Movers&Shakers jamaican Women who made big moves in 2010

part one

Audrey Marks The entrepreneur turned ambassador and founder of one of the Caribbean’s number one multi –transaction agencies, Paymaster, Mrs. Marks did not slow down in 2010. Over the years, she has received many accolades for her entrepreneurial endeavours, including the Ernest & Young Nominee for the Caribbean Entrepreneur of the Year 2000, Business Leader of the Year Award nominee for 2000, and Florida University, FIU Female Business Leader of the year 2003 award. Marks has always demonstrated dynamism and leadership, therefore it came as no surprise that in March, she was appointed as Jamaica’s first female ambassador to Washington. Audrey Marks has definitely been a trailblazer and we are most certain that she will work hard to successfully fulfill her duties in one of the country’s most prestigious diplomatic posts.

Yendi Phillipps The former host of local talent show Digicel Rising Star’s and holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in dance, Phillipps has been making all the right moves. From warming the hearts of many Jamaicans with her gig in South Africa as a model, to being crowned the 1st Runner Up in the Miss Universe Pageant, securing Jamaica’s highest placing in the competition, she has done it all. Of course, we couldn’t leave out her landing a spot in Toyota’s recent ad campaign for its new Camry. Just last week, she was added to Digicel Jamaica’s family as a brand ambassador. It’s obvious that this 25 year old is proving that there is no limit to what she can achieve.

Patrice Wilson-McHugh Master Mixologist and Managing Director of the Bars To Go Group of Companies, McHugh has been raising the bar higher every time. The company recently launched its first bartending and mixology scholarship valued at almost $120,000. The benefits of this award go beyond our shores, since it allows the scholarship winner and other students to work anywhere in the CARICOM region and England. Today, the Bars to Go group includes other companies such as Gourmet to Go, B2G Premium Beverage & Catering Solutions, Bars to Go Training Institute, Bars to Go Supplies and an After Party Cleaning Services company.

Choosing the right gift

C

For Your Teen this Christmas hristmas is only a few days away, and time is running out to get your teen that perfect gift. If you are having a hard time deciding on what to get, we’ve got you covered with a few suggestions that we guarantee will put some cheer in the holiday for your child.

Video Games

Video game systems are always an excellent gift for a teenager. They can be a bit expensive, but it is the season for giving so as a parent you can make an exception. Also, nothing will be more satisfying than seeing the look on your child’s face on receiving this great gift. Games can be used as a tool that bonds the family together, since it is often said that “The family that plays together stays together”. The top three systems this year are the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Nintendo Wii, and if your child already has the systems, feel free top up their game selection.

A New Cell Phone

A cell phone has become a necessity for all teens. It keeps them in touch with friends and of course makes it convenient for you to reach them. What seems to make the statement these days is the type of cell phone that your teen has, and a smartphone seem to make that statement very clear. If you think that your teen is responsible enough to manage a cell phone, then a smartphone would be ideal. The world’s leading smartphones are Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry, however Blackberries have dominated locally.

Laptop

A laptop is another expensive gift but can last your teen for years, and is a great gift if your child is in upper school and will be doing School Based Assessments (SBA) or going to college shortly. Not only will it aid with school work, but it can also keep them entertained. It is a gift well worth the cause.

MP3 Player

MP3 Players have revolutionized the way everyone listens to music. If your child doesn’t have one already, this would be a good choice, especially since the prices for MP3 Players have fallen consistently over the years. When looking for an MP3 player, the main thing to look for is the memory that is available on the device. The more memory it has, the more songs your teen will be able to add to it. Chances are your teen will be demanding a specific type of player like an iPod, but I’m sure they might still be grateful for something less expensive.

Digital Camera

In light of the fact that almost all teens are on some kind of social networking site, they always want to show off the outfit that they wore to the last party and who they caught up with. Therefore, it has become almost mandatory for them to have a digital camera. Kodak and Sony usually have great digital cameras at fairly inexpensive prices.

These are simply gift ideas and are very flexible. However, throughout the season it is important that your teen understands the meaning of the season and help to spread the love, joy and warmth.
