ockley and District Horticultural Society have opened their trading hut and will be open from 10am - 12 noon, every Sunday morning until Sunday 29th October 2017. We are located behind Hawkwell Village Hall with free parking. We have compost, grow bags and all sorts of fertilisers, all at very competitive prices. Membership is £3 per family per year. There is also friendly advice on various aspects of gardening.

here must be many people living in Hawkwell or Hockley who do not know of the whereabouts of the original Village School. If you are coming from Hockley, down the Main Road to Hawkwell, look to the right at the Zebra crossing. Right there was the school which was demolished in the 1980’s. It was built on land given by the Lord of the Manor of Clements – it cost £300 to build. The Lord of the Manor stipulated that if it ever ceased to be used for educational purposes it was to be demolished and proceeds of the sale given to his descendants. After looking into all kinds of ways of using the school by different organizations no one seemed to want it so, sadly, it had to go. The Westerings took its place and, in view of the increase of traffic through Hockley and the increase of children, in the end it was probably the safest thing. All entries have to be about Essex and the People, Places and events that are and happen in Essex. If a painting/photograph or craft is entered, that has nothing to do with the Essex then it will be displayed but not entered into the competition. The Committee of Management will make the decision on who is entered into the competition and who is only displayed. So do not enter a stock picture you have done in the past. There is no limit on the size of the Oil, Acrylic and other Canvases this year but if you enter a big picture please provide your own stand.
This money will go to our chosen charity for the day, which is the Thursday Art Group at the Old Fire Station. Children can either draw or paint their own picture but if they are only colouring we can provide a set colouring sheet for them to use. Their pictures should be no bigger than A4. CHILDRENS ENTRIES ARE FREE. All entries need to handed in by 14th October to 43 Oak Walk, Hockley, Essex, SS5 5AR and collected on the day or arranged for collection from the Secretaries house. The prizes will presented in Cheque form or gift card no cash is given. Runners up prizes will be items of art or craft equipment.
Water colour, pencil drawings and colour pencil drawings must be no bigger than A3. Photographs can be up to A4 in size. Craft items must be either an Essex Craft or a model that is relevant to Essex. ADULT ENTRIES ARE £2 AN ENTRY.

ayleigh Recycling Centre in Castle Road is controlled by Essex County Council and they have now made some vehicle and site restrictions changes. We believe that some of these restrictions are the reason we are getting a massive increase in fly tipping. You can draw your own conclusions by reading the following information taken from their website: 24/7/09 9:07 am Page 1 “Vans, pick-ups and other commercial-type vehicles – including those privately owned - are not allowed to use this site. Customers attempting to park prohibited vehicles outside the site and carry waste in will be turned away. Rayleigh recycling centre only accepts the following amounts of DIY waste: • In any 28-day period you may not exceed three wheelbarrow loads (one car boot) of soil, hardcore or gypsum-based products including plasterboard and dry wall lining • In any six-month period you may not exceed three large ceramic items (e.g. toilet or wash basin), one uPVC or wooden window frame, one uPVC or wooden door, three wooden internal doors or any elements of a built-in kitchen Your nearest recycling centre that accepts vans and limited DIY waste is Pitsea. What you cannot bring to recycling centres: Asbestos, chemicals and other toxic substances, clinical waste, dead animals, fireworks, ammunition and explosives, fuel, hazardous waste, Japanese knotweed, landlord’s waste, pesticides, poisons and trade or commercial waste”.
