraque with a 66. During this last outing we had one of our guest members, Dave Paul get a Hole-In-One on the number four hole. Dave is 87 years young and shot an 82 for his round and got a Hole-In-One for the closest to the pin for that hole. So there it is still hope for some of us getting a HoleIn-One. After the presentation of the winners and prizes, the Illustrious Potentate Elwood Paschal installed the New Officers of the Khedive Shrine Golf Club for the 2016 season. The newly elected Officers of the Khedive Shrine Golf Club are: President, Bill Hoggard; Vice President, J.W. Wilson; Secretary/ Treasurer, Clif Smith; Chaplin, Ben Scofield (Appointed); Director of Activities, Johnnie Chandler Jr.; and Board Member, Past President Parker McDaniel. As per last year, most of the members that won a prize donated their winnings back to the Club, approximately $900 dollars. During this 2015 golf season, the Khedive Shrine Golf Club with its Shrine and Guest Members with their donations each week, plus with their donated winnings back to the club, the Khedive Shrine Golf Club was able to make a donation of $ 8,500 to the Khedive Transportation Fund, after all bills were paid. We also have members of the Golf Club who own businesses or belong to an organization that during the 2015 season made separate donations to the Khedive

Shrine Transportation Fund. The Law and Disorderly made a $1,000 donation and the Pungo Service Center made a $451.00 donation, as well as several individual members of the Golf Club that make personal donations. Khedive’s Potentate and the Temple wants to give a Big Thanks to all its members (Shriners and Guest Members), the different organizations and businesses for supporting and making donations to the Khedive Shrine Transportation Fund supporting the 22 Shriner Hospitals for Children. News Letters and applications for the 2016 season will be sent out around the first of February, 2016. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club will be taking existing Shriner’s and Guest applications from the 2015 membership list first for the 2016 season and then we will be taking prospective membership applications for the 2016 golf season starting in February. Note: New Members: Shriners will be selected first and then guest members will be selected to fill opening for membership that become available. Note: Duffer’s Dictionary of Practice Tee. Mysterious place found on most golf courses where for some unknown reason players who are incapable of hitting 97 shots in under 5 hours can easily hit 100 balls in less than 10 minute. TIDEWATER SHRINE CLUB By Treasurer Scott Traner

H

ello my fellow Nobles, this is hoping you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and are ready for another great year of taking care of our kids. I want to congratulate our new “Pote” and his Divan and wish him and them great success in this coming year. I also want to congratulate all new Units and Clubs officers for they play just as important a role in our endeavors for 2016. Have to brag a little about our Tidewater Shrine Club as we had a great plaque and other programs this year and gave over 12,000.00 to the Temple. I do want to talk about one special thing I have been fortunate enough to do. I get to be the “Santa” for the Temple (photo top). This has been the third year I have done this labor of love. Over the years all the patients gain a place in our hearts and Santa is no exception to the rule. I want

to talk about one such patient this year. I believe she might have been the first child to sit on Santas lap three years ago. Allison gave Santa a present (a Santa pin) before asking for anything for herself. I keep that pin on the dash board of my sleigh. She was born with problems with her legs and arms. That first year she was so beautiful I did not even notice the problems with her legs and almost tipped her over when I sat her down which did not phase her at all as she just rolled on. The second year she gave Santa a note written on a napkin that she had done with her feet. This also became a jewel for Santa and is on the wall in a frame at the North Pole. Both of these presents meant the world to me but this year she gave Santa the best present I have ever received. She called my name and when I looked over, with the help of her father, she was walking. I cannot begin to explain the joy this put into my heart

and my wish is for every Noble to feel this. Nobles come out to the kids parties or activities and get involved directly with them. The rewards to your hearts can never be measured or duplicated. This is what we do. I love being a Shriner, I love to help our kids and I want for all my brothers to have their hearts filled with the love I feel when we help ”OUR KIDS.” Enough for now, come on out and visit us the third Thursday of the month at Nicks restaurant at the bottom of the Coleman bridge in Gloucester. Social hour @6:00 pm and dinner at 7. Happy New Year brothers and always remember “Aint it Grand to be a Shriner.”

appy New Year and good health in the coming year to everyone from the Peninsula Shrine Club. On behalf of the Peninsula Shrine Club, I would like to congratulate Illustrious Sir Woody Brown for being elected Potentate of Khedive Shrine for 2016. Also congratulations to the 2016 Divan, especially our own Chief Rabban John Howe. The Nobles of the Peninsula Shrine Club look forward to working with and supporting Illustrious Brown and the Divan, assuring a very successful year. We will welcome Illustrious Brown at our February meeting. And to our new Oriental Guide Bill Hoggard... stock up on peanuts, M&Ms and chocolate raisins. Many thanks for a job well done to Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal for serving as our Potentate for 2015. The Peninsula Shrine thanks you for your leadership and the great success you had during your year as Potentate. I would also like to thank Noble Arthur Gandy for his hard work and distinguished service as President of the Peninsula Shrine Club in 2015. Arthur is a good friend and trusted brother, I wish him continued success.

I AM WORKING WITH KHEDIVE TO HAVE A FAMILY SPEAK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE AT OUR HOSPITALS. PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING AND BRING YOUR LADY.

The Peninsula Shrine Club held its annual Christmas dinner December 14, at Artie and Tony Steak House in Newport News. The attendance of our Ladies made it a very festive and special night. Also in attendance were Assistant Rabban John Howe and his Lady Valerie, along with High Priest & Prophet Mike Coffman and his Lady Susan. After enjoying an interactive social time, a delicious dinner, along with the dispensing of an abundance of door prices to lucky winners, the newly elected officers for both the Peninsula Shrine Club and Beach Bum Brother Unit were installed. The 2016 officers for the Peninsula Shrine Club are: President, Noble Bruce Edwards; Secretary, Noble Pete Eure; and Treasurer, Noble Van Wilson. Unfortunately at this time, the Club does not have a Vice President. The 2016 officers of the Beach Bum Brothers Unit are: Noble Richard Rawls, Captain; Noble Arthur Gandy, 1st Lieutenant; and Noble Bruce Edwards, Secretary/Treasurer. Our first meeting of the New Year will be January 25th. We are fortunate to have Noble Jerry Burks of Burks Accounting Bookkeeping and Tax Services as our guest speaker. Jerry will be speaking on the changes to the 2015 tax regulations. We will also be electing our board of directors at the January meeting. For our February meeting we will host the Divan for its official visit. Their visit and comments will be our February program. April will be Ladies Night. I am working with Khedive to have a family speak about their experience at our hospitals. Please plan on attending and bring your Lady. This is an excellent opportunity

HI-NOBLE

to show our Ladies what the Shrine is all about. Nobles, it is important to have interesting and fun meetings. If you have a particular program that you know of, or a subject that you would like discussed, please do not hesitate to let me known. This is our club and your opinions and interest matter. Fund raisers are always front and center for making our club a success. If you have ideas for a fund raiser, or just a fun event, please let me know your ideas. I do not have a firm date yet but we will be having our Vidalia Onion sale again this year probably around the end of April. I will try to coordinate this with a Paper Drive that will help with the onion sales. Our fishing trip has always been a fun event for our Nobles and their families. Unfortunately the fishing boat company has relocated to the south side. However we will continue to pursue this event in 2016. Shrine Plaque sales are another opportunity for our club to raise money for Shriner Hospitals. As we begin the new year please consider renewing your plaque for 2016 or becoming a first time plaque owner. Plaque sales are not limited to Shrine members. Please consider approaching a friend or business owner about purchasing a tax deductible Shriner Hospital plaque. The cost is $100 each. As a Past Master I know and appreciate the importance of the Blue Lodge. The Blue Lodges are the roots and trunk of the Masonic tree that feeds all the branches of our appendant bodies. The Blue Lodges, like us need members, and we should do everything in our power to grow our numbers not only in our Lodges, but also in the Temple as well. Remember from whence our membership comes. When you visit your Blue Lodge spread the word about our 22 Shrine Hospitals and the good work we do to support the hospitals where “all care and services are provided regardless of the families ability to pay.” Nobles, in closing I want to enlist the help of every Noble in making this a successful year for the Peninsula Shrine Club. Please support our fund raising activities. For those who we have not seen for a while, our stated meetings are on the 4th Monday of each month. We meet at Artie and Toni's (Steve's) Steakhouse, 11847 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, social time: 5:45 – 6:30; dinner meeting at 6:30. Come on out, have fun, and enjoy the camaraderie of new and old friends. “Together Brethen” Bruce Edwards - 757-868-8220 - ble822@gmail.com

reetings from the Northwest corner of Khedive territory! The Williamsburg Shrine Club extends its congratulations to Illustrious Sir Woody Brown on his election to Potentate for 2016, and to all the members of the Divan in their new positions. A special welcome to Bill Hoggard on his election as Oriental Guide. We look forward to the Official visit in February, we can taste the Peanuts already! Congratulations go to Wayne Kelly, our new Recorder. Our club extends sincere thanks to Past Potentate Elwood Paschal for his leadership during 2015 and for all the years he served on the Divan, and to Lady Pat for her support during Elwood’s years of service. We also extend our sincere thanks to Illustrious Charlie Lee, Recorder Emeritius for his many years of service as Recorder.

2015 was a good year for our Club. Activities included two Spaghetti dinners, two paper drives, and our annual Golf Classic. The total funds raised and turned over to Khedive for the hospitals, transportation fund, and building fund was over $13,000. Our goal is to beat that number in 2016. During 2015 our membership grew considerably. We welcomed 5 new Nobles into our fold: Welcome to Warren West, Larry Spore, Tom Lane, Bud Barnett, & Jim Yates. On December 2, 2015 we held our annual Christmas Party and Installation. Officiating our installation was High Priest & Prophet, Williamsburg’s own Mike Coffman. Mike administered the oath of office to Noble Tom Damon - President, Noble Gerry Frey - Vice President, and

33

Noble Richard Stratton - Treasurer, and to our incoming Board of Directors. On a side note, this is Richard’s 25th year as Treasurer – Thank You Richard !! 2015 was a fun year in Williamsburg and 2016 will be even better. If you can make it up to our neck of the woods all are welcome at our meetings. We meet the first Wednesday of the month (except August & December which are our Ladies Nights) at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Rd. Social hour starts at 6:00, dinner at 7:00. Take Rte #64 west to the Camp Peary exit and make a left, then a right at the 2nd light on to Rte #132 to By-Pass Rd. Make right on By-Pass to the Holiday Inn. Before signing off, the Williamsburg Shrine Club extends a sincere thank you to Noble Tom Lasher for the many years he devoted to this column. Be assured we’re not going to let Tom sit idle, after a well-deserved rest (30 days should be enough), we’ll find him a new challenge. Fraternally, Gary Palmer

reetings, I hope you had a festive and enjoyable Christmas and New Year celebration. Most certainly it is a very busy time of year for all of us. As we move in into 2016 there’s plenty more to do and the Virginia Beach Shrine Club is right in the mix. On Friday, January 8, 2016, we held our annual Memorial Service honoring

our departed brethren. This date also marks the final time the Virginia Beach Shrine Club will meet at the FOP Club on Birdneck Road. We have all lived through it and if time has taught us anything it’s that change is inevitable. The first time my parents saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show they were certain we were doomed. Where’s Guy Lombardo, Mitch Miller and Lawrence Welk? Well, they didn’t turn into the Grateful Dead or Rolling Stones, they went the way of the dinosaur and so will we if we don’t evolve and evolve we shall! Welcome to the new home of the

Virginia Beach Shrine Club. Our new location is the Virginia Beach National Golf Club “Black Angus Restaurant” 2500 Tournament Drive, Virginia Beach. Our first meeting at this location will be Friday, February 5, 2016, at 6:00 PM for the Potentates official visit. This would not have transpired without the assistance of our very own Mike and Chris Savvides. Thank you for your assistance and continued support of our club. The Virginia Beach Shrine Club is looking to fill the secretary’s office. If you or someone you know is interested in this position, contact any club officer or nominating chairman Bill Keating. YACHT CLUB By Past Commodore Ron Filer

T

he Yacht Club cast off on June 4th for a land cruise to Union, West Virginia to participate in the annual Farmers Day Parade on June 6th. The Yacht Club "Snappy" and "blue boat" we're towed up for the Parade. The weather was perfect for a parade and we had the honor of having our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal, and our Chief Rabban, Woody Brown, riding in the "blue boat" with Past Illustrious Sir Dick Wight riding shotgun in the tow vehicle. Past Illustrious Sir Jim Canterbury, our Past Commodore, captained "Snappy" (see photo right). Past Commodore Ray Clyburn was captain of the "blue boat" and Past Commodore Ron Filer was skipper of the tow vehicle. In addition to the Yacht Club, the Potentate's personal aid, Paul Beck and several other Khedive Units traveled to Union, West Virginia for the Parade, including Motor Corps and Motor Patrol. "Khedive Shrine Center was well represented!" Khedive Nobles and their ladies were treated to dinner the night before the Parade by the Greenbrier Shrine Club, and lunch after the Parade was provided by the Monroe Masonic Lodge. Everyone in Union welcomed Khedive Nobles and their ladies and stood ready to assist in every way possible. The fellowship and the friendship extended was unparalleled making for an outstanding weekend. The Yacht Club has been very active this summer. We have had great cruising including traveling by boat and land cruisers, to honor our Potentate Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal and Lady Pat to Smithfield Station on the Pagan River. While the weather threatened it did not disrupt any scheduled activities. As a result, everyone enjoyed themselves and had a chance to relax to also enjoy the Shrine fellowship, good food at the hospitalities and Smithfield Station. After the Potentate's Cruise, preparations began for the annual MAASYC rendezvous at Great Oaks in Chestertown, MD. The Yacht Club was represented by four boats, who made the very long cruise, and several land yachts. The Yacht Club did extremely well in the competitions as evidenced by the following awards: BOAT PARADE.... First Place, Don Super, P.C., Third Place, Jim Canterbury, P.P., P.C.; BOAT DECORATIONS..... First Place, Jim Canterbury, P.P., P.C., Second Place, Travis Twiford, P.C., Third Place, Don Super, P.C. The Yacht Club also won the Burros Trophy and Ever's Trophy for the sixth straight year. These Trophies are for the best yacht club at the MAASYC Rendezvous and for the most points accumulated during the year for competition awards, attendance at Commodore's Balls, MAASYC meetings, etc. These Trophies are the top two awards in MAASYC. The Yacht Club participated in the MASA parade at Virginia Beach and won First Place for Division 1, Yacht Club Float. Needless to say our trophy case is overflowing. The Yacht Club's final cruise was down the Intercoastal Waterway to the Albermarle Sound for the "Albermarle Loop.“ The first half of a scheduled 8 day cruise was great weatherwise;

however, the weather seriously deteriorated on day 5 resulting in cancellation of the last half of the cruise. Sometimes Mother Nature can change conditions rather quickly and you must adjust to accommodate, but the fellowship was still great. The Yacht Club is a family oriented club who enjoy boating, good fellowship, and spreading the word and purpose of the Shrine and the hospitals they provide. Membership in the Yacht Club is available to all Shriners, whether you own a boat or not. Just contact any member for an application and join us on our cruises by boat or land yacht. The fellowship is outstanding!
