Newsletter

Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor It’s hard to believe it, but the festive season is upon us once again. I’m sure the years go by quicker and quicker. It was great to see so many greyhounds and their humans at the winter fayre this year, and really great live music too. I left the whippets at home, and thoroughly enjoyed getting my greyhound fix! As always over Christmas, please be very wary of what your greyhounds might eat steal, or grab from under the tree. Most of us know how toxic chocolate can be, but please also remember raisins, grapes, currants and sultanas can also be too. So think about Christmas cake, mince pies and Christmas pudding, and be extra vigilant. If you suspect your dog has eaten ANYTHING with them in, please phone your vet straight away for advice. Other items to be aware of: macadamia nuts, roquefort and other blue cheese, alcohol, cooked bones, as well as the allium family - onions, garlic, leeks, shallots and chives. - so please also be cautious with sage and onion stuffing. I don’t want to sound all “doom and gloom” but with my two dogs being such scavengers, and would be counter thieves, we really do have to be careful in our house. Especially with Christmas goodies around. Also worth noting is that lots shops sell doggie treats for Christmas, many of these may contain rawhide chews, apparently choking on rawhide poses a bigger risk to dogs than many other things they might eat. So please check what is in any treats you may be given for them. Other than that, I wish you and your hounds a very Merry Christmas, and look forward to keeping everyone updated about the fabulous Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders in 2019.

Co-ordinator’s bit Well it’s that time of year again, how quickly it comes round. Can I on behalf of all the Staff and volunteers, wish you and your hounds a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2019. 2018 has been a very busy one for us all. Our funds are low at present due to the enormous veterinary costs from track injuries which we have funded. In view of the necessity to increase our fund raising capacity we have appointed a Voluntary Fund Raising Coordinator. Antonia Broadbent has spent almost every weekend taking our stall to various events to raise awareness of greyhounds as pets and raising money for us this summer. She would be delighted to hear of any fundraising ideas you might have or better still could organise for us. Please leave your ideas at the kennels and we will respond to them. Some simple ways you can help are always featured in the newsletter. Personal or corporate sponsorship of a kennel, sign up for a monthly donation however small (Help Hetty scheme),or at no cost to you sign up for Easy Fundraising and use every time you shop on line. So far this scheme has earned us nearly £500. We are in the process of booking events to attend for next year. Is there a fete, dog show, carnival etc. near you? Would they let us attend with the stall? Let us know the details and we will try to come along. Dates for next year will not be published until the next newsletter in order to give the most up to date information. Many of you will have missed seeing Molly at the kennels on most days of the week. She has reduced her hours to just 3 days per week and Wallis will now work full time. Many of you will now have met Michael and we welcome him to the Team, he will work holiday and sickness cover. I’m sure everyone will fully support Wallis as she settles into her new role. Have fun over the festive season, keep the chocolate, mince pies and Christmas pudding out of the reach of your hounds nobody wants a Christmas trip to the vets!

Corinne Can we send your newsletter by email? Each time the newsletter is published we post around 600 copies out. As you can imagine this means our postage charges are very high. We have a growing number of people who opt to receive the newsletter by email, and remove themselves from the postage list. If you would like to do this, please email our editor michele_storer@hotmail.com and include your name and address to be removed from the list. Please note we will only use your contact information to email you the newsletter each quarter, we will not pass it on to anyone else.

Hetty’s Helpers, Sponsors, Fundraisers Hello from me just before Christmas. I am getting so excited to see what Santa has brought me this year. He knows I have been a very good girl (mostly) this year. In fact just recently that grumpy old David actually told me that I was a very good girl, had exceeded myself and done just what he wanted. How about that!! A little girl called Sophia came to the kennels and she was very frightened of dogs because of something that happened at another kennels. So David introduced me to her and I turned on my charm, I am very good at that, and within a short time Sophia was walking with me around the car park, see pictures. We had a lovely time and eventually I persuaded her to walk Millie who is waiting for a home and Sophia really fell for Millie and hopefully after another few meetings Millie will be Sophia’s best friend. So I hope Santa was watching me as I love the chicken fillets I asked him for. Hetty and Sophia

Millie and Sophia

I wish all my helpers, and there are lots of you, a very Happy Christmas and I thank you for helping us care for our greyhounds and for enabling people like Sophia to understand how gentle, kind and friendly we all are. Just to catch up, easyfundraising has so far raised over £430 which is brilliant considering it is costing you and us nothing at all. Please continue to go through them when ordering online. We have a few more kennel sponsors this year and many people have renewed and continued to sponsor. This would make an ideal Christmas present for anyone at only £50 for a whole year. Also our standing orders donations have risen so all is good. Phew, I hope you will all be as good as me, I will now have to have a lie down probably until Santa comes, Oh yes I will! See you soon

Henry Makes Friends This is me Henry (formerly Hooch) making friends with friends of my adopters. Since coming to my new home I have delighted everyone (well almost everyone). New Dad gets mad when I do things like eat a whole packet of butter. It went down solid and came back about an hour later in liquid form. I told them butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth! Mum and Dad weren’t thrilled either when I took a saucepan down from the Aga and ate their chilli con carne and wooden spoon. I had heard that Dad makes lovely Victoria sponges. I had picked up that people call them belly busters as they are so delicious so I thought I needed to quality test one when Dad put it on a cooling rack. He had put it away in the utility room to cool but as I was so sure he would like me to sample it I worked out how to undo the door and thought I would treat myself to the lot. On another occasion I heard Dad was going to make small cakes for a fundraiser. I felt it was my duty to test these too. Instead of giving 40 cakes Dad was only able to give 25. I also enjoy bags of raw carrots (so I can see in the dark) and garlic (to keep those pesky witches at bay). I went lame after chasing squirrels in the garden so Mum and Dad had to take me to the vets. They make a fuss of me there and give me treats. They treated my poorly leg and discovered I also had a corn so one of the lady vets (who has experience of greyhounds) cut it out. I cried but she said I was a brave boy. When I was first adopted Mum thought I looked like “Sir Henry Hawkins QC”. Now they know me better I have been called Hooligan Henry. I love being adopted. Henry.

Spotted Spotted in the seafront gardens at Felixstowe, by Sarah Harvey

These fabulous “Spotted” photos are from Dr Rayna Denison who took them whilst she was doing a research trip to Japan. The first (the lady) is a gallery pic, from a deco artist called Lcart. The second (the one marked SAGAN) cake from a cafe on the Philosopher’s walk in Kyoto, near the temple of the silver pavilion, and the third (the painted one looking left) was an enma (sp?) wish-making plaque from a shrine in Nara. Long Stay Residents

TAGGY

ROCKY

Tall, dark and handsome, Taggy is very loyal and affectionate to those he knows, he enjoys a peaceful walk in the countryside and walks well on the lead too. Taggy recently celebrated his fifth birthday, he has a happy, playful character and really loves a game of ball. Now ready to experience home comforts for the first time, Taggy can’t wait to relax in a quiet home, he’ll be a great pet given some socialising with smaller dogs.

Rocky is a very handsome boy, he has an unusual dark brindle coat and sweet floppy ears. Rocky can be shy with new people and in busy situations, he will appreciate plenty of time, patience and gentle TLC to adjust to life as a family pet. Quiet and good on the lead, Rocky would love to find a calm and peaceful home in the countryside where he can become settled and relaxed.

Facts about Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders 1. It costs an average £4,500 per month to 3. We find homes for an average of 100 run our kennels at Hainford, this includes greyhounds per year. Blickling Walk, November 18th

As you can see, lots of hounds and their humans enjoyed a walk around Blickling Lake. No one was in a hurry as there was blue sky & the sun shining. What more could you ask for!

Arty Settles In

Just over two weeks ago we adopted Arty, and we are soo glad that we did! - The only teething troubles were an upset stomach for two days (to be expected) - but now - wow! He plays a ‘howling game’ when we’re on walks (thinks he’s a wolf lol) - has mastered the stairs in our home & (lol) takes himself to the spare bedroom when he’s had enough of our TV etc (another bed)! Speaking of beds’ - he has his own sheepskin blanky - however - when we go to bed, he takes EVERY cushion off the sofas’ and makes his own ‘Sultan Bed’ (I swear he’s Moroccan lol) so in the morning there is an ‘Arty Boudoiur’ going on. We’ve discovered, he loves popcorn - movie nights he’s on my lap stealing mine! All in all he’s settled in brilliantly & I know it’s only been a short space of time - but we could not be without him now. Thank you for the gift of Arty - he is treasured. Sarah & Ray
