Newsletter

Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor Hi everyone, welcome to the Spring Newsletter. Hoping you all had a peaceful and healthy Christmas time - doesn’t that feel a lifetime ago already? Here’s hoping Spring has truly Sprung, without any wintery bursts to catch us off guard. I know Jack and Bella have already been grazing on fresh grass and their favourite “sticky weed” they do enjoy a buffet along their walks! We’ve even braved one or two trips out without their coats on. Hopefully this is all leading to a much needed warm summer, so we can all get back to doing the things we enjoy, without as many restrictions as the past two years. We keep our fingers firmly crossed for that. Has anyone applied for the new Animal Health Certificate yet, which replaced the old Pet Passports for travel into Europe with your hound? We had passports a few years ago, when we took them with us to France for our holidays, via the Eurotunnel. I’d imagine the new certificate is very similar, in that it will pay to get quotes from different vets before “buying”. If anyone has travelled with their pet recently, perhaps you could let us all know how it went, especially now restrictions are lifting again after the Omicron clamp down. Perhaps more of us will be getting ready with our holiday plans. Where have you been that’s very dog friendly, or that’s definitely not welcoming to our 4 legged friends.

Co-ordinator’s bit I’m writing this with the sun shining in through the window, the dogs, as usual are in competition to find the sunniest spot. I must admit it’s wonderful to see all the Spring flowers beginning to bloom it makes you feel summer can’t be too far away. What a wet winter we’ve had. I’m sure a lot of you, like me, have got tired of ploughing through mud on their daily walks. The kennels and field have been really badly affected and we must give an extra special thanks to all our walking volunteers who’ve come regularly throughout the winter to walk the dogs. We appreciate it and I know for sure the dogs look forward to seeing you all. There is now a list of events for Homefinders elsewhere in the letter. One very important one is the Fun Dog Show on Sunday, June 5th at Trimingham Village Hall. This is the Jubilee weekend and we are organising it for our funds. We welcome any offers of help on the day, if you can’t help please come along and support us by entering your greyhound in the show. We hope to have some craft type stalls in the hall so if you know of anyone who’d like to come along please ask them to get in touch. There will also be room for several other stalls around the arena. Our next Open Day is on April 3rd and we hope to see many of you there with your greyhounds. Hopefully we have booked some fine weather! The Greyhound Show will take place on May 15th a little earlier than usual because of the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. We start our collections at the Stadium at Easter so if anyone feels they would like to come with their greyhound and collect at the turnstiles you would be made most welcome by our small band of collectors. These collections raise a very large amount of money for us and in the last 6 months of last year we raised over £4,000. We’re looking forward to welcoming lots of you on April 3rd at the Open Day. Put it in your diary 11am -2pm.

Corinne Stamp update Thank you to those of you who have collected stamps for us to sell. All have to be hand sorted and trimmed before they can be sold. Given the quantity we receive, this can be quite a big job. It really helps if you can cut them off the envelopes carefully, leaving a margin as shown in the attached picture. We appreciate your continued support. Linda Page 2

Patsy’s Page Happy New Year to everyone I hope you are all in good health and have kept well clear of that Panda thing that is going about. I am looking forward to this year……. I think. Mr Grumpy says we will be going to lots of exciting events such as Fetes, Dog Shows, Open Days and Walks. Sounds like work to me so I hope the pay is good! Talking of work I have been wearing my paws out with all the clerical work I have to do. I have managed to reach one goal in that we now have 166 supporters for easyfundraising and recently we were paid £208.10 good eh! If you are not a supporter and you shop online please register now it is easy and free. Amazon Smile is a similar thing so if you shop there then go through Smile and support us. If you would rather donate to us by standing order, anything from £1 a month then contact me for details or get a form from the kennels. 31 people donate this way at the moment and it keeps me busy which is good or so says Mr Grumpy. I would like to increase this to 40 people if possible so do think about it please. Finally another way of helping us is to sponsor a kennel, again forms from me or the kennels. This is a good way of following the progress of my friends in the kennels and is so valuable to them. Currently we have 37 sponsors and my target is 42 which is 3 per kennel. All details are on our woofsite. Remember a company can sponsor a kennel and gain a bit of advertising or promotion as some already do. Contact me at jones432@btinternet.com Here endeth my usual requests that Mr Grumpy makes me advertise…work, work, work! I thought you might be interested to know that I have a new boyfriend, he is called Rodney and is a large, handsome, fluffy Labradoodle that I see every week at dog club. Oooh he is a bit of alright!( see the photo). Of course Mr Grumpy has to spoil it by telling me that Rodney and I are distracting each other and not doing what we are supposed to do. I like distractions!! We go to a club called Animal Magic Dog Club which is great fun, especially with Rodney, and we learn to do lots of things that make people like Mr Grumpy very happy. Just recently he was extremely happy as I managed to pass a Bronze Obedience test and I now have something called a sistificate and little badge that show how good I am. Of course Rodney passed as well, he is soooo handsome! Currently we are both practicing for our Silver badge which is going quite well although Mr Grumpy is never satisfied!! If you are thinking of taking your owner along to a dog club I can absolutely recommend it. Animal Magic Dog Club meets in a barn at Bradwell Hall Farm which is great for whizzing round (which I do often). The woofsite is www.animal-magix.co.uk. Friends of mine Olly and Tuppence have also been, it is a lot of fun and helps to keep us happy and safe.

Keep those tails wagging.

Letters to the editor Dear Michele We adopted Rowley in July 2021 who had been in foster care with the wonderful Anne. Rowley now lives with his two sisters Khloe and Livi and has settled in so well. One of his favourite things to do is zooming round the garden with khloe (Livi does not understand but likes to watch). Rowley’s latest discovery is he can nuzzle the lid of the food bin however he finds it disappointing when he is caught and when the level drops too low he can’t reach it. He is always hopeful of a trip out in the car and spends ages standing by the boot but when it’s time to go out and the boot is opened he just stands there staring. Mum and I take an end each and have to lift his 37kg body into the boot. Khloe and Rowley like to team up to steal food from the worktop. He reaches up with his huge paws and they then share the ill gotten gains from the floor. Their best finds include a whole Victoria sponge cake, two cottage pies and some cheddar cheese. It’s hard to believe that something so big can work so quietly... but we wouldn’t change him. Rowley is a giant puppy dog with a heart of gold we all love him so much. The Hardy Family

Dear Michele I just wanted to report how grateful I am to still have my big gorgeous lump of a boy with me. He became desperately unwell suddenly whilst I was away on holiday in Wales. He was completely collapsed and did not want his dinner. He wouldn’t even lift his head up for a sausage. Something was very wrong. It was over the new year bank holiday. He was rushed into Carmarthen Veterinary Hospital on a stretcher. The vet thought it might be heart failure !! He had a dangerously high temperature of 41. He was put on a drip and he stayed in the hospital over night. I got through 5 boxes of tissues whilst he was gone. They carried out lots of tests. Amazingly he made a miraculous recovery and surprised all the vets and he came home next day. The vets could not find anything wrong with him other than a tiny cut under his pad. I would like to thank Carmarthen Veterinary Hospital for looking after my boy. Sonny is approaching 12 this year. He was Mojo in the kennels. He’s still full of beans and enjoying life to the full. Christina - Sonny’s Mummy Xx.

Hi Michele I thought you might like to see Tyla keeping watch over the Christmas presents, and getting to open his own! Alison Shelton

Invincia Molly It is with a broken heart to let you know that we had to have Molly put to sleep today, she was 14 years old her back legs just wouldn’t carry her anymore. I just had felt that I had to write this. We miss her so much, the house is so quiet now without her. She has left a “Molly” shaped hole in our hearts. I have spoken to Corrine Douglas today too. We have lots of happy memories of her too. She had 9 and a half wonderful years with us. We re-homed her from you. She has gone to join our last Greyhound Sally, I imagine that they are having a wonderful time together. Goodbye dear Molly, at peace over the Rainbow Bridge. From Fiona Hawkes and my son William.

Minnie 2011 - 2022, previously Squeaky I am sorry to let you know we lost Minnie last week. We are all devastated, especially my children who loved her so much – she was more than a dog. Minnie came to us in 2013, on first meeting her she did the greyhound lean on me obviously choosing me as her new owner and us as her new family. Aged just 2 years old, she very young to be retired – she just wasn’t cut out for it, Minnie proved her real talents to us quickly. She proved herself as being the best at roaching on the sofa and gobbling snacks, she was also pretty good at stinking the house out with the notorious Greyhound gas! She loved a romp over the field only to return home and resume her position on the sofa with the children by her side, she was tolerant and loving towards them always and they showed her every day how loved she was. Minnie had a fondness for children, although she was very anxious and scared at the thought of a grown person stopping to speak to her in the street, on the school run she would happily walk along side all of the children who often would joke that she should have a saddle so they could ride her! Minnie will have a place in all of our hearts forever, rest in peace our beautiful girl. Vanessa Pazarlis

Legend (Riverside legend) What a day that was when you chose us for your staff. You had your challenges and we faced and overcame together You wouldn’t go near the car without shaking, so one day at a time and one step at a time and lots of sausages, nearer and nearer until we sat on the back seat having a sausage picnic You were scared of all dogs, getting yourself in a real state, it took a while but again sausages and reassurance until you were happy around them and even shared your treats with them. You were really scared of dogs off lead running up to you, so we walked where dogs SHOULD be on lead. After a while we became the best of friends because you felt safe with me and knew I would protect you from all the scary things in this world. So we invited Tallulah to join our family, it was never a love story you were just “There”. She was so different from you. with bags of confidence and that in turn helped you. The only demands she had was FOOD and not to take her out in the rain. Sadly we lost her in 2018 One challenge we just couldn’t handle at all HORSES they were to be avoided at all costs, because you would scream and scream panic and scream some more and terrify everyone around you In time you became the sweetest boy who spent many hours having cuddles with Michael who is disabled, you meant the world to him Our lives will never be the same without you and we will always love and miss you and Tallulah. You really were a true Legend.

Petplan & ADCH Animal Charity Awards A huge thank you to anyone who nominated us for the Animal Charity Team of the Year award. The animal charity awards are a great opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication put in by the teams and the individuals within the animal charity sector who have gone that extra mile to help rescue and rehome animals in need. We have an amazing team of volunteers, and we thank each and every one of you for being part of the team.

Hannah is a cover star! Recently Hannah Colburn had an article written about her work with Pets as Therapy in My Weekly. One of Hannah’s 4 rescue dogs, Todd came from Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders, and she made sure to mention us in her interview.
