Note from the Editor

How has that happened? Who stole 2017?? It’s gone by so quickly. Here we are in the festive season again already! I’d imagine lots of your greyhounds have entered into the winter with extra coats, blankets and snoozes. In fact I often think they would love to hibernate given the chance. We’ve already had a few walks where we got drenched to the bone, then hailed on. My two turned round and dragged me home! Our whippet Bella continues to get better to be left at home, in fact this year we have managed to go out for the evening on several occasions with no howling. Something which seemed so far away this time last year. I listened in on them last week for the first time in a while, and I was so pleased that I didn’t hear a single sound over the 45 minutes I was at the shops. It’s such a relief, as we’ve just had new neighbours move in, and didn’t want them to need to complain about the noise. Anyone who is struggling with separation anxiety, it can be worked through. Time and a lot of patience, along with excellent advice and support from Kathy Berner really helped us get through it. Now that Bella is over 2 she seems to have calmed down a lot, and really does like to curl up and sleep more and more.

Christmas day at Holkham beach last year

Jack and Bella will be enjoying Christmas with us in my home town up in Northumberland, so will have lots of long walks on the beach. I hope all your hounds have a fabulous Christmas, but please remember all the danger foods which could be around at this time. Anything with grapes (Christmas cake, mince pies etc), nuts, chocolate and turkey bones should be kept well away from dogs. Please seek vets advice immediately if they eat something they shouldn’t.

Co-ordinator’s bit As 2017 draws to a close I can’t help but to reflect on the year. So many changes and such wonderful support from all our volunteers. March saw the first of our Open days which as usual was well supported in spite of the cold weather. Three other Open Days took place in May, July and October. The Dog Show in May had its usual display of fantastic looking greyhounds, every “slave” should give themselves a pat on the back. One of our trainers from the Stadium was the Judge and was extremely impressed with all of the hounds. October saw the Auction and with some excellent greyhound memorabilia and some very generous bids we raised several hundreds of pounds. Elsewhere in the Newsletter you will find the dates of the Open Days in 2018 put them on your calendar now. Not bought yours yet? Homefinders Calendars are available at the kennels or by post for £4.99p. Greyhound walks continue with several owners volunteering to lead walks in their area. This is a great help to me as I am finding it more difficult to lead walks with an ageing greyhound. He is now 12 and now only needs short walks and sometimes none at all! I hope we will have some more volunteers next year in a larger selection of areas. If you have a favourite walk why not share it with us all by leading a walk, doesn’t need to be too long about 45 minutes to an hour. The next Newsletter will have details of some walks arranged for next year. Much work has gone on behind the scenes this year to enable us to leave the Greyhound Trust and become our own charity. On May 1st we became independent using our new Registered Charity Number 1172132. This was an enormous step for us to take and thanks to all our fund raising volunteers and Yarmouth Stadium we continue to be very successful. We must heartily thank all those volunteers who collect, rain or shine, at the Stadium gates on race nights and the Staff at the Stadium who run raffles for us each evening. To the band of volunteers who go out with their hounds to fetes and shows every weekend to promote our work, thank you for giving up your weekends. If you would like to help us raise money for our retired greyhounds just leave a message at the kennels or phone me 08454583797 more ideas are always welcome too. Our final event of the year will be our Christmas Fayre on Saturday 9th December at Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane, Taverham NR8 6JR from 1-3.30pm. Greyhounds welcome with well-behaved slaves! Please support us, it’s always a fun event before Christmas with excellent refreshments provided, as usual, by Cheryl and her team.

Dear Michele, I thought you might like an update about Todd’s visits to the Parkside School in Norwich.

Parkside is a school for children with complex needs aged 7-17 and Todd and I have been visiting children from the Willow Class since May. Please find attached some photos from when we went on a walk together and also below a quote from the class teacher. ‘Willow class are always happy to see Todd and Hannah when they visit every month. Some of the class were nervous about dogs but Todd is so calm and friendly the pupils became brave enough to stroke him.We have been out on a walk with Todd, helped groom him and spent time stroking him. He is now very much a part of Willow class and he is not phased if we are a bit unpredictable or noisy. We love Todd’. Mrs Bell – Class Teacher Willow Class Hannah Colbourn Dear Michele, We were all a little tearful, but so very happy when Arty went to his new home recently. He spent 20 months with us at the kennels. We were so please to see him within a few days at the winter walk, and he seems to be settling in very well. This photo was taken in the office on his last day with us. We wish him a very happy forever home. Molly

Hetty says “hello” Hetty would like to wish all her helpers, sponsors, fundraisers and friends a very, very happy Christmas. She is totally worn out with all the hard work of looking after her butler who is recuperating from a recent stay in hospital hence the shortness of this article. To say she is delighted by the donations raised this year is an understatement. If she was anything other than a greyhound she would be dancing with the delight, however she is a greyhound and has shaken a paw or two in the usual upside down position. Every kennel has a sponsor and now she is hoping that each will have two sponsors at least. So get your friends, work colleagues, loved ones and anyone else you know to think about sponsoring a kennel. Forms can be found at the kennels or contact Hetty on jones432@btinternet.com and she will send you one. Details can also be found on our website www.yarmouth-greyhound-homefinders.co.uk YOU CAN HELP US BY: 1 Join Easy Fundraising when you shop at many shops on line 2 Join Pets at Home VIP Club and ask for any donations from purchases to go to Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders (listed under Lowestoft but you can shop at any branch). 3 Sending gifts from our Amazon Wishlist. Spotted this iron greyhound outside the Wrexham museum in North Wales. It looked so impressive from afar! There was a special part of the museum showing the history of “ The Four Dogs” a well known landmark entrance to a park showing four greyhounds, this sculpture was a feature near the museum entrance, you couldn’t miss it!! Regards Coleen and Ed, and Danny (Artistic Talent)

Winter Walk - Saxlingham Nethergate A great turnout for our walk at Saxlingham, approx 35 dogs including Kennel dogs; Banjo, Mack, Dandy, April and Gale. The highlight of the day was seeing Arty happy with his new owner. After 20 months with us at Homefinders, we’re so pleased to see him finally go to his new home.

Long Stay Residents

A stunning but shy boy, Impey needs a calm and relaxed home where he can settle into home life at his own pace. Impey loves going for peaceful walks however he needs an owner who will continue his socialising with smaller animals. Impey will be a rewarding companion, he’d live as an only pet or with a familiar easy-going hound. Once confident, Impey is a cheeky and playful boy, he’s spent time in the home of a volunteer and proved to be housetrained and very well mannered, settling well with the resident greyhounds.

Page 12

Eric is a real stunner with his unique black and white markings and super shiny coat. A very success-ful racer, Eric raced an impressive 200 times, he will celebrate his 7th birthday in October so is soon hoping to enjoy his well-earned retirement in a warm and comfy home. Eric is a fit hound with an affectionate and playful nature, he will become a very loyal companion to his lucky new owner.

Poem - by Stephen Byrne We’re greyhounds we’re greyhounds we used to run & race. We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’re elegant with grace We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’ve got a turn of pace But now we are retired & we’re looking for a rest Just take your time we’re in our prime there’s lots of us to choose And we’ll give you lots of cuddles for a tickle on the chest We’re greyhounds we’re greyhounds we used to run & race. We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’re elegant with grace We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’ve got a turn of pace We like a comfy sofa & with a little bit of space We bare our teeth it’s just a smile to say hello to you We often zoom across the grass to chase the hidden foe We aren’t a lot of trouble but we have a smelly bum We’re greyhounds we’re greyhounds we used to run & race. We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’re elegant with grace We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’ve got a turn of pace But then one day we won’t be there we’re off to Rainbow Bridge But don’t be glum you gave us fun & lots of happiness So adopt some more it’s not a chore we’re waiting at the door We’re greyhounds we’re greyhounds we used to run & race. We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’re elegant with grace We’re Greyhounds we’re Greyhounds we’ve got a turn of pace But then one day you’ll sniff the air & go Oh what the hell

Pupdate! Back in the summer these gorgeous pups came into our care (along with mum Queenie). Just look how they’ve settled into their homes, and how they’ve grown... Sorry, we don’t have an update from the final puppy.
