Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor Hello everyone, and welcome to the summer issue of the newsletter. Finally we seem to be moving away from the terrible “spring” weather, with enough rain and hailstones to last a lifetime! At the time of writing we have been having a fantastic hot spell, so do please remember take special note of conditions for your dogs. They may love to spread out and bake in full sun, but dogs can easily suffer from heat stroke and sunburn especially on the nose, ears and tummy. A good test before taking your dog out for a walk is to use the 7 second method hold your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds - if you can’t hold it there for the full 7 seconds, then it’s too hot for a dog. Apparently a dogs’ main sweat glands are located on their paw pads, which is one of the reasons why walking on hot pavement is unpleasant for dogs. Their paws can also be badly burned as the pavement will be much, much hotter than the air temperature. Why not take on the challenge set by Nev Draper and Bonnie, to see which dog can demolish an ice cream the quickest? Bonnie’s photo is in the summer montage inside. Please do ensure you use dog friendly ice cream if they aren’t great with dairy. I reckon Bella whippet might be good at this, one of her many nicknames is “landshark” as she’s like a great white when grabbing treats! Molly has asked me to mention that rehoming is still available at the moment, but by appointment only, so please call ahead to book a time. Also, please do phone the kennels before bringing any donations, to check what is needed at the moment. For now they have enough bedding and food, and no more room to store more.

All this talk of hot weather is bound to mean that as soon as you receive the newsletter it will start raining again! Let’s hope not.

Co-ordinator’s bit What a change in the weather! Having suffered rain, gales and constant grey skies in May we have been treated to a wonderful warm Bank Holiday weekend. Let it be an omen for the rest of summer. It has been good to be able to welcome all the volunteer walkers back and now to allow a very sociable coffee afterwards. Most of you will not imagine how dedicated the walkers have been paddling through ankle deep mud to walk the dogs for most of April and May. An extra special thanks you to you all. We are optimistically continuing to organise a bumper Open Day on June 27th. We are holding the Auction of Greyhound Memorabilia that was cancelled last October and will have the usual stalls, BBQ and refreshments. We hope as many as possible of you will come as it will be good to meet up again with all your lovely hounds. Covid restrictions hopefully being relaxed a bit by then. July 25th we are hoping to hold our Greyhound Show. Start getting your boy or girl ready to look their best, not that they ever look anything less than beautiful! The track at Caister has now reopened to the public all be it with a limited number of visitors allowed. We have begun to collect at the gates and restaurant door on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays and folk have been very generous in filling our collection pots. If you would like to join our small band of collectors, you would be made very welcome just contact me and I will arrange for one of the regulars to show you the ropes. We are not yet able to collect at Taverham Garden Centre or Jolley’s, but we will also need collectors for them soon. Many of the shows we attend with our stall promoting greyhounds as pets are beginning to organise dates to restart and we have managed to book most weekends out in August. Elsewhere in the Newsletter you will find a list of events we hope to attend, we always love to have you visit our stall with your greyhounds.

Patsy’s Page (was Hetty’s Helpers) It is time to say a big THANK YOU to all who I mentioned in the last newsletter and have continued to support Homefinders during these difficult times. I have been hard at work as ever, looking out for the postman who brings the donations for my friends at the kennels. So thank you to the 30 people who donate by standing order each month, to the 128 people who raise funds online through easyfundraising, to the 41 people who sponsor a kennel and also the many people who make one off donations, you are all doing a super job. My greyhound friends are very grateful. If any of you out there wish to add to these numbers please let me know and I will send you some details. My email is jones432@btinternet.com I am looking forward to meeting everyone at our Open Day on 27th June (fingers and claws crossed). Talking of the Open Day we will be holding an Auction of greyhound paraphernalia (that’s a long word for me) including some signed David French pictures (only a few left now), some lovely statuettes and many other things. There is something for all those of you who love greyhounds. I have been going to the Animal Magic Dog Club with my friend Tuppence and we have had a great time trying to do all the things we are told. Things like sit, stay, come here, look at me (which Tuppence is very good at) and many others. We Orca,Whisper, Fred, Ruby,Tuppence and me at the dog club get lots of treats and have made lots of other friends. Apparently Mr Grumpy gets frustrated, whatever that means, when I get distracted and find things to sniff. He says I must be deaf but I am certainly not. I was very good at the last session, I was fastest at recall for example which means Mr Grumpy calls me and holds up a sausage and I dash over to him as fast as I can so no one else gets the sausage!, Then they put out tunnels, jumps, planks etc. which I could not see any point to so I decided not to bother. Mr Grumpy lived up to his name then and said I was very lucky to even get the tiny bit of sausage he gave me after that. Still we got a certificate which should be mine really as Mr Grumpy didn’t do anything. See you all soon

Dear Michele Rio is settling well. We adopted her 2 weeks ago on Thursday 13th May. She’s the sweetest girl and has definitely made herself at home. If you have any questions please feel free to ask and I’ve added a photo of her with her favourite ducky. Kind regards Maria

In Memorium I would like to say a big thank you to Homefinders for their kindness in taking Fifi in when her master(my uncle) passed away with Covid last year and to the lovely family that adopted her. Sadly on May 19th Fifi quietly passed away she was 11 years old so had done remarkably well and had a lovely year with her toy boy Glenn. I will be having a coffee morning when it is safe to do so in Mundesley to swell the funds for Homefinders so hope to see some of you then. Sue and family.

In Memorium In Memory of Smokey (Modleys Avenue) May 2013 to 18th March 2021. Smokey came into my life on 15th. March 2019. I was asked if I could foster him as he had Stage 4 Kidney Disease. After meeting him with Grace, my other Greyhound, I agreed and he came home with me. I had previous experience of Kidney disease as my previous greyhound Milly developed it in her later life. On 26th July 2019 I decided to adopt him. Smokey and Grace got on well with each other and used to chase each other around the local park. He was very lively for his condition, but later he became more tired and slept most of the time, although he knew when mealtimes were and would suddenly appear. He sometimes got a piece of chicken as a treat. He still enjoyed his walks but didn’t run around as much. Then on the week commencing Sunday 14th March 2021 he became very lethargic and off his food. I managed to get him to the vet on the 17th and they put him on fluids and kept him in to do tests. All seemed to be going well until I got a call on Thursday 18th to say he was not responding to the treatment and his bloods had got worse. They didn’t think he would recover and at 6 pm. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge whilst I was fussing him. He is sadly missed by me (Robert Morphy) & Grace.

When a dog is off its lead, the owner is the real problem. By John Cooper QC The sad demise of Freddie the seal after it was savaged by a barrister’s dog raises the thorny question of pets on leads. Owners’ control over their dogs, or lack of it, is a contentious and volatile issue, played out daily on footpaths, fields and parks up and down the country, and can range from mutual exchanges of suburban frowning to the trading of blows in cornfields. At its heart is the “My Dog is Friendly” syndrome, which manifests itself like this:” My dog is bouncy and friendly, well-mannered and an utter delight, so I do not see the need to put him/her on a lead. You dog is the problem because it is on a lead. Unfortunately, the dog on the lead sees it rather differently: “I am restrained and cannot properly defend myself from this dog running towards me and threatening me so I will have to respond defensively”. Result unpleasant scenes between your dog and “My Dog is Friendly” or a dog killing or injuring wildlife. Dogs off the lead are by definition uncontrolled especially if their ability to respond to command is overwhelmed by the chase instinct. Dog owners amongst us have learnt this the hard way. I wonder if the famous Fenton ever heard his owner shouting at him all those years ago as he blissfully chased a herd of deer? It’s against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control if it injures someone or makes someone worried that it might injure them. A court might consider a dog is dangerously out of control if it attacks another animal. It’s also an offence if someone is injured trying to separate two fighting animals. Furthermore, it’s a criminal matter if your dog injures livestock. So, it can hardly be said that the law does not offer a reasonable toolbox for any community police officer to use if they come upon a “My Dog is Friendly” incident. Sadly, few of them seem willing to use the law and regard such clashes as a mere spat between dog owners. The death of Freddie might make them think again. But let’s be clear this has nothing to do with dangerous dogs -it’s dangerous owners who are the problem. Dogs are dogs and do what dogs do. It is up to the owners to understand not only their pets but the world in which they allow them liberty. John Cooper QC is the owner of Lawrence a rescue lurcher.

Harry

Rowan

This handsome boy is Harry, he has just turned 7 and sadly after 3 years in a loving home, due to a change in circumstances, Harry is looking for a new home.

This stunning boy is Rowan who is currently in foster care.

Harry is house trained, can do stairs and is happy to be left for a few hours at a time. He could live with sensible children. Harry is good on the lead and is good around larger dogs. He isn’t cat friendly. Harry will stay in his current home until a new family can be found. He is a very friendly and affectionate boy who will be quick to settle to a new home.

Rowan is a big lad with a big heart, he has a very loving and affectionate nature and loves lots of fuss. Rowan walks well on the lead and is now getting used to meeting other dog breeds. A playful character, Rowan can get quite bouncy when excited so best suited to a home without very young children or small dogs. He is currently being fostered with 2 other greyhounds with no issues. He isn’t cat friendly. Rowan is house trained and settled indoors, happy to be left for up to 2 hours currently. At only 4 years young, Rowan will make a really lovely family pet for many years to come.

Rapeseed Warning It’s that time of year again where farmers fields have blossomed into pretty yellow flowers, these plants are called rapeseed. Although it may be tempting to place your dog in the mist to take a scenic photo, please avoid this at all costs! Rapeseed is extremely poisonous for dogs, especially in highly sensitive canines. Rapeseed is listed by Dogs Trust as toxic to our dogs if ingested and can cause symptoms such as: • Haemolytic Anaemia • Blindness • Damaged Nervous System • Digestive Disorders • Breathing Problems Even walking through these fields should be avoided! Dogs have been reported to suffer from severe open wounds after running through a crop of rapeseed. Please seek immediate vet attention if your dog shows any signs of rapeseed poisoning.

For The Love Of Jonjo Jonjo, racing name Black Falcon, had happily lived with Peter and Polly, since they’d purchased him from Eire over three years back, as a four month old pup. He regularly raced at Yarmouth Race track. One race night Jonjo fell, crossing the whole field, they all recovered quickly and ran on, except Jonjo. He was carried off straight to the Vets room where the duty Veterinary Surgeon diagnosed a fracture in his off fore. Strapped up and made comfortable, Jonjo was transported to the 24 hour care unit at CVS in Gorleston, to await a scan and full diagnosis the next day. Joint owner Polly travelling in the back of the van beside Jonjo, just in case! Peter and Polly moved their racing greyhounds to Yarmouth after Mildenhall ceased racing. Still fairly new to the area, they didn’t fully understand Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders Veterinary Assistance Scheme, inaugurated by the group in 2000. Wanting to do the best for Jonjo, Peter and Polly were concerned as to how they could fund his care. They phoned Homefinding Co-Ordinator Corinne next morning, to say they could raise £1000 to support Jonjo’s treatment, £2000 at a push. Corinne immediately jumped in stating Jonjo was now under Homefinders’ wing and working with Peter and Polly, the charity would fund the veterinary costs, prior to homing him as a pet once fully recovered. Unable to supply the op Jonjo needed, Gorleston CVS emailed the images to their Fakenham specialists. He was transferred across, and assessed ready for surgery. To everyones surprise after arriving the Vet announced, “Jonjo can stand” and that he was fine for the op tomorrow. Whilst appreciating the high level of veterinary expertise at The Grove, it still came as a bit of a shock to sign a form on behalf of Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders covering costs of £5000 (plus or minus 10%). Next morning, it was good news from the operating Vet, all had gone well. Over the weekend Jonjo would be receiving specialist care and physio-therapy to ensure he used the leg. Peter and Polly could take him home on Tuesday morning. Thrilled, they stopped on the way home to buy extra meat, chicken, and fish to feed him up. One Week Later Jonjo wasn’t in the least fazed to be back to have his stitches out, the nurse did remark ‘there were a lot’! He is due to return in eight weeks, to have a final x-ray and check, prior to being signed off. Even now his scar is remarkably fine, once the fur grows back, I doubt it’ll be visible. The prognosis is that when the bones all healed, he’ll be able to use the leg as if nothing had happened. It’s being left to Peter and Polly to tell Jonjo he won’t be returning to racing though!
