DEVELON LAUNCHES NEW DX17Z-7 AND DX19-7 MINI EXCAVATORS

Develon (formally Doosan Construction Equipment) has launched the new DX17z-7 zero tail swing and stage V compliant mini excavators DEVELON (formerly Doosan Construction Equipment) has launched the new DX17Z-7 zero tail swing and DX197 conventional Stage V compliant mini-excavators. Both new models provide significantly increased performance, versatility, operator comfort and easier maintenance than the previous generation machines they replace. Both models are powered by the Kubota D902 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing a 20% higher gross power output of 12.1 kW (16.2 HP) at 2400 RPM. The engine also offers a 25% larger displacement and a 29% increase in engine torque to 54.6 Nm at 1900 RPM, translating into high overall reliability and reduced strain on the engine and other components. As well as increased efficiency, the Kubota D902 engine is wellknown for its high reliability, ease of maintenance and long service life. increased durability and robustness. The compact dimensions of both machines make them ideal for work in confined spaces on construction, landscaping and utility projects. Both the DX17Z-7 and DX197 have a 1.75 m boom and 1.03 m arm as standard, with an optional longer 1.23 m arm available for both models. The DX17Z-7 has a cast 180 kg counterweight as standard with an additional 85 kg counterweight for use with the optional longer arm. The tail swing radius in the DX17Z-7 has been reduced by 6.5% to only 645 mm compared to the previous model. The tail swing radius increases to 720 mm when the additional 85 kg counterweight is used. An integral 65 kg cast counterweight is used in both the standard and longer arm versions of the DX19-7. The front assembly in both the DX17Z-7 and DX19-7 is protected by cylinder guards to avoid collisions or any kind of potential damage, with an optimal hydraulic hose layout which runs through and is protected by the boom structure. This reduces the risk of hose damage and failure, minimizing the need for repairs and downtime and increasing equipment

productivity and efficiency. Flexible Hydraulics One- and two-way proportional flow is provided as standard with easy access to the selection valve. Flow is easily controlled via a thumbwheel on the right hand joystick, providing better flow control and increased operator convenience. With quick coupler piping already available on both models, the operator can switch to using a quick coupler by pressing a safety button on the left console - bringing up a warning message on the 5 inch digital display in the cab to notify the operator, who can then simply push a button on the right hand joystick to begin quick coupler work . The DX17Z-7 and DX197 are both equipped with retractable 230 mm tracks, where the width between the tracks can be automatically reduced from 1290 mm to 994 mm and both machines have a foldable blade. This allows operators to adapt the width and dimensions of the miniexcavators to navigate through narrow spaces. This is accomplished by pressing another switch, which allows the operator to use the blade lever to adjust the width of the tracks. The adjustable width

DEALER’S PROGRESSIVE SUCCESSION PLAN PROMPTS MACHINERY AUCTION

Auction to streamline hire fleet ahead of management change. Tractors, telehandlers and implements on offer

P

rogressive business restructure secures longevity of successful dealer. Auction to streamline hire fleet ahead of management change. Tractors, telehandlers and implements on offer at dispersal on 28th February 2024 Agricultural machinery auctioneers Cheffins will conduct a live onsite auction on behalf of Lincolnshire dealer Irelands Farm Machinery, following an effective succession plan that will safeguard the future of the well-respected agricultural dealership, under the guidance of a new management team. Founders Jonathan and Fiona Ireland will step back from day-to-day management of the dealership in April and hand over the reins to an experienced young team, who are familiar with the business and have the enthusiasm required to take it forward. The positive move also involves a restructure of the hire fleet, which offers the business a chance to sell items such as tractors, telehandlers and other machinery via the auction.

16 | AgriNews | February 2024

Jonathan Ireland says the decision to retire has been made easier as the existing team wants to be part of Irelands for years to come. “We are both extremely happy with the decision. Most of the new management team have been with us for several years and have taken responsibility from an early age at the sharp end of the business. They have become experienced in many aspects and, most importantly, they have our trust. “Following this decision, and after much deliberation, we have decided to restructure the hire side of business, streamlining and selling some of our current stock of tractors, forklifts and implements, along with machines that we had planned to replace and update later this year. The hire business will still operate, and the reorganisation of our fleet will be beneficial for the new team.” Established in 1994, Irelands Farm Machinery has successfully grown into a respected dealership, selling major machinery brands such as Kubota, Bunning, Stewart, Kverneland and Spearhead among several others. It has effectively expanded its area over the years to three

depots across Lincolnshire in Carrington, Sutterton and Market Rasen. The sale will include 20 modern John Deere and Kubota tractors that are in excellent condition and range in size up to 250hp. Alongside these machines are four JCB telehandlers; 16 grain and root crop trailers; implements including mowers, cultivation equipment and fertiliser spreaders; and several UTVs. Oliver Godfrey, Director, and Head of Machinery at Cheffins, said the company should be praised on its progressive management to secure a bright future for the three depots. “This is great example of where a clear and well executed succession plan has allowed a successful business to continue supporting its customer base with an experienced new team at the helm. Holding an auction provides an effective way for the business to streamline current stock and offer the new team a fresh start.” More information and the full catalogue can be found on the Cheffins website with the sale taking place on Wednesday 28th February 2024 at Irelands’ Carrington depot in Lincolnshire.

BOBCAT UPGRADES COMPACT WHEEL LOADER PORTFOLIO L75 and L85 updated with features from the top-of-the-range L95

I

n 2021, Bobcat launched the company’s first compact wheel loader (CWL), the L85. In 2022, the company added the L75 value model and in 2023, Bobcat launched its topof-the-range premium model, the L95. As part of Bobcat’s continuous improvement programme based on customer feedback, the company has announced annual updates for the L75 and L85 for model year 2024, allowing owners of the latest versions of these machines to benefit from some of the advanced features that were introduced last year on the L95. Award-Winning Wheel Loaders The Bobcat compact wheel loader range continues to win awards. The L85 was announced as a Product discipline winner in the 2021 edition of the world-renowned iF Design Awards. In September last year, the L75 and L85 won in the Product Design category in the international BIG SEE awards promoting unique and original creative achievements. With the award-winning designs of all three models, Bobcat has ensured that they share the same high level of standard features, providing high operator comfort and

ease-of-operation, including: ∙Heated cab designed around the operator ∙Joystick integrated with the suspension seat ∙Steering wheel adjustable in two directions ∙Key ignition with quick StartStop ∙Automatic parking brake to automatically engage and disengage, as required ∙5-inch digital screen with machine’s vital information managed via the jog shuttle control New features on the L75 and L85 (2024 model year) Power Bob-Tach (NEW) – factory option for L85 This provides a highperforming Bobcat attachment connection for applications in which maximum capacity for load and carry by bucket and pallet fork is not as important as connectivity to multiple Bob-Tach compliant attachments shared on the same job site with Bobcat skid-steer and compact track loaders. Heated Air Suspension Cloth Seat (NEW) – factory option The cab seat now offers a higher back rest with a head rest, together with air suspension set-

up, lockable floating and left-hand adjustable arm rest, providing a new level of operator comfort on the L75 and L85. The cloth surface of the seat with heating added improves the operator’s comfort all year round − in both cold and hot weather. The seat also includes a sensor to indicate operator presence and to enhance safety (by inactivating auxiliary flow). Advanced Attachment Control (Improved) – standard configuration in L85 / factory option in L75 Bobcat has improved the advanced attachment system by adding new features that make the operator’s life easier. The new flex-drive feature allows the operator to change the engine’s RPM by manual throttle, independently from the foot throttle, at any time during operation. With this change, Bobcat has also provided auto-idle functionality when the machine is not in use for four seconds to reduce fuel consumption. Automatic Ride Control (Improved) – factory option To further enhance driving comfort at higher speed as well as with higher loads. February 2024 | AgriNews | 17

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETY IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

T

ransport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

Daily and regular checks By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care. Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity. A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

BE CLEAR OF CROP PROTECTION RULES TO AVOID FALLING FOUL

Be clear of crop protection rules to avoid falling foul of the transition from winter to spring

ith arable growers in the UK rushing to make up for lost drilling time, it’s easy to forget that 31st January marks the last official day of the winter drilling window. As such, any crops drilled beyond this date will be defined by the CRD (the Health and Safety Executive’s Chemical Regulations Division) as spring-sown and must comply with the relevant crop protection regulations. “Any crops sown on or after 1st February in the year of harvest are considered spring crops, irrespective of the variety being drilled,” explains Jonny Oosthuizen, Herbicides Product Manager for ADAMA UK. “Unfortunately, because of the wet winter, a lot of growers throughout the UK still have winter wheat seed in the shed and, now that conditions have finally started to improve, are rushing to get as much of this into the ground as quickly as possible.

products labelled as being approved for spring-sown crops.” This changing of the seasons narrows the crop protection options available to control fresh flushes of weeds. “Some herbicides aren’t permitted for use on spring wheat, even if the actives themselves may be used via other products,” Jonny says. “That might come as a surprise to some growers, especially those who haven’t traditionally grown spring wheat before. Understanding the rules is therefore essential to ensure herbicide programmes don’t fall foul of the transition from winter to spring cropping. “Fortunately, there are still plenty of options available to ensure spring-sown cereals remain protected and ahead of the curve in terms of weed competition,” Jonny adds.

“For example, product’s such as HURRICANE (500 g/L diflufenican) and TOWER (250 g/L chlortoluron + 40 g/L diflufenican + 300 g/L pendimethalin) are approved for use on spring wheat and barley and have been proven to offer value for money as a reliable means of controlling some key grass and broad-leaved weeds. Likewise, ANTHEM (400g/L pendimethalin) is also approved for use on spring barley, although it is no longer approved for use on wheat drilled from 1st February onwards.” If in doubt about which products can and can’t be used on or after 1st February, check each product label carefully to ensure it is approved for use on spring crops. Alternatively, seek professional advice from a qualified agronomist or visit www.adama.com/en for more information.

“What many might not be aware of as we move into February is that any crop protection products registered only for use on winter wheat can’t be used on crops sown after 31st January, even if the seed is technically a winter variety. Instead, these crops can only be treated with February 2024 | AgriNews | 19

ouMatic Group (consisting of the brands BouMatic, SAC andHokofarm) introduces the next generation of Gemini, the milking robot. The firstgeneration robot was launched in 2011. Over the years the model has been optimized with new benefits to take it to the next level. Therefore, the new milking robot will be launched with the name of Gemini UP to help reinforce the new level of performance that can be achieved for milk production. The Gemini UP has been developed with the focus on the best milking practices, cow comfort and lowering energy consumption. On top of the unrivaled, well known Gemini robot features, such as the unique rear attachment approach and the unobstructed open view, the upgrade contains a vast list of new cutting-edge features. Optimized milk path, according to BouMatic Group milking philosophy One of the major upgrades, at the heart of the milking robot,is the optimized milk 24 | AgriNews | February 2024

path, resulting in simply better milking. The milk flows now per quarter, without any restrictions, into the milk receiver. The new quarter milk line has an internal diameter of 19mm, which is

unprecedent in the market.

BouMatic and SAC flows are milked optimally in the Gemini UP. This proves that our robotic system follows the same tried-and-true method as conventional milking. Improved energy consumption in a

modular system.

Furthermore, the Gemini UP features This leads to maximum an improved energy vacuum stability and a consumption. This is mainly continuous milk flow without due to the new mechanical any blockages. Even cows circulation cleaning, which with the highest milk consumes less water at a Gemini UP – Double box, lower temperature. The available from BouMatic and washing unit is placed in SAC Gemini UP – Single the external technical room box, available from and is centralized regardless

BOUMATIC GROUP INTRODUCES THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEMINI MILKING ROBOT BouMatic: Introducing the Gemini UP, a distinctive solution for any herd size of the number of robots in a dairy farm. So, in case a farm has numerous robots, one washing unit manages all cleaning cycles. The same counts for the vacuum system and buffer tank. These are now centralized into one unit. More Geminis can be attached to these central units. This means that the system is modular and adaptable to all kinds of configurations, from small family farms to big commercial farms. Cutting edge vision system Gemini UP attaches cows fast and accurately thanks to machine learning technology implementation. This breakthrough technology now looks at udder imagery gathered from a wide range of cows and has allowed attachment and ultimately the throughput to rise-up to the next level for your dairy. The vision system helps to continuously adjust knowledge about different,

individual cow features such as udder and teat shapes and colors leading into a quicker and more reliable milking. BouMatic

herewith introduces AI into the milking industry. Full robotics solutions for all farm types “Continuing development and innovation is what BouMatic Group represents. We are always working on the optimization of our systems, taking the feedback from our customers and dealers into account. This new milking robot is thoroughly tested, and we believe it offers excellent performance and cow comfort, “says Uwe Osthues, Chief Commercial Officer at BouMatic.

“The new features are too numerous to sum up,” completes Rik Schoenmaker, Sales Director at SAC. “But one of the most important advantages is that we can now offer a full robotic solution to all types of dairy farmers, from small farms with less then 240 cows up to big commercial farms with 2000 cows. Mainly thanks to the abovementioned centralized systems and the recently added Gemini MAX, Herd milking system. In this system a group of cows are guided at fixed times to the robotic parlour”. COMMENT: WE ARE GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS

Vaccinating UK poultry flocks for avian influenza has been described as ‘cost prohibitive’

B

y Gary Ford, chief executive, British Egg Industry Council

I am very proud and pleased to be writing my first article for Poultry Business magazine in my new role as CEO of the BEIC after serving as Deputy from mid-August 2023. At the BEIC Council meeting held at the BEIC offices, London on 6 December, Andrew Joret retired from his long-standing role as BEIC Chairman, after 23 years as CEO, Mark Williams stepped into the Chairman role and I took on the CEO role. The four months in the Deputy role has given me the opportunity to get out and about and to engage with many stakeholders. This engagement – which has been very informative – will continue over the coming weeks and months and, in reality, will be an important and ongoing part of my role as I build on Mark and Andrew’s solid foundation. Engagement was a key part of my role at the NFU when I was Chief Poultry Adviser and is equally important to me in my new role. Collaboration is also a key part of the role. I firmly believe that we, industry representative groups, can achieve more working together than the sum of our parts. It is too 28 | AgriNews | February 2024

easy to work in silos, whilst doing a good job, but working together can amplify and enhance our effectiveness be that in policy work, for example, government polices around disease control or animal welfare, or in building a more resilient sector that is able to better face into current challenges or those challenges that have gone quiet or have simply not yet materialised. I am pleased that there have already been several examples of collaboration recently – the joint BEIC/BFREPA letter regarding the new laying hen welfare standards published by the RSPCA in midNovember and the BEIC/NFU Cymru/BFREPA letter to the Welsh Assembly calling for the 16 week housing consultation for free range layers to be published. Looking forward, we are also collaborating with BFREPA and the NFU regarding a Lion producer roadshow series of meetings to be held in February and March. The programme will involve around ten meetings spread throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The meetings will be held in the early evening and will be an opportunity to further outline Version 8 of the Lion Code as well as an update on Avian Influenza. The AI element of the meetings will include hearing from a

producer that has first-hand experience of going through AI as an Infected Premise (IP), sharing their lessons learnt. It should not be forgotten that version 8 of the Lion Code of Practice simply consolidated and amalgamated the various amendments that had been made to version 7, as well as pulling together the bird welfare elements into their own sections. In fact, there are few new standards and those are there to protect both site operators as well as the Lion scheme. It is now over four months since version 8 of the Lion Code came into force on 1 September and the roadshows will be an opportunity to give feedback on what the Lion auditors, NSF, are seeing on-farm. If you can make the Lion producer meetings, please come along as this is a two-way process – I firmly believe that working together we will continue to strengthen the Lion which is important as we all benefit from a strong Lion. 77% of consumers that we surveyed in June 2023 commented that the Lion brand stands for a guarantee of quality. This is something that we need to continue to work hard to retain – and build on – and, as part of this, it is important that all Lion registered sites are audit ready all of the time, 24/7, 365 days of the year.

POULTRY FARMER FINED £28,000 AFTER BREACHING BIRD FLU HOUSING ORDER

A poultry farmer from East Yorkshire has been fined £28,000 after pleading guilty to four offences relating to an avian influenza outbreak

A

poultry farmer from East Yorkshire has been fined £28,000 after pleading guilty to four offences relating to an avian influenza outbreak on his premises and to operating a slaughterhouse without Food Standards Agency (FSA) approval.

at East Riding of Yorkshire Council found slaughtering and meat production activities had expanded such that they were in excess of the permitted limit, above which approval and on-site supervision by the FSA is required.

Daniel Mathison, 49, a partner in Mathison (Farmers) Leven, which owns the brand Yorkshire Ducks and Geese, appeared at Beverley Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 31 January, in relation to animal health and food safety offences.

There had also been a breach of restrictions preventing the movement of anything onto or from the premises whilst waiting for AI test results, as the business had continued to supply meat to a local restaurant on 13 April, 2023. A further breach of the ongoing restrictions imposed to minimise the risk of disease spreading from the farm occurred on 31 May, 2023, when old insulation was removed from the premises.

Mathison was fined £4,000 per offence, and ordered to pay an additional £6,000 towards costs and a £2,000 victim surcharge, totalling £28,000 to be paid within 12 months. The court heard how, despite compulsory housing, biosecurity and record keeping measures being in place, officers from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) found the end of a duck shed was fully open, and no records of bird deaths had been kept when they visited the farm on 12 April, 2023, to investigate a possible AI outbreak. AI was confirmed in the flock on 13 April, 2023. Follow-up investigations by officers from Public Protection

would not have happened if compulsory housing measures to ensure separation from wild birds had been complied with. It is fortunate the outbreak did not spread further when the disease control restrictions were breached. “In addition to the catastrophic consequences for this business, the measures required to control the outbreak and prevent it spreading further significantly impacted on other local livestock keepers and the community. The outbreak also resulted in substantial financial and resource costs for Defra, APHA, the council and other partner agencies involved.”

Aled Edwards, Head of Field Delivery England, Animal and Plant Health Agency. added: During sentencing, the “This case demonstrates how magistrates said these actions our robust enforcement and could have had wide reaching our effective collaboration and serious consequences for with local authorities can other farmers and the local bring those guilty of breaches community.
