NEW: KUHN MAXIMA DRILL GOES ON TOUR

The Maxima 3 Tl E is going on tour with a series of on-farm demonstrations scheduled from April 2023

The Maxima 3 TI e is going on tour with a series of on-farm demonstrations scheduled from April 2023. Product specialist Edd Fanshawe explains:

“We are excited to get out on farms throughout the UK to demonstrate what this new model is capable of. It is an opportunity to show operators how the Maxima is capable of performing in a wide variety of soil types.”

The 6-row TI e machine being used for the tour is part of the range that extends up to 12 rows with a telescopic chassis offering row spacings from 45cm up to 80cm. Electric drive technology also enables variation of seed rate. This can be carried out manually from the tractor cab or as determined by a variable rate map.

“Work carried out by KUHN in the development of the

technology showed that varying the seed rate in response to soil conditions can lead to seed savings of 10% when used in conjunction with section control. In addition to seed savings, variable seed rate also optimises plant populations according to available water and soil nutrients, with this resulting in an overall potential yield gain of between 5 and 8% and seeding rates of up to 600,000 plants per hectare,” says Mr Fanshawe.

Maxima 3 precision drills are suitable for drilling maize, sunflower, beetroot, sugar beet, peas, beans, and other crops where row spacings from 45 to 80cm are used. The range includes 12 models in a choice of configurations, with electric drive versions being available in mounted formats including telescopic, foldable, and telescopic with adjustable spacing.

available with ISOBUS compatibility, control can be facilitated from either the tractor terminal or KUHN’s own CCI terminal. With 48-volt electrical power entirely independent of the tractor, constant and smooth operation of the seeding mechanism is maintained, with seed rate variation and section control being instant and precise to avoid any seed wastage,” he adds.

Both mechanical and electric versions of the Maxima 3 range use an improved seed selection and ejection system which enables accurate seed placement at high working speeds of up to 10km/h. Accuracy is also enhanced by a new seeding unit parallelogram which is reinforced in key areas, including at critical hinges and linkages, for added stability, robustness, and longevity.

DELAVEL: OPEN DAY AT ROBOT GRAZING FARM

A new soil test can identify, measure and compare the organic carbon content in a soil sample.

Low Whinholme Farm is throwing open its gates and welcoming visitors to see how it has been successfully grazing cows that are milked by robots. Most farms milking with robots choose to keep cows in all year round. However, the Johnson family has adapted a grazing system to work with its herd and three DeLaval robots.

The herd milk yield has risen by 300 litres per cow per year and the farm is expecting to reach 8000 litres in 2023. Ross Johnson, who manages the farm in partnership with his father and uncle, says:

“We invested in three VMS 310 robots and have 155 milkers on them currently. We wanted to keep the herd out as much as possible so have worked with DeLaval to design a system of gates that see the herd use a series of tracks to ac-

cess fields on rotation.” The robots are split, with one milking the high yielding cows in a separate shed and two further robots dedicated to lower yielding cows.

“We are year-round calving so there is a constant flow of high yielding cows from one shed to the other. We want all the cows to feel the sun on their backs, get fresh air and a break from the concrete. As their yield reduces, we move them to the larger shed where they have full access to graze throughout the day. Keeping existing buildings has saved a significant amount of money and the cows never needed to be rehoused,” he says.

Cow health has improved with SCC’s dropping from 150 to 120 and mastitis cases to just one every 10 weeks. The family praise the teat preparation and robot milking for this, cit-

ing the robot’s ability to learn and log the position of each cow’s teats. The robots have also helped to improve foot health through the installation of a footbath which is largely chemical free and has reduced cases of dermatitis.

“We have also noticed a change in cow behaviour. The herd is calmer and more biddable. We carry out our own AI and the cows are much easier to move into the crush and work with. Mastitis Detection index (MDi) data from the robots has also helped us to monitor conductivity and blood count to catch issues sooner,” he adds.

The open day will take place on April 27th 10:00am-2:00pm at Low Whinholme Farm, Northallerton DL7 0AS. To attend please register online at www.delaval.com .

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETYIMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

Daily and regular checks

By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care.

Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity.

A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

STAY ALERT FOR YELLOW RUST, NOT JUST SEPTORIA

Stay alert for yellow rust risks, and not just Septoria triciti, at the upcoming leaf three spray timing, winter wheat growers are being urged

Stay alert for yellow rust risks, and not just Septoria tritici, at the upcoming leaf three (T1) spray timing, winter wheat growers are being urged.

Although Septoria is widespread, yellow rust can escalate more rapidly, says Syngenta area business manager, Peter Hawkins, and the mild winter means the disease may have already progressed to younger leaves, even if not visible.

“Although Septoria will be the main wheat disease growers will focus on, it’s important not to let yellow rust slip through the net at the important T1 fungicide spray timing, which is typically during April,” says Mr Hawkins.

“The amount of yellow rust in the plant can be reduced by frosts, but temperatures need to be harsher than often realised – for example five days of continuous minus 5-6 deg C. Don’t assume March’s cold weather will have been enough to eradicate rust.

“Depending on the weather, yellow rust can bounce back quickly – going through its life cycle in just 10-12 days, compared with 14-28 days for Septoria tritici. This

explains why it’s so important to halt it early. It can also cause big yield losses of up to 50%.”

In response, Mr Hawkins says ensuring T1 fungicides target yellow rust and not just Septoria will be an important consideration. Leaving yellow rust control to the flag leaf timing (T2) could be too late, he notes.

“AHDB dose response curves show the SDHI fungicide Elatus Era has very strong yellow rust activity, with our own trial work showing T1 is the best time to apply it against yellow rust. This is in addition to the protection it provides against Septoria tritici.

“If you check crops at T1 and think there’s no rust and don’t include a yellow rust active fungicide, you can find soon after T1 that yellow rust has suddenly appeared. I’ve seen this happen. You then have the conundrum of do I go back in with a T1.5 spray for yellow rust, which costs more, or not? If not, then it can cycle again before T2 in suitable weather, so you’re in a real dilemma.

“A particular issue this season is that the mild winter means disease in some fields

has developed at the same rate as wheat plants have been growing. So even if a lower, older leaf has been killed by frost, the disease may have already progressed up into a younger leaf, even though you can’t see it.

“The main aim of T1 is to control disease on leaf three, which is effectively a stepping stone between any disease present on lower leaves and the upper yieldbuilding leaves. These top three leaves contribute about 75% of final winter wheat yield.”

If a suitable T0 fungicide has not been applied before T1, or if there has been a long interval since T0, Mr Hawkins says it could be particularly important to ensure good yellow rust activity is included in the T1 fungicide.

“Inspect crops regularly for signs of yellow rust and take into account variety resistance ratings, but remember that other factors can lead to its rapid flare up, even in more resistant varieties. With heightened Septoria tritici pressures this season, I would also urge growers to look at including the multi-site fungicide, folpet,” he adds.

WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CHANGE A TRACTOR

Landini: When the time is right to change a tractor - choices for renewing your fleet

Tractors have a rather long working life, the duration of which depends on many factors, primarily the level of maintenance and the hours the machine has been in the field. We have talked about the great value of maintenance in several articles. It is essential to take good care of your vehicle, both for better quality and safety of work and so that you do not end up changing parts or having to buy a new model much sooner than expected. That’s why Landini has created Scheduled Maintenance Programmes, designed for the well-being of the machine, the farmer and the business, with a dedicated Landini team

and guaranteed service, for a tractor that always works at high performance.

DISCOVER THE LANDINI SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Added to this is a statistic that is extremely variable depending on the history of the company using the tractor: the hours the tractor has actually worked in the field. As an example, a modern tractor has an average life of 15,000 hours, which is supposed to be completed in 10-15 years. This has changed a lot in the last 20 years, which is why today you can see very different machines

within the same fleet, modern tractors and vehicles that are 30 to 40 years old but still operate well.

This is because for a long time the agricultural sector has been characterised by a high ageing rate and only in recent years has it caught up with other sectors by innovating technology on machines and halving their weight. The target audience has also changed, seeing fewer and fewer small companies in favour of more structured agricultural businesses, with greater demands for state-of-the-art machinery fleets.

BOBCAT UNVEILS WORLD’S FIRST ALL ELECTRIC SKID-STEER LOADER

Bobcat has taken innovation to the next level with the introduction of two new concept machines

Bobcat Unveils World’s First All-Electric SkidSteer Loader and New, All-Electric and Autonomous Concept Machine at CONEXPO

Bobcat has taken innovation to the next level with the introduction of two, new concept machines unveiled during the first day of CONEXPO 2023.

Following the 2022 release of the Bobcat T7X, the world’s first allelectric compact track loader, Bobcat has now unveiled the world’s first all-electric skidsteer loader, the Bobcat S7X. Bobcat has also stepped beyond industry expectations with the unveiling of its new concept track loader, the Bobcat RogueX. This next-generation concept machine explores the capabilities of electric power, autonomous operation and dual lift-arm geometry.

“At Bobcat, we are always pushing the boundaries to explore the next leading advancements that help our customers accomplish more and propel the industry forward,” said Scott Park, Doosan Bobcat CEO and Vice Chairman. “As an organization, we are committed to innovating for our customers’ needs first and foremost, so that they can become more efficient, more productive and more successful.”

About the S7X All-Electric SkidSteer Loader

Like the T7X, the S7X is all electric, as it is powered by a 60.5-kWh, lithium-ion battery,

features electric drive motors and utilizes ball screw actuators for lift and tilt functions.

Together, the battery and electrical powertrain generate incredible performance characteristics, with instantaneous torque that is as much as three times greater than traditional loaders. The powerful loader balances sustainability and performance with zero emissions and is equipped to outperform its diesel-powered equivalent.

This skid-steer loader offers operators a smooth and comfortable experience with minimal vibration and nearly silent operation.

The S7X can operate for up to 8 hours on a single charge depending on the application, giving most operators more than a full day’s work when breaks and downtime are considered. A full charge takes approximately 10 hours.

“As the inventor of the original skid-steer loader, we are excited to take the machine that created the industry and reinvent it all over again,” said Joel Honeyman, Doosan Bobcat Vice President of Global Innovation. “The S7X is an incredible product with real-world application that can support operators on environmentally sensitive sites, in noise-restricted areas and for indoor operation.”

At this time, the S7X skid-steer loader is being debuted as a prototype machine.

RogueX: concept machine that

breaks all the rules

The Bobcat RogueX combines technologically advanced features to make it a one-of-akind conceptual machine. While most closely resembling a track loader, the machine is in a league of its own.

As a research and development project, the machine was built as a proving ground to advance the Bobcat innovation roadmap, evaluate customer perceptions and test the limits of machine functionality.

“RogueX was concepted with consideration for the worksite of the future and how a customer’s needs mayevolve— with a focus on ease of use, remote operations, autonomous functionality, sustainable operations and features that allow operators to accomplish more with one machine,” said Honeyman.

As jobsites change and operators turn to remote operation, Bobcat took its concept further by fully eliminating an operator station. The machine explores the idea of operating where humans cannot go to tackle more work in more places than ever from a remote position.

By building the loader without a cab and using advanced kinematics, RogueX features next-generation unique functionality including both vertical-path and radial-path lift capabilities in one machine.

John Deere will not attend the SIMA show in November 2024 John Deere would like to take this opportunity to inform dealers and customers that they will not be attending the next SIMA show in November 2024 in Paris. One of the main reasons for this decision is to allow greater focus on country specific dealer and customer events throughout 2024.

“COVID 19 has changed the event landscape and the way customers want to interact with us is also evolving,” said Andreas Jess, John Deere Marketing Director for Region 2. “Ag and Turf trade shows are a long-established way of engaging with farmers and

contractors, but we are also exploring alternative communication channels that combine both digital and face-to-face activities. These will allow us to better demonstrate our innovative technologies and production systembased solutions and, at the same time, reach a wider audience.” He added, “customers are increasingly interested in how Precision Ag can support their operations across the entire agricultural production cycle, and this requires a different approach to share ideas and demonstrate solutions.”

The increased focus on in country customer

events will also support John Deere’s transition to a more streamlined business that puts the customer at the centre. It is also a question of utilising resources in the most efficient way over the mid- to long-term. Tilmann Köller, responsible for John Deere Public Relations and Shows & Events for Region 2 adds, “we are currently planning our European dealer and customer events for 2024 which require synchronisation with our markets in North America. The first announcements will be in March 2024, and we are very excited about the news we will share.”

John Deere still sees an important role for trade shows in the future but would welcome international trade fair organisations to review their current timetables to allow greater flexibility for other promotional activities.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER

Fertiliser prices continue to remain high, which makes it ever more important to ensure accurate application of fertilisers again this season. Think about all of the factors that affect spreading, weather and field conditions, operator training and making best use of the technology available all have an impact on accuracy, but with time constraints some of these aspects may get overlooked.

Advice from AHDB last year suggested in some cases a 20% reduction from RB209 recommended rates for machines not set up accurately. With prevailing high prices this year, and perhaps without the benefit of having some fertiliser left in the shed from 2021 when prices were much cheaper, this should be considered if you don’t know how

accurately your machine is set up.

Knowing your machine is in good condition and set up correctly is a good starting point and something that can be easily managed both before and during spreading operations.

Included as part of an NSTS spreader test is a check over the whole machine, paying close attention to the condition of the vanes and agitators. Each product is tested for weight, size and hardness to allow an accurate comparison against manufacturers recommendations for setting up a machine, and adjusted accordingly.

Trays are then laid out across the full width of spread to gain a figure for coefficient of variation (CV). A result of a CV less than 10% is aimed for and in most

cases is achievable.

Having a correctly set up machine will also help you meet obligations to protect the environment. NVZ rules and Farming Rules for Water requires farmers to apply fertiliser as accurately as possible to reduce the risk of pollution. Including a border spreading check when having a spreader tested will help meet these requirements, especially when spreading near watercourses.

For further information, contact NSTS, or go to the website, www. nsts.org.uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

NEW CALVERMAXX SUPPLEMENT MEETS SUCKLER PRE-CALVING DEMANDS

CalverMaxx delivers rumen support and key performance vitamins and minerals ahead of calving

New CalverMaxx supplement meets suckler pre-calving nutrient demands without shifting BCS

CalverMaxx delivers rumen support and key performance vitamins and minerals ahead of calving

In the run-up to calving, suckler producers looking to deliver essential nutrients to cows without making increases to body condition scores will benefit from CalverMaxx, Rumenco’s newest addition to its pre-calving supplement range.

Specially formulated to support the health and performance of pre-calving cows and heifers, CalverMaxx is a palatable, high-sugar product that provides a readily available source of energy to support calf growth, colostrum production and future cow fertility. The high sugar content provides rumen support by feeding rumen microbes to boost rumen function, which in return will optimise available nutrients in every mouthful of forage consumed.

This type of supplement is highly valuable to precalving cows and heifers by delivering essential nutrients. However, some producers fear if cows are supplemented with a nutrient bucket ahead of calving, that there will be

excessive weight gain and larger calves, contributing to calving difficulties. According to Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco, this is not the case with a supplement like CalverMaxx.

“With a daily intake of 200300g per day, the energy delivered from CalverMaxx is not enough to cause cows to become too fat in late pregnancy – especially when on a forage-based diet. Cattle at the ideal BCS of 2.5 and even over conditioned cows will not have weight gain,” explains Dr Bond. “However, there will be adequate intakes to deliver those essential vitamins and minerals, while also providing support to the rumen.”

The importance of meeting pre-calving nutrient demands

Pre-calving nutrition has a significant impact on cow and calf health, especially in the final stages of pregnancy. During the last six weeks of pregnancy, cows are under considerable metabolic stress as the udder prepares for lactation and colostrum production begins.

“The calf is also growing rapidly and demands a high amount of nutrients,” says Dr Bond. “Providing the correct balance of energy, minerals, and vitamins during this period is essential to

prevent metabolic diseases and optimise colostrum production.”

The supplement also contains a full range of trace minerals and vitamins to support cow and calf immunity and subsequent fertility. This includes high levels of iodine and copper, including a protected source of copper, to support calf development and return to oestrus. It also has optimal levels of selenium and vitamin E, including a protected source of selenium, to support colostrum quality, calf vigour, and immunity.

“CalverMaxx also contains the correct balance of calcium and magnesium to help where the potential incidence for milk fever and grass staggers exists, while supporting muscle contraction for the calving process,” says Dr Bond. “The levels of magnesium to achieve this is not possible through drenching or a bolus, and must be through consumption.”

For the majority of suckler systems with forage as its primary feed source, the nutrient benefits received from a multipurpose nutrient and rumen support supplement like CalverMaxx will yield a return on investment. This is paid through supporting healthier calvings, healthier calves and future fertility.

NEW WEAPON IN COMBATTING COCCIDIOSIS

A new product has been introduced by Zoeis to combat Coccidiosis - a constant challenge on many poultry farms

Anew product has been introduced by Zoetis to combat coccidiosis – a constant challenge on many poultry farms with the full extent of the problem often not appreciated.

The pathogens Eimeria maxima, Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria tenella are three species that commonly cause coccidiosis in broilers, which can have very significant economic impacts.

Ionophores are widely used for control, but resistance can start to build up over time. The new synthetic coccidiostat Avi-Deccox has been launched by Zoetis to counter this build-up of resistance as part of an overall control programme. This is a reformulation of ‘Deccox’, containing decoquinate as the active ingredient, with uniformly sized, dust-free granules and increased flowing ability.

“Many businesses

rely very heavily on ionophores in their control programmes and there’s often a reluctance to rotate treatments, adding to the risk of resistance building up,” said John Kenyon, national veterinary manager at Zoetis. “When using an ionophore, you should carefully consider how long it is used for before switching to a product from another anticoccidial class. The different mode of action with synthetic or ‘chemical’ coccidiostats such as Avi-Deccox achieves a greater knock-down in the short term, and they can be incorporated for brief periods into a rotational programme before switching back to an ionophore”.

Kenyon recommends the use of lesion scoring alongside coccidiosis control programmes. “If you suspect a problem, arrange for your vet or area manager to do lesion scoring at key periods in the cycle when you would expect to see clinical signs of coccidiosis infection –

typically with the two birds at three to four weeks of age. This will give you the best insight into the challenges being faced by the birds”.

“Other indicators of possible coccidiosis issues can be inferior gut health, birds flicking feed from the pan and undigested feed in the droppings. You may see mucus or gut lining within the droppings or in older broilers even large amount blood in their droppings and increased mortalities. There can also be more subtle signs such as water consumption irregularities”.

Coccidiosis is ubiquitous in poultry production. The highly resistant features of oocysts in the house environment, coupled with the extremely high replicative capacity make it unfeasible to completely remove the challenges from poultry houses, so businesses need careful planning of intelligent coccidiosis control programmes.

BATTLE FOR SHOPPERS HEATS UP AS GROCERY PRICE INFLATION HITS HIGH

Grocery price inflation has climbed again to reach 17.5% over the four weeks to 19th March 2023.

Grocery price inflation has climbed again to reach 17.5% over the four weeks to 19 March 2023, a new record based on Kantar’s market data. Households are now facing an £837 increase in their annual bills if they don’t change their shopping behaviours. Take-home grocery sales more widely grew by 8.6% over the 12 week period.

“Unfortunately, it’s more bad news for the British public, who are experiencing the ninth month of double-digit grocery price inflation,” said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar. “However, shoppers are taking action and clearly hunting around for the best value. Footfall was up in every single grocer this month, with households going to the shops just over four times

per week in March. Apart from Christmas, that’s the highest frequency we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic.

“The supermarkets are also tackling grocery price inflation, battling it out to demonstrate value and get customers through their doors. This is a fiercely competitive sector and if people don’t like the prices in one store they will go elsewhere, with consumers visiting three or more of the top 10 retailers in any given month on average.”

Across the retailers Lidl was the fastest growing supermarket as its sales rose by 25.8%. It achieved a market share of 7.4%. Aldi secured a new record market share this month at 9.9%, driven by a 25.4% increase in its sales.

Morrisons saw a welcome return to growth with sales rising by 0.1%, giving it an 8.8% market share. Waitrose also had a positive period, pushing up sales by 2.1% to deliver the fastest rate of growth for the John Lewis Partnership owned supermarket since September 2021.

Asda’s sales increased by 7.3%, just ahead of both Tesco and Sainsbury’s on 6.9%. Tesco remains Britain’s largest grocer with a 26.9% share of the market, while Sainsbury’s is on 14.8% and Asda 14.3%. Frozen specialist Iceland performed strongly, increasing its market share to 2.3%, up 0.1 percentage point as sales rose by 9.6%. Convenience retailer Coop now has a 5.7% share and Ocado’s market share remained at 1.8%.

ISUZU UK HAS CONTINUED TO INCREASE PICK-UP REGISTRATIONS

January 2023 registrations over 100% up from January 2022 despite the ongoign market issues leading to strains on vehicle supply

Isuzu UK has continued to increase pick-up registrations, with January 2023 registrations over 100% up from January 2022 despite the ongoing market issues leading to strains on vehicle supply.

With the LCV market slowly picking back up amidst global supply troubles, Isuzu UK remains in an exceptionally positive position, with overall registrations for January increasing by 102% compared to January 2022. This two-fold increase in registrations is largely thanks to Isuzu UK’s double cab automatic pick-ups, which alone witnessed an astounding 319% increase in registration for January 2023 compared to January 2022. Additionally, a registration increase of 385% for single cab 4x4 manuals this January

compared to last also massively contributed to Isuzu UK’s overall registrations for the month.

Alan Able, Managing Director of Isuzu UK, said: “We are thrilled to see a significant increase in vehicle registrations in January, which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated dealer network. Their tireless efforts to provide exceptional service to our customers have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for their continued support. It is so encouraging to see demand for Isuzu’s vehicles continue to grow, and I am sure this will be a record-breaking year for the brand.”

Earning multiple awards for 2023, the Isuzu D-Max’s exceptional capability combined with refined

levels of comfort are key contributing factors to the persistent increase in registrations. Kicking off the year with three awards, the D-Max was awarded the title of Pick-Up of the Year by Company Car & Van, 4x4, and What Van? Magazines. Increased demand for the Award-Winning Isuzu D-Max range can be attributed to the vehicle’s outstanding overall performance, which is reflected with each award.

The Award-Winning Isuzu D-Max range offers a variety of body styles (single, extended, doublecab) to cater to all needs. The Utility specification is aimed at businesses with features like vinyl flooring, cloth upholstery and automatic lights & wipers. The All-Purpose and Adventure models offer more SUV-like features, like keyless entry, climate control, leather interior, reversing camera, and multimedia systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A five-year / 125,000mile warranty and five-year roadside assistance are also provided, with the vehicle range boasting a 3.5-tonne maximum towing capacity and 1-tonne payload.
