SUSTAINABLE YIELD GROWTH - A GAMECHANGER FOR THE SDGS?

A Massey Ferguson 8735 has received a specially commissioned wrap and cab modifications to match new trailed woodchipper

A 70% increase in global demand for food by 2050, set against urgent biodiversity and climate pressures, requires an unprecedented transformation of our food system. This challenge can in part be mitigated by reducing food losses and waste, and through dietary change. On their own, however, these measures will not be enough. Promoting sustainable yield growth provides the most powerful solution to meeting the growing food needs of billions of hungry people, while protecting biodiversity and improving the health of the ecosystems on which we all rely. If real progress is to be made toward the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris climate agreements, the technical and technological innovations at the heart of sustainable yield growth must be given the highest priority, argues retired UK economist Dr Derrick Wilkinson.

Population growth, rising incomes, and increasing urbanisation mean food demand will continue to grow and change over the coming decades. The World Bank estimates that global demand for food will increase by 70% by 2050. Already, an estimated two billion people suffer from moderate or severe levels of food insecurity, and most of the new demand for

food will come from regions already experiencing hunger, malnutrition, and poor access to food – mainly in SE Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

WRI suggest that at current rates of yield increase, meeting this historic challenge would require nearly 600 million more hectares of agricultural land –over three times the total EU agricultural area. Biodiversity and climate change challenges must also be addressed. Food production must become more environmentally sustainable and climate neutral.

Actual demand for food, and the environmental costs of its production, can be mitigated somewhat by reducing food losses and waste, and through dietary change. On their own, however, these measures will be insufficient to meet this urgent challenge.

A simple two-step evaluation procedure may be useful to identify the transformational pathways that can ensure global food demands are fully met in an environmentally sustainable way.

The first step is to develop sustainability impact reporting criteria and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of proposals for improving sustainability and alignment with net-zero targets. Obviously these metrics cannot be exact but, if well done, they could

provide useful relative orders of magnitude, and allow proposed interventions to be ranked. Syngenta Group's criteria for sustainable investing in the Good Growth plan provide a good start.

The next step is to triage potential solutions in terms of when they can be implemented.

1. What can be done now? – these include what can be done immediately, and includes incentivising and de-risking greater uptake and scaling of existing and emerging technologies.

2. What might be done soon? – these are the actions that are realistically possible within, say 2- 3 years, and include incentivising focused R&D of technologies, products, services and organisational structures.

3. What is going to take longest to do – these are proposals that are unlikely to play a significant role before 2030, including changing human preferences and behaviours.

Prioritising pathways according to how effective they are and how quickly they can be implemented should help target resources to those actions and investments that can deliver the greatest transformations most quickly.

Farmers in England can boost their chance of receiving 50% grant funding on a range of animal health and welfare equipment

Farmers in England can boost their chance of receiving 50% grant funding on a range of animal health and welfare equipment by discussing their application with their vet.

MILTON KEYNES, U.K., Thursday 14th March 2024MSD Animal Health, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, N.J., USA

(NYSE:MRK), today announced that farmers in England who wish to apply for grant funding on a range of animal health and welfare equipment can improve their application scores by submitting evidence that their claim has been discussed with their veterinary surgeon.

Details of the Rural Payment Agency’s latest round of Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FEFT) grants has recently been announced in England, with funding available to help farmers buy a range of items that improve productivity, manage slurry and improve animal health and welfare.

The application window for productivity and slurry management items is already open (the current window runs from 6 March to 17 April 2024), with the application dates for animal health and welfare items due to be published shortly.

NEW PRECEA TRAILED PRECISION AIR SEEDER IN 6M WORKING WIDTH

Amazone has ubtroduced an additional model in its trailed air seeder product line

AMAZONE has introduced an additional model in its trailed precision air seeder product line. The new Precea 6000-TCC, in a working width of 6 m, complements the high-performance capabilities of the 9 and 12 m models shown at last year’s Agritechnica.

A key feature of the Precea 6000-TCC is the option of either the Central Seed Supply seed delivery system or with individual seed hoppers on each sowing unit. In addition, AMAZONE offers both variants with a large single-chamber fertiliser hopper with a capacity of 3,000 l together with a central, easily accessible fertiliser metering system. The 8 rows can be set to row widths of 70 cm, 75 cm and 80 cm. Row widths of 45 cm and 50 cm based on 12 rows will also be available in the medium term, in order to round off the product range for use in narrower row crops such as sugar beet, rape or soya beans. Effective use, with high outputs in the season, is now possible with tractors in the medium horsepower range from 110 kW (150 hp).

Central Seed Supply for higher work rates

The central seed hopper option provides a capacity of 850 l for increased area coverage. The large and easily accessible hopper opening allows very easy and quick filling from big bags. This reduces the turn-round times.

The seed conveying is self-regulating in this system. An air stream transports the seed from the central hopper via the delivery unit to the reception units above each sowing unit. These act as a temporary store. The air stream, and therefore the seed delivery, is automatically paused when the maximum fill level is reached in this reception hopper. The air flow, and along with it the transport of the seed, restarts as soon as the fill level in the reception unit drops.

Individual seed hoppers for flexible working

A 70 l seed hopper is mounted on each sowing unit in the individual hopper variant.

This system offers the advantage of for a quick seed change on farms with a variety of crops or for contractors with varying customer requirements.

Filling from small seed

containers and emptying out during frequent seed changes can be completed in a very short time and work can quickly continue on the next job without any problems. In addition, microgranular applicators with a capacity of 17 l can be fitted, thereby increasing flexibility, even on smaller fields.

Precision sowing units for any soil type

AMAZONE puts its faith in the PreTeC mulch sowing coulter with over-pressure singling for the seed distribution. In this respect, the seed is pressed onto the singling disc under air pressure and is accurately singled by the three stripper fingers working against the holes in the disc. The stripper fingers are automatically adjusted via SmartControl to relieve the stress on the driver.

The electrically-driven singling disc rotates in relation to the forward speed and transports the seed to the propulsion channel. The contact pressure is then interrupted and the seeds are fired past the optical seed monitor into the propulsion channel, placed precisely in the seed furrow and embedded in the soil by the catcher roller. Uniform plant distribution and high field emergence are obtained, even at high working speeds of up to 15 km/h. Two large

NEW PRECEA TRAILED PRECISION AIR SEEDER IN 6M WORKING WIDTH

The new Precea 6000-TCC, in a working width of 6m, complements the high-performance capabilities of the 9 and 12m models

carrying rollers and a high coulter pressure guarantee the exact placement depth.

The SmartForce automatic coulter pressure regulation provides the right pressure setting for the singling units, even in changing soil conditions. This means that the placement depth is consistently maintained on both heavy and light ground. Due to the well-thought through design of the centralised singling unit, the singling disc and the singling pressure chamber turn as one.

The power requirement is kept low as a result of this rotating seal, which is why the electric singling system is operated exclusively via the tractor electronics across every row.

Soil-friendly tramline management

The transport axle can be telescoped in and out to ensure the crop is kept damage-free by not driving over seed rows. The axle width is thereby adapted to the row spacings and the tyres run between the seed rows. As an alternative, the hydraulic tramline offset can be used to displace the seed rows. Or a combination of the two. This prevents reconsolidation

of the soil in the seed row and the full seed rate can be applied to ensure the maximum yield potential. The compact design and comfortable folding to a transport width of 3 m ensure safe driving on the road and quick change from field to field.

MultiSwitch - individual row shut-off for seed, fertiliser and also micro-granules

Precise switch-on and switchoff of the sowing units is very important in order to prevent over- or under-sowing in critical areas such as on the headland. Individual row shut-off for the seed provides exact placement. Each row is controlled individually and automatically. On the one hand, this saves seed, as fewer overlaps occur, and on the other hand, gaps are prevented. In addition, AMAZONE offers individual row shut-off for fertiliser directly on the distributor head. This provides advantages, particularly on odd-shaped headlands and in field corners. Double fertiliser application is prevented, with the result that the plants can grow and ripen uniformly. The extremely precise fertiliser application effectively reduces application rates, thereby cutting costs and protecting the

environment.

Easy machine operation with AMAZONE in-house software Clear machine control and quick intervention are very important in conjunction with high forward speeds.

Furthermore, it is essential that the machines can be quickly and reliably calibrated with frequent changes of seed or fertiliser. The specific machine software developed by AMAZONE has maximum functionality combined with user-friendly operation.

Precea 6000-TCC with central seed hopper and Central Seed Supply.

Precea 6000-TCC with seed hoppers mounted on the seeding units. Illustrations, content and technical data are not binding and may differ depending on the level of equipment. Country-specific road traffic regulations apply and must be complied with, meaning that special approval may be required. The permissible axle loads and total weights of the tractor should be checked. Not all the listed combination options are possible with all tractor manufacturers.

THE NEW AMAZONE CATAYA SPECIAL ECOLINE HARROW-MOUNTED SEED DRILL

Amazone is offering the new Cataya Special EcoLine as an attractively priced entry into the world of Amazone combinations

AMAZONE is offering the new Cataya Special EcoLine as an attractively priced entry into the world of AMAZONE seed drill combinations, thereby rounding off the lower end of the Cataya harrow-mounted seed drill product range. The new version follows in the footsteps of the time-tested AD harrow-mounted seed drill.

The last AD 3000 Super rolled off the production line at the end of last year. Its success story began more than 30 years ago in 1988, when the AD became part of the modular system for seed drill combinations. The new Cataya 3000 Special EcoLine comes in a predetermined specification at a special price but which still offers high performance and reliability in this segment.

The harrow-mounted seed drill has a working width of 3 m and features a 650 l seed hopper with a large opening for quick and loss-free filling. The 24 maintenance-free, RoTeC single disc coulters, with a row spacing of 12.5 cm, ensure precise seed placement. The sowing disc and furrow former create the ideal seed furrow profile to ensure the optimum seed placement into the soil. The Control 10 depth guidance disc or the Control 25 depth guidance roller prevents the soil from sticking to the sowing disc, thereby ensuring that the pre-selected sowing depth is precisely maintained.

The Exact harrow is supplied

as standard. It provides even seed coverage and also ensures blockage-free operation when mulch sowing with large amounts of straw.

The AmaLog+ in-cab terminal aids the driver in changing the tramline rhythm.

Other functions include field and total area hectare meters, fill level control and speed monitoring of the mechanical drive. Rear lights ensure safe road transport, even at night.

SmartCenter for the calibration

Calibration is carried out via the centralised SmartCenter settings centre located on the left-hand side of the machine. All the adjustments are clearly displayed on a sticker here. The metering unit is preselected via a handle which adjusts the bottom flap to the various seed types and seed rates.

The driver can set the machine to calibration or sowing via a second lever. This adjusts a flap in the metering unit which conveys the seed either to the coulters or to the calibration trays. The two calibration trays can be easily removed from underneath the SmartCenter. The calibration kit is completed by the inclusion of a sturdy folding bucket and weigh scales with an illuminated digital display. Both are stored under the hopper lid when not in use to save space.

The land wheel can remain in the parking position during the calibration procedure.

Convenience with the Precis metering system

The new Precis metering system with a high level of operational comfort and reduced set-up times is at the heart of the Cataya Special EcoLine. The shutter slides, with 2 locking positions, facilitate a quick changeover from normal seed to fine seed and vice versa. The integrated outlet funnels in the seed hopper that result in minimum residual amounts are also new.

They prevent bridging between the outlets and facilitate easy cleaning of the tank. The system also includes centrally adjustable calibration flaps that make it possible to switch the seed drill quickly and easily over from sowing to calibration mode. The seed shaft is driven mechanically via the land wheel drive.

Everything in one handflexibility with QuickLink

Thanks to the QuickLink quick release coupling system, the seed drill can be easily and quickly combined with the KE Rotamix rotary harrow or the KX Cultimix and KG Cultimix rotary cultivators without the need for tools.

10 YEARS OF TWINPACT DOUBLE PLUNGER TECHNOLOGY

KUHN Farm Machinery is celebrating 10 years since the launch of its revolutionary TWINPACT double plunger design for its large square balers.

Kuhn Farm Machinery is celebrating 10 years since the launch of its revolutionary design via a triangle rod. The sections compact the bale in series during a complete plunger cycle, with greater force applied per surface area, while avoiding peak loads on the machine.

The split double plunger allows us to produce bales of greater density without increasing the stress on the machine and is why more users are investing in a KUHN large square baler.”

The technology has transformed the operation of its SB 1290 iD balers, allowing operators to produce high density, uniformed bales without increasing the load or strain on machine and operator. The result is 25% higher bale densities in dry crops compared with conventional balers.

KUHN’s innovative TWINPACT design splits the plunger into upper and lower sections connected

KUHN’s grassland product specialist, Rhodri Jenkins, says the innovative design is still a key attraction for users. “The low power requirement from the TWINPACT design, and the reduced ‘nodding’ impact that is synonymous with weighty plungers on big square balers, are features that users require on modern machines.

Despite the heavier bales, the load on the machine is comparable with a conventional 120 x 90 (4 x 3) baler, which eliminates the need for an oversized driveline, flywheel and main frame, along with a higher horsepower tractor to power the baler.

INVESTMENT IN FODDER BEET CAN MAXIMISE RETURNS

Fodder beet should be a serious consideration for livestock farmers this spring

Fodder beet should be a serious consideration for livestock farmers this spring, given its potential to be the highest yielding of UKgrown forage crops and the cheapest per unit of energy produced.

So says ProCam’s Rhys Owen, who outlines a number of key management points and recent advances in agronomy that will help to ensure success.

“Achieving its typical potential of around 25 tonnes of dry matter (DM) per hectare, fodder beet can work out at as little as 5-6.5p/kg DM, which can be about a third to half of the cost of grass silage, or compares with about 8-10p/kg DM for kale,” Rhys explains. “Fodder beet is a crop that requires investment and attention to detail. However, done right, it can be the most cost effective forage crop available.

“It is a multi-purpose crop, in that it can be grazed in situ or lifted. Fed in situ, it has the potential to extend grazing seasons, or to be utilised as part of an out-wintering system for cattle or sheep.”

Fodder beet is drilled earlier than most other forage crop options, with the optimum sowing period being midMarch to the end of April, says

Rhys, so should therefore be established before the greatest risk of dry periods that can hamper later-drilled crops. In all cases, site selection is the first consideration, he says, then it’s important to prepare the right seedbed.

“Light and medium bodied soils that are free draining are best, with a pH of 6.5 or higher. For optimum establishment and crop growth, create a seedbed that’s fine and firm in the upper 5-7cm, with a more open structure below to allow root development.

“If you are intending to graze the crop in situ, it’s important to plan ahead of drilling in order to optimise the layout. If planning to transition cattle on to beet, leave a 6m headland to allow them space. Also, drill in a direction that enables the fence to be positioned along the rows, which simplifies allocation of the crop to all stock. If the field is sloping, always aim to graze downhill.”

Maximising returns from fodder beet also depends on choosing varieties based on trials performance and their suitability for the required end use, adds Rhys.

“For grazing cattle, use a proven medium DM variety like Geronimo, whereas if it’s for sheep or young cattle you’ll

achieve better utilisation by going for a variety that sits out of the ground more, with a lower DM, such as Lactimo. In all cases, I’d recommend using primed (pre-germinated) seed, as this will result in a faster and more even establishment, with the crop reaching canopy closure more quickly.

“Primed seed is an important advance in fodder beet growing. It should be used alongside a number of other significant agronomic improvements in order to achieve full potential.

“For example, where a crop is destined for grazing, fertiliser application and disease control should be geared towards maintaining green leaf growth longer into the season, boosting overall yield and protein content,” he says.

“Fodder beet has a total nitrogen (N) requirement of about 200-240kg N/ha, compared with 120-150kg N/ ha for traditional beet. But with the right inputs at the right time, fodder beet can out-perform any other forage crop and be your most cost effective autumn and winter forage.”

MINIMISE CROP STRESS FOR SPRING BARLEY SUCCESS

Safeguarding yield and quality will be pivotal for profitability in what could be a competitive spring barley grain market this harvest

Safeguarding yield and quality will be pivotal for profitability in what could be a competitive spring barley grain market this harvest.

In particular, proactively minimising stress on the crop after the wet winter could be key.

That was the message from an industry briefing organised by ProCam recently, and featuring the company’s agronomy experts from England and Scotland.

“Spring barley needs to hit the ground running,” explained ProCam regional technical manager for East and South East England, Justin Smith. “But it’s also a crop that’s very sensitive to stress. Soils and seedbeds compromised by wet weather aren’t the perfect entry for it, and crops on heavy land originally destined for winter wheat could be hardest hit.

“Minimising nutrient stress and stress caused by poor rooting will be key.”

To minimise nutrient stresses, ProCam regional technical manager in Scotland, Alistair Gordon, urged growers to begin with soil testing that gives information on the levels of soil nutrients actually available to the plant.

“Manganese, copper and zinc are typical trace elements that

need addressing in spring barley,” said Alistair. “Lack of copper and zinc can reduce yield by restricting grain numbers in ears. I’ve had situations where good doses of these have been applied, but harvest grain analysis still showed they were lacking.

“I normally add nutrition products twice – with the postemergence herbicide and with the first fungicides – as two lower doses are better than one hit. As well as applying nutrients, I think it’s a good idea to stimulate rooting so the plant can better access nutrients and moisture from the soil.”

To boost rooting and help early utilisation of nitrogen, Alistair said he has had success with an early dose of the foliar-applied phosphite and pidolic acid treatment, Incite, with independent evaluation showing lateral root length boosted by over 40%.

“We’ve also been looking at the seaweed and amino acidbased biostimulant, Zodiac, with results showing similar root length benefits, but with amino acids providing good stress mitigation properties.

“If you find yourself with a thin spring barley crop with a poor plant stand, either from difficult seedbed conditions or a low seed rate, a biostimulant can also improve tillering, helping

to fill in the gaps.

“By alleviating stress, you also aid the plant’s natural disease defences. Ramularia symptoms, for example, are triggered by stress.”

After the winter rains, Alistair said crops could be shallow rooted – disastrous if the summer turns excessively dry. “That’s when improved rooting to scavenge soil moisture becomes important. Too often, biostimulants are applied after crops are already suffering drought stress, but they need applying before then to see a benefit,” he added.

Justin Smith said applying a suitable plant growth regulator (PGR) can also improve rooting plus stem strength, although PGRs need tailoring to individual fields.

“As well as the variety’s lodging risk, factors such as fertile sites, exposed sites, and higher nitrogen (N) rates also increase lodging pressures. If applying less N for lower grain N malting markets, lodging pressure should be lower. However, later-planted spring barley can be at greater lodging risk because it races through its growth stages, creating weaker stems. Because it’s harvested later, it’s also exposed to later adverse weather,” Justin said.

STIMULATE SATURATED CROPS TO RECOVERY

Following one of the wettest winters on record, many cereal crops have suffered root stress which could lead to failed crops

Following one of the wettest winters on record, many cereal crops have suffered root stress which could lead to failed crops. However, biostimulants can help struggling crops get back on their feet by helping to restore root systems, improve tiller health, stimulate root and shoot growth, and overcome abiotic and biotic stresses.

“Prolonged soil saturation impacts rooting and can cause roots to die off. However, using a silicon biostimulant to strengthen the root can improve the plant’s ability to obtain nutrients and recover from the lack of oxygen caused when soils are saturate,” explains agronomist Mike Stoker from biostimulant specialist Orion FT. He suggests that silicon improves root nutrient uptake and how efficient the plant is at converting nutrients.

“Providing a winter wheat plant, that has been growing in waterlogged soils, with

supplementary silicon, changes its tolerance to stress and improves leaf and tiller growth, which will set the plant up to photosynthesise more effectively in spring and summer,” adds Mr Stoker.

East Anglia had its warmest and wettest February on record, with an average of 106.4mm of rainfall, beating the previous record of 95.2mm set in 1916, and a mean temperature of 8.2C, surpassing the previous record of 7.6C set in 1990.

Plants that have sat in wet soils over winter, and into spring, will have ‘lazy’ roots, suggests Mr Stoker, who also identifies that a spring or summer drought is still probable based on previous years weather patterns.

“Weather extremes are becoming more common and it would not be extraordinary for cereal crops to soon be experiencing drought, as many did in June last year. Lazy roots fail to

reach deep enough in these conditions to find sufficient moisture and so the plant suffers both having been starved of oxygen in saturated soils and of water in periods of drought. This will have a significant impact on yield if not addressed,” he says.

Once absorbed, silicon is deposited within and between the cells of the plant and it also encourages crops to absorb beneficial elements such as nitrogen, calcium, and zinc.

“Silicon can be applied at every crop growth stage using a variety of application methods. This season it is likely to be best utilised as a foliar spray but it can also be applied direct to soil, as a seed treatment or via fertigation. For those struggling to deal with weather extremes, biostimulants offer a costeffective and sustainable option to getting back on track by strengthening plants’ natural defences,” he concludes.

Spreader testing as important as having a sprayer tested. With nitrogen fertiliser currently costing around £360/ tonne, a 3 tonne spreader is carrying just over £1,000 of product each time it leaves the yard. At a rate of 200kg/ha a spreader with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 20% could be costing you around £240 in lost revenue due to uneven application.

The NSTS test aims to achieve a CV of below 10% when a spreader is tray tested and an important factor is being able to achieve this by testing the

SPRAYERS

product first. Litre weight, hardness and size range of granules are checked against manufacturers recommended settings and the machine set accordingly. Settings options in spreader apps are a very good guide but variability of product from when it was first tested can mean a small tweak to the suggested settings is needed. The kit required to do the product tests is relatively cheap and can be purchased separately however some spreader manufacturers do supply the kits with new machines.

When the tray test is carried out, 47 trays (for 24 metre

tramlines) are laid out across the full width of spread and the results entered into an app to calculate CV. Adjustments can then be made if necessary but often because the product has been tested and the machine inspected, the target of below 10% can already be achieved.

Test Centres across the UK allow easy access to getting your spreader, or any pesticide application equipment, tested. For more information go to the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk

CUSTOM COLOURED TRACTOR AND CHIPPER CREATES ONE-OFF OUTFIT

A Massey Ferguson 8735 has received a specially commissioned wrap and cab modifications to match new trailed woodchipper

AMassey Ferguson 8735 has received a specially commissioned wrap and cab modifications to match its new trailed woodchipper and continue raising funds for two cancer charities.

The MF tractor and Mus-Max chipper have been purchased by Martin Wiles, who owns CFTS Ltd, a utility, forestry and clearance company based in the Midlands. He commissioned his dealer, KO Machines in Coven, to colour match his new tractor to the distinctive blue and pink livery of his recently purchased chipper.

The original colour scheme of the chipper was added by Mus-Max dealer Ben Price in 2021 and, after Martin purchased the MF 8735 to run the chipper, he wanted to continue Ben’s work in raising awareness for Cancer Research UK and Young Lives vs Cancer.

“When in the rear position, the armrest and screen are folded back into place and the chipper controls are lowered down towards the operator for comfortable use. It proves that although forestry operations aren’t a common choice for MF machines, with some modifications, these tractors can be equipped to offer users long term reliability and a comfortable working environment.”

chipper, the cab controls required a fundamental redesign. Darren Winstanley, sales manager at KO Machines, describes the modifications:

Martin is delighted with the final outcome and says the project wouldn’t have been possible without several other companies being involved. “OCS Group UK Ltd, Ben Price, KO Machines, and Allan James Financial Services have all supported the project from the moment I told them about it, and it proves what can be done when working together.”

Martin explains why he wanted to do it. “Cancer affects everyone, and my business wouldn’t be where it is now without my Nan, who passed away from cancer. We need the chipper for most of our clearance sites across the country, and I didn’t want to just put any tractor on the front of it. Getting the tractor wrapped, and changing the colour of the bonnet

“We installed a new 360º seat base so the user can turn to face the rear of the cab and operate the chipper. The multifunction armrest and screen turn with the seat and fold up as the seat turns. The major change in the cab has been replacing the small rear window that is used to view the pick-up hitch and install a solid box allowing space for the operator’s feet and foot

The value of the woodchip from the combinations first job in Cambridge for OCS Group UK Ltd is being donated to the charities. Landowners on future sites where Martin is working are encouraged to donate some or all the value of the chip, after chipping and haulage costs, to the two charities. Further donations can be made by scanning the QR code on the chipper or via this Just Giving link.

BREEDING SUCCESS: INSIDE JOICE AND HILL

Joice and Hill is helping to advance Britain’s egg-laying sector through a combination of investment and innovative thinking

Joice and Hill is helping to advance Britain’s egglaying sector through a combination of investment and innovative thinking. By Michael Barker Britain’s egg sector is only as good as the quality of its layers, so it is reassuring to get an insight into the depth of work that is helping to take the industry to the next level.

At the forefront of that work is Joice and Hill, which won the Hatchery of the Year category at the 2023 National Egg & Poultry Awards in recognition of its sizeable investment in both its hatchery facilities and research and development, carried out in the UK and globally by its parent company Hendrix Genetics.

Peterborough-based Joice and Hill distributes the Hendrix Genetics range of egg-layer breeds in the UK and Ireland, currently supplying around 37% of market demand. The business sells a range of brown egg layers – including world-leading breed Bovans Brown – alongside the highly productive white egg layer the Dekalb White and a series of speciality hens. In addition to the hatchery, the business also manages the parent stock farms that provide

the hatching eggs, which is a key part of the operation that gives the company vital control over its own supply chain.

Managing Director Nick Bailey has been with the business since 1996, and in charge since 2008, and he says the overall combination of traits offered by the Hendrix birds, from production numbers to ease of management, robustness, and recovery from disease, give them their unique selling point. That’s down to the amount of investment that goes into genetic selection, breeding technology and field-based testing, he adds.

Beyond that, there’s one clear factor that is increasingly winning customer loyalty and market share for Joice and Hill – extended laying cycles. “Since the beginning of modern poultry breeding, geneticists have focused on hens which lay at a higher rate up to 60-70 weeks of age,” Bailey explains. “Having already extended to 80 weeks, Hendrix Genetics took the view that even testing and selecting to 80 weeks was no longer going to be sufficient, particularly with the US talking about banning forced moulting. We thought that the only reasonable way we could improve the birds more was to extend

that testing range up to 100 weeks. And that’s what we’ve ended up with now – birds that can lay reliably on a good feed conversion, with excellent shell quality, all the way to 100 weeks.”

Achieving that 100-week milestone might have seemed unrealistic a decade or two ago. Pedigree, pure line birds, such as those maintained by Hendrix Genetics in France and the Netherlands and backed up by flocks around the world, are selected to make the next generations and real progress is being made. “At the moment we are adding approximately one week of production every year from these efforts,” Bailey explains, “and the geneticists that I talk to think that within their lifetime, flocks going on one cycle to 120 weeks of age is a realistic proposition. When I first started in the industry, people were depleting at 65 to 70 weeks, so that’s a that’s an unbelievable gain.”

It is the white birds that are showing the most promise, and while 100 weeks has been achieved with brown flocks, 85-90 weeks is still more common. That inevitably leads to the question of whether the market should continue to be steered more towards white

BREEDING SUCCESS: INSIDE JOICE AND HILL

Joice and Hill is helping to advance Britain’s egg-laying sector through a combination of investment and innovative thinking

eggs, and Bailey believes the supermarkets are already “pretty sold on the white egg story”, pointing to the fact that Lidl in the Netherlands has already switched to 100% white and British retailers are starting to get on board. He believes that the UK market will ultimately see a mixture of brown and white, but with white having a growing significance over time.

There are multiple benefits to longer bird cycles, according to Bailey – not least from the sustainability angle. “If you take a flock to 100 weeks rather than, say, 75, which has been the normal brown production length, that means in a five-year period you only have to buy or rear three lots of pullets rather than four. And that’s a huge impact on the carbon footprint of the chain, and also a massive saving to the clients who have to turn around the units one less time in five years and buy one flock less.”

Sustainability is certainly something that Hendrix Genetics as a group is putting a great deal of thought into. The company is a member of Code-EFABAR – a voluntary code of practice in support of responsible breeding – and invests time

and resource into looking at ethical breeding practices and the conservation of genetic resources. “It’s about breeding birds that are healthy and full of vigour at the end of production,” Bailey notes.

The company’s other key sustainability stream focuses on its footprint on the world, and to that end a monitoring process is in place whereby all of Hendrix’s global operations report on feed and energy consumption, as well as any antibiotic use, which is something Bailey stresses is kept to an absolute minimum.

Investment in sustainability is just one of the core focuses of attention for Hendrix Genetics, which prides itself on innovation and continuous development. One current project is HenTrack, which examines individual bird movement and location patterns to bring genetic selection of cage-free laying hens to the next level. The current phase of the project sees $2.7m of funding used to promote cage-free housing for laying hens and improve their health and welfare through new breeding approaches. The idea is that by remotely monitoring hen behavioural patterns, assessment of relevant traits can be carried out without

disturbing the birds, with data able to be collected from individual hens in large groups in a way not possible before.

There are also projects underway focused on liveability, with the company keen to improve outcomes in areas such as keel bone strength, while a further area of focus centres on in-ovo sexing. Hendrix is currently trialling two different types of technology in two of its hatcheries, in response to law changes in Germany and France banning the culling of male chicks at birth. Bailey says that “if you look at the detail, then it [the technology] is not quite there yet” but expects progress to be made going forward and for a move ultimately towards in-ovo sexing as early in the process as possible. All of that is at a group level, but back in the UK there have been investments aplenty in recent years too. The hatchery has been completely renovated over the past decade, with all the old incubation equipment replaced and updated. New, single-stage Jamesway incubators and hatchers were installed that are much more energy efficient than the old equipment and provide much better hatchability results and better chick quality.

SCOTLAND CONSULTS ON BANNING ENRICHED CAGES

A consultation on banning the use of cages to house laying hens for egg production has been launched in scotland

Views will be sought on phasing out the use of enriched cages, which offered more room to nest, roost, scratch and rest than the previously used battery cages that were banned in the UK in 2012.

Over 1.1 million hens were housed in cages in Scotland as of February 2024.

Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie said: “As we committed to in our Programme for Governments, we want to improve the welfare of laying hens to ensure their confinement does not negatively impact their normal behaviours.

“Significant progress has already been made in recognising the importance of animal welfare – both in government policies and the demand from the public in the choice they make when shopping. If implemented, the ban would be another example of Scotland leading the way in improving the welfare of animals by being the first UK nation to ban the practice.

“We’ve seen the European Union put forward legislation to prohibit using cages for all farmed livestock, with Luxembourg and Austria already banning them and

others phasing them out. In the coming weeks will also call for evidence on the use of cages in the gamebird and quail egg and meat sectors ahead of consulting on phasing out cages in those sectors in due course. I would encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to take part to help us shape how we protect the welfare of laying hens.”

The consultation will run for 12 weeks, until Tuesday 25 June 2024.

Gary Ford, British Egg Industry Council Chief Executive, said: “The BEIC has serious concerns about a proposed ban on colony cages in Scotland.

“The welfare of laying hens from all systems of production is of primary importance to the UK’s egg producers. In the UK, around a quarter of eggs consumed are laid by hens kept in enriched colony cage systems, meeting demand for affordable, nutritious, highquality food, and providing a vital option for a large section of the population, particularly during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

“In addition to consumers, producers in Scotland who export to the rest of the UK

will also be disadvantaged by the proposed changes.

“Unless Scotland is planning to close its borders it is likely that, in the event of a cage ban, retailers and foodservice operators will resort to importing caged eggs from outside of the UK, potentially with significantly lower welfare standards. There are also trade deals in place with countries that still use battery (‘barren’) cage systems, illegal in the UK since 2012. With a substantial proportion of the UK’s eggs produced in Scotland, a ban could lead to job losses and a direct impact on its economy, as well as reducing the number of eggs in the market putting additional pressure on free range supply.

“British egg producers are responsive to market needs and will produce what people want to buy. Currently, consumers are able to choose eggs from different production systems, which are all clearly labelled, and we strongly urge the Scottish government to continue to allow Scottish shoppers the choice to buy the eggs that most meet their requirements.”

CHICKEN WORM BURDENS INCREASE AS WET WEATHER CONTINUES

With the prolonged wet weather in the UK, free range egg producers are being reminded to test regularly for worn burdens

With the prolonged wet weather in the UK, free range egg producers are being reminded to test regularly for worm burdens and implement appropriate worming programmes.

Director and vet at Sandhill Veterinary Services, Laura Langstaff, said, “We’re seeing higher worm burdens in freerange laying hens recently as the mild, wet weather provides the perfect conditions for the worm cycle.”

Production losses, shell quality issues, enteritis and in some cases, mortality, can all be consequences of worms. To prevent this, producers should be testing for worms regularly and implementing robust worming programmes which cover their flocks all year round.

Langstaff said: “As worm egg counts are performed from a relatively small sample of faeces, it’s recommended these are completed in conjunction with post-mortem worm examinations to fully understand levels within the flock.

“Worm eggs can remain infective in both the shed and on the range for long periods, this means burdens can be transferred from one flock to the next and explains

why worm monitoring is still important during a housing order,” she said.

Alongside standard preventative biosecurity measures, Langstaff encourages producers to carry out wet cleaning procedures in poultry houses.

“There’s been an increasing trend towards dry cleaning, but this isn’t going to be successful in removing worm burdens present from previous flocks,” she said.

“Wet cleaning is a much more effective method as it removes the grease layer, allowing the disinfectant to penetrate more effectively. Selecting a suitable disinfectant which is effective against worm eggs is crucial.

“And don’t forget the range –improving drainage, keeping grass short to allow sunlight to infiltrate and breaking up areas of compacted soil can all help to keep worm levels in check.”

Langstaff says a targeted worming programme is a must. “Following thorough testing via worm egg counts and post-mortems, producers can then work with their vets to put together a worming programme which is right for them,” she explains.

Jeremy Marsh, Elanco layer business manager, reiterates

the importance of regular monitoring and selecting an appropriate administration method.

“Producers should be monitoring for worm burdens every six to eight weeks to maintain effective worm control,” he said.

“During periods of high rainfall, producers may have to consider the administration method of the wormer. For example, in water wormers could become less effective, if birds have been drinking from puddles rather than medicated water lines.”

Marsh stressed the importance of targeting worms at all developmental stages. “By only tackling worms at the adult stage of the lifecycle, you will only address the top layer of the issue. The larvae will still be developing and therefore you’ll never get on top of the problem,” said Marsh.

“Flubenvet the only wormer that tackles a broad-spectrum of worms, at all stages of the lifecycle, makes it easier to get on top of the rapid reproduction issue and reduces the impacts of worms on bird health and productivity.”

YORK HOUSE SCHOOL USES POLARIS RANGER TO MAKE A BIG IMPACT

Customer use of the Polaris Ranger is diverse and far-reaching, ranging from agriculture to forestry

Customer use of the Polaris RANGER is diverse and far-reaching, ranging from agriculture and forestry to wildlife sanctuaries and conservation; but sometimes the stories that are the most heartwarming are those where a small decision has made a huge impact on someone’s happiness.

Enter York House School and their decision to use the RANGER to improve a student’s educational experience.

Located in Hertfordshire, York House School is a leading co-educational independent school for girls and boys aged 3 to 13, set in a historic listed building alongside modern purpose-built school facilities nestled within a beautiful 50acre site. A year ago, the Estate Management team chose to purchase a Polaris RANGER XP 1000 Crew from their local Polaris dealer, Taylors Tools, for a variety of reasons, the most significant being its ability to safely transport a student with a medical condition to outside areas of the school; allowing him to join his classmates in the fields for outdoor education for the first time.

Jason Jaekel, Estate Manager said: “The Polaris has truly transformed a particular pupil’s experience here at York House School, which is something we’re very proud of. With specific risk assessment criteria that need to be met before he can be transported in a vehicle, we meticulously tested a range

of UTVs and found that, during our test of the Ranger, the safety equipment built into the Polaris was extremely comprehensive. The RANGER XP 1000 has a three-point safety belt which is vital, the seats are also very comfortable, and it rides smoothly over off-road terrain, so we are now able to safely and confidently escort this student, and any other students that need it, around the site.”

York House School prides itself on providing a broad and enjoyable education for its pupils, encouraging wonder and adventure throughout the learning experience; a sentiment that is similar to Polaris’ own “Think Outside” motif. Now, with the introduction of the Polaris RANGER, York House School continues to ensure all of its students can enjoy its extensive facilities—including its multi-use sports pitch and smallholding with rescue animals—as well as its huge range of co-curricular activities and clubs.

The RANGER XP 1000 Crew model features 33 centimetres of ground clearance, along with 27.9 centimetres of suspension travel on the front and rear, smoothing out even the most severe ruts and rough terrain. There’s also a three-mode throttle control switch with standard, work and performance settings for optimal throttle control and performance. Inside, the RANGER Crew features contour-fit bench-style seats for up to 6 riders, as well as electronic power steering and a premium tilting steering wheel.

Outside of student transport, the RANGER has a number of other uses that aid the school environment, including the ability to showcase the school grounds to prospective students and parents with space for up to 6 riders, and offering a transportation option for parents, grandparents and guests in any weather.

Jaekel continued: “We’ve fitted a full cab with a roof, doors, and a heater system, so we can take guests on tours in all weather conditions and temperatures, maintaining a high standard of comfort whilst showcasing our fantastic facilities. Not only that, we have previously driven parents and grandparents to the far fields so they can watch their children or grandchildren playing sports from a safe and warm environment – the tipout windshield helps to see everything from the comfort of the cab.”

When it comes to estate work across the 50-acre site, the RANGER comes into its own, easily accessing every metre of the school’s grounds thanks to its on-demand all-wheel drive. In contrast, its Versatrac Turf mode feature that unlocks the rear differential and drives just one rear wheel means that the Estate Management team can drive on the sports grounds without marking or tearing up the grass, also meaning the team can access these areas in all conditions without concern; even in the wet.
