DEALER ANNOUNCEMENTS Kubota announces further expansion with Lister Wilder

K

ubota (UK) Ltd is pleased to announce that Lister Wilder is to further widen its geographical area, reaching into parts of South West of England. This progressive extension of its sales area and customer base, will see the dealership expand into Somerset to support agricultural and ground care customers across the South West of England from its newest Kubota centre, located at Keynsham, Bristol. “Lister Wilder’s expansion further strengthens Kubota’s commitment to its customers and the markets in which our business operates,” says Henry Bredin, general manager of Kubota (UK)’s Tractor Business Unit. “This move sees Lister Wilder continue to strengthen its partnership with Kubota,

as it actively supports a wider customer base in both agricultural and ground care sectors.” It may be recalled that Lister Wilder became the first full-line Kubota dealer in Europe, and its business expansion plans have already seen the first of its new Kubota centres established at Meadowlands, Bibury in Gloucestershire, and also at Keynsham, Bristol. Both these new Kubota centres have led to the creation of new jobs within sales, after-sales and service, plus parts and warranty departments, stimulating the local economies in which Lister Wilder operates. Lister Wilder’s Bristol-based Kubota centre is scheduled to open on 3rd May 2022 on Burnett Business Park. Its location enables the

dealership to support customers in north Somerset and the Mendip Hills, reaching south to Bridgwater and the Quantocks. “We’re pleased to be a part of this exciting journey with Kubota, but just as importantly, we’re looking forward to welcoming new and existing agricultural and ground care customers through the doors at Keynsham,” says Phill Hughes, sales director for Lister Wilder. About Kubota Corporation Kubota Corporation has been a leading manufacturer of agricultural, ground care, construction equipment and industrial engines since 1890. DEALER ANNOUNCEMENTS Welsh dairy dealership expands

L

loyds Dairy Centre has almost doubled its team and taken on a new site in Pembrokeshire to meet demand from Welsh dairy farmers. The DeLaval dealer has operated from Lampeter for 30 years and has expanded with further branches in Carmarthen and Fishguard. Manager, Owen McConochie says:

He suggests that some farms in Wales are looking to grow and are installing larger parlours. “There has been strong interest in DeLaval rotary parlours and robots, and we are installing two rotary parlours near St Clears as the moment. Growing herd sizes is definitely a trend and this has led to farms investing in new equipment,” he explains.

“We have expanded the team from 7 to 13 in 2022 to help manage the level of enquiries and support that we give to farmers in the area. We have operated in Carmarthen since 2006 and have expanded into Pembrokeshire this year to further widen the area that we cover.”

Almost three quarters of the team is under thirty which has been a deliberate strategy to encourage talented young dairy specialists to work in the service sector. “By using our experienced staff to train younger recruits, we have a stronger team and a more sustainable future. Our staff

are enthusiastic and have embraced new technology such as robotics to help us offer every farm a variety of services from parlour installations to dynamic testing and milking diagnostics.” The business operates 24/7, with service engineers on hand to help farmers at any time. “We are passionate about service, and I think this has helped us grow over the years. We offer fixed cost maintenance packages to help farmers budget and we have a full portfolio of chemicals and consumables that are distributed by our own technicians, operating out of both Lampeter and Fishguard.”

INNOVATIVE SUGAR BEET VARIATIES HIGHLIGHT

Importance of plant breeding. Sugar beet breeders continue to lead the way in rapidly developing new and improved varieties

i

mportance of plant breeding Sugar beet breeders continue to lead the way in rapidly developing new and improved varieties. Ongoing investment in research and development is bringing new varieties to improve pest and disease resistance whilst also increasing yields. Plant breeders have also demonstrated these varieties can improve nitrogen and water use efficiency. These benefits all count towards ensuring the resilience of UK domestic sugar production in the coming years. BSPB CEO Sam Brooke comments: “In what has been a challenging couple of years it remains vital that new genetics are constantly brought to market to help

growers increase yields by tackling diseases such as virus yellows. Nine new varieties have been added to the Recommended List this year complementing the 13 proven varieties already on the list. This is testament to the tenacity of plant breeders and their ability to address the issues and concerns of sugar beet growers throughout the UK.” The National List and Recommended List are now administered separately to encourage new and improved genetics to reach the UK market as quickly as possible. “By breeding varieties that can increase yields, whilst reducing our reliance on the use of chemistry and nitrogen, we can help to reduce costs

and safeguard UK sugar beet production. More robust varieties will help to challenge diseases, but breeders need the security that the UK market can be sustainable in order to continue the high level of investment in R&D,” she adds. BSPB is working closely with sugar beet breeding members – DLF Beet Seed Ltd, KWS UK Ltd, Limagrain (UK) Ltd, Lion Seeds Ltd, Sesvanderhave UK Ltd and Strube UK Ltd to advocate the importance of sugar beet to crop diversity and the economy. “To do this it is critical that growers are provided with new genetics at the earliest opportunity to sustain production and maintain a competitive edge,” she concludes.

NEW TRAILED DRILL WITH WORKING WIDTHS OF 8 & 9 METRES

New Terrasem machines from Pottinger guarantee efficient, high output drilling

N

ew Terrasem machines from Pottinger guarantee efficient, high output drilling There are many factors involved in sowing such as the optimum sowing time depending on the type of plant, the duration of sunshine, and temperature. These weather-dependent time windows are getting shorter and shorter, so efficient, high output drilling is decisive. Pottinger claim the new TERRASEM machines guarantee this with the V 8000 and V 9000 models. The new trailed seed drills are now also available with working widths of 8 and 9 metres and can be customequipped to handle all sitespecific conditions. Thanks to the disc harrow as the leading tillage tool, the TERRASEM seed drills are ideal for mulch drilling and are available with

WAVE DISC’s as an option for loosening the soil in strips. The CLASSIC version without tillage tools is smooth running on prepared seedbeds. With their large working widths, high operating speeds are possible with the best positioning accuracy.

equipped with two metering systems as standard and have a seed hopper capacity of 5,600 litres. Seeding rates of 1.5 kg to 420 kg at 12 kph are possible. The seed flow rate can easily be adjusted on these machines without leaving the tractor seat.

A new configuration of all tillage tools ensures that the machine works efficiently and 100 percent in a straight line. The disc harrow as well as the fertiliser coulters (D Z-machine) and DUAL DISC seed coulters are mounted in an X configuration. There is no need to grease the tillage tools because they are mounted on sealed bearings. The metering systems are designed for the highest possible precision and ensure that exactly the right amount of any given seed type is used. The TERRASEM V 8000 D and TERRASEM V 9000 D are

Single shoot, double shoot and double shoot-mix are the key to perfect emergence. Optimised to specific conditions and crop rotations, it is possible to vary between the application of: seed, seed with fertiliser, two different mixtures of seed, additional components such as microgranules or a companion crop using the TERRASEM Z models with FERTILIZER feature. The new TERRASEM models are also agrirouter-compatible.

LAUNCH OF THE NEW CENTAYA-C GRAIIN & FERTILISER DRILL COMBINATION

Amazone will take the opportunity at this year’s Cereals event on June 8th9th to show off its extended pneumatic harrow-mounted seed drill range

T

he highlight of this new drill combination, the Centaya-C, is its 2,000 litre twin-chamber hopper. This makes it possible to apply several materials in one pass. The new Centaya-C Super is available in working widths of 3, 3.5 and 4 metres. Wide range of applications The demands on modern seed drills as the basis for maximising yields are constantly changing owing to the growing challenges which are arising in professional crop production. Precise seed metering and exact depth placement therefore have top priority. Furthermore, there is a particular focus on the simultaneous application of several seed types, or the parallel application of fertiliser with the seed. The twin-chamber hopper means that the new Centaya-C Super now offers the option of sowing companion and undersown crops in addition to the main cash crop. These are of great benefit for weed suppression and for increasing erosion control and biodiversity. In addition, the simultaneous application of fertiliser is an efficient solution that leads to rapid seedling development and high field emergence. This sowing technique offers farmers and contractors a variety of establishment methods and

a high degree of flexibility by the combination of seed and fertiliser. Moreover, fuel and time can be saved through a reduction in the number of passes. Up to three different placement points The Centaya-C Super can be equipped with either the RoTeC pro single disc coulter or the TwinTeC double disc coulter. The 400 mm RoTeC pro coulter enables the application of two media utilising the single-shoot process. In this case, the individually-metered media are brought together in the single disc coulter and fed to a single entry point using the same conveying system. This enables, for example, a small amount of fertiliser to be placed directly in the row along with the grain. In conjunction with theTwinTeC double disc coulter, it is even possible to apply two different seed types or seed and fertiliser at two different entry points utilising the double-shoot process. In this case, the first medium is embedded in the seed furrow via the TwinTeC coulter and the second medium is conveyed to an additional outlet on the TwinTeC coulter via a separate conveyor system and placed in the soil

in front of the depth guidance roller. This offset placement means, for instance, that fertiliser can be used precisely, thereby ensuring a more comprehensive supply to the plant. The Centaya-C Super can also be used in conjunction with the GreenDrill 200 catch crop drill for the simultaneous sowing of catch crops or fine seeds. This combination allows a third material to be applied to the soil surface via baffle plates. In this respect, the seed is fed directly from the 200 litre mounted hopper down to baffle plates behind the seed drill. Precise, smart and highly productive The ISOBUS-controlled Centaya-C Super enables separate and precise metering of the various application materials via the infinitely adjustable electric metering units with sowing rates of 0.5 - 400 kg/ha. The Centaya-C Super can be used at working speeds of up to 12 km/h with row spacings of 12.5 and 15 cm. Filling is easy thanks to the large hopper opening. The seed hopper and the individual metering units can be easily accessed via the loading board.

CLAAS TRION AWARDED AS FARM MACHINE 2022

The Claas Trion combine harvester series was honored by an international jury as Farm Machine 2022 in the combine harvester category

T

he CLAAS TRION combine harvester series was honored by an international jury as FARM MACHINE 2022 in the combine harvester category. Due to the corona pandemic, the award took place digitally. Every two years, a jury of international agricultural and agricultural engineering journalists presents the FARM MACHINE Awards. Normally, these are awarded at Agritechnica, but due to the cancellation of this year's world leading trade fair for agricultural technology, the leading German Landwirtschaftsverlag (dlv) decided on a digital award, with one category per day over a period of around three weeks. In the "Combine Harvester" category, the CLAAS TRION combine series convinced the jury of its worthiness of the award. "The FARM MACHINE Award is a great honor for everyone who worked on this product and confirms our development goal of a strongly customer-oriented, technologically broad-based midrange combine harvester," explains Jan-Hendrik Mohr,

who is responsible for the grain harvesting business area on the CLAAS Group Executive Board . “Rarely before have farmers and contractors from all the important growing regions in the world been so central to a new development as with the TRION. As a result, we can now cover an equipment range from low-spec to highspec from 258 hp, which gives customers the opportunity to catch up technologically with the LEXION, or to use a simple machine without a lot of electronics to suit their business.” The TRION was first presented and launched in Europe in the summer of 2021 under the slogan "Fits your farm." With 20 models in the range, together with its wide choice of features, it completely redefines the

medium combine harvester performance class. From the 258 hp five-walker to the 435 hp hybrid combine with double rotor, almost all models can be equipped with for example TERRA TRAC crawler tracks, belt inclined conveyors, MONTANA chassis slope compensation or various expansion stages of the CEMOS driver assistance system. In addition, the new CLAAS GPS PILOT with the CEMIS 1200 terminal for automatic GPS-controlled steering with the TRION was introduced. Series production of the TRION started in February on the new combine harvester assembly line at the Harsewinkel headquarters, which was completely revamped just a few months ago.

LAMMA 2022 WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT 4th & 5th MAY 2022

The Lamma Show returns to the halls of Birmingham NEC on may 4th & 5th for its long-awaited 40th anniversary event

T

he LAMMA Show returns to the halls of Birmingham NEC on May 4 and 5 for its long-awaited 40th anniversary event. More than 600 exhibitors and tens of thousands of leading farmers from across all sectors and regions are expected to visit over the two days. Originally planned for January, the show was postponed amid concerns over the Omicron variant of Covid-19. However, with all restrictions now lifted, LAMMA 2022 is going ahead unhindered allowing the agricultural industry to reconnect after a difficult couple of years. Chris Taylor from the NFU said he and his colleagues were looking forward to seeing visitors: “The NFU is delighted that LAMMA has secured new dates in May to enable this key agricultural event to go ahead in 2022. It’s more important than ever that we make up for the many lost face to face opportunities due to the pandemic, and LAMMA presents us with the opportunity to engage with thousands of our members over the two days.” Kubota will be using the event to unveil its M6-001 Utility series tractor range. Marketing manager Rob Edwards said

LAMMA had the 'presence and scale’ to showcase its new products, as well as positively promoting the wider industry and machinery sector. “We want to show what we are doing as a business and have exciting things to showcase. LAMMA is a great place to do that,” he said. "We like LAMMA and it represents the scale and significant profile of the industry, and that is a positive for us." James Hudson of agricultural engineers JF Hudson agreed: “It feels good to be coming back. This is our first trade show for two years and a chance to connect and launch new products. People in the sector are very resilient and innovative, there have been many changes and developments within agriculture so we are also looking forward to seeing what other exhibitors are showcasing.” The team from farm machinery manufacturer McHale was also pleased about the event’s return, said Eoin Clarke: “LAMMA has always been a good show for McHale. Although the dates changed, we are happy to support the show and look forward to meeting our customers and dealers again in May.”

Nichola Bell, Marketing Lead at Agriconnect said: “We are so excited to be opening the doors to LAMMA 2022 at last and promise it will be worth the wait! As well as getting up to date with the latest machinery, technology and other innovations across nine halls visitors can enjoy some nostalgia in our new Classics Zone supported by Classic Tractor magazine. “Our anniversary celebrations will showcase the incredible progress made across the industry since the first LAMMA Show 40 years ago. The operation you are doing must be of benefit to the land/livestock. “You can also use rebated fuel in agricultural vehicles when: cutting verges and hedges which border a road; clearing snow; gritting and assisting any clear-up following flooding. “Secondly, once a legitimate use has been established, it is important to then confirm the vehicle you are intending to use is also allowed to use red.”

ew for LAMMA 2022 will be two speaker zones where visitors will be able to drop in for updates on the latest industry developments and issues, plus have a chance to put their questions to industry experts. One of the biggest draws within the programme is expected to be a daily session led by NAAC and HMRC on the changes to rebated fuel being implemented today (April 1). Entitlement for rebated diesel, or red diesel, is being withdrawn from various industries as the Government pushes for the development of cleaner and greener alternatives. And the big change applies to vehicles which are used off-road. These will no longer be automatically entitled to

use red diesel. Instead, use of the rebated fuel will be based entirely on what the vehicle is used for. Fortunately, agriculture, horticulture, forestry and fisheries are among the industries which have retained the entitlement to use red diesel. However, the fuel issue gets a little cloudy for those operating mixed-use businesses. Jill Hewitt, chief executive of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC), says: “There are two things to consider when working out if your business can use red diesel. “The first is that any work you do is for an agricultural

To help bring you up to speed with the changes and answer all your questions, speakers from HMRC’s Fuel Duty Policy Team and NAAC will be leading a session at 1pm on both days of LAMMA in one of two new speaker zones. LAMMA Show is free to attend, make sure to register for your ticket via www.lammashow. com. Other topics being discussed at the show include Connectivity, Farm security, Secondhand machinery & getting the most of kit, new product developments, Legislative updates, Farmer Health (mental and physical) and Careers in the ag machinery sector. We will be announcing the full speaker programme in the next few weeks. Make sure to visit www. lammashow.com for all the latest show updates.

JF HUDSON PREPARE TO GO BIG AT LAMMA 2022

Having been a regular supporter of Lamma for 4 years now JF Hudson have built on their success every year

H

aving been a regular supporter of LAMMA for 4 years now, JF Hudson have built on their success every year. In 2017, they booked a 12m squared stand with the aim of showcasing their brand and products to as many attendees as possible. In 2019, they won a LAMMA Innovation award in the Livestock category and the overall award for innovation, the LAMMA founders award and gained great exposure for their brand with coverage across LAMMA and related brands. Looking ahead to 2022, the company has re-booked a stand that is nine times larger than their previous stand space. We caught up with them to find out more about their experience with the LAMMA Show. “JF Hudson offer farmers in the UK a diverse range of products and services to help build more sustainable and profitable businesses. Exhibiting at LAMMA has always been a worthwhile investment for our business – it’s the only event that guarantees exposure to potential customers from throughout the UK. Attending shows costs a lot of money, yet LAMMA is the key show we attend each year. Our reasoning behind this decision is if we are going to exhibit at a large show, then we make sure it is the main event. Getting in

front of a wide range of potential customers is crucial to us, and with such a diverse range of products on offer, LAMMA provides us with the perfect opportunity to do this. Plus, as we have a strong focus on offering new technologies to help improve farm management, it is also a great place to launch new products too. Although we may do a couple of straight sales on stand, we tend to take warm business leads that we can follow up after the event. LAMMA however offers us much wider ranging benefits than sales alone. For us it is unrivalled – there’s nothing like reaching that many opportunities over two day at LAMMA. It is a unique environment in having chance to get face to face with new and existing customers to demonstrate our products and services. We get to showcase our business along with other quality exhibitors and gain great exposure and connections. The large amount of people that our brand is exposed to, coupled with the benefits that come with the LAMMA brand association, means that customers take your company more seriously. We’ve got further, faster because of exhibiting at LAMMA - our business growth has been accelerated because of it. We find that many people down the track, when they are ready

to buy, think of JF Hudson as they remember meeting us at the Show. We’re excited to take on a larger stand at the 2022 event and showcase a wide range of products and launch new products. We have a lot to plan, but as much hard work as the build up to the event is, we’ve always enjoyed being there. The organisers are committed to developing the show as a world-class event. Agriculture can be a challenging industry for everyone involved, LAMMA being at the beginning of the year gives us a great start to the year and a fantastic injection of enthusiasm at a time of year when moral can be low. Being able to exhibit again in a face-to-face environment holds huge value for our business. Visibility at events is especially important and although we’ve held a steady stream of customers throughout 2020 and into 2021, we’re always looking for new ways to grow and keep focused on the future in order to support the business’s continuing success. Exhibiting at LAMMA helps us in this objective. We highly recommend to others to exhibit at LAMMA, as it is a great place to showcase your brand and product - you’re bound to connect with your target market.”

The Sitera e has a 3-metre working width with an electric motor to provide variable rate functionality through a HELICA fluted roller. “The addition of electric drive to the Sitera range offers easier and faster calibration on the move. This new range can be programmed using ISOBUS, the VT30 terminal or KUHN’s CCI 800 and 1200. Operators can therefore make adjustments at the push of a button rather than having to leave the cab,” explains product specialist Edd Fanshawe. The HELICA distribution with helical fluted roller also enables

variable rate and headland shut off on the move. “Seed application rates of 1.5kg/ha to 450kg/ha of all seed varieties can be applied precisely without changing or dismantling any parts which will save time, reduce waste, and increase seed application accuracy,” he adds.

machine has three models enabling operators to choose between the Suffolk coulter (3010), disc (3020) or parallelogram mounted SEEDFLEX (3030) options. “Each is compatible with the HR 1020, 1030, and 1040 series power harrows which feature a quickrelease interface for fast coupling and uncoupling of the seed drill. For higher working speeds of up to 15kph on light soils and in plant residues there is also a CD 1020 seedbed cultivator option,” he concludes.

The seed application rate modulation can be adjusted manually or automatically by GPS when using an ISOBUS terminal with TC-GEO functionality. Using section control functionality, the seed drill will also start and stop Southam Agricultural automatically Fields Farm, Station Rd, by GPS on the Southam CV47 2DH headland. t: 01926 813426 The 3-metre

LANDINI: PRECISION FARMING WITH THE REX 4

Precision technologies offer huge potential to establish and manage vine and fruit crops

P

recision technologies offer huge potential to help establish and manage vine and fruit crops. In a series of demonstrations, tractor specialist Landini has been working with technology firms to bring growers up to date on what’s possible. Requiring arrow-straight rows for equal spacing, light interception, growth and ease of treatment and harvesting, fruit and vine crop establishment of is a task ideally suiting satellite-guided tractor steering. Pass-to-pass parallel repeatability is ideal not only

for establishment, but then for subsequent operations such as mowing and spraying, using the same recorded A-B lines. But on many orchard and vineyard enterprises, precision technologies have much wider potential to ease workloads and improve crop yields and quality, believes Luke Barnard, precision farming specialist at AgriArgo UK, the distributor of Landini and McCormick tractors. Demonstrations “Recent demonstrations in conjunction with Horsepower

UK, our Kent dealer, allowed us to illustrate on a Landini REX4-100F tractor how auto-steering using a TopCon AES-35 retro-fit electric steering system, can aid planting and subsequent operations,” he explains. “This led to discussions regarding other technologies with potential benefits, including auto spray control, altering the application rate and nozzle sections on-the-move to apply only as much of a product as necessary, and only where required.

RABI LAUNCHES FUEL POVERTY GRANTS FOR FARMING FAMILIES With the cost of living soaring to its highest level in a decade, grants of up to £1,500 can be assessed as part of RABI’s fuel poverty response

ith the cost of living soaring to its highest level in a decade, grants of up to £1,500 can be accessed as part of RABI’s fuel poverty response. Farming people across England and Wales can apply to agricultural charity, RABI, for support towards home related energy costs, such as energy bills or for making home energy efficiency improvements.

With gas and electricity prices rising over 50% on April 1, research from National Energy Action (NEA) indicates that 6.5 million households across the UK will be in fuel poverty, over two million more than just six months ago. RABI’s director of services, Caron Whaley said: “People facing immediate financial hardship in relation to fuel cost increases can apply for grants of up to £1,500 towards bill payments or making homes more energy efficient.

“We should all be able to stay

Ms Whaley continued: “Our

service delivery teams have a really good understanding of the many challenges farming people face. The additional NEA training will develop their knowledge of some of the less obvious impacts of fuel poverty. “NEA research has highlighted links between fuel poverty and wider mental health issues. As our Big Farming Survey report has shown, there are already high levels of poor mental health within the farming sector so it’s important that we understand how to provide the necessary support to tackle this is worrying issue.” Fuel poverty grants are available now and can be used towards home heating costs and energy efficiency measures, such boiler servicing, installing water tank jackets, addressing lagging for pipes, or installing loft insulation. Applications can be made by calling the charity’s 24hour helpline on 0800 188 4444. Charitable payments will be means tested against disposable income to ensure the funding is fairly distributed.

BRITISH EGG INDUSTRY CRISIS AS PRODUCTION COSTS SOAR

British egg farmers are facing unprecedented rises in the cost of producing eggs, leaving many on the brink of bankruptcy

British egg farmers are facing unprecedented rises in the cost of producing eggs, leaving many on the brink of bankruptcy with hundreds of farms in real danger of going out of business if returns do not significantly improve. With British farmers losing money on every egg they produce, which has increased in recent weeks following the invasion of Ukraine, many are choosing to stop producing rather than lose their farms, resulting in falling numbers of hens in the UK, and increasing pressure on supply. The national flock

has already declined by around four million in the past year. Feed increases are at the forefront of the surge in costs, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine which has added 25p-30p per dozen feed costs on top of neverbefore-seen cost increases right across the supply chain from pullets to energy, and well-reported labour shortages. Andrew Joret, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, said: “The tidal wave of cost increases will see many family farms, some of which have

been producing eggs for generations, going under in a matter of days, unless something is done quickly.” According to the British Egg Industry Council, the increase in uncontrollable input costs required to produce eggs, which is currently up by around 30% on farms, shows no signs of slowing down and the availability of British eggs on supermarket shelves is seriously under threat if these costs are not passed on. Mr Joret continued: “The situation was unsustainable prior to the terrible war,

CHIEF VET WARNS POULTRY KEEPERS IN SUFFOLK TO TAKE URGENT ACTION NOW

Chief Vet warns poultry keepers in suffolk to take urgent action now or risk losing flocks to bird flu

T

he UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss has urged poultry keepers in Suffolk to step up their efforts in the fight against bird flu following a recent spike of cases in the county. In the last month alone, there have been five new infected premises confirmed in Suffolk with highly pathogenic avian influenza. The warning comes as the UK faces its largest ever outbreak of bird flu with over 100 cases confirmed since the start of November. The Government introduced housing measures in November 2021 to minimise the disease spreading. This means that if you keep chickens, ducks, geese or

any other birds you are legally required to keep them indoors and to follow strict biosecurity measures. If you do not do this, the disease could kill your birds and you could be prosecuted. These measures apply to all bird keepers whether you keep birds commercially or have a single pet chicken. Ms Middlemiss said: “We have taken swift action to limit the spread of the disease including by introducing housing measures. However we are still seeing a number of bird flu cases both on commercial farms and in backyard birds right across Suffolk. “Many poultry keepers

in Suffolk have excellent biosecurity standards but the number of cases we are seeing suggests that not enough is being done by all bird keepers to keep bird flu out. Whether you keep just a few birds or thousands, you must take action now to protect your birds from this highly infectious disease. “The avian flu outbreak has not gone away and implementing scrupulous biosecurity remains absolutely critical. You must continue to regularly clean and disinfect your footwear and clothes before entering enclosures, stop your birds mixing with any wild birds and only allow visitors that are strictly necessary. It is your actions that will help keep your birds safe.”

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

NEW NAAC CHAIRMAN TO LEAD ON SAFETY

James Bannister has been elected as new NAAC Chairman at the Annual General Meeting.

N

AAC, new chairman, safety focus

James Bannister has been elected as new NAAC Chairman at the AGM. Taking over from previous Chair Matt Redman, James runs an agricultural contracting business in the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire borders spreading manures and lime, alongside crop spraying. However, it was in 1998 that James’s life was drastically changed when he lost his left arm in a farm accident, having become entangled in a potato harvester. It has taken over twenty years to successfully rebuild his life

and business, JLR Farm Services, and James is now in a position to want to help others stay safe on farms. ‘If just one person changes the way they operate, based on my experience, that will be one life potentially saved’, commented James. ‘In my new role as NAAC Chairman, I want to drive the Association forward, whilst putting particular focus on trying to improve our dreadful industry safety record.’ Farming is currently facing challenging times, with rocketing input prices and a declining farm subsidies, but the NAAC is working hard to ensure that contractors can future-proof their businesses, supporting

farmers in building sustainable and productive operations, whilst protecting the environment and animal welfare. ‘As finances tighten and skilled, trained labour is harder to source,’ said James, ‘it becomes more tempting to cut corners and push boundaries. However, it is critical to focus on safety management to ensure that all our contracting workforce is kept safe and is supported. I am passionate about farm safety and am honoured to be Chairman and have the unique opportunity to try and make a real difference to our industry.’

UK DRIVERS COULD FACE A FINE FOR EATING OR OPERATING A SAT NAV

UK drivers could face £5,000 fine for eating, fiddling with the radio or operating a satnav at the wheel Motorists who eat food, tune the radio or operate a satnav whilst driving face fines of up to £5,000 for breaching the Highway Code. Volkswagen Financial Services UK is reminding drivers of the code as research from the leading car finance provider shows that 24% of us are planning a domestic road trip this spring.

driving’ offence or be classed as driving without due care and attention. It’s important that everyone is aware of the rules, especially as road trips are likely be longer drives than people are used to. Roads are also expected to be busy this spring after the government announced an end to all remaining Covid restrictions in England.

According to Rule 148 of the Highway Code, drivers must ‘avoid distractions when driving or riding such as...trying to read maps, starting or adjusting any music or radio...eating and drinking’

Rule 150 of the Highway Code states that: “There is a danger of driver distraction being caused by in-vehicle systems such as satellite navigation systems, congestion warning systems, PCs, multi-media, etc.

Motorists who eat food, tune the radio or operate a satnav whilst behind the wheel face hefty fines for breaching the Highway Code.

“You MUST exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. Do not rely on driver assistance systems such as motorway assist, lane departure warnings, or remote control parking. They are available to assist but you should not reduce your concentration levels.”

Volkswagen Financial Services UK is reminding drivers to avoid such behaviours, which can incur a £5,000 fine, as research from the car finance provider shows that 24% of Brits are planning a domestic road trip this spring*. People who’ve had reduced time in the car because of the pandemic should note that, according to Rule 148 of the Highway Code, drivers must “avoid distractions when driving or riding such as...trying to read maps, starting or adjusting any music or radio...eating and drinking.” These behaviours can fall under the ‘careless and inconsiderate

Driving without due care and attention is not necessarily a black and white offence, but any driving that demonstrates lack of alertness to the dangers of the road, or a disregard for other road users (whether deliberate or not), could fall under this category. Other examples of not paying attention while driving may include: allowing yourself to be distracted by passengers in the car, adjusting your seating position, tailgating, lanehogging, and swerving across lanes.

These offences could lead to fines of £5000 and up to nine points on a driver’s license. Some motorists may even be disqualified from driving in serious cases. The enduring popularity of Blighty-based staycations is a continuation of a trend that began in the summer of 2020, with research showing that half of Brits (49%) have become more interested in staycations and road trips as a result of the pandemic. Mike Todd, CEO at Volkswagen Financial Services UK, said: “Not everyone will be aware of these rules in the Highway Code, but it’s vitally important that people understand what they can and can’t do whilst behind the wheel. With Covid restrictions ending in England, we’re likely to see more drivers on the road so it’s important as ever to be alert and undistracted in the car. Knowing and complying with the laws of the road is essential not just to avoid a fine but to keep everyone on our roads safe.” As well as adhering to the Highway Code, being safe on the road also means making sure your vehicle is kept in top working order. CONTINENTAL VF TRACTORMASTER HYBRID TYRE WINS DLG APPROVAL

The Continental VF Hybrid tyre has won the DLG test series, “Agricultural tyres for tractors - Efficiency assessment of premium tyres”.

C

ontinental VF TractorMaster Hybrid tyre wins DLG approval

· The Continental very high flexion (VF) Hybrid pattern tyre is superior to a standard pattern improved flexion (IF) tyre with a fish bone tread pattern · The Continental Hybrid tyre offers labour and fuel savings · The Hybrid tyre becomes the second to receive a DLG approval after the TractorMaster was tested in 2019 The Continental VF Hybrid tyre has won the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (DLG) test series, “Agricultural tyres for tractors – Efficiency assessment of premium tyres”. The Continental TractorMaster Hybrid was compared with another hybrid tyre from a reputable manufacturer and an IF model (Improved Flexion) with a fishbone tread pattern. The DLG stated that hybrid tyres have “great potential in terms of fuel and time savings by doing the same work faster.” Commenting on the test result Benjamin Hübner, Product Line Manager Agricultural Tyres at Continental Commercial Specialty Tyres said: “This result highlights how the new generation of Continental tyres, manufactured at a purpose-built facility in Lousado, Portugal since 2017, are more efficient for a wide range of agricultural work and represent a valuable investment for operators looking for agricultural advantage.”

Potential fuel savings in the field thanks to VF technology In the test DLG assessed the efficiency of premium branded tyres and demonstrated that the Continental tyre, “transmitted significantly higher traction to the ground, than a premium brand IF tyre with a traditional tread pattern.” A standout benefit was the improvement in fuel consumption. The VF technology of the hybrid tyre demonstrated the capacity to carry 40% more load at the same pressure as a standard radial tyre, but with the added benefit of improved fuel efficiency. A 1.8% fuel saving against the IF tyre, and a 0.4% saving over a competitor hybrid tyre, demonstrated that the Continental VF TractorMaster Hybrid was the most fuelefficient for the work carried out in the test on the field.

Block tread pattern better suited to road work The block tread pattern also performed better at uphill work. The test report stated: “The lugs that help transmit the drive power to the ground are stiffer on the hybrid tyre. This means this tyre develops less mould slip. This in turn improves grip by one third.” High tractive performance – low fuel consumption In the field test, the hybrid tyre

delivered the maximum tractive performance, and the fuel consumption was the lowest of all the tyres tested. “We are pleased that the test confirmed the premium quality of our tyres. As part of our ‘Vision 2030’ strategy, we aim to further expand our agricultural tyre business. Our VF TractorMaster Hybrid is a good example of how engineering can help agriculture to reduce fuel consumption and the impact of heavy machines on the land,” concludes Benjamin Hübner. Continental develops pioneering technologies and services for sustainable and connected mobility of people and their goods. Founded in 1871, the technology company offers safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable solutions for vehicles, machines, traffic and transportation. In 2020, Continental generated sales of €37.7 billion and currently employs more than 192,000 people in 58 countries and markets. On October 8, 2021, the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. The Tyres group sector has 24 production and development locations worldwide.
