TWO MILESTONES SYNGENTA VARIETIES ADDED TO NEW AHDB LISTS

Two new milestone winter cereal varieties from breeder Syngenta have been added to the latest AHDB Recommended Lists

T

wo, new milestone winter cereal varieties from breeder Syngenta have been added to the latest AHDB Recommended Lists (RLs) for 2024-25 – one winter wheat and one winter barley. New quality winter wheat – SY Cheer New on the 2024-25 winter wheat RL is the Syngenta quality wheat, SY Cheer. Rated as a provisional UKFM (UK Flour Millers) Group 1 variety, this makes it a potential bread-making variety, says Syngenta seeds marketing manager, Kathryn Hamlen. It is also the first new addition to the Group 1 section of the AHDB winter wheat RL since 2017, she points out. “Usefully in the Group 1 category, SY Cheer provides a practical combination of high grain quality, high yields and robust foliar disease resistance,” says Mrs Hamlen. “We see it as a quality wheat made simple. It is an exciting variety,” she adds. “As well as a UK treated yield of 97% of control varieties on the RL, SY Cheer has given consistently high treated yields across all UK regions, only varying by 1% point. “From a quality perspective, its key features include high figures for both Hagberg Falling Number and specific weight

among Group 1 AHDB RL winter wheat varieties – with figures of 299 and 79.5 kg/ hl respectively. A variety that starts from a high quality base can give a useful buffer for protecting milling premiums – for example in wet harvests which can cause Hagbergs in particular, to suffer. “Meanwhile, the disease resistance ratings for SY Cheer, of a 6 against Septoria tritici, 7 against yellow rust and 6 against brown rust, give it a good foundation against these three major UK pathogens. This good disease resistance drives its high untreated yield.” Final UKFM classification on the quality of SY Cheer is hoped for in spring 2024, Mrs Hamlen adds. New hybrid barley with BYDV tolerance – SY Buzzard New on the winter barley 202425 AHDB RL is the hybrid feed barley variety, SY Buzzard, the first Syngenta hybrid on the list bringing tolerance to the damaging, aphid-borne disease of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). “Left uncontrolled, BYDV can reduce winter barley yield by as much as half,” says Syngenta seeds technical expert, Ben Urquhart. “Importantly, as well as BYDV tolerance, SY Buzzard also

maintains the other usual hybrid barley characteristics. These include high and stable yield, good specific weight, suppression of certain grass weeds, early maturity and efficient utilisation of nitrogen fertiliser. Hybrid barley also has flexible end uses – including feed grain, but also wholecrop for either anaerobic digestion or forage. “Yield-wise, SY Buzzard brings a high UK treated yield of 103% of control varieties on the new winter barley AHDB RL, and particularly notable yield performance in the East, at 104% of controls. “It combines these yields with good disease resistance, including the highest resistance rating to net blotch on the 202425 winter barley AHDB RL, of 7, plus good resistance to lodging and a low level of brackling. “It is also early to mature, with a rating of -1. An early harvest can be important for farm cash flow and to provide a good entry for winter oilseed rape." In Syngenta trials where winter barley was inoculated with aphids infected with BYDV, Mr Urquhart says reduced visual symptoms of yellowing and dwarfing, and a lower level of yield degradation, were seen in SY Buzzard compared with a non-tolerant variety.

CONTINENTAL: COUNTING THE COST OF COMPACTION

A wet autumn has left some farmers using min and zero tillage establishment systems concerned about soil compaction.

A

wet autumn has hampered planting and left some farmers using min and zero tillage establishment systems concerned about soil compaction. Waterlogging caused by soil compaction has been attributed to plateauing crop yields by the Potash Development Association, with some losses likely to reach 80%. The PDA suggests that whilst little can be done to change the higher than average rainfalls experienced in many areas of the UK, farmers can take measures to reduce compaction. Machinery and tyre specialists, such as Continental’s Tom Godwin, have been working with farmers to explain the technology available to help reduce the impact of heavy machinery on soils. “Managing tyre pressures using pressure monitoring systems and choosing VF tyres to operate at 40% less pressure than standard radial tyres will make a

significant difference to soil health. This will be particularly prevalent in mintill and zero tillage systems when operators are not turning over land to alleviate or remove compaction,” says Mr Godwin. In a November report the PDA suggests that yield losses due to waterlogging may vary between 15% and 80% in 2023/24, depending on the crop species and growth stage, soil type and duration of the stress, which will result in severe economic penalties. The report says: “Establishment is the most critical period in any annual crop’s life-cycle, as it is the time when the yield potential is set…and that… any management decisions taken from this point onwards only helps limit the reduction in this yield potential.” Mr Godwin echoes this, saying: “Continental has been working with farms for five years, as part of our Stamp Out Soil Compaction initiative, to help improve land management

decisions through the use of more efficient tyres. Our TractorMaster tyres have been specifically designed to reduce compaction by operating at lower pressures and we are always looking for ways to explain these benefits to operators who want to improve soil health.” It is widely accepted that compacted and waterlogged soils block oxygen supply to roots, restrict root growth and reduce nutrient uptake. As the wet weather has taken its toll again in 2023, it is hoped that with investments in tyre technology the severity of the problem can be reduced in the future. “It is easy to say that waterlogging is just the effect of heavy rainfall and gloss over the real issue. Farms that have understood the threat and changed their tyres to minimise the impact of heavy machinery on soil will suffer less now, and in the future, with soil compaction and waterlogging,” he concludes.

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETY IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

T

ransport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

Daily and regular checks By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care. Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity. A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

With nitrogen fertiliser currently costing around £360/ tonne, a 3 tonne spreader is carrying just over £1,000 of product each time it leaves the yard. At a rate of 200kg/ha a spreader with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 20% could be costing you around £240 in lost revenue due to uneven application. The NSTS test aims to achieve a CV of below 10% when a spreader is tray tested and an important factor is being able to SPRAYERS achieve this by testing the

product first. Litre weight, hardness and size range of granules are checked against manufacturers recommended settings and the machine set accordingly. Settings options in spreader apps are a very good guide but variability of product from when it was first tested can mean a small tweak to the suggested settings is needed. The kit required to do the product tests is relatively cheap and can be purchased separately however some spreader manufacturers do supply the kits with new machines.

WHY AVIAN FLU VACCINE ROLLOUT WOULD COST £1.5K PER SHED A MONTH Vaccinating UK poultry flocks for avian influenza has been described as ‘cost prohibitive’

V

accinating UK poultry flocks for avian influenza has been described as “cost prohibitive” because an EU surveillance requirement for swabbing and testing would set producers back £1,000-£1,500/month for every shed housing immunised birds. The true cost of vaccination was revealed for the first time at the British Free Range Egg Producers Association’s (BFREPA) 2023 National Free Range Show in Telford.

Surveillance requirements It would demand monthly visits from a vet to take 60 samples from every shed because each is classed as a separate epidemiological unit; these samples would be tested at a government-approved laboratory.

This means the needs of trading partners would have to be met before a significant vaccine programme could be rolled out.

In addition, producers would have to have their first five or 10 dead birds tested weekly, for the lifetime of the vaccinated flock.

Health and welfare If that does happen, vaccines are likely to be given to dayold chicks in the hatchery.

“In your longer-lived production situations, that is every week from the point that you vaccinate,” Gordon explains.

Although the cost of the vaccine itself and its administration are unlikely to be high, the EU has set a high bar for its trading partners on testing flocks to ensure there are no “silent” infections circulating in vaccinated flocks.

Although Defra supports vaccination “provided it is properly managed, properly administered, we have a good surveillance strategy and our trading partners agree that it is the right thing to do”, he says the department is not yet able to recommend it.

Gordon Hickman, head of exotic disease control at Defra, says surveillance is the “real killer” in relation to the cost benefit of vaccination.

It is likely that producers would pick up the tab for vaccination unless the virus became a threat to human health.

“If we follow the requirements the EU has set out for intraand third-country trading, it is very, very prohibitive in terms of cost,” he says.

Although 91% of eggs produced in the UK supply the domestic market, the UK has important overseas markets for the sale of primary breeder chicks, hatching eggs and meat and egg products.

Two doses may be needed in long-lived birds such as layers, ducks and turkeys, with the second dose given at transfer. Vaccine suitability The biggest challenge with developing a vaccine for avian influenza is that the virus is constantly mutating. This means vaccines developed now may not be effective against future strains. This could cause problems in multi-age sites, because birds may not be vaccinated for the most current strain. However, vet Ian Lowery, a partner of Crowshall Veterinary Services and consultant vet to the British Egg Industry Council, says some vaccines being used by other countries are proving effective.

“There is no perfect vaccine,

ALTERNATIVES TO CHICK CULLING EXAMINED IN NEW REPORT

The Animal Welfare Commitee of the Welsh government has published a report outlining alternatives to culling newly hatched chicks

T

he Animal Welfare Committee of the Welsh government has published a report outlining alternatives to culling newly hatched chicks in the egg and poultry industry.

in the laying hen industry, eg through identifying the sex of the chick embryos before hatching. The report also examines any welfare risks that might result from newly hatched male chicks no longer being culled.

The report looks at culling in different parts of the poultry industry including commercial egg production, chicks and embryos from broiler breeder birds, newly hatched turkey poults and newly hatched ducklings.

The report recommends that government should make the routine culling of newly hatched chicks and turkey poults, due to their sex, illegal as soon as reliable, accurate methods for sexing eggs prior to hatch are available to be implemented in British hatcheries.

The report considers technologies that could help end the culling of newly hatched male chicks

When this happens, the

import of eggs and of female chicks and poults from production systems in which there is routine culling should be made illegal. The report also recommends that any future Government welfare labelling scheme should, when defining its standards, take account of whether, in the production system used, chicks or poults are routinely culled due to their sex. The culling of hatched birds that have been wrongly sexed, and of those with evident abnormalities, should continue to be permitted, the report states.

CONSULTANTS APPOINTED BY NFU TO CARRY OUT RED TRACTOR REVIEW

The NFU has appointed consultants Campbell Tickell to complete the independent review into governance of Red Tractor The NFU has appointed consultants Campbell Tickell to complete the independent review into the governance of Red Tractor, following its unpopular decision to try and introduce a new environmental module. The consultancy advises charitable, notfor-profit and public sector organisations. The review will establish Red Tractor’s decisionmaking procedures and its transparency; examine who is consulted by Red Tractor in its development of standards and look at the balance of this feedback, and how Red Tractor engages

with stakeholders. Having examined the effectiveness of these processes, it will identify any obstacles which need addressing. Through interviews and survey work, the review team will speak to a cross-section of those involved across the Red Tractor process, including farmer representatives, to determine how those processes work currently. In late January, the emerging findings of that review will be presented to NFU Council and the Red Tractor Ownership Body which has agreed to own the findings of the review and also approved the terms

of reference. The final report should be made available in mid-February. In early November, Red Tractor chair Christine Tacon announced that the assurance body would not progress with the Greener Farms Commitment or any new standards until the NFU’s independent review of governance is completed. “The views of our members are very important, and we are sorry that we have been slow to understand them fully,” Tacon said.

DACIA PRESENTS THIRD GENERATION DUSTER

The next chapter in the iconic best-seller’s story. All-New Duster’s design is toucher and more assertive

T

he All-New Dacia Duster opens the next chapter in the story of a model that has grown into a standard-setter in its market. It is an all-round icon, encapsulating everything the Dacia brand stands for: ‘Robust and Outdoor’, ‘Essential but Cool’, and ‘Eco-Smart’. Duster was born in 2010, overhauled for the first time in 2017, and rose to the top by rewriting the SUV rulebook. Duster is a proven success story. In its 13-year-long career, it has been awarded more than 40 accolades, production stands at 2.2 million units and counting, and it is steadily increasing in popularity, ranking as Europe’s best-selling SUV across all segments in the retail market in 2022. Around 1,000 Duster SUVs roll off the production lines at Dacia’s plant in Pitesti, Romania, every day – about one every minute! STRONGER AND MORE ASSERTIVE DESIGN Dacia has reinvented Duster’s design. It still has the striking looks that propelled the previous generations to the top – especially its solid, sturdy SUV character – but pushes them further with Dacia’s new, distinctive design. David Durand, Dacia Design Director, said: “Before even starting work on All-New Duster’s style, we honed its proportions, to find a strong, balanced posture. When you get the proportions right early on, you don’t need artifices to tweak style later.”

Dacia’s philosophy of providing all the essentials applies to the All-New Duster’s design as much as every other model. The design team started simply, by looking at the cabin, bonnet and wings. Then they assembled them into the whole car to give the model a modern, well-built style, with deliberately taut, selfconfident lines. The simple shapes and volumes add to the design’s power, including the sharp, vertical face, chamfered wheel-arch guards, large tailgate and side windows reaching seamlessly from bow to stern. The All-New Duster is shielded with a stylish belt wrapping all the way around it. The side underbody shields connect to the hallmarks, then to the wheelarches, which in turn connect to the front and rear bumpers, making the All-New Duster more robust and ready for the outdoors than ever. The All-New Duster’s design is consistent, it moves with the times and combines its adventurous character with a more sustainable edge. The front and rear skid plates are dyed in the mass, meaning the plastic is already coloured when it is injected to make the part. Not using paint is both good for the environment and for customers, as scrapes and scratches won’t alter the original colour The side underbody shields, wheel-arch guards, hallmarks, triangles on the front bumper,

front and rear skid plates and rear shield tail are made of a sturdy material called Starkle®. Designed by Dacia’s engineers and LyondellBasell’s chemists, the material, which was unveiled on the Manifesto concept car, is up to 20% recycled. Its composition includes white particles that give it a mottled look, which Dacia decided to flaunt instead of painting David Durand continues: “We wanted the exterior and interior design to be consistent. The taut and tough style inside makes you feel properly protected.” This feeling also comes from the high, vertical new dashboard. The shape of the air vents, which resemble the wheel arches, adds to the consistent feel. Like the outside, the inside comes with all the essentials – meaning the features that serve a purpose. A lot of work went into the ergonomics, including the 10.1-inch centre screen positioned in the driver’s field of view and at a 10° angle towards them. The new automatic transmission controls are particularly driver-friendly. The steering wheel’s flattened surfaces at the top and bottom make it exceedingly comfortable to handle. David Durand said: “Duster wouldn’t be Duster without a clever and practical interior that makes daily life easier for users. Everything is designed to make you feel at home, front and back”.

SUBARU: GET READY FOR WINTER

Comprehensive 38-point safety and condition inspection programme, complete condition report with free extras

W

ith temperatures set to drop as we enter the winter months, Subaru (UK) Ltd has launched a Winter Check programme to ensure its customer's vehicles are prepared for the unpredictable winter weather ahead. The comprehensive 38-point check, with an advertised cost to the customer of just £19.99, ensures that vehicles are safe and ready, covering every aspect of the safety and performance of the vehicle. The check also provides the customer with a full condition report, along with a free chamois leather, 300ml screen wash, 100ml Rain Gard, and additional peace of mind.

Along with an exterior bodywork inspection, the operation of safetycritical items such as lights, windscreen, horn, and seat belts are checked and thoroughly evaluated to ensure they are in optimum condition. Under the bonnet, the air cleaner element is inspected, as are clutch and brake fluid levels, windscreen washer fluid is checked and topped up, and all quantities and conditions are measured and recorded. Hoses and pipework are checked for fit and function, with the battery also receiving a health check and ensuring it is securely fitted with good connections. Tyre safety is imperative, so

as part of the check, tyre tread depths are checked and recorded along with overall tyre condition. Wheel nuts are also tightened to the manufacturer recommended setting, with tyre pressures also checked and replenished as required. Darren James, Resources Director, Subaru (UK) Ltd said, "Our Winter Check programme is an opportunity for Subaru owners to prepare for the winter months proactively. With the expertise of our dealership network and professional technicians, the Winter Check will ensure their Subaru is in the best condition to tackle the wintry weather and any unpredictable travelling conditions."
