Good maize potential offers dairy farmers an opportunity – but avoid costly harvest mistakes

Good potential in this year’s maize crops looks set to give dairy farmers an opportunity to clamp decent tonnages of quality silage, which could provide a useful buffer with uncertain milk prices, says Volac silage expert, Ken Stroud.

But it will be crucial to avoid common harvest pitfalls that let dry matter (DM) and nutrients slip away in the clamp.

“We’re seeing a fair bit of uncertainty in milk prices,” says Mr Stroud. “Also in cereal prices, which could impact on feed costs.

“While some maize crops haven’t fully recovered from the dry spring, most look in good shape. Conserving good stocks of quality silage, to become more self-sufficient in winter feed and maximise milk produced from homegrown forage, makes sound financial sense in times of volatility,” he adds.

Typically, about 1 in every 10 trailer loads of maize DM ensiled are lost due to unwanted bacteria, yeasts and moulds growing in clamps, says Mr Stroud, but losses can double if attention to detail slips at harvest and ensiling. Also, these microbes consume the most nutritious parts – sugars and starches – leaving the remaining silage lower in energy, he stresses.

“Unwanted microbes come into the clamp on the crop at harvest (see infographic). You can’t completely stop this, but inhibiting their growth in the clamp is vital. This requires attention to detail at several stages (see table). All these stages are important. But there are three common pitfalls that could be particularly important to avoid this year.”

Pitfall 1 – harvesting maize too late

Harvesting maize late, when it is dying back, not only risks the crop being past its nutritional peak, says Mr Stroud, it also increases the risk of unwanted microbes coming into the clamp on the dying foliage.

“Too often maize is harvested when leaves are dying or dead. It should be harvested as soon as it reaches 30-33% DM and ideally while still green. Doing this provides a good balance of starch in the cobs and living foliage with higher nutritional value. Crops harvested drier are also harder to consolidate, leaving them prone to losses from heating caused by aerobic spoilage,” he adds.

Pitfall 2 – thinking maize ‘conserves itself’

A common myth is that maize does not benefit from conserving with a silage additive, says Mr Stroud. But after investing in growing the crop, ensiling it untreated leaves its conservation at the mercy of whatever microbes are present on the crop – good ones and bad ones, he

adds.

“Maize silage suffers two types of losses: obvious losses from heating, caused by yeasts and moulds growing in the presence of air; but also invisible losses from poor fermentation, due to inefficient fermentation bacteria. Both waste the silage’s DM and energy and release carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas.

“You can’t regulate which types of bacteria, yeasts and moulds are present at harvest. But applying a dual-acting additive, such as Ecocool, containing beneficial bacteria effective against both problems, drives in favour of a quality fermentation to put you in better control. Ecocool has also been shown to keep maize silage cool and stable for more than 10 days after exposure to air.”

Pitfall 3 – harvesting maize too low

Although tempting to cut maize low to the ground – especially if looking for extra bulk – the stem base is low in nutritional value and typically higher in unwanted microbes, says Mr Stroud, so you risk losing more than you gain.

“Instead, ask your contractor to leave at least 15 cm of stubble. Similarly, make sure they chop the crop short enough to aid consolidation, especially with drier crops, but long enough for it to perform in the cow’s rumen. Consider a 1.5-2.0cm chop length, or 1.2cm if needed,” he suggests.

An adaptive and education-based approach to regenerative farming can enhance soil carbon cycling with the potential to rapidly increase farm productivity, says Tom Dillon, director of Regenerate Outcomes.

“Using soil tests from Eurofins Agro UK, we are partnering with farms to help enable a regenerative system change, based on extensive and accurate soil health data. The tests include vital phospholipid fatty acid (PFLA) analysis that is helping our farms improve soil health by better understanding the microbial composition of their soils. We are also helping our partner farmers to monitor soil carbon sequestration with the aim of generating soil carbon credits which form an additional farm income stream,” he explains.

Regenerate Outcomes has designed a programme to comply with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) which provides the highest standard of verification. The aim is to create a profit share agreement for participating farms with up to 67% of the

value of Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) being distributed to the farm, subject to a minimum VCU performance.

KUHN Farm Machinery has announced its product line-up for Tillage Live at WH Corbett in Atherstone, Warwickshire.

KUHN’s lightweight Megant drill features new tine coulters, an updated terminal, and the option to add a second hopper. The Megant 602R shares functionality with the previous 600 model, but features half width shut off and can be specified with an additional SH 1120, 110- litre hopper to drill two crops in the same pass.

Due to its lightweight design, the Megant can be operated by tractors with as little as 150 horsepower. Three types of tines can be specified on the Megant, including reversible forward action, straight, and a new narrow 12mm straight tine coulter which reduces soil displacement through improved penetration and also reduces wear on the tine thanks to the addition of carbide plated points.

Kubota (UK) Ltd’s announcement to supply Topcon auto-steer options for its M-series tractors has brought with it two free upgrades through its partnership with UK-supplier LH Agro.

Customers ordering any LH Agro-supplied Topcon auto-steering kit through their Kubota dealer can take advantage of free Headland Turns activation worth £625, along with a free 12-month RTK subscription valued at £650. This offer is available until 30 September 2023.

“Headland Turns is a great new feature that lets the operator carry out an automated headland turn without needing to physically steer the tractor,” explains Jonathan Rook, Kubota’s product manager for M-series tractors. “Along with a free 12-month RTK subscription, these two free upgrades will make it much easier for those getting on the precision farming ladder to make greater use of precision farming technology.”

JCB has made a second major breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its super-efficient hydrogen engines into a Mercedes Sprinter van.

The white van retrofit was completed in just two weeks and one of the vehicle’s first test drivers was JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who is leading the company’s £100 million hydrogen engine project.

The internal combustion engine used in the van is the same as those already powering prototype JCB construction and agricultural machines. It is the second Mercedes vehicle to be retrofitted with a JCB hydrogen engine; earlier this year a 7.5 tonne Mercedes truck was given the JCB hydrogen treatment.

Lord Bamford said: “We have retrofitted this vehicle with a JCB hydrogen engine to demonstrate how simple it will be to convert existing vans and to show that it is not only

With soil moisture levels high this summer, arable growers must use good quality slug pellets, applied accurately, to control burgeoning slug populations. That is the advice from ADAMA’s molluscicides technical specialist, Andy Bailey, who also explains that spreading equipment must be properly calibrated to ensure accurate pellet application.

“The wet conditions throughout much of June and July have provided ideal conditions for an extended breeding window for slugs which means populations are already high, with reports of attacks on young oilseed rape crops coming in thick and fast,” Mr Bailey explains. “In those parts of the UK where the unsettled weather has continued into August, slug populations could be even greater, making it all the more vital for growers to apply a good quality slug bait on time and accurately.”

Molluscicides should only be used once populations have reached the appropriate damage-risk threshold per trapping point, and only if weather conditions are favourable.

“Applying slug pellets immediately prior to heavy rainfall can lead to their rapid degradation, especially if the pellets are of a poorer quality,” Mr Bailey continues.

“Regular assessments to evaluate slug populations is the way to go, with spreading equipment calibrated and ready to be deployed as soon as the threshold point has been reached and a period of favourable, settled weather prevails.”

According to the National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS), slug pellet applicators should be calibrated in accordance with the machinery manufacturer’s recommendations prior to and at regular intervals during the spreading season.

“Pellet spreaders and spinners should be positioned at an appropriate height for the machine on which they are mounted (typically 110cm above the ground for quadmounted applicators) and operated at a sensible forward operating speed of around 12kph to ensure slug pellets are applied evenly and consistently over the entire spreading width,” Mr Bailey adds.

Pellet size and consistency are also vital to application accuracy. “The only molluscicide currently available in the UK is ferric phosphate,” Mr Bailey explains. “But, while there are many brands of pellet that use the same active ingredient, not all baits are created equally.

“Pellet size, weight and

shape all have an effect on spreading ballistics, with only the best pellets able to achieve consistent and accurate spread patterns. Gusto IRON pellets, for example, are manufactured to strict tolerances to ensure they match their 2.5mm by 2.0mm size specification which ensures a consistent spread pattern and an optimal number of baiting points of 40-50 pellets per m2 when applied at typical field rates.”

Gusto IRON pellets also offer improved longevity in wet conditions and are characterised by their bright blue colour which makes them easily visible in seedbeds so that growers can quickly assess when a second application is required.

“Gusto IRON pellets contain 2.94% ferric phosphate which provides fast-acting protection against crop damage by suppressing slugs’ appetites as soon as they are ingested,” Mr Bailey describes. “The pellets also offer class-leading durability and palatability thanks to ADAMA’s ‘Desidro Technology’ manufacturing process which uses a twostage drying process to ensure an ideal balance between pellet persistence and palatability, with Gusto IRON pellets proving hard enough to remain intact during wet weather whilst still remaining palatable and effective.”

KUHN Farm Machinery has launched an innovative 13m mounted tedder which will allow farmers to access hard to reach fields with a wider working width machine thanks to a compact design.

The GF 13003 is the widest mounted tedder on the market and joins the trailed version that was launched last year. The mounted design places the weight of the tedder over the rear of the tractor, to avoid the implement slipping when working on hillsides, helping to increase accuracy and stability.

Rhodri Jenkins is KUHN’s grassland product specialist: “For users after increased output from a mounted tedder, the GF 13003 offers improved manoeuvrability and the ability reach fields through narrow lanes and

gateways. The clever design means all 12 rotors fold into a 2.99m transport width and a 2.67m transport height, while the tedder features just one gearbox and two hydraulic valves for simple operation.”

To maintain forage quality and prevent losses on field margins, KUHN’s Oblique setting pivots the two outer rotors rearwards when tedding on headlands, to ensure all tedded grass is thrown back on to the cut area. The system requires no additional hydraulic supply.

Uprated arms and heavyduty tines accompany a new OPTITEDD rotor to improve longevity of the GF 13003 and reduce servicing and maintenance.

“Further developments on the GF 13003 include rotor wheel deflectors as standard to prevent grass build-up around the wheels and column. This is especially useful in long crops and young high-sugar crops that tend to wrap around the wheels during operation,” says Rhodri.

KVERNELAND GROUP UK: CHANGES AT TOP

The organisers of the annual British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival are delighted that the event will return this year

With effect from 01 August 2023, Dan Crowe will take over as managing director of the Kverneland Group UK Ltd, from retiring md Joe Bell.

Dan Crowe’s career spans over 26 years with the company, and he takes over his new role with the Kverneland Group UK after 21 years as a product manager, latterly responsible for all feeding and forage equipment.

“I’m looking forward to taking the business forward, and building on what Joe has achieved in his time at the top,” said Dan. “After almost 40 years in the industry –and the last 20 as managing director of the Kverneland Group UK - Joe is taking a well-earned retirement.”

Joe Bell started his agricultural career with Ferrag in 1984 as financial controller.

It may be recalled that the business was sold to Kverneland in 1998 and eventually merged with Vicon to form Kverneland Group UK, based at its current location in St Helens, Merseyside.

In that time, Joe has guided the UK operation and its dealer network through many changes including the subsequent take-over in 2012 by Kubota Holdings.

Joe said: “It’s been a tremendous period of change and evolution, and I’m now looking forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren.”

Coinciding with the change of managing director are a series of team changes that have arisen from internal promotion, to strengthen the product management team.

The first is David Perry, who is replacing Dan Crowe as the product manager responsible for feeding and forage equipment. David started his career at Kverneland in 2014 as a product demonstrator and has been an area sales manager for the last six years.

The second is Simon Wills,

who takes on the role of crop care product manager responsible for sprayers, fertiliser spreaders and control terminals. Simon has been with the Kverneland Group since 2012, having started as a product support engineer. His appointment enables existing product manager Graham Owen to focus on seeding equipment.

Dan said: “Our goal is to enhance the product management team, and to continue to build on the successes already achieved in supporting our dealers and our customers. And to be able to do this through internal promotion shows the strength of the team and the depth of product knowledge already in place.”

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

Daily and regular checks

By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

With so many different types of application equipment used in agriculture there can sometimes be uncertainty of what needs testing, when and how often. A classic example is for potato farmers who may have a planter fitted with a nematicide applicator, a powder applicator, a liquid applicator for Amistar/Velum and a slug pellet applicator, and any combination of the above.

Reform poultry industry to halt bird flu, welfare charity demands

The poultry industry needs to be reformed in order to stop the spread of avian influenza, a new report released by Compassion in World Farming has warned.

The report – called Bird flu: Only major farm reforms can end it – claims that, contrary to popular belief, wild birds are typically victims of the disease rather than the cause, and it is spiralling out of control due to farming.

The report urges governments to implement a three-point action plan which includes:

Mass vaccination of flocks to slow the spread

Radical restructuring of the poultry industry, to adopt smaller flocks with lower stocking densities and more robust breeds and avoid clusters of poultry farms to reduce the risk of highly pathogenic strains emerging and spreading.

Changing the way pigs are farmed as pigs can act as ‘mixing vessels’ to create new pig, bird and human viruses.

The NGO has written to the UK government and others across Europe, in the UK and the US urging them to work with the World Organisation for Animal

Health (WOAH) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to implement this action plan.

The report says poultry farms create the ideal conditions for the spread of the disease as they give viruses a constant supply of hosts – allowing infections to spread rapidly – and for highly harmful new strains to emerge.

More than half a billion farmed birds have died or been culled globally due to bird flu since 2021.

NARASIN DELIVERS STABLE AND CONTINUOUS COCCIDIOSIS CONTROL

Broiler producers are being encouraged to use a narasin-based coccidiosis control programme throughout the production cycle. Elanco’s poultry technical consultant, Dr James Bishop, explains why uninterrupted use of narasin delivers welfare and production benefits.

Establishing a stable and continuous coccidiosis control programme is key to consistent production performance in broiler units.

Dr Bishop says the best way of achieving this is through uninterrupted use of narasin, which is the active ingredient in both Maxiban™ and Monteban™.

He says although ionophore anticoccidials, such as these products, are a proven tool for fighting coccidiosis – which is estimated to cost the industry globally £8.6bn every year – not all ionophores offer the same benefits.

“Some – such as salinomycin – can have a greater negative effect on broilers, which tends to present as a decrease in feed intake or a period of anorexia in the birds,” explains Dr Bishop.

“Of all the ionophores available, narasin has the least anorexic effect on birds, and as such, it offers effective coccidiosis control without being detrimental to production.”

Dispelling myths

Many producers use narasin until around 26 or 27 days of the production cycle, before changing anticoccidial programme to another ionophore.

Dr Bishop says this is due to a misconception that repetitive use of the same ionophore leads to resistance developing.

“This simply isn’t the case; we’ve used narasin for more than 20 years now and we’ve seen no field-based resistance develop to it,” he adds.

“All ionophores work in the same manner in terms of how they integrate into the membrane of the coccidia, so if you had resistance to one, you’d have resistance to them all.”

Recommended narasin use

To avoid the risks when changing anticoccidial programmes during the production cycle, Dr Bishop recommends sticking with narasin throughout.

He advises using Maxiban past the peak of coccidiosis challenge and finishing birds with Monteban.

Both products contain narasin, however Maxiban also contains nicarbazin and these two active ingredients work synergistically to effectively control coccidiosis during the peak challenge.

“In addition, the narasin allows leakage of sporozoites into the intestine, which enables birds to generate natural immunity to

coccidiosis,” adds Dr Bishop.

“This is crucial as the birds develop immunity to coccidia as they age, it also enables them to cope with any later challenges when they are at peak growth and performance to minimise the impact of coccidiosis on the bird.”

He says a trial comparing Maxiban to a monensin/ nicarbazin programme showed it delivers:

· 5.7% more feed efficiency

· 7.5% more growth

· 1.7% more breast meat

Benefits of finishing birds with Monteban

Using Monteban to finish birds delivers improved results as highlighted in a recent trial, says Dr Bishop.

“A large-scale pen study in Europe comparing the two ionophores found the birds treated with Monteban experienced a 3.3% increase in average daily feed intake, compared to those given salinomycin, and their final body weight was also 150g higher5,” he explains.

Dr Bishop says a stable coccidiosis control programme not only delivers improvements in feed conversion rate (FCR) and better daily liveweight gain, but also more uniformity in the finished birds.

COMMENT: WE MUST EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT POULTRY PRODUCTION

Whilst trying to operate in difficult market conditions, it is evident that poultry producers are still facing mounting pressures from various angles. Whether it be navigating the increasing standards and specifications that they are being asked to meet or the rising scrutiny from lobbying groups.

One such area of increased criticism is related to water quality and the NFU is working hard to ensure that poultry producers are fairly represented in what can be at times a heated debate. It is critical that we find the right solutions and that producers are supported to work towards a common goal of improving water quality. However, it is also vital that decisions are based on sound science and evidence, and we do not allow purely emotive arguments to take control.

One thing I’m always assured by is the professionalism of those working in the poultry industry, always striving to

achieve the most desired outcome and usually with little fuss. One thing that I consider could aid the achievements of the sector in the future is using this collaborative and solutions focussed mindset and expanding it outside of our immediate industry. Working together is key and communicating what we are doing is pivotal to this.

We should never assume that people outside of the industry have a thorough understanding of how poultry meat and eggs are produced, and this is something the NFU poultry board is looking at in terms of engaging with members of the public on various platforms to proudly share the great story of the poultry sector.

Of course, there are areas where individuals will have differing views. From the 1 September the NFU is rolling out a suite of resources to help rebut some of the false claims made and help educate people about poultry production. I hope you will be able to proactively use these resources to spread

all the great messages about British poultry meat and eggs.

As I write this latest column, we are preparing for the final visit for the members on the Poultry Industry Programme. The group will look at the application of various renewable energy sources on farm and with a nod to the future they will be hearing from an insect protein company about opportunities for further integration of insects in poultry production. To round off the programme the PIP members will be hosted at Kelly Turkeys looking at all things turkey related with a focus on the importance as a business of always having an eye on the end consumer. Suzuki GB has recently announced a fantastic new trade-in offer on its range of KingQuad ATVs which will enable customers to get 10% off the RRP of a new Suzuki by trading in any brand of quad bike in part exchange.

Suzuki’s range currently comprises of three versatile models; the KingQuad 500 and 500XP as well as the KingQuad 750XP (XP denotes power steering). These robust utility ATVs are the culmination of years of refinement and their high levels of technical specification and ease of handling give riders confidence on any terrain, making them suitable for several applications including hill and lowland farming, estate management and use on equestrian properties.
