By editing the software at source, the process is safer, and the engineer has greater control of engine parameters. “Any of the 150 agents can install an agricultural remap and are trained before joining the network to understand the process but also spot mechanical signs that may prevent a remap being fitted. Only machines in good health can be remapped as reliability is still the main requirement for users,” concludes Gareth.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR LATE DRILLING IN WET CONDITIONS
“Many farmers will have concerns about drilling progress and what to do if initial plans have fallen through”
W
ith several areas reeling from the impact of Storm Babet and now Storm Ciaran, many farmers will have concerns about drilling progress and what to do if initial plans have fallen through. Frontier Agriculture’s northern combinable crop production specialist, Ben Frost, looks at some of the options for getting a crop in the ground and off to a good start, despite the challenging conditions. “The recent storms brought exceptional levels of rain in a very short window and it has saturated some parts of the UK,” says Ben. “The impact on soil conditions is severe in parts, with some fields already destined for spring cropping as a result. Crops that were drilled recently have also been affected by waterlogging and significant runoff, causing ruts and even loss of seed.” In the event of a crop failure, often the alternative is to drill a spring crop once conditions improve. Ben continues: “Redrilling in the late autumn and into winter may be possible on some land types, but there are important considerations to make around seed rates and variety choice. “Growers drilling wheat from November onwards should increase seed rates to over 400 seeds/m2. When calculating rates, it’s also important to consider a lower establishment percentage.” In very poor conditions, Ben notes this can be as low as 50%. Varieties to sow in late autumn/
winter If a crop is drilled well in January, it’ll likely perform better than a crop forced into a poor seedbed in November. “The key thing is not to be led entirely by calendar date. Don’t rush to sow crops now given conditions are as they are,” says Ben. ‘Drill date’ trials carried out by Frontier have shown that drilling a suitable winter wheat variety through to February is still likely to out-yield a spring wheat variety drilled in the same period. “However, if the date for safely drilling winter wheat has passed, I recommend switching to a spring variety of wheat or change cropping plans.” Varieties such as KWS Extase, Skyfall, Champion and KWS Dawsum have all shown to be good performers in a later drilling slot. Skyfall in particular has the longest drilling window, which lasts to the end of February. Ben adds: “If drilling late into the season, I recommend the seed treatment, Vibrance Duo. It has been proven to consistently protect yield across multiple seasons, and in a delayed drilling situation it has delivered a 0.34t/ ha increase in yield, providing faster and improved emergence.” Cultivation considerations The impact of recent weather also means assessing the effectiveness of herbicide performance and subsequent applications. Ben explains: “If a crop with an applied herbicide fails but you’d
like to drill another crop after it, you need to make sure you follow the label requirements to avoid any residual herbicides getting into the following crop. If it’s a risk, you may need to deep cultivate or plough your fields. “On wet soils, ploughing would be the preferred and more practical option. Direct drilling may be an option for some farms but again, if you choose to do this the label requirements on a previously applied herbicide must be considered.” Late-drilled crops that have been direct drilled can potentially suffer from open slots and smeared soil in the bottom of the coulter row. This can cause water pools which can eventually result in seed loss to slugs or water damage, as well as reducing overall herbicide safety. “Although broadcasting seeds can be tempting in extreme circumstances, a Frontier trial in 2020 showed a 1.7t/ha yield drop using this method over drilling,” says Ben. Late-drilled crops require extra TLC in the spring Rolling a crop after drilling is an unlikely option if a crop is sown in November onwards. However, rolling in the spring is much more likely when conditions should be more favourable. “Rolling should be done before the crop reaches Growth Stage 30 in order to aid root-to-soil contact and encourage further tillering too. Doing it any later will potentially damage the crop,” says Ben.

BRITAIN’S ORGANIC PRODUCERS MUST NOT BE LOCKED OUT OF REVOLUTION
Britain’s organic producers must not be locked out of the gene editing revolution
M
omentum is building to permit gene edited crops in organic agriculture within the European Union. Meanwhile, Britain’s organic farmers risk being left behind by the campaigning stance of UK organic sector bodies, whose dogmatic rejection of these more precise breeding technologies may not reflect the views of members on the ground, warns Norfolk arable farmer and registered organic processor, David Hill. In July this year, the European Commission published its proposals for regulating plants developed using new genomic techniques (NGTs) such as CRISPR gene editing. This followed a report published by the Commission in April 2021, reviewing the impacts of a July 2018 ruling by the European Court of Justice that all NGT plants should be regulated in the EU as genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Commission’s review determined that the EU’s 20-year-old regulatory framework for GMOs was not fit-for-purpose to deal with more recent breeding technologies such as gene editing. It also advised that regulatory reform for NGTs was needed to support EU agriculture’s response to urgent climate, food security and environmental challenges.

Central to the EU’s deregulatory plan is the re-classification of NGTs into two distinct product groups. Category 1 products, which could have occurred in nature or through conventional breeding, will be exempt from GMO regulations, with no separate requirements for risk assessment, traceability, labelling or co-existence. Category 2 products, incorporating changes which could not have occurred naturally, will continue to be subject to GMO-style risk assessment.
without strict labelling and traceability requirements to support zero tolerance of gene editing.
The EU definition of Category 1 products is very similar to the Precision Bred Organisms (PBOs) established by the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act in England, and also mirrors the regulatory classification adopted in other countries, such as Canada, Japan, Argentina and Brazil.
This is a view shared by organic dairy farmer Lone Andersen, Vice President of the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, who believes organic farmers need access to innovation, including new genomic techniques, to be sustainable.
But while the planned regulatory changes may be aligned on both sides of the Channel, the response from the organic lobby could hardly be more at odds. Here in the UK, a more streamlined and evidencebased approach to regulating these new genetic technologies has met with outcry and outrage from organic bodies such as the Soil Association and Organic Farmers & Growers, whose leaders claim the interests of organic producers will be put at risk
On the Continent, the reaction is much more mixed. So, for example, Danish organic body Økologisk Landsforening (Organic Denmark), has publicly questioned the proposed ban on NGTs in organic farming, suggesting that this position should be reviewed with gene editing techniques expected to become widespread in conventional plant breeding.
Meanwhile Thor Gunnar Kofoed, another leading organic farmer who chairs the seed working group of the European farmers association COPACOGECA, recently suggested that, as an organic farmer himself, and in conversation with other organic producers, “they all want to use NGTs”, because they know that being excluded from new varieties used by conventional farmers will make them increasingly uncompetitive. In Brussels, progress towards the adoption of the Commission’s plans has moved surprisingly quickly.

BRITAIN’S ORGANIC PRODUCERS MUST NOT BE LOCKED OUT OF REVOLUTION Britain’s organic producers must not be locked out of gene editing revolution Following publication of the Commission’s draft regulations in July, many Brussels commentators confidently predicted that the proposals would become delayed and bogged down by political opposition in the European Parliament and Council of Ministers, and that more red tape and restrictions would be added. In fact, last month’s draft report from the European Parliament’s Environment Committee, which has lead responsibility for scrutinising the Commission’s plans, has proposed an accelerated timeline for MEPs to deal with the file, with the aim of finalising the Parliament’s position during the January 2024 plenary session. Significantly, the Environment Committee report includes proposed amendments which would permit the use of Category 1 NGT plants in organic production, and which would remove the Commission’s plans for mandatory labelling of Category 1 NGT seeds, instead focusing on publicly available information, such as variety registers, to support transparency and traceability objectives. Interestingly, the Estonian government recently announced that it not only backed the Commission’s NGT proposals, but would also support moves to allow gene
editing in organic agriculture, noting that in its consultations on the plans: "Estonian organic producers were not opposed to the draft regulation." These developments in recent months suggest a major split in the EU organic lobby, based on a recognition that gene editing is set to become commonplace in conventional plant breeding, and that it could deliver major benefits to organic producers. As East Yorks mixed farmer Paul Temple recently pointed out, if the organic lobby maintains its dogmatic opposition to gene editing, “organic growers may be left with older genetics gradually becoming more and more outclassed, more prone to disease and pest infestation, further widening the productivity gap between organic and non-organic.” Here in Britain, I am equally concerned that a growing rift is emerging between the views expressed by those in charge of the organic sector bodies, and the grassroots opinions of many organic producers, for whom gene editing is seen as ‘manna from heaven’ as a means of closing the yield gap between conventional and organic production. As a registered organic processor, I do not recall being asked for a view on whether UK organic standards should prohibit the use of these
faster, more precise breeding techniques. How can organic standards seriously endorse the random mutagenesis of entire genomes using chemicals and nuclear radiation, while prohibiting the use of these more targeted approaches? As pressure builds to permit gene edited crops in EU organic agriculture, Britain’s organic farmers risk being left behind if the campaigning stance of UK organic sector bodies does not reflect the views of members on the ground. Surely it is time for Britain’s organic industry to have an open-minded discussion, focused on the potential use of these techniques to align with the objectives of a more productive, resilient and competitive organic sector? KUBOTA INTRODUCES BATTERY-POWERED, RT COMPACT ARTICULATED LOADERS John Deere is holding a carrers event in September to help resettling military personnel take next step in career

ubota (UK) Ltd has launched two models of battery-powered RT compact wheeled loader. Badged as the RT210-2e and RT220-2e, the new models offer a zero-emission, near-silent solution for those needing a clean-fuel alternative for working indoors; around livestock; or in environments where ultra-low noise levels are required. Power for the RT ‘e’ versions is supplied by a 48-volt DC electrical system that is equipped as standard with a 260Ah lithium-ion battery pack. As an option, buyers can choose from two larger battery packs offering 390Ah and 520Ah capacities, offering longer run-times between charging. Typically, run times can be from two to eight hours, depending on the size of battery pack and the application. On-board charging affords a 230-volt/40-amp capability and a five-hour charge time, with a more powerful 60-amp unit available as an option, reducing the charge time for the standard 260Ah battery to just four hours. For those able to make the most of a three-phase electricity supply, there are two models of 400-volt Super Charger available to further shorten the charging times – 12 | AgriNews | November 2023
the most powerful 300-amp version can fully charge the largest 520Ah battery pack in just 90 minutes. An adaptor is also available to enable the RT ‘e’ models to be recharged via an electric car charging point. Both Kubota RT ‘e’ models are equipped with an integral energy recovery system that automatically puts power back into the battery pack when the loader decelerates, or travels downhill, contributing to energy conservation. The drive motor, which is fitted to the rear axle to transmit power to all four wheels is a 135-amp electric motor packing a 6.5kW punch. Travel speeds can be 0-5km/h; 0-12 km/h and 0-20km/h. A more powerful 250-amp electric motor is used to operate the hydraulic system with a power rating of 12kW. Both electric motors are certified
IP54, offering protection from dust and water, with in-built protection against overheating. Operating weights are 2,200kg and 2,350kg respectively for the RT210-2e and RT220-2e when equipped with the standard 260Ah battery pack. Models differ only in their front-end configurations, and as a result, tipping loads in the straight-ahead position are 1,480kg for the RT210-2e, and 2,054kg for the RT220-2e. Compact in size, the RT series offers a low overall height of 2.3m, a minimum overall width of 1.04m (RT210-2e), and a maximum hinge pin height of 2.82m (RT210-2e). Either model can be specified in a cab or canopy configuration. Kubota’s battery-powered RT210-2e compact loader, with canopy, is priced at £56,000.

D
espite increasing concerns regarding the spread of herbicideresistant ryegrass, effective control can still be achieved where a stacked and sequenced programme of herbicides is applied accurately and in favourable conditions. That’s according to ProCam’s Rob Adamson, who explains that success is reliant on a careful balance of cultural controls, correct herbicide choice and timing, and adequate soil moisture. “Effective levels of ryegrass control have become harder to achieve since the first herbicide-resistant strains of Italian ryegrass were detected in the UK in 1990,” Mr Adamson explains. “Since then, growers have been facing an uphill struggle, with an increasingly diminished toolbox of effective herbicides, the efficacy of which is extremely condition dependant. “For example, last year’s warm and dry conditions, paired with a migration back towards early drilling, meant many pre-emergence treatments ran out of steam and were ineffective against later germinating seeds. Across the country, we saw worrying levels of ryegrass 16 | AgriNews | November 2023
because of a lack of soil moisture which prevented herbicides from working as they should. This is a perfect storm in areas worst affected by resistant ryegrass such as Essex and South Yorkshire.” Even in a good year ryegrass can still be tricky to control, not only because resistant strains are becoming increasingly common, but also because ryegrass produces a huge number of highly dormant seeds which germinate continuously throughout the year. “But there is hope,” Rob explains, “with ProCam trials showing that even high populations of ryegrass with tough resistance profiles can be managed successfully in winter wheat.” The trials, which purposely targeted the challenging ryegrass populations of Essex and South Yorkshire (to determine how various herbicide stacks perform under the worst pressure possible), confirmed that control is achievable, but also reinforced the importance of herbicide stacks and the use of a diversity of herbicide modes of action. “Historically, flufenacet has been the core component of ryegrass programmes,
however there are increasing instances of poor efficacy,” Rob explains. “A diversity of other molecules used in mixture or sequence is therefore essential, and a diverse mixture can effectively overcome the resistance. “The registration of Luxinum Plus (cinmethylin) last year provides a useful alternative and gives growers and agronomists a reprieve from the reliance on flufenacet,” Rob continues. “And our trials – which are also being carried out next year – clearly showed that cinmethylin is inherently the strongest molecule on ryegrass. “However, a lot still depends on the availability of soil moisture to enable cinmethylin to be effective, and because ryegrass germinates continuously, one application of one active ingredient will not provide season-long protection. An over-reliance on cinmethylin will also expose it to the risk of resistance developing, which we must work hard to avoid.” Growers should therefore consider a sequence of treatments, utilising both this new molecule alongside a range of other modes of action.

Daily and regular checks By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.
One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.
In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

ith so many different types of application equipment used in agriculture there can sometimes be uncertainty of what needs testing, when and how often. A classic example is for potato farmers who may have a planter fitted with a nematicide applicator, a powder applicator, a liquid applicator for Amistar/Velum and a slug pellet applicator, and any combination of the above. In the new protocols due out later this year, Red Tractor will be making it clearer what equipment needs testing annually and the timescales for all other types. Essentially, SPRAYERS boom sprayers over 3 metres wide and granular nematicide

applicators have to be tested every year from new, for all other equipment the first test is due before the machine is 5 years old, then to re-test every 6 years. As with the legal requirements, Red Tractor sets out the minimum requirements for timescales for testing and the decision is regularly taken to reduce the gap between tests, especially the liquid applicators on planters which are applying high value products and, like all other applications, need to go on accurately. Equipment testing affects all users of professional pesticides and NSTS endeavor to inform everyone
of the requirements. This is especially important in the amenity sector, to ensure sprayers used on golf courses, sportsgrounds and in public spaces, are all meeting the same standard as those used in agriculture and other sectors. NSTS provide operator check lists for a range of machines, all of which can be found on the website www.nsts.org. uk These are designed to assist professional operators in keeping their machines in full working condition during the spraying season to help reduce downtime, and also to record calibration results, which should be carried out on a regular basis.

rocery price inflation has fallen below 10% for the first time since July 2022 and now sits at 9.7% for the four weeks to 29 October 2023, according to the latest data from Kantar. Take-home grocery sales over the same period rose by 7.4% compared with last year. Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said: “Grocery price inflation has finally dropped into single digits after 16 months of double digit growth, marking a big milestone for the British public and retailers. While the drop to 9.7% is positive news and something of a watershed, consumers will still be feeling the pinch.” Fraser McKevitt continues: “Retailers continue to look at ways of softening the blow for shoppers and slowing the rate of price rises. This has included upping the ante on promotions – every single one of the grocers increased the proportion of sales through deals versus last year which is something that has only happened on one other occasion in nearly ten years. Consumer spending on promotions has now hit 27.2% of total grocery sales – the highest level we’ve seen since Christmas last year. This is a big gear shift from 24 | AgriNews | November 2023

Sainsbury’s was the fastest growing traditional supermarket this month, with sales up 10.1% over the 12 weeks to 29 October compared to last year. Growing ahead of the market, the retailer now holds 15.2% share, up from 14.9% last year. Britain’s largest grocery chain Tesco gained share for the fourth consecutive month to take 27.4% of the market, an increase of 0.4 percentage points versus a year ago, as year on year sales growth reached 9.5%.
Lidl was again the fastest growing retailer this month with sales over the 12 weeks up by 14.7% and share up by 0.4 percentage points to 7.6%. Fellow discounter Aldi sat beside Waitrose as one of only two grocers to increase its number of shoppers year on year, attracting 207,000 more customers than last year. Aldi and Waitrose grew sales by 13.2% and 5.4%
Morrisons has now been back in growth for seven months, with sales in the latest period up by 3.2%. It now holds 8.6% of the market and Asda stands at 13.6%. Co-op’s sales have grown by 5.2%, the fastest rate since March 2021. Its market share stands at 6.0%, though in baskets that are less than £20 this figure jumps considerably to 16.9%. Iceland now accounts for 2.1% of the market, as sales increased by 2.6% over the 12 weeks. Online-only grocer Ocado’s market share has risen to 1.7%, while its yearon-year sales have grown by 12.6%.

FIRST POULTRY HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ARE ANNOUNCED Derek Kelly has spent seven decades in the poultry industry and has been an important cog in its growth
D
erek Kelly has spent seven decades in the poultry industry and has been an important cog in its growth. Now, he has devised a Poultry Hall of Fame to honour the industry’s big players There are very few people who have seen the poultry industry develop over the past 70 years – or been a key part of the way it has developed – so much as Derek Kelly. The chairman of KellyBronze Turkeys, which he founded in 1971, is now 93, and started his career in the 1950s, when the modern poultry industry was in its infancy. Derek’s achievements are many – he resurrected the traditional bronze turkey in the 1980s from obscurity when more commercially successful white turkeys were taking over the industry. He built from scratch the business that bears his name and is now run by son Paul, with grandson Toby also working within the business. Before starting his own business, he ran three major poultry breeding companies – Arbor Acres UK, Bernard Matthews Turkeys, and River Rest UK – and travelled the world.
Award at the National Egg & Poultry Industry. He handed day to day running of the business to his son Paul in 2008, but is still heavily involved in both the turkey business, and a cattle breeding project that is his personal passion. But anyone who thinks at 93, Derek might be ready to put up his feet, is very much mistaken. He has a new project underway, one that he first conceived back in the 1960s, when his work with Arbor Acres regularly took him to the United States. There the industry had devised a Poultry Hall of Fame. It was set up in 1953, run by the American Poultry Historical Society, with the status given to a maximum of five recipients every three years. The basis for selection is the effect their accomplishments have had on the north American poultry industry, and the recipients photographs and biographies are placed on display at the annual International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, which draws 30,000 visitors. New people would be inducted every three years, says Derek. “It was quite a buzz to see who would be inducted.”

He was awarded an MBE in 1998 for services to the industry, and has spent numerous decades giving his time to poultry boards and industry bodies at home and abroad to share his knowledge and expertise. In July, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement
He thought at the time we should have something similar in the UK. “The idea literally stayed there for 50 years,” he says. “I was so busy building up my own business.”

Then in the winter of 2022, Derek finally had some time on his
hands. “The ironic thing is I only got to the bottom of my in-tray during last year’s AI epidemic.” Like many other businesses, Kelly’s had to deal with several outbreaks of AI among its turkeys. They decided to kill the turkeys early and freeze them for Christmas to avoid any more disastrous losses. This meant Derek found for the first time ever he had time on his hands in December. “I finally had time to think about the hall of fame and I thought, I should resurrect that.” After speaking to friends and contacts in the industry, he agreed with Howard Birley and Stephen Lister, both of whom are on the organising committee at EPIC, that the hall of fame would be launched as part of this year’s conference in November. One aspect that appealed to Derek of collaborating with EPIC was that the organising committee would provide “a ready made panel of judges” to approve new entrants. In America, says Derek, inductees had to go through a daunting process of giving a presentation on their achievements to each of nine judges before their application could be voted upon. The first inductees of the hall of fame will be presented this November. Seven people have been approved to kick things off, and despite his modesty and misgivings, the panel decided Derek should be among them. With 93 years of memories, Derek has in depth knowledge of them all.
