here did the summer go? Cooler weather – fall activities – pumpkins – turkeys – parades – holiday plans - WOW! Before I get into anything else, I need to let you know that Lady Pat and I are battling breast cancer. She had surgery in September, but will have more sometime in October. That plus some radiation treatments will hopefully bring this terrifying journey to a pause if not an end. Thank each of you for your calls, your thoughts and your prayers. Your friendship goes a long way lifting spirits and keeping us going. There are two things I want to share with you. The first is a thank you note sent out to all shrine nobility by Ed Stolze who was elected to the Imperial line in Houston this summer. He is so ‘right on’ with his comments, I feel it best to share it word by word. As I’ve just returned from the 141st

Imperial Session in Houston, Texas, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you’ve given me over the last 18 months, and for the humbling honor you gave me to serve you on your Imperial Divan. Thank you for the hospitality you showed myself and my family, you really made us feel great. As I stated in my last correspondence, this has been the journey of a lifetime, and I’ve had the amazing opportunity to meet so many great people. I look forward to meeting many more. The journey continues. I did not do this alone, and will never forget that. It took a team effort, and I’m so grateful for everyone’s assistance. I’ve listened to your concerns and shared ideas with you and I’m confident that “together” we can make a difference. Together we can move membership forward; Together we can raise awareness of both the Fraternity and our Hospitals. Together we can raise the value of being a member so we can keep and challenge existing members, and we can attract new members. It’s so important that we work hard “together”. No Man Stands Alone. Thank you so much for having faith in me, I truly am humbled to serve you. Yours in the Faith, Imperial Sir Ed Stolze Imperial Outer Guard I thought this very impressive – worth sharing with you! He will serve Shrinedom very well. The second thing is something I read some years back – written by Albert Pike 33. I get it out every now and then to remind me of my Masonic principals. BROTHERHOOD - There can be no genuine brotherhood without mutual regard, good opinion and esteem, mutual charity, and mutual allowance for faults and failings. It is those who learn habitually to think better of each other, to look habitually for the good that is in each other, and expect, allow for, and overlook the evil, who can be Brethren, one of the other, in any true sense of the word. I think each of us – myself included - need to take this in to account when dealing with each other. I look forward to seeing each of you

at the Fall Business Meeting on November 19th, the Fall Ceremonial Open House on November 20th, and a Ladies’ Breakfast, the Fall Ceremonial and Unformed Units Party on November 21st. We will be honoring Noble Kenny Askew and Lady Debbie. Kenny - a major part of the Rodeo each year along with Joe Ramsey – arranges all of the actual Rodeo activities. Come out and help us honor him and Lady Debbie. Oyster Bowl is November 28th - yes, that’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We do not choose the date – ODU is in control! I hope we have a great showing at the game. Tickets are available from any Divan member or Anne in the front office. Your Divan continues to work on a long term plan. We seem – at times – to get sidelined with immediate needs – some larger than others – but we are trying to stay on task. It’s not an easy job. Khedive really did shine during MASA and SASA. I heard so many comments about the Khedive hospitality being second to none. Coming to a close, I want to thank each of you for your support this year. After three years of anticipation, this year has flown by all too quickly. Being Potentate has afforded Lady Pat and I the opportunity to go so many places and meet so many incredible people. It has been more than she or I ever imagined. I hope I am living up to my goal of leaving Khedive better than I found it. I need to thank the Divan for their support and friendship – they are a great group and will do a great job serving Khedive Temple in the coming years. Our Official Family, the Committee Chairmen and the Units & Clubs who have helped out throughout this year are unsurpassed. I thank each of you for your support throughout the year – Khedive Nobles and Ladies are a wonderful group of people. Thank you – thank you – thank you! As always, if you have any comments, complaints and/or suggestions, please contact me or any Divan member. This is YOUR temple! his year is quickly coming to an end and it will be time for the Christmas Parades and annual Christmas parties and installations. I hope the Officers of all the Units and Clubs have accomplished all they had planned for the year of 2015. A word for the incoming Captains, Directors and Presidents as well as the Secretaries and Treasurers, you all have a responsibility as a leader of your Club/Unit. reetings Nobles!!!! Wow, it has been a fast and very busy summer. I hope you all have survived the very hot summer and now ready to gear up for the holidays. In July, your Divan travelled to Houston, Texas for the Annual Imperial Session. Ill. Sir Jerry Gantt was elected

To all Unit/Club leaders, please send the Recorder a copy of all new Officers for 2016 as soon as possible after your Election/Installation. I will mail or put in mail slots in Unit rooms for each Unit/Club Captain/President a form called ”Reports of Shrine Clubs and Temple Units Financial Statements,” better known as 990 forms. Please complete ASAP and mail it back to and installed as Shriner’s International Imperial Potentate. Let’s all give Imp. Sir Jerry our full support. Also at this session, the Imperial per capita was increased by $15.00. This makes everyone’s per capita $30.00 to the fraternal side, and $5.00 to Shriner’s Hospitals. We have notified all that a one -time payment of $450.00 before December 31, 2015 will make you exempt from paying per capita again for life. This is an entirely voluntary program. If interested, contact the Temple or check out the website. In August, we had our Annual Seafood Fest. It was another success. Many thanks to all that helped, and especially to Noble Joe Ramsey and his crew for another outstanding job!!! Many, many thanks to all who attended and participated in the Fall Session of MASA and SASA. Our Temple received six trophies at each of these events. Although rain put a little damper on the SASA parade, Khedive still braved the elements and shined. Again, Congratulations to all that made these events successful. Nobles, remember we have our Fall

me with the supporting documentation that is asked for on back of the form. The requiremnt is mandatory. This is your input for the year 2015 taxes we have each year for the IRS. Noble, now is the time to start planning for the Imperial Council/ MASA/SASA/ Conventions. Deadline for the Imperial Council is February 2016. That means that 1st night deposit has to be paid by then. However your room binder fee (non-refundable) has to be paid now to reserve a room ($20.00). Form at @ http://khediveshrine.org/ ImperialDeposit.pdf From all the personnel in the Recorder’s Office to all Nobility of Khedive Temple, we wish each of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Don’t forget the Annual Business Meeting on January 9, 2016 at 9:30 AM. Fraternally, Charles E. Lee, P.P. Recorder

Ceremonial in November. Please do all that you can to recruit more members for our Temple. As we approach this year’s holiday season, let us all give thanks for what we have and remember others during this time. Remember our Business Meeting and Election of Officers on January 9, 2016. Come out and support your Temple. A 2016 Temple dues card is required for admittance. My Lady Terry and I would like to thank you all for your support this year. reetings Nobles, summer is gone and fall is upon us, it’s good to see the traffic around the bridge-tunnels at its “normal” level. The cooler weather is most welcome as well. As many of you know, I try to write something in each Hi-Noble that is of interest to all of the Khedive membership. Many of you have told me that you like this, so I’ll continue to do so. For this issue, I’d like to address two things: First, if you haven’t done so already, please read my article in the last issue of the Hi-Noble. There’s very important information there that pertains to the Imperial per capita increase and how to avoid paying in later years. Secondly, I’d like to address demits and suspensions, and will do so in reverse order. The Imperial Shrine by-laws require that a Noble pay his dues in advance, and that he be current in his dues for the ensuing year before a dues card can be issued to him. That means, for example, that a Noble must pay his 2015 dues on or before December 31, 2014 so he can be issued a dues card for 2015. If not paid by

December 31st of 2104, he is considered to be in arrears, and his name is turned over to the Membership Committee Chairman so that he or one of his committee members can contact you. Until his dues are paid in full, he can’t be issued a dues card, nor can he attend temple, unit and/or club meetings and functions, nor participate in parades or fundraising activities. Basically, the only Shrine functions that he can attend are those that are open to the public. Once his dues are paid in full, his dues card is issued and all rights and privileges are restored. If a member is in arrears, the Temple must still pay the per capita and hospital assessments for that member. That money cannot be recovered after one year. Our by-laws permit suspension “after one

year or more” of being in arrears. In the past, we have suspended after two years, which has cost the temple significant amounts of unrecoverable assessments over the years. We simply can’t afford to do that anymore. In September of this year the Khedive Board of Directors voted to suspend those members in arrears at the one year point. If a Noble does not pay his 2015 dues on or before December 31, 2015, he is subject to suspension. On the other hand, when a member requests to demit, he must be current in all dues and assessments for the request to be considered. This means that a member who is in arrears on his dues cannot demit. Even though he may submit his request for demit, it cannot be considered or approved unless and until he is current in his dues and assessments. So what’s the difference, you may ask? A properly demitted member can re-petition for restoration and will only pay the current year dues and per capita/ hospital assessments. A suspended member can also petition for restoration, but will be required to pay all dues and per capita and hospital assessments that are in arrears, as well as the current years dues and assessments. Hope that this helps. As always, feel free to e-mail or call me. Yours in the Faith John Howe Assistant Rabban

reetings Nobles, It is hard to believe that the year is almost at an end. We had very successful MASA and SASA conventions this year with many trophies won by our units. The Temple Business meeting and Fall Ceremonial will be held on November 19,20,21 We still need new candidates for the fall class. The Oyster Bowl will be held on November 28th. If you need tickets, please call Anne at the Officer or see any Divan member. On Sunday the 29th we will have the Tree Lighting and pot luck dinner to kick off the Official Holiday Season. If you have a request for a Divan member to install your officers, please let the Potentate know as soon as you can so the schedule can be set. Susan and I would like to thank Illustrious Sir. Elwood and Lady Pat for the leadership and hard work in making 2015 a Great Year. We look forward to working with Noble Woody and Lady Terry in moving Khedive Forward for the Future. Finally, as we approach the Holiday Season, Susan and I would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year. Sincerely & Fraternally, Mike Coffman High Priest & Prophet

obles, as the year comes to a close, let us reflect on what we have accomplished so far. It has been a busy nine months. We are a team and I thank you for your contributions. We still have fundraising functions, visits, and the last business meeting to go. Here is the upcoming schedule: November 19, 20, 21 Business Meeting and Fall Ceremonial, November 28, 66th Oyster Bowl, November 29, Christmas Tree Lighting, December 17, Stag Party, and December 20, Children’s Christmas Party. Please try to attend these functions. In addition, I would encourage you to start contacting potential members as we approach the Fall Ceremonial. We have a “Go Getter Award” certificate, that was initiated by the Divan, and will be given to our 1st Line Signers. One very important note is the per capita increase. If you are able to be a LMIP member, take advantage of the savings. It will cost $450.00 dollars before the end of the year and you will not pay any future increases. In 2016, it will jump to $900.00. Please see Illustrious Charlie or Bill at the office. You can also pay by installment. The weekend of October 10, Khedive again participated in the MAHOVA Family Day parade. Let’s tip our hats to our

members who were there to support our Potentate and all the units. The following units performed, to the delight of the crowd: Beach Bum Brothers, Camaros, Hillbillies, Mini 18 Wheelers, Motor Patrol, and Scooter Patrol. Our very own Les Aker, Director of Uniformed Units, led the pack. On October 11, a fine performance was also given by the Khedive Notables at the Family Picnic. Directed by Jeff Davis, Director Khedive Band. The family picnic was a big success, in spite of the weather. Lastly, Lady Violy and I wish to express our gratitude for the generous support and hospitality you have shown us during our first journey. We still have a lot to learn and appreciate the wisdom and help of so many who have mentored us. We are enjoying the great experiences and look forward to continuing our journey with you next year. ime to “Fall Ahead” with New Members. Our final Ceremonial of 2015 will be held on November 20 and 21. Many of our members have made an effort to encourage membership growth over the year, but now we need everyone to reach out to a Brother Mason and invite them to become a Shriner. Our goal is a class of 50 (minimum, we’d love more) new Khedive Shriners. The Masonic Temple in Norfolk Virginia had a One Day Master Mason

Conferral on August 29, 2015. I don’t have the exact number, but close to 100 men

became part of the Masonic Brotherhood on that day. That is nearly 100 potential Shrine Masons for Khedive. If you do not have petitions for membership, they are available at the Khedive business office, through the members of the Divan, and most of the Clubs and Units. Grab a few, contact your Masonic Lodge for the names and phone numbers of these new Masons, and reach out in fellowship, fun, and support of our “kids”. Please take a few moments to participate in our quest for new members. It doesn’t cost you anything but a little time. The rewards for the Shrine kids, whose parents were told they would never walk (those same kids who run, laugh, and play at our events), are priceless! 50 NEW MEMBERS! Transportation Report

From the Desk of Cliff Atkinson by Chairman Khedive Transportation

H

ave you read the letter from our patient parent, Ms. Carswell? We don’t often get a letter of thanks like this. It sure makes us feel good when we get one. We don’t spend our time and efforts transporting children to and from our hospitals looking for a reward. We know in our hearts what we have done. But, it always gives us a nice boost when we go get an “Attaboy.” While we don’t often get a written thanks for what we do, we almost always get a reward. Sometimes the reward is the priceless smile from a child. Mostly it’s a “Thank you” from the parent. Even when, at the end of a trip, the patient and parents rush to get into their home without a thanks, we know that once again we have

12 HI-NOBLE 4TH QTR 2015

completed a successful trip. The rewards we get from driving our patients and parents to and from their appointments are always priceless. By the time you read this, we will probably have a new van for transporting our kids. In the past, we have looked for a large van to transport the maximum number of patients per trip. Currently, we seldom transport more than two patients at a time; maybe two or three times a

year. Therefore, the large vans are not as effective for our current situation. We will probably replace one of our large vans with a mini-van. They are excellent for transporting either one or two patients, get better gas mileage, and cheaper to buy. We need your help in getting new patients. Our patient load is slowly dwindling down. Fifteen years ago we had over 300 patients and today we have about 130. It’s getting harder to get patients to travel as far as we do to an appointment, even when it doesn’t cost them anything. But the important thing is we care for the patient. We are on the leading edge of treatments for burn, scoliosis, and other conditions. While other hospitals worry about being reimbursed for their treatments, we don’t. They will only do the procedures for which they can be reimbursed. If we can get reimbursed by their insurance, fine. If we can’t, we are still going to do what is best for the treatment of our patient. Please help us in finding new patients.

If you don’t get your fill of food and beverages there, visit Dave McClellan and members of the Chesapeake Shrine Club as they will open the Oyster Pit once again inside the Stadium with a menu of Oysters and all the fixing’s available. This is the Old Dominion Monarchs 5th appearance in the Oyster Bowl with 4 consecutive victories behind them, they’ll be looking for number 5 if Shriner

luck prevails. Florida Atlantic a strong opponent will certainly test the Monarchs. This will be Quarterback, Shuler Bentley first Oyster Bowl game along with one of his top receivers David Washington (Last year’s MVP) should make an exciting duo. Nobles, we do have a lot of tickets to this year’s game and tailgate party still available for the low price of $30 game day ticket and $10 for the Tailgate Party so tell your friends and family as time is running out and will not be available at the stadium. See Anne Harriman at the front desk or anyone on the Oyster Bowl Committee!!! Imperial Sir Ed Stolze will be on hand Friday and Saturday to enjoy all the activities that surround the Oyster Bowl. I’d like to thank all the Noble’s and their ladies, Units and Clubs who support the Oyster Bowl through tickets purchases, donations and sponsorships, without you, we wouldn’t have a game Thank you for your continued support and May God Bless you and your Family See you at the Game Terry Riley

ell 2015 is quickly coming to a close. But we haven’t finished yet. We have the Fall Ceremonial happening on November 20 and 21. I dont need to tell you how bad we need members I am sure you know. Next up is the 66th annual Khedive Shrine Oyster Bowl at Old Dominion. And if that isn’t enough the very next day we will be holding our annual Christmas tree lighting and pot luck dinner. What a great way to get the holiday season going. Please go to www.khediveshrine.org for the exact start and stop times. In closing I would personally like to thank everyone who assisted me in the

various functions I was Chairman of through out the year. We were blessed with good weather and we even made a little money for the Temple. Even the Seafood Feast (photos right) boosted a profit above what it had been in previous years. So from my house to yours I want to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I am sure I will see ya around. Yours in the Faith, Joe Ramsey

ften information is distributed and does not answer questions members may have regarding the on-going operation of the Philadelphia hospital. Being mindful of that, my message for this issue of the HI-NOBLE is in the form of a request: If any Noble has a question, I would be happy to respond or I will make inquiry and provide the proper reply. My email is: lonweber@aol.com. Thank you for your consideration my brothers. Yours in the Faith, Lon Weber

Greenville Hospital Report by Jody Dudley

B

rother Shriners and Families, Hello from Greenville, SC. We are doing well! Patient count is still up. Three of the family rooms are complete and looking good. Three more are under renovation and should be ready by the end of October. We also just hired our fifth doctor and hoping to hire number six in the future! It's hard to believe that just a few years ago SHC Greenville and several other Shriners Hospitals were slated to be closed! With the help from

the folks in Greenville and good donations from Shriners and Temples, things have really changed. We want to add another Operating Room and update some equipment in the next few years. We are now seeing over 100 patients a day. Tampa Headquarters wants all Hospitals to be drawing no more then 50% on the Endowment by the end of this year. Well my good friends, as of our September Board Meeting we are down to 28%! Which will be even lower by year's end. We still have October, November and December! As we travel along, never lose sight of who we are and what we do. Sometimes we all forget our Obligation and what we stand for, myself included. I just hope I can always proudly say "This is Who we are!" and not "That's what we used to be!" Things are changing around us, but we can change together. It's easy once you get moving. Thank You My Friends, Jody R Dudley SHC Greenville

reetings Nobles, It’s hard to believe I am already writing this input for the fourth quarter Hi Noble. The time has flown by this year. Since my last input, we have seen MASA and SASA come and go, with some welldeserved trophies being earned both in drill competition and during the parades. I want to thank all the units that participated in both of the aforementioned parades. I would especially like to thank you for your patience during the Friday evening parade in Myrtle Beach.

SUFFOLK SHRINE CLUB MEETS EACH FOURTH WEDNESDAY NIGHT

We had a brisk day in Richmond for the Masonic Home Family Day Parade on October 10th. A great time was had by all in attendance. Unfortunately we got rained out for the Suffolk Peanut Festival Parade. We sure missed all the smiling faces and thank you’s we always receive. The parade schedule is winding down, with Urbanna coming up on November 7th and the Fall Ceremonial Parade on November 21st, followed that evening by the Uniformed Units Dance (see flyer inside back page). As a reminder, your unit is welcome to participate in local Christmas Parades however a request must be approved by the Illustrious Potentate. Thanks again for your support this year. I look forward to seeing all at the dance on November 21st. Yours in the Faith, Les Aker Director of Uniformed Units

Khedive Clowns by Joe Ramsey

A

s 2015 comes to a close the Clown unit is slowly but surely increasing their ranks. Unfortunately we lost a couple Clowns for various reasons but we picked up a couple. We are always looking for new smiling faces; why not give us a try? One new addition is Dave Davis AKA “Gonzo” (photo top) who has joined our ranks and jumped in head first. Hopefully his enthusiasm will be contagious and a few of our dormant Clowns will get their gear out of mothballs. The Unit has been working everywhere lately we had a great showing at the MASA parade (photos right). After Urbana I believe the next function will be the Children’s Party on December 20th. Put on your Clown duds and come on out and entertain the kids. The Clowns will once again celebrate Christmas on December 21st with the Chesapeake Shrine Club which is always a great time for food and fellowship. This will also be the installation of Officers. As always we have that delicious Clown barbeque available. Just contact the head chef, Harry Tew, or Leroy Lane and they will hook you up. That is about it for now except to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year. Keep Smiling, Joe ”Jingles” Ramsey

With the holidays coming we want to extend an invitation to anyone interested in joining a motorized unit to come out to our next meeting and and check us out. We need a few good men to join us and see how much fun these cars can be. All it takes is one ride and you could be hooked for life. Our meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 PM in our meeting room at the Temple. Come on by and say hello! Khedive Units

Drum & Bugle Corps by Assistant Director Richard Quintilone

T

he Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps is once winding down another year and marching into 2016. We congratulate every Noble in the Drum & Bugle Corps for doing a super job at the MASA parade. The Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps marched back into the limelight. It has been 15 years since the trophy graced our Temple, Congratulations on a job well done. The 1st place trophy was earned because we played our hearts out with grueling practices in the Temple parking lot, at Shrine O Rama, Hotel Pool, an evening on the Boardwalk resulting in the Best Marching Band in the Parade. The following week repeated this event and won 1st place at SASA. A humbling honor to be considered the best Shrine Drum & Bugle Corps on the entire Eastern Coast, like from Maine to Florida! We played with emotions, pride, precision and exhaustion. New Feet On The Street Would Be Welcomed. We are honored to have a dedicated group of Ladies that support our Corps. The Ladies and Nobles of the Drum Corps Spring Fling were the guest of Lady Jessica and Goodie Glassman. They have a great Gazebo and waterfront view. Let us all welcome our two newest members joining the Percussion Specialist Line: Noble Thomas T. Bell with his Lady Jo Ann and Noble Othelo “O D” Gervacio with his Lady Gwyn. We are grateful to Frank Grice for pulling together the annual family picnic which was well attended with great weather. There are not enough accolades written that would express our thanks and appreciation. The Khedive Seafood Fest was well represented by Joe Harris, Chuck Bateman, Terry Riley and his cast of servers, Bill Lehm and Jimmy Newby on the refreshment Organization team, and Bob Metz and Richard Quintilone the Oyster Chiefs. We wish to honor Bob Metz, whose inspiring leadership at MASA and creative cooking skills are greatly appreciated. He demonstrates the best attributes of a true Noble. We look forward to the Peanut Festival Parade, Urbanna Oyster festival Parade, Fall Ceremonial Parade, George’s Oyster Roast, Christmas Parade TBD, Oyster Bowl at ODU, Chili Cook off tailgating at the Apprentice School, and our highly anticipated Christmas Social. “No Man stands taller than when he stoops down to pick up a Child.” Please keep our Shrine Children, Parents, Caregivers and Roadrunners in our prayers as they travel to their Medical Appointments. Let us pray that the greatest healing power on earth is our Number one driver. Remember to give thanks to the men and women protecting our country, past and present. Please pray to protect those in harm’s way. May God shed his healing light on our Ladies and Families, and All Good Children say “Amen.”

22 HI-NOBLE 4TH QTR 2015

To our sick and distressed we have often said, “If you need anything, please give me a call.” This is a sincere gesture since we know whom we put our faith. I believe the reply should include: “I will call you” followed by saying “I am going to stop by and visit” even better “We will meet for Lunch or Supper” and finally, “Take my hand and let us pray together.” Take a moment to contact a Noble, bring him back to the Temple. We would like to invite all Noble’s to come out and join the Drum & Bugle Corps; it would give us great pleasure to see your feet on the street. Our meetings and practice are Mondays at 7:30 PM. With refreshments starting 6:30. “We Are The Beat Of Khedive” Assistant Director Richard E. Quintilone

In Memoriam

Motor Corps by Past Captain Ernie Ayers Nobles, On the afternoon of September 24th, our Captain, Gary Emerick passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach surrounded by his family. Captain Gary's life was devoted to his family, his friends and to the Shrine. As a Shriner, Gary's dedication was unquestioned, he could always be counted on to take a major role in whatever was needed at the Temple, and lend a hand to a brother in need. As Captain and member of the Motor Corps Gary's tireless dedication has helped shape the Motor Corps what it is today, Motor Corps will never be quite the same without him. Captain Gary received Masonic Rites on September 29th at the Khedive Shrine Center followed by a final ceremonial parade in his honor lead by his beloved "Digger." For us, God called Gary home way too soon and is deeply missed by all of us. Please continue to support and send your prayers to Gary's family during this very difficult time. Yours in the faith The Khedive Motor Corps

P

ONDER THIS! The position of Temple Director is an appointed position by the incoming Potentate each year. I have held this position since 2004, by definition it is, Director. The director, under the direction of the Potentate, shall have charge of the Second Section of ceremonials of initiation. Our last traditional Second Section Ceremonial was on 2 June 2012. By notice from the Imperial Potentate, September 2012 our Temple made the decision to go with the non-traditional ceremonials, this makes the Temple Director position obsolete. The Second Section will be missed by all, and end 90 years of Temple history. The Directors Staff stands by the Potentates decision. In August of this year, I made the decision that it was time for me to end my 53 years as a Temple Parade Marshal. I talked to Charlie Taylor, P.P.,

Khedive Shrine Center Parade Marshal and asked to be released of my duties as a Parade Marshal. I have worked as a Parade Marshal for the original Oyster Bowl games, the Norfolk Virginia Azalea Parades, and all of the MASA and SASA Parades at Virginia Beach from 1962. The MASA Parade at Virginia Beach on 12 September 2015 was the first time since September 2002, that I did not give the command to step off, at 0930, at Atlantic Ave. and 17th street, to start the parade. My thanks to Richard Underdown, P.P, and Melvin "Mel" Allmond who stepped in to work with Charlie Taylor, P.P. and his Parade Marshals, to make this years parade a success, and they only have 53 more years to do this. It has been a good run, and a blast, I love a parade. May God Bless our Shriners Hospitals for Children. "Its All About The Kids.

reetings Ya'all, Well it's been a busy month with SASA and MASA (photos right) back to back this year! Busy but lots of fun. We had a great time with our adopted Shriner Child Jonah and his Mom riding along with us in the parade. This year's dinner at Black Angus was delicious and loads of fun. Special thanks to Bud and Barbra Marchman for making the arrangements for us again this year. SASA was such fun this year!! Despite the last minute scrambling due to rain, we were still able to pull off 2"d place. Good work guys!! Our dinner at the Brizilian Steakhouse was lots of fun and delicious! Again hats off to the Marchmans for making it happen. Special thanks to Bill Nolan and Don Howard for all the hard work they do to make the arrangements for our accommodations down there. The Hillbillie hospitality room was exceptional this year! Great Job!!

Chicken Fest will be on October 25th this year. Hope to see everyone there. Next we will be looking to Urbanna the first weekend of November, for the Oyster Fest and parade. This is always a good time for the Hillbillies and expect this year will be no different. Fall Ceremonial and Open House will be November 20th and 21st . The November stated meeting will be the election of Officers, and the Installation and Christmas party take place December 18th at the Elizabeth Manor Country Club. As always, every 4th Wednesday of the month is the Stated Meeting, so ya'all come on down to the Shack. Sam McAfee Assistant Director HI-NOBLE 4TH QTR 2015

reetings all, by the time you get this Hi-Noble, the 2015 Khedive Golf Season will be over and we will be planning for the 2016 golf season. As stated in our first Hi-Noble we have had good weather so far this year and we are averaging between 100 to 120 players signing up to play each of our outings. We still only have had one hole-in one at the time this article was being written, but we have had several of our members get within inches of being a hole-in-one. We still have several of current Khedive Shrine Golf Club members who are unable to participate in our golf outings due to either illness or injuries, so please keep these members and their families in your prayers as well any others that might be sick or injured. It was noted in our first Hi-Noble for the year that the Khedive Shrine Golf Club has members (Shriners as well as

will soon be in our rear view mirror and 2016 will be right in our face. On behalf of the Officers and Board I would like to congratulate soon to be Past President Wayne on putting together a great year. Just a short recap of the events. Our July Father/Son/Daughter night was well received and a good time was had by all with Jonathan Austin providing the entertainment. The Past Presidents party at the Aberdeen Barn was a super event with just about every Past President in attendance. It was also good to see Virginia Teller out and about again after her illness. Guest Members) that belong to the Law and Disorderly Group, which made a $750.00 donation to the Khedive Shrine Transportation Fund. During one of our August outings of this year, the Law and Disorderly organization made a second donation of $250.00 to the Khedive Shrine Center’s Transportations Fund for a grant total of $1,000 donated this year. This organization has made several donations over the years to support the Transportation Fund supporting the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children and Khedive’s Potentate and the Temple wants to thank all the members of the Law and out to Past President “Spike” Johnson who just recently lost his wife after an extended illness. At MASA the Club spearheaded a great hospitality room. Our hats are off to everyone that assisted in making it a success once again. Wayne and his crew will be hard at work at this year’s Oyster Bowl providing Clam chowder for the tailgating event and selling oysters inside the stadium. If you get a second stop by and say hi. Next up will be our Christmas party and installation of Officers being held on December 21st. We will have tickets available very soon the cost will be $40.00 per couple. On a personal note I would like to thank the Club and its membership for supporting me throughout the year in my many different endeavors. Any and all of the success we achieved I credit to ya. I want to send out a special “shout out” to Wayne “Chowda” Sherman. I do not think there is a single thing that I have asked

Disorderly organization for their support and donations. Note: During a conversation with one of our guest member about what he thought about the Khedive Shrine Golf Club and its members; he stated that he plays in several other golf clubs, but he makes sure that he plays in all the Khedive Shrine Golf Club outings because he knows that the Khedive Shrine Golf Club at the end of the year donates money to Transportation Fund helping the kids. This same guest member was inspired by the Shriners International TV advertisement, that he is now making a monthly donation. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club will be taking prospective membership applications for the 2016 golf season starting in February. Note: Shriners will be selected first and then guest members will be selected to fill opening for membership. Note: Duffer’s Dictionary of Pro Shop. The only place on a golf course where players fervently hope they won’t end up breaking a hundred. Yours in the Faith, Khedive Golf Club

A special thank you to the spouses who are always an integral part of Provost activities. Then along came MASA, SASA and the P-Nut Fest Parade. The Guard assisted in manning the MASA Temple Hospitality room along with Chesapeake Shrine club and other units. All who participated deserve a huge thank you from all Nobles as the room was a tremendous success. MASA assigned numerous duties for security throughout the convention weekend and the Guard provided each with top notch service. We then participated in the Parade on Saturday with 14 Guardsmen participating. ng Ready to Para t at MASA Para de vo s e t ti de o G r at P st o v

SASA, in Myrtle Beach SC, a week later brought another parade and competition for the Temple units. Provost had 12 members present and ready to march. With the superior marching ability Provost took 1st place in the parade. As always a top notch hospitality room was established and manned throughout the weekend. Again the spouses kept the tradition of assuring we didn’t mess up on what was served. A special thank you is extended to Allan Cannon and Gwinn Dunbar for loading, transporting and maintaining supplies including the return transportation to the Temple of all supplies. Provost was again ready to strut in the P-Nut fest parade but the weather washed out the entire event. What a disappointment. Planning continues for the Urbana Parade (Nov 7) and the upcoming Temple and Unit holiday events. Thought for the Quarter: Remember “It is not the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog.” Let’s show Shrine fight and grow our Temple. We are always looking for a few good men, come join us, we meet the 2nd Wednesday, each month at the Temple. Social is at 6:30 PM.

Roadrunners by President Ray Forehand

N

obles, We all know that the philanthropy of Shriners International is supporting Shriners Hospitals across North America. In short, “It’s all about the kids.” However, we seldom know much about the children (and their parents/guardians) we help. Here is a story about a young woman that has been a patient of ours for several years. Rebecca Rollick was born with the rare condition of Arthrogryposis. Arthrogryposis is a neuro-musculo-skeletal disorder that affects various joints in the body, usually at birth, in which multiple joints are severely curved. Rebecca has had 6 operations to correct most of the curving joints, the vast majority of these operations performed at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia. At this point, it is unclear if future surgeries will be required. Rebecca’s father, Rob, is a U.S. Navy veteran of 20 years and presently works for Greenville Transport of Chesapeake. Rebecca’s mother, Jessie, is a stay-at homemom. Jessie learned about Shriners Hospitals at a “special needs” symposium in Virginia Beach. A Noble provided her with information about Shriners Hospitals approximately 5 years ago. Since then, Rebecca’s treatment, braces and other orthopaedic devices have been provided by Shriners Hospital, Greenville, SC. Rebecca will require routine upgrades and various adjustments of prosthetic devices as she grows, but there is no reason to believe that she will not have a long and wonderful life. From the above information, you would think that Rebecca has had a difficult life—but you would be wrong. The Rollicks have raised their children in a strong faith-based home. Rebecca’s brother, David, is also a special needs patient that deals with the disorder of epilepsy. Rebecca loves mathematics and photography and is an excellent 7th grade student at Hugo Owens Middle School. She receives physical therapy several days a week and participates in various athletic events around the Tidewater area. While Rebecca certainly has various medical challenges, to refer to her as a disabled person would be woefully INACCURATE. She is an experienced, prolific, and winning Handcycle Athlete. Handcycles are specially built machines that allow persons with certain difficulties to cycle using only their hands to control the vehicle. Challenged Athletes Foundation and Athletes Helping Athletes have recently provided a grant to the Rebecca for a top of the line Force-G type cycle and Walter Gonzales of Gonzo's Gears maintains her equipment at no cost to the Rollicks. I

recently had the pleasure of watching her participate in the annual Young Life Capernaum 5K event held at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk in June 2015. Jessie and Rob Rollick’s respect and admiration for the Khedive Shriners, and especially the Roadrunners and Shriners Hospital Greenville cannot be overstated. Rebecca loves all the Shriners, the Roadrunner drivers, the swimming pool at the Drury Hotel, and all the doctors, nurses, prosthetists and other technical staffers at the hospital as well as the therapy dogs. It has been my pleasure to drive Rebecca and her mother on several trips to Greenville. It is “all about the kids and families” and all Shriners support this most worthy cause. Nobles, we still need more drivers. Roadrunners Club usually meets the second Saturday in February, May, August, and November at 9:30 a.m. Please consider becoming one of us and drive our patients and families.

hoy Nobles, Hope everyone has had a good summer. As for your Swashbucklers we have been busy. I will keep this short. We sailed in the South Norfolk July 4th parade. We had Arrrrr 4th ever Pig Pickin (photos right). Thank you to those who came out and helped us. Thank you to all who came out and supported it as well. In closing I wish everyone a safe holiday Season that will soon be upon us. During Arrrr pig Pickin, One memory will always be treasured, and it is the photo with one of Arrrr patients. "Gabby." reeting Nobles and Ladies, During the fall business meeting the need for everyone to make a special effort to bring new masons into our Shrine Association was made abundantly clear with a noticeable drop in active membership. I would like to implore each of us to establish a new friendship within our own units as well. Like planting a seed and neglecting to water or fertilize it, we act surprised when the seed fails to grow into a thriving plant as many of our members fall by the wayside and no longer participate in our organization of Shriners. Brethren embrace your fellow members in a spirit of mutual fraternity and help them to feel welcome in our brotherhood of Masonic Shriners as well

as our newest Nobles from the Spring Ceremonial. Our Captain Gill Sawyer led our motorized unit in the South Norfolk parade, the Shriners Appreciation Parade on the track at the Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia and the “Clam Slam 2015” Shriners Parade in Cape Charles, Virginia (photos right), where our unit received the best overall appearance trophy. We all had a mutually enjoyable experience participating in the Mid Atlantic Shriners Association competition and parade in Virginia Beach, Virginia, September eleventh and twelfth where our unit won our division in precision maneuvers and gymkhana speed events. A special thanks to Noble Biggie & Lady Betty for providing breakfast and parking at Ocean Eddie’s before the MASA parade on Saturday. We have space for a few new Nobles to add to our fleet of trucks as we grow our unit. We invite you to drop on by the Truck Stop. We ordinarily meet on the first Monday of each month in our Khedive Shrine. Es Selamu Aleikum! Noble Michael Johansen

he Knights of Mecca has had a good year under the leadership of Wor Anthony Wayne Hall. Unfortunately, we lost our Vice President Jemery Utt to a job transfer in Northern Virginia, but we do congratulate him on his recent marriage. Our board of Directors, all past presidents, have been hard at work selecting a slate of officers for 2016. The board consists of Woody Brown, Eddie Usita, Stormy Thorson, and Ronnie Shank.

At our September meeting, they selected Eddie Cantada for President 2016, and John Skinner for Vice President. They will be installed on December 22nd at the Shrine Center along with other units. Looking forward to supporting the incoming Khedive officers for 2016. To Illustrous Sir Elwood Paschal, you have had a great year, and we wish you and Pat our best wishes for a Happy Holiday season, and a little rest. Ed Meise

Khedive Clubs

Williamsburg Shrine Club by Past President Tom Lasher

A

s I watch the leaves beginning to fall and the temperatures dip, the Williamsburg Shrine Club prepares for another colonial winter. As you walk Duke of Gloucester Street, the smell of smoke rising from the many old fireplaces and the crispness of the air takes you back in time, and reminds you too, of what’s to come. As I write this, we are all watching hurricane Joaquin in hopes that it will take another direction and not affect us. But still there are many hopes, prayers and worries about the fact that it may. I find this situation very similar to the situations in which our hospital patients and their families find themselves. It’s all about hopes, prayers, faith and planning that you were hoping you would never have to do. But it’s because of Shriners and our hospitals that so many families have some comfort in a bad situation and put their faith in us, our hospitals and doctors. And as far as Joaquin is concerned we too must find hope and faith that “this too will pass” and all will be right again. This quarter has been a relatively quiet one for the WSC. In July we had a program presented by Brother Charlie Stayton, a member of Williamsburg Lodge No. 6. Brother Charlie presented

a program on the 1676 Bacon’s Rebellion, giving us its history including the circumstances behind it as well as the outcome and the ramifications of those results. It was a fascinating and very educational evening. August was our semiannual Ladies Night which was held at the Colonial Heritage dining room here in Williamsburg. It was a fun filled evening which even included some dancing. It’s always great when we have our ladies! During September the Club did its second collection for our annual Paper Crusade/Drive and as always, the public showed its generosity. The September Club meeting offered us an interesting program on the subject of asphalt. Worshipful John Ingram of Ocean View Lodge 335 presented the program, explaining its history, uses and problematic issues. As we begin to look forward to the cooler temperatures of fall, we look forward to more informative Club programs, and evenings of good food and good fellowship. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month. The social hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM. Come join us. Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. When you get to Williamsburg, take the “Camp Perry” exit off of I-64. At the top of the ramp, turn left if you’re coming from the Peninsula or the Southside. Pass through the first traffic light, then turn right at the next traffic light, and then turn right again at the next traffic light. That is Bypass Rd., or US Rt. 60. The hotel is located at the top of the hill, on the right, next to the Knights Inn 1776. We would look forward to seeing you.

reetings from the Virginia Beach Shrine Club. Can you believe summer is gone and we are looking at the holidays already. Where has the time gone? By the time you read this MASA and SASA have already come and gone but what a great time it was. Mother Nature decided to rain on our parade but that didn't dampen our spirits. We still walked away with a few trophies, way to go Khedive! Now it's time to get back to work. The lights are on and the Virginia Beach Shrine Club is ready to go. So please, make an attempt to come out and visit. As I have said before, Teresa and I really enjoy your company and fellowship, it's not has much fun when you’re not there! Besides, you might miss some exciting news concerning our upcoming get togethers but more on that later. On a final note, the Virginia Beach Shrine Club is looking for a few good men to operate and improve our club. For further information please contact nominating chairman Bill Keating. See you at a table!

THANK YOU To all who supported, played, advertised or contributed in anyway to this event, we the Golf Classic Committee would like to say THANKS. All of this goes to support the SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN and TRANSPORTATION FUND. We thank you and the children thank you. HI-NOBLE 4TH QTR 2015

ANNUAL POT LUCK DINNER & TREE LIGHTING

CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY

November 29, 2015 Social 4:00 PM Dinner 5:00 PM

December 20, 2015 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Christmas Party 2015

Greetings Club Presidents, Unit Captains and Nobles All, Every year all the Units, Clubs, and many individuals help with generous donations of money and toys for the Khedive Shrine Childrens Christmas Party. I personally would like to thank all those who contributed and made the Christmas Party a success last season. It’s that time of the year again and we are in need of your generosity once again. The price of toys has increased especially in the remote and higher tech toys the children play with now. The dues that are collected each year for the Units & Clubs Association do not cover the cost for the food and toys etc. We are asking for donations of $100 to $150 to fund the Khedive Shrine Childrens Christmas Party on Decenber 20, 2015, 1:00 - 4:00 PM. “Please Help Us Make this a Happy Event.” I would like to personally invite every Noble and his Lady to our Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Tree Lighting at the Shrine Center on November 29, 2015. The dress is casual with Fez. Social begins at 4:00 PM and Dinner at 5:00 PM. We ask that you bring a covered dish and a toy for a child. The Units & Clubs Assocition will provide beverages, chicken tenders, and veggie tray. Toys should range from infant to 12 years of age, up to a $30 value, unwrapped and in it’s original packaging. All toys will be wrapped for Santa before the Christmas party so Santa can give them to the children. Once again all toys need to be in original packaging for health reasons. Please no stuffed animals or used toys. Thank you again in advance for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the Pot Luck dinner. Please make checks payable to: Khedive Units & Clubs c/o Bill Batten, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Yours in Faith, Bill Hoggard Units & Clubs President 2015
