Pre- and post-emergence herbicide treatments are vital for black grass

But they are only part of the solution when it comes to delivering a long-term answer to the black-grass conundrum. Pre- and post-emergence herbicide applications are vital to the control of black-grass populations, but are only part of the solution when it comes to delivering a long-term answer to the black-grass conundrum. That is the advice from Adama’s herbicide technical specialist, David Roberts, who, as the company launches its autumn 2018 crop protection knowledge hub, offers his advice to growers faced with the daunting task of controlling black-grass in cereals and oilseed rape. The latest Adama knowledge hub, fittingly titled ‘Overcoming the black-grass burden’, is available now via subscription at www.adama.com/uk. It contains a wealth of useful information, all of which has been designed to enable growers to get a better understanding of how to deal effectively and efficiently with black-grass in combinable crops. “The key message throughout the hub is that there is no single measure which will totally eliminate black-grass,” David Roberts explains. “Instead, effective control is reliant on a combination of factors, with weed mapping, resistance testing, variety choice, rotation, cultivation technique and preand post-emergence chemical control measures all playing their part in an integrated approach.”

4 | Agri News

To compensate for the rising problem of herbicide resistance in black-grass, David Roberts recommends the use of detailed weed mapping and resistance testing to ensure any chemicals that are applied are used accurately and are appropriate to the current weed population. “Resistance amongst black-grass populations to some of the key herbicide active ingredients is intensifying the challenge, so it makes sense to understand your enemy and to devise a crop protection policy accordingly,” David describes. “Mapping black-grass populations, either manually or via the use of modern drone or GPS technologies, and subsequently testing those weed populations for herbicide resistance will give growers a clearer understanding of the task at hand.* “With the problem mapped and the enemy profiled, growers will be able to work with their agronomist to fine-tune their current crop protection protocols, thereby giving themselves the very best chance of overcoming the current blackgrass burden, whilst also laying the foundations for improved control in subsequent years.” From a chemical control perspective, David stresses the need to make pre- and post-emergence herbicide applications. “Growers are strongly advised to apply a robust pre-emergence herbicide within 48 hours of the crop

being drilled,” he explains. “The ensuing post-emergence application should be made soon after black-grass plants have become visible (i.e. at BBCH 11 -12).” With more than 15 active ingredients available to use against black-grass, selecting the right combination of products can be complex. “Flufenacet is regarded by many as the cornerstone active ingredient for cereal crops,” David explains, “but it’s efficacy can be improved by using it in combination with other compatible partner products. “Adding Tower (250g/l chlorotoluron, 40g/l diflufenican and 300g/l pendimethalin) at the pre-emergence timing improves the efficacy of flufenacet, raising the level of black-grass control from 60 to 70%. With the addition of Avadex, the level of preemergence control can be increased to 80%.” Anthem (400g/l pendimethalin) is also a good option for blackgrass control. “Compared to many CS formulations of pendimethalin, Anthem’s SC preparation is more effective, and is a good tank mix partner option,” David adds. In terms of black-grass control in oilseed rape, David recommends an early season application of carbetamide to hit black-grass seedlings when they are small and susceptible.

The new Hektor semi-mounted reversible plough made debut at cereals Amazone used Cereals 2018 to showcase a new range of semi-mounted reversible ploughs

Amazone used Cereals 2018 to showcase a new range of semimounted reversible ploughs. Designated the Hektor, the new plough range is available in 6 to 8 furrows and for tractors up to 350 HP/257 KW. The option of a 6+1 or 7+1 beam can also be specified for added flexibility. Equipped with a stepped manual furrow width adjustment from 36 to 48 cm per body and ample beam dimensions of 150 x 150 x 12 mm thick, the Hektor range has been designed to be simple in operation, and yet offer a high degree of robustness, making it ideal for use on large scale farms. Thanks to the logical, easy to do plough settings, an optimum plough profile can be achieved under any conditions and, with a point to point clearance of 100 cm and a beam height of 82 cm, the plough works blockage-free; even where high levels of crop residues prevail. The new pivot system – which connects the headstock to the plough beam – guarantees a maximum true track following and an optimum pull-line of the

16 | Agri News

combination. Here, integrated as standard, is the hydraulic front furrow adjustment for an easy matching of the plough to the internal track width of the tractor wheels. Turnover cylinders, with hydraulic stop position damping, guarantee a smooth and seamless headland changeover for the plough. The large-dimensioned, 500/45 – 22.5 saddle wheel (500 mm wide, 1015 mm outer diameter) means an easy pull as well as accurate depth guidance even under the most arduous of conditions. Plus, the transport wheel is positioned well up the frame so that ploughing close to field borders or obstacles is possible. In addition, it is equipped with hydro-pneumatic dampening which protects the plough as well as increasing both the safety and driver comfort during transport. The large contact area of the wheel minimises soil pressure and a scraper ensures that the wheel is kept clean. For the Hektor range, overload protection is carried out either

via shear bolt or, on the Hektor S, via a hydraulic stone protection system. Very high release forces ensure an enormous resistance of the shear bolt even in hard and dry soils, whereas, for the Hektor S, which comes in either 6 or 7 furrows only, the hydraulic accumulators can be set for pressure either individually or centrally from the tractor seat. As always, the focal point of any plough is the shape and finish of the plough body which is responsible for both the quality of work and an economical ploughing operation. With this in mind, the new semi-mounted Hektor ploughs can be equipped with the complete range of ©plus bodies, including the new WX400 PE plastic option, thus covering a vast range of differing soil and operational conditions. All the plough bodies are characterised by a high wear resistance, clean incorporation of crop residues, wide furrow clearing and a low pulling power requirement.

National Egg & Poultry Award winners named in inaugural ceremony The 2018 National Egg & Poultry Award winners were announced on Tuesday night in a prestigious ceremony at London’s Royal Garden Hotel LJ Fairburn & Son scooped the Poultry Business of the Year award in recognition of their sustained programme of investment and growth, while Moy Park was named processor of the year. Noble Foods won the prize for marketing initiative of the year for its Happy Eggs campaign, and Traditional Norfolk Poultry walked away with Grower of the Year. The National Egg & Poultry Awards were launched this year as an annual event by Poultry Business magazine and Lewis Business Media to recognise excellence and innovation in the egg and poultry sectors. Business leaders from all the major egg and poultry firms and representatives from industry bodies gathered to celebrate the achievements from across the spectrum of the sector – with awards recognising individuals excelling in their roles, to businesses investing and growing. BBC sports presenter Hazel Irvine hosted the ceremony, laced with plenty of poultrybased puns as well as stories from her 30 year career as a broadcaster. Poultry Business publisher

Simon Lewis said: “These awards have highlighted the breadth and depth of talent, drive and ambition in the egg and poultry sectors and is a pleasure to recognise the winners, but also all of those shortlisted which in itself is a great achievement.” Poultry Business editor Chloe Ryan told the audience there was a lot to be proud of. “As one of the judges, it was so encouraging to see real investment and innovation in the businesses we visited. Automation in plants is truly impressive to see, and the level of investment in some businesses – into new equipment, new processes, new people – shows this industry is fit for the future. “Growing and supplying food is the most essential, basic role any society depends upon. As we often hear when discussions of economics, politics and the environment come up – everyone’s got to eat. And whatever changes in the world around us that fact will remain. “And what’s really encouraging is that all the winds are set fair for those in the egg and poultry business.

“In 2018, six billion eggs were sold to UK consumers – the highest number ever. “In the three months ending in April, 130 million kilos of poultry meat was sold to UK consumers – nearly 3% up on the same period a year ago.“ In the individual awards, newcomer Lyn Williams was named stockman of the year. She works on a 16,000 freerange laying unit producing eggs for Tesco through egg packer Anglia Free Range. The unit was established in January 2017 on a green field site on an upland beef and sheep farm that had no experience of poultry farming before. The first flock of Lohmann Brown is about to be depleted and they have produced 325 eggs per bird at a mortality of 3.7%. Anna Healy was named unit manager of the year for her work at Joice & Hill Poultry. Over the last five years she has managed the expansion and modernisation programme to ensure the business has one of the most modern, bio-secure and efficient hatcheries in the UK.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

British farmers are ‘better equipt’ to deliver high quality food, says Gove NFU President Minette Batters welcomed comments made by the Secretary of State on British farmers being better equipped than anyone

NFU President Minette Batters welcomed comments made by the Secretary of State on British farmers being better equipped than anyone to fulfil the national and global demand for high quality food. The comments came as part of a speech from the Secretary of State for Food and Environment Michael Gove at the NFU Summer Reception which took place yesterday afternoon. The Secretary of State also said he ‘heard, received and understood’ the NFU’s call on Government to uphold the high quality produce that he 26 | Agri News

said was a ‘hallmark of British agriculture’ in post-Brexit trade agreements. NFU President Minette Batters said: “We welcome the Secretary of State’s recognition of the high standards that British farmers are proud to produce food to and the work that goes into giving everyone a countryside to be proud of. “Yesterday I made clear to MPs in attendance that we have a vision of productive, thriving, profitable farming businesses that can farm smarter – producing more food for a burgeoning

population with less impact. It’s these businesses that can afford to invest in our natural environment. “As Michael Gove said yesterday, the health of all of us depends on the health of farming. We have an ambition for British farming to have a clean bill of health postBrexit, ready to provide every citizen, regardless of income, with access to nutrient-dense, high-welfare, quality and affordable British food.”

Dualways Limited has been appointed as the new TGB ATV distributor

TGB Taiwan has announced that Dualways Limited has been appointed as the new TGB ATV Distributor for the UK and Ireland TGB is well established as one of the world`s leading manufacturers of ATVs and scooters. With its headquarters and primary production facilities in Taiwan, TGB offers a range of outstanding products that are designed, developed and produced to the highest standards to meet the varied and exacting demands of an international market. The TGB ATV range includes models from 425cc up to an 83bhp 1000cc V-twin that is certain to catch the interest of the large capacity XC and beachrace riders as well as the heavy-duty work sector. With dealer and customer support networks in over 50 countries, the TGB ATV range has already hit the mark with European riders, and boasts class-leading sales in Germany and France. Dualways Limited operates from a 51,000 sq ft warehouse and office facility in the Midlands. The company directors have over 30 years combined experience in the ATV import and distribution industry and maintains a team of experienced dealer support staff and specialist technicians. In 2016, Dualways will be investing heavily in the further development of the TGB brand via a combination of both traditional and online advertising. Eventure, an

experienced online marketing agency, has been appointed to develop and implement the TGB awareness campaign alongside the new TGB ATV website. Eventure’s TGB account manager, Stuart Gordon commented: “We are very excited about the opportunity to work with both Dualways and TGB on the development of the brand and also the online communication, end user experience and dealer support technologies. “We are developing a combined traditional and online campaign that will have outstanding reach. “The beauty of working with a brand and range like TGB is the quality and performance already stand out from the crowd. Our challenge is simply to let people know the products are available and fully supported by a strong dealer network with top level warranty and aftersales support.” TGB’s new sales director, Henry Maplethorpe, said: “I have been in the ATV industry for a long time and have always followed TGB`s development and products very closely. They are, and always have been, a company that paves the way with new technologies and products to suit market trends.

working with TGB and we are keen to mirror the success that the brand has achieved throughout the world. “We remain in close contact with HQB, the previous TGB distributor. HQB’s knowledge of the products and the dealer network will ensure a smooth period. This ongoing relationship will also allow for continued dealer support for all TGB ATVs currently in the UK.” HQB managing director Richard Johnson said: “Whenever there is a change in distributor for a range of products there is bound to be concern among the existing dealers and those members of the public who have purchased them. “We are committed to making sure that the transition of TGB’s distribution arrangements from HQB to Dualways is smooth and without detriment to any existing stakeholders. To this extent, the agreed transfer of all warranty responsibility, spare parts and residual TGB machine stocks from HQB to Dualways is important, and this is being actioned to coincide with the new marketing arrangements. “We wish Dualways and TGB good luck going forward.“

“We are very excited to be

Inside the development of the new Ranger XP 1000

Two decades since the introduction of the very first Polaris Ranger, the historic legacy continues with the launch of the Ranger XP 1000 The RANGER XP® 1000 is the latest addition to our strong utility vehicle line-up, and sets a new industry standard with over one hundred user-inspired improvements. It features class-leading power (82hp) and torque (61lb-ft), industryleading towing (over 1100kg) and ground clearance (330mm) – which make it is the hardest working, smoothest riding SXS built. So what does it take to design the new RANGER XP 1000? Steve Wilcox, Senior

Industrial Designer at Polaris Industries commented on development:“The process of getting a new product ready for production involves research, sketching, clay modeling and then a full-size hard model is created. This is followed by A-side Computer Aided Design (CAD) data for tooling. During the early phases of sketches and clay development, a new model can take between 24-32 months to complete a ground up design, with several team members contributing up to 65 hours per week.”

Steve was the Senior Designer of the RANGER XP® 1000, and responsible for the creation of the 2D exterior styling concept that was chosen to go into production and also overseeing the development of the design in clay, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and production. “I love the RANGER line-up and I’d say that the new XP® 1000 is my favourite as it’s a product of my own blood, sweat and tears – and it turned out great.”

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Electric and more

2.4-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine. More power and torque. Increased EV motor, generator and battery capacity

Overall greater efficiency as well as improved driving performance Steering, chassis, brakes tuned for more driver appeal Enhanced S-AWC system with new Sport and Snow modes Exterior styling and interior cabin enhancements Quietness, refinement and ride quality also improved Background: The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was launched in the UK in 2014 and made an immediate impact – in 2013 fewer than 1,000 plug-in hybrids were sold in the UK but by the end of 2014 Mitsubishi had sold more than 10,000 Outlander PHEVs, driven by the public’s desire to drive

greener vehicles as well as the increasing appetite for SUV and 4X4 vehicles. By November 2015 the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV had amassed 50,000 sales across Europe and by January 2018 it passed the 100,000 milestone. In fact, despite a growing number of competitors it was Europe’s best selling plug-in hybrid vehicle three years in a row from 2015 – 2017* and it also remains the best-selling plugin vehicle – hybrid or electric – in the UK. Key to the success of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is that it doesn’t ask its owners to make any compromises. For people wanting an SUV, it offers the same space

and practicality, as well as the all-important elevated driving position, as any of its competitors. The battery pack doesn’t eat up boot space or compromise the dynamics – it is integrated into the floor, keeping the centre of gravity low and ensuring that the Outlander PHEV retains the practical advantages of a large boot and fold-flat rear seats. For those looking for a four-wheel drive vehicle, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers the unique solution of having an electric motor for each axle which means that even in EV mode, the Outlander PHEV remains a true 4X4 at all times.
