LAMMA AT 40: 4 DECADES OF SUCCESS

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Lamma, which has grown to become Britain’s most successful agricultural show.

T

his year marks the 40th anniversary of LAMMA, which has grown to become Britain’s most successful agricultural machinery show. As the celebrations begin, Simon Henley takes a look back at the event’s illustrious history. In January 1982, a small agricultural machinery show dedicated to local agricultural equipment manufacturers from the county of Lincolnshire, was hosted at the Lincolnshire Showground. The show was called LAMMA (Lincolnshire Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Association) and duringitsfirstyear, itfeatured 50 exhibitors and was visited by approximately 2,500 farmers and contractors. Thefirstshowmadeasmall profit, whichencouragedthe organisers to establish the LAMMA show as an annual feature. Today, LAMMA is the UK’s leading agricultural machinery and equipment event and this year as the show celebrates its 40-year anniversary, we talk with some of the people involved in the event’s success. FOUNDERS The original founders of LAMMA, included Roland Marshall, Bob Barber, Ray LarringtonandGeoaBottom. Mr Marshall was a machinery lecturer from Riseholme College and an established agricultural journalist. Bob Barber was head

of machinery at Caythorpe College, Ray Larrington was a muck-spreader and trailer manufacturer from Boston, and GeoaBottomwasthesales director of Witham Oil and Grease in Lincoln. In the early 1980s, agriculture was experiencing a global slump.Theeaectofthis economic decline, would result in numerous corporate mergers and sadly, the demise of some long-established British tractor and machinery manufacturers. Mr Marshall knew a lot of farmers, dealers and agricultural engineers within the county of Lincolnshire, and he was keen to establish an event which would serve as a means of educating upcoming farmers about new machinery on the market. Former LAMMA chair, John Sartain, says: “Roland Marshall understood that Lincolnshire was home to many small blacksmith and agricultural engineering businesses, which couldnotaaordadvertising or national exposure at large events like the Royal Show or SmithfieldShow.Byestablishing anaaordableannuallocal show, his idea was that these businesses could showcase their products to local farmers and contractors.” Mr Larrington shared the same sentiments. Besides having conversations with Mr Marshall and Mr Barber, he and Mr Bottom had often discussed the importance of having an event in Lincolnshire, for Lincolnshire

businesses. Today, Mr Larrington’s son Richard Larrington is the managing director of Larrington Trailers. Having witnessed his father’s passion for LAMMA, Richard has since exhibited at every single LAMMA show and, won more LAMMA awards than any other exhibitor to date. “Ibelievemyfatherwasthefirst LAMMA committee chair,” says Richard. “Dad was very passionate about the LAMMA show and as one of the original founding members, he worked very hard togettheeventoatheground.” ThefirstLAMMAshowwas hosted in a building at the Lincolnshire Showground. It was by all accounts an informal if not slightly ad hoc event, as LAMMA co-founder and former chair, Mr Bottom says: “In the early years, it was all hands on decks to set up the event before it opened to the public. My son Nigel can still remember being taken out of school, to help me mark out the exhibitors stands with a tape measure and a piece of chalk. “Our company supplied lubricants and paint to many of the manufacturers in Lincolnshire. I knew Mr Marshall and Mr Barber through my work. From the beginning, we all knew LAMMA was what the Lincolnshire farm machinery manufacturing industry needed.

The new Vaderstad Inspire range represents the Swedish seed drill manufacturers debut in the 12m market sector. Production of the new 1200S and 1200C models will start later this year. If the new Vaderstad Inspire looks somewhat familiar, it is because this 12-metre seed drill is a culmination of wellproven Vaderstad components. Essentially, it incorporates the chassis of the 12m Vaderstad Tempo precision planter, with the seed delivery system from the Vaderstad Spirit. Those readers who are upto-date with recent seed drill developments, will know the Vaderstad Inspire is actually a late entry to the 12m party. Competitors such as Horsch and Bednar already produce drills of this size, while Vaderstad has only recently announced that the Inspire will go into full production at the

seed drill, which include the Inspire 1200S (seen here) and the Inspire 1200C. The 1200S features a 5,000-litre seed-only hopper, while the 1200S is equipped with a 2,200-litre/5,000-litre split hopper, suitable for carrying both seed and fertiliser. According to Vaderstad regional sales manager Nick Tinker, the inspiration for the design of a larger 12m seed drill was driven by customer demand. “One of the main factors behind the introduction of the Inspire, was the feedback we were getting from Vaderstad customers who are implementingcontrolledtrabc systems,” he says. “Another factor was the need for a drill which can cover larger acreages. Field tests with the new drill have indicated the 12m Inspire is capable of planting 100 hectares/day.” POWER REQUIREMENT The manufacturer claims the minimum power requirement for the 12m Inspire is 200250hp. In reality the high leveloftractorspecification needed to operate the drill; which requires four spool valves, three oil returns, power beyond hydraulics and IsoBus connectivity, suggests tractors of 400hp+ will be better suited to handling it.

A new electronic joystick control, features capacitivesensing safety technology which only operates when it recognises the presence of a human hand. The joystick, which is set-up using the Command Center screen, also integrates a forward-reverse shuttle switch. This brief introduction to the new John Deere 6R models, did not enable any form of test or comparison to be made. The brief test drive we had was limited to the 6R185 only, which immediately made a strong impression, with its power deliveryandlevelofrefinement. The 6R-Series is an important tractor range in Europe and unfortunately, these tractors are scheduled to head back to Germany in the Spring. However; John Deere says it expectstoseethefirstUK-spec 6R models arriving here from July onwards.

ACT SWIFTLY AND SAFELY TO PROTECT VALUABLE CROPS FROM PEST ATTACKS

With rapeseed and cereal prices contiuing to remain strong, it will pay to protect crops from pest damage this season

W

ith rapeseed and cereal prices continuing to remain strong, it will pay to protect crops from pest damage this season. That’s the advice from Andy Bailey, technical specialist at ADAMA UK, who encourages growers who need to use a pyrethroid-based insecticide to choose one which is less detrimentaltobeneficial organisms. “Oilseed rape and cereal crops have the potential to achieve exceptional returns this year,” Andy explains, “but this earning potential must beoasetagainsthighfuel and fertiliser prices which are predicted to remain well into next year’s cropping cycle. “It therefore pays to protect yields this year, not only to maximise margins for the current cropping cycle, but also to put some cash in the bank to fund what is likely to be another expensive year in 2023.” Whilst growing conditions have mostly been favourable for OSR so far this year, damage caused by pigeon grazing has already reduced the yield potential of some crops. “It therefore makes sense to protect remaining OSR plants from further damage caused by pests 16 | March 2022 | AgriNews

such as seed weevils, pod midges and brassica aphids,” Andy explains. With most winter rape crops alreadyinflower, growers and agronomists should be on the lookout for cabbage seed weevil activity as soon as temperatures start to rise. “Seed weevils can causesignificantyield losses, not only as a result of the damage caused by their hatched larvae feeding within developing pods and consuming approximately 25% of seeds before burrowing out through an exit hole, but also by subsequent populations of brassica pod midges which can cause even greater yield losses when they use the holes left by the weevil larvae to access seed pods to lay their own eggs,” Andy adds.

necessary, Andy advocates the use of one which has a reduced impact on populations of pollinators and otherbeneficialorganisms. “Tau-fluvalinate(availableas Mavrik at 240 g/litre) not only provides fast-acting contact control of cabbage seed weevil and cabbage aphid but has also been proven to have a lower residual impact on beneficialinsectscompared to other pyrethroids. “This reduced toxicity enables the natural predators of OSR pests to recover more quickly after crops have been sprayed, therefore ensuring there’s a strong population ready to challenge any subsequentinfluxesofpests.”

To further reduce the impact on‘beneficials’MrBaileyalso “Growers in known seed recommends not spraying weevil hotspots should be during the hottest part of the particularly vigilant and are day when bees and other advised to use integrated pollinators are more likely pest management protocols to be active. “Instead,” he to safeguard the natural explains,“floweringrape predatoryeaectofbeneficialcrops should be sprayed organisms. KUBOTA LAUNCHES UTILITARIAN VERSION OF M6 RANGE

Kubota has launched a cost conscious, five-model utility version of its M6 tractor range, which is to succeed the MGX series

T

he Kubota M6-001 Utility rangecomprisesfive models spanning 104 to 143hp and starts at £53,300. The model lineup is much the same as the predecessor’s with two short wheel base and three long wheelbase models, the latter of which are heavily based on the recently launched M6-002 Series. The M6-001 Utility series spans 104 to 143hp, and meets Stage 5 emissions thanks to an improved exhaust after-treatment package that is said to lower cost of ownership. Short wheelbase models include the M6-101U and M6-111U, both of which use the four-cylinder 3.8-litre engine, manufactured in house. Maximum power outputs are 104hp and 111hp, withmaximumtorquefigures of 346Nm and 379Nm, respectively. These two models weigh 4.3 tonnes, and use a 2.54m wheelbase.

Engine technology on all models has seen gains in exhaust after-treatment, with DOC and DPF performance increased to deliver greater operationalflexibilityand reduce cost of ownership. DPF regeneration can now be achieved at a much lower engine speed, typically 1,200rpm down from 2,000rpm and is achieved at a much lower working temperature of just 50 degC. The latter makes regeneration easier to achieve with light engine loads, lower noise levels and a reduced fuel burn. The DPF cleaning interval for M6-001 Utility range is 8,000 hours for the 6.1 litre engine, and up to 6,000 hours for the 3.8 litre engine, again contributing to lower operating costs. Engine oil change intervals are every 500 hours on all models.

All M6-001 Utility models get a 40kph semi-powershift transmission, which uses eight powershifts in three Long wheelbase M6-121U, mechanical ranges to provide M6-131U and M6-141U use a 24 by 24 gearbox. Category 3 rear linkage includes electronic linkage control with a 5,000kg lift capacity on short wheelbase models and 6,100kg on long wheelbase tractors. Pto equipment comprises a twospeed 540/1,000 as standard, with a 540 Eco available as an option. All models can be equipped with an optional front linkage with 2,600kg lift capacity, an optional 1,000rpm front pto, and the capability to run pto-powered equipment while stationary.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER

K

eeping your sprayer in top condition

Safeguarding the environment is so important and there are a range of ways available that sprayer operators can and do use to help avoid unnecessary incidents. With best practice guidelines from NRoSO, along with their annual training events, is a great place to start but lets focus on the annual NSTS test. A recent presentation by NSTS highlighted to operators and managers the most common faults on sprayers and how quick and easy they are to repair. Many of these common faults relate to leaks and drips, which in time are going to get gradually worse and potentially

22 | March 2022 | AgriNews

pose a risk to the environment. The Operator check sheet, available on the NSTS website, is there to use all year round but also a good guide when preparing the sprayer for test. One important test the operator can do is run the machine above normal working pressure, say 5 bar, and walk around the sprayer to check for leaks. It is worth doing this both spraying and not spraying (but leaving the pump running) which may show a fault that can be repaired now, rather than it occurring later when you are busy spraying. Another aspect of the check sheet is somewhere to record a calibration. It is part of crop assurance to carry this out

at least once a year and is of course best practice to check on a regular basis anyway. The NSTS test itself checks forward speed, nozzlespacingandflowrateto give you all the information to work with when carrying out a calibration. Check sheets are also available for micro-granular applicators and knapsack sprayers, both of which are required to be inspected regularly, but regular inspections of all pesticide application equipment not only aids protecting the environment but should also help towards ensuring availability of plant protection products for the future.

NOFENCE VIRTUAL FENCING TECHNOLOGY WINS AGRISCOT INNOVATION AWARD Fewer physical fences and better grazing management are on the horizon for livestock producers

only have one pulse per every 30 audio cues and escapes are rare,” says Ms Budal. “Nofence is also very diverse in the type of system it is suitable for, working in intensive rotational grazing, upland and conservation platforms.”

Established in Norway in 2011 for mountain grazers, Nofence has recently become commercially available to UK livestock producers after more than two years of grazing trials on British beef farms.

The technology was a standout to the AgriScot Innovation Award judging panel who awarded points based on if the innovation saved farmers money or had the capacity toincreaseprofits, saysKen Fletcher, award judge and editor of The Scottish Farmer.

Utilising GPS, farmers can create virtual pastures on the Nofence app. Once livestock are turned out on the set virtual pasture while wearing a Nofence collar, GPS and a mobile data network track the animal’s location and report back to the app, triggering the collar to cue an audio signal as the animal nears the virtual fence boundary. If the animal continues to move forward they will receive an electric pulse. This sequence of audio warnings, followed by a possible pulse, can happen three times. If the animal breaches the virtual boundary following the third audio cue, the farmers receive a pop-up notificationviatheNofenceapp with the location of the animal as classed as escaped. Animals can return to pasture without receiving any audio warnings or pulses.

“In the judges’ opinion, Nofence Grazing Technology actually did abitofbothasitcouldoaer reduced capital costs in fencing infrastructure and also allow the freeing up of new grazing opportunitieswhichwouldbenefit farmers’ bottom lines,” says Mr Fletcher. The judging panel also included John Elliot, a Border’s farmer and industry columnist, and John Elliot, CEO of the Royal Highland Agricultural Society of Scotland.

Changing the electric fence in strip grazingfieldscanbeamessyand tiring job and was one area where Nofence would work well.” For Perthshire farmer Andrew Duncan, oneofthefirstUK adopters of the technology, Nofence has been pivotal to improving his grazing programme. Consisting of 2,500 acres of moorland with an elevation range of 200m to over 1,000m, knowing where his herd of Luing cattle was, let alone managing grazing, was a challenge. “The real-time tracking capability of Nofencehassignificantlycutdown on the time required to manage the herd,” explains Mr Duncan. “But more excitingly, we are now able to graze areas of the farm that have not been touched by livestock in more than 100 years. Not only has this allowed us to make more of our land resource, but we can now actively manage our grazing to deliver wider biodiversity and conservation outcomes.”
