Five Memorable characters “

he list of embarrassing family members varies quite a bit from person to person but there are always a few mainstays. That uncouth cousin who feels the need to always present himself whenever you have visitors, the uncle whose jokes aren’t funny but still feels that he needs to tell them over and over again, and of course, there is your mom who must always reach for those embarrassing childhood pictures, especially those of you sitting on the “potty”. Every family has its dysfunctional relatives and as uncomfortable as they may make you feel in a given situation, family gatherings would not have been the same without some of these memorable characters. Let’s see if our readers can identify with a few of these encounters. The Educated The first one in the family to attend a tertiary institution and will remind everyone at every chance he/she gets, plus always correcting everybody’s sentence structure and pronunciation. “The word is loose and not lose as in your shoelaces are loose”. By the way, did I mention that this is his/her “pet peeve”?

Truth be told, every family has its dysfunctional relatives, and as angry as they may make you feel in a given situation, family gatherings would not have been the same without some of these memorable characters.

this family anyway.”

The Shiner “Oh, I tell you it’s the best decision I have made changing that X5 to the new Range Rover,” says the Shiner, who is always the last one to attend a family reunion so as to make a grand entrance showing off their new ride. You can’t help but notice because you had no choice but to know that last year they had an X5.

The Moralist No one ever wants to be caught alone with the moralist because they know they are about to be lectured on some topic that they are certainly not interested in. “Gary, you and this girl have been together about nine years now, don’t you think it’s time to put a ring on her finger and start going to church? Remember that fornication is a sin son.” Dealing with these types of people can be quite a challenge, but let’s face the fact that it is not always about you. Think about how boring and bland it would be if everyone was just like you. advertisment

The Heir This individual has not had much success in life but really doesn’t mind, as he/she can live pretty comfortable from inheritance. As soon as someone gets on this person’s nerve he/she thinks it’s time for that person to vacate the house. “This is the house my daddy left me and I do not want him here. Besides he is lazy.” Somehow, the heir has completely forgotten that he/she has never worked for anything. The Victim Always self-destructive and feels the only means of justification is to blame others for the way life has turned out. He/she feels that because their parents are not wealthy and their uncle is well-off, then it is his responsibility to provide assistance. This person’s way of living is waiting on handouts. When things do not go the way he/she would like, the response is predictable. “That’s not fair and besides, no one likes me in

Chocolate is Good for Your Health and Sexuality

W

ho would have thought that one of our favourite guilty pleasures would be proven to be beneficial to your health and lifestyle? Well, you’re probably wondering what that it is and surprise surprise, it’s chocolate. We all grew up hearing that chocolate would make us fat and destroy our teeth, and while these are possible side effects, scientists have found that the high concentration of cocoa can be very efficient in preventing and treating many known health issues. A chocolate’s quality is determined by the properties of the cocoa seeds it is made of, especially the amount of flavonoids, which are also found in wine, green tea, and bilberries. Milk chocolate has less flavonoids than dark chocolate and white chocolate has almost none. Flavonoids such as epicatechin are usually removed from commercial cocoas (employed for producing chocolate) because they induce a bitter taste.

1

Chocolate reduces blood pressure. The flavonoids found in cocoa help in the control of the arterial tension, by increasing the amount of nitric oxide in the blood. Studies showed that dark chocolate is as effective as the antihypertensive drugs.

2 3

Dark chocolate can decrease by 50 percent the risk of a heart attack, coronary disease by 10 percent, and premature death by 8 percent.

It improves blood circulation to the brain for two to three hours after you’ve eaten chocolate. The flavonoids dilate the blood vessels in the brain, allowing a larger blood flow (implicit of oxygen). This way, the brain fights off exhaustion, insomnia and ageing, improving memory and learning.

A special cocoa that retains flavonoids, which are abundant in fresh cocoa, could help maintain the normal functioning of the brain and could be used for future therapies against cognitive decline and dementia.

4

Chocolate gets you into a good mood. Phenylethylamine, a neuronal disinhibitor released by the brain, is also found in chocolate, and induces a stage of euphoria and excitation during the sexual prelude, by turning on the brain’s pleasure nuclei. This molecule increases the feeling of excitement, giddiness and boosts the sex drive; consequently, it gives you more or less the same sensation that alcohol does, but without the secondary effects of the latter. Everyone knows the “I feel good” sensation induced by chocolate. Chocolate does not contain serotonin, the “happiness” hormone, but tryptophan, a serotonin precursor, that the brain can transform into serotonin.

High serotonin levels stimulate the release of endorphins. Actually, what the antidepressant drugs do is simply increase the brain’s serotonin levels, since low levels of serotonin induce depression.

Chocolate increases the quantity of sugar in your blood, due to the above-mentioned flavonoids. Chocolate helps the process of sugar metabolization, and dark chocolate helps reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

Chocolate fights off chronic fatigue. Eating 50 grams of chocolate (85 percent cacao) daily decreases the symptoms of this disease.

Chocolate increases “good” cholesterol and lowers the “bad” one, due to the antioxidants, similar to those found in fruits, vegetables, tea and wine.

This food can also be a remedy against coughing. A chemical from cocoa can be more efficient against coughing than many medicines are, and it doesn’t have the adverse effects that the latter have.

Improved circulation induced by flavonoids also boosts a man’s erection.

Chocolate contains iron. That’s why it is recommended for pregnant women. Chocolate is also abundant in magnesium, proven to ease pre-menstrual symptoms (PMS). The calcium in milk induces the same effect, so milk chocolate could ensure the men’s peace and relaxation in certain ‘special moments’.

11 12

Studies have shown that chocolate impedes cell deterioration and cancer.

The bitterest chemical found in chocolate, theobromine, an alkaloid similar to caffeine, was found to fight off tooth decay, being more efficient than the fluoride in strengthening the crystalline structure of teeth against erosion by acid-producing bacteria (linked to tooth decay).

Better Mus’ Come

It has been a while since we have had a local film being premiered on local soil and the anticipation was high. “Better Mus’ Come” has definitely unearthed some promising new talent in Jamaica and though the flow was a bit uneven, the audience was able to connect eventually. The choppy nature was probably due to the fact that the original movie was longer but the director did a great job in depicting the 1970’s in a garrison community in Jamaica.

3

Obama’s Wars by Bob Woodward President Obama has been caught between a rock and a hard place, ever since he was elected President of the United States of America. From an economic crisis to struggles over the war in Afghanistan and providing free health care for all American while changing the way the rest of the world sees them, this book tells it all. Excerpt: “Mr. President-elect, we need to see you for a second,” Podesta said, steering him off to a private room. When Obama returned, his demeanor was different. He was more reserved, even aggravated. The transition from campaigning to governing—with all its frustrations—was delivering another surprise. His people, the inner circle from the campaign and the brain trust of Democrats he had carefully assembled to guide his transition, were being excluded. The first customer–elect was going to have to go it alone.

Rod Stewart Fly Me To The Moon: The Great American Songbook, Vol. 5 CD

Fly Me to the Moon, Rod Stewart’s fifth collection of American pop standards, finds him singing such classics as “That Old Black Magic,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Beyond the Sea,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Moon River”, and reuniting with longtime collaborators Richard Perry and Clive Davis. Though the songs are good, the whole idea of a fifth cover version might be a little overdone for everyone by now. your style eZine
