Why are Promotions for Women far less than that of men even today?

D

espite being mentored as thoroughly as their male counterparts or even more so, many women are still not progressing into higher management positions. Are women as likely as men to get mentoring? Yes. Actually, more so: In the 2008 Catalyst survey,

83%

of women and 76% of men say they’ve had at least one mentor at some point in their careers. In fact,

21%

of women say they’ve had four or more mentors, compared with 15% of men. Does mentoring provide the same career benefits to men and women? No Among survey participants who had active mentoring relationships in 2008,

72% of the men had received one or more promotions by 2010, compared with 65% of the women

It can seem that the proverbial glass ceiling has not disappeared completely, rather it has only developed some degree of permeability that sees today’s professional woman making progress in certain areas while falling short in others despite being as qualified as their male counterparts. Based on a corporate study for gender diversity in 20 countries, 59% of the companies offer networking programs and internally led mentoring while 28% offers programs geared specifically towards women. This raises the question whether this will lead to appointment and promotions of both sexes in equal proportions. – Harvard Business Review, September 2010 Despite being equally mentored, research shows that women are still behind in the number of promotions received compared to their male counterparts. This is primarily due what we uncovered as sponsorship, where a mentor takes a step beyond giving advices and feedback and vouches for their mentee using their influence in a particular sector or organization. According to Harvard Business Review this is what is lacking in female mentorship. It was also noted that women are ‘overmentored’ and ‘undersponsored’ when compared to their male counterparts and as a result they don’t advance as quickly in their organization. Women are not only less likely to be appointed in top positions in their organization without sponsorship but they are also more reluctant to go for them.

Programs that get results clarify and communicate goals, match sponsors and mentees on the basis of those goals, coordinate corporate and regional efforts, train sponsors, and hold sponsors accountable Idea in Brief: Although women are mentored, they’re not being promoted. A Catalyst study of more than 4,000 high potentials shows that more women than men have mentors—yet women are less likely to advance in their careers. That’s because they’re not actively sponsored the way the men are.

Sponsors go beyond giving feedback and advice; they advocate for their mentees and help them gain visibility in the company. They fight to get their protégés to the next level. Organizations such as Deutsche Bank, Unilever, Sodexo, and IBM Europe have established sponsorship programs.

Why mentoring fails women and how does sponsoring differ from mentoring? See Part 2.

Christmas Tree I 6 Putting Up Your

t is funny how Christmas always seems to come around faster than it did the previous year. Well it’s that time of year again and despite all of the shopping panic and craziness, the hustle and bustle it is hard not to love this time of year. So, if you’re feeling particularly like Scrooge this year it may be wise to shake the feeling from early because sooner or later it gets you whether you like it or not.

One of the first steps to start embracing the Christmas spirit is to put up the Christmas tree. It is a tradition that the whole family loves and they can share in the experience of decorating the tree, here are a couple of Your Style tips:

1

It is always best to put your Christmas tree up as early as possible like the beginning of the month. Today is the sixth day of the month so if you haven’t mounted your tree as yet I suggest you do so now to enjoy it as much a possible before the season ends..Don’t you just love coming home every day and seeing the tree as it is a constant reminder of this special time of year.

Decoration makes a statement about a tree, so you should know what type of statement you want your tree to make. They don’t have to be expensive, but make sure they are of good quality and that they look fabulous.

It is not too early to buy gifts so if you have bought some presents already, wrap them and place them under the tree. It adds to the fun and anticipation of it all.

7

Some people have a rule to have their tree down by the New Year but there is nothing worse than seeing a Christmas tree in someone’s house well into January. In light of it all don’t forget the reason for the season and make it a special one by sharing the joy and love with friends and families.

advertisment

Decorations are reusablebut try to add new decorations every 2-3 years, so that you are reminded of the time you bought them, or who you received them from. The choice of tree is really a personal choice it is real or fake However if you consider global warming and its effects on the environment a fake tree would be best and its being reusable is an added bonus but make sure it is of good quality. Lights are a key fact for any Christmas tree, the choice of lights is a personal preference but we suggest white lights or uniform coloured lights as opposed to different colours. Also don’t forget to unplug your light before going to bed.
