Get onTrak

Innovative GPS guidance system

............................................................................................................................................................................................... onTrak, a new tractor GPS system set to bring affordable guidance to a much broader range of farming businesses will be on show at Grassland and Muck at Stoneleigh Park on 24-25th May. This innovative smart farming tool has been developed by British specialist supplier Agricision, is already helping farmers increase efficiency, with more than 120 units sold since its launch at the beginning of the year. onTrak, which uses a patent pending combined receiver and lightbar operated via an iPad or iPhone, offers a cost effective guidance solution. It is quick and simple to set up, easy to operate and swap between tractors or other vehicles. The onTrak receiver is a robust waterproof unit which simply adheres magnetically to the bonnet of the tractor, placing the lightbar clearly in the eyeline of the driver. There is no need to glance backwards and forwards to a monitor or look down at the dashboard, so operator accuracy is boosted and fatigue significantly cut, leading to improved performance. Leading optometrist Neil Frost comments, “Positioning the device on the bonnet of the tractor rather than within the cab greatly reduces the accommodative effort of the user’s eyes and leads to a better experience and reduced fatigue.”

Positioning the GPS receiver on the bonnet also improves responsiveness, since it is in line with the tractor’s front wheels rather than behind them as is the case with in-cab systems. It is set up and controlled via a free App downloaded to the iPad or iPhone which connects wirelessly using Bluetooth. To begin guidance in the field, the operator inputs the implement width and sets the A-B line which creates the guidance lines for the task in hand. When driving on the line, a single green light shows in the centre of the lightbar with flashing or continuous red lights activated if the tractor is driven off course. Guidance records can be stored against a field name for future use before moving onto the next field, and guidance can be paused to refill a sprayer or spreader for example, resuming when returning to the stop point. GPS correction signals are obtained from any freely available satellite source and accuracy meets the industry standard of 20cm pass-topass. The receiver is powered by an onboard battery with 24 hours operating capacity, rechargeable via a standard USB cable. Adam Keene, Director of Agricision comments: “onTrak does not need a data connection or require a subscription and is designed to be simple to operate,

convenient and versatile, making use of an iPad or iPhone which most farmers and operators will already have.” “It is ideal for mixed and dairy farmers who don’t need sophisticated auto steer systems but can benefit from the increased accuracy offered by guidance. It will also give contractors the opportunity to offer their customers GPS-ready services, whilst in addition we see it as a useful guidance solution for tasks such as rolling or cultivating for larger arable enterprises when the most highly equipped tractors are tied up.” “It is so versatile and easy to fit that the onTrak could be on a 150hp tractor with a set of Cambridge rolls one minute and a buggy spreading slug pellets the next.” Dairy farmer Jack Griffiths of Taynton Court Farms, Gloucestershire is already seeing the benefits of onTrak: “We just needed something simple and quick to use for spreading on grassland. The onTrak connects straight up to my phone which I have with me all day and the app is very simple to use.” “We have a few tractors and often hire others in and the onTrak can easily go onto any of the machines with no hassle. I have already done a fair bit of spreading work with and it has been perfect for the job, I’m very pleased with it.” AgriNews | May 2017 | 3

Case IH and Vaderstad Smash maize planting world record

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Case IH and Väderstad smash maize planting world record as Magnum 380 CVX powers team to triumph in Hungary Case IH and Väderstad smash maize planting world record as Magnum 380 CVX powers team to triumph in Hungary Magnum flagship operates Väderstad Tempo L 16 planter to cover 502.05 hectares in 24hrs / Breaks previous record of 448.29 hectares / Commercial crop to be taken through to harvest – full agronomy guidelines followed / CVX transmission proves ideal to quickly attain full working speed when starting each pass Case IH has helped smash the world record for the area of maize planted in 24 hours, using a Magnum 380 CVX tractor with a 16-row Väderstad Tempo L planter to cover 502.05 hectares, breaking the previous record of 448.29 hectares. Working in two fields on a farm in western Hungary, the combination was used to apply not just seed, but also fertiliser and insecticide. Planting at 30in (76.2cm) row spacings, the combination covered 12.19m in each run, with Case IH AccuGuide auto-steering used to deliver straight and accurate passes at working speeds up to 24kph, and 2.0cm pass-to-pass accuracy provided by Case IH’s exclusive RTK+ correction signal network, which covers most of Europe – including all of Hungary – via more than 1,000 RTK stations. The ISOBUS task controller in the Case IH AFS Pro 700 terminal enabled individual management of each of the 16 row units on the planter, to ensure precise switch-on/off at the headland. The Magnum 380 CVX with continuously variable transmission was chosen for 6 | May 2017 | AgriNews

the record attempt not only for its fuel efficiency and ease of use, but also as it helped to quickly accelerate the tractor and implement up to the optimum working speed when pulling away from the headland at the beginning of each pass. With 221 litres/minute of oil flow available from the tractor, the Magnum 380 CVX also provided plenty of hydraulic flow to ensure the planter’s fans were never short of oil. While this was a record attempt, it was done to exact agronomic guidelines, ensuring that the maize was planted with the same care and attention to detail – in terms of seed spacing and depth – that any farmer would use. The quality of work during the record event was monitored by staff from Gödöllő University.

Sets World Record for most soybean harvested within eight hours

............................................................................................................................................................................................... ·CR8.90 soybean harvesting world record: 439.730 tonnes in 8 hours ·CR Series – a record-breaking combine range New Holland Agriculture has set a new World Record by harvesting a massive 439.730 tonnes of soybean in eight hours with the CR8.90 combine harvester. The record-breaking performance, which took place in the Bahia State of Brazil, was certified by independent adjudicator RankBrasil. “By setting the world record for harvesting over 439 tonnes of soybean, the CR8.90 is following in the footsteps of the CR10.90, world record title holder in wheat since 2014,” commented Lars Sørensen, Head of Harvesting Product Management. “The CR8.90 delivered this outstanding performance in exceptionally high yield crop: 4,886 kg/ha, far above the

average 3,600 kg that is the norm in Brazil. The records set by the two models demonstrate the exceptional capacity and productivity of the CR Series combines.” CR8.90 soybean harvesting world record: 439.730 tonnes in 8 hours The record was set on April 5, 2017 at the Villa Panambi farm belonging to the Mingori Brothers, in the Bahia State of Brazil, with the support of their dealer Jaraguá Bahia, based in nearby Luiz Eduardo Magalhães City. On record setting day, moisture was high due to 20mm rain at 5:00 am, and temperature ranged from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Harvesting started at 10:30 am and finished at 18:30 pm, having harvested approximately 90 hectares. The CR8.90’s average throughput was 54.97 tonnes/hour in a crop yielding an average of 4.88 tonnes/h and an average moisture content of 17%. The record-setting performance was achieved using just 1.84 litres of fuel per tonne of soybean harvested. The entire performance was overseen and verified by an official adjudicator from independent organisation RankBrasil, which certified the record. CR Series – a record-breaking combine range The CR8.90 follows on the footsteps of the range topping CR10.90, which proved it is the world’s highest capacity combine when it captured the World Record for harvesting an impressive 797.656 tonnes of wheat in eight hours in 2014 – a title it holds to this day.

Prices boom!

Organic Cattle Prices Boom in Scotland

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Recent spring sale averages in Scotland have achieved some outstanding prices, and show a real boom in demand for organic cattle, something that the Scottish Organic Producers Association (SOPA) have been predicting since the beginning of the year. Spring sales at Dumfries and Thainstone markets earlier last month saw some exceptional trade for organic cattle, a positive result for the organic industry in Scotland. The trade at Dumfries was at a record high at their organic spring sale on the 17th of April. Organic store bullocks averaged 282.4 p/kg, whilst organic store heifers averaged 242.3p/kg. Gross prices increased by £221.42 on the year with demand significantly outstripping supply. Thainstone’s spring sale was a success too. Held on

10 | May 2017 | AgriNews

the 22nd of April, organic bullocks averaged between 314.3p and 348.5p per kg, an increase of 72.3p on the year, whilst organic heifers averaged between 288.8p and 324p per kg, an increase of +66p on the year. With the prime organic beef price currently achieving 480p per kg (deadweight) organic beef finishers are clearly keen to secure supplies of store cattle. The recent uplift in demand happily coincided with Great British Beef Week (23rd April – 1st May), an annual event that takes place each year to raise awareness of the quality and versatility of assured British beef, and give the industry a much-needed boost. Joanna Sinclair, Membership Support Officer at SOPA, had the following to say about the surge in demand:

“SOPA has been predicting a boom for organic cattle for several months. We know by speaking to our members and our trade contacts that there are not enough organically certified cattle in the supply chain and the growing consumer demand looks like this boom will continue indefinitely.” She continued: “This is good news for converting beef farmers who will be producing organic cattle to meet future demand. Certified organic farmers who are in the midst of spring calving are also feeling confident there is a likely future demand in the organic supply chain for their organic cattle.”

Beef production

Open day to focus on future of UK beef production

............................................................................................................................................................................................... New opportunities for UK beef producers will be highlighted at a Beef Improvement Group open day at JSR Wold Farm’s feed evaluation unit in East Yorkshire on 24th May 2017. The event marks the conclusion of a successful five-year research programme to develop the first Net Feed Efficiency Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) and will afford visitors the opportunity to hear about the project’s next steps followed by a tour of the Givendale Stabiliser suckler herd. The project to develop the first Net Feed Efficiency EBV has been funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, as part of a drive to improve sustainable protein production. It has been managed by the Beef Improvement Group (BIG) with support from JSR Farms, Alltech/Keenan and SAC Consulting, with all partners scheduled to be present at the open day. The new genetic indicator will apply to the UK’s fastest growing cattle breed, the Stabiliser, and will allow beef producers to adopt new breeding strategies to reduce feed costs whilst also improving their environmental credentials through lower greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to presentations from project partners, the open day will provide an opportunity to hear the experiences of other Stabiliser breeders, through a formal presentation as well as through informal discussions over lunch or during the afternoon tour. To register for the event contact Ursula Taylor at the Stabiliser Cattle Company office, phoning 01377 227790 or by emailing ursula. taylor@jsr.co.uk

New from Stihl

STIHL unveil new ultra-compact Cordless Chainsaw for 2017

............................................................................................................................................................................................... As the world’s leading manufacturer of chainsaws and garden power tools, we understand what our customers need to get the job done as effectively and easily as possible. For more than 90 years, new innovations from STIHL have shaped the industry, from the original petrol chainsaw to the incredible Compact Cordless MSA 120 C-BQ, we are always looking to push technology further. For 2017, the STIHL range expands once again, although this time into new, unprecedented territory, with the launch of the new ultra-compact MSA 100 B-NS1 cordless chainsaw. This new product is perfect for maintaining smaller shrubs, and was developed after a meeting with the Bonsai Appreciation Society of Great Britain highlighted a small but important gap in the market. Subsequently, extensive market research showed a lack of fit-for-purpose, precision tools were leaving Bonsai gardeners having to cultivate and maintain their gardens by hand. With one keen miniature gardener, Mr H. Prunier from Yorkshire, explaining the impact this has had on them:

The lack of adequate tools for Bonsai trees has had a major impact on my health. For years, I have been forced to try and maintain my trees with a range of objects that were less than perfect for the job. 40 years of using nail scissors to prune my garden has resulted in great sales for my local chemist, but a tiresome experience for me. Without specialist products, this problem will continue. Launched at RHS Garden Wisley and tested extensively with their team in the Bonsai gardens, the new MSA 100 B-NS1 chainsaw features many of the same features as its bigger brothers, yet is the first chainsaw in history that runs on cell batteries, offering high power and long-life performance at an extremely low price. Bonsai Chainsaw Weighing in at just 50 grams, this is also the lightest power tool ever made, and like our other cordless saws, the MSA 100 B-NS1 is extremely quiet, agile and manoeuvrable. Speaking after the launch of the new MSA 100 B-NS1 at RHS Garden Wisley, Mr T Cutter, Chairman of the Bonsai Appreciation Society of Great Britain, spoke of his enthusiasm for the new product: I’m delighted to witness the launch of this revolutionary new chainsaw from STIHL. As a keen miniature arboriculturalist I am aware of the capabilities of the STIHL range. However, this is the first time that I have seen a saw so perfectly suited to my passion. It’s so nice to finally see the Bonsai community get the modern tools we’ve been craving. It’s a genuine game-changer. Also in attendance at the launch of the new chainsaw was Paul Hicks, Senior Product Manager for STIHL GB, who was delighted by the capabilities of the new saw: STIHL aims to provide tools for gardeners of all abilities and passions. Whatever task you need doing, we will have a product to perfectly suit. With this in mind, it was only a matter of time before we filled this gap in our product range. We always want to put our customers first, and we hope the new MSA 100 B-NS1 will find its way into the hearts and tool-sheds of many Bonsai gardeners. The ultra-compact cordless range opens up a whole range of opportunities for STIHL, and we will be looking at what products could potentially be added in future.

The government has today set out initial plans to update temporary measures in place to reduce the risk of avian flu in England, after the current Prevention Zone expires on 28 February 2017. Based on the latest situation and current scientific advice from the Chief Veterinary Officer, from 28 February the government anticipates adopting a more targeted approach with mandatory biosecurity measures across the country and continued housing or range netting in higher risk areas. These measures would be reviewed at the end of April. Currently, anyone who

keeps poultry or captive birds is required by law to house them, or otherwise keep them separate from wild birds, to reduce the risk of disease spreading. This requirement remains in place until 28 February and guidance on how to comply is available online. The proposed temporary measures are designed so keepers can allow birds outside from 28 February, whilst still taking reasonable precautions against avian flu during the current outbreak. A final decision will be confirmed at the end of February. Public Health England advises that the risk to public health from avian flu is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said there is no food safety risk for UK consumers. Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens said: Effective disease control will always be

our priority. Based on the current situation, we believe mandatory biosecurity across England, combined with targeted housing or range netting in higher risk areas, is the best option to control disease, protect birds’ welfare and ensure consumers can buy free range products. We have acted swiftly to limit the spread of H5N8, including requiring all birds to be housed or kept separate from wild birds. The twelve week housing requirement has allowed keepers time to introduce stricter biosecurity measures and our intention now is to lift this from 28 February. Current rules on housing still remain in place until then, but we are setting out plans now to give people time to prepare. We will keep this decision under review. H5N8 continues to circulate in wild birds and poultry keepers must remain vigilant. This proposal does not mean a return to business as usual and we will continue to do everything we can to reduce the risk from this disease.

National Sprayer Testing

Fertiliser Spreader Testing– Ian Forman, NSTS Manager

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) introduced the Fertiliser Spreader Testing Scheme in September 2015 as a nationally recognised test enabling machine owners to have their equipment checked and the results registered. We understand that farmers make a huge investment in a wide range of fertiliser spreading equipment and it’s therefore imperative an even spread pattern is achieved ensuring each kilogram of fertiliser produces the best return in terms of yield at harvest time. Although not a statutory requirement, crop assurance organisations require proof of calibration. An extremely useful addition to this would be to have machines independently checked and a tray test carried out. The tray test confirms coefficient of variation (CV) across the full width of spread with the explicit aim of achieving a result below 10% for all products tested. This offers customers peace of mind they are achieving the best value for money from an expensive and important crop input. Accurate application is equally important when considering the environment. Many fields are now bordered with conservation headlands which often require a low nutrient status. The avoidance of spreading nitrogen onto these areas is necessary and the impact can be greatly reduced with spreader testing and checking the headland spreading mechanism as well as full width spreading to give further peace of mind. Watercourses are also in the spotlight and avoidance of all non-target area spreading will help achieve these goals.

NSTS Examiners use an App to record the results of the test which also calculates the CV in the field allowing the farmer to see the results immediately and discuss any improvements that may need to be made. On completion of the test the results are recorded on the NSTS Database and a full report sent via email to the machine owner. This can then be referred to when setting up the machine for different products during the season. We strongly encourage operators to carry out regular maintenance throughout the year to ensure their equipment is applying fertilisers safely and accurately. Keeping an eye on the condition of the discs and vanes on disc spreaders is very important as wear on the vanes during the season could affect the spread pattern greatly. An NSTS test on a machine ensures the owner is getting the most out of the fertilisers being spread which in turn helps to protect the environment and waterways. Protocols have been published for all types of spreading systems including spinning disc, pneumatic and oscillating spout. All NSTS Spreader Examiners hold the Level 3 City & Guilds qualification in Fertiliser Spreader Testing.

National Sprayer Testing

and the recent changes in legislation

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Sprayer testing and the recent changes in legislation – Ian Forman NSTS Manager As part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing in Europe became a legal requirement from 26th November 2016. Sprayer testing has been part of crop assurance protocols for many years but now all professional users will have to get their machines tested. Slug pellet applicators, granular applicators, seed treatment equipment and weed wipers are some of the other machines that now need testing. There are variations in timescales of retest dates depending on the size or type of equipment so check the NSTS website www. nsts.org.uk for full details. Knapsack, handheld and pedestrian sprayers do not require an NSTS test but must be inspected on a regular basis by a competent person, repairs made and a record kept of that inspection. With Brexit just around the corner we are being asked what will happen with sprayer testing in the UK once we have left the EU. One thing is certain, the UK must continue to trade with the rest of Europe so whatever we do will have to be as good as the European standard or better for them to accept our produce. A new standard for sprayer testing is now being applied and you will see additional test items the next time you have your sprayer tested. Induction hoppers cannot let anything larger than a 20mm ball pass through and if your sprayer is fitted with a drain for the tank,

that this allows safe emptying and does not contaminate the operator or the environment. Machine examiners are also carrying out 2 checks on electronic controllers; a flow rate check which is combined when doing the nozzle flow rates and also checking the forward speed is reading correctly by timing the sprayer over a 100 metre run. It is a requirement of crop assurance that a calibration is carried out regularly and this could be completed at the same time as the NSTS test. We strongly encourage operators to carry out regular maintenance throughout the year to ensure their equipment is applying pesticides safely and accurately and an operator check sheet is available from the NSTS website to download. The most common faults found during the test are leaks and drips, but dirty filters and worn nozzles are also regularly seen. All sprayer tests are now recorded electronically and you will receive a link via email to view your certificate, at the same time the test is registered with NSTS. An NSTS test on your machine ensures that you are compliant with the legislation but also that it is safe to use and will apply pesticides safely and accurately. It also helps to reduce costly downtime, very important when the window for timely applications can be quite narrow during the season. For more details of NSTS visit the website www.nsts.org.uk

Arctic Cat

Key strategies and initiatives announced

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Textron specialised vehicles held a special event in Dallas, Texas, where several key strategies and initiatives were announced. All snowmobiles will continue to be manufactured and distributed under the brand name of Arctic Cat utilising the great brand heritage in the Snow business. Arctic Cat dirt products will in the future be rebranded into the ‘Textron Off Road” brand. We can assure you that the decision to move away from the Arctic Cat brand for dirt products was not taken easily and might emotionally hurt all our green bleeding hearts, but with the new Textron Off Road brand comes great opportunities that will lead to stronger presence and sales in the future. Textron Off Road is synonymous with the world-renowned brands that Textron has to offer and we are proud to be a part of the same company that delivers state of the art jets, planes, high performance engines, heavy duty commercial vehicles and military systems and that now will bring that same technology and power to our off road consumer products. Though delivering Off Road Vehicles under 24 | May 2017 | AgriNews

the Textron Off Road branding soon, we will keep the well accepted product categories “Alterra”, “Wildcat” and “Prowler”. While keeping our weil accepted product categories, this integration will present new opportunities for you. Arctic Cat distributors and dealers will in the near future have access to a much wider Textron Specilised Vehicle product portfolio. By utilising common channels for manufacturing and distribution as well as the great power of Textron, we will become a bigger player among the industry, which will also grow your business as our partner. Soon you will start to see new products, which are the result of this strategy. A brand new high performance/utility vehicle developed by Textron Off Road will be available in a few months. The highlighted features are a 100+ engine, class leading suspension and storage and an extended cab. The Wildcat XX, which was already introduced to the public, will be available in your showrooms in spring 2018. Those who had the chance to ride that beast know that it is worth waiting for it. As this is the start of

the integration it will take some time to work on transition details and to define a winning product portfolio also for European regulatory needs, but we are really excited about the upcoming future and new products. Becoming a part of the Textron family now opens new horizons, for distributors, dealers, consumers, and our Arctic Cat employees as well. This is big news for all of us and it might take some time to fully understand all details, but I can assure you, being a lifelong powersports and outdoor enthusiast, I could not be more excited about the future opportunities for our common business. We will follow up with additional information regarding the next steps soon. Mag. Markus Ferch.
