Newsletter

Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor Hello everyone, and welcome to the Autumn Newsletter, though to be honest it’s feeling more like winter at the moment. Hopefully we will enjoy a late summer to make up for it! The volunteer team are back in full swing with events and fundraising, but they really do need some extra help - see Corinne’s piece for info, and the back page. I’m sure a lot of hounds have been enjoying UK staycations with their owners this year. We took the terrible twosome to Goathland just outside of Whitby, then up to Newcastle, and eventually Northumberland where I’m from. It was during the one week of heatwave in July, and we learned a lesson in choosing hotels... The first hotel was really fab, (The Inn on the Moor in Goathland), really dog friendly, with their own blankets and welcome pack. The 2nd hotel, the Travelodge on Newcastle quayside was supposed to be air conditioned, but it was just blowing out already hot air, with no way to open a window to cool down. They gave us a desk fan, but with 2 whippets overheating (and 2 humans taking cold showers at 3 am) we had to leave a day early. We even had to soak the towels in cold water Bella enjoying watching to try and cool Jack and Bella down in the night. That heat seems the free range sheep in Goathland! like a distant memory now though! We have our next break planned with the dogs to the Cotswolds in October, and have already checked that we will be able to open the windows this time.

Co-ordinator’s bit It was so lovely to see you all at our first Open Day and Auction. Our apologies for the car parking problems this was all due to the owner of the kennels not allowing us to use the top field anymore. Our only option was to comply or cancel, this was not an option as we knew how disappointed everyone would have been after months of lockdown. We have also needed to change our next Open Day to September 26th as it is doubtful whether we have access to the barn for refreshments after September. It has been good to get out with the stall promoting greyhounds as pets again. On Bank Holiday weekend we had a very successful stall at All About Dogs with lots of interest in the dogs, hopefully they will materialise into new homes. For my JJ this was his first year of coming with me to shows and collecting, I must admit I was very anxious how he would cope as he is quite nervous of unknown dogs, really don’t know why I worried he was a star and didn’t put a foot wrong but very tired the next day! In August we said goodbye to Paige and welcomed Jade Curtis. She will have been working in the kennels for a month by the time you receive the Newsletter and many of you will already have met her. Calling all the greyhound owners in the Yarmouth/Caister/Hemsby area we need owners and their greyhounds to collect at the track on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturdays. We collect at 5.45pm on weekdays and 6pm on Saturday. You can spend an hour or so collecting and, if you wish, spend the rest of the evening at the track. Our Christmas Fayre will be held at Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane on Saturday November 20th this year so we will be looking for tombola prizes and bottles for the Bottle Tombola any donations can be left at the kennels.

Patsy’s Page Hello everybody, I hope you have had a good summer at home or wherever you have been to. I have mostly been at home because, as you can see from the photo I have been very busy. More kennel sponsors, standing pawders, sorry I mean orders, donations and lots of other things. All I get is a couple of small treats so I am thinking of going on strike for more treats. Here are some figures I have found. All who shop online and are registered with Easyfundraising raised £70.64 during the month of July, there was one new supporter and so the current number of people who are registered (it is free remember)is 130. I would like to see more people registered so if you shop online it is very easy to register(for free). https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/yarmouthgh The same applies to Amazon Smile. If you shop with Amazon then go to Smile and enter us as your charity. Again it is all free and helps my friends a lot. I have a few new friends in the kennels and there are some more to come so it would be nice if there were enough kennel sponsors to cover them. Kennel sponsorship is a lovely way of making sure the dogs have all that they need to be happy in their kennel. Full details are on our woofsite or just send me an email (jones432@btinternet.com) and I will send all the information. So who will be the first to contact me? Talking about “first” I have had a lot of firsts recently. Apart from all the paperwork, Mr Grumpy has been making me do many other things. I had my first go at collecting at the stadium at which I was very good apparently. We do need more doggies to take their owners along though as the stadium collections raise a lot of money for us. I attended my first Open Day which was brilliant because whilst Mr Grumpy was busy I got to be fussed by lots of people and be looked after by someone called Paddy who was very nice to me. I went to my first big show at the Norwich Showground and looked at loads of caravans….boring! Mr Grumpy said it was good for me to be amongst lots of people and dogs . People and dogs yes but caravans…. boring! I did my first event for Homefinders at Fakenham Racecourse which meant getting up extremely early, which I am not good at so Mr Grumpy says. It was a long day but we are helping my friends in the kennels. Best of all I apparently did something right for the first time at the classes I go to. I have never seen Mr Grumpy so pleased. If only I could remember what I got right I would do it again. Well I am worn out now and will have to go back to my sofa to relax a bit which Mr Grumpy says I do far too much. Hope to see you all again soon.

Greyhounds are Infectious! Apologies for that alarming headline at this present time! Walking through Fakenham Town Centre with a friend, through the ‘Greynoculars’ we suddenly spotted two black beauties waiting patiently with their human. “Can we say hello?” we asked. Within seconds we had one hound each leaning on us (so much for social distancing!). “I think that’s a Yes!” came the reply. We had already spotted a car in the car park with two huge stickers on each front door, reading, “Adopt a Greyhound” (Excellent advice!) and Yes! it was their car on holiday from Kent. While enthusing over the endless merits of greyhounds (as we enthusiasts do!), we were joined by a local couple who, over the years, have had four retired greyhounds. Jet and Skittles were in their element, four new human leaning posts to fuss them and rave over their species. Another man walked past and within minutes was showing all of us photos on his phone of his two current hounds in familiar pose, upside down on the sofa, plus pictures of two more happy hounds sadly passed over the Rainbow Bridge. “Wouldn’t have anything else,” he beamed. “Why have one when you can have two, four or more!” So you see, in the best possible way, greyhounds get under your skin and stay there! What better loyal friends and companions could we mere humans ask for? This happened shortly after the heart-breaking loss of our lovely Lad, who passed over the Rainbow Bridge on 29 June 2021 aged 12 years 10 months and 20 days. So gentle and friendly, famous in the neighbourhood for helping himself to treats and teaching Mabel the best places to stop for food and a fuss! Much loved and missed and never forgotten.

Best wishes to everyone from Jane Bramham-Jones and Mabel

Letters to the editor Dear Michele

We are so pleased that Delboy won the “Gentle dog” and “Best in show” categories as the dog show recently. We’ve always thought he was our winner. Here he is trying not to let it all go to his head! Edward Vernon Hi Michele My ‘baby boys’ Asher and Gad, turned 10 this August. Litter brothers who have never been apart, they niggle and snap at each other occasionally like all siblings but most of the time they get along wonderfully- curling up together to snooze and relaxing in the garden in the sunshine. Older and greyer but as snuggly and scatty as ever, they bring joy to my life everyday Sarah

Hello Michele We have been away in our caravan with our slaves Nigel and Sarah, staying in Sherwood Forest. We had a lovely walk round Vicars Water and a huge sausage roll from the cafe. We were really tired, but while Danny slept in the caravan I wanted to keep an eye the BBQ, so I was on guard. But the sun was out, I was tired and full up and I fell asleep. It must have got a bit cold so Mum covered me up, which made people smile as they walked past. But I was lovely and warm and was last back inside the awning. We had a lovely day. Love from Alice xx

In Memorium Tullowmac Blaze 01.06.08 - 19.08-21 I am writing to tell you all some very sad news I’ve lost my little fury baby greyhound Blaze (Tullowmac Blaze). Blaze changed my life around I was so scared of dogs and it was when David was in Sheringham me and my grandad got speaking with David and from that day on we visited the kennels at Hainford and David chose the right greyhound for us to reserve to take home and that was Blaze Blaze was a little naughty when we got him home as we had to dog train him as obviously he was only ever used to being in kennels and racing but after a few weeks and month I’d say he nailed it on the head perfectly. He didn’t like staying in on his own but he nailed that on the head too. He had his very on sofa chair and he used to love getting the attention and giving everyone his paw, he especially loved the fuss and attention from our next door neighbour Kay. As soon as she came in his tail would wag and he’d jump up to go for a walk down Aylestone meadows with her Blaze also loved our close friend Jan, who has greyhounds Buzz and Badger who were his best pals. Jan looked after blaze in his last years of his life and I couldn’t honestly thank her enough for the best final years of his life. He was spoilt rotten in a good way. We’re all going to miss him very much and now it’s time to go to doggy heaven, over the rainbow bridge. Until we meet again Blazey Boy, sleep tight god bless Chelsea & John

DASH – Sep ‘17

FLASH – Aug ‘16

A handsome youngster, Dash lives up to his name and is quite the energetic pup, not your average hound! He’s a really fun character and a favourite with many of the volunteers.

A handsome, friendly and affectionate boy, Flash is a nice size for a male and is mostly good on the lead.

Although he can be strong on the lead, Dash has been really good with the other hounds and all breeds of dogs he has met so far. He could live with teenagers but not young children as he can get over-excited when playing and forgets his size!

He is good around larger breeds but does need further socialising with smaller breeds. Flash is not cat friendly. Flash could live with older children and possibly a female hound depending on introductions. He loves going for walks but equally appreciates his comforts. A lovely lad ready to find his forever home.

If you’re looking for a happy friend to make you smile every day with his antics and funny sleeping positions, come and meet Dash.

Death of a companion Some of you will have experienced how sad and lost a dog can be when it loses a companion, especially if they have been together a long time. If they disappear one day and don’t come home this can be very troubling for the remaining dog. It has been said they can worry they will be sent away too. But dogs understand death and if they can be with the companion at the time, or immediately after, they have died or been put to sleep they accept it more readily. Most vets will allow this. In fact, the vet nurse who helped with my last dog to be put to sleep said she does it with her pets. They will still miss them but will know they are dead and have not just disappeared.

Dogs homed since last newsletter George (Scala Fort), Pixie (Fernisky Pixie), Kerry (Yukan Bridge), Rosie ( Jura Gogo), Paddy (Well Pad Bam Bam), Cora (Harwell Corna), Rowan (Your Wan), Risky (Jura Risky), Mona (Mona Mark Two), Warren (Sky Walker Mod), Ralf (Swift Radium), Tank (Storm Gangster), Izzy (Novel Idea), Olly (Swift Onyx), Homer (Glenske Homer), Jess (Popular Jessie), Marco (Collswood Hawk), Joe (Loddon Style), Luke (Barrack Brave), Frank (Ryves Spencer).

In Memorium Just to say that today we had to say goodbye to our beloved greyhound Henry (formerly Crellin Hooch). He was naughty, noisy, and loving. How much we shall miss him. The vets knew him well as he was always getting into scrapes but today Jayne said that this was not the Henry she knew anymore. Our vets as usual were knowledgeable and sympathetic right to the end. We used to go for walkies every Saturday and Sunday with our friend Graham and his lovely Labrador called Oscar. Both dogs sniffed together and did all their ablutions together. Oscar died two weeks ago. We have to hope they have found each other. This great sadness is the price we pay for loving them so much. Sally and Harry Hawkins

Ace’s hydrotherapy It’s been an interesting year so far and my account of Ace’s progress has been one of the highlights. I adopted him in October 2016 after losing Mally, my previous grey, in tragic circumstances. Ace was also a race dog and was retired through injury, so I knew there could be problems down the line as he aged and during the cold winter months. He’s now 9 yrs old and time has caught up with him, although the X rays showed no other joint problems had developed. Even so, he needs his anti-inflammatory drugs and I also give him glucosamine. It was a remark about hydrotherapy made by the vet that kickstarted Ace’s next treatment. A few phone calls later and he was booked in for his first session at Ruffs, run by Kim in Great Yarmouth. Ace is quite a wuss in many ways and his first session was traumatic for him, I think. Being manipulated by a masked woman to check his muscle and joint condition was only the beginning. Then there was the treadmill, filled with water! As if that wasn’t enough, the next session involved swimming as well. Bless him, he worked so hard, he couldn’t stand for a few minutes afterwards

Over time, of course, Ace’s fitness and strength have improved so Kim can now target specific muscle groups and joints without him ending up as a quivering wreck;-). The aim is to get him trotting on the treadmill as he’s already working for 20 mins with some of the time spent at a fast walk where he’s really striding out.

Page 14

What has impressed me so much is the difference this has made to his overall demeanor.Yes, he now looks as well-defined and muscly as an active race dog but it’s how happy he looks as well. Chris Roberts

Fundraising Update It has been a busy few months now we can attend the events on top of the car boots!!! The loyal and dedicated team Kiki, Dexter, Summer and JJ have enjoyed having extra support from Patsy, Tuppence, Rain and Blue, of course the humans have helped a little too, special thanks to everyone who has donated items for the car boots and those who have helped me, Chris, Sandra, John, Corrine, David, Jo, Matthew, Bill and Maureen. Thanks, Debbie

5 WAYS YOU CAN HELP US 1 2 3

By collecting at the stadium, in Yarmouth on Race Nights. Currently Monday, Wed and Saturday. You would need to be there by 5.45 on Monday and Wednesday and 6pm on Saturday. You only have to stay an hour or two. We get lots of money this way but only if we have people to collect, you don’t have to commit to every week and your greyhound is welcome too. Please call Corinne on 0845 4583797. By helping set up and take down at Open Days. The day before an Open Day we set up the stalls and get everything ready and at the end of the day itself we have to take everything down and put it away. Currently about 4 people do this every time – please could you lend a hand? If you can please call Corinne on 0845 4583797. y attending outside events which we aim to do every weekend in the B summer – manning the stall and educating people about these wonderful hounds as well as selling merchandise and selling tombola tickets. We have a dedicated team of 3 at the moment but really need more people who are willing to help. Please call Debbie on 07786 247403.
